A MUCH COOLER PENRITH EXPERTS SHARE THEIR VIEWS ON OUR FUTURE Penrith City Council’s Cooling the City Masterclass and Homes and Heat community talk held last week, as part of its Cooling the City strategy, has been hailed a runaway success. Over 300 leading built environment professionals attended the sold - out daytime Masterclass event, held at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, to explore innovative heat reduction strategies to help tackle Sydney’s urban heat dilemma. Masterclass attendees heard from leading scientists, international, national and local academics, sustainability experts, green champions, as well as industry leaders. “We were delighted by the industry and government response to this event, as well as the constructive and innovative dialogue that was generated about real- world solutions to urban heat,” said Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler. “Council wanted to bring a range of national and international perspectives to this discussion to look at how greener development can still work for business to create cooler urban spaces. It’s

vitally important, because we know that the ‘business as usual’ approach to development is not the answer to ensuring Penrith’s future liveability.” The evening event for community members looking for help to cool their homes – Homes & Heat: Inspirational Design, Building & Retrofit Solutions – was also filled to capacity.

“We originally planned to hold this free event at Penrith Library

in a room that fitted 70 people, but when it was booked out within days, we quickly changed the venue to accommodate more people,” said Cr Fowler. “We are absolutely delighted that over 300 people attended the evening to hear from sustainability experts about how to beat summer heat in their homes without incurring crippling energy bills. It never pays to be complacent when it comes to your finances and setting and forgetting your current loans can be costing you money. ‘Should I review my loans?’ is a question brokers are often asked and the short answer is: YES! It’s always important to take a financial health check and ensure you aren’t paying more than you should be. My rule of thumb with a home loan is to review every two to three years. Keep in mind any fixed rate periods you’ll usually need to wait to expire as break costs will generally outweigh savings. If you’re happy with the current lender, our policy is to approach and negotiate with them first. If it has been a good relationship, they

deserve the opportunity to retain your business. With a car loan, it generally makes more sense to look at getting a better deal when purchasing or looking to refinance a residual/balloon payment. Surprisingly, the most important factor in vehicle finance is the cost of the car, not the loan. Dealers often build additional margin on the car, making getting a low finance repayment harder. The solution is to speak to a finance broker aligned with a reputable fleet buyer to ensure you get the best price on the car and the loan. I say this often, but always compare actual monthly repayments on car finance – not the rate. As for business finance, with many expensive short term

options now in the market, it usually makes sense to get these onto a lower rate product where possible, or if it can’t be done now, at least develop a strategy to move away from high cost facilities onto lower cost ones. There are many business finance products available, and it is important to make sure the facility you have matches your needs. YOUR GARDEN CAN STILL LOOK GREAT While recent rain has filled our dams, we all need to do our bit to save water by sticking to the current Level 2 water restrictions. The good news is, with the right strategies in place, you can still enjoy a beautiful, thriving garden. The latest restrictions require residents to put down the hose and reach for the watering can and bucket, while keeping watering times to before 10am and after 4pm. Sounds like a recipe for a brown yard, but there are plenty of ways to keep your plants strong. If you don’t already have one, it might be time to invest in a drip irrigation or smart watering system. Under the current restrictions, these can be used before 10am and after 4pm for 15 minutes a day per watering zone. Using wetting agents when watering, and letting your lawn grow a bit longer by mowing less and keeping your mower on the highest setting, will also help to keep your soil as moist as possible. When you do water, a good soaking less often is better than light watering frequently. You can also make the most of the water you use indoors by reusing it outdoors. Try putting a bucket in the shower to collect the water that would otherwise go down the drain while you’re waiting for it to heat up. Simple tricks like these can lead to big water savings and a happier garden. Give shade sensitive plants a break from the heat by using pop up umbrellas or polymer film to protect the leaves and further reduce moisture loss. For your garden beds, potted plants and vegetable gardens, a generous layer of mulch will also help to retain moisture. Bulbs provide possibly the easiest way of growing your own flowers and vegetables – they are tough, hardy and drought resistant, requiring minimal care after planting. Bulbs are ideal for gardeners of all experience levels and demanding Australian growing conditions. Most varieties last for years – re- emerging each season to provide an abundance of colour or a delicious harvest. Others you plant and harvest each season – such as seed potatoes and garlic. Bulbs are very seasonal in availability. Usually they are only available for two to three months around the key planting times, so make sure you get your favourites when they are in season, or it will be a long wait until they’re

next available. There are two key seasons to growing bulbs: 1. Spring flowering bulbs are planted in the autumn. 2. Summer flowering bulbs and produce are planted from early winter to early spring. March is a key month in the bulb growing calendar – this is when all the spring flowering varieties become available for purchase.

Spring flowering favourites are Anemones, Daffodils, Dutch Iris, Freesias, Hyacinths, Ranunculi and Tulips. These bulbs should be planted during autumn, but latest before mid-June. TOP TIPS BEFORE YOU START HAMMERING! Have you ever stood looking at a blank wall and wondered how you were going to hang your newly purchased artwork? Before you start drilling holes and swinging the hammer, there are a few things to think about first. Where to hang it on the wall As a rule of thumb, if you are hanging a single piece of art, hang it at eye level. Many people make the mistake of hanging art too high. If you are hanging it over furniture such as a sofa, hang it so the bottom is around 250mm above the back of the sofa. If you are hanging multiple artworks in a cluster, lay them out on the floor first to get an idea of where you want to hang them. Then work from the middle out making sure the distance between them is consistent to get that cohesive look. Don’t be afraid to use different sizes and types of frames when grouping pictures. Hanging a group of say three artworks of the same size in a row you will need to make sure you measure the hanging point on the string to the top of the frame on each artwork as it may be different for each frame and you will need to factor that in when measuring from the cornice down to get them all lined up. Here too you can have different types and sizes of pictures side by side to get a that “gallery” feel. Do you need to hang them at all? In staging, when we place an artwork above a sideboard or console table, we will lean them almost flush up against the wall without hooks.
