I hate to say it, but summer is officially over. Leaves are starting to shed and change colour as temperatures drop, and it’s getting just that little bit harder to hop out of your doona in the morning. If you’re like me, you’re starting to unpack all your winter woolies and long sleeved clothes in preparation for the approaching colder months. But isn’t it funny. We adjust our fashion to stay warm in winter, but not many of us are doing the same for our homes. Here are some great simple, cost effective tips to help keep your homes warmer over the upcoming colder months.

WEATHER ARRIVES Rug up I mean this quite literally! Many older build homes with hardwood floors often don’t have much in the lower foundations of the house to prevent draft from coming up through the floorboards. You may not notice, but as a result, a lot of cold air enters your home through the gaps in your floorboards which is why many older homes have ‘cold spots’ or slight drafts indoors. An easy way around this is to cover problematic spots with a good sized area rug. Using a rubberised rug pad beneath your rug will not only prevent your rug from slipping and sliding, it will

also add further insulation from the draft escaping through your floorboard gaps. Window coverings Did you know that windows are responsible for around 10 per cent of your home’s heat loss? To keep as much warmth as possible indoors during the winter months, consider block out curtains which are not only great at keeping light out, but amazing for keeping the warmth in. If block out curtains are too heavy for your liking, but you like your windows covered during the day time, use a double rail and pair your block out curtains with a

set of sheers. I personally can’t go past Ikea’s great range of curtain rails for their price, style and versatility. I’ve used STORSLAGEN (RRP $37.00) and RÄCKA / HUGAD (RRP $34.99).

Reverse cycling your ceiling fan I know I might sound a bit mad, but for those of you with ceiling fans, it might be worth checking to see if it has a reverse fan function. Some actually do! Did you know that when you put your fan in reverse, it actually does the complete opposite to a regular fan by sucking up all the cold air and bringing all the warm air down? Melissa Bonney, Director at multi- disciplinary design studio The Designory, gives her top tips for creating an inviting living space that you’ll never want to leave: Lay it out Melissa encourages you to consider the layout of the area you’re working with. “Cosy never means cramped, so make sure you edit your living space like you would your outfit,” she said. Did you know that there are hundreds of shades of blue? Or using a light colour can make a room look larger? There are so many things to consider when choosing the right paint colour for your home. The good news AND the bad news is that there are literally thousands of colour hues to choose from making the task both exciting and challenging! While choosing the right paint colour can set the entire tone of a room, it is also the most versatile component in decorating. Sort out things like your furnishings, flooring etc and then set out to choose just the right colours. Here are a few ideas to help make the choice a bit easier.

One big mistake people make is putting test samples on walls. The problem is that it confuses you on what the colour really looks like. What you need to do is paint large pieces of cardboard in the colours you are considering. Move them around the room and look at them next to plants, paintings, furniture. You can change the look of a colour dramatically by what it is next to. For example, put a very light grey next to white and you will see that it is grey but put it next to black and it will look white. Start with a blank canvas then add some feature walls. Feature walls should be painted on walls that have no windows and doors where possible.

Also think about where the colours start and finish. Sometimes it’s good to paint the next wall or return of a wall or archway. Dark colours look best in a matt or flat finish. If your bathroom has tiles all the way to the ceiling, matching the main colour of the tile into the ceiling paint looks fantastic. This is because your eyes are not drawn to a white ceiling. Instead you are looking at the detail you have spent so much money on, the tiles and fixtures. Now, about the blue colours. When choosing a blue, try picking a lighter colour and a greyer blue. It will look better on a big area. Blues are funny and can really confuse people.
