FACE MORTGAGE WOES Almost five million Australian mortgage holders live in housing they can only afford to pay for month to month, according to Finder, Australia’s most visited comparison site. Dropping prices, with further drops expected, may be good news for newcomers to the property market, but nearly half (48 per cent) who currently have a mortgage are struggling. A recent Finder survey of mortgage holders found that 40 per cent are living month to month, seven per cent are barely able to make payments and two per cent are behind in repayments. Graham Cooke, insights manager at Finder, said financial hardship is a pervasive problem in Australia. “Living month to month is a reality for millions of Australians, so if you’re in this situation, you are not alone,” he said. “A good first step to easing mortgage stress is to see if you can get a better deal. Switching to a rate that is half a percentage point lower, like from four per cent to 3.5 per cent, could save the average Aussie more than $1,300 a year

A DIY PROJECT as a designer and stylist both here and in the UK, there are a couple of key practical tips that will have you well on your way to styling the space of your dreams without blowing the budget and your sanity. Prioritise and decide what you do and don’t want Whether you’re working on multiple rooms or just one room,
it’s important to get a list together and focus on your priorities. Think about what your ‘must haves’ are and put the most important things on the top of your list, and the not so important ones on the bottom. This will help frame what you allocate on your budget. Another factor that will help you frame your budget is whether you
want high, medium or low end items or a mix of all. Also ask yourself if you are willing to purchase second hand. Websites such as Gumtree as well as local flea markets have some amazing high end pieces for great prices. My tip here is to do your research and know what pieces and styles you are looking for and know how much you are willing to pay for it. Put a realistic budget together Do some research on your priorities in the style you like and see if there are any alternatives in high or low end options. From here you should have a general understanding of the cost of the things you want and put a rough framework of the total costs you think will be involved and set your budget around that. Be realistic and allow for a little extra just in case. Don’t forget to include labour and delivery costs! Allocate time Planning the style overhaul of a space is not easy. Most of you have work, families, study and lives that you ultimately need to get on with. Allocate a couple of hours a day or week to slowly plug away at sourcing, budgeting and eventually installing your space. Whilst sourcing and budgets can be done incrementally, I recommend you install all at once, even if you take a full day or put aside a couple of days to install bigger jobs, it all pays off as there’s nothing worse than having to navigate guests or family around an unfinished space in your home. right ladder for the right job. This is very important. Stay right away from power lines.
Most importantly, if you don’t feel comfortable climbing one, don’t do it! Simple steps can help to avoid dangerous mistakes.
