Plunge pools continue to be a popular option for homes, according to Matt Leacy, creative director and founder of the award winning Landart.

Leacy said they’re a popular option for those with limited space who still want a pool.

“If space is limited in your outdoor areas it’s a no brainer,” he said.

“A plunge pool in a tight space still gives you somewhere to cool off in summer, and it’s an option that’s easier to regulate temperatures on and keep sparkling clean. They also come in a variety of shape options and can be very social – it’s easier to sit around in a plunge pool enjoying a drink and talking with family and friends. And plunge pools are also great for people for don’t have the time to maintain a bigger pool, or even retirees who have downsized and are travelling for a big part of the year but would still like the convenience of having their own backyard pool.”

Expense is also a contributor to some people’s decision to go with a plunge pool.

“Obviously in most instances the smaller the pool the smaller the price tag, and ongoing maintenance and chemicals needed, heating and other requirements are all reduced with a plunge pool,” he said.

How you’d like to use your plunge pool and the time of day you’re most likely to use it should impact where you place your plunge pool, as well of course the design aesthetic. If you’d like to be able to keep an eye on kids while they’re in the pool, or to use the pool as you’re socialising, your plunge pool will need to be in a central location. If however it’s for more private use the beauty of a plunge pool is that you can tuck it away into spaces you may not otherwise be able to utilise for a pool – and you can also better place a plunge pool to take advantage or sun or shade depending on what your preference is.

Plunge pools are often the ideal choice for a backyard that doesn’t have great access. Even if you’re craning in it’s obviously easier to do this with a reduced size – and in most instances a plunge pool will fit down the side of properties.

BORROWERS BENEFITTING FROM RATE DISCOUNTS

Although it has spent much of the past year inflicting pain on borrowers with 10 consecutive increases to the official interest rate, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has noted that almost a third of all borrowers have managed to secure a discount on the interest rate charged by their lender.

In its March bulletin, the RBA explained that while lenders have been passing on the central bank’s consecutive cash rate increases in full to variable reference rates, few borrowers pay rates as high as these.

“Instead, borrowers are offered, or negotiate, a discount relative to these reference

rates,” the RBA said, pointing to strong competition in 2022 with banks vying for new and externally refinancing borrowers, particularly those of higher credit quality, in addition to adjusting discounts to retain existing borrowers.

“… around 30 per cent of variable-rate borrowers have renegotiated a lower rate on their housing loan with their existing lender since May (2022),” the RBA said.

“Many borrowers have also refinanced with a new lender, with major banks extending cashback offers to customers of around $2,000–$4,000.”

The RBA doesn’t mention

what part finance brokers may have played in negotiating discounted rates, but it’s most likely a broker would be involved. Borrowers have shaved at least one percentage point off their home loan interest rate through a broker contacting a bank on their behalf and getting a result.

Many thousands of borrowers are also refinancing to achieve a better loan deal. According to the Australian Banking Association (ABA), from almost 309,000 mortgages refinanced over the last six months, data provided by banks showed close to 215,000 – or 70 per cent – of customers switched lenders, while only 94,045 stayed with their existing bank.

While new customers generally get the best offers to lure them in, the fierce competition is forcing banks to offer existing customers incentives such as rate discounts up to one per cent and cash back to prevent them leaving.
