BOOST FOR PARRAMATTA NEW HOTEL CONFIRMED FOR SECOND CBD IHG Hotels & Resorts is set to become the biggest hotel player in the Parramatta CBD, as it signs an agreement with Pro-invest Group to open Holiday Inn Express & Suites Paramatta, the fourth IHGbranded hotel in the booming Greater Western Sydney hub. The announcement kicks off 2022 in a big way for IHG, continuing the momentum that saw it sign 10 hotels across Australasia last year, and has it poised to open at least 15 hotels in the first half of 2022 alone. Complementing its existing Parramatta hotels, Holiday Inn & Suites Parramatta Marsden Street and Holiday Inn Parramatta, IHG will soon have an even more exceptional offering as it takes its Parramatta portfolio to four IHG-branded hotels and more than 650 rooms, adding Holiday Inn Express & Suites Parramatta in 2024 and the luxury InterContinental Parramatta in 2025. It boosts the Group’s already formidable presence in Greater Western Sydney that includes Holiday Inn Warwick Farm, Holiday Inn St Marys and Crowne Plaza Hawkesbury Valley.
Pro-invest, which owns and operates 14 open or pipeline hotels under IHG’s Holiday Inn Express, voco, Hotel Indigo and Kimpton brands, will manage the purpose-built Holiday Inn Express & Suites Parramatta. The new addition to the city’s accommodation offering will be located right in the centre of the CBD with a prime Smith Street frontage and will boast 239 guestrooms, car parking, meeting facilities and a gymnasium. It will have all the hallmarks of the Holiday Inn Express brand, including express breakfast facilities, express checkin and check-out and bright, comfortable guestrooms. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Parramatta announcement comes hot on the heels of the 2021 news that InterContinental Parramatta would open in 2025 – a major coup as it heralds the city’s first internationally branded luxury hotel. The new-build InterContinental Parramatta will be part of a vibrant mixed-use development that also includes offices and a ground floor retail precinct. In September, hotel owner Holdmark Property Group announced architecture
firm Scott Carver as the winner of the design competition, delivering a brilliantly cosmopolitan design that draws on the brand’s iconic heritage, with a strong connection to community. With the Omicron variant of COVID-19 continuing to surge through the community, banks are ready to step up with support measures for businesses hit with supply chain disruptions and staff shortages as a result of the high infection rates. When the pandemic struck almost two years ago, banks were quick out of blocks to ease the economic pain by allowing millions of homeowners to defer their mortgage repayments for six months, even longer in some cases. During the extended lockdowns last year, the banking industry agreed to offer two-month deferrals for small to medium enterprises while deferrals for
mortgage holders were granted on a case-by-case basis. According to the major banks, businesses at this stage of the Omicron crisis aren’t crying out for assistance but lenders say they are on standby for any support customers might need. Shane Howell, managing director of business lending at Westpac, said the next 30 to 60 days would be the most crucial for businesses – and a number of them might already be looking for some form of financial relief. “It’s the cash flow cycle right now that businesses are focused on,” Howell said. Meanwhile, retailers in NSW have been given a boost with the State Government extending
rental support measures. NSW has formalised a two-month extension of the leasing code of conduct for businesses with turnover of less than $5 million. Other codes of conduct have now expired around the country, leaving small businesses vulnerable to significant cash flow challenges in the first quarter. Australian Retailers Association CEO Paul Zahra said given the wide scale impacts of Omicron, these provisions should be extended to small businesses in every state and territory with a threshold of up to $50 million, as was previously in place. Mr Zahra said: “We’ve entered uncharted territory with Omicron.”
