There has been a lot of changes to the interest rates banks and other lenders charge when taking a home loan in recent months. There have been increases to interest rates charged for investment property loans as well as for interest only loans. Some of the changes are due to new regulations for banks, while some have been made by lenders to recover their costs. With so many changes it can be difficult to know what will happen to the interest rates charged to a loan, and the effect this will have on loan repayments. This often leads to questions about fixing the interest rate. A fixed interest rate allows a borrower to know exactly what their rate will be for a set period of time. For example, most lenders offer the ability to fix an interest rate for anywhere from one to five years. During this time the interest rate and the repayments can be known with certainty, whereas with a variable rate loan, it is possible for the interest rate and the repayments to change. It can sometimes be worthwhile to ‘split’ a loan, with a portion fixed, and the remainder variable. Australia’s garden expert Victa has some tips to make the most of the warmer weather and breathe new life into a tired yard. Before you can tackle any garden issues you’ll want to begin by clearing the lawn to remove any fallen branches and leaves. To make the process quicker and easier try investing in a leaf blower or vacuum. “Make sure the lawn is clean from anything that’s too large for the leaf blower or vacuum to handle, such as larger branches
and sticks,” said Joel Hawkins, Victa Category Manager, Lawn and Garden Products. Next it’s time to move on to those dreaded weeds. The best way to manage these menaces is to get rid of them while they’re young and their roots are weak. If weeds have already taken hold they will have to be dug up, leaving grass-free patches on the lawn. Aeration is another important step towards luscious lawn. It helps to promote new root growth by allowing air, water and nutrients to circulate freely. “Aerating can be done using a

garden fork.
