Australians are living longer than ever before, a result of improved living standards, which is great, however there is a catch. This aging of the population has placed a strain on the Social Security system and the ability for the Government to provide the aged pension. In recent times the Federal Government has reacted by changing the age at which superannuation becomes accessible and the rules regarding the aged pension. This in turn is leading to longer working lives, aided by flexible working arrangements by many employers, but also a lot of us are choosing to work later in life. As a result of all of this, some of us are continuing to buy property later in life, buying investment properties which may eventually become the family home in retirement. This can be a great strategy that allows the purchase of a future home at today’s prices, while retaining the existing home. For example, Michael and Jane are in their late 50’s, own their five bedroom home and have no children living with them. They expect their five bedroom home will eventually be too big for them, but are not yet ready to
move. They also wish to buy an investment property now to help boost their retirement assets as they believe they will be unlikely to receive a pension in retirement. They decide to buy a unit as an investment property in an area where they would like to retire. While they have to borrow the funds to buy the investment
