Nothing lasts forever. That is the looming reality for millions of Australians who have benefited from the Federal Government’s JobKeeper program during the COVID-19 pandemic. The stimulus packages which have enabled businesses impacted by the Coronavirus to access fortnightly subsidies from the Federal Government to continue paying their employees has been a great success. The latest figures for December 2020 show the nation’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.6 per cent as 30,000 more Australians found work in the wake of the pandemic. The data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed that for December 2020, the number of employed people in

the country was a figure 784,000 higher than it was in May last year. At its worst in the COVID era, Australia’s unemployment level reached 7.5 per cent in July 2020. It is widely held that without government economic lifelines such as JobKeeper, the unemployment rate could have reached 20 per cent. But will the economy fall off a cliff if measures such as JobKeeper and JobSeeker are wound back by the end of March this year as scheduled? Some leading economists believe the situation is looking less ominous due to the continuing positivity about the jobs market, while some businesses have started handing back JobKeeper payments to the government

due to the unexpected growth. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has pledged to continue to reassess the needs of the hardest- hit sectors such as tourism and hospitality as the stimulus wind up looms, but he warned welfare packages “can’t just continue endlessly”. Mark’s Shout Will 2021 be the year life here in Australia starts returning to some form of normality? Probably too early to tell at the moment but the positive jobs figures are cause for encouragement. The Federal Government stimulus along with the actions of the Reserve Bank and state and territory leaders have been effective in helping to tackle Coronavirus.
