MAKING THE RIGHT DESIGN CHOICES

It can be quite confusing choosing the right window dressings in your home. There are so many products to choose from, so where do you start? A good start is to think about window treatments early on in the design process. Think about things like natural light, privacy, the view from the window and budget. It can be an expensive exercise to do this right. Remember it is an investment in your home and something you will live with for many years to come. The most common window treatments are blinds (roller, 30 Western Property Magazine

venetian and vertical), curtains and plantation shutters or a combination of these. Plantation shutters give a clean modern look and are great if you are going for that Hamptons look. Before you choose the type of window dressings consider these things. Do you want light filtering or total blockout (bedroom). Do you want a combination of both say, the dual roller blinds with blockout and sheer blinds? Or perhaps a combination of venetian or roller blind and a sheer curtain to soften the look of the window. There are also things you can

do to make the most of the look of your window coverings. If you don’t have particularly high ceilings, you can hang curtains above the window, closer to the cornice. This will draw the eye up and give a feeling of higher ceilings. If you are building new, you might also consider recessed tracks in the ceiling which will give you a more polished look. For a small window you can extend the curtains either side of the window to make the window look larger. Another important consideration is the fall of the fabric as some will fall smoother

than others. If you have floor to ceiling glass windows with a view, roller blinds would be a good option to take advantage of this. We don’t just dress windows for light or privacy, they are a focal point in the room, and dressed well can give a finished look to your decorating. It’s important to fit your window dressings right the first time, so it may be worth seeking professional help. If you’re on a tight budget, why not DIY your window treatments.
