In the same week that the Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg revealed the biggest budget deficit since World War Two, there was more evidence of the nation continuing on a massive retail spending spree. The Treasurer’s bleak forecast is for a massive budget deficit of $85.8 billion in 2019-20 and then exploding to $184.5 billion in 2020-21, while the unemployment rate is expected to reach 9.25 per cent in the December quarter. He said without government support measures such as JobKeeper, unemployment would have peaked at close to 15 per cent. Meanwhile, Australians withdrawing funds from their superannuation accounts have helped
drive a national shopping spree during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, retail sales in Australia rose a solid 2.4 per cent in June after a huge 16.9 per cent jump in May, which followed a record 17.7 per cent fall in April. People enjoying the easing of restrictions, flocked to reopened cafes, pubs, clubs and restaurants and spent more on clothing in the first full month of trade since the lockdowns ended. But that may all swing in another direction as Victoria deals with a second wave of the Coronavirus and NSW also considers a return to some restrictions as COVID-19 outbreaks increase. Some 800,000 workers with-
drawing up to $10,000 from their superannuation funds has driven the national shopping spree. In the week to July 12, 581,000 people applied to withdraw up to $10,000 from their super funds. This included 109,000 firsttime applications and 472,000 applicants making a second withdrawal, with $6.2 billion paid out in total over the week. Mark’s Shout The risk is we’ve been lulled into a false sense of security from the retail spending splurge. When the super withdrawals wash through businesses may get a second shock at a time when government programs and support is being reduced.

There are other things you can do for extra storage such as a coffee table with storage, built-in
cupboards and shelving around the TV. It really just takes some good planning and a little thinking outside the box! A smaller living space doesn’t always mean you have to think small though. If you have large blank wall, hang an oversized artwork. If you have an empty corner you’re not sure how to fill, place multiple plants of different sizes to make it a feature or a floor lamp for softer lighting. Don’t forget the balcony, if you’re lucky enough to have one, fill this area with greenery to help bring the outside in and also add a sitting area for you to relax and breath in the fresh air!
