Bank bashing has long been a national past-time but during the COVID- 19 pandemic banks have done a lot to redeem their muchmaligned reputation. While as a finance broker I am often telling consumers looking for a loan they are better off dealing with a broker than a bank, I still recognise the enormous contribution banks make to the Australian economy. According to the Australian Banking Association, there are 98 banks in Australia which employ more than 188,000 people. Almost 20 million Australians are bank customers and more than three million people are shareholders in Australian banks. The Hayne Royal Commission
into misconduct in the banking, superannuation and financial services industry a few years ago painted a bleak picture about bank behaviour, finding that greed and a focus on sales and profit led to most of the bad behaviour. But since the COVID outbreak, our banks have been a major reason why Australia’s economy has been one of the best if not the best performing economy in the world. The Reserve Bank of Australia providing a $90 billion package of ultra-cheap loans for the banks after the initial COVID outbreak and resulting economic downturn enabled them to be generous towards customers.
The banks allowing customers to defer loan repayments for six months or more enabled people to keep their homes and businesses to survive. Mark’s Shout... One of my colleagues at Bell Partners reminded me that we need to think more about the people working in the banking sector instead of indulging in bank bashing. It costs nothing to be kind to someone and when dealing with bank staff at the branches, customer service personnel on the phone, assessors, business development managers and others we should consider the daily pressures they are under.
