Kevin Sheedy will hand the GWS AFL team to Leon Cameron in 2013
Apprentice will take over from master: Cameron joins Giants NATHAN TAYLOR
T
he Greater Western Sydney Giants have announced Hawthorn assistant coach, Leon Cameron, as Kevin Sheedy’s successor when the four-time premiership winning coach calls it a day at the end of the 2013 season. Cameron will join the Giants next season on a four-year deal as the club’s senior assistant coach before taking the reins from Sheedy as head coach in 2014. Giants Chief Executive, David Matthews, was delighted the former
Richmond and Western Bulldogs player had joined the GWS fold. “After a distinguished playing career, Leon has served an extensive coaching apprenticeship with the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn,” he said. Cameron, 40, said he was thrilled to be joining the AFL’s youngest club. “To be involved in such an exciting journey for the game in western Sydney and Canberra and also develop an outstanding young playing list was too good an opportunity to pass up,” he said. Sheedy said he couldn’t think of anyone better prepared for the challenge.
The Western Sydney Academy of Sport is accepting applications from young athletes interested in a scholarship position within the 2012/13 Softball Program. Nominations are open to athletes aged 15 to 17 years who reside in the Academy’s geographic catchment and meet the selection criteria. The Academy’s 2012/13 Softball Program has been developed in close consultation with, and is endorsed by Softball NSW. The Program will take place from November 2012 – July 2013, comprising of technical, educational and personal development opportunities for athletes. Nominations are now open and forms can be found at the Academy’s website www.wsas.com.au. There were some great achievements from Penrith BMX Club riders during the recent BMX NSW State Titles at Southlake held earlier this month. Two local riders returned home State
Champions. Nicole Docherty, 17, won the 17–25 ladies cruiser event while Jordan Lecher won the 16 boys without dropping a race. Penrith BMX Club saw some personal best performances with several riders achieving outstanding results. Other podium fi nishes included Declan Jaehne, Todd McDonald, Kristy Lee Martin, Ayden Boesel, Shane Middlemass and Kyle Jaehne. Overall the Penrith club had 17 fi nalists and six Sprocket rockets (riders aged seven and under) who compete just for fun. The Sprockets riders, Jesse Busuttil, Tyreak Cala, Layla Flanagan, Drazyk Holt, Rhys Mulholland and Matthew, all rode like champions. St Marys Leagues Stadium will host a rugby league international World Cup selection game between Fiji XIII and Italia A tonight, Friday, October 12 at 7pm. The game will be a World Cup warm up to fi nd new blood and develop combinations before next year’s end of year tournament.
