First the good news: Australia is getting on top of the Coronavirus with COVID cases dwindling and vaccination programs underway while the economy continues on its upward path with unemployment falling. The not so good news if you are a homeowner is the Australian dollar continues to rise, which has led some economists to predict this may have an impact on interest rates. As we recently noted in Broking Breakdown, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Philip Lowe after the RBA board’s first board meeting of 2021 said he did not expect economic conditions to warrant an increase in official interest rates until at least 2024. The RBA this week predictably
keep the cash rate on hold at the current record low of 0.10 per cent. While official interest rates should not rise again any time soon, the Australian dollar’s continued upward movement has many questioning the RBA’s 2024 prediction. If you watch the business segment on the nightly news, you will be familiar with the volatility of the financial markets who ride the daily economic roller coaster. Money markets have been looking at what’s happening with the Australian economy and are starting to wonder if interest rates will start rising again before 2024. During the month of February, the Australian dollar gained around 5 cents against the US
dollar. That would be great if you were able to travel overseas – but you can’t at the moment so the rising dollar is a potential threat to how much you will pay on your monthly mortgage repayments. Mark’s Shout The low Coronavirus numbers have helped the country move out of recession with tens of thousands of jobs being created. While there is always plenty of speculation on money markets about the direction of the economy and also interest rate movements (including interest rates on Australian government bonds), conditions for mortgage holders are generally stable with some of the lowest interest rates in history.
