For over a decade Australians have had a love affair with the Hamptons style, with the trend increasing throughout the 2020 renovation boom, and now considered as one of the most desired design themes for Aussie homes in 2022. However, it’s not just the indoors that the Hamptons trend is featuring, it’s a favourite in outdoor areas as well.

“The incredibly popular Hamp tons styling trend, which takes its name from affluent American coastal towns of the same name, is not limited to indoor decorat ing. The Hamptons style with its combined sense of serenity and tranquillity is perfect for backyard, garden and entertain ing areas,” said award-winning landscape designer and Adbri Masonry Ambassador, Jason Hodges.

Key design themes for Hamp tons gardens include; lush green lawns, privacy hedging, and paved patio areas with styled outdoor settings. Here, Jason Hodges provides top tips to achieve Hamptons style, from the street kerb all the way to the back fence.

“It’s important to have struc tured and symmetrical areas, so it’s a good idea to plan and create zones. The way things relate to each other with respect to size (big, medium, small) is key in residential design elements, as they need to be in proportion to each other, too much variance in size creates confusion,” he said.

Front garden and entry

The front garden and entry offer the first impression of your home, so it’s important to maximise street appeal. A typical Hamp tons house garden consists of a mix of lush, green lawns, neatly trimmed hedges and topiaries, as well as traditional flowering plants mostly in blues, whites and purples, like hydrangeas, orchids and gardenias. Rather than chaotic paving and random flowerbeds, Hamptons-style land scaping demands an organised approach, so structured symmet rical paving is essential.

Driveway

Driveways don’t have to be just functional concrete slabs. Lightcoloured rectangular pavers, such as Adbri Masonry’s Havenbrick, placed in a stretcher or herring

bone pattern, add to the overall neat, manicured landscaping of the front yard and creates a stunning first impression leading up to your home. There are many different pavers to choose from, however, when considering pavers for your driveway, ensure they are rated for driveway use.

Side paths

A well-presented side path is practical and attractive and can increase the value of your home, as well as adding valuable addi tional space to utilise. To have the continuity of Hamptons-style throughout your property,

consider a footpath or feature stepping stone path using large format square or rectangular concrete pavers.

Backyards

A beautiful deck with white rails bordered by lush, green hedges will create the classic Hamptons garden design, however, if you have a smaller space, you can bring in the greenery with buxus balls that still allow for formal ity and provide a manicured aesthetic.

Why did you become involved in the real estate industry?

Always have been from my early finance days the transition happened when I was looking to supplement my income with weekend work to feed a growing family.

ALL EYES ON LABOR CHALMERS TO PRESENT BUDGET

It’s unlikely when Federal Treas urer Jim Chalmers announces his first Budget next week it will be an economic blueprint to match that of his political idol Paul Keating in 1988 when he declared his then record surplus budget “the one that brings home the bacon”.

Dr Chalmers completed his thesis on the Keating prime ministership from 1991-96, which also featured an infamous broken election promise regarding income tax cuts that had been hailed by Keating as being ‘L-A-W’ law.

Almost 30 years later, the new Labor government has been under pressure from within and by economic commentators and some sections of the media to also

break an election promise and pare back legislated stage three tax cuts, which are worth $18 billion a year from July 2024 and apply a flat marginal tax rate of 30 per cent to those earning $45,000 to $200,000 a year.

After flagging trimming the tax cuts to bolster the medium-term budget bottom line at the Octo ber 25 Budget, Dr Chalmers has backtracked on the proposal as has Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, with the move seen by many as political poison given the high number of beneficiaries from the tax cuts and the elec torate’s previous punishment of governments breaking election promises.

While we may not see these tax

cuts altered next week in what is essentially a mini Budget, the decision could be put off until May next year when the annual Federal Budget is due.

Dr Chalmers has painted a pessimistic picture about the economic outlook, although he is not forecasting Australia going into a recession. He has said the upcoming Budget will address the “blunt and brutal” economic landscape and will focus on three factors: rising inflation, the world economy and spending pressures.

Spending cuts are highly likely although the Treasurer has said health, aged care, defence and the National Disability Insurance Scheme budgets are not expected to suffer.

Melissa Jerzyna – Penrith
