Despite falling property prices, young people are feeling more disheartened than ever about their prospects of owning a home, according to new research by Finder, Australia’s most visited comparison site. A nationally representative Finder survey found more than a third (37 per cent) of non-home owners say they don’t think they will ever be able to afford a home, a substantial increase from 23 per cent in Among2021.gen Z non-homeowners, the percentage who feel they will never be able to afford property has increased from six per cent in 2021 to 15 per cent this year, while for millennials it has grown from 21 per cent to 34 per cent. Investment bank Jarden fore casts property prices in Australia could fall by as much as 20 per cent over the next 18 months. A 20 per cent decline would knock $280,000 off the median Sydney house, and $189,800 off a house in RichardMelbourne.Whitten, home loans expert at Finder, said it was sad but understandable that many young people were worried about the prospect of owning a home in the near “Housefuture.prices have skyrocketed over the past few years, and have become downright ridiculous in some areas," he said. “But with economists predicting a recession and interest rates finally rising from their rock-bot tom lows, it’s likely we’ll see house prices fall in the second half of 2022, especially in Sydney where prices can be more volatile.”

Savings rates are becoming much more competitive, and as they increase all that interest you earn will compound. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have so far been weath ering the challenges to their operations from the big rise in official interest rates, cost of living pressures, staff shortages and a downturn in consumer confidence, according to some business lenders. Online business lender OnDeck has reported applications for unsecured loans were strong er-than-anticipated in July, while ASX-listed business lender Prospa has told investors quarterly loan originations were up 35 per cent on the same period a year earlier. That sounds like welcome posi tive news for business, although I suspect many SMEs are still doing it tough after already enduring the hurdles thrown their way over the past few years including the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters.Thelatest NAB business survey in July found a 17.5 per cent average annual increase in costs for business while they had to increase prices on average by 8.3 perTherecent.is also a view that busi nesses are reluctant to take on additional expenditure and staff in the current times because they are unsure about ongoing demand in the current environment of interest rate hikes and inflation. Westpac’s Chief Economist Bill Evans in a recent presentation mentioned that finance to small business is reducing while lending to medium and large businesses has been increasing. Evans is also predicting next year could be harder than this year with condi tions not improving until 2024. OnDeck’s Australia Chief Cameron Poolman said of his company’s results: “From an application point of view it’s been very strong the last few months, and last month was very strong in terms of small businesses applying for credit. What we have seen is possibly some segments with more difficulties than others, particularly those where inflation has impacted and so has supply chain.”Bell Partners has extensive experience in helping a wide range of businesses.
