We certainly live in interesting times, but these are also good times – in theory – to be a borrower. Record low official interest rates, governments throwing money at first home buyers and now two of the major banks have launched credit cards offering zero interest rates. But are these interest free credit cards too good to be true? Aimed at countering the buynow- pay- later companies such as AfterPay and Zip Co, NAB’s ‘StraightUp Card’ offers credit of up to $3,000 with no interest, no late payment fees, and no currency conversion fees. The Commonwealth Bank’s Neo Card will hit the market in late 2020 with similar terms and conditions.

With the interest on the average credit card charged at around 16.78 per cent, these new products look like positive news for consumers looking for more finance options. But please do some homework on these cards. Do not be fooled by the term interest free as the “true” interest rate as a result of using these new cards can be significantly higher. An interest - free credit card might sound great in theory, but it’s important to look at the potential impact of the monthly fees you are required to pay. If you were to spend $1,000 on your card with a $3,000 limit and took 12 months to repay this, you’d be charged $240 in fees, at an effective rate of 41.70 per cent. In comparison, if you were to

take 12 months to pay $1,000 off a credit card with no annual fee and an interest rate of 15.0 per cent, you’d be charged around $84. Mark’s Shout The key with these interest free cards is don’t just repay the minimum balance. You need to repay the debt as quickly as possible to avoid accruing debt and interest. The new interest free cards may be more suitable for people using the cards sporadically. Interestingly, as a result of the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Australians have actually been significantly reducing their credit card debt, which must be one of the few good things to occur since we started dealing with the Coronavirus.

If designing your dream kitchen, whether a reno or new build, is a bit foreign to you, we suggest engaging an expert to help you through the minefield of decisions to be made in the planning of your new kitchen. After all it is usually a very significant purchase. The kitchen is really the hub of the home, especially in open plan living. Getting certain design elements right, will give you not only an aesthetically beautiful kitchen, but a very functional one too! Choosing materials for your kitchen, from the cupboards, benchtops, handles (or no handles) can be a bit daunting because you want to get it right the first time. colour. Charcoal or light greys, navy or soft blues mixed with natural stone and timber can be very striking, even if only used on the base cupboards. There is also glass fronts or open shelving to consider on the upper cabinetry. Open shelving in a natural timber can break up the solid colours of the cabinetry. You may lose a little cupboard space but it will give it a bit more of a modern wow factor – well worth it we think! Designing the layout of your new kitchen will of course depend on whether it is a galley, L-shape, U- shape or G- shape plan. An important thing to think about is your working triangle – the space between your sink, cooktop and fridge. Tip: try to avoid putting the kitchen sink in the island bench.

This can make it look untidy and cluttered if you have unwashed dishes drying on the bench.

Storage is also an important factor in planning. Think about what you have in your current kitchen and what is lacking! Do you want more drawers on the bottom cabinets rather than cupboards? Do you have blind corners that items go into never to be seen again? There is hardware you can add to make your storage solutions better such as swivel shelving for blind cupboards, wine and spice racks, pull out wire shelving and built in waste bins under the sink. There are a lot of options to make your new kitchen very functional, so make sure you do your homework. Tip: make sure the hardware, such as drawer runners and cabinet hinges are of good quality as these will work better and last longer. Happy planning! Western Property Magazine
