Independent panel set to determine if $16 million Log Cabin proposal goes ahead ALENA HIGGINS he independent panel who will determine the Log Cabin Development Application (DA) has met to discuss the proposal, with an answer due in the next day or two. Four community members spoke during the virtual meeting on Wednesday, raising several issues of concern which they believe have not been adequately addressed. The entry and exit points of the proposed 200-space car park was a key matter raised, amid potential traffic and pedestrian conflicts along Memorial Avenue. Penrith Council has recommended that the $16 million development be approved, however with adjusted hours that would see the pub only open to midnight on Thursday to Saturday, not 2am as the applicant has proposed. The Local Penrith Planning Panel (Panel) will have the final say. Owner Craig Laundy did not support a trial period, saying he bought the land in good faith and the DA seeks to replicate the hours of operation that were previously there, adding any changes would be “grossly unfair”. The meeting also heard the applicant

The applicant said the building has been designed with residents in mind and a comprehensive management plan had been developed to address noise and

security concerns that are likely to come from nearby residents. A courtesy bus would also be on call during the hours of operation, the meeting heard. A Panel member urged the applicant to get the shading of the beer garden and playground right, saying if it wasn’t, it would not be used for four months of the year. The two-storey building will feature dining areas overlooking the Nepean River, a main ‘vista’ deck, as well as an expansive beer garden and children’s playground, with fine dining and function areas upstairs. The DA for the new hotel was submitted by FDC Construction, the company behind the Marsden Brewhouse in Marsden Park, The Locker Room Hotel in Sydney Olympic Park and a large business estate at Erskine Park. The developers exchanged contracts on the site in late 2019 with the previous owner and long-time publican, Ross Sinclair. The original, much-loved hotel was completely destroyed by fire in March 2012, with locals long-wanting to see its return. The site had been occupied by a hotel since the early 1800s.

ou can rest assured that the 6pm evening news bulletins on Tuesday will lead with images of emotional reunions between people torn apart by the Queensland / New South Wales border closure. The stories will be largely positive, and rightly so, but we should not forget the madness that took us to this point. Initially I was happy enough with States closing their borders, perhaps foolishly thinking that National Cabinet, combined with common sense, would implement guidelines that ensured no wall remained up a second longer than it needed to. In fact I wrote an entire column back in August supporting the States determining their own way out of the crisis. But what we’ve seen from the Queensland, South Australian and Western Australian State Governments in particular over the last few months is proof that they should not be in charge of the keys. The game playing and arse-covering has been nothing short of embarrassing. QLD Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk stood up at a media conference on Tuesday playing the hero – announcing with glee that the border closure with New South Wales would end on December 1, a border that most agree should have been open long ago. But Palaszczuk got her wish – she was re-elected in the midst of the closure, selling the line to Queenslanders that she kept them safe from those virus-riddled cockroaches south of the border. Of course to help that election cause she made exemptions for hundreds of AFL officials and their wives to travel from Victoria, as the second COVID-19 wave

Y

Index

was in full swing, into Queensland so she could beat her chest about securing the Grand Final for her State, another vote winner. The Premier says it’s all about health advice from her Chief Medical Officer Jeannette Young, of course. The same doctor who admitted that money was the driving factor behind letting Hollywood A-Listers into the State at a time when many were refused exceptions to see their dying parents. Sorry, but I can’t cop the Palaszczuk smile and the “come to Queensland” BS we got served up on Tuesday. Nor can I cop South Australian Premier Steven Marshall still trying to sell the line that he did the right thing by plunging his State into lockdown last week on the back of an almost fanciful story by one individual. Again, he’s arse-covering, standing up at daily press conferences trying to convince South Australians that with his so-called “circuit breaker”, a catastrophe was potentially avoided.

“There is a line between keeping residents of your State safe and being downright cruel”

If you hold a daily press conference, it must be serious. Please, pull the other one. The fact that a Premier was willing to shut down the entire State and just 48 hours later learned it was based on a lie and totally unnecessary shows you the knee-jerk, make-it-up-as-you-go-along attitude some of these Premiers have. Meanwhile, Western Australia is living on its own planet, keeping families apart despite the extremely low case numbers across the rest of the country. Premier Mark McGowan is escaping some of the criticism levelled at other Premiers because, let’s face it, not many of us want to go to Perth. But his motivations too need to be questioned, given there seems no logical reason to remain so defiant on the border closure. Of course there will be times when borders need to be closed, and the Victorian outbreak was a clear example of that. But the number one goal should then be opening it as quick as possible, and that just hasn’t happened, except in New South Wales where Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s policy of keeping borders mainly open has proven a winner. It’s become clear that we can’t have State Premiers closing borders willy-nilly. The National Cabinet should have resolved this, but it appears to have fallen over after initially showing signs of strong promise. It’s all talk and no action, not when the power-hungry Premiers have the keys. There is a line between keeping residents of your State safe and being downright cruel. That line has been crossed more times than it should have been in 2020 and we can’t let it continue to happen.

New campaign encourages us to shop locally as part of COVID-19 recovery enrith City Council is proud as punch to launch a new campaign to back the city’s nearly 15,000 businesses. Penrith Proud encourages residents to spend their money locally and for businesses to look at local suppliers where possible. The initiative, which is a part of Council’s COVID-19 Recovery Taskforce, is supported by Penrith CBD Corporation, Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce and St Marys Town Centre Management. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said she was thrilled to launch the campaign that is all about community spirit. “96 per cent of our businesses are small businesses which are the lifeblood of our community and we want businesses to stay viable to protect local jobs,” Cr McKeown said. “We have worked to create a business directory that businesses can join for free, which will guide the community when they are supporting local.” Penrith Economic Recovery Taskforce member and Quest Penrith franchisee Phil Willey said they always try to support other local services.

P

“We have customers from interstate and within NSW who we always encourage to shop local, eat at restaurants in the area or visit tourist sites like iFLY or the whitewater rafting,” he said. “From a business point of view, we use local tradesmen where we can for jobs because this is what will get us through this period, so we are delighted to be involved.” Cr McKeown said being a part of Penrith Proud and supporting it is beneficial for the whole area. “It is in the best interest for businesses to get behind the campaign as it will support them economically and residents don’t have to travel as we have everything here,” she said. “It is great for jobs, great for the economy and will keep the town ticking over as every dollar spent locally today is a dollar that will protect our future.” She said people often unnecessarily shop outside of the area. “You’d be surprised by how many of the things we need are available locally – either made in the area or supplied and sold by businesses that employ local residents and your support can give a moral and financial boost at the time they need it most,” she said. With the first 200 businesses to sign up

Post office under pressure Posties in desperate rush to get parcels and cards delivered before Christmas Day EMILY FESZCZUK ith less than a month to Christmas, Australia Post is getting ready for its busiest festive period ever. With posties and Post Office staff working harder than ever, they are urging people to get in early to ensure parcels arrive on time. NSW/ACT Post Office Network General Manager, Christine Walker, said it is important for Australia Post to help connect loved ones through mail. “2020 has been a challenging year and we’re ready to help Australia ‘Spread the Merry’ and re-connect with each other, just as we’ve been doing for over 210 years,” she said. “Thoughtfulness through the Christmas season with simple gestures like a card, or a small gift can mean so much.” With teams trying to deliver cards and parcels as quickly and safely as possible, Ms Walker said they are asking customers to help them by getting organised early. “Customers can help us by getting parcels into the post a little bit earlier this year with our final posting dates for delivery by Christmas being December

W

12 for Parcel Post and December 19 for Express,” she said. “It’s important to say that parcels sent after these dates will still be delivered as quickly as possible, it will just be difficult to get them to their destinations before Christmas.” To help locals in the lead up to the big day, Ms Walker said they are offering extended retail hours at Kingswood, St Marys and Colyton Post Offices. “Our teams are working extremely hard to deliver a great Christmas and are operating with extended hours to serve more customers,” she said. “We have over 190 Post Offices in New South Wales extending their retail hours this Christmas with the majority commencing from Saturday, November 28 until Wednesday, December 23.” If you are still on the hunt for that perfect present, Ms Walker said Australia Post has you covered as well. “We have a great range of gifts available instore which include everything from mobile phones, to air fryers, televisions and other electronics,” she said. “There is also a great range of smaller items and gift cards too, so I encourage everyone to head into their local Post Office and see what’s available.” Visit auspost.com.au/Christmas.

Cannabis plants discovered in raid of Penrith property

TROY DODDS annabis plants worth more than $600,000 have been discovered at a home in Penrith, which was raided by police earlier this week. Officers discovered the hydroponic cannabis set-up and multiple personal identification documents when executing a crime scene warrant at a home on Sunshine Avenue on Monday night. During the search of the home, police seized 122 cannabis plants, with an estimated potential street value of $610,000. Officers also seized equipment consistent with the cultivation and supply of cannabis.

A 40-year-old man allegedly attempted to run from police when they entered the home, but he was arrested. The man was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with ‘cultivate prohibited plant (commercial quantity)’, ‘use/consume/waste etc electricity without authority’ and ‘possess identity info to commit indictable offence’. In a search of a blue Toyota Camry at the property, investigators located and seized a folder containing a large quantity of personal identification documents, including NSW and interstate drivers’ licences. ‘Medi-hotel’ to be built near Nepean Hospital will boast new bar and restaurant ALENA HIGGINS $31 million ‘medi-hotel’ boasting a rooftop bar and restaurant has been proposed for the Kingswood health precinct. Slated for the corner of Somerset and Hargrave Streets opposite the Nepean Hospital multi-storey car park, the sevenstorey structure will feature 140 rooms and cater to regular guests as well as pre and post-operative patients and their families. According to the Development Application (DA) lodged by investment group Boston Global, the hotel has been custom designed with location in mind. “The inclusion of the top floor wellness spaces alongside food and beverage space are not part of the standard hotel model, and are proposed due to the unique location of the development adjacent to the Nepean Hospital precinct,” a document attached to the DA states. “More specifically, the inclusion of the top floor and the facilities it provides has been in direct response to the expressed wants and needs of the Nepean Hospital.” Only 46 underground car spaces are proposed, a parking rate less than the rate prescribed for hotel and motel accom-

However, the DA justifies this noncompliance by differentiating itself from a normal tourist hotel where guests would usually drive. In a letter of support, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chief Executive Kay Hyman said they were “genuinely excited” about the “much needed” high quality facility, and offered potential car parking access. “The services and facilities proposed by

Boston Global in this location will support the Nepean health precinct and enhance the total care experience for patients, their families, friends, carers and medical staff,” she wrote. “In terms of car parking, we are willing to discuss potential arrangements with Boston Global and the medi-hotel operator to provide access to our car parking facilities, which are close to the subject site, if required.” Negotiations with an internationally

renowned hotel operator to manage the hotel are also currently being finalised. It is understood Penrith Council generally supports the proposed development subject to resolving some minor issues with the building form and the car parking. In 2016, a different applicant was granted approval to construct a six-storey mixeduse building on the subject site, which included 52 apartments, commercial space and parking for 74 cars.

From Penrith to the world rent Grundy’s idea to create a trampoline play centre in Penrith eight years ago turned out to be a flippin’ success. The Flip Out brand has grown worldwide with its 100th store being opened this week in Mexico, and the owner has exciting plans for a new concept. The Penrith local told the Weekender that a chance situation at a children’s birthday party led him to the idea. “I saw a little girl who couldn’t play on the equipment with her friends because she was too tall and I thought if you put trampolines together with no height restrictions it could be fun for everyone, Mr Grundy said. “From that I started in Penrith at the end of 2012 in the Panthers car park in sunshine and rain with no money, but it all grew from there. Moving to a permanent location on Mulgoa Road and then Batt Street where the centre now sits, Mr Grundy said it really took off when he expanded overseas. “Our first international site was Taiwan then we hit the UK, Saudi, Egypt, Dubai, Kuwait, all through Asia, Malaysia, China,

B

Thailand, South Africa, New Zealand and Europe like Poland and Germany,â€? he said. “A lot of them are now franchises but it has been a cool journey to see an idea spread to over 15 countries and to celebrate our 100th location in Mexico.â€? Inspired by his travel overseas, Mr Grundy said he has plans for a new centre that will entertain both children and parents. “I am looking to buy back the Penrith Flip Out so I can refurbish it and make it flash for the community where it all started, then directly next door we want to open something new,â€? he said. “If approved, it will be a sister brand called Yo Loco that is a Mexican themed play centre that will have great quality food and drinks where kids and their parents can spend hours. People will see some cool Mexican masks and wrestling, piĂąatas, Day of the Dead decorations, delicious food and great equipment.â€?

Statistics suggest locals aren’t telling the police about thefts and break-ins EMILY FESZCZUK spate of break-ins and thefts in the Penrith area has police reminding residents to lock up safely. Online community groups have seen an increase of residents posting about these incidents, but reporting statistics tell a different story. Penrith City Council Deputy Mayor and retired Police Chief Inspector, Tricia Hitchen, said she was shocked when she contacted Nepean Police Area Command. “We all see the Facebook posts every day, talking about thefts from cars and houses, which shows an increase in the crime rate, but people are not reporting it,” she said. “For example, from January 1 to now there has only been 10 break and enters and 17 steal from motor vehicles reported in Caddens, making it one of the safest suburbs in the area.” But Caddens community groups tell a vastly different story, with constant reports of crime in the suburb. “Police use statistics to work out high crime areas, which they will then focus on, so while people think reporting won’t achieve anything the cumulative effect will make a big difference,” Cr Hitchen said.

“If you have camera footage it is easy to submit it online to the NSW Police Force Community Portal, you can call 131 444 or call Nepean Command on 4721 9413.” The Weekender contacted several residents to comment, who declined, with a majority stating they had not reported their break-ins. Despite the lack of reporting, Nepean Police Area Command Detective Inspector Jason Pietruszka said police are aware and are responding to several incidents. “We are also seeing unit storage cages that are being accessed at night and these matters are under investigation with various avenues of enquiry being looked into,” he said. “Police patrols in identified areas have been increased and these matters are being prioritised by Nepean Police to ensure all matters are investigated thoroughly for prompt response.” Detective Inspector Pietruszka stressed the importance of being vigilant before and after these offences occur. “We implore people to lock their homes and cars at night when unattended and don’t leave any valuables in the vehicle,” he said. “If you are a victim, report it to police or, if you see persons acting suspiciously in the area, report it as well.”

A new Plus Fitness gym has also opened at the centre. Gym owners Chris Dawson

and Marty Whittaker said they’re excited to open their venture at Caddens Corner. “There are really great features, like the street signs each business has, the overhead structure with the fans and Table Lane looks amazing,” Mr Dawson said. “We’re really happy with our position too, we’ve got three walls of glass which is great for a gym.”

Most stores have now opened, though some, mainly additional food options, will open through December and January once final fit-outs are complete. Caddens Corner will support over 400 new full-time or equivalent jobs, with around 120 jobs coming from Woolworths alone. During construction, the shopping centre created 160 jobs.

Farm Road receives crucial re-surfacing M

over the past few years as motorists look for alternatives to move about,” she said. “It’s important to recognise that this particular road was never meant to be the main thoroughfare for traffic, instead its purpose is to service local residents who live in the Mulgoa area.” With the Commonwealth Government delivering over $1.2 million to upgrade The Northern Road, Ms McIntosh said better, and safer roads are a part of her plan. “The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grants program has already seen more than 1,800 projects approved for funding across Australia. In the Budget, we extended this program by $1 billion so we can continue to build the roads and infrastructure our communities need, support small businesses and create thousands of local jobs,” she said.

otorists using Farm Road at Mulgoa will have a smoother ride after it was re-surfaced as part of a Commonwealth local roads grants program. The $200,000 project re-surfaced approximately 1.2 kilometres of the road that was suffering from disrepair as a result of increased usage of diverted traffic from the roadworks on The Northern Road. Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh (pictured with Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown) said doing upgrades with funding from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grants program is important and increases safety for the community. “For many people in Mulgoa, this road is an important part of their daily commute to work and school, and back home again,” she said. “These important road upgrades in our community mean you’ll spend less time in traffic and more time at home with your family.” With the works being conducted by Penrith City Council, Mayor Karen McKeown thanked the Federal Government for its support. “Penrith City Council is grateful for the funding from the Federal Government to repair Farm Road as traffic has increased significantly

L AW a n d O R D E R From The Courts: Your Complete Legal Wrap COMPILED BY ALENA HIGGINS. OUR COURT REPORTING IS SPONSORED BY LOCAL LAW FIRM COMPLETE LEGAL & CONVEYANCING.

Man given “credit” despite choking partner in car park

A man who choked his partner in a Penrith car park while subject to an AVO not to approach her has been jailed for a minimum of four months. Witnesses were forced to intervene when the man grabbed the woman around the throat in the Autobarn car park on November 18, before he fled the scene on foot. When he faced Penrith Local Court last Friday, his lawyer conceded the threshold for a jail sentence had been crossed and there was no alternative to full-time imprisonment. The court heard the man had been jailed for domestic violence in the past and was out on strict bail for drug offences and breaching AVOs at the time. According to agreed facts read out in court, the man was seen with both hands around the victim’s neck for about 10 seconds, during which time she was unable to breath. He finally let go when a passerby yelled at him to get off her. The court heard the man once had a $150-a-day ‘ice’ habit, but had recently obtained work and had reduced his drug intake. His lawyer requested Magistrate Brian van Zuylen find special circumstances allowing him a longer period on parole to address his issues. Magistrate van Zuylen said the court would give him a “great deal of credit” for pleading guilty straight away. He was jailed for eight months with a four-month non-parole period, making him eligible for release on March 18, 2021.

Man on drugs goes on bizarre rampage cross suburbs

18

WW39709

A Penrith driver high on drugs who wreaked havoc when he smashed into four cars in the space of an hour has been slapped with multiple good behaviour bonds and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service work.

Zack Kenney, 22, faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with a slew of offences, including ‘driving under the influence’, ‘drive manner dangerous’, ‘negligent driving’, multiple counts of ‘assault and resist police’ as well as ‘not give particulars’. The court heard Kenney had smoked cannabis the night before and was also under the influence of Xanax when he was involved in the collisions on Saturday, May 16. The accident spree began when he collided with a car as he was travelling south on The Northern Road about 9.20am. Police attended a short time later and he was subjected to a breath test, which returned a negative result. But despite appearing confused and dazed, Kenney was allowed to get back behind the wheel after he exchanged particulars, with the crash being determined as only minor in nature. 20 minutes later Kenney struck again, this time running up the back of a Toyota Hilux at speed as it waited to turn right onto Glenmore Parkway, Glenmore Park. The other driver followed Kenney for about one kilometre hoping to exchange details, and watched Kenney’s white Ford Ranger mount the kerb multiple times. Now, deep in suburbia, Kenney rearended another car on Kenneth Slessor Drive, Glenmore Park and failed to stop, before he was witnessed swerving across the road with his hazard lights on. By 10.20am, Kenney was on Castlereagh Road, Cranebrook where he collided with a Holden Captiva as he entered the Andrews Road roundabout. Police attended and he was subjected to a breath test, but critically, this time also a sobriety assessment, which yielded alarming results. A search of his car also uncovered various items of drug paraphernalia, with Kenney admitting he smokes cannabis daily, “believing it’s a herb, not a prohibited drug”, agreed facts state. When police attempted to arrest him he

became aggressive, swinging and spitting at officers. Last Thursday, his lawyer said Kenney took full responsibility for his actions and was “certainly remorseful”. Magistrate Brian van Zuylen told Kenney his behaviour was “disgusting and appalling”. “The court is seriously considering a full-time jail sentence for you,” he said. “You’re fortunate you didn’t cause more damage.” He took into account Kenney’s lack of criminal convictions before handing him multiple 18-month Community Correction Orders. He was also fined $350 for negligent driving, $500 each for not give particulars and barred from driving for 18 months. He must also abstain from drugs for the term of his bonds.

Man “ashamed” after being caught damaging property

A Glenmore Park graffiti fiend has been ordered to perform 150 hours of community service work after causing almost $10,000 worth of damage. Ryan Schotanus, 29, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday and pleaded guilty to ‘intentionally marking premises’ and ‘running on train lines’. His lawyer said he was “embarrassed and ashamed” of his actions and had the money put aside to pay for compensation. Magistrate Brian van Zuylen asked the electrician how he would feel if someone marked his premises. “You should treat public property like you would want them to treat your personal property – respectfully and without damage,” he said. He was also critical of the danger he put himself and others in. “You should realise the risk you run,” he said. “Do you really want to get hit by a train and leave your son without a father?” He was convicted, handed two-year

Community Correction Orders and directed to pay $9,869.12 in compensation.

No jail for man after guilty plea to drug supply charges

John Paul Donoghoe has been hit with a good behaviour bond and hefty fine after pleading guilty to drug supply. Donoghoe faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday and pleaded guilty to ‘supply prohibited drug’ after he was found with 9.44g of methamphetamine at Cranebrook. His lawyer said Donoghoe denied any participation in supply, but accepted the substantial quantity of the drug gave rise to a supply rather than possession charge. However, Magistrate Brian van Zuylen noted Donoghoe’s phone was seized and police found several texts requesting “8-balls” – a common drug term. He took into account Donoghoe’s successful participation in the Magistrates Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) program before handing down his decision. He was convicted, fined $1,500 and handed a two-year Community Correction Order with supervision.

Grandmother banned from driving after drug incident

Sharon Ann Spencer has been stripped of her licence for three months after pleading guilty to driving with illicit substances in her blood. The 50-year-old’s lawyer told Penrith Local Court last Friday there was no evidence she was affected by the drugs when she was caught in June and August this year. The lawyer said she had a great need for her licence and helped ferry her 14 grandchildren around. However, Magistrate Fiona Toose said it was a matter of public safety. She was convicted, banned from driving for three months, fined $250 for using her mobile phone and $500 for possessing a small amount of cannabis.

St Clair: Man charged after altercation results in stabbing

A man has been charged after he allegedly stabbed another man in a brawl at a St Clair car park this week. About 2.50pm on Monday, two men, aged 35 and 41, were waiting at the St Clair Shopping Centre car park for their children to finish school. A verbal altercation erupted between the men that quickly escalated to a physical confrontation. “It’s alleged the 41-year-old has produced a knife and stabbed the younger man a number of times in the back and arm,” a police spokesperson said. “A large crowd has gathered at the scene and the older man left the area. The injured man attended Nepean Hospital for treatment to three stab wounds. His injuries are not considered life threatening. “The older man presented to Blacktown Hospital for injuries to his face. Detectives from Nepean Police Area Command attended the hospital where they placed the 41-year-old under arrest. “After being discharged he was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘malicious wounding cause grievous bodily harm’, and ‘affray.’” He was refused bail and to appear in Blacktown Local Court. As inquiries into the incident continue, detectives are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have vision, to contact detectives at Nepean Police Area Command, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Kingswood: Man carrying drugs busted by police

About 11.00pm on Friday, November 20 police were patrolling Orth Street, Kingswood. Officers have stopped a 22-year-old Kingswood man and had a conversation with him. It is alleged the man has admitted that he was carrying prohibited drugs. The

man was searched, and it is alleged located in a man bag he was carrying was a large clear resealable bag containing cannabis. Within the large clear resealable bag was a further smaller clear resealable bag containing cocaine. The man was arrested and charged.

Oxley Park: Man assaults police during dramatic arrest

About 5.30am on Sunday, November 22 police have attended a residence in Canberra Street, Oxley Park in relation to a domestic incident. Police have attempted to arrest the 20-year-old male occupant. It is alleged that he was well affected by alcohol and as police were walking down the stairs, the man has pushed an officer to the back, causing him to trip and fall down a number of stairs. Police then attempted to restrain him, and it is alleged he has violently resisted and pulled away. The man was eventually restrained on the ground, where he continued to thrash his body about. Eventually he was handcuffed and complied. The man was charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV)’, ‘Destroy or damage property’, ‘assault officer in execution of duty’ and ‘resist officer in execution of duty’.

St Marys: Man charged after failing breath test

About 2.20am on Sunday, November 22, Police were patrolling Queen Street, St Marys. Police have stopped a vehicle for a random breath test. Police have had a conversation with the driver, a 37-yearold St Marys man. The man was subject to a breath test, which proved positive. The man was taken to Penrith Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.144. The man was charged with ‘Drive with middle range PCA’. He will appear in Penrith Local Court on December 15.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison made waves on radio in September when he suggested that a COVID-19 vaccine would be “as mandatory as you can possibly make it”, before later clarifying that there would be exemptions in relation to any COVID-19 vaccine on medical and other grounds. From a legal perspective, there are differing views on whether or not the Commonwealth has the power to impose a mandatory vaccine. Australia has not been in a position in its modern history whereby a pandemic the likes of COVID-19 has required such a significant intervention on the rights of individuals by the government. Why anyone would not want to vaccinate themselves against a virus that has killed millions and torn apart the global economy is anyone’s guess, however it is a complex area of law that intersects the need for the government to make decisions in the interests of public health and a person’s right to bodily autonomy. The issue of whether or not the Commonwealth can enforce a mandatory vaccine is made more difficult by the fact that public health, in Australia, is generally the responsibility of States and Territories. There does not appear to be any Commonwealth legislation currently in place that would specifically enable the Federal Government to enforce a population wide vaccine, however it appears that the States and Territories may have

said powers pursuant to their varying emergency public health laws. Western Australia’s public health legislation imposes power on authorised health officials to direct a person to be vaccinated during a public health state of emergency. Victoria’s corresponding legislation provides that the Chief Medical Officer can issue a public health order requiring persons to receive a specified vaccination in a public health emergency. New South Wales and Queensland also appear to have similar powers in their respective pieces of public health legislation. Public health legislation is what has been relied upon by each State and Territory in the nation to impose many of the restrictions that have seen the near elimination of the COVID-19 virus in Australia. A further issue for governments is how a mandatory vaccination program would play out in the Courts if challenged. An added complication for jurisdictions like Victoria, Queensland and the ACT is that each has a Charter of Human Rights, which may be incompatible with a mandatory vaccination program and give rise to challenges at law on the basis that a mandatory vaccine would constitute a breach of human rights. What is clear is that articles posted online by conspiracy theorists about vaccines causing all manner of other illnesses are entirely unhelpful in the face of a pandemic that has killed millions and ravaged entire economies. Australia’s medical regulations are sufficiently robust to ensure that any vaccine will be safe and effective for the vast majority of recipients.

Real trees in hot demand Drought conditions and pandemic mean only a small number of trees are on sale EMILY FESZCZUK fter a tough year, people are looking forward to decorating their Christmas trees to get into the festive spirit. For locals who love a fresh tree, they will have to get in early with limited numbers being sold around Penrith due to the on-and-off drought conditions. Mark Ford, owner of Glenmore Christmas Tree Farm in Mulgoa, said this year’s season will look very different. “We will be open the weekend of December 5 and 6 from 9am to 5pm and we think we will sell out so families will need to get in early to get what they can,” he said. “We will not be offering pre-sales or pretagging of trees, all sizes will be $80 and due to COVID we will require payment in exact cash, so please be prepared.” Mr Ford said next year’s plans for the farm are still undecided. “We are, I believe, one of the last remaining farms in the area, but our trees were so drought affected we only have a few hundred ready for sale this year,” he said. “We are not sure yet if we will open next year but we will hang in there until we can get back to normal production with more trees available.”

A

The Lions Club of Emu Plains will also be selling real trees, fresh cut and sourced from Oberon on Saturday, December 5 at Lions Park in Emu Plains. Emu Plains Lions Coordinator, John Choma, said the price will be $40 with limited stock. “The estimated drop-off time for the trees is around 7am and there will only be

80 trees available, but the club’s COVID plan will require some help,” he said. “Potential buyers need to be patient while the truck is unloading and exercise social distancing while waiting and selecting that special tree.” The trees sold will enable the club to donate to the Nepean Family Room at Nepean Hospital.

Penrith City Council is finalising the designs for City Park and as we move closer towards the delivery of this cityshaping project we have been given an exciting glimpse into Penrith’s new green civic heart. The design incorporates the ideas and input provided by our community over several years and proposes a beautiful, vibrant space that strengthens Penrith’s position as western Sydney’s most liveable city. Our community’s vision for City Park as a natural retreat in the heart of the City Centre is taking shape with the design featuring a variety of large shady trees, a sensory garden, water features and natural landscaping. There’s also space for everyone to meet, retreat, eat, be active and celebrate together with these aspects set to stimulate the day and night time economy by attracting locals, visitors and investors. The design also showcases smart technology, creative design and natu-

If you miss out, Christmas World in South Penrith will also have a limited amount of live Christmas trees for sale. With prices starting from $80 there will be some stock available throughout December. For those who miss out, retailers are stocking plastic trees, which can be re-used for many years.

ral landscaping to create a destination within the Penrith City Centre that we can all be proud of. Our community has played an important role in the development of this city-shaping project, and we are now inviting further involvement to help us finalise the design of City Park. This is an opportunity for the community to share their thoughts on important design elements including the layout of the park, the amount of shading, open space areas and other key features. An online survey is open until December 6 and I encourage everyone to visit yoursaypenrith.com.ay/penrithcity-park to complete it. It is exciting to be at a point in this project where we can be discussing the finishing touches on what will be a beautiful, vibrant space that strengthens Penrith’s position as western Sydney’s most liveable city.

Call for testing overhaul Doctors raise concerns over younger people being diagnosed with bowel cancer EMILY FESZCZUK xperts are getting behind a new report calling for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) to be lowered to include people aged from 45-years-old. Released by social demographer Bernard Salt, the report reveals a rising rate of bowel cancer among people aged 45 to 49. Nepean Cancer Care Centre Medical Oncologist, Dr Deme Karikios, said he has seen an increase of younger people being diagnosed with bowel cancer. “I have seen more than expected young people with bowel cancer, but we also know that the rates of bowel cancer in those aged 20 to 40 has doubled in Australia in recent years,” he said. “Those who are most at risk are individuals with a strong family history, who are overweight or physically inactive, have a diet low in fibre and high in meat, smoke or drink unsafe levels of alcohol or have another disorder of the bowel.” Dr Karikios said widening the NBCSP age, beginning five years from the current age of 50 and screening an extra two million Australians would be significantly beneficial. “Early detection is absolutely vital in

E

treating bowel cancer as most bowel cancers detected early can be cured,” he said. “We could potentially catch more polyps and cancers at an earlier stage which will translate to a higher chance of cure in the long-term.” With a spike in bowel cancer detection rates at an advanced stage, Dr Karikios said people should be on the lookout for warning signs. “A few of the most important ones are a change in bowel habit for example, the development of constipation which is unusual for you, or the feeling that you haven’t finished when you use your bowels,” he said. “Blood in the stool or unexplained anaemia are some other ones along with unexplained weight loss.” If anyone experiences these changes or concerns, Dr Karikios recommends speaking to your doctor and acting early, rather than putting it off. “Whatever your age, if you notice changes or have a family history of bowel cancer, it’s important that you talk to your doctor,” he said. “If someone suspects they might have it, they should see their GP who can organise appropriate tests and refer them for a colonoscopy if necessary.”

Santa granted travel exemption from North Pole, but has safety as his priority EMILY FESZCZUK anta photos are a yearly tradition for a lot of families, but many shopping centres have chosen not to hold them this year as a result of COVID-19. You can still find a place around Penrith to meet the big man, but things will be a little different with Santa Claus having to socially distance. A Glenmore Park Town Centre spokesperson said they are excited to be back with a new photography service provider ‘Christmas Memories’. They will be using an online booking system, which costs $25, then parents can add onto their package on the day for an extra cost. “There is a huge community need for real bearded and genuine looking Santas and we are so happy to continue providing this,” the spokesperson said. “The health and wellbeing of Santa, his elves and all the families who visit, is our highest priority so we will be following a COVID-Safe plan.” Despite having restrictions in place, the spokesperson said their team will work for great pictures including offering sensitive Santa and pet photography sessions.

S

“You won’t be able to sit on Santa’s knee or next to him but there will be stools provided to sit and pose on and we will be shooting landscape for best results,” the spokesperson said. “There won’t be a prop box on set this year, but we encourage people to bring their own and get dressed up for a fun Santa photo.” St Marys Village Marketing Manager, Shelby Cockburn, said walk-in Santa photography will take place at the centre from November 28 to December 24. “TJP Digital Media will be taking instant prints available for purchase with no booking system, but all participants must register their details via the QR code as part of our COVID register,” she said. “We ask customers to wear a face mask while queuing, maintain social distance, sanitise their hands, let us check their temperature and not make physical contact with Santa but opt for a wave and a smile instead.” Santa Claus is also making his annual appearance at Westfield Penrith, with customers encouraged to book online with a limited amount of walk-in space available. Sensitive Santa will make a return there this year, along with pet photography.

Boy, what a restaurant! Rice Boy delivers exotic flavours, incredible cocktails and a special atmosphere NATHAN TAYLOR ne of the great joys of travelling to Asia is sampling the delicious array of food and, with international borders closed indefinitely, a new local restaurant is hoping to fill that void. Located inside Penrith Panthers Leagues Club, Rice Boy is a new Pan-Asian style restaurant inspired by the exotic flavours of South-East Asian cuisine. The extensive menu has been carefully designed by culinary expert Jason Chan, and features the perfect balance of both street food and fine dining. Last week I was fortunate enough to be one of the first people to road test this modern and vibrant dining destination (complete with an abundance of neon light) – and I was absolutely blown away. Having travelled to several Asian countries purely for the food, I couldn’t wait to see how Rice Boy stacked up. Chef Chan, who also owns the restaurant and cut his teeth with the Merivale Group, spoiled me and my dining party with an assortment of dishes from the menu that had everyone’s senses truly buzzing. Not only did every dish presented look amazing enough to post straight to Instagram (no filter required), but they

downright floored me with every single bite. Some of my favourites off the menu include the tantalising coconut prawn with wasabi mayo; the juicy sweet and sour crispy master stock pork belly with pickled pineapple and mint; the flavoursome Rice Boy fried rice; and of course the wagyu beef rendang with coconut cream and crispy roti, which transported me back to 2017 when I visited Kuala Lumpur. The thing I loved most about Rice Boy

and I know you’ll love too, is the fusion menu truly has something for everyone no matter how much of a fussy eater you are. “I’ve travelled throughout Asia and worked for many hospitality groups around Sydney. I picked up all these different cuisines from all the places I’ve visited and worked at and decided to incorporate them all together in the one place,” Chef Chan explained. “Instead of people going to different

places to try different cuisines, they can come to Rice Boy for everything SouthEast Asian.” With a fully-stocked bar serving exclusive cocktails and snacks, $59 per person banquets, a great sized funky-looking function room and rumours of a-la-carte Yum Cha in the new year, the future for Penrith’s newest restaurant is looking incredibly bright… just like their neon. Rice Boy is now open inside Panthers.

SNIPS AND SNAPS KIDS HELP SORT IT OUT

SPECIAL EVENT IN PENRITH To celebrate International day of People with Disability (Thursday, December 3) iFLY Indoor Skydiving Penrith is holding a special event. 50 people living with disability will be chosen to win a free indoor skydiving experience. Local iFLy All Abilities ambassador, Rebecca Cramp (pictured) took part in the event in 2017 and is now a regular sports flyer who has competed at two National Championships. Entries close on Sunday, November 29 so enter at www.if lyworld.com.au/ giftofflight.php.

Werrington brothers Allu and Sallu Suraj have teamed up with Penrith City Council to teach the community how to sort their waste. The boys have used their YouTube channel to share a video they made about three different bins and the importance of recycling to help take care of the environment. Watch it at shorturl.at/dKPS2.

LOCAL MILLIONAIRE! A St Clair man admitted the news he’d become an overnight Monday Lotto millionaire gave him pins and needles throughout his body. The man held the only winning entry in Monday night’s Lotto draw. “God, I am completely blown away. I need to sit down and let this sink in,” said the man, who has chosen to remain anonymous.

COMMUNITY OVER FOOD

! BOARD BACK Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) President, Barry Calvert, has been returned for a third term, at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting at Crowne Plaza, Hawkesbury City Council last week. All four members of the WSROC Executive Committee were returned to their positions, unchanged for another term. Joining Cr Calvert are Blacktown Mayor Tony Bleasdale as Senior Vice President, Blue Mountains Councillor Don McGregor as Junior Vice President, and Liverpool Councillor Karress Rhodes as Treasurer.

DONATION ROTARY RAISES CRUCIAL FUNDS Penrith Rotary Club held a special fundraising BBQ at Harvey Norman in Penrith last weekend, raising money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The crew cooked up a storm last Sunday, raising around $1000 for the important cause. Well done to all involved.

BREKKY BATTLE 2Day FM is returning to the breakfast radio market, confirming Dave Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan will form ‘The Morning Crew’ from January 18. Molan will remain with Channel Nine but it seems she’ll depart the 2GB Continuous Call Team. “We’re lucky to have a brilliantly hilarious and established show sitting in our fold that Sydney already knows and loves and is ready to hit the ground running in 2021,” said SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron. 2Day FM has struggled in the ratings ever since the departure of Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O in 2013.

NEW BBQ AREA OPENS “We would love to have your business. It means jobs for Queenslanders.”

22 local communities from around the nation, including the Blue Mountains, are featured in the custom Australian Community Relief Monopoly game board to unite Australians nationwide and raise much needed funds due to the impacts of various disasters including bushfires, floods and COVID-19. The edition will see locally themed squares replace Mayfair and Park Lane from the original Monopoly board and include a customised ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ playing cards, making the entire game a truly Australian experience. The game is out now at Big W, Dymocks and other retailers.

QLD PREMIER ANNASTACIA PALASZCZUK’S CALL TO NSW

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has visited St Thomas Anglican Church Cranebrook (TOMS) to open their new Community BBQ area. Mr Ayres said this project was funded through the NSW Government’s My Community Project program with a grant of $42,054. The My Community Project was made possible by the NSW Generations Fund to help improve the wellbeing of people and communities and put the decisionmaking in the hands of local residents to nominate which projects they wanted to see delivered. The new BBQ area opens fresh opportunities to extend TOMS’ care towards the people of the area and further develop relationships and a strong sense of community over food. TOMS strive to provide a safe space for local residents to come and enjoy a BBQ, encouraging a sense of community. The new area is wheelchair accessible and the church has members who are Working with Children check approved and course qualified in safely working with children and the vulnerable. “It is my pleasure to see the finalised project which I know will benefit the congregation and the greater community,” Mr Ayres said.

STUDENTS IMPRESS NSW GOVERNOR Students from Holy Family Primary Luddenham left a lasting impression on the Governor of NSW, Margaret Beazley during her recent visit, displaying an impressive understanding of politics, government and what it takes to be a good leader. As part of their education about government and politics, the school held a unique mock parliament where students presented ‘bills’ for things they wanted done at the school. Students had to develop proposals and deliver a combined presentation on the merits of their

respective bills. Initially happy to arrange a virtual visit, the school was thrilled to hear that the Governor was so impressed with the school’s programs that she wished to visit in person.

Student groups also had an opportunity to present their Western Sydney Airport designs to the Governor, part of their investigation into the changing face of western Sydney that they are growing up around.

What started with John Costa and his electrical installation and contracting business in 1964, has today become known as J&M Costa Enterprises operating from their Penrith head office. The business is now employing over 50 qualified tradespeople, apprentices, technical and administrative staff along with retail sales staff making it one of the largest domestic electrical companies in New South Wales. We have been experiencing more traffic through our socials and webpages and increased click throughs from our Google AdWords. What advice would you give to other small businesses in the same situation? It’s never bad to ask for help on something you are unsure of and that you are never too young or old to start learning on how to evolve your business.

What was the main struggle you identified within your business? We can all admit that in business there is so much to know and learn, and although you may be great in many areas there is always an area that you tend to struggle with. We noticed that our online presence was not where we wanted it to be and our knowledge on getting it up to date was low. After working big hours daily, the smaller things like social posts at the end of the day tend to escape your mind and the team at WSBC have eased

the stress. I could be sitting on my socials thinking about clever ways to promote the business and before I knew it an hour would pass. We believe a more professional approach will allow us to grow our business even through the more challenging times.

What are your business goals for the future? Increasing our online presence while offering information on the right product for our clients and helping to allow our potential customers make the right choice for their electrical and air conditioning solutions.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Pure hits return to the stage

R EMILY FESZCZUK

adio station WSFM is kicking off summer in western Sydney with its ‘Pure Gold Live’ events. 10 amazing acts will be performing 30 massive hits at the Sydney Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill. Aussie rock legend Richard Clapton is back for the sixth year and joins the likes of Dragon, Thirsty Merc, Glenn Shorrock. Shannon Noll, Wendy Matthews and

Mark Callaghan of GANGgajang. Richard said he is excited to be back and part of the incredible line-up. “This year has actually been really busy for me working on an album of hippy anthems from 1968, but I have been doing ‘Pure Gold’ shows for years and they are always popular,” he said. “We only get a limited time on stage but with 10 bands or artists that have all had top five hits, the audience gets a smorgasbord of choice, which is great.” Hoping to break the COVID blues, the 72-year-old said he will play a small selection of his hits. “Usually you only get to play three or four songs so I will most likely play

‘Capricorn Dancer’, ‘Deep Water’, ‘I am an Island’ and ‘Girls on the Avenue’,” he said. “They are the crowd pleasers and ‘I am an Island’ really rocks out, so that is always a good way to end the set.” With each artist boasting long and successful careers, Richard said they are all still going strong. “In the last 20 years my career has gone from strength to strength rather than fading out and that is the case for a lot of acts from the 1980s,” he said. “There is still a really healthy audience all over Australia for this genre of music, which includes older people but also young people who like a more retro sound.”

‘Pure Gold Live’ promises to be a night full of hits when rock ‘n’ roll was a way of life and there wasn’t a camera phone in sight. And it’s a great way to get back into live music post-pandemic. Richard said true rock music stands the test of time and makes for a fun night out for people of all ages. “We are real bands, with real roadies making real live music for everyone to enjoy,” he said. WSFM’s ‘Pure Gold Live’ is at Sydney Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill on December 4 and 5 at 7.30pm. Tickets are from $129. To book or for more information, call 9851 5912 or visit sydneycoliseum.com.au.

At the movies... Romance and laughter ALL MY LIFE +++ 1 hour, 31 minutes EMILY FESZCZUK

‘All My Life’ is a film inspired by a true story all about making the most of life. The pace moves very quickly as new couple Sol (Harry Shum Jr.) and Jenn (Jessica Rothe) meet, fall in love and get engaged in quick succession. While it might seem rushed, it is intentional as the real story begins when the couple’s wedding plans are thrown off course when the groom is diagnosed with liver cancer. We know tragedy is likely to strike and director Marc Meyers wants you to know that as well. That way you have already accepted the sad reality and get to focus on all the happy

moments, which is the main message of the movie. This romantic drama can be overly sweet and full of clichés, but it isn’t a bad thing. The characters could have been developed further but they are likeable and provide humour throughout. I could have gone without the scenes with singing but with Shum Jr., who starred in TV series ‘Glee’ as the lead, I wasn’t surprised, and it was just another method to keep the feeling light. Despite all the positivity it is a tearjerker at times, so don’t forget to pack the tissues as they certainly came in handy for me.

TEST YOUR BRAIN Str8ts How to beat Str8ts Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, e.g. [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

You can find more help and strategies at www.str8ts.com along with more puzzles, Apple apps and books.

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

It’s a wonderful week to tackle a creative project and express yourself in your own unique and quirky Aquarian way, as the Lunar Eclipse stimulates your drama and eccentricity zones. From Wednesday onwards, a fresh chapter opens up involving your peer group so make sure you choose any new friends wisely. Mark Twain: “Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience … that is the ideal life”.

The main celestial theme for this week? A work issue, volunteer project or family matter is taking up a lot of your time and attention but, if you hang in there, it will pay off in the long run. Mars also activates your money zone and motivates you to move forward financially. Then Sunday’s Venus-Neptune trine highlights romantic love, dreaming big dreams and imagining creative schemes.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Gung-ho Rams are fantastic at starting things but not so good at finishing them. Monday’s Lunar Eclipse heralds a brilliant light-bulb moment, when you have the enthusiasm to get an ambitious idea off the ground. Mercury and Saturn also boost your patience and persistence so you can (hopefully) see the project through to a successful conclusion in the future.

TAURUS

GEMINI

CANCER

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Monday’s Lunar Eclipse shines a spotlight on personal and shared finances, plus power and trust issues. Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto also encourage you to take a good long look at your basic values, life philosophy and future aspirations. And how much do you truly value your authentic self? You must remember, there is just no substitute for healthy core self-esteem.

The Lunar Eclipse highlights the precarious balancing act between personal needs and relationship responsibilities. Creative communication and smart negotiation are the secrets to smooth partnerships, as you take the time to talk things through. When it comes to financial matters and property issues, if you’ve done the hard work required then you’ll be able to capitalise.

You’re keen to daydream the hours away in your cosy Crab cave, as Monday’s Lunar Eclipse visits your solitude zone. But – as you retreat into your own private world – make sure you can differentiate between fact and fantasy, otherwise you’ll end up in a confusing mess. A joint venture (or a romantic partnership) needs to pass the Practicality Test. So try to balance being idealistic with being realistic.

VIRGO

LIBRA

SCORPIO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Do you know where you’re heading? With the New Moon activating your career and future direction zone, you need to have a long, hard think about creative adjustments that could improve your life in 2021. Have the courage to listen to your intuition and follow your true destiny. But avoid the Virgo tendency to be paralysed by perfection and obsessed with a sea of possibilities.

Monday’s Lunar Eclipse energises your creative thinking zones but, if you take a sharp detour into fantasyland, then stern Saturn will bring you back down to earth with a thud. A family matter or a financial issue also needs to be examined in a careful and balanced way. Then you need to put on your Big Girl (or Big Boy) pants and make a firm decision. No fence-sitting allowed Libra!

Money matters could become increasingly complicated, as Monday’s Lunar Eclipse stirs up your $$$ zones. Shrewd Scorpio: you have a good business brain – just make sure you’re using it! Ignorance is no excuse. With Mercury also moving into your cash zone, do all you can to improve your financial literacy ASAP. Sunday’s Venus/Neptune trine is fabulous for a romantic relationship.

A romantic or platonic relationship takes centre stage, as the Lunar Eclipse lights up your partnership zone. With the Sun and Mercury both visiting your sign, it’s time to shake off the shackles of other people’s expectations and instead, be the real you. You’ll find your greatest ally is your sense of humour. Mark Twain: “The human race has one really effective weapon and that is laughter”.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

When it comes to ambitious aspirations, social networking and your peer group, the more versatile and inventive you are, the better the final outcome will be. A realistic and disciplined daily routine will also help you to pursue your dreams and achieve your goals. Do your best to show extra kindness and compassion towards a friend or family member who’s going through a tough time.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

With the Lunar Eclipse activating your wellbeing zone, get moving and exercising! Nutritious meals are also on the celestial menu, as you take more interest in your health and more pride in your appearance. If you have the confidence to listen to your wise inner voice, then it will point you in the right direction. Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are all powering through your sign.

Schnitzel Burger For all Schnitty lovers out there, this is for you: a crispy chicken patty with juicy tomato, crunchy coleslaw and Aussie jack cheese on a gourmet bun. But hurry, it won’t last long. WW42972

FUTURE FINANCIAL SERVICES

ALEX MCKENZIE • FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Don’t let your Christmas spending get out of control this festive season increased spending to areas that add the most value. Too much of our spending adds very little value to our lives. It may not be necessary to buy a new outfit for every one of the functions you are attending. I know my wife loves to get a spray tan and her hair and make-up done for an event, it makes her feel great and this adds value. The difference is that she picks and chooses the events she goes “all out” for, while the others that aren’t as important, she does her own and hair and make-up. For me, if I decide not to have a few drinks at some events and drive, I can really reduce the cost of a night by avoiding the need for a taxi or a hotel room. Other nights, I will let my hair down and celebrate. Christmas presents can really add up to be expensive. For my family, we no longer buy everyone a present, we have

a Kris Kringle; we buy and receive a single present, but it is high quality. This works out to be cheaper and better value than buying a large number of inexpensive and lower quality presents. This is just a few examples of how to direct your spending to the things that are important to you, so you can still enjoy the festive season without breaking the bank to do so. The thing we really want to avoid is racking up a credit card debt. Ideally, you have put some money aside specifically for this period or have some savings. If you haven’t and will be putting money on the credit card, at least plan in advance how you are going to pay it back. Don’t let this enjoyable time of the year become an expensive millstone for the rest of the year.

ersonally, I always think of Melbourne Cup Day as the start of the festive season. It seems that the Melbourne Cup functions are the first in a series of Christmas parties and end of year celebrations. It is a great time of year; it can also be an expensive time of year! It is very easy to overspend during this period, and way too many people get themselves into financial trouble. Hopefully, many of you read my article last year and have already allocated funds throughout the year for this period of increased spending, and have your festive period kitty ready to go. If you did, good work and enjoy! Obviously, you still need to be somewhat aware of what you are spending. Increased spending over this period is inevitable, the key, as always, is to direct the

A real pain in the neck H

ave you ever woken up in the morning with a stiff neck that you’re unable to move with no apparent cause? Wry neck is a prevalent condition where approximately 60 per cent of the population at some stage will develop an episode of neck pain. Luckily if addressed early, acute wry neck treatment is usually very beneficial in a short period of time! Causes of wry neck? Wry neck can have several causes, however it is thought that the restriction in range of motion through the neck can result from either a locked facet joint or disc injury in the neck. Other factors that can increase the risk include simply sleeping in the wrong position, not having an adequate pillow that supports the neck or fast, sudden onset of neck movements. Signs and symptoms of wry neck Acute wry neck is when the muscles that control your neck and head

movement become suddenly “locked up”, causing severe neck pain and restricted movement down either one or both sides of the neck. You will find an inability to turn your head without experiencing pain due to constant muscle spasms that result in further limiting how well you can move your neck. Other signs and symptoms can include… • Intermittent pins and needles, numbness or weakness in the arms. • Pain into lower neck, shoulder or upper chest. • Diffuse gradual onset of symptoms.

PET HEALTH

GREENCROSS COREEN AVENUE

DR ERIN SHORT • VET

The weather is getting warmer, so we need to prepare our pets

A

s the weather heats up, the risk of heat stroke in pets rises. Heat stroke is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees – this can cause problems with blood clotting and organ function. Heat stroke can result in shock, internal bleeding, organ failure and eventual death. Cats and dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin. In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on a 45 degree day. Dogs and cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down. Animals will pant, to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions. Dog breeds with short noses have a reduced ability to cool themselves with panting.

Small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs are also very susceptible to heat stroke, especially if kept in outdoor enclosures. As with children, DO NOT leave pets in cars, even briefly, especially in the warmer months. The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures greater than 50 degrees. Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm. Never let a dog do strenuous exercise when the temperature is above 25 degrees. It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during warmer months. If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help. When temperatures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option. If this is not possible, then you

can provide a child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimetres of water for dogs to lie in. Freezing water filled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down resting pets. Dogs will often enjoy drinking water from a large ice block as it melts over the day. This can be done by freezing water in a four litre ice cream container. For rabbits and guinea pigs provide multiple watering devices – preferably dripper bottles so they do not get knocked over or dirty. If you think your dog has heat stroke immediate veterinary attention is vital. Treatment includes safely cooling the patient, supporting with IV fluids and antibiotics. Additional treatment like plasma transfusions and support of organ function may be required. Some animals will die despite treatment.

Why swimming lessons must be part of every child’s life

L

Swim Australia CEO Brendon Ward urged parents to prioritise swimming as a skill every child needs. “It is vital for parents in Australia to ensure their children have the appropriate knowledge and confidence to be safe around water and be equipped with the skills to help them in an emergency,” he said.

“So much of our Australian culture involves the water. Despite this, more than half of Aussie children do not attend swimming lessons because their parents don’t have time or cannot afford it. Yet one in two children still attend another activity or sport like football or dancing. All physical activity is important, but we want parents to view swimming as a non-

negotiable skill their child must learn, especially if they are under five. It’s a matter of safety.” Former World Champion and Australian swimmer, Jade Edmistone, is passionate about teaching children to swim and says it is critical that parents enrol their children in swimming lessons from a young age. “With backyard pools the number one site of drownings in children under five, it is never too early for parents to invest in swimming lessons – they need to become a non-negotiable activity in every home across Australia,” she said. There are several ways to make swimming lessons more affordable including the NSW Government’s two $100 Active Kids Vouchers each year, multiple lesson discounts, sibling discounts, and our intensive program which offers $8 lessons this January. We also offer gift vouchers, which are an easy and hassle-free way to digitally gift swimming lessons for birthdays and Christmas. To arrange a gift voucher, email me at julie@nepeanswim. com.au.

WW42981

ast week I found myself on Channel 10 news, speaking about the importance of water safety and drawing attention to concerning new research revealing that over half of Aussie kids don’t attend swimming lessons and 41 per cent have no intention of starting lessons. The media interest followed an awful weekend that saw three people in NSW drown, including a local child. Tragically this week another NSW family suffered the tragic loss of 41-year-old father Stephen Mote, who drowned trying to save his son and niece from a dangerous rip at a beach near Wollongong. The Swim Safer Report conducted by Swim Australia revealed that a third of Australian families admitted to experiencing a water related emergency such as a near drowning experience, and onein-three parents were not confident their child could get themselves out of trouble in a water safety emergency. More than half of Aussie parents admitted they had only had basic or deficient swimming skills themselves.

LEXUS

More stylish than ever before

exus has upgraded the stylish RC sports coupe with a series of focused changes that pursue more dynamic driving responses and even higher safety standards. With changes to powertrain, suspension and safety equipment, the Lexus RC continues to provide superb driving characteristics and new driver assist technology. Headlining the changes is the addition of new adaptive control software for the intuitive 8-speed Sports Direct Shift automatic transmission standard on both 2.0-litre turbocharged RC 300 and 3.5-litre normally aspirated V6 RC 350 models. New adaptive control software operates in NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT S+1 modes and now more assertively adapts transmission shift points according to driver input and road conditions. Both Lexus RC 300 and RC 350 models also benefit from modifications to the rear suspension with the installation of an increased diameter stabiliser bar with reduced wall thickness and newly developed high-strength aluminium for the upper arm, helping to reduce weight while ensuring rigidity. Lexus Australia Chief Executive Scott Thompson said the addition of new features to the RC sports coupe ensures that Lexus continues to offer customers even higher standards in key areas.

WINNER

Star on the rise p.67

Biggest of dreams comes true NATHAN TAYLOR t’s hard to believe that just six years ago, Josh Green was playing basketball in Cambridge Park as a member of the Penrith Basketball Association. Next month, he’ll debut in the NBA. Last Thursday afternoon, the 20-yearold’s lifelong dream was finally realised when he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the 18th pick at the 2020 NBA Draft. Due to COVID-19 restrictions in the US, this year’s Draft was held virtually with the game’s future stars learning their fate via a TV from their very own lounge room. Green, who grew up in Sydney before moving to Arizona with his family when he was 14, was chosen by the 2011 NBA Champions for his solid three-point shooting and defensive prowess. Speaking just hours after he was drafted, Green said hearing his name called out by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, surrounded by his family and friends, was a moment he’ll remember forever. “It’s a star-struck moment. I think it’s one of those moments, you don’t know what emotion to really express,” he said. “For me being with my family, it’s awesome. It’s something I dreamed of during my whole entire life. For it to really happen is amazing.

“Obviously, it would have been cool to be in person, but this will never happen again. So being around my family and my close ones has been amazing for me.” Green’s former coach at Penrith, Curtis Sardi, said it was an emotional occasion for him as well, seeing the talented shooting guard’s dream come true. “I got a little bit emotional when his name got called out because it is a proud moment,” he told the Weekender. “I have pre-ordered his jersey already and we’ll definitely be watching him and the Mavs closely for a very long time. “I think he’ll do well there; Dallas is a really good fit for him. He’ll bust his chops and it won’t surprise me if we even see him start at some point this year… it’s going to be crazy.” When the new NBA season tips off next month, Green will be teaming up alongside some of the biggest names in the game including MVP favourite Luka Doncic and talented big man Kristaps Porzingis. Many basketball experts believe Green’s style of play could garner him plenty of court time despite being a rookie. “I just want to continue to get better every day,” Green said of his NBA goals. “I think a lot of players take for granted the Draft. For me, I got drafted; now I want to continue to make my legacy, continue to grow as a player, continue to develop and just learn as much as I can.”

NETBALL

Jumping for Joy after claiming huge honour NATHAN TAYLOR enrith District Netball Association (PDNA) President Joy Gillett has collected one of the biggest awards of her career, named Community Sports Administrator of the Year at the 2020 NSW Community Sports Awards. Presented by Sport NSW, the Awards recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions to community sport in NSW over the past year, which is largely carried out by a volunteer workforce. Since Gillett was elected President of the PDNA a decade ago, the sport on a local level has seen significant improvements in participation, coaching, representative High Performance and sponsorship. A PDNA delegate to Netball NSW, Gillett has also managed infrastructure developments at Jamison Park Netball Complex including court resurfacing and environmental shade covering. Nominated for the award by Netball NSW, the Glenmore Park resident said she was shocked to win in a year where everyone put in so much work behindthe-scenes just to get players on the court. “I was surprised to win because I don’t do this role for recognition, so I don’t think

P

about recognition… I just do it because I love it,” Gillett told the Weekender. “It is a real team effort out at Penrith, to get a competition up and running this year with COVID was extremely difficult. “I think everyone, including all of the clubs, appreciated we all had to do what we needed to do to even have a competition. Everyone was just so cooperative and, in a way, it has been great because we’ve got to know each other a lot better.” Sport NSW Chairperson Carolyn Campbell said sport relies on the selfless work of volunteers and congratulated Gillett on her award. “The army of sports volunteers, who are involved in sport every weekend, are the lifeblood that keeps community sport going, and we are delighted to pay special tribute to Joy for the hundreds of hours she has contributed over the past 12 months,” she said. “Despite a year where community sport has been interrupted because of COVID19, sport remains at the heart of communities across NSW. Sport is unique as it has the ability to bring people from different cultures and backgrounds together. “It is fitting we recognise and honour our volunteer sports workforce with these Awards.”

Riding to success Mayor credits Academy as it continues to develop top talent NATHAN TAYLOR ocal cyclist Daniel Samuel has been recognised by Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown for his exceptional achievements on the track this year. The Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) 2020 Cyclist of the Year has been racing BMX for 10 years, track cycling for three years, and joined the Academy’s Cycling program in 2018. After success competing in BMX, Samuel now focuses primarily on track cycling and, in 2020, he placed third in both Sprint and Kerin at the NSW State Championships, both of which were personal bests. As a result of his achievements, Samuel was selected in the 2020 NSW Cycling State team to compete at the National Championships, which will be held next month. “I’d like to congratulate Daniel on his success in BMX and track cycling events,” Cr McKeown said. “Well done on juggling your school responsibilities and your riding, especially during what has been a difficult

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown and local cyclist Daniel Samuel. year. We wish you all the very best for the future in the sport.” WSAS CEO Martin Bullock said Samuel’s achievements deserved to be celebrated in a big way. “Daniel has shown his exceptional talent and commitment during his involvement in our pre-elite program and deserves strong recognition for his achievements,” he said. “We very much appreciate Penrith

City Council’s support of our wonderful young athletes.” Cr McKeown praised the Academy’s variety of development programs. “I’d also like to thank Martin and the Academy for their dedication to athletes from across our region,” she said. “The Academy’s development programs and partnerships make sports more accessible and help young people in our city achieve their dreams.”

New football season to start December 27 Story continued from » p. 68 Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said he was proud that the club was hosting such an historic fixture. “We are very excited to host the very first double header to open the Westfield W-League and A-League 2020/21 seasons,” he said. “Personally, I am looking forward to our members, partners and fans returning to Wanderland in what has been a challenging year. “We are one club here at the Wanderers and the double header is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase what the teams have been working on during the pre-season and we can’t wait to get back in action.” Four-time FIFA World Cup Socceroo and Macarthur Rams captain Mark Milligan said he’s looking forward to the opening round fixture. “After the year that 2020 has been, we are more ready than ever to get back on to the pitch and into the stadium and I know that we’re hearing from members every day about how excited they are that football is back for summer,” he said. “To start our season with a brandnew derby showdown against the Western Sydney Wanderers is the ideal way to kick-off and we are ready to go.”

GOLF

Seeing double: Rare scenes as From footy to golf: Exciting golfers achieve incredible feat new venture at ANZ Stadium NATHAN TAYLOR

NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith Golf Club was the scene of one of the rarest feats in sport earlier this month, with two men scoring hole-in-ones on the very same day. Veteran Penrith golfer Steve Williams was over the moon when his tee shot on the 15th hole finished at the bottom of the cup, for a hole-in-one and a certain Nearest the Pin (NTP) prize. But imagine Williams’ surprise when his playing partner checked the NTP card, only to find a player in the preceding group had aced the hole too. Another veteran, Ian Forrester, had his name on the card first but fittingly, he and Williams shared the NTP honours and prize money. Left-handed Forrester had been having a shocker of a day right up until the 15th at Penrith, but his mood improved dramatically when his 7-iron shot holed out. Right-handed Williams was also playing below handicap when his 8-iron produced the same result, allowing him to improve and finish the day just two shots off his handicap. A truly remarkable achievement, one Ian Forrester and Steve Williams. both men will remember forever.

P

ee-time has replaced try-time and greens have replaced goals as ANZ Stadium prepares to host one of Australia’s most unique sporting events. The turf will be cut super-fine inside the former Olympic venue to create a new nine-hole golf course, which opens to the public next week. Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the crown jewel in the state’s sporting and entertainment venues network will host the 2020 G9 Stadium Golf from Friday, December 4. “Golfers of all skill levels from weekend hacks to Jason Day are invited to take on the unique nine-hole golf course built into the stands of Stadium Australia,” he said. “The transformation from footy stadium to golf course is just amazing and is a great example of the variety of events our sporting venues can deliver for the people of NSW.” The unique format will see golfers teeoff from the grandstand onto the grass, which just recently hosted the NRL Grand Final and State of Origin. “After nine holes, golfers can grab a refreshment in the Stadium Golf Clubhouse in a COVID-safe environment,” Lee said.

TRIATHLON

Triple threat proves she’s got a huge sporting future NATHAN TAYLOR fter dabbling in an array of sports at school, it appears Yellow Rock teenager Hannah Roots has finally found her path to stardom. The Penrith Anglican College student is a lover of all sports, however more recently she’s been focusing on triathlon after proving she is a real triple threat. In the past, Hannah has represented her school at Regional, State and National level in athletics, swimming and triathlon. She has also represented her Region in swimming and athletics. Following a strong past couple of years competing, the Panthers Triathlon Club member has become the latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Junior Sports Star Award. Last year, Hannah placed seventh at the NSW All Schools Triathlon Championships and 16th at the Australian All Schools Triathlon Championships. Also in 2019, she competed in the famous Nepean Triathlon, placing fifth in the 13-15s division. She also finished sixth in the NSW State Little Athletics 300-metre race. Earlier this year, Hannah was accepted

A

into the Western Sydney Academy of Sport prestigious Triathlon program, the latest in her long list of achievements. The youngster won silver at the NSW All Schools Triathlon Championships and was selected to compete in the NSW All Schools team at the National All Schools Triathlon Championships. While time will tell what 2021 has in store for her, it’s quite clear that the future is very bright for Hannah no matter what avenue she decides to pursue. Nominated by Natalie McClelland from Western Sydney Academy of Sport, Hannah Roots’ Junior Sports Star Award is all thanks to sponsor St Marys Leagues Club. If you or someone you know has achieved in their chosen sport, send in your nomination to Penrith Valley Sports Foundation. There are three categories to be nominated in: Reach for the Sky (up to 10 years); Junior Sports Star (11-16 years); and Senior Sports Star (over 16 years). Nomination forms are available at www. pvsf.org.au. Winners not only receive great prizes but are featured in the sports section of the Western Weekender, highlighting their tremendous achievements.

Hannah Roots is the latest PVSF Junior Sports Star.

Around the grounds CRICKET: A maiden century by Tyran Liddiard has seen Penrith clinch victory over Hawkesbury in Round 6 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a Two-Day match at Howell Oval, Hawkesbury won the toss and elected to bat first. After a brilliant knock by Dale McKay on day one, Hawkesbury were later dismissed by the home side for 262. Ryan Fletcher was the best of the bowlers for Penrith taking 4/55. When Penrith hit the crease on day two, they resumed on 0/27. After losing some early wickets, victory looked out of sight – that was until Liddiard went into bat. The young keeper was on fire with the willow, scorching the opposition on his way to 125. Liddiard’s incredible 10th wicket partnership with Ryan Smith garnered plenty of headlines, with Penrith winning with just one wicket in hand, 9/265. Penrith will look for back to back victories when they face Sutherland this weekend in a two-day match at Glen McGrath Oval.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks

BASEBALL: The Greater Western Warriors first grade team endured another lacklustre week of results against the Ryde Hawks in Round 8 of the NSW State Baseball League competition. In the mid-week game, Greater Western went down 6-1. While in the weekend game, Greater Western were trounced by the Hawks 12-3. The Warriors will face the Central Coast Marlins in Round 9. AFL: The GWS Giants have created history as the first club ever to secure three first-round draft picks as part of the 2020 AFL trade period. The historic trade saw the Giants receive picks 13, 15 and 20 from Geelong for Jeremy Cameron, the first time a player has been exchanged for three first-round draft picks in addition to the first time a club has matched a restricted free agency offer. Jye Caldwell then joined Essendon with GWS receiving pick 29 and a future second-round pick. The future second-round pick was then on-traded to Geelong as part of the historic deal.

CRICKET: Round 6 of the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) is in the books, with Panthers Cricket Club enjoying another terrific weekend of results. In first grade, Panthers 5/124 defeated Phoenix 10/110. In sixth grade, Mulgoa Valley hit the crease first, posting 8/96. With the weather looking ominous, Penrith had to fly through their innings in order to win the match. Panthers managed to score the runs they needed in the 20th over.

have won back to back games for the first time this season, overcoming the Northern Sydney Rebels 6-0 in Round 7 of the Gridiron NSW Men’s competition. Meanwhile, Nepean’s Colts team have also recorded back to back wins, defeating the Rebels 20-0. This Saturday both teams will look for three straight victories when they take on the Wollongong Mustangs at Doug Rennie Field in Kingswood.

Life starts at Thornton Park For John, moving to Thornton Park was about spacious living and a warm community. “The day I decided to move into Thornton Park, I walked into the apartment, looked out the window at the gumtrees and thought, “This is it. I could definitely live here.” It was the best decision I could have made. It’s great moving into a community where every day’s different and there’s always somebody to chat to. I was out on a walk recently and a bloke I know asked me, “What do you think of Thornton Park Retirement Village?” I said, “Mate, it’s the best kept secret in Penrith.” It’s absolutely lovely. It really is.” If you’ve ever thought about retirement living, don’t hesitate to contact us for an information pack and to book your obligationfree tour. It just might be the best thing you ever do.
