POLICE SWOOP In a major coup for police, two brothers were arrested on Tuesday and charged with a man’s murder after his remains were discovered earlier this year in bushland in Londonderry. A 34-year-old man was arrested after arriving at Sydney International Airport on a fl ight from Lebanon. Police also arrested a 36-yearold man at Cecil Hills a short time later. Both men were charged.

Is Glossop Street a tragedy waiting to happen? 58 of those resulting in injuries. “Out of the 135 reported crashes, 116 crashes occurred at, or within 10 metres of the intersections along Glossop Street,” said a Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson. State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, said that the high proportion of accidents occurring within just metres of the intersections along Glossop Street indicates that there is a serious problem that needs further investigation. “I have had residents complain about traffic along Glossop Street, particularly cars and trucks who speed above the 60km/hr speed limit here,” she said. “There have also been problems with parking

An investigation into the possibility of median closures at the intersections has been made a priority by Council.

Local club opens western Sydney’s biggest buffet as upgrades near completion Penrith RSL has declared it’s ready to match it with some of Sydney’s biggest clubs by opening a major new restaurant and finalising construction on its new multi-level car park... KATHERINE TWEED

enrith RSL has made history with the opening of their new buffet as the local club continues to emerge as a revitalised market leader. Penrith RSL has celebrated the completion of the new Star Buffet, a complete buffet restaurant, seating 700 people and offering a bigger selection of food than has ever been seen before. “Th is is a big thing for Penrith, to have a facility like this. There are no buffets of this kind in Penrith, we lack a good quality food outlet and I think we have done it here. It is a one-stop-shop for everything,” said Penrith RSL Chief Executive Officer, Neel Chand. The restaurant boasts many different styles of food from around the globe including teppanyaki, carvery, oriental food and even a Sushi Train, as well as seafood, salad and dessert. The size of the restaurant is not only a fi rst for Penrith but according to Mr Chand, it is a fi rst for western Sydney. “It is very, very affordable and there is so much variety in foods. Th is is, by far, the biggest buffet in western Sydney,” he said. “Just the sheer volume of people that we can seat here – we can take large groups of hundreds and it is still minimum cost.” The new car park at Penrith RSL has been under construction since April however, according to Mr Chand, it is nearing its completion and could be ready for use in less than two weeks. “With the car park almost ready and the Star Buffet already in use, this is a big time for us. We can expect to see more people, it is going to be great,” he said.

First port of call for me would be hiring an assistant to do any heavy lifting – anyone who saw my efforts in the car park of Bunnings on Tuesday night would agree I need all the help I can get. But not all problems need $70 million to be fi xed. In fact, the world would be a better place if just a few things were changed... The world would be a better place without Bernard Tomic being a baby The story: Bernard Tomic is under police investigation for an alleged brawl involving a male friend after partying on the Gold Coast. He reminded police of “who he was” and accused them of running a hate campaign against him, according to a story on News Limited websites. My view: It was once thought that Tomic would be the next big star of Australian tennis, but now he’s the potential leading star of our next reality show, ‘Australia’s Biggest Brat’. A shame, really, but if Tomic doesn’t pick up his act both on and off the court some time soon, he’ll quickly become a train wreck. At 20, he still has time to emerge with a ‘great Aussie comeback’ story, but time is running out.

The world would be a better place if the NRL found a CEO The story: The NRL has launched a new brand and a new logo as it aims to bring every level of the game closer together, all part of its strategic plan for the next five years. My view: Perhaps, just perhaps, a new CEO would have whispered in the ear of the Independent Commission and let them know that nobody gives a flying banana about a new logo. The strategic plan sounds wonderful in theory but there’s very little substance in terms of exactly how the lofty goals will be reached. The idea of bringing the code closer together makes sense, but one still feels that rugby league is behind the eight ball when it comes to figuring out how to grow, and attract the numbers it needs to ensure its future.

The world would be a be a better place with a Victoria Bridge upgrade The story: A new residents action group has emerged in relation to the Victoria Bridge upgrade, concerned that the new crossing will impact the rowing course, and will have a range of other problems. They’re also concerned about public consultation and design aspects. My view: Residents have a right to voice their opinion and I have no doubt that Penrith MP Stuart Ayres would support me on that. However, there has been widespread calls for a new crossing for years, and it quite simply needs to happen. We have had a State Government commit $20 million to the project, and fi nally we’ve seen real work commence in terms of the planning. There has been enormous public consultation and updates throughout this process, to the point where it has been hard to pick up a newspaper in Penrith over the last few years and not see the words ‘Victoria Bridge’. I for one would hate to see all of this recent drama result in no new crossing, especially considering the current bridge is a tragedy in waiting.

The world would be a better place if we weren’t obsessed with our phones The story: Drivers will be hit with big fi nes and loss of demerit points from this week, with new road rules banning motorists from touching their phones. Drivers will need to have their phones stored in “cradles”, ensuring a “hands off ” policy. My view: It’s amazing just how many people you see with their phone up to their ear every single day. Now I’m far from perfect, and I even admit that two years ago one of the friendly fellows at Penrith Police happily accepted a donation of a few hundred dollars and a couple of demerit points after catching me talking on the phone. But in recent times I’ve been on a one-man mission to stop the lunacy of using phones while driving. Drive for a few hours straight and you’ll see how many near misses or stupid acts are caused because of people on their phones. Driving into the city on Tuesday, I watched a young P plater miss that the light turned green because she was texting. By the time she raised her head, despite the beeps of horns behind her, the light was red again and she was completely oblivious. The law changes are getting plenty of media attention this week, and so they should. Double the demerit points and fi nes, I say.

olice have had a major breakthrough in the case of murdered man, Mohammed Ayman Abouhait, who was reported missing more than two years ago. In a major development, two brothers were arrested on Tuesday and charged with the man’s murder after his remains were discovered earlier this year in bushland in Londonderry. Mr Abouhait, 30, was reported missing

in July 2010 after attempts by his family and his girlfriend to contact him were unsuccessful – he was last seen on Boronia Road in North St Marys. A high-profi le search ensued, with the NSW Government offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts. Following information received from the public, investigators conducted a search near the Great Western Highway at Minchinbury and seized a number of items including mobile phone parts, which have undergone forensic examination.

Further information also resulted in police divers searching the Nepean River at Penrith, where they located fi rearms and fi rearm parts believed to have been related to Mr Abouhait’s disappearance. About 7.40pm on Tuesday, a 34-yearold man was arrested after arriving at Sydney International Airport on a fl ight from Lebanon. He was taken to Botany Bay Police Station. Police also arrested a 36-year-old man at Cecil Hills a short time later. He was taken to Fairfield Police Station. Both men have been charged with the murder of Mr Abouhait.

Cash doesn’t grow on trees In response to Tanya Plibersek criticising Barry O’Farrell’s “savage” health cuts (Dear Weekender, Western Weekender October 26), does this woman think that money grows on the gum trees in everbody’s front yard? For God’s sake if you can’t afford to buy or fund something then you don’t just borrow more money and do it anyway just to satisfy your warped university taught ideology. I am led to believe that no one in the Labor caucus has ever had a hands on job. That does explain a severe lack of common sense amongst the Labor Party cabinet. When that thread which may be Craig Thompson fi nally breaks and Federal Labor comes crashing to earth, I cringe to think what will the debt be? Tony Abbott will probably be the most hated man in Australia initially because of the extreme measures needed to correct Labor’s mess as it is very hard to take away hand-outs given for nothing but votes. Clarifying school upgrade I write in response to Peta Holmes’ letter (Dear Weekender, Western Weekender October 19). I would like to correct the record with the facts regarding the upgrade of Kurrambee School in Werrington. As mentioned in the article in the October edition of my newsletter, this was a joint announcement of the State and Commonwealth Governments. The upgrade came about because the NSW Government was able to renegotiate with the Commonwealth Government on how the residual BER funds would be spent. Rather than have more money wasted on second libraries or overpriced school halls, the NSW Government requested that the money be reallocated for our neediest students. alloween – some say it’s too American or too commercial but I say so what! If the kids are having fun and they have parental supervision what’s the harm? Why can’t they knock on the neighbour’s door and get a lolly? Of course you can’t let them roam the streets in the middle of the night or do nasty tricks. I’m talking about young kids making costumes and pumpkin-shaped lolly baskets and going next door with mum or dad in tow. I remember as a kid my two sisters, brothers and I would go down the street collecting what we thought was a massive haul of lollies and thinking it was absolutely fabulous. Mum also enjoyed it – chatting to the neighbours and other parents we bumped into as we progressed down the street. I have to admit I do also remember a few distasteful tricks taking place – in our area it was eggs. Th rowing eggs at people and houses – not necessarily because they didn’t get a treat – but I guess because they thought they were funny. Which they weren’t. One year a young girl did get an egg thrown at her and part of the shell got stuck in her eye. Not only stupid but dangerous. But I will also point out it was around midnight and there wasn’t a

parent in sight. Obviously I don’t condone the “trick” side of Halloween but if it’s done safely and respectively I don’t see the problem with it. Over the years it’s become even simpler to indicate if you want to participate or not. Th is week in my letter box I received a blue balloon and a note saying “if you don’t mind little monsters coming to your door between 5pm and 7pm please place this balloon on your letterbox”. So if you don’t want to take part don’t do it! And if you choose not to participate don’t spend the next week complaining or criticising people who do. But on the other hand you could try embracing it – heaven forbid you might just have some fun! I can tell you it’s not just the kids who get into it – there are plenty of adults also having Halloween parties this weekend. And why not. If nothing else it’s a good excuse to catch up with friends, put on a silly costume and forget about all the bad things in the world!

or too long western Sydney families have gone without adequate access to housing and community services – an issue that Mission Australia has been lobbying on for years. Now, the Christian charity which provides employment, accommodation and a range of other family-centred services has decided to put their ‘money where their mouth is’, opening a $13.7 million multipurpose facility in Kingswood last Friday. “Traditionally Mission Australia has provided housing services in the inner city, however, we have found that actually many of those people are travelling from western Sydney,” explained Mission Australia CEO, Toby Hall. “So when we were looking for a site to establish new housing services, it didn’t take us long to identify Kingswood.” The facility consists of 22 two and three bedroom units located onsite and near the building, a hub for family services such as young parent programs, parent education, specialised playgroups and a day care service. “In addition to providing accommodation, the Mission Australia Centre Kingswood offers an outreach service to help families in the area who are at risk of homelessness, overcome their issues,” Mr Hall said. Community service: A man has been sentenced to 150 hours of community service after being convicted of driving with a mid-range PCA. On June 17 at 5am, the 34year-old man was driving along Parker Street, Penrith, when he turned into Copeland Street where police officers stopped him for a random breath test. He returned a positive reading and was taken to Penrith Police Station for a breath analysis where he returned a reading of 0.115. The man told police that he had consumed alcohol half an hour prior to driving. He had previously been charged on two other occasions of driving with a mid-range PCA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jail for man: A 27-year-old male was sentenced to a term of seven months in jail with a non-parole period of one month after he dishonestly obtained property by deception on 22 occasions. Between February 13 and February 16, the 27-year-old attended several service stations including in St Clair and surrounds where he proceeded to purchase goods with a debit card. On the majority of those 22 occasions, there were not sufficient funds for the purchases. The purchases were often in excess of what was allowed but were approved by console operators (despite that being against their company policy). In the period of four days, the man’s total purchases amounted to $3,591.21. Police from the Metropolitan Robbery Command interviewed him on May 9 in relation to the incidents.

Woman not allowed to drive: A 52-year-old woman has had her driving licence disqualified for eight months after driving under the influence of alcohol. Between 9.20am and 9.30am on August 2, the woman was driving along Forrester Road, North St Marys when she was pulled over by police for a breath test. She told police that she had consumed an alcoholic beverage five minutes prior to being pulled over. Police afforded her 10 minutes before conducting the breath test, which returned a positive result. The woman was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station for a breath analysis, where she recorded a reading of 0.099. Pursuit ends when car crashes into back of a truck on The Northern Road CASSANDRA O CONNOR

n armed robbery of a St Marys car wash came to a shocking end when the two alleged robbers crashed their stolen car in a high-speed police chase last week. Just before 4.30pm last Wednesday, October 24, two men entered the car wash on Gallipoli Street, St Marys, armed with a knife and threatened the lone, 26-year-old employee who was working in the back office at the time. The men demanded the victim give them his car keys – one of the offenders ran outside to the vehicle whilst the other proceeded to take the victim’s mobile phone and some cash from the premises. Both men then fled in the stolen car, a bright yellow Ford Falcon XR8 and police were alerted. St Marys Police attended the scene of the robbery and launched an investigation. The following day (Thursday, October 25), at around 1pm, police received reports that the stolen vehicle had been sighted. St Marys detectives responded and spotted the car on Dunheved Road, Werrington.

A pursuit was initiated and continued through a number of suburbs before the car collided with a truck on The Northern Road at Cambridge Park.

Fortunately, the truck driver was not injured and the driver and passenger of the stolen vehicle remarkably escaped from the mangled car.

Both men were taken to hospital with injuries, none of them life threatening despite the nature of the crash, and were later charged.

olice are continuing inquiries into the armed robbery of Colyton Post Office last Friday afternoon. Just after 3.30pm a white Holden Commodore sedan was seen to arrive at the Post Office, located on Day Street, with three men inside. Two men got out of the car and proceeded inside – one carrying a shotgun. “We believe the men made threats to the staff and removed an amount of cash from the till and another location within the shop,” said St Marys Police Crime Manager, Detective Acting Inspector, Brad

Element. The men were wearing masks and darkcoloured, hooded jumpers and track pants so could not be easily identified. They left the Post Office in the white sedan; but the car was located just two blocks away in Leonard Street well alight and further investigation has shown that the car was stolen. St Marys Police with the help of the police helicopter, Polair, and the Dog Squad searched the area extensively just after the robbery occurred, but unfortunately the three men were not located. Police are continuing their inquires and it is believed the men were last seen heading towards Desborough Road.

It is believed that this car was used in an armed robbery at Colyton last Friday.

he number of teenagers lighting up cigarettes has dropped significantly in the last decade but there are still some teens out there failing to adhere to anti-smoking campaigns. A 16-year-old Orchard Hills boy, who wishes to remain anonymous, is just one local teenager who has recently taken up the habit, despite the ever mounting health warnings. “I’ve been smoking for a little under a year now and I fi nd it quite relaxing,” the teen said. “Smoking is my way to get away from everything and gives me time to think. It’s also a good way to bond with someone I believe.” The boy admitted he was initially influenced by his friends to light up, but said he and his mates were a rare few as smoking at his local high school is far from popular. “Only two kids out of my whole year (Year 11) currently smoke,” he said. “I got into smoking after hanging out with a group of guys who were all smoking, so I thought to myself why not? I wasn’t pressured into it by them, I was just always interested in what smoking would be like, so I thought why not try it with my mates?” Since 1984, when the fi rst NSW secondary school survey on smoking was conducted, smoking rates among 12 to 17year-old secondary school students have

A 2008 survey of NSW secondary students found that current (smoked in the last week) smoking rates were 6.9 per cent among boys aged 12 to 17 and 7.7 per cent among girls in the same age group – a huge drop from when smoking was considered ‘cool’ in the 80’s and 90’s. The teen said he was aware of the health dangers smoking caused but wouldn’t give up because of them. “I don’t really think about the health dangers and I don’t believe I’m at risk,” he said. “I’m a fit young guy and I haven’t seen any immediate changes to my health. When I’m smoking I don’t really care what I’m breathing in.”

Community Network Coordinator of Cancer Council’s Penrith Hub, Rodney Titovs, said the Cancer Council were strong advocates in plain packaging and ‘out of sight’ cigarette merchandising to deter youngsters from smoking. “Young people are quite effected by sight, the less that is seen the less it becomes part of their behaviour,” he said. “Other young people should discipline other kids about smoking by telling them it’s wrong, telling them it’s not cool, telling them it’s bad for their health.” For the 16-year-old anonymous schoolboy, he said he’s fi nding it difficult to get a hold of cigarettes and may be forced to quit the deadly habit because of it.

POLICE SNAPSHOT Kidnapping and assault: St Marys man charged A 21-year-old St Marys man has been charged with kidnapping and assault. Abut 3.30pm on Monday, officers were called to a house on Coleman Street, Merrylands. When they arrived police officers were told that a 27-year-old man had been taken against his will from another address in Merrylands. The man had allegedly been assaulted during the incident, however did not require hospitalisation. At the premises, officers arrested four men – the St Marys man, one man from Merrylands and two men from Pemulwuy. All were taken to Merrylands Police Station where they were charged with numerous offences, including take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasioning actual bodily harm. Police take bike: Kingswood rider busted Last Friday night, officers attached to Cootamundra Traffic and Highway Patrol were conducting speed enforcement duties along the Hume Highway, Tumbalong. About 10pm, police detected a Kawasaki motorcycle travelling at 193km/h in a 110km/h zone on the highway. The bike was stopped by police and the driver – a 42-year-old man from Kingswood – had his licence suspended. Payout pulled No compensation for brain damaged student

Scary night in St Marys: Assaults investigated Police are investigating an alleged assault upon two young men in the St Marys area late on Saturday night. It is alleged that about 11.30pm a 19-year-old man was in West Lane when he became involved in an argument with another male. The male is said to have dragged the victim from his vehicle and he and several associates have allegedly punched and kicked the victim whilst he was on the ground. The victim managed to get to his feet and run, being chased by the other males. A friend of the victim attempted to come to his aid and a further altercation occurred. It is alleged the group of males then returned to the car park where a significant amount of damage was caused to the victim’s vehicle. Security guards have intervened to prevent any further incidents. Any witnesses are asked to contact St Marys Police Station.

Glenmore Park High School student who suffered brain damage after a classmate assaulted him will no longer receive a compensation payout of $318,288 from the Department of Education and Training (DET). In October 2005, the student, who was in Year 8 at the time, was assaulted by his classmate during lunch time, after a “tussle” in the

lesson prior. He was hit in the head and chest, and sustained a serious injury, resulting in brain damage. The student who committed the assault had been involved in a separate, violent incident six weeks prior in August. At that time, the school principal suspended the student for the violent outburst but in her view, it was a “one-off ” incident, which “he was quite remorseful about”. A District Court Judge found that the school had breached its

duty of care by failing to inform the Year 8 teachers of the previous incident and to prevent further incidents from occurring. But the State of NSW on behalf of the school and DET had that decision successfully overturned in the Court of Appeal last week. The three judge panel presiding over the case found that there was a foreseeable risk of harm if the student was provoked but that action taken by the teacher in the lesson prior would not necessarily have prevented the incident.

I’ll build this bridge: Ayres adamant plans for new crossing will forge ahead CASSANDRA O CONNOR

he Nepean River Green Bridge has divided the community in recent weeks but for South Penrith cyclist, Rohan Curtis, it cannot be built fast enough. “I work in Emu Plains and ride my bike recreationally along Victoria Bridge two to three times a week. A cantilever bridge would be good but I don’t really see the benefits, a separate bridge away from the traffic would be great,” he said. “The sooner the better.” It is for residents like Mr Curtis that MP for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, is adamant that the Nepean River Green Bridge will go ahead, despite a recent emergence of opposition to the proposal. Though a fi nal location for the $20 million bridge has not yet been determined, the State Government has announced the Old Ferry Road Punt Road alignment as the preferred location. In particular, the Nepean River Users Group, a local action group, is against the preferred location. “We have received 350 submissions on the design concepts of the bridge to the Roads and Maritime Services that are currently being evaluated for the Steering Committee,” Mr Ayres explained on Monday during a news conference. “Ultimately the design of the bridge and the location must be decided in conjunction.” That decision will rest with the Steering Committee, which consists of

representatives from Penrith City Council, Transport for NSW and RMS and is likely to again be put to the public for comment. The Steering Committee is scheduled to meet on November 12 to discuss the design options and public feedback, but Mr Ayres said that a cantilever bridge has been ruled out due to economic and heritage costs that such a bridge would

entail. Despite calls from the Nepean River Users Group, the Steering Committee meeting will not be open to the public. “I don’t see the need for that,” Mr Ayres said. “The Steering Committee is made up of representatives from Council, RMS and Transport for NSW and I think we

have a good group of people who are very professional.” Mr Ayres will consult with the Steering Committee to see if the members feel it is appropriate to have a representative from the Nepean River Users Group join the Committee. COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Residents affected by the severe flood event earlier this year in the Londonderry area demanded answers as to its cause and an independent report to Council provides them. Penrith City Mayor Mark Davies said the flooding was the result of a rare extreme weather event, where some 7cm of rain fell in half an hour, and that no amount of work would have avoided the flooding on that evening. “Council provided as much support as it could including investigating what State and Federal Government fi nancial assistance was available, providing Council crews to support emergency crews, special waste collections for debris, compassion payment options for rates and mayoral letters of support for insurance claims,” Cr Davies said. “The review found that the extreme and unpredictable nature of the rain was the major contributor to the flooding of properties. Given the nature of the catchment and the weather conditions on that day, flooding of properties was unfortunate but inevitable. “The role of all agencies as well as other factors relating to the flooding were also under the microscope in the report. As too were potential mitigation works to reduce the frequency and impact of flooding into the future. “The report said that unauthorised fi lling in the area possibly also contributed to the impact of the deluge. Council released the report at a recent Council meeting and is now encouraging community feedback on the report. Council will act on the report’s fi ndings and community feedback in the coming months.”

34-year-old woman has been arrested after she was caught out trying to pay for goods from a licenced premises with a counterfeit $50 note. “We were alerted by staff members and were fortunate to be able to attend whilst the female patron was still at the premises,” explained St Marys Police Crime Manager, Detective Acting Inspector, Brad Element. “The woman was spoken to before being searched and a further four notes were discovered in her handbag by officers.” The North St Marys resident was arrested and charged and will face

Penrith Local Court on November 20. Meanwhile, investigations are continuing into two other incidents that occurred over the weekend, where storeowners identified counterfeit $50 notes. “We are currently investigating whether the three incidents are linked and if there are more persons involved,” Mr Element said. In the meantime, police are warning small business owners in particular to check all currency and be mindful that these incidents have taken place in the local area. Relationships Australia provide a safe space where parents who for various reasons such as court orders, drug addiction or alcohol abuse, must visit their children in a supervised setting. The staff of six also provide a place for parents who are separated to change between custody arrangements of the children in a setting where potential confl ict is minimised. “One of the difficulties we face is the waiting lists being so long – particularly because family law cases can be quite drawn out. Unfortunately that waiting list is getting longer and longer,” explained Children’s Contact Service Coordinator, Helen McQuinn. The waiting list is currently six months because of both high demand from the community and also because of the lengthy period that it takes for family court cases to decide child custody arrangements. The Federal Government has announced that Relationships Australia NSW will receive a $70,000 one-off grant to help the centre expand its services. $17,000 of that is for Penrith services. “The additional funding will be used to increase access to services for families and to reduce waiting lists, across

Call for CBD parking overhaul Locals say frustration is building over lack of accessible spaces in main streets

isability access parking is an essential part of any community however some local residents feel that there is a lack of accessible street parking on main road shopping strips in Penrith and St Marys. Accessible parking has long been an issue for Bill and Margaret Perry from Erskine Park, who have been known to bring disability access problems to the attention of local politicians. Th is year Mr and Mrs Perry are campaigning for accessible parking spaces to be provided on main road shopping strips in the local area, such as Queen Street in St Marys and High Street in Penrith. “Its really hard for Margaret to get around. The lack of parking close to important services and the difficulty for Margaret of getting in and out of the car does impact on our quality of life,” Mr Perry said. “The car parks on East Lane and behind Queen Street are too far away for people that require accessible parking and it is difficult to get in and out of them.” Mr and Mrs Perry met Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, in 2008, when she worked with council to address disability access problems in Erskine Park Village Shopping Centre and they met with her again this week to start the new campaign. “Bill and Margaret came to see me because of the difficulty that they experience trying to fi nd parking close to doctors, chemists and other essential services in St Marys and Penrith,” Mrs Davies said.

Concerned over parking availability: State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, with Margaret and Bill Perry from Erskine Park.

“Margaret is a holder of a disability parking permit because she can’t walk long distances; unfortunately a permit is useless when there are no easily accessible designated disabled parking spaces.” Penrith City Council monitor the usage levels of accessible car parking and provides accessible spaces within all public car parks, including additional

spaces within the new car park on the northern side of Penrith Station. “Council has allocated accessible car parking within its public car parks. We monitor the usage of these spaces and balance the need for parking for all users. Council’s development team ensure all new developments cater for users of accessible spaces as required,” said a

spokesperson from Penrith City Council. “The provision of on-street accessible spaces would usually also require the narrowing of the footway which will have an impact upon shoppers and walkers.” Mrs Davies has referred the matter to Penrith Disability Access Forum and encourages anyone who is concerned with the issue to contact her office.

ocal students were catapulted into a medieval world at McCarthy Catholic College this week to witness the fi ring of an ancient weapon, the Trebuchet. McCarthy’s Experimental Archaeology Club have been busy constructing a replica of a medieval Trebuchet, a siege weapon used to hurl boulders at castle walls and terrorise its inhabitants. The 25 students who were involved in the club spent an afternoon after

school each week creating the weapon, including the paper-mache ‘heads’ to fi re, whilst learning about medieval history and fi nally had the opportunity to test the weapon on Tuesday. “They learn by re-creating and as you can imagine it is a lot more interesting than reading about it in a text book,” said Owen Laffi n, Assistant Head of HSIE and co-ordinator of the Experimental Archaeology Club. The co-ordinators have big plans for the club next year, there are even talks of a Trojan horse replica big enough to fit some students inside.

Bonny Scents Massage Therapy’s main objective is to make sure people living with cancer or life threatening illnesses are looked after in a respectful manner, away from hospitals, where they can come to feel good and have fun. Owner of Bonny Scents, Frances Nicholson, said it was her dream to open a larger dedicated facility for her clients. “There’s been a big increase recently in oncology clients needing services where they can get the proper treatment in a safe and relaxed way by a therapist who is trained in the field of oncology therapies,” she said. “I’d been running my massage therapy business out of my own house for years and was starting to become increasingly busier with oncology clients as well as my general clients. “I said to my husband ‘I have a dream, I want to get a house’. Two weeks later I found a house and it went from there.” The house, known as ‘Willow Tree Cottage’, has been fully renovated and transformed into a dedicated therapy centre comprising of two massage rooms, a counselling/quiet room and a

large disabled bathroom. “I called it Willow Tree Cottage because willow trees have nice big leaves that flow in the wind, but underneath their roots they are really tough – that’s what my clients are like,” Mrs Nicholson said. “My clients are all happy on the outside but underneath there’s strength inside of them.” Therapies provided at Bonny Scents include remedial, sports, oncology, lymphatic, pregnancy, Swedish, sports injury and trigger point therapy. “There is currently nowhere in Penrith where an oncology client can have multiple therapies done in the one place,” Mrs Nicholson said. 65 per cent of Bonny Scents clientele are oncology patients. Massages for oncology clients are subsidised by Blue Mountains Cancer Help, meaning patients who join Blue Mountains Cancer Help only have to pay a fraction of the price for their massage. Oncology client, Kerrie Dowding, said Bonny Scents has been a “valuable resource” throughout her recovery. “I had my fi rst brush with cancer 20 years ago and back then there was no place like this,” she said. “Th is place gives me a connection, it gives my body relaxation.” Th is Saturday, November 3, Bonny Scents will be holding an open day at 3 Stapley Street, Kingswood.

Students will be Spectacular Penrith locals prepare to join thousands in annual entertainment event KATHERINE TWEED

he Schools Spectacular is one of the biggest displays of young talent in NSW and this year Penrith will be represented in a big way with a handful of our own talented students set to light up the stage. 2012 marks the 29th year of the Schools Spectacular, which will see 3,600 students from 400 schools showcase their musical and dance talent. The performing arts showcase will take place at the Sydney Entertainment Centre with four shows only across Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24. Imogen Clark, a Year 12 Penrith High School Student, will be performing a solo in front of thousands of people for her fi rst year at Schools Spectacular. “I am a bit nervous but it is such a privilege to be part of this. A lot of the time music gets forgotten, especially for high school kids, so this gives students a chance to show their talent,” she said. The singer songwriter will be performing a solo piece, called ‘Different Worlds’, accompanied by only one back up singer and a handful of dancers. “I am very proud to be a part of a group of amazing, talented people. The best part has been the rehearsals, where we can spend time together – it is the only place where you can burst into song and no-one thinks anything of it,” she said. “It looks like it is going to be a fantastic show this year. There is a lot of variety and there are so many styles.”

here were over 1,700 DisabiliTEA morning teas held across Australia last Friday, which saw people from across the nation and Penrith rally to support a fair national system for people with disability. Organisations across Penrith held their own DisabiliTEA functions in support of the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), with the hopes of sending the

message to political leaders that the NDIS is the only fair way to ensure that people with disability lead a life where they have choices. “The NDIS will change the way that people receive funding for disability. It is about giving people a choice. It is more about a person’s right as an individual,” said Janine Merriman from Nepean Area Disabilities Organisation (NADO). Like NADO, other organisations in Penrith including Northcott, Endeavour and Konfident Kids, held morning teas that were visited by a number of special guests and politicians.

We will also be drawing lots of lucky door prizes on the day as well.” One of the exhibitors at the fair, owner of The Chocolate Pot, Richard Parker, said he was delighted to be bringing his delectable handmade chocolates to the event for a second year running. “Th is is a fantastic platform to become involved in the community and showcase our products alongside some of the best at the Treeview Estates,” he said. “We take great pride in hand making chocolate truffles and logs, so we are delighted to share our enjoyment with Lithgow and the wider community.” The Treeview Food & Wine Fair is set to be a fun day out for the whole family, and the perfect opportunity to stock up on some gourmet delights before the festive season begins. conditions of the poor and needy. Wilberforce gave away one-quarter of his annual income to the poor. He fought on behalf of chimney sweeps, single mothers and orphans and he founded numerous organisations, all with the goal of the betterment of society. Quite a remarkable man, a man transformed and renewed by the amazing grace of God shown to us in Jesus.

n recent times politicians from all sides have come in for a bit of a hammering. As we look back in history, we see that this has not always been the case as some politicians have stood out as men and women who have made a significant, positive impact on our world. One such politician was William Wilberforce. Wilberforce was elected to the British Parliament in 1780. After a self confessed slow start to his political life, during the Easter of 1786, Wilberforce experienced the transforming grace of God. His heart was “swelling with the song of praise and thanksgiving to God”. He was simply amazed by the grace of God as he came to understand the kindness and forgiveness God had shown him in Jesus. God grace transformed Wilberforce’s life, turning around his political motivation with two great causes holding his attention. The fi rst was the abolition of slavery. Wilberforce wrote of slavery as something: “so enormous, so dreadful... that I would never rest until I had effected its abolition”. Sadly, because of vested interests, entrenched bigotry and his own poor health, it would take many years to bring slavery to an end, as one historian wrote, “one of the turning events in the history of the world”. The second cause Wilberforce fought to turn around was the reform of the

Captain’s Report Fresh from playing a starring role in the Sydney Sixers T20 Champions League victory, Australian test star Pat Cummins has arrived home looking forward to the domestic summer ahead. Whilst Cricket Australia is aiming to regulate the workload of its most promising fast bowler we are hopeful that Pat may squeeze a game or two in for the club at some stage during the season. In my opinion Sydney Grade Cricket would benefit enormously from more regular appearances from Test and State stars. There was much publicity when Australian captain Michael Clarke played for Western Suburbs earlier this month, and both his team and the opposition would

In other representative player news, NSW Blues fast bowler Josh Lalor is close to returning from a hamstring injury that forced him to withdraw from his playing role with the Australian Indigenous tour of India earlier in the year. Josh attended the fi rst week of the tour in an ambassadorial role, enjoying the chance to present Prime Minister Julia Gillard with a shirt. Josh has completed a strong running session to test out his injured hamstring and he is a reasonable chance of being available for week two of our match against Sydney, subject to further fitness tests next week which we are hopeful he will pass.

Penrith struggled for runs all day, Pat Jackson and Adam Beach both scored 36. Penrith were dismissed in the 74th over for 205. 2nd Grade: Penrith were dismissed for 147 on day one. UNSW were 3 for 170 at the end of the fi rst day. On day two UNSW fi nally declared at 7 for 318. Ben Betros with 2 for 51 and Gail Venables with 2 for 57 both bowled well. Penrith in their second innings were 6 for 204 at stumps. Matthew Kimble (52), Ben Betros (34) and Pat Pope (33) batted well to save being beaten outright. 3rd Grade: On day one Penrith were dismissed for 200, and at stumps UNSW were 2 for 40. Resuming batting on the second day, wickets fell on a regular basis

to dismiss UNSW for 114. The three pace bowlers were outstanding, Michael Collins 4 for 36 and Grant Maguire 3 for 31 were wellsupported by captain Paul Goldsmith who bowled very well without luck. 4th Grade: UNSW on the fi rst day scored 361, Penrith replied with 234. Jason Collins, in an outstanding innings, scored 86. He was well-supported by Adam Bayliss with 35. 5th Grade: On the fi rst day Penrith declared at 8 for 370. UNSW at stumps were 0 for 14. At no stage did UNSW try to win the match. On a very fast outfield and a super batting wicket they were 6 for 244. The match fi nished in a draw. 1st Grade 20/20: Penrith played Gordon on Sunday at Chatswood Oval. Batting fi rst Penrith were 3 for 175. Pat Jackson (53) and Adam Beach (66) not out were outstanding. In reply Gordon scored 4 for 176, scoring the winning runs with four balls to spare.

Bowls It was interesting to note in the latest Bowls NSW Journal publication of men’s membership figures for the State, that Penrith with 305 members ranked the sixth largest membership. Of the five Clubs with higher membership only two had an increase in numbers over the past 12 months. Membership for the (15) Clubs in the Nepean District fell from 1,848 to 1,748 a reduction of 5.41 per cent compared to the State average reduction of 2.06 per cent overall. Of the 15 Clubs, only four had membership growth, Penrith (2.01 per cent), Blacktown Workers (3.95 per cent), Kingswood (5.83 per cent) and Pitt Town (7.89 per cent). Four Clubs had decreasing membership in excess of 10 per cent which must be a worrying trend.

300 players from all over NSW made the trip to the Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre last weekend for the Medibank Junior Development Series. The invitational event featured juniors aged 10 to 16 and involved a number of local players who did the Penrith area proud. Chris Woodland from Nepean District Tennis Association said: “The crowd was buzzing, it was a fantastic few days of tennis”. In some great news, Penrith junior, Bethany Cullen, took out the U16 Girls State Final. Following this year’s success, Mr Woodland hopes to host the event again next year.

Women’s rugby league is on the rise in Penrith of late following the recent completion of the Sydney West Schoolgirls’ Rugby League competition, which, in the end, was won by the girls at Jamison High. Penrith also fields a team in the competitive Sydney Metropolitan Ladies competition called the Penrith Waratahs Ladies team. The ARL is looking to expand the school competition in 2013 and are on the hunt for more local high schools to enter women’s teams for the new season. wo-time Australian Olympian, Courtney Atkinson, was the toast of Penrith last weekend after he won the famous Nepean Triathlon. What makes the 33-year-old’s victory even more impressive was it was the fi rst time the professional triathlete had ever competed at the local annual event. “For years it has been a triathlon I had always heard about and it was always one I wanted to get to,” Atkinson said. The London Olympian, who hails from Mermaid Waters in Queensland, completed the 1km swim, 30km cycle and 10km run in a time of 1:27:44, 54 seconds ahead of 2011 Nepean champion, Tim Reed. “Th is was my fi rst triathlon since the London Olympics,” Atkinson said. “The Regatta Centre is a great location to race because it’s a course where the whole crowd can watch you compete throughout.” The Nepean Triathlon’s female winner was Dutch Olympian, Rachel Klamer, who completed the course in 1:38:40.

The male versus female handicap portion of the race was the most thrilling of all with Atkinson taking the handicap title from Klamer by just 0.55 of a second – the closest fi nish in the history of the race.
