Penrith will be the first Australian home to popular US fast-food chain Five Guys EMILY FESZCZUK

C

lassic American burger chain Five Guys have announced that Penrith has made the cut and is set to becomes its first store location in Australia. Ending speculation of what would replace the former Spur restaurant on Mulgoa Road, the 500 square metre site is set to open by mid-2021 for those who love a good old burger, hot dog and shake. While initial plans suggested the Sydney CBD would house the first store, Seagrass Boutique Hospitality Group, which has the Five Guys franchise rights, decided to look out of the city at suburban hubs. Five Guys Operations Manager, Robby Andronikos, said Penrith was chosen due to its potential for future growth. “The western suburbs are known for their love of burgers and fast-casual dining plus the local area has higher than average population growth annually across the last decade with infrastructure investment such as a new airport being built to cater to this growth,” she said. “The Panthers location is the best location within Penrith given the proximity to the popular Leagues Club with the multiple entertainment options, plenty of

Some of the items that will be on the Five Guys menu when it opens mid this year. parking and great visibility from Mulgoa Road.” With the Panthers precinct becoming home to the first Krispy Kreme store outside of North America in 2003, Panthers Group Head of Property, Matthew Leavey,

said they are excited to be repeating history. “Following our public Expression of Interest campaign, we had 28 interested restaurant operators for the space,” he said, with Milky Lane believed to be one of

the interested parties. “All submissions were of a high quality and were given due consideration, however we were excited to be able to bring the first Australian Five Guys to Penrith once we took time to understand the cult following the brand has built in America and Europe.” While Penrith could be crowned the burger capital of Australia with a long list of local joints, Ms Andronikos said Five Guys will hold a strong position in the burger market. “Five Guys is a family- run burgers and fries joint that has a focus on fresh and quality ingredients with a menu that will make sure you get more than you expected,” she said. “It is 100 per cent real food that is cooked to order, customisable to your taste and, with the unlimited add- ons with the burgers and shakes, there really is no comparison.” Ms Andronikos said they are confident the Penrith store will be a success and are planning to expand. “It is a fantastic brand, great location and we will hire a superstar team to execute the brand’s exacting standards,” she said. “We are currently investigating other metro locations across the eastern coast of Australia, including Sydney CBD.”

Get the jab, shut your gob T

he year of the COVID vaccine is upon us. And it’s also the year that the anti- vaxxers, conspiracy theorists and general dunderheads hope to thrive. I’ve heard it all, as I’m sure you have. COVID-19 is a complete farce that every world leader is in on. The vaccine is worse than the virus, and I won’t be touching it. The vaccine causes infertility. The media is pushing an agenda around the virus and the vaccine. I’d love to say this is all coming from people wearing tin foil hats, but it’s not. People I respect, am friends with, have known for years... so many are sprouting or posting this crap. And it almost always comes with this disclaimer: “I’m just saying you should do your research”. But if you did your research, you’d know that what they’re claiming is total BS, unless of course you carefully and specifically choose where you do your research and drink the Kool Aid from. The irony is astounding. They want us to “do our research”, yet it’s clear they haven’t done their own. These people who think the world is out to get them would rather listen to ill- informed whack- jobs online than they would scientists, doctors and other medical professionals. They’re the same people that live in such a bubble that they don’t realise that it is vaccines that have ensured they live healthy lives today; that the efforts of the past have made our futures so much brighter. The world did not start when you were born despite how self-absorbed we can be sometimes.

Index

“The world did not start when you were born despite how selfabsorbed we can be sometimes”

As for the media pushing an agenda, this has intrigued me from the very start of the pandemic. The media, like many sectors, was hit significantly hard by the COVID- 19 pandemic, and is certainly not celebrating it. Advertising fell off a cliff, leading to many newsrooms to shut down completely, and thousands of journalists, designers, sales executives, marketing people and the like to lose their job. But sure, we’re all in on it. Prime Ministers, Presidents, Editors, Journalists, Doctors, Scientists and Nurses all got together on a massive Zoom call and decided, to a man, to trick the world so we could control every individual like a computer game. The vaccine itself has come around quick, I’ll give you that. Largely we should be celebrating that rather than suggesting it’s “too quick” and therefore

must be flawed. You trust scientists on climate change, why don’t you believe them now? So yes, I’ll certainly get the vaccine – I mean, let’s be honest, I probably put a lot worse things in my body over the Christmas break. And I’ll be proudly encouraging everyone else to do it too, because I cherish the general freedom we enjoy, the world class health system, and the benefits of those who walked before me in creating vaccines, strong economies, technology, research and education that I win from every day. If you think Coronavirus has been the ultimate farce, that this is all just pretend, I’ve got some news for you: you’re the problem. Like many, this time last year I thought this was one of the greatest over- reactions of our time, but I quickly learned otherwise. Did that research I guess. Just remember, if someone says the vaccine is flawed and causes you significant problems, ask them for their degree. If they’re not a scientist, it’s probably safe to dismiss it. If someone argues the media has an agenda, ask them what newsroom they’ve been in recently. If they’re not an Editor or a journalist, again, dismiss it. As for being told to do your research, absolutely – do it. But before you read one article from a website you’ve never heard of quoting somebody you’ve equally never heard of, look for the alternate view. Research is only good research if you look at both sides of the story, and too many people are failing to do that.

New rural-themed food and drink destination given approval by Penrith Council ALENA HIGGINS

T

he fence banners have been teasing visitors to Tench Avenue for months. And now, lovers of the Nepean River precinct will have another reason to descend on the area, with confirmation that new hospitality offering ‘The Orchard’ is set to be unveiled later this year. Plans to develop 44- 50 Tench Avenue, Jamisontown into a top class rural-themed food and drink destination were finally given Penrith Council approval earlier this month. Once complete, the waterfront venue will boast an artisan bakery, dining and restaurant pavilion, weekend farmers markets, large farm- styled playground, florist, fish and chips store, and woodfired pizza shop. Animal yards, where children can experience farm animals first hand, are also an exciting feature of the development. The brainchild of successful hospitality operators Phillip Hallani, Terry Chaouk and Jacob Farragher, the project will be built just north of the East Bank hub. Mr Farragher, who along with Mr Hallani owns Penrith’s Percy Plunkett cafe, said the new venture promises to offer some-

will also have a heavy focus on takeaways, with two coffee stations. “You can come in and have a pastry and you can buy a cupcake and a coffee, milkshake for the kids and then sit in the garden, or you can come and dine-in in the pavilion,” he said. The development will involve converting an existing dwelling into a restaurant, constructing several new structures and building car parking on site.

Once a commercial orchard, about 80 orange trees will be retained on the massive 2.3ha block, which will be landscaped throughout and include vegetable gardens. Mr Farragher hopes the first sod will be turned in a matter of weeks. “Ideally we would like to begin construction by the start of March and have the project open by the fourth quarter of this year,” he said.

Pensioners “absolutely hammered” by rates rise ALENA HIGGINS

P

enrith Council is being implored to show empathy and find a financial solution to rates stress, as some pensioners remain unable to pay their bill following steep increases in 2020. Rates in certain suburbs across the city have soared in recent years, with rural ratepayers taking the brunt, some of whom are recording increases of $5,000 on 2019 figures thanks to new land valuations that came into effect on July 1, 2020. Speaking during last month’s Council meeting, Councillor Bernard Bratusa lamented the fact that Council has “not come up with a policy to help these people”, and begged Council staff to find a solution. “They quite simply can’t afford to pay their rates,” he said, referring to the plight of one particular couple who owe $9,000. “We have pensioners across the city that have been absolutely hammered by the rate increases.” Cr Bratusa said the couple contacted him after they received a phone call reminding them they had until December 31 to pay. “They can’t pay,” he said simply, “and

A 6 ANG 634 34 3 41

“It’s our happy place. It’s home.”

I’ll go on record as saying ‘I told them not to pay’.” Cr Bratusa said he knows a number of his fellow Councillors have also been approached by ratepayers facing a similar predicament. Back in September, Cr Bratusa questioned if there was a way for Council to waive or postpone the increase or at least extend the waiving of interest charges. A Council spokesman said Council has been advocating the NSW Government for reforms to the way rates are assessed for rural properties for many years – and relief may finally be in sight. “On December 27, 2020, the NSW Government released a draft Bill for amendments to the NSW Local Government Act to allow Councils to change the way rates are assessed between rural and urban properties,” he said. “Council will review any changes that are legislated to provide rate relief for rural owners including pensioners.” The spokesman said ratepayers experiencing financial hardship can access a range of assistance measures, including instalment plans and extensions of time to pay. “We encourage residents to contact Council’s Rates Enquiries on 4732 7676 or email rateshelp@penrith.city so we can understand their individual situation and work with them,” he said.

Impressive new health and wellness centre on the cards for vacant St Marys site ALENA HIGGINS

P

lans are afoot to transform the former Masters site at North St Marys into a health and wellness precinct. Home Consortium – which acquired Masters’ assets soon after its collapse in 2016 – has lodged a development application (DA) to alter the existing warehouse and car parking area at the vacant Forrester Road site. To be known as HealthCo, the 3.2 hectare precinct would feature 14 tenancies, including a 138- space childcare centre, medical centre and vet. Other proposed tenants include a pharmacy, gym, indoor recreation facility, dentist, imaging, physio, pet supplier, specialised retail, health food and coffee kiosks. According to the recently-submitted DA, the $4.6 million proposal would provide services that are currently in “acute under-supply” in the local area. “The proposal would transform this ‘gateway’ site into a health and wellness hub to complement neighbouring sporting and recreation facilities, residential and industrial areas and the nearby St Marys Town Centre, which is planned for

significant growth in association with the delivery of the Greater Western Metro,” it states. About 130 jobs are expected to be generated from the redevelopment, while car spaces will increase by five, taking the total number to 372. “Car parking and loading facilities would make use of the existing infrastructure adjacent to the street frontage, allowing for mature trees within the street setback to be retained,” the DA states. “New landscaping would also be introduced across the site to enhance its ‘green’ character.” It comes after a Planning Proposal, which sought to amend the building height standard to support a four- storey residential aged care facility and organic grocer on the site, was knocked back by Penrith Council. The Planning Proposal, which was lodged in July 2020, was subsequently withdrawn in October. Home Consortium has already revitalised the former Masters site at Penrith, which is now home to a number of established lifestyle brands. Woolworths sunk about $3.25 billion into its failed foray into the home improvement sector before it shut Masters’ doors back in 2016.

A new specialist mental health hospital could be coming to Kingswood, if approved ALENA HIGGINS

I

nvestment in Kingswood’s health and education precinct continues to surge, with plans to build a specialist mental health hospital. The five- storey private health facility would contain 90 beds, associated health services and car parking for 92 cars. Located opposite the recently constructed multi - storey car park complex associated with Nepean Hospital, the development site resides on the intersection of Somerset Street and Hargrave Street, Kingswood. According to the recently- submitted development application (DA), the hospital will also include eight large consulting rooms and basement car parking. “The development itself will consist of a five- storey building with a total of 90 rooms dedicated for mental health inpatients, a document attached to the development application (DA) states. “The ground floor includes a pharmacy, health consulting rooms, group rooms, consulting rooms and a gymnasium. The $29.5 million DA was submitted by Barwon Investment Partners last month and is being reviewed by Penrith Council. According to the DA, the proposal forms

Stage 2 of a staged development approach to deliver two specialised four to fivestorey private hospitals in the Quarter, Penrith’s Health and Education Precinct. Stage 1 has already been completed and consists of the four- storey Somerset Specialist Centre, an integrated cancer care hospital at 29-33 Derby Street and 38 Somerset Street, which neighbours the subject site. The latest DA follows a string of investment by specialist private providers in the precinct.

In November, a DA for a medi- hotel, which would be located on the opposite corner of Somerset Street and Hargrave Street and cater to pre and post-operative patients and their families, was lodged by Boston Global. That proposal included a seven- storey building containing 140 rooms, rooftop bar and restaurant, and is expected to be run by an internationally renowned hotel operator, if approved. Furthermore, in April 2020, planning approval was granted for a $29 million,

five- storey sub- acute hospital at 39- 43 Orth Street. Kingswood Private Hospital will include a mental health unit and an inpatient rehabilitation unit, consultation rooms, a hydrotherapy pool and physiotherapy gym. Ancillary services, such as a hairdressing room and a cafĂŠ, will also be included. Nepean Hospital is also currently undergoing a $1 billion redevelopment, including a new 14-storey hospital tower due for completion in 2022.

Safety a priority for new PP&VA boss A

fter the pandemic caused closures and cancellations for the entertainment industry, Penrith Performing and Visual Arts (PP&VA) wants to shine a spotlight back on the arts sector. Leading the multi- arts organisation, which comprises of The Joan, Penrith Regional Gallery, Penrith Conservatorium and Q Theatre, into 2021 is the newly appointed Board Chairperson, Alison McLaren. A PP&VA Board member since she joined as a director in 2015, Ms McLaren enjoys giving back to a sector that she loves. “I am not a very creative person, but I love the arts and think they are an important part of the social fabric of our region,” she said. “The opportunity to participate on the Board allows me to use my skills in management, communication and government to ensure the organisations run in a way that benefits the whole community.” Replacing retiring Chairman Peter Anderson, Ms McLaren is excited for what the future holds under her leadership. “Peter was a fantastic Chairman and had

such a strong commitment to the arts and western Sydney for a very long period of time,” she said. “I would like to build on Peter’s legacy and use the opportunity that has come from COVID to look at how we can do things differently as we are facing a whole new environment.” Ms McLaren said a key priority for PP&VA is to ensure the public feel safe returning to their venues during the current climate. “Ensuring our patrons feel safe coming along to the fabulous program of events that we have is a priority we are implementing with our COVID- Safe plan, lots of sanitiser, social distancing and reduced capacity,” she said. “We have a number of shows on at The Joan and Q Theatre along with free exhibitions at Penrith Regional Gallery and learning programs at Penrith Conservatorium, which the Creative Kids Vouchers can be used for.” With staff at PP&VA constantly adapting to changing circumstances, Ms McLaren said they are hoping for a strong recovery. “The staff continue to do an incredible job in managing everything on a rolling basis and we are well- placed to drive an arts led recovery from this pandemic,” she said.

A lifetime of memories Nepean Hospital has farewelled its Midwifery Unit Manager after three decades EMILY FESZCZUK

W

hen Faye Mathews took a job in the birth unit at Nepean Hospital, she never thought she would end up staying for 30 years. Ms Mathews, who is the Midwifery Unit Manager in the Women’s and Children’s Outpatients Department, has just retired after three decades of service to the Penrith community. A nurse for 50 years, the Faulconbridge resident said nursing runs in the family. “I went down a different career avenue, but my mother and two sisters were nurses and I admired what they did and their knowledge,” Ms Mathews. “I decided I would try to do nursing then I went into midwifery 36 years ago, which was my real passion, so when the job came up in the birthing unit at Nepean, I jumped at it.” The Midwifery Unit Manager for the last seven years, Ms Mathews said helping people has been a highlight of her career. “The best thing about my job has been helping women through pregnancy in the antenatal clinic and then through labour as it gives you such an amazing feeling, as soapy as that sounds,” she said. “I have also really enjoyed mentoring

students and them achieving great things in their positions in the hospital.” Ms Mathews said she was overwhelmed when her workmates celebrated her retirement, complete with a nursing- themed cake. “I was just so overwhelmed with everyone being there for me, I can’t even describe the feeling,” she said. “It has been a pretty tough job but my colleagues, who have become beautiful friends, have made it all worth it and I am going to miss them so much.” Enjoying her newfound free time, Ms Mathews said she has a few things she wants to focus on in retirement. “Working sometimes 12- hour shifts as a nurse, you don’t have the time to look after your body properly, so I want to concentrate on taking care of my body with exercise,” she said. “Some of the ladies I worked with have retired already so I would like to socialise with them more, and travel is very high on my list once we are allowed. “I am going to miss work terribly but I know I have made the right decision as it was time to go and I am excited to see what is next for me.” Do you have an inspiring community story like this one? L AW a n d O R D E R Werrington: Man charged for weapon in public place

A man has been charged for having a weapon in a public place and trying to escape police custody in Werrington. About 2.30pm on Friday, January 15 police were alerted to a suspicious male holding a weapon and attended a unit complex in Parkes Avenue, Werrington. Police located a 35-year-old homeless man that matched the description and spoke to him. It is alleged the man showed police an extendible metal pole and gloves, which he had in his pants. After police arrested and cuffed the man, they were escorting him to a nearby police vehicle when it is alleged that the man tried to run. After engaging in a short foot pursuit, police caught the man a short distance up the road. He was charged with ‘have custody of an offensive implement in public space’ and ‘escape police custody’. He was bail refused and appeared at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, January 19.

14

WW42958

Police were called to a house fire on Jamison Road, Kingswood about 6.30pm on Saturday, January 16. When police attended, a resident was attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose until a neighbour removed them. As the fire increased, NSW Fire and Rescue attended and police evacuated nearby neighbours. One the residents attempted to re-enter the house to retrieve a dog but, due to the flames and thick black smoke coming from the house, the resident was physically removed. The fire brigade took about 2.5 hours to extinguish the fire and located the resident’s dog deceased on the first floor of the house, under a bed. No persons were injured in the fire and it has been deemed

as not suspicious. It is alleged the fire started in the garage from a battery charger.

St Clair: Armed man charged with two counts of assault

A man has been charged after being armed with intent in St Clair. About 9.20pm on Saturday, January 16 police were called to a house in Ashwick Circuit, St Clair. It is alleged a 23-year-old St Clair man walked into the backyard of the house, where the occupants were. The man had a tyre iron and was swinging it at the occupants. It is alleged the man’s behaviour became more aggressive when a 22-year-old woman asked the man to leave. It is also alleged the man swung the tyre iron which struck the woman in the face before she ran inside the house. The man continued to swing the tyre iron when it allegedly hit a 23-year-old man in the back of the head. Police attended a short time later and the man was arrested. He was charged with ‘common assault x 2’ and ‘armed with intent’. He was refused bail and appeared at Penrith Local Court on January 21.

North St Marys: Out-of-towner busted for driving while disqualified

A man has been charged after driving with a disqualified licence in North St Marys. About 11.20pm on Sunday, January 17 police were patrolling Forrester Road, North St Marys and stopped a vehicle for a random breath test. The test proved negative and police spoke with the driver, a 38-year-old Coffs Harbour man. Checks revealed that the man’s license was disqualified, and he was arrested. He was charged with ‘drive motor vehicle during disqualification period 1st+off’. He will appear in Court on February 9.

What exactly is a contract? We have had a few cases recently that constitute good old fashion contract disputes. Contracts take a range of different forms and some of the cases we have been dealing with have been in relation to breaches of written contracts, verbal contracts, or a combination of both. We thought we would take this opportunity to provide our readers with a brief explanation of what constitutes a contract. Generally speaking, a contract can be described as an agreement between two or more parties whereby there is some type of exchange that is intended to be legally binding. Common forms of written contracts that people sign every day include contracts for the sale of land, finance contracts for mortgages and loans, membership contracts for things like gyms, and contracts with telco providers for things like telephone plans. Generally, for an agreement to constitute a contract it needs to contain a number of elements, including: 1. An offer. There must exist a clear offer from one party to another (for example, a purchaser of a property making an offer to buy real estate from the owner). 2. The other party must accept the offer (for example, the seller of the property accepting the price being offered by the purchaser). 3. Consideration must pass between the offeror and the offeree, i.e. there must be a quid pro quo or a price paid in exchange for whatever is being purchased/promised. 4. There must be a common intention

between the parties that the agreement will be legally binding. 5. The terms and conditions of the contract must be sufficiently certain to make clear each of the parties’ obligations. 6. Each party must have the capacity to enter into the contract. Contracts can be in writing or verbal, or a combination of both. Whilst verbal contracts are perfectly enforceable they are often difficult to prove, as the only way to determine whether the elements of a legitimate contract exist is to engage in a ‘he said/ she said’ between the parties. It is often the case that warring parties have different recollections of the terms of the contract. A verbal contract also leaves each party exposed to manipulation and/or mistruths by the other in the event that there is an allegation of a breach. For this reason, written contracts are always preferred as the terms of the contract are written down and indisputable. There is often dispute about the construction of particular terms of contracts (i.e. what do the terms and conditions actually mean), but if they are written down there can be no doubt that the terms and conditions actually exist and/or that the requisite elements of a contract are present. Sometimes a contract will be partly in writing, like when purchasing a motor vehicle online and a problem arises upon inspection, which results in that contract being amended on the spot. In some cases legislation dictates that certain contracts must be made in writing, for example the sale of land in NSW.

Daisy blossoms at camp How a recent camp inspired a local teenager to pursue a career as a veterinarian EMILY FESZCZUK

E

mu Plains teenager Daisy Wells has been inspired this school holidays at the Future Vet Kids Camp to turn her love for animals into a career. The 14-year-old received the PetSure Scholarship to attend the five- day program and get hands-on experience to start her journey of one day becoming a veterinarian. With a dog named Coco, guinea pig named Sir Lenny Junior, two rabbits and a goldfish, Daisy said her animals made her realise that she would like a job working with them. “Sir Lenny is my favourite but when we got Coco, I realised I wanted to work with animals and how much of an amazing job it would be,” Daisy said. “It was my mum’s idea for me to enrol at the camp as she encourages us all to chase whatever we are into and knowing my love for animals, this was the perfect starting block for the future.” Learning about things like blood work, how to suture and even attending surgery at the clinic in Waverly

where the camp is held, Daisy said attending has affirmed her desire to become a vet. “This awesome camp was so organised and life changing as I have made life-long friends, learned so much and definitely now know that becoming a vet is what I want to do as a career,’’ she said. “From being at the camp I have decided that on top of being a marine biologist, I would love to become a small animal specialist vet and to volunteer with wildlife organisations.” Now having a strong focus on school for her future, Daisy’s mum, Sheridan Spradley, said she is so grateful her daughter got the opportunity to take part. “Daisy has had a lot of sadness in the past few years and has experienced something no child should, being exposed to domestic violence, but she works so hard at school and at everything she puts herself into,” she said. “The benefits are outstanding with this camp, it has inspired Daisy and these beautiful kids to aim so much higher in high school as they have had a little taste of vet life, which is an amazing opportunity.”

Australia Day is notoriously hot, so we are again celebrating where residents can get some reprieve from the hot summer heat, make a splash and enjoy celebrating with their family and friends. Cables Wake Park and Ripples Leisure Centres are some of Penrith’s favourite water sport and aquatic playgrounds. They are the perfect place to escape the hot summer heat and cool down if you do not have access to a pool. Cables will host free wakeboarding and aqua park sessions, while Ripples St Marys and Penrith will open free of charge from 7.30am until 6pm. Make sure you get along to Ripples to enjoy the amazing splash pads and aquatic facilities. Both venues are COVID-Safe and will be actively practicing the guidelines set by the NSW Government on venue capacity, social distancing and any restrictions that have been set at the time. For more information, visit penrith. city/ausday. Australia Day will also be a memora-

ble occasion for 60 residents as they become Australian citizens. Between 60 and 70 people receive their citizenship at each ceremony. That’s more than 800 people every year, representing every continent. No applicant for Australian citizenship is expected to renounce their cultural identity, customs or traditions. But it’s important we all share some common hopes and goals for the future. Some new citizens have been in Australia for as long as 40 or 50 years while others have arrived quite recently. Each and everyone is welcome in Penrith. Our ceremonies may look and feel a little different as we adjust to restrictions imposed on attendee numbers, but the sense of pride that each of our new citizens show cannot be hindered by a global pandemic. I hope you have a wonderful Australia Day and perhaps I’ll see you out and about this Tuesday. Enjoy the day and have fun!

new year, a new business. This new year means saying goodbye to all the negative vibes of 2020 and hello to a year of growth. If there’s one positive that came out of our experience last year, would be the transition of most businesses to digital marketing, albeit forced. As the year begins, it doesn’t mean that we’ll be going back to pre-COVID days, this is our new normal. Although this sounds cliché, last year transformed how people shop for products and services, permanently. It also means that digital marketing will remain the marketing technique that businesses must rely on moving forward. Here are some trends to watch out for in 2021: 1. Non-linear customer journeys will be prevalent. While some businesses are still stuck deciding which platform to use or what channel to market to, people are already shopping online and engaging with businesses via social media. Consumers will rely more on digital platforms to explore brands, buy products and

connect with businesses. 2. Marketing automation will be a must. As businesses use more software, not just for marketing but for other processes as well, the demand for automation tools will increase. These tools can help businesses streamline the marketing processes and improve your campaigns. 3. Mobile search experience will be key to higher SERP rankings. Google has announced that mobile optimisation is a critical ranking signal, but only 25 per cent of businesses are investing in it. As businesses compete for digital space, the page loading time and mobile-friendliness of your website will have a huge impact on your marketing. 4. Shoppable posts will merge social and e-commerce into one. You’ve probably seen Instagram posts that you can click directly to order. Aside from IG, Facebook and Pinterest are following the trend too. From browse to buy, shoppable posts makes it easier/quicker for consumers to shop.

hether it’s a game of cricket, BBQ or day out with the family, we all have our ways of celebrating what makes us Australian on January 26. Whilst this year’s events are slightly more restricted due to COVID- 19, there’s still plenty of things to see and do across Greater Western Sydney that’s bound to get you in the Aussie Day spirit, whilst keeping the whole family entertained. So grab your esky, zinc and a pair of thongs for our top five things to do in western Sydney on Australia Day. Get up close and personal with our native wildlife What better way to celebrate what makes us Australian than to explore our unique and magnificent native creatures. The new Sydney Zoo at Bungarribee is a great day out for families, couples, friends and the like. Here you can see a huge range of our native furry friends like koalas and wallabies or the not so cuddly such as echidnas, spiders and reptiles.

Pack a picnic lunch or enjoy the Tiger Pool Cafe or Lion Deck Cafe. There’s also loads of exotic animals from Africa and Asia to see. If you’re wanting to get a bit more up close and personal, Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park in Doonside specialises in Australian native wildlife and birds.

Sydney Zoo adult tickets are on sale online-only for $39.99 per adult and $19 for children three to 15-years-old. Featherdale is $35 for adults and $22 for children three to 15-years-old. Bask in the Aussie sun and slip down the slides at Raging Waters It’s the closest thing we’ve got to a beach

Cables Wake Park is a great place to celebrate Australia Day.

here out west but a day at Prospect’s Raging Waters is what the summer Aussie spirit is all about. Whether you’re looking to laze by the wave pool and work on your tan or get your blood pumping on one of their 30 rides, slides and attractions, there’s sure to be something for all the family.

AUSTRALIA DAY – SPECIAL COVERAGE

Have a true blue day The essentials you need to make sure you have a terrific Australia Day EMILY FESZCZUK

W

hether you are patriotic or not, Australia Day is the perfect excuse to throw a party for your household (and limited guests) at home or in a local park. Here are our top five things to ensure you have a top day. Dress up and decorate First step of getting into the spirit is looking the part. You can’t go past anything green and gold, some Aussie flag face tattoos to go with your singlet and of course a pair of thongs. Pop down to the two-dollar store to grab some plastic Australian flags and blow up kangaroo to be the mascot for your day! Stay cool Australia Day is regularly a scorcher, so make sure to set up your get together at the beach, river or by the pool. If all else fails, make a home brand slip ‘n’ slide. All you need is a tarp, detergent, a hose and a run-up. Just remember to slip, slop and slap and to stay COVID-safe.

Grab some grub From Vegemite sandwiches, meat pies and sausage rolls to lamingtons and pavlova, a feast on Australia Day is a must. Fire up the barbie and get snags going with fresh white bread and sauce. Don’t forget a selection of ice-cold beers or wine to share! Bring your best No matter the game, Aussies love to win. Get everyone’s competitive spirit involved with a classic game of cricket or a good old drinking contest. If you want to up the stakes, try a thong toss or a lamington eating competition. The winner gets bragging rights for the rest of the day. Belt out a banger It wouldn’t be Australia Day without some true blue music. If Triple J isn’t your thing then pick your own mix for everyone to sing along with. If you are after a Top 50 playlist and don’t want to do the hard work, check out our suggestions on page 25. If you want to create your own, make sure it includes a mix of classics and new hits!

Australia Day is a great time to celebrate with family and friends.

Customer service and quality work a priority at LMAC

Y

ou’ve probably lost count with how many times you’ve switched on your trusty air conditioner this summer for some relief, but have you considered what you would do if something went wrong with it? Lower Mountains Air Conditioning (LMAC) is the local name you can trust when it comes to all things air conditioning related. Whether you are after a brand- new split system or a much-needed service or clean, the friendly and experienced team at LMAC are here to help. In operation since 1988, LMAC was originally owned and founded by John Du Rieu before locals Andrew and Anthea Strathdee – owners of Strathdee Electrical Pty. Ltd. – purchased the business in 2014. Andrew and Anthea live in the local area with their three boys, with Andrew a qualified and experienced Air Conditioning and Electrical Technician. Andrew has had extensive experience in the field installing and servicing domestic, industrial and commercial air conditioning, refrigeration equipment and electrical work. Andrew and Anthea are responsible for the general running of LMAC, including on-site sales and quotations. In addition, they also participate in servicing and

troubleshooting any technical difficulties in most brands. Andrew and Anthea are supported by a reliable, loyal and qualified team of 14, which includes tradesmen, apprentices, trade assistants and very friendly office staff. “We pride ourselves on the quality and efficiency of our work,” Anthea said.

“Customer service is also a huge thing for us and we often receive testimonials from our clients praising our technicians for the work they’ve completed, which is really lovely.” One thing to keep in mind, the recent warm and humid weather over summer has provided the perfect recipe for mould to grow in our air conditioning systems,

with LMAC warning that a good clean or professional service should be on your 2021 to-do list. Lower Mountains Air Conditioning is located at Unit 2, 129 Russell Street, Emu Plains. For more information or to book a service, call 4761 2463 or visit www.lmac. com.au.

Backing Australian manufacturing

W

hen I was elected as your local representative in the Australian Parliament, I committed to working hard to ensure we have more local jobs, so people can live, work and stay in our community. It is something I am passionate about, as someone who commuted out of the area for many years for work. One industry that I completely back to achieve this is Australian manufacturing. To back Australian manufacturing, we must leverage the strengths that give our industry a comparative advantage. We cannot compete with mass producing nations on low value production, and nor should we. The new era of manufacturing will focus on our strengths, where we can compete on quality and value, not just price. Western Sydney can be at the

forefront of this new era of Australian manufacturing. We have the existing network of established manufacturers, and the Morrison Government is making significant investment to support emerging capabilities in advanced manufacturing. As we look to our country’s strengths, backing Australian made is going to be help us create more local jobs and grow our economy. This is why I established the Advancing Manufacturing Taskforce, to bring together our local manufacturers with leading scientists and entrepreneurs, and representatives from schools, TAFE and universities to address the challenges facing local manufacturers and to grab hold of the opportunities. I am particularly focussed on ensuring our local kids are educated and trained in the

jobs of the future that are coming to Western Sydney. From Baker and Provan in St Marys to Grant Engineered in Penrith and PlusTec in Emu Plains, we already have a strong local manufacturing industry. Western Sydney is home to Australia's largest industry concentration of manufacturing, generating excess of $41.5 billion per annum. The manufacturing sector employs more than 114,000 in Western Sydney, and across transport, warehousing and logistics supports an additional 71,000 jobs.

Dedicated team will take care of our beloved furry friends

T

here’s been some exciting news for Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital with the popular facility relocating to bigger premises. In July 2019 the vet was moved from 377 Wentworth Road to 49 Wentworth Road in Orchard Hills and are now just further down the road. With many customers travelling from Emu Plains, Leonay, Emu Heights and the

Lower Blue Mountains with their pets, the new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, three-metre high ceilings and a green, bull-nosed verandah around the front of the building. They even have a concrete driveway and car park. There is an off-leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.

Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 10 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. They started off with four staff and have now grown to 19 staff members and have definitely outgrown their previous premises. This is a wonderful achievement for a successful, local small business. They are so excited and cannot wait for

you to visit their large country practice! The staff look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. For more information, you can find them on Facebook at www.facebook. com/orchardhillsvethospital, visit their website at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call them on 4736 2027. ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Ready to bite into 2021 ome g row n s i n g e r songwriter Amy Shark has announced she will be headlining a national tour, which will kick off in June later this year. The ‘Cry Forever’ tour will accompany her anticipated new album of the same name which is set for release on April 30. While 2020 was a tough year for the entertainment industry, Amy ended the year by winning two ARIA awards and performing at the NRL Grand Final. “The way the year started I was even surprised I managed to have such a strong finish,” Amy told the Weekender. “I had only put one song out and went to the ARIAs just for the free drinks and canapés, so I was shocked to win ‘Best Pop Release’ and ‘Best Australian Live Act’. After the success of her last album ‘Love Monster’, Amy is excited to get back to what she loves doing. “It has been so long since I have played to my actual fan-base in a big room with a full band so, if it all goes ahead, it is going to be pretty special,” she said. “The new album, ‘Cry Forever’, is well and truly done, it’s basically sitting in

Dropbox, so I am excited to get it out there because if I could put it out tomorrow I would.” Planning to play big venues like Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park, the 34-year-old said the music will still be the focus. “Since winning ‘Best Live Act’ people have said I will need to up the ante for the shows, but the songs are super strong and I believe in them, so the production won’t be too crazy, except for some pyrotechnics, which I love,” she said. “It will depend how we go over the next few months and making sure we do shows in the safest way possible, but I have a lot in store for this year if everything works out.” Amy said she has taken more risks as an artist but has stayed true to herself with her track ‘All The Lies About Me’ leading the way. “I have grown so much, become educated about the industry, written about so many more emotions and gone a lot more guitar heavy which has been amazing for this album, but it is still very much my sound and style,” she said. “The single ‘All The Lies About Me’ is a good indication of what is to come with the new album.” Amy Shark’s new record ‘Cry Forever’ is out on April 30. Ê After more than 15 years, the ‘Sex and the City’ TV series is officially back with

JANUARY 25 7.30PM WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE, NINE

9PM

AFTERTASTE, ABC

three of its four principal cast members returning. Titled ‘And Just Like That’, the 10-part series will centre around Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) as they navigate love and friendship in their 50s. Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones, is not returning along with creator Darren Star. The production is being made for HBO Max but will likely screen on Foxtel here.

Ê Hamish Macdonald and Susie Youssef will host the ‘Australian of the Year Awards 2021’ live at Canberra’s National Arboretum this Monday, January 25 at 7.30pm on the ABC. Prime Minister Scott Morrison will present four category awards which include Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year, Australia’s Local Hero and of course

Australian of the Year. The event will also include performances by Christine Anu.

Ê Six-part ABC comedy ‘Aftertaste’, starring Erik Thomson, will premiere on the ABC on Wednesday, February 3 at 9pm. Thomson stars as a celebrity chef who heads home to Adelaide after falling from grace. Ê I watched plenty of shows during the recent summer break, with two in particular already in contention for a coveted Chatter on the Box award later this year. The first is new Stan drama series ‘Your Honor’, which stars the legendary Bryan Cranston of ‘Breaking Bad’ fame. And the other show I’m obsessed with is ‘Karate Kid’ revival ‘Cobra Kai’ on Netflix. I watched all three seasons in less than a week – that’s 30 episodes in five days!

At the movies... An Aussie flick to be proud of THE DRY +++ 1 hour, 57 minutes EMILY FESZCZUK

‘The Dry’ is a strongly written and engrossing home-grown film to be proud of. Federal Agent Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) finds himself back in his hometown in country Victoria to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, who allegedly killed his family before taking his own life. He agrees to investigate the case after he suspects that an unsolved crime, which happened decades earlier, may be connected but ends up having to prove his own innocence. Based on Jane Harper’s bestselling novel, the movie has some differences but is just as successful at gritty

storytelling even though it is a slow burn at the start. Once it warms up, it will have you feeling tense as you try to navigate the twists and turns of this crime thriller with each colourful character adding another possible piece to the puzzle. Director Robert Connolly perfectly captures the sparse and dusty landscapes that hold plenty of secrets from a community close to madness because of relentless drought. While Bana is physically quite different from the lead described in the book, he is a good fit. His engaging performance elevates the story to be a great addition to Australian cinema.

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

If you are responsible and well-informed, then it will pay off down the track. But don’t put your head in the sand and avoid facing problems! The Full Moon urges you to be physically fit, focused and fabulous. It’s also time to reach out to influential friends and positive colleagues who are going places, as you network up a storm. Oprah Winfrey: “Surround yourself with people who are going to lift you higher”.

Tuesday looks rather chaotic, as unpredictable aspects upset your previous plans. So expect the unexpected – especially involving finances and/ or friends. It’s time to banish boredom and extend yourself in challenging new directions. Your mantra for the moment is from birthday great Oprah Winfrey: “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams”.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

With the Full Moon heating up your home zone, tread carefully with a fragile family member. It will be easy to say the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time, so try to be a super tactful! Karma and transformation play an important role in proceedings this week. The more generous you are, the more the Universe will bless you in return. A friend or lover from the past could also re-enter your life.

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

The Full Moon fires up your brain power so it’s a good week to focus your mind, research a subject that has always fascinated you or enrol in a course of study for 2021. Jupiter and Saturn also push you to consider more adventurous options. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great, writer Lewis Carroll: “Sometimes I’ve believed six impossible things before breakfast”.

Thursday night’s Full Moon shines a bright spotlight on self-esteem, finances, core values and trust issues. It’s also time to don your Crab detective cap and turn on your x-ray vision, as you zero in on the cause of a problem and come up with a satisfactory solution. With Venus and Pluto pairing up in your relationship zone, make it a priority to do more for your nearest and dearest.

Lions love to hog the limelight and be the centre of attention – especially when the Full Moon’s in Leo. But this week, the focus shifts from you onto the significant people in your life. Perhaps it’s time for your partner or your best friend to shine? Putting others first puts a spring in your step and a smile on your dial. But be extra clear in the way you communicate on the weekend.

LIBRA

SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER23

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Librans possess a natural talent for procrastination. But this week Venus (your patron planet) pairs up with powerful Pluto, so it’s time to be strategic and focused. If you have a passion that you want to pursue (or a decision that needs to be made) then resist being distracted by other people’s agendas. And make sure deep contemplation is closely followed by decisive action.

Thursday’s Full Moon sees you swing between being sexy and secretive; and being passionate and possessive. You could also be thrust into the public spotlight, so make sure you’re putting on a good show. But are you stuck in a career slump? If you resist changes at work, then you’ll just be left behind in the backwash. Look for creative ways to adopt fresh ideas and pivot in your professional life.

The fiery Full Moon heats up your adventure zone so your hasty Sagittarian side will be switched to full throttle as you power ahead at top speed. But expect a frustrating slowdown on the weekend, when Mercury starts reversing through your communication and travel zone. Don’t worry if your spontaneous approach results in some messy mistakes along the way.

Prepare for a wild week as the Sun sashays through avant-garde Aquarius and squares disruptive Uranus. Plus Mercury slows down, stations and then starts reversing through your sign. So it’s the perfect time to tap into your Gypsy Soul and channel your Inner Bohemian! You’re also impatient to make some snappy decisions but resist the urge to be too blunt.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Your days are often organised with military precision as you try to get everything 100 per cent right. But this week there’s a fiery Full Moon, plus Mercury slows down, stations and then starts moving backwards through your daily routine zone. So strive to be more spontaneous as you toss your usual timetable out the window and stretch your adaptability muscles in unfamiliar directions.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

You’ve got so many serious responsibilities, commitments and must-do-tasks that the last thing you need is a financial drama. But that’s what you could end up with, as the fiery Full Moon and retrograde Mercury shake up your money zones. Saturn (your patron planet) encourages you to be cautious and conservative in the way you spend cash and communicate with other people.

SWIM SAFETY

How getting in the water can be a huge boost to your mental health

I

s improving your health one of your focus areas this year? Some of the best strategies to keep ourselves mentally healthy and psychologically safe are water-based. Let’s start with swimming. As with any exercise, swimming has many benefits, not only for your physical health but also your mental health. In your brain, exercise releases chemicals like endorphins and serotonin, the natural feel-good hormones that lead us to experience a greater sense of happiness and wellbeing, improve mood and stimulate the parts of the brain responsible for memory and learning. It is often documented that exercising regularly can reduce your stress and symptoms of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, and help with recovery from mental health issues. As a form of exercise to reduce stress and anxiety, swimming is hard to beat. The repetitive nature of swimming laps, at your own pace, breathing rhythmically, and in control of your own personal work rate can be very therapeutic, having an almost meditative effect on the mind. The sounds

of the outside world are overwhelmed by the sound of the water splashing around the swimmer’s body in response to their movement through it. Swimmers often report that they can shut out the noise of the world and think clearly whilst swimming laps, and emerge from the water feeling both calm and energised. Even more relaxation can be experienced when the act of swimming is undertaken in a picturesque environment such as the beach, river, lake or swim-

ming hole. Many people say that they feel soothed by the sea, and there is much evidence to suggest that the colour blue, particularly pale blue tones, calm the mind and aid concentration. Regular swimming, even just half an hour at a time, is known to be effective for lowering incidences of depression and anxiety and improve sleep patterns. In research carried out with the participation of 4,000 swimmers across the world, 75 per cent agreed that water-based activities

helped release tension, while 68 per cent of people reported that being in the water made them feel happier in themselves. Studies show that being immersed in water boosts the blood flow to the brain, increasing the supply of oxygen, glucose and nutrients, all of which suggest a positive impact on brain health. For adults living with conditions such as dementia, swimming has been recommended to improve memory, focus and concentration. For people less keen on solitary exercise, the water can provide a perfect environment for social interaction, in aquarobics classes, as a team sport, swimming competitively or as a hobby. Meeting a friend to swim can simply get you out in the world, help to reduce any feelings of loneliness and isolation, and put you in touch with other people. Participating regularly provides structure and focus to your daily or weekly routine. Swim club is a great place to form friendships, and competitive swimming provides mood boosting benefits associated with the shared experience of training and sporting victories.

MONEY MATTERS

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

FUTURE FINANCIAL SERVICES

ALEX MCKENZIE • 4704 8585

Understanding Superannuation and why it’s important for your future to establish an investment strategy suitable for you, there are options suitable for everyone from ultra-conservative to the aggressive risk taking investors, it is important that you are invested appropriately. Eventually your Superannuation becomes your income replacement. Once you no longer work for income, you’ll need to replace this income using your assets, for most this is predominantly your Superannuation. It is important to realise this and start to work towards building enough assets to generate income in retirement. We recommend that you start setting some goals and work towards achieving them, constantly ensuring you are on track. Superannuation is real money, and it is your money that will be extremely important for you later in life, it is definitely in your best interests to start treating your Superannuation like all other assets. This involves tracking your funds, investing in line with your goals, and making sure you are paying reasonable fees and having a clear end goal.

trust Super and don’t want to lose my money” or “you can make more money with property than Super”. Superannuation is not an investment, it is a Tax Structure. In fact, within Superannuation, you can invest in direct property, shares, managed funds, term deposits and even artworks. The government would like people to save for their retirement and as such has created a tax structure which has mandated savings (9.5 per cent of our salary) that are treated differently to all other investments. The money invested in these funds is taxed concessionally upon investing the funds, we only pay 15 per cent on Super contributions instead of our marginal tax rate which can be as high as 46.5 per cent. Furthermore, the return on investment is also only taxed at 15 per cent for income and 10 per cent for capital gains. Again, lower than most of our marginal tax rates. People that are worried about losing their money in Super are most likely invested too aggressively. It is recommended you consult a financial advisor

S

uperannuation is very misunderstood and often neglected part of our wealth, people do not pay much attention to their Superannuation until they approach retirement and don’t view it as part of their overall wealth. A recent study indicated that twothirds of Australians could not accurately state how much money they had in Super, about half did not know the name of all the funds in which they had Super invested and more than half also had money invested in more than one fund without a strategic reason, and only about 10 per cent could give an accurate description of what underlying assets in which they were invested. I believe there are two main reasons for this neglect, firstly as we cannot access these funds, it becomes a low priority and secondly many don’t understand Super and place the whole concept in the too hard basket. The first misconception with Super is that it is a type of investment. I often here people make comments like “I don’t

HEALTHY LIVING

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

ONE POINT HEALTH

KRISTEN HAY WOOD • PODIATRIST

If the shoe fits: The best footwear to ensure your feet remain healthy

W

ith an abundance of shoes to pick from when looking for that new pair of shoes for your wardrobe it can be difficult to know what to look for. We see many patients purchasing shoes they thought were comfortable only to find out they have contributed to their current foot or ankle pain. So here are our main tips for selecting the right shoe for you... A firm heel counter The heel counter acts to stabilise the heel and foot, preventing it from rolling in (pronating) or rolling out (supinating) too much. A shoe’s heel counter should bend down no more than a 45 degree angle. Fastening mechanism Whether it be laces, buckles or a Velcro strap, the choice is all yours. The fastening mechanism helps to hold your foot in the shoe properly, preventing it from slipping forward or out of the shoe. Without something holding the foot in the shoe people tend to scrunch their toes. Over time this can lead to hammered or clawed toes that

can progress to a permanent deformity. Flexibility… in the right place Soles should be flexible, but only at the ball of the foot, not in the middle of the shoe, and also have sufficient cushioning. The sole should not be rigid, but nor should you be able to bend it in half. This is particularly important for those who have flat feet. Material A good quality shoe is made from a strong rubber sole, good cushioning for comfort, and leather upper for support and longevity. Leather is a breathable and water- resistant material, which is important for active, sweaty feet. If feet cannot breathe, there is an increased risk of conditions such as fungal infections – not to mention smelly feet. Sizing The golden rule is to have one thumb width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. It is worth noting that for some people their longest toe isn’t always

the big toe! It is also important to ensure the shoe is wide enough for you to prevent painful corns from the shoe compressing

the toes too much, which is particularly common in women’s shoes or men’s business shoes.

Keep your cat happy and healthy with an annual health check up

H

ave you remembered to schedule an appointment for your feline friend too? Our cats also require annual health checks and vaccinations. Vaccinating your cat stimulates its immune system to produce antibodies against the virus, preventing it from causing disease. There are three major cat diseases caused by viruses that are highly infectious and cause serious illness, even death. Feline Infectious Enteritis (Feline Panleucopenia) is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease – very few cats survive or recover from an attack. Cats of all ages can be affected but kittens and young cats are especially at risk. The virus causes enteritis (inflammation of the intestinal tract) and onset of signs can be very sudden. Symptoms may include high temperature, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, loss of appetite and weight loss, sudden death in kittens and problems with unborn kittens in pregnant cats. Even with intensive care, few cats survive and some that do survive may become ‘carriers’ of the virus, shedding it into the environment to infect

other cats. Cats can pick up the virus from infected cats and anything contaminated with their droppings, including bedding, feed bowls, clothing and hands of owners.

Feline Respiratory Disease is often called cat flu. It is caused by one or more viruses including Feline Herpes Virus 1 (FHV1) and Feline Calicivirus (FVC). These virus-

es produce symptoms similar to the common cold in humans. Symptoms include sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nose, fever, breathing problems, coughing, fatigue and loss of appetite. Cats can also develop ulcers on the mouth or eyes. If the condition becomes severe and is not treated, it can cause permanent eye damage, pneumonia or even death. Feline Leukemia Virus is a virus spread between cats by fighting or by grooming each other. It causes an immunodeficiency syndrome like Feline AIDS, and predisposes the cat to other illnesses and cancer. Other diseases that we can vaccinate our cats against includes Feline Chlamydia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Vaccination to prevent these diseases is crucial to your cat’s health, but will not prevent disease in cats already infected. It is important to remember that if your cat’s vaccinations are overdue, it will need to be vaccinated at least two weeks before boarding in a cattery. Werrington Downs resident and GWS fan Megan Chase is one of the stars of the ‘Big Big Decade’ campaign.

Megan’s a Big Big fan T

he GWS Giants have called on one of their most passionate supporters to star in their new marketing campaign, which celebrates the club’s ‘Big Big Decade’ in the game. Werrington Downs resident Megan Chase has been supporting the Giants since day one – from the team’s 162- point flogging in their first season right through to their historic Grand Final appearance back in 2019. With 2021 being GWS’ 10th year in the AFL, the club believes now is the perfect opportunity to reflect on how far they’ve

come and to celebrate what has been achieved so far. The new ‘Big Big Decade’ campaign has kicked off with members, staff, partners, players and board members coming together to reflect on their #BigBigMoment from their first season as part of the Giants family The #BigBigMoment campaign was filmed in a lounge room setting across three key locations at Giants Stadium, Blacktown International Sports Park and Manuka Oval in Canberra. Speaking with the Weekender, Chase said she was excited to be part of the ‘Big Big Decade’ campaign because she has the club’s Orange and Charcoal colours

running through her veins. “Myself and my family are very avid supporters of the GWS Giants, which is funny because my family used to support rugby league and I loved ice hockey,” she said. “Back in 2012, my sister was pregnant and I started taking my niece to Giants games for something to do – and we loved it. “It’s been really fun watching the players grow from boys to men – not just on the field but off it as well… that’s why I love this club so much.” The ‘Big Big Decade’ celebrations will see the Giants host an array of events, launch dedicated web content to reflect

the milestone and introduce a bespoke merchandise range. Giants members and fans are also encouraged to share their #BigBigMoment from the last decade using the hashtag on social media or via the club’s website. Chase said she has a number of favourite Giants moments from over the years, but one in particular stands out above the rest. “I’m not going to lie… I like a bit of violence with my football and when Shane Mumford tackled and almost ‘killed’ that player down in Canberra – that was amazing! That hit put a fire in my belly,” she said.

NETBALL

Become a referee Story continued from » p. 56 “Our goal in 2021 is to double what we had in 2020, so we are looking for around 30 new referees to join us this season.” According to the association, new recruits would receive all the necessary training before beginning their refereeing journey in the U8 and U9 divisions. All referees are paid per game and will be assigned games convenient to their location. Haines said refereeing is a “great alternative” to playing rugby league and is a top way to get fit, earn money and learn on the job. “We’ve recruited so many referees over the years that had played rugby league and then decided to stop. Even referees who have gone to the top level in the NRL, like Grant Atkins, played the game for a few years before picking up a whistle,” he said. “Refereeing is great fun, we look after our members and provide them with an opportunity to enjoy themselves and achieve whatever level they desire. “If they want to officiate in the NRL one day, we’ll do everything we can to help make that happen.” For more information and to give refereeing a go, visit penrithreferees. com.au/become-a-referee-in-2021 or email eo@penrithreferees.com. au.

A star of the future

Oxley Park resident wins monthly Senior Sports Star Award NATHAN TAYLOR

T

he new year has kicked off in the best possible way for Eleanor Alatini, with the local netballer named the latest recipient of Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Senior Sports Star Award. The Oxley Park resident, who turns 18 today, has been a Penrith District Netball Association junior representative player for the past seven years. Last year, Alatini played in the top Netball NSW Metro League team, representing Penrith Netball in the competition. The team, led by Alatini, enjoyed an outstanding season on the court, going through the entire season undefeated before losing the Final game by a single goal on the buzzer. As a first year player in Metro League, Alatini was named the Penrith Rookie of the Year for that competition. 2020 also saw Alatini selected as a training partner for the Panthers Netball NSW Premier League team,

playing numerous games in that competition. But perhaps the Western Sydney Academy of Sport graduate’s biggest achievement to date came last month when she was chosen in the 2021 Netball NSW Emerging Talent Squad for 16-19 year-old athletes. The Netball NSW Emerging Talent Squad will contest the inaugural intrastate competition at the Australian Institute of Sport in mid-July. While 2020 was a huge year for this incredible player, 2021 could be even bigger as she sets her sights on cementing herself as one of the best young netballers in the state. Nominated by Penrith District Netball Association President Joy Gillett, Eleanor Alatini’s Senior Sports Star Award is all thanks to sponsor Panthers World of Entertainment. If you or someone you know has achieved in their chosen sport, send in your nomination to Penrith Valley Sports Foundation. There are numerous categories to be nominated in. Nomination forms are available at www.pvsf.org.au.

CRICKET: Penrith have notched up their first win of 2021, defeating Parramatta in Round 10 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a One-Day match at Howell Oval, Parramatta won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors got off to a terrible start with the bat (2/7) before recovering. In the end, they were dismissed for 187 with just four overs remaining. Ryan Fletcher was the best with the ball taking 3/31. When Penrith hit the crease later that day, they took care of business with ease, losing just three wickets on their way to victory. Penrith young gun Tyran Liddiard scored his second century of the season, clocking 118 not-out. Penrith will aim for back to back wins when they face Gordon in a Two-Day match this weekend at Chatswood Oval.

The local association, which has produced current NRL officials Grant Atkins and Ricky McFarlane, is challenging males and females aged 13 and above to put their hand up to make the call and join their growing team. Penrith Referees Chairman Gary Haines said

the association is pushing hard for new members more than ever. “It was extremely difficult last year, we were only able to recruit 15 referees before they put a halt to face to face contact,” he said. “This year we wanted to do something different and that’s why we’ve come up with this new campaign.” Story continues on » p. 54
