Penrith is choking on its own wet wipes, with the suburb sixth on the list of blockages in the sewer and wastewater network last year.
Castle Hill has topped the list, with Sydney Water removing 71 blockages in 12 months, followed closely by Blacktown (63) and Liverpool (53).
Penrith had 39 blockages and was sixth on the list.
Called ‘fatbergs’, the
blockages are caused by wet wipes and other unwanted debris including grease and fat clogging up our sewer pipes.
In one single cleaning session a ‘fatberg’ weighing 14 tonnes was removed from the wastewater system in Sydney’s south west –which equates to more than one million wet wipes.
It’s another reminder that things like wet wipes, tissues, sanitary products, cotton buds and dental floss and other household waste should never be flushed down the toilet, while fats, oils and food scraps shouldn’t be put down the kitchen sink.
“We’re really urging customers not to flush wet wipes and plastic products down the toilet, and certainly not to put fats, oils
and grease down the sink in their kitchen. Those products should go in the bin,” said Sydney Water Head of Wastewater and Environment, Iain Fairbairn.
“It’s a massive problem and we have an enormous number of blockages each day
across the wastewater network. Fatbergs are a ‘perfect storm’ of wet wipes, oil and grease, cotton buds, hair and many other products that don’t belong in the wastewater system, all combing into an enormous mass, that once big enough, can block the sewer.”

As we approach International Women’s Day, it is a time to reflect on the achievements of women in various industries and to celebrate their contributions. As a woman in the real estate industry, I am proud to be part of a profession that has made significant strides in recent years.
Coming from a matriarchal family, I was raised by a woman who is strong, inspirational, and has unshakeable faith in God. Moving to a new country with a young family and starting all over again from scratch with many bumps and mishaps along the way, it was important for mum to build a life and design a career that provided success, support, prosperity, and work life balance. It was seeing these values that inspired me to strive for my own success in my career and life.
With over 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry in highranking roles, I made the switch to real estate with my husband in 2014. I wanted to transfer my corporate and relationship building skills I acquired and refined in the pharmaceutical
industry with my passion for people. In real estate, you are engaged in people’s lives in a way that you are not in many other professions. Owning a Real Estate business and leading a team for me was the perfect balance of both my passions - people and family. It allows me to grow, encourage, and build the business, alongside my husband. I feel fortunate to be growing and developing my career in a time where skill set is becoming the focus not gender. For me, as does my mum, I keep myself anchored in my faith and live by the verse “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” Proverbs 31:25

GOVERNMENT SET FOR SUPER OVERHAUL
When then Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating (pictured below) was facing electoral defeat in 1996, he famously said: “When you change the government, you change the country”. Now back in power after claiming government almost 10 months ago, Labor under Anthony Albanese looks to be following that catch cry.
Determined to bring an Indigenous Voice to federal parliament and do more to tackle climate change, the Albanese government now has its sights
set on making changes to Australia’s superannuation system in the May budget.
Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers has said the $50 billion annual cost of tax breaks for superannuation is not “sustainable” and he wants to “elevate and broaden” the powerful sector’s role in the economy.
He has hinted the government is looking at a $3 million cap on super funds, with any super above the cap taxed at traditional rates. This change would affect around 36,000 “wealthy” people.
But Labor’s plan to legislate a purpose for superannuation and deploy the $3.3 trillion in savings for nation building has been criticised by former banker David Murray, who said it is “not the place of the government” to decide investments. The Coalition Opposition is positioning for a major political fight with
Labor over the future and purpose of superannuation.
Financial commentator Peter Switzer said other changes to super by Labor could include limiting salary sacrifice or taxing salary sacrifice contributions at a higher rate plus laws to limit early access to super.
Interestingly, Treasurer Chalmers is a protégé of former Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan, a Treasurer in the Rudd and Gillard governments who is now chair of leading industry superannuation fund Cbus.
Swan has defended super funds examining new areas of investment such as renewable energy projects, emerging high-tech manufacturing, medical research and affordable housing.
“Why wouldn’t they?” he said in the New Daily
“These sectors of the economy are where millions of Australians gain employment and profit. They are the modern economy. If funds invest in them, it is because they offer sound investments that promise favourable returns. It is that simple.”
We are certainly in for an interesting few months when it comes to super, and there’s no doubt it’ll be a hot debate heading into the budget in May.
