Almost $50 billion in business and personal income tax cuts announced in the Federal Budget have been passed by the parliament and Australians will start feeling the results in their hip pocket in the coming weeks. These are the tax cuts we had to have to help combat the economic impact of the COVID-19 recession we didn’t want to have. The changes announced in the Budget bring forward planned income tax cuts for millions of Australians and backdate them to July of this year, while businesses that make new investments will be allowed to write off their entire cost in one year. The income tax cuts are worth $17.8 billion over four years,

while business tax cuts and other measures are worth $31.5 billion, bringing the cost of the package to the Budget bottom line close to $50 billion. Bringing forward tax cuts, and other measures such as the expansion of the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme and infrastructure investment will hopefully provide a pathway to recovery. While not everyone was happy with the Budget and the Greens opposed it, most believe this financial stimulus package was necessary to try and keep the economy ticking along. All countries are having to go into deeper debt to maintain economic activity. The more we spend and invest the stronger the

economy will rebound. It is hoped the Government will continue this support until the Coronavirus can be defeated. Mark’s Shout While what was hailed as the most important Budget since World War II was good news for consumers, there is more positivity on the horizon. The Reserve Bank of Australia met on the same day as the Budget was announced, but the central bank sat on its hands. However, many economists are tipping when the RBA next meets on November 3 – Melbourne Cup day – it will back a winner and lower official interest rates from 0.25 per cent to 0.10 per cent.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

LIGHTING DESIGN IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR HOME When people are designing a new build or renovating a home, quite often, not a lot of thought goes into planning the lighting of the home, which is a shame because it can make such a difference to the overall look in the end result. Here are things to consider when planning lighting in the home... Type of lighting is important for many reasons including what you use the space for or the type of mood you want to create for that space. There are different colours and lumens (brightness) to consider. Our favourite type is the warm white because this gives the rooms a cosier, more homely feel. LED lighting is a must! They may be more expensive up front, but will last a lot longer and are more energy efficient. The only area I would suggest using a brighter cool white is in the bathroom. Nothing worse than bad lighting for doing the make- up, right ladies? Bright, cool whites in living areas can make it feel like a hospital waiting room!

Placement of lighting is also crucial to a good lighting plan. Ceiling height for hanging lights needs to be considered down to placement of furniture such as your dining table. If you want to hang a pendant or two above the table, first figure out exactly the size of the table and where you would position it in the room. Pendants are very popular in the kitchen also but be sure to hang them at a height that won’t make shadows over the food preparation or cooking area. A good way to stop shadows on the kitchen benchtops is to place a downlight directly above the area or better still, install lighting under the top cabinets. In the bathroom, you will get the best lighting if you place a sconse or pendant light on either side of the mirror, at eye level. For the living areas, there is no need to place rows and rows of downlights – that much light is just not necessary. Instead think about placing downlights closer to the walls where you might hang artworks. This will give the room a much better atmosphere and highlight

the art on your walls. Another important thing to consider is adding dimmer switches. This is a fabulous way to have instant mood lighting in a room and it feels just a little bit posh! If you are not in the market Friday, October 16, 2020
