BUILDING FOR A CURE RECORD SALE PREDICTED IN NOVEMBER The final touches are being put on a special new build in Glenmore Park that will help fight childhood cancer when it is sold on Sunday, November 14. The house in Mulgoa Sanctuary is part of the Build for a Cure initiative, where 100 per cent of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Children’s Cancer Institute. With COVID throwing different challenges at them, the partners involved with the charity project still managed to turn a dream into a reality. “We are blown away by the cohesion of the sponsors Mulgoa Sanctuary, McDonalds Jones Homes, Mulgoa Quarries and Austral Bricks, plus all who supplied and supported them,” Children’s Cancer Institute Head of Marketing and Fundraising, Anne Johnston said. “Despite having the site shut for a period as a result of COVID they came together as a team and no problem was too big for them to solve… it is hard to find the words to express how appreciative we are.” Ms Johnston said the funds

RATES COULD RISE
ARE PROMISES MEANT TO BE BROKEN?

Inflation: It’s a word that could be making a comeback in Australia with concerns a rapid rise in inflation overseas could soon have an impact on our economy and also could lead to official interest rates increasing sooner than expected. With the global economy rapidly recovering from the impact of COVID-19, inflation has been rising at significant levels in Europe, the United States and now New Zealand, where costs from food to housing have been lifted by stimulus and pandemicrelated supply disruptions. Peter Costello, the long serving Federal Treasurer in the Howard government, in the late 1990s famously announced “there was no life left in the inflation dragon”.
Only months later inflation came back to life and Costello conceded “it’s a dragon that we always have to keep half an eye cocked on”. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), which has its cash rate currently at a record low of 0.1 per cent and hasn’t inflicted a rate rise on mortgage holders for more than a decade, has been forecasting low inflation to continue. The RBA has also forecast that it does not envisage conditions to require a rise in official interest rates until at least 2024. The RBA has admitted global events are a major input to its interest rate settings. Is it possible the bank could renege on its plan not to raise rates until 2024? John Kolenda, the founder and
CEO of leading aggregator Finsure Group, believes rising global inflation could lead to banks in Australia lifting their interest rates independently of the RBA due to cost of funding issues. Kolenda says there is a lot of pressure on central banks to respond to the rise in inflation. “The RBA has committed to continue purchasing government securities under the Term Funding Facility at the rate of $4 billion a week until at least mid-February 2022, but will it maintain its stance on interest rates until 2024? If banks have issues with a rise in the cost of funds, the RBA’s actions could be negated by banks lifting their home loan interest rates independently,” he said.
