CREDIT CARD CRISIS ARE YOU DROWNING IN DEBT?

Despite official interest rates in Australia being at an all-time low, many thousands of consumers are still racking up big debts due to their high interest rate credit cards. While the Reserve Bank of Australia’s cash rate is at 0.1 per cent and a range of home loan interest rates are available at lower than two per cent, there are people struggling to pay down credit cards with banks charging interest rates of around 20 per cent! According to financial comparison site Finder, there are 13,489,697 credit cards in Australia as of February 2021, netting a national debt accruing interest of $20.6 billion. One positive economic impact
of COVID-19 in Australia is that credit card balances have actually been falling with total credit card debt reduced by about 25 per cent over the course of 2020. But for too many people, paying off a credit card remains a desperate challenge and they may only be managing to make minimum monthly interest payments, which does little to reduce debt. If you also have just lost JobKeeper and are out of work while owing rental arrears and payments to utility and insurance companies, the burden of having a few thousand dollars on a credit card charging 20 per cent interest, compounding annually, must be overwhelming. Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas recently wrote to the Federal
Government to recommend tying credit card interest rates to the official RBA cash rate, with the Financial Services Union supporting the suggestion. There have been no moves by banks to lower sky-high rates but as a result of a 2016 Senate inquiry, unsolicited credit card limit increases have been banned and it’s easier to close a credit card account. Mark’s Shout There are a number of ways to reduce credit card debt such as zero per cent transfer cards which can consolidate outstanding balances into one account to make it easier to manage repayments.
