Dangerous Cranebrook intersection made safer three months ahead of schedule EMILY NEWTON

ith the turn of a key and the flick of a switch, a key intersection in Cranebrook has become safer for motorists and pedestrians. At 11am on Tuesday, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres officially turned on the new traffic lights at the busy intersection of Andromeda Drive and The Northern Road, three months ahead of schedule. “This is fantastic news for the Cranebrook community who can now enjoy a safer journey through this key intersection,” Mr Ayres said. “The Northern Road is a major northsouth connector through Penrith and the intersection with Andromeda Drive provides access to residential areas and schools in Cranebrook. “Crews started improvement work at this intersection in June to install new traffic lights and widen the southbound lane on The Northern Road heading towards Penrith, to provide motorists with safer turning opportunities into and out of the residential area. “We wanted to ensure the community can safely access this key intersection and these improvements will reduce the number and severity of crashes.”

W

Mr Ayres said it’s vital that safety is put first as the Penrith community grows and we see an increase in traffic. “This Andromeda intersection is particularly important for the Cranebrook community and we know from both the crash record and the unfortunate loss of life here, that we needed to change this intersection and now we’ve done that,” he said. In February 2016, the intersection was the scene of a tragic car accident which killed 17-year-old Kieren Birks. The intersection was identified as a local blackspot prompting Roads and Maritime Services to work with the community to find a way to improve safety. Mr Ayres said the NSW Government is committed to reducing the number of accidents on our roads. “We’re constantly evaluating the city as it grows, we’re also looking at crash patterns and we engage with the police pretty much every week to identify where we’ve got challenging intersections,” he said. “This one here was a little bit unusual, it had increasing amounts of traffic but it’s also on a deceptive bend that particularly inexperienced motorists often misjudged and that put them in front of oncoming traffic.”

O

nly in politics could two sports stadiums cause so much discussion, so many issues and outlast a couple of

Premiers. We finally have a resolution, however, which is more of a “you get a car, you get a car, everyone gets a car” scenario. Both Allianz and ANZ Stadiums will be knocked down and re-built, joining the new Parramatta Stadium to complete an impressive new stadium network in Sydney. I’ve always been in two minds about this whole thing. I get that $2.3 billion is a lot to spend on a couple of stadiums that won’t even be half full for most of the events they host annually across a range of sports. But I don’t quite join the brigade of people who believe the cash should just be directed to hospitals, schools and transport instead. That’s such a simplistic way of looking at the whole situation and while health and education are critical cogs for any State Government, sport and recreation is also vitally important. There can also be no denying that the current State Government spends plenty of cash in those critical areas like health and education and will continue to do so. Allianz Stadium apparently has significant safety issues and is some 30-yearsold. It probably needs more than just a fresh coat of paint (even though, to be honest, I’ve always found a trip to Allianz pretty stress-free and comfortable). ANZ Stadium is perhaps the more controversial one. It’ll be less than 20-years-old when the bulldozers move in, having opened just before the Olym-

pics in 2000. Safety is not so much an issue there, but the Government feels it needs significant change to be successful and attract more major events. But ANZ already attracts sell-out crowds when it comes to key events such as soccer internationals, NRL Grand Finals, concerts and State of Origin matches. Despite what NRL boss Todd Greenberg thinks, the upgrades are unlikely to attract one extra person to a club game, because even with a slightly reduced capacity of 75,000 and the fans being closer to the action, it’ll still feel like a ghost town. But not all of us run our cars into the ground before we splurge on a new one. Perhaps this is a bit of forward thinking from a government aware that the needs and wants of sports fans are changing. But for the NRL to think this will solve the issue of dwindling crowds is crazy. Fans simply don’t want to travel to

News..............................................1-35 Burger Competition....36-37 Business...............................39-40

watch their local team at centralised stadiums, particularly when there’s often trackwork on train lines or long traffic delays on approach to the venues. The NRL has convinced itself its fans don’t travel to Allianz or ANZ Stadium because of the quality of the venues but that’s simply not true. One disappointing thing in all of this is that the Outer Western Sydney Stadium, which many hoped would be built in Penrith, appears to have fallen off the radar. There was not a single mention of it in the press release issued last Friday when the Allianz and ANZ Stadium upgrades were announced. And yet at one stage a couple of years ago there was expectation that an announcement of such a stadium may only be a few months away. As late as April 2016, the NSW Government was saying a new rectangular stadium was still on the long-term agenda. But one gets the feeling longterm may be never. When all is said and done, the three new stadiums Sydney will have make a lot of sense – one in the heart of the city, one in Homebush and another in Parramatta. They will be the envy of the nation. But the extraordinary growth of areas like Camden, Liverpool and Penrith means a fourth stadium is needed to truly complete the puzzle. The State Government however is likely to argue, if it comes down to it, that the content may not exist to push ahead with the outer western Sydney venue. While the stadium battle may be over in theory, there’s still a few things to play out in the coming years.

Ready for school and a bright future thanks to innovative early intervention go out of their way. They’ve done such a great job,” Mrs Price said. “It was like a second family for us, they were always so pleasant and supportive through everything. “Not only speech and language but they were always around to talk, and encouraged us to link up with other families.” Deafness is one of the most common disabilities diagnosed at birth, affecting one in 1,000 Australian babies each year. It costs almost $20,000 a year to provide the essential early intervention therapy needed to help just one deaf child learn to listen and speak. Jim Hungerford, CEO of The Shepherd Centre, said the organisation is thrilled to see so many students setting off to achieve their dreams. “Many people don’t realise that deaf and hearing impaired children can have such a bright future,” he said. “Our graduates have outstanding speech, listening and language skills and are living proof of the power of early intervention support. “These children and their families have overcome many obstacles and we are excited to celebrate their accomplishments.” The Shepherd Centre supports close to 450 Australian families each year.

Now five-years-old, the kind and confident Sophie was born without an ear canal on the right side, but through services at The Shepherd Centre, she’s supported in reaching her full potential in the classroom and in life. Katie Price, Sophie’s mum, spoke about the importance of early intervention to help her speech and language skills. “It’s really important. Without it, she would just always be behind and falling behind,” she said. “Now she’s on par and above average in some sections compared to her normal hearing peers. “When they’re 18-months you think it maybe doesn’t matter, but it all helps to get to the point to be ready to be in the classroom environment with other kids.” Last week, Sophie attended her graduation from The Shepherd Centre having completed the organisation’s impressive and world leading Auditory-Verbal Therapy program. “The staff there are just amazing, they

enrith MP Stuart Ayres says he has received hardly any complaints about the new train timetable that came into effect this week. “I actually haven’t had that many complaints about it,” Mr Ayres revealed. “There’s 29 trains leaving Penrith Train Station between 6am and 9am. If Labor’s got a better timetable, they can show it to us.” But social media tells a different story, as frustrated commuters took to Twitter and Facebook to vent their anger. Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said “complaints weren’t emanating out of Penrith”. “Across the week, we’ve got a 22 per cent increase in services out of this station,” he said. “People are not hanging around stations, they’re actually on trains travelling across the network getting where they need to be.” When asked why Mr Constance believes the majority of Blue Mountains customers enjoy quicker journey times as a result of cutting Redfern from the Blue Mountains express services, despite a comparison of timetables revealing the journey was actually two minutes longer, he bizarrely stood firm. “The majority of people travelling from the Blue Mountains now get a quicker

It improves, people aren’t lingering on the station as long. “The inconvenience for 200 customers is something we’re sensitive to, but the reality is you’ve got five times the number of people benefiting. “It’s all very well to sit here and look at smart phone apps and say ‘point A to point B with a train’, [but] look at people’s experience, they’re turning up, [and] there is a frequent train lobbing up.”

hile there’s still some construction work to go, the upgraded Penrith Station was officially opened this week. State Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres joined Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance to officially open the redeveloped train station on Tuesday morning. “Penrith is an important transport hub, quite frankly the old station had just simply outgrown its space and capacity,” Mr Ayres said. “Having this bridge over the rail line makes accessibility between the north and the south side of the line much better. “I was only talking to the Police Transport Command last week in preparation for the opening and they were over the moon with the station.” While the wide bridge over the rail line is now completely open to commuters revealing sweeping views of the Blue Mountains, construction work is ongoing while the upgrade is completed. Transport for NSW confirmed that landscaping, permanent wayfinding and heritage interpretation work, as well as

W

removal of the former southern entry will be finished in early 2018. “From an accessibility perspective, the station is fully functional for commuters and now we’re just tidying up the last bit of aesthetics,” Mr Ayres said. Locals have voiced their concern with the accessibility of the station for people travelling with prams, elderly and people with a disability, citing frequent breakdowns of the lifts at the station, but Mr Ayres says replacements of the older lifts as part of the upgrade will make them more reliable for commuters. “There’s four lifts at the station, I think there is plenty of lift capacity for people to be able to get up to the platform,” he said. “I know that many people raised escalators, we probably would have been half way down Station Street had we tried to put an escalator into the front.” Transport for NSW confirmed that constraints to the construction of escalators included insufficient space as well as additional construction and maintenance costs. The lift at the north entrance to Penrith Station has been unavailable for use on several occasions over the past few months due to vandalism, and is scheduled to be replaced next year.

Minister gives airport update Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher last week delivered a detailed update to Councillors and local business leaders on the progress being made on Western Sydney Airport. Penrith Mayor John Thain welcomed the Minister and said the briefing illustrates the importance of Penrith to the success of the airport and a thriving western Sydney region. “It’s fantastic to have the Minister in our City to deliver an update on Western Sydney Airport, Cr Thain said. “I’m pleased the Minister is engaging with Council and the community in this open and direct way, reflecting the consultative approach that’s being taken with the airport’s development. “As a member of the Forum on Western Sydney Airport, I’m able to see first-hand the strong impact that consultation has on the planning and design process. Having a seat at the table ensures the voice of the Penrith community is heard. “And that’s vital as we’re the closest city centre to the airport and its success is closely aligned with Penrith’s success. “Penrith is a City with the space and the people to be the central hub of Sydney’s second airport. “Council recognises the significance and extraordinary opportunity tied up in the future airport but we also recognise it’s just the beginning for Penrith – it won’t transform our region in isolation.

Text campaign The NSW Government has joined forces with high rating 2GB broadcaster Ray Hadley in the latest campaign against mobile phone use. The latest figures show mobile phone distraction is a real problem with nearly 39,000 people charged last year for using their mobile phone while driving. This campaign asks the question ‘Your Last Text – Is it worth dying for?’ “We need to get the message out that using a mobile phone while driving is profoundly dangerous, Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey said. This latest initiative is a continuation of the highly successful Get Your Hand Off It campaign, which was launched in 2013.

Disqualified learner involved in fatal crash Investigators are waiting to interview the disqualified learner driver of a mini bus involved in a crash which killed a toddler in Kemps Creek on Tuesday afternoon. A major emergency response was initiated when a Toyota Hiace mini bus, carrying nine people, and a Mercedes Benz commercial van collided head-on on Mamre Road at Kemps Creek, shortly after 1.30pm.

Police believe the Hiace was being driven south and the commercial van driven north, when they collided head-on in the northbound lanes. A two-year-old girl was critically injured and died a short time later in The Children’s Hospital, Westmead. Paramedics treated a range of other injuries with a number of adults and children transported to hospital.

JOKE of the WEEK

emember that scene from ‘9½ Weeks’ where Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke do stuff with food that meant you never looked at a honey dispenser the same way again? Former ‘MasterChef’ contestant turned author, Beau Cook, has taken that age-old concept of combining food and sex and created a recipe book called Beau Cook’s Food Porn – for those who love a bit on the side with their main course. In a world where millions of Instagrammers are snapping every dish that lands under their nose, #foodporn is a widely used hashtag. Eating with our eyes has never been so popular. Beau Cook’s Food Porn is a feast for your eyes as well as for your belly. Food Porn. We all love the turn of phrase. Beau’s inner teenager loved what this could be. Being sexually suggestive with food is fun so Beau went about

developing a recipe book that took a light-hearted look at food and porn in a humorous and tongue-in-cheek way – or is that tongue in grapefruit? The book is illustrated with a range of bodies, ages, genders and culturally diverse models enjoying food in a variety of positions suggesting that this really is a book about real food for real people with real desires. Beau Cook’s Food Porn will have you rapidly fanning yourself with a banana leaf and blushing like a peach when it shows you more than one use for spaghetti or what to do with a zucchini. Flick through glossy and colourful pages of licks and laughs and create Beau’s recipes to feed your lover this Christmas. Beau Cook’s Food Porn is available through Amazon and other online retailers for $29.99. The Weekender has five copies of Beau Cook’s Food Porn to give away. For your chance to win one, send an email to competitions@westernweekender.com.

Triple J announced this week that its popular Hottest 100 countdown would be held on January 27 instead of Australia Day, where it has found a home in recent years. The Hottest 100 has been caught up in the Australia Day ‘change the date’ debate for some time now, and organisers have decided to move the countdown to what is considered a more appropriate date, after consulting with their audience. Some, however, have reacted angrily to the change this week.

Grand opening celebrations are continuing tomorrow (Saturday, December 2) from 9am, with something for everyone from giveaways to community performances throughout the day. “We have exciting celebrations planned for the community including performances and carnival rides all day,” Ms Barron said. “Vintage FM and The Edge Street team will be joining us for live crosses along with giveaways and games.” Magic Macy will also be performing her magic show at 9.45am and 11.30am while Penrith Panthers star Trent Merrin will be signing jerseys from 11am. With the two buildings forming one united shopping precinct, retailers were specifically selected in line with the area demographics to provide the ultimate shopping destination for the community. One of the major attractions of the new Town Centre is three leading supermarkets – Coles, Aldi and Woolworths.

Police Snapshot COMPILED BY EMILY NEWTON

Glenmore Park: Police search for car and driver after crash

At 5.30pm on Saturday, November 25 a 41-year-old Villawood male was driving his white Holden Captiva east along Glenmore Parkway when he had to stop suddenly due to pedestrians crossing the road near Morrison Street. As a result, the car behind him, a white SUV, collided with the rear of his vehicle. The Villawood man drove to a safe place to stop in an underground car park on Luttrell Street. As he got out of the car, he was approached by the driver of the SUV and punched repeatedly to the face and head. The driver has then left the scene. The Villawood man was conveyed to Nepean Hospital for treatment, receiving stitches. Police believe that the white SUV would have sustained front end damage from the collision and the driver is described as male, of Pacific Islander appearance, large build, bald head with no facial hair wearing a white singlet with tattoos on each arm.

St Marys: Man pulls out knife after concealing items in pants

Police have arrested a robber who, after filling his pants with cold stolen goods, pulled out a knife and threatened staff. At 2pm on Monday, November 20, a 39-year-old man and a 64-year-old man were working at a service station in North St Marys. It is alleged a 38-year-old male has entered the location, walked over to the drink fridge and placed some drinks down the front of his pants. He has then walked to the freezer section and removed ice cream and also concealed this in the front of his pants. He has walked to the front counter and had a conversation with the attendants. It is alleged the 64-year-old attendant told the man to remove the items from his pants. He has removed one item and placed it on the counter and was then told to remove the rest of the items from his pants.

The man has then walked towards the front door of the location, removed a 20cm knife from his pants and has threatened staff before fleeing. A short time later the 38-year-old was apprehended in Jordan Springs after a short scuffle with police. The man was charged with ‘Robbery armed with offensive weapon’ and ‘Resist officer in execution of duty’ with bail refused to appear in court on Friday, January 12.

Colyton: Drivers charged after police stop street race

Two drivers were caught doing more than double the speed limit during a street race in Colyton last week. At 9.35pm on Friday, November 24 police were at Colyton when they saw two vehicles pull out of Roper Road onto the Great Western Highway. At this time their speed was checked on radar at 123km/h in a 60km/h zone. Both vehicles were instructed to pull over. Police have spoken with the first driver, a 23-year-old male from South Wentworthville. Checks revealed that he was a P2 driver, so his licence was suspended on the spot and he was booked for speeding. He was also charged with ‘Organise, promote etc race between vehicles’ to appear in Penrith Local Court next year. The second driver, an 18-year-old Mount Annan man, who is a P1 driver, is to be charged with the same offences.

Kingswood: Police investigate after fires at railway station

Investigations are continuing into bin fires that occurred at Kingswood Railway Station last week. At about 11.35am on Monday, November 20, fire was reported in bins at Kingswood Railway Station. It is alleged an accelerant was used and set two large metal skip bins and four large plastic bins alight. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

What is sexual assault? Hollywood has been rocked in recent months by allegations against a string of A Listers of sexual misconduct. The frenzy has reached Australian shores with allegations surfacing this week by multiple women against Australian TV icon Don Burke for similar behaviour. What do the many different terms used in the media to describe sexual misconduct actually mean? Typically, “sexual assault” is used in two fashions. The first is an umbrella term used to describe all offences of a sexual nature ranging from sexual intercourse without consent through to unwanted touching and groping or unwanted sexual advances. Sexual assault is also used to describe actual rape, which refers to forced penetration of any part of the body of another person without consent. “Indecent Assault” typically refers to touching without penetration, for example, kissing, touching, groping or fondling usually of another person’s genitals. An “Act of Indecency” typically refers to a person performing an act of a sexual nature with or towards another person or making them engage in such

contact against their will, for example masturbating in front of another person. “Sexual Harassment” refers to things like unwanted sexual advances, unwanted sexual comments or other sexual misconduct that typically does not involve any touching or physical attributes. “Child Sexual Abuse” describes a range of sexual misconduct in relation to children or young people under the age of 16. This ranges from actual physical sexual conduct through to things like forcing a child or young person to view pornographic material. There are dozens of different offences designed to punish different levels of unwanted sexual behaviour. Many of these offences are treated as the most serious in our legal system so far as punishment is concerned, the worst of which attract similar penalties to offences of serious violence like manslaughter and murder. That these offences have been so prevalent in the media over so long a period time exemplifies the notion that so many of these offences go unreported due to the embarrassment and trauma experienced by victims.

Multiple charges lands man in court At about 11.05pm on Friday, November 24, police were called to a hotel in Werrington where it is alleged a 45-year-old St Clair man was intoxicated. After being asked to leave the licensed premises, the man allegedly began verbally abusing security and refused to leave. Police have attended and asked the man to leave, but at this time the man

has began to swear profusely at police officers. The man was arrested and charged with ‘Excluded person fail to leave premises when required’, ‘Behave in offensive manner in/near public place/ school’ and ‘Resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty’. The man will appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, December 18.

he battle for Penrith has made its way onto the sporting field. Continuing the State Government’s investment into sporting stadiums, Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced last week that Allianz and ANZ stadiums will be rebuilt and transformed into world-class facilities. Outraged NSW Opposition Leader Luke

T

Foley joined Member for Londonderry Prue Car and Labor candidate for Penrith Karen McKeown at Cranebrook High School this week campaigning for investment into schools and hospitals, not sporting stadiums. “The State Government’s decision to spend $2.5 billion on a couple of sporting stadiums is a kick in the guts for people here in Penrith,” Mr Foley said. “The maintenance backlog at this high school alone is $900,000.”

But Member for Penrith and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres has hit back at Labor, saying he is delivering millions of dollars in extra funding to local schools. “Our stadium plan is equal to one per cent of our health and education investment,” he said. “While Labor continues to deliver nothing but hot air I’ll continue to deliver the infrastructure, the schools and the hospital upgrade that the people of Penrith need.”

Penrith local Constable Lisa Myers has taken home the top honour as the Metropolitan Field Operations Police Officer of the Year. Recognised for her bravery and dedication at the 2017 Rotary Police Officer of the Year Awards, Constable Myers spoke at the event with passion. “When I first found out I was a finalist I was really shocked, and then that shock turned into excitement,” she said. “I was nominated for two jobs that I was involved in, the first being a shooting at Nepean Hospital, and the second being a fire at a local pub. “I remember both of those nights being relatively quiet, no one likes to say that word around here because we tend to jinx it but that just reinforces the fact that we never know what each day holds.” Earlier this year, Constable Myers was named Penrith’s Police Officer of the Year after only being stationed at Penrith Police Station since December 2014. “I decided I wanted to be a police officer when I was just 15-years-old,” she said. “I wanted to do something different each day. I didn’t realise how true this was going to be. While some jobs may seem repetitive, we never know what each day is going to hold.” She also publicly thanked her colleague Senior Constable Tim Duffy for his actions at the Nepean Hospital shooting, which she said saved her life. – Emily Newton

Senate’s approval The Equality Campaign has welcomed the Australian Senate’s decision to pass the marriage equality Bill before the Senate on Wednesday. “The Senate has acted on the mandate that the Australian people delivered and have voted overwhelmingly for fairness and equality,” said Alex Greenwich of the Equality Campaign. “Just as Australians came together for marriage equality, so has the Senate, and now it’s time for the momentum to carry the reform through the House of Representatives. “We got here thanks to the hard work and passionate campaigning of so many people across the country who stood up for a fair go for all.” The debate will continue next week.

$50,000 richer A father and son team from Penrith have been revealed as the region’s mystery The Pools division one winner from last week. Across Australia, there were nine division one winning entries in The Pools draw 1686 – including one sold at Nepean Village. The division one winning entries shared the $461,466.10 jackpot and each took home a division one prize of $50,162.90. This week, the Penrith dad and private syndicate leader presented their unregistered marked System 9 entry to NSW Lotteries to collect the prize. “I’d forgotten to check my ticket, but then I was sitting down watching the soccer and remembered,” he said.

Walking for a good cause Tony Mangan drops into Gaels club to raise awareness LAUREN SUTTIE

fter running around the world in 2014, Irish journey runner Tony Mangan said ‘never again’. Now, three years later, Mr Mangan is walking around the world to raise awareness for early cancer detection. “First I cycled, then I ran and now I’m walking, so I’m just getting slower and slower,” Mr Mangan laughed. “Now people are looking for ways I can do it again next saying ‘oh maybe you can do the world crawl’, but I’m kind of already doing that now.” Almost halfway through his world run after almost two years of being away from home, Mr Mangan received a message from Ireland that his mother had been diagnosed with bowel cancer. “I wasn’t sure if my mother would be there when I crossed the finish line with me, so it was difficult for the both of us and, in the end, we kept each other going,” he said. “This walk in many ways is dedicated to her memory and spreading a message of cancer awareness. “I’m not a scientist, I’m not a doctor, I’m just walking and doing the best I can.” Starting in Dublin on February 27 2016, Mr Mangan has since walked 18,000kms. After arriving at Scarborough Beach

A

Tony Mangan has seen plenty of sights on his walk around the world in Perth in late April, Mr Mangan spent the next few months making his way to Toowoomba in Queensland, where he has decided to take a break from the walk until the weather cools down. During his break, Mr Mangan has been visiting places in NSW, recently stopping by Penrith Gaels Club where he continued to spread his message about early detection. Mr Mangan said the best thing about the journey has been the people that he has met along the way. “I’ve had a wonderful time in Russia, Mongolia and China and it just keeps

getting better and now I’m in Australia, this is my favourite country so far on this walk,” he said. “People keep stopping on the side of the road asking me if I’m OK and offer me a lift, or to take my cart up ahead for me. And some even let me stay at their house.” When asked if he had an end date in mind for the walk, Mr Mangan said that he is just taking his time, taking it day by day. Mr Mangan will be in New Zealand from December 3, before returning to Australia to finish the rest of his walk.

Designing a big future in fashion EMILY NEWTON

ustralia’s next innovative fashion designer could be from our very own backyard as young local designers are hitting Sydney’s stage. The 2017 Fashion Project, a program for young people between ages 12 to 18 within the Erskine Park, Werrington and surrounding areas, gives participants a taste of what it is like to be in the fashion industry. Jane Ellul, from Community Junction Inc, said 13 young participants designed and produced a garment to the theme of ‘Once Upon A Time’ using recycled clothing and materials. “We started in April this year, the first part of the project was to go to Whitehouse Institute of Design where they did a one day workshop and learned the basic design principals,” she said. “They came back to the Youth Centre and spent a term coming up with their design and getting their inspiration, and then they had two terms to come up with their outfits. They’ve been very interesting, some have been straight from the book and others have really put their interpretation into it.”

A

In partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Arts, the work from the fashion project was on display on Wednesday, for a showcase night at The Rocks, celebrating the journey of each designer with statement pieces walking down the runway. Through the project, MiKayla Souter, Holly Souter and Chelsea Souter transformed themselves into Sandy from ‘Grease’, Tinkerbell and Robin Hood. “I like fairies and I like clothes. I wanted to do Tinkerbell this year,” Holly said. “I’m Sandy, this year was much easier than last year,” MiKayla added. “It takes time, and you have to be really patient. It’s very inspiring.” The fashion project challenged each designer to create an innovative garment while developing their communication skills, a better understanding of relationships between clothing and body, and growing their individual style while building friendships. Community Junction Youth Space program is a free youth service that provides a safe place for young people to relax, socialise and interact with other young people in the area. To find out more about other programs, contact Ms Ellul on 9673 6133.

Leave blame game in the past I do not care about the past and Labor (Timetable anger grows, Weekender November 24). No one gives a hoot. I care about right now and this Liberal government changing the timetable. There are no improvements, instead we face a longer trip and additional stops with Redfern being the exception. I have written to Stuart Ayres and Andrew Constance, guess what? No reply. I have travelled for a very long time and I am over these changes. At my stage of life, having to travel every day is taking its toll. I am happy with my service from the Blue Mountains as it is, I get a seat sometimes but going forward will be standing full-time, I do not want change. YVONNE WARNER, VIA FACEBOOK

Personally, I’m glad I’m getting to Central quicker, because I need all the extra minutes the new timetable frees up for me, plus the extra 35 minutes I also now have, what with leaving the house at 5am instead of 5.35am, all to ensure I get to the office on time at Redfern. I’m pretty sure those hundreds of commuters that flood out of the trains every day at Redfern will be equally chuffed. LAINIE SHEAN, VIA FACEBOOK

Commuters vent frustration I presume that the State Government

thinks we’ll all forget about the timetable change by the time the next election rolls around. I assure you, we will not. This has been the single biggest failure of this government so far, a timetable that makes trips to the city slower, and seems to have been so poorly thought out that you have to wonder how it got approved. This is a vote changer for me, and I am sure for others who rely so heavily on the trains. CHRIS SMITH, VIA WEBSITE

Labor should have done more Have to agree with Ayres. Labor sat on their hands over the last 40 years when they were in power now they are trying to accelerate infrastructure that should have been in place 20 years ago and hence the mess everywhere in Sydney. MARK GERBER, VIA FACEBOOK

Station not up to scratch I am very confused by the Penrith Station upgrade. I’m not usually one to complain, but I don’t quite understand what is better? The stairs to access the station are steep and troublesome. There’s no escalator. The kiss and ride parking is further away. Not enough lifts. No shops. Street level access to at least one of the platforms is gone. What exactly was improved? I’m legitimately interested to know! BARRY, VIA WEBSITE

rying to navigate your way through the shopping centre leading up to Christmas is enough to make anyone feel stressed. But for the elderly and disabled, shopping during the Christmas season is particularly hard. That’s why for the past 25 years Penrith Valley Rotary Club and Big W Penrith have been assisting those less able by hosting an exclusive after-hours shopping night just for them. Open to all disabled and elderly members of the Penrith community as well as their carers, the shopping night will be held on Wednesday, December 6 from 6pm to 8pm. Yet, three years into her double degree studying a Bachelor of Business and Information Technology at the University of Technology Sydney, Ms Chand said it’s the best decision she has ever made. “I can pretty much say that my family or friends didn’t have the slightest clue that I was going to pursue an IT degree,” she said. “You have that stereotypical image of someone sitting with their computer and their glasses and they’re typing away codes but it’s not like that at all.” Now in her final year, Ms Chand has been recognised for her high achievements after she was selected by Huawei to participate in their annual Seeds for the Future program. The program will see 24 students from the Australian Technology Network of University (ATN) institutions, join senior ICT lecturers on a three-week, hands-on learning experience across Beijing and Shenzhen in China. “Even though it is an IT-related program, we are going to be learning about the Chinese culture with a beginners introduction to Mandarin. Ms Chand and the other students selected will also visit Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, where they will explore the next generation of technology that is transforming the global economy including 5G. Huawei Australia Chairman, John Lord, said the program enables those students chosen to get a hands-on experience that will help them in the future. “We hope that this investment in Australia’s high tech future will inspire these bright young minds to drive the industry of tomorrow,” he said.

Arts and culture thrive in Penrith EMILY NEWTON

enrith is on its way to becoming a cultural hub of Sydney thanks to the passionate work of the Penrith Performing and Visual Art (PPVA) staff and artists. Chief Executive Officer Hania Radvan said both PPVA sites, the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and the Penrith Regional Gallery and the Lewers Bequest, experienced an extremely busy and productive year. “Artists are our heart, without them, we’re just empty spaces,” she said. “I think we have a really integrated model with education at the core, and most places don’t have that. We really embrace community.” There’s a lot more happening at the sites than just performances, as PPVA brings together the development, production and presentation of performing and visual arts all underscored by education and access programs. This includes the Penrith Conservatorium of Music and Q Theatre programs as well as the management of the Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest art collection.

P

“We have worked really hard to make sure we are present because we want to put Penrith on the Sydney map as a creative city,” Ms Radvan said. “I’m proud of the team, we’ve got a lot of really passionate people. We’ve got people who are really committed to this region, people with a lot of history in this region and people who are really keen to support artists.” While PPVA has seen a steady success for years, people are now starting to stand up and take notice of what’s on offer in Penrith following a very successful season. Participation figures for the 2016-17 financial year across both sites, on-site and digital, shows a growth in total participation of 46 per cent over the previous financial year. “We are committed to being the best possible and most accessible spaces we possibly can, and being consistently creative,” Ms Radvan said. “If somebody hasn’t been to either space, come and give it a try.” Councillor Jim Aitken praised the dedicated work of the PPVA staff and artists at Penrith City Council’s most recent Policy Review Committee meeting on November 13.

Hania Radvan believes putting artists at the heart of Penrith’s cultural hubs is what drives successful, passionate performances. Photo: Melinda Jane

This Sunday, December 3 is International Day of People with Disability – a day to think, talk about, and acknowledge people with disability. Penrith is celebrating with a community event on Monday, December 4. The event is free and everyone is invited to join us at the Mondo greenspace (between the Joan and Westfield) between 9.30am – 12.30pm to enjoy entertainment, hands on workshops including Brazilian dance and cake decorating. The Penrith Panthers will also be there to celebrate the day and throw the footy around with locals. International Day of People with Disability celebrates the achievements and contributions of people with disability, and how this enriches our community and culture. It also aims to break down the barriers of disability, and celebrate abilities of all kinds. With one in five Australians living with disability, this is an important issue that affects a significant number of people in our community. This event is a great opportunity to learn more about what living with disability

means, and to have crucial conversations about what we can do – as individuals, and as a community, to create a more inclusive Australia. This is a global event, established by the United Nations that raises awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability around the world. Each year the UN selects a theme, which provides a framework to consider some of the barriers that mean people with disability are excluded from society, and aim to promote ways we can remove those barriers. This year’s theme is ‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all’. The event is free and open to all, and promises to be a great day out. The event will also be accessible, however if you have any specific needs, please contact our Disability Inclusion Officer on 02 4732 8081. I encourage you to come along and get involved. More information about the event is available at penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ idpwd2017

Showing Christmas care When Jessica Craig lost her husband, she was overwhelmed with the response LAUREN SUTTIE

osing a loved one, no matter the circumstances, is always a difficult time in a person’s life. However, just as local Jessica Craig discovered, it’s often during these hard times that we are made aware of how generous and supportive those around us can be. Earlier this year, Ms Craig lost her husband, AB Peter Craig, in a motorcycle accident. Mr Craig served in the Royal Australian Navy and, after his death, the young family were overwhelmed by the amount of love and support they received from the Defence community. “Never have I truly understood the mateship ideal until this year,” Ms Craig said. “Pete’s colleagues, shocked by what had happened, set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for our eight-month-old son Jaxon and myself.” Expecting some support, even the campaign creators were astounded when the campaign finished up with over $30,000 raised. Now Ms Craig, in honour of her late serving husband, is putting together Christmas care packages with the help of

L

Jessica Craig and her son Jaxon pack Christmas hampers. Photo: Melinda Jane her business, Hugo Halliday, to send to deployed Australian troops. “We are sending these packages in honour of my late husband and to thank the service men and women for being

away from their loved ones this Christmas to protect our right to live freely,” Ms Craig said. Since putting up her post on social media last month calling for donations, Ms Craig

WW31447

has already received support from the community wishing to contribute to the cause. “The CEO of Moxie has also contacted me and will be providing feminine hygiene packs for all the female boxes, and a few smaller businesses have said they will donate things such as soaps, letters of support and aftershave. “And Jaxon’s day care provider is doing a donation drive and getting all the kids to create art for the troops.” According to the Department of Defence, there are currently 2,350 Australian troops deployed overseas and Ms Craig is encouraging the community to help send as many packages as they can in the hopes that it will make this time of year a bit easier for some of the troops. “We are so ingrained as a society to expect to spend Christmas with our loved ones, not having that opportunity must be exceptionally hard,” she said. “These packages are going to focus very strongly on making sure our troops know we’re behind them. I hope that message comes through and helps get them through the rest of their deployment.” Those wishing to contribute to the care packages should send their contribution to: 51/2 O’Connell Street, Parramatta 2150 by December 4.

Searching for ‘the one’ Forget Tinder, traditional face-to-face dating is making a comeback LAUREN SUTTIE

hile there is no doubt apps such as Tinder and OkCupid have taken over the dating scene in recent years, a few local singles are bringing face to face dating back to life in Penrith. Local Anton Hearn has been running the over 30’s single social group for the past year after he became fed up with online dating. “My marriage of 17 years had ended in early 2016 and, like so many others finding themselves in the same lonely situation, I recognised that most of my social circle consisted of mainly my relatives,” Mr Hearn said. “I needed to find a way to create a circle of new friends with like-minded people and Meetup was the answer.” Meetup is an organisation that formed following the tragedy of 9/11 after a group of firefighters found that regularly meeting up and sharing their feelings about losing their friends and work colleagues, helped them through the ordeal. There are now more than 288,000 Meetup groups around the world. Currently there are 354 members in the Penrith Singles 30+ Social Meetup,

W

A few of the local Meetup members however member Katie Murphy said there is a bit of a misconception about the group, which means not everyone comes. “I know a lot of people on the Meetup group who have joined who haven’t actually come yet and I think they are just a bit scared thinking it’s just a singles group,” she said. “It’s not really like that, it’s just everyone coming together, having a bit of a dance,

having a laugh and just getting to know new people in the area.” While Meetup’s main focus isn’t on match making, the group has still produced four couples including Mr Hearn, who recently met his current partner at one of the social gatherings. “We both agree that our success in meeting each other was because of Penrith 30+ Social Meetup,” he said.

“It is now a fun part of our lives to help others to find the same happiness of meeting someone compatible in real life.” The group regularly meets at different pubs and clubs around Penrith and have recently added more events to their calendar to welcome in summer. For more information on the group’s next social outing, visit www.meetup.com/ Penrith-Singles-30-Plus-Social-Meetup.

ocal high school teacher Amy Ciocca has been recognised for her involvement in helping kids to achieve their dreams after she was recently awarded the Sharp Short Dance Festival’s Excellence in Dance Education award. Dance and PDHPE teacher at Colyton High School, Ms Ciocca has been involved with the dance festival for the past six years and said that she feels privileged to receive the award. “I didn’t know I was receiving the award, it was a bit of a surprise and I was quite shocked, but it was really nice,” Ms Ciocca said. The Sharp Short Dance Festival is a dance competition for young choreographers and dancers under the age of 21, which provides dancers with an opportunity to showcase their own work and establish connections with those working in the industry. “It’s actually grown quite a bit because, in recent years, things like hip hop and street dance and even cultural dance have really taken off,” Ms Ciocca said. “It’s opened up so many opportunities out there for young dancers and choreographers.” Dancing since she was just two-yearsold, Ms Ciocca has a vast amount of dancing knowledge, which she now

Colyton High teacher Amy Ciocca enjoys sharing with her students. Since arriving at Colyton High eight years ago, Ms Ciocca has developed a strong dance program for both the junior and senior students, with the school now offering dance as an elective subject. “The thing that I love the most, especially in our school, is that the kids that I teach are full of talent and they’ve never been trained, so I am able to provide them with an opportunity to showcase the talents,” she said. “I feel honoured that I am able to give them the opportunity.”

nown as the little girl with a big voice, South Penrith’s Montanah Telefoni is already well on her way to becoming a big star. At just 10, Montanah already has a growing pile of awards, with first place in the national showcase, Fast Track, being the most recent addition. Her mum, Melissa Jones, said she still remembers the car ride when Montanah’s talent was discovered. “She was about three-years-old and a song came on the radio and then she started singing the chorus and all you could hear from the back of the car was this little kid with this gigantic voice penetrating over the front seat,” she said. “I literally had to stop the car and I turned around and I just knew from that moment that this was what she was going to do.” The youngest competitor in the Fast Track competition, Montanah received a standing ovation for her performance. “For the first part I sang ‘Greatest Love of All’ and then I got into the Grand Final and I sang a cover of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’,” Montanah said. “After the hours had passed and third and second had been announced, I was like ‘nah I’m not going to get it’ and then just to hear my name I was like ‘what?’, I couldn’t believe it.”

Singer Montanah Telefoni with her Fast Track Awards While most 10-year-old kids are kept busy with school, Montanah also splits her time between singing lessons, busking at Westfield Penrith as well as volunteering for Rap 4 Change. “I just try and keep her grounded. She has to keep putting the rubbish out, she still has to do chores, she’s still a kid but this is just something that she wants to do,” Ms Jones said. While she is aiming big – hoping to one day win a Grammy – Montanah said that if singing doesn’t work out, she’ll become a ‘singing’ surgeon. “I would love to become a singer, otherwise a doctor,” she said.

Festive spirit at York Public

New initiative aims to give teenagers more confidence LAUREN SUTTIE

ver 550 female high school students recently joined together in unity at Girls Rising 2017, a unique event that encourages girls to believe that their voice matters in helping to change society’s views on women. The event, hosted by Penrith Christian School, was held at the St Marys Band Club this year and guest speakers included local Olympian Jessica Fox and social activist Melinda Tankard-Reist. Founder of the event and head of Penrith Christian Senior School, Lyn Jagger, said that it is important for young women to feel empowered. “The idea around it is to empower girls to be able to stand up and make a difference against the media,” she said. “I think that our girls are under such pressure with the way they are meant to look and behave and the way guys treat them and I think they need to be empowered.” Year 10 students from Penrith Christian School – Lily Mikulandra, Zoe Green and Kate Brady – found the day to be inspirational. “We got to listen to Jessica Fox talk and that was really good because she was talking about how we can push ourselves further and that there is no limit to our

Matt Hill and York Public School students prepare for their Christmas event tudents and staff from York Public School at South Penrith are preparing to host their first Carols by Glow Stick event, and the community is invited to join in the Christmas spirit. Organiser, teacher Matt Hill, said the event, on December 8, is open to anyone willing to enjoy a carol… and maybe wear a glow stick. “We would like everyone in our community to feel welcome,” Mr Hill said. “It will be a great evening and we hope it will bring people together to share some genuine Christmas spirit.” The singing will be led by a group of carollers, comprised of talented students and staff, who have been practising for weeks, Mr Hill said. Food trucks will sell a range of delicious treats and glow products will be available for those who want to light up the night. Gates open at 5.30pm, with carols beginning at 7pm on December 8.

BUSINESS W What is your unconscious bias? bi

O

Promoting your business using prizes

Phil Voysey // OneGroup Leadership

Jane Tweedy // Western Sydney Business Centre

0457 999 987 | onegroupleadership.com.au

4721 5011 | info@wsbusiness.com.au

f course, that’s a trick question. If you could articulate it then it isn’t unconscious. Unconscious bias affects our decision making at many levels: who we choose to do business with or employ; what projects we pursue or abandon; how we invest money. According to psychologist Daniel Khaneman, we have ‘intuitive feelings and opinions about almost everything that comes our way. We like or dislike people long before we know much about them, we trust or distrust strangers without knowing why, we feel an enterprise is bound to fail without analysing it’. Mostly our automatic, intuitive brain serves us well. It is the brain’s time and energy efficient way of handling most daily interactions. But when it comes to business decisions intuitive gut feelings are rarely going to be good enough. This is when we need the rational brain to kick in. There are many types of unconscious

bias but three are worth mentioning here. One is confirmation bias, the tendency to select only the information that supports our point of view. We all do this to defend out positions and beliefs on issues. A second is optimism bias. An unshakeable belief in positive outcomes. This sometimes means overestimating our ability to do something. I have this problem every time I attempt handyman work around the house. But it has also led to some bad investment decisions. The opposite is negativity bias, which sometimes means that we can be driven more by the need to avoid losses than achieve gains. This is risk management on steroids. It can stop us seizing opportunities to expand or develop our businesses. In your decision making do you only seek out opinions and information that confirm your views? Do you tend more towards optimism or negativity in your decision making? Food for thought!

O

ne of the key P’s of marketing is promotion, and there are many options to use prizes for promotion. Prizes in your own competitions Most obvious is to run your own competition, typically linked to your social media pages. There are many considerations, and you must adhere to platform guidelines. It is preferable to use your own prizes, lowering the cost of the prize, and make sure the people entering are actually interested in your prize and therefore your other products or services. Offering movie tickets may appeal widely, but if they’re not your potential customers there is little point accumulating their likes. Competitions are governed by state and national laws, so consider where your audience is located. In NSW, a trade permit is required for all chance based/ randomly chosen competitions. Running a skill-based competition gets around this issue (e.g. tell us in 25 words or less …). There may be some relaxing of this in 2018 for small value competitions.

Prizes for publicity In a magazine, a competition rather than an ad for the same product will get more engaged views. You can research who offers competitions – for instance contacting the Western Weekender directly. However, there is a free service prizepig. com.au which you can sign up to and be matched with media needing prizes that fit their audience and your target customers. Vouchers as prizes The NSW Government announced changes from 2018 to gift card and gift voucher expiries to three year minimums to address consumer issues. The intention is to exclude charitable gifts, but other prizes haven’t been clarified, so please keep an eye out for the changes. Giving vouchers/prizes can be a great way to get low cost promotion. Make sure you receive public announcement at the event, and/or in promotional material or social media posts to get the maximum exposure. Share the event and your prize on your social media, tagging them to increase reach.

hat’s better than listening to an awardwinning female blues and roots singer? It’s listening to three award-winning female blues and roots singers, and this weekend you get the chance to do just that. Australia’s ‘blues sweetie’, Alison Penney and her ‘soul sisters’, Michelle Van Der Meer and Kerrie Sweeney will be bringing their ‘Women of Blues and Soul Showcase’ to the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival in Windsor. Performing individually since the 90s, the trio have now joined forces and are showing audiences that girls do it best. Soul blues singer Kerrie Sweeney (pictured) said that the idea of performing together was inspired by the fact that they had all won Australian Blues Music Chain awards throughout their singing careers. “We thought why don’t we put a show together, cause three heads are better than one, and get out there and show the people why we’ve won these awards and just let them enjoy the celebration and have fun with us,” she said. “We’ve known each other for a very long time so there is a real closeness and a real connection between us, so when we get on stage it’s not just a matter of just

It’ll just be perfect and that is really reassuring,” Kerrie said. Ê ‘Today’ fans are over the moon with the news that respected journalist Georgie Gardner will be back on the hit breakfast program as co-host in 2018. Gardner, who used to read the news on ‘Today’ until 2014, will link up with old mate Karl Stefanovic next year. Gardner was the hot favourite for the role following the departure of Lisa Wilkinson, although reports last month had ruled her out of contention due to family commitments. Ê Still on breakfast shows, and a huge congratulations to ‘Sunrise’ which celebrated its 15th birthday this week. The popular brekkie gang celebrated with a trip of shows around Australia.

Ê Not a fan of the nightly news? The ABC is set to launch a new quiz show at 6pm next year to go head to head with ‘Family Feud’. Tipped to run one hour each weeknight, the unnamed show will focus on pub trivia.

TV NEWS

Ê

In a surprise move, Channel Seven has axed ‘Murder Uncovered’ despite announcing it would return next year at last month’s Upfronts. It’s understood the crime investigation series, hosted by Michael Usher, was too expensive to make.

‘Instant Hotel’ wrapped up this week and I hope there’s a second season!

the streets of Harlem to entertain locals and viewers alike. The hour-long special will also feature never-before-seen footage of the band during rehearsals while inviting viewers into Mars’ world for some intimate and unmissable moments.

Ê Channel Ten’s live Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) coverage kicks off next week. The WBBL begins on December 9 while the BBL commences on December 19. All matches will be shown exclusively live on either Ten or ONE. Ê Lastly, we are just two weeks away from the most-anticipated TV awards presentation of them all, the Chatter on the Box Awards.

PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF LIFESTYLE EXPERTS

ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

your horoscopes

Mercury is backtracking through your travel zone until December 23. So expect some misunderstandings involving cars, buses, trains, planes, commuting and/or holiday plans. Wednesday and Thursday are fabulous for knuckling down and completing unfinished business. When it comes to lust or loot matters, prepare for a welcome boost courtesy of your power planet Mars. The more passionately proactive you are, the better the outcome.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Time-poor Taurus – you’re keen to plunge into a personal project or joint financial matter ASAP but make sure you do your homework first. Otherwise there’ll be major mix-ups or delays over the next three weeks. Gung-ho Mars races into your romance zone on Saturday. So it’s time to bite the bullet and patch up a partnership problem. Singles – you’ll have to be proactive.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Expect some communication chaos over the next three weeks, as mischievous Mercury reverses through your relationship zone. An unresolved issue from the past could also be dredged up all over again. If you’ve been experiencing an energy slump, then get your body moving! With Mars marching into your wellbeing zone, be more proactive about improving your health and fitness via a more nutritious diet and exercise routine.

Joanne Madeline Moore

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Daily posts at www.bohoastro.com twitter @JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2017

Mercury is now in retrograde mode until December 23. So it’s not a good time to start new projects or solve tricky problems. And expect disruptions or delays involving cars, computers or mobile phones. Over the next few weeks, you can look forward to a creativity surge, as Mars stimulates your fertile imagination. Mars also encourages you to be more social as you host a Christmas function.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Even though communication planet Mercury is retro, strive to keep communication flowing with friends and colleagues. A flexible attitude and a diplomatic approach will help you cope with any frustrating disruptions over the next three weeks. Mars moves into your family zone, so expect some fiery Drama Queen moments in the lead-up to the festive season. Don’t let anyone talk you into buying something you can’t afford.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

With Mercury reversing through your sign, expect some communication chaos over the next three weeks. The best way to handle hiccups and hassles? With plenty of patience and Sagittarian style. Action-planet Mars moves into your seclusion zone on Saturday. So it’s time to slow down and smell the roses. This week’s stars also focus on true friendship. Jim Morrison said, “A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be you”.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

With Mercury reversing through your home zone, expect some domestic dramas over the next three weeks. The more fussy and fastidious you are, the more annoying the problems will be. Try to relax and go with the (sometimes disrupted) flow. Mars moves into your communication zone on Saturday. So, when it comes to social media, think fast and be proactive.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

It’s a suitable week to revise, research, reschedule and reboot. Courageous Mars moves through your hopes and wishes zone from Saturday until January 26. So it’s important to dream a dream; turn it into a goal; and then make it happen. No procrastinating or complaining! As Walt Disney once said, “All your dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them.”

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Be very careful what you put on social media over the next three weeks, as it will be easy for others to completely misinterpret your true meaning. And there’s the potential for a serious communication problem on Wednesday, when Saturn and retrograde Mercury pair up in your talking, texting and tweeting zone. So check before you post. It is a good week to revise and re-evaluate old learning, as you revisit the wise advice of a former teacher.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

This week a long-cherished dream may need to be re-imagined and reworked so that it better suits your current situation. Rather than seeing it as a disappointing setback, smart Aquarians will perceive it as an exciting new challenge. On Sunday you’re keen to communicate about unconventional topics, as you share ideas with family and friends. But avoid blurting out something that’s totally inappropriate.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

With mighty Mars moving through your sign – until January 26 – it’s time to become as motivated and proactive as possible. Capitalise on the extra energy surge while it lasts! But remember that Mercury is in retrograde motion until December 23. So some areas of your life, like money, may appear to go backwards. Make sure you research and process financial information thoroughly.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Over the next three weeks, retrograde Mercury could cause problems in your professional zone. So do your best to be clear and concise with colleagues, clients and/or customers. You’re full of fabulous ideas but quit procrastinating! The challenge is to follow through on commitments. If you make a promise – keep it. And if you set a goal – work hard to achieve it.

I’d like to leave you with some simple advice for your health

In her final column for the Weekender, Kate Reid offers some easy advice for those looking to take care of themselves better...

Kate Reid Nutritionist kate.reid@ westernweekender.com.au @kate_reid6

Well, this is it dear readers. After more than two years bringing you the latest in food and nutrition, I will be saying a fond farewell as I take the next step in my career. For my last column I’d like to leave you with a brief summary of my philosophy when it comes to food/nutrition. Say no to diets Anyone who reads this column regularly will know of my disdain for diets. Research tells us that diets are not the

best approach when it comes to weight loss, with many people actually putting the weight back on – and then some. Instead start with one focus, like decreasing your portions by 10 per cent, and then move onto the next one when you feel confident to do so. This way you’ll be much more likely to get the long-term health benefits you’re after. Find what works for you With a variety of eating plans being shoved down our throats through social media it’s important to remember that different things will work for different people. Regardless of how you choose to eat, the most important thing is that you get the nutrients your body needs and are able to enjoy your food, rather than feeling shamed or like you are doing things ‘wrong’.

WINE LIST

If in doubt think plant foods If you want to improve your health the absolute best thing you can do is to eat more vegetables and fruit. With a measly five per cent of us getting the recommended five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit each day, this is one of the simplest and best things you can do for your diet. Choose the plant foods you do enjoy eating and look for ways to add them to your meals. Enjoy your food Lastly, the thing I’d like to leave you with is that food and eating should be enjoyable. We tend to take all of this too seriously with our list of foods we can and can’t eat. Instead try putting some fun into meal times. Take a cooking class, get creative with food combos, and spend quality time enjoying a meal with family.

he relatively slow development of Orange’s Rowlee Estate, established nearly 20 years ago on the northern slopes of Mount Canobolas by Deonne and Nik Samodol, has come to fruition with the recent release of its 2016 Chardonnay, which was awarded the Wine-of-the-Show Trophy at the 2017 Orange Wine Show. The wine also won trophies at the show for best white wine and best young chardonnay, in addition to a gold medal in the young-chardonnay class of the 2017 NSW Wine Awards.

The wine, made from grapes grown at 950m, is an outstanding chardonnay with admirable finesse and is a tribute to Nicole Samodol, Deonne’s and Nik’s daughter and winemaker, together with her partner James Manny. Nicole brought a wealth of industry experience to Rowlee, having worked in some of Melbourne’s leading restaurants and hotels, including the Stokehouse and the Adelphi. The eight-hectare vineyard includes chardonnay, nebbiolo, pinot noir, pinot gris, riesling and sauvignon blanc.

It’s the financial strategy that some believe can’t be legal, but it is! And it’s a great way to plan for retirement...

Alex McKenzie

In order to access these funds, money is transferred from superannuation to a non-commutable allocated pension, these are now also known as transition to retirement pensions. For those over 60, the income received from the TTR Pension is tax-free. This legislation also provided an opportunity for what is known as the income swap strategy. Those who continue to work full-time can also access up to 10 per cent of their superannuation, this results in a cash flow surplus. If this cash flow surplus is salary sacrificed into superannuation, there will be no income tax payable on these funds, and instead only contributions tax will be payable. Assuming the client’s marginal

tax rate is higher than 15 per cent, this will result in a significant tax saving. In the above scenario, the net income remains unchanged; however we have reduced the income tax payable by swapping taxable income for non-taxable income. The tax savings accumulate within superannuation increasing the end balance at retirement. It still amuses me how often clients ask if it is legal, which I understand, it does seem too good to be true! Once you reach 60, if you are continuing to work, it really is advisable to speak to a financial advisor in relation to transition to retirement, for most people it is likely to increase retirement savings significantly.

Principal Financial Planner Future Financial Services futurefinancialservices.com.au

We all know the old adage, if it seems too good to be true it probably is! This is almost always the case; however in financial planning we have an exception, the transition to retirement income swap strategy. The transition to retirement income swap strategy is an extremely popular and powerful pre-retirement strategy that involves using superannuation to swap fully taxable income with tax-free income. Unlike most strategies that we employ, where it is necessary to forego something to obtain a benefit, the TTR is all gain with no draw back. So how does it work? Well about a decade ago the government introduced legislation that allowed pre-retirees to access up to 10 per cent of their superannuation balance whilst they continued to work. The theory behind this was that it enabled them to transition into retirement by reducing work hours and supplementing their reduced income with money from superannuation.

The Christmas present that could save your child’s life Swimming lessons are a great gift idea for kids this Christmas...

PCC 648. STAFFY. MALE. 10 MONTHS. KENNEL 67. $385.00. AVAILABLE FOR SALE 23.11.17 This boy is happy, handsome and ready to find his Forever Home. If you are a family looking for a young energetic dog to share a run or walk with daily then come and meet this guy as he will make a great addition to most families. At just 10 months old hes a typical normal bouncy pup that just wants to have fun, hes ready for Adoption today!

It’s that time of year again, and the top selling Christmas gift lists have been released. LOL Surprise Dolls, Hatchimals, Watch Ya Mouth, Pie Face, Lego, Furreal Friends… How many years in a row can these toys continue to dominate? I have three children, so between them, we have pretty much ticked all of those boxes and I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but storing endless numbers of loud, bright plastic toys, and puzzles, Lego and board games with about a million pieces to pick up each evening has well and truly stopped being fun. I definitely don’t want to encourage any more technology coming into the household either, as more time spent on the iPad and/or PlayStation may just turn my children’s nearly square eyes completely screen shaped. So I got to thinking of a gift that needs no storage space, promotes health and safety, is fun, and teaches a skill that will last a lifetime. Swimming lessons ticks all of these boxes, and it seems I’m not alone in looking for a broader range of gift ideas. In an emerging trend over the past few years, we have seen parents, carers and

relatives also bypassing more traditional presents for experiential presents, or gifts which teach children a skill. Swimming lessons proved to be one of the most popular choices over the past three years, with gift voucher sales increasing year on year. Alan Bentley, owner of Nepean Swim and Fitness, agreed. “Based on recent conversations with our customers, I think we are all looking for gifts that will enhance our children’s learning outcomes, or provide them with a skill or an experience,” he said. “Plus with the usual start of summer focus on water safety, especially after last year’s tragic holiday period, when

presented with the comparison between buying another toy which will quickly lose its novelty, or potentially life saving swimming lessons, the choice is a no brainer to many people these days.” He added: “Of course children’s safety is a huge factor in the decision-making process when choosing the gift of swimming lessons, but I am also hearing from parents that they are reluctant to give their children another piece of technology to encourage screen time, and instead would like to see their children get outside and play. A gift that ticks both these boxes represents value for money to parents.” See you next week!

The real reason behind that early morning heel pain

Early intervention is the key when it comes to resolving serious heal pain issues...

Amy Meekings Podiatrist OnePointHealth 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au

Have you ever experienced intense heel pain in the morning as you get out of bed? Then as you tentatively take your first few steps in the morning the discomfort seems to ease? Only to then find after a moments rest (such as sitting down to dinner or watching your favourite TV show) that crippling pain is once again stopping you in your tracks? If yes – it is mostly that you have experienced ‘post-static dyskinesia’. Post-static dyskinesia is a medical term that identifies pain that occurs after a period of rest and within the foot, the heel is a common complaint. Post-static dyskinesia creates some confusion in its presentation as it tends to cause pain after rest, and most expect pain to be relieved after a solid night’s rest. The reason this occurs is because whilst you are sleeping, your body is recovering from all the stresses that had previously occurred. Microtears occur within the muscles after loads and recovery leads to shortening of musculature. Additionally, the position in which we sleep in results in our foot being in the

Master Coaching Penrith 4722 3072

How coaching outside of the school environment can make a real difference to the future career and life paths of students... Rob Ollis coached Jeremy from 1984 (Year 7) to 1989 (Year 12 4 unit). I firmly believe that Master Coaching was the sole driver in my personal development through my secondary education and this is my story. I started Master Coaching towards the end of Year 7. At that time I barely understood some of the basic principles of mathematics, my times tables were OK, my arithmetic was OK and my understanding of fractions was poor. For this reason I was placed into the fourth highest class. I was ranked 90th or so in the form of around 200 students. The next few years saw the development of my mathematics, I was pushed up a class almost each year and by Year 10 I was sitting firmly in the top maths class, 10A1. As my knowledge increased and

I achieved a top mark for maths, improvements in other subjects were also noticeable. There is no denying that Year 11 and 12 are difficult, stressful and over bearing at times. It was with great tutelage from Master Coaching that I went on to complete 4 unit mathematics in the HSC. I topped the exam with a mark in excess of 190 out of a possible 200. This mark alone provided me with around 50 per cent of my total HSC mark and enabled me to get into my first choice of University. Today I am a Senior Development Manager for a large development company in Sydney where I oversee major developments from acquisition to design, planning, approvals, construction and marketing. Master Coaching exists to inspire students. Our mission is to provide the most inspirational coaching possible. We are always looking for dedicated staff to be trained and work in our centres. plantar-flexed position (pointing down) which also shortens the calf muscle. As we rise from rest, we cause our ankle to go through a large range of motion before the calf muscle has had a chance to warm up and transfers load to the heel, or more specifically the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a thick connective tissue that originates from the heel to the toes and is unable to be stretched in excess before damage occurs. The pain of this force and loading is what is referred to as post-static dyskinesia and commonly associated with plantar fasciitis.

If left untreated, accumulative stresses and loads can damage the plantar fascia to a point where treatment becomes more difficult. Early intervention has shown to reduce pain more efficiently. Treatment options include: physical therapy, orthotic therapy, footwear modifications, shockwave therapy, injection therapy, to name a few. What may be simple morning pain can become something more debilitating. Make an appointment for an assessment to determine the treatment best for you.

Is something not quite right with your child? f you Google “child milestones” you will get around 700,000 pages of information. How do you know what sources to trust? And if every child develops at a different rate, how do you know when to be concerned? We asked SDN’s Leanne Clayton, an occupational therapist who works with children with a disability or developmental delay, to provide her tips. 1. Your child is unique. Every child hits milestones (like walking and talking) at their own pace. 2. You know your child best. The everyday interaction that you have with your child makes you the best person to know if something is not quite right with your child. 3. Learning comes from their desire to be socially engaged. If you are concerned about your child’s development, it’s more important to pay attention to their overall interest in the world than the exact day they reach major milestones. 4. If you think there might be a problem, ask for help. Your baby’s brain will develop rapidly in the first

Talking Automotive By Debbie Clark | Nepean Motor Group

The importance of servicing your car before the holidays As we are all aware the Christmas

WW31090

and New Year holiday season is almost upon us, and many of us have booked to take our families away on our annual holidays. We always try to remember to pack all of our necessities and ensure we take all precautions not to leave anything behind for our trip. But what precautions do we take with our vehicle, that could travel anywhere between one hour and in some cases, up to 15 hours? So, here’s a very important question for you, has your vehicle been serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements? If not, for you and your family’s peace of mind, you should book your vehicle in for a safety check, and if it has not been serviced recently, then it should be. Don’t be peer pressured into ditching the dealer and going to your local mechanic, while it may save you a few dollars, manufacturer approved dealerships employ factory trained technicians who can also check for any outstanding computer updates using the latest diagnostic equipment, and

check for any outstanding recalls, which your local mechanic cannot. When it comes to your family’s safety, cutting corners for a few dollars is a dangerous risk. Your holiday could be potentially ruined by a breakdown of your vehicle, simple precautions such as checking the brakes and ensuring there is plenty of brake pad life to ensure maximum braking efficiency and early detection of worn brake pads could also save you a huge expense if the disc rotors are damaged. Checking all the fluid levels and topping them up with the correct manufacturer’s specified fluids is extremely important, as well as checking all the tyres for pressures (including the spare, as quite often the spare is forgotten due to it being out of sight). While the pressure is being checked, a service centre will also check for any irregular tyre wear that might be occurring, and of course, how fun would a summer road trip be if your air conditioner stops working? These very important checks and simple fixes are a must-do before any family holiday. To those of you setting off early this year, please be safe on our roads.

Backrower Isaah Yeo has signed a two-year contract extension with the Penrith Panthers. Photo: Melinda Jane

Building for the future NATHAN TAYLOR

nderrated Penrith Panthers backrower Isaah Yeo has become the latest player to win a contract extension, with the club adding an additional two years to his current contract. The new deal means the 23-year-old future club leader will remain in Penrith colours until the end of the 2021 season. “I’m stoked with the situation and how it all panned out,” Yeo said. “The club has shown tremendous faith in me and I’m looking forward to trying

U

to repay that faith on the field with my performances. “I think the last two years have been successful, especially given the age of our playing group, and I’m very confident with where this team is heading. “I’m really excited to be here, it’s where I call home now.” A Dubbo product, Yeo tasted premiership success as he progressed through the grades at Panthers. He was a member of the club’s premiership-winning NYC side in 2013 and backed it up with victory in the NSW Cup Grand Final in 2014. Yeo made his NRL debut that same

year and has gone on to play 82 games and score 11 tries for the Panthers. “Isaah is an outstanding young man. He has come through the Panthers development system and now established himself as a mainstay in our NRL team,” Panthers boss, Phil Gould said. “Isaah already displays tremendous leadership qualities and we are delighted he has committed his long-term future to our club. “I have no doubts he will be a representative player in the years to come.” Meanwhile, the Weekender can reveal that Panthers and current Australian Test forward Reagan Campbell-Gillard

is on the verge of signing a massive, new multi-year extension to remain with the club. The news comes on the back of reports that fellow Panthers prop Leilani Latu is working on a release to join the Gold Coast Titans for season 2018. Despite having three years to run on his current deal, it’s understood Penrith won’t stand in Latu’s way if he wants to join former coach Garth Brennan up north. Penrith are itching to release Latu in order to free up funds to help sign two-time Premiership winner James Maloney.

Softballers set to star in Adelaide Four youngsters from the Penrith City Softball Association are currently interstate preparing to represent the NSW PSSA side at the Pacific School Games, which gets underway in Adelaide today. Local softballers Jessica Smith, Keira Field, Arbella Rice and Jayden Beckwith will play for the NSW PSSA side at the prestigious tournament, which runs from December 1 to 9. Pitcher and shortstop Keira Field said she was excited to be selected and proud to make the team. “I can’t wait to play against all the teams from around Australia and the Philippines,” she said. “I’m very excited to make new friends and learn new skills.” The Pacific School Games, run by School Sport Australia, features 4000 school-aged students competing across 11 different sports. The athletes hail from at least 15 countries, including every Australian state and territory. Fellow Penrith and NSW teammate Jessica Smith said she was surprised when she learned of her selection. “I honestly didn’t believe it was me… I was shocked and excited at the same time,” the pitcher said. “I can’t wait to travel to Adelaide and get to know my new teammates from other associations around the state.”

RUGBY UNION

Creating pathways Rugby union aims to strengthen player rosters of the future NATHAN TAYLOR

fter just four years the Penrith RSL Junior Rugby Union Club (JRUC) has its first group of U16s ready to transition into the Penrith Emus Colts program. Penrith RSL JRUC President, Adam Fletcher, said he saw what other junior clubs were doing around the state and wanted to emulate that at Penrith. “We have been able to emulate some of the other successful programs run by other junior clubs that want to filter their players through to the local premier club,” he said. The wheels on the idea began moving last summer after the club requested a select number of players participate in the Colts’ pre-season training. Fletcher said a major commitment was required from the teens playing in the Sydney-wide competition. “We asked the boys to make the decision to only play rugby when they registered with us, given rugby league is played the same day in Penrith,” he said. “I had heard too many stories over

A

Penrith RSL rugby players following their clash against St Joseph’s College in Apia the years about conflicting draws when teams had players still playing other sports the same day, it essentially derailed each team’s season.” Unlike many other sports, the Sydney Junior Rugby season traditionally breaks during school holidays. This year those gaps were filled with a number of representative fixtures which involved a considerable number of Penrith RSL players. From the total squad, 23 represented the Penrith District at the State Championships, 16 at the Zone Championships, six players represented Penrith at the

NSW Invitational, while two were selected to play for NSW at the Nationals in Queensland. At the completion of the National tournament, the club even had one player named in the Australian U16 Merit side. The highlights of the Emerging Colts program included a mid-season tour of Temora in country NSW and inaugural overseas tour of the Pacific. “Samoa was a great destination and tremendous experience for the squad and staff as they got the opportunity to play the best U16s the small Pacific nation had to offer,” Fletcher said.

Winning feeling Records tumble and demons conquered at Ironman 70.3 NATHAN TAYLOR

ussie Dan Wilson’s retirement plan went like clockwork last Sunday after he won the Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship title, set a new course record and went back to back at Ironman Western Sydney. And after a year riddled with complications from surgery, Melissa Hauschildt finally got the result she had been looking for, adding another championship title to her impressive résumé. More than 1200 athletes gathered at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith for the Australian debut of Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship Western Sydney. Crossing in 3:42:11, Wilson smashed his own 70.3 Western Sydney record by more than three minutes and immediately kick started his retirement party. “I really wanted that one, being my last race and an Asia Pacific Championship. I really wanted the win and with such a stellar field and such tough competition, it makes it all that sweeter,” Wilson said. “I wasn’t thinking too much about the

A

Dan Wilson and Melissa Hauschildt cross the line in Penrith last weekend race record, it was all about trying to win the race but I knew I was in good shape. I had the ideal preparation, sharpening up recently with a couple of races. I knew I was travelling OK, so it was just a matter of keeping my fingers crossed.” After a decorated career, Wilson said his final professional race will be one he’ll never forget. “This race will always be special and I was really soaking up the atmosphere going across the line. I will look back on this race very fondly,” he said. Meanwhile, female champion Melissa

Hauschildt finished the course in 4:07:05. The Aussie, whose endured a year from hell health-wise, didn’t hit the lead until well into the run leg when she went head to head over the final 10km with Sheedy Ryan. “It is such an amazing feeling to win this race and this title,” Hauschildt said. “I had surgery in March and I thought everything was going to go to plan and be racing by June but that didn’t happen. “I had a complication with the surgery and a lot of blood loss. The surgeon said I wouldn’t be able to race at all this year.”

Ayres celebrates Fox’s achievements Story continued from » p. 80 Despite finishing second in the final event of the C1 World Cup, Fox claimed the overall title after three successive wins earlier in the year. Penrith State MP and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, said Fox’s honour reflected the growing popularity and success in women’s sport. “Six of the seven NSW Athlete of the Year finalists were female athletes and Jess has overcome an outstanding group to capture the highest honour in NSW sport,” he said. Sydney FC’s record-breaking 2016/17 A-League season, where they set a record for most competition points in a season (66 points) and most wins in a season (20 wins) was recognised when named Team of the Year. Netball NSW and AFL NSW/ACT were named joint winners of the Organisation of the Year, while Hockey NSW’s David Thompson was named Administrator of the Year. The ceremony also saw swimming great Ian Thorpe elevated to Legend status while former Penrith basketballer Matthew Nielsen was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions. Sport NSW Chairperson, Joseph La Posta, congratulated the inductees, winners and nominees saying NSW continues to produce Australia’s premier athletes, officials and administrators.

Rising sports stars honoured for year of big achievements

McCarthy students received Blues Awards for their efforts in sport and the classroom NATHAN TAYLOR

ell-known for their many sporting accomplishments, McCarthy Catholic College has rewarded students who have performed exceptionally well on the sporting field and in the classroom with Blues Awards. Blues Awards are presented to students who have played in three representative teams for the Emu Plains-based school in 2017. It also acknowledges staff who coached at least two representative teams. Overall, 11 students and two staff members met and exceeded the necessary requirements, with each award winner

ugby league’s worst kept secret was finally confirmed late last week with the official appointment of former Penrith Panthers star Brad Fittler as coach of the NSW Blues. After the sacking of Laurie Daley in September, the former St Dominic’s and McCarthy Catholic College student was the prime candidate for the coveted role. After successful coaching stints with

R

the Sydney Roosters, City Origin and most recently Lebanon in the World Cup, the 45-year-old was confirmed as Blues coach for the next two seasons. “Brad’s qualifications for the role are impeccable and his standing within the game is pre-eminent,” Chairman of the NSWRL Board, Dr George Peponis said. “His recent efforts in the World Cup with Lebanon serve as a reminder of his talents as coach and they provide a window into the exciting future which he will bring the NSW Origin team.”

receiving a Blues Medal and a certificate of achievement. Students receiving Blues Awards included Jai Wynbergen-Titoko and Zion Tauasa for rugby league; Thomas Cass and Ethan Field for softball; Ryan Koenig for judo and wrestling; Sarah Blair for OzTag; Angus Bolton for swimming; James Paterson for BMX; Joshua Car for karting; Emily Woodhouse for dance; and Madison Higgins-Ashby for OzTag, rugby 7s and touch football. It was a big day for Madison, who also picked up the Paul O’Brien Medal. But it wasn’t just the students who shone brightly with teachers Ben Hunt (football) and John McKnight (rugby league) receiving Blues Awards for their commitment.

King of the track 10-year-old rider blitzes his rivals at State Titles NATHAN TAYLOR

outh Penrith resident Mat Clifton is officially king of the track after he recently took out top prize at the 2017 NSW Minikhana State Titles. Hosted this year by Penrith Minibike Club – Mat’s home club – the NSW Minikhana State Titles saw hundreds of kids from around the state descend on Castlereagh to compete in the biggest event of the year. The purpose of Minikhana motorcycling is to develop the riding skills and techniques of junior competitors by providing an organised competition where skill, rather than speed, is the determining factor. Mat competed in 12 different events during the two-day competition, which was held in late October. The 10-yearold was so impressive that he collected a whopping 10 medals as well as a first place trophy for being overall champion. The confident Year 5 York Public School student said he was thrilled to stand atop of the podium. “Before the competition, I thought I

S

Mat Clifton achieved great success at the 2017 Minikhana State Titles was a 50/50 chance to win it all,” Mat said. “I was absolutely stoked when I won though; I’d never done this well before.” Also skilled at cricket and footy, Mat began riding dirt bikes four years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

Mat got the itch to ride after his father, Jason, purchased him a quad bike. On top of taking out the NSW Minikhana State Titles recently, Mat was also named Series Champion for his efforts over the course of the entire season.

MINIKHANA

Roos select same line-up for Final Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga named an unchanged squad for this Saturday night’s Rugby League World Cup Final against England in Brisbane. “This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and I am proud of the efforts of the entire squad leading into the World Cup Final,” Meninga said. “It has helped significantly to have an unchanged line-up over the quarter final and semi final stages as we look to build into the Final. “This will be an enormous occasion for the game and for these players and I’m sure they will all do their country proud on Saturday night.” Penrith forward Reagan CampbellGillard is the only Panther named in the 21 man squad after Cameron Munster and Ben Hunt were selected on an extended bench in place of Josh Mansour and James Maloney. Campbell-Gillard, who has been an outstanding addition to Meninga’s team, will once again come off the bench in jersey number 16. Meanwhile, Newcastle-bound forward Chris Heighington has been recalled to the English side after Canberra hooker Josh Hodgson was ruled out with an ACL injury. St Helens skipper James Roby will take Hodgson’s spot at dummy half.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith are in control against Randwick-Petersham during Round 6 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition. Playing in a two day match at Howell Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. The home side were dismissed for 191 runs, with Ryan Gibson top scoring on 47. When Randwick-Petersham hit the crease later that afternoon, they were a disappointing 5/94 before stumps. Luke Hodges was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/20. Play resumes this Saturday at Howell Oval. CRICKET: The Sydney Thunder has signed batsman Callum Ferguson on a three-year contract. Ferguson joins the club after spending three seasons with the Melbourne Renegades, having also played for the Adelaide Strikers. “There’s a lot of things that attracted me to Sydney Thunder, Sydney’s a great city and I’m looking forward to the experience of being a senior player in a young and talented group,” Ferguson said.

AUSSIE RACING CARS: Western Sydney Motorsport driver Blake Sciberras has finished third overall in the Aussie Racing Cars competition after a horror weekend in Newcastle. Sciberras led the standings by a single point heading into the final round but a mechanical problem two laps in to the second race forced his exit. Sciberras did manage to bounce back in the third and final race of the weekend but his fifth placing in that race wasn’t enough to earn him top spot. Fellow Western Sydney Motorsport driver Craig Woods finished the season in fifth place after suffering mechanical drama in the first race. AUSSIE RULES: The GWS Giants had five picks in last Friday’s AFL Draft, with the club drafting midfielder Aiden Bonar with pick 11. The Giants also selected Brent Daniels at 27, Sam Taylor at 28, Zac Langdon at 56 and western Sydney product Nick Shipley at 64. Hailing from Campbelltown, Shipley is a tall, strong midfielder and a contested ball-winner with a terrific work-rate. SOFTBALL: The Penrith City Softball Association Open Men’s team finished fifth at the 2017 NSW Open Men’s State Championship last weekend. The side managed to win two games during the competition.
