STORM HITS It was quick, but it left behind plenty of destruction. A major storm hit Penrith late last week, bringing with it heavy rain, hail and wind gusts of more than 105km/h. The storm left homes without power and plenty of trees down across the area, keeping the local SES exceptionally busy. Meanwhile, power was out for hours in St Marys on Tuesday after a truck crash created a raft of problems.

Exclusive: Trailer raffle cut for first time in 32 years

fter initiating the Penrith Lions Club Christmas trailer raffle in 1980 as Club President, Allen Jeffery is devastated that for the fi rst time in 32 years the raffle will not be going ahead this Christmas. The Christmas trailer raffle, which has been held inside Centro Nepean for the past 26 years can no longer be hosted by the shopping centre due to a change in the centre layout. “I was really depressed when I got the news at the end of July that they had changed their policies – we had been told in January that we

would be allowed to bring the trailer into the shopping centre as we have done for 26 years,” he said. “I’ve been a Lions Club member for 37 years but this has really taken the wind out of my sails.” The raffle has raised money for a number of local charities but for the past 20 years the Lions Club has been donating all proceeds to the Neonatal Unit at Nepean Hospital. “Over the years funds from the raffle have enabled the purchase of much needed equipment costing in excess of $250,000,” Mr Jeffery said. “Th is year alone we have already donated $17,000 but we were hoping to raise $20,000 through the raffle to coincide with the 20th

anniversary of our partnership with the Neonatal Unit.” The raffle has always been the biggest fundraising event on the calendar for the local Lions Club. “We have the chocolate wheel in the Plaza where we raise funds for the neonatal unit too, but the raffle has always been the biggest event of the year – each year it takes something like 800 man hours to put together and last year we sold 36,000 tickets in just seven weeks – some of our members were so dismayed [that it wouldn’t go ahead this year] they felt like walking away,” Mr Jeffery said. eonay residents are seriously concerned that a housing development proposal for the corner of Leonay Parade and Russell Street could lead to fatal car accidents and traffic banked along the M4 if the development is given the green light. 1A Leonay Parade was owned by the Roads and Maritime Services until it was sold to Zac Homes. A proposal for two three-bedroom units has been submitted to Penrith City Council for consideration, but at a community consultation meeting on Monday afternoon, nearly 30 neighbours expressed their concern about the development. “The simple fact is that you cannot build a driveway so close to the roundabout at the corner of the two roads, where all the M4 traffic passes through to reach Leonay and Emu Plains,” said Russ Collison, who lives on an adjacent block. “I have nearly been run into numerous times trying to turn into my own driveway because people don’t slow down when exiting the M4 and the roundabout at Leonay Parade is already very dangerous. “If a driveway was built so close to the roundabout there is no doubt that we would see car accidents, and most likely fatal ones at that intersection, and traffic banked back along the M4 bridge.” Mr Collison started a petition with his neighbours and has already collected 60 signatures just through word of mouth. At the meeting on Monday other residents said they were concerned because the vacant block currently

to be built, which would have very little surveillance,” Mr Collison said. He said that even now his fence has been vandalised and burnt down and fears that the creation of an enclosed laneway would only encourage anti-social behaviour.

“We would like to see the land bought by Council and turned into a reserve or parklands – this would not only complement use of the river and thoroughfare to the club but ensure the area remains safe too,” Mr Collison told the Weekender.

here’s a few issues floating around this week, so let’s dig into the mixed bag and have a look at what we can fi nd...

Royal Commission the right move Only a few sceptics have suggested that Julia Gillard’s move to announce a Royal Commission into the sexual abuse of children in religious institutions and other organisations was politically based, because, in the most simplest of terms, it is the right thing to do. For too long the hand has been over the mouth of anyone who wanted to talk about this, as if it was some taboo issue that was easier to ignore. That feeling still exists in some quarters. You only have to look at top rating radio broadcasters Ray Hadley and Derryn Hinch, who have both admitted at various times that those above them have tried to water down their dogged and tireless coverage of child sexual abuse (in Hadley’s case, he’s not talking about his current 2GB bosses). A Royal Commission is indeed very serious, and it will most likely uncover the most heartbreaking and awful stories, but it will ultimately be for the better. There are two key things though that must be part of the Royal Commission if it is to have lasting results. Firstly, the sentencing of paedophiles must be looked at, as too often sentences are way below what the community has come to expect. Secondly, we must somehow develop a way to ensure that victims are not looked at as offenders themselves; as has so often happened in the past. You don’t have to speak to too many victims, or too many support organisations, to know that a child never forgets. Th is Royal Commission may indeed provide solace for victims of the past, but it should also pave the way for a much clearer, unblocked future when it comes to prevention and reporting of child sexual abuse.

The initiative was taken by Penrith City Council after complaints by parents who were concerned that children leaving school of an afternoon were breathing in smoke passively from parents having a cigarette near school entrances. “I think that school communities will benefit greatly from these signs as a gentle reminder not to smoke around children,” explained Penrith Mayor, Mark Davies. “When you look at the signs you can see they are family oriented and families are the ones using these areas the most. “The State Government has earmarked some areas where smoking near school grounds is an issue however there was a very positive response from a number of school headmasters where there is not an overt problem but the signs were embraced to raise awareness.” Rachel Brett, a teacher and mum of two young children, Adelle and Samuel, said that the signs are absolutely wonderful. “The kids’ Pop sometimes collects them from school of an afternoon and has spoken to me before about having to walk through the smoke,” she said. “Th is is a great way to educate parents and students.” And from a teacher’s perspective too, the signs complement drug education

o anybody who thinks CCTV cameras are a breach of privacy – I say wake up! They aren’t there to invade your personal space or to spy on you. Security cameras are a way of keeping you safe. A street with working cameras, being monitored by trained professionals, is a lot safer to walk on than one that isn’t. I mean heaven forbid the worst did happen – wouldn’t you rather someone be watching and call for help immediately? Police could be on the scene helping you and arresting the offender before you even have time to pull out your phone and call triple zero. To me it goes back to the same old theory that if you aren’t doing anything wrong they won’t get you into trouble and if you are assaulting someone well you deserve to be arrested. Th is week I did an experiment – I walked a kilometre down George Street in the city and was spotted on nine different cameras. When I walked the same distance along Sussex Street, the next one over, I was only seen once. To me, as a woman, knowing I never left the operator’s sight on George Street is a massive comfort. A way of protecting myself. Officers told me the cameras often also provide crucial evidence in investigations – both proving and

disproving allegations, because number one the camera doesn’t lie and number two unlike a person’s memory the details don’t fade over time. When a shop or business is robbed the fi rst thing police do is ask if there are CCTV cameras fitted in the store. Those images are then released to the media to launch a public appeal for help. Police say it’s through these images that hundreds of crimes are solved each year. Assaults or robberies that may have otherwise proved too difficult. I can assure you after being in the control room this week the operators are far too busy to be sitting there watching you simply walk down a street – they are flat out trying to monitor more than a dozen screens. And none of the vision is kept or sent to YouTube – if it’s not requested by police or a member of the public it’s deleted after 28 days. So this weekend if you are heading into the city and plan on having a few drinks PLEASE walk the route with the cameras – you never know, it may just stop you being injured or worse.

People from across the Penrith area showed their generosity once again last weekend as they banded together in support of McHappy Day, raising money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Initial tallies indicate the charity day raised over $3 million on the weekend. Th is year the event was once again a huge success and saw thousands of people fi lter through local McDonald’s stores.

When the Weekender went to take photos of the Lions Club members outside the Centro shopping centre on Wednesday, we and the members were asked to move off Centro’s property. But with any luck the Lions Club hope to have the raffle back for next Christmas. “You never know what might happen and we would love to do it again next year,” Mr Jeffery said.

Some remain defiant, but it appears the humble video store is on the way out

ideo stores were once a one-stop shop for family entertainment. You could pick up a couple of videos, a bag of popcorn and all you had to remember was rewind the tape after you watch it. These days, thanks to new technologies like movie kiosks, Foxtel Box Office and iTunes, video stores are a thing of the past and are closing their doors at a rapid rate. One local store attempting to buck consumer trends and get people back into the traditional way of hiring movies is Civic Video, South Penrith. Owner George Vatis said the most important strength a video store has is being able to service the whole market. “The beauty of what we offer is if you don’t know exactly what you want, come in and have a look – it’s a social experience,” he said. “Video stores give families the ability to come in. Mum and dad will select something, a two-year-old can pick something and so can a 10-year-old. There is still an underlying desire for people to want to touch things.” Mr Vatis, who has owned the Southlands-based store since 1996, admitted the industry, as a whole, was suffering and that Penrith was once a very competitive market. “Are we seeing stores close? Yes, but our store is doing okay,” he said. “In Penrith alone there were video stores in Glenmore Park, Werrington, Emu

Plains – it was by far the most competitive area I’ve known in the industry. I’ve never known a suburb with more stores represented anywhere in Australia.” One aspect that does concern Mr Vatis and his business the most is movie piracy. Movie piracy costs the industry billions of dollars each year. With faster download speeds and high-quality reproductions it’s only going to continue to steal away the market unless stricter penalties are enforced. “Piracy worries me the most,” Mr Vatis said. “With movie kiosks and Foxtel we can make a solid business argument and we can say we can compete against that. But when you talk about piracy, how can you make a solid business case against it?” General Manager of Civic Video Australia, Rod Laycock, agreed, saying business was tougher than what it used to be and that the physical product is still very much in demand. “DVD and Blu-Ray is still as popular as it’s ever been. Foxtel is a great service but some people don’t like subscriptions and that’s where the local video store comes into its own,” he said. A spokesperson from one of Civic Video’s modern day competitors, Hoyts Kiosks (formerly known as Oovie), said research suggests that more and more consumers are switching to the vending machine format. “As video stores continue to shut down locations, Hoyts Kiosk will continue to invest to expand our DVD Kiosk footprint,” the spokesperson said.

“As long as Hoyts Kiosk is the largest provider of low-cost DVD/Blu-Ray discs, we will have the advantage of being the last company standing in the physical rental space.” Mr Laycock disagreed and said movie kiosks had their disadvantages.

Assault of former partner: An Emu Plains man has plead guilty to assaulting his former partner after a dispute. About 1pm on October 16, the victim and the offender became involved in an argument over belongings that needed to be cleared from a property. No conviction recorded: A man has escaped serious penalty after being caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.096 (mid range) after an afternoon at the pub. At 2.13pm on Sunday, September 9, the man left the local pub and was pulled over just 100 metres down the road for a roadside breath test. The 36-year-old man recorded a positive reading and was charged with mid-range drink driving. However, the man previously had a perfect driving record spanning 19 years and was proven to be of exceptional character as a volunteer in the community. Because of his exceptional community involvement and previously perfect driving record, and because the man completed the traffic offenders program and entered an early guilty plea, he was let off with a good behaviour bond of 12 months and no recorded conviction.

Speeding drink driver: A 53-year-old man has had his licence suspended for six months after being caught speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. About 9.35pm on October 1 (the long weekend), the man was driving along the Great Western Highway, Blaxland, when police, who were performing a speed enforcement operation, recorded the man at a three second interval travelling 97km/h and 94km/h in a 60km/h zone. Police stopped the man and conducted a breath test which also returned positive. He was arrested and recorded a breath analysis of 0.062. His licence has been suspended for six months for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h and for drink driving and he was fi ned $400 and $83 in court fees.

Collections boosted over busy Christmas holiday period

orth Ward Councillor, Marcus Cornish, has welcomed the announcement by Penrith City Council that residents will have additional waste services scheduled for the Christmas period after lobbying Council staff for some time over the issue. Currently, residents on the three bin system have organic waste collected weekly with collection of other waste and recyclables alternating. At the Ordinary Council Meeting on October 15, Cr Cornish requested that waste services over Christmas be examined because the usual system of alternating the collection of red waste bins and yellow recycling bins would not likely handle the increased waste levels from the festive season. “After discussions with Council staff, Council has agreed to weekly collection of the red waste bins and the yellow recycle bins for five consecutive weeks from Monday, December 10 to Friday, January 11, 2013,” Cr Cornish explained. Th is is in addition to the routine weekly green lidded bin collection service, which will continue as normal. The collections will take place on the normal collection day for all residents. A Council spokesperson said that these temporary festive season pick ups will be effective in meeting Penrith households’ needs as Council recognises the greater amounts of waste and recycling produced around Christmas.

Marcus Cornish is glad residents will have better access to waste services over Christmas.

“Council is proud to support our community’s outstanding environmental responsibility; in particular their waste sorting efforts which see our environment and neighbourhoods reap long term benefits,” said Penrith Mayor, Mark Davies. “Thanks to the Penrith community’s winning attitude we’re also in the running this month for a national Keep Australia Beautiful award for most sustainable city. It’s another golden opportunity for our residents to be recognised as leaders in sustainability.”

Council has created a text messaging service to remind residents of their weekly waste services and other rubbish collection initiatives. Both Cr Cornish and Cr Davies encourage residents to register. Councillor Davies said: “Remember to sign up for our free text message reminder service by emailing rrr@ penrithcity.nsw.gov.au with your name, address and mobile number so you can keep track of dates for extra collections, recycling drop off days and other waste service initiatives”.

POLICE SNAPSHOT Robbery: Victim uninjured in attack Police are investigating a robbery incident which occurred in Albert Street, Werrington on Sunday. About 12pm a 42-year-old female attended a unit block located at 34-38 Albert Street as part of her employment as a support worker. About this time she was approached by a male in the stairwell who attempted to take the victim’s hand bag. The offender then made certain threats resulting in the victim handing over a sum of money and personal items. Police attended and established a crime scene. The victim was not injured. The offender is described as: male, Caucasian appearance, about 175cm in height, medium build, wearing a black hooded jacket, brown t-shirt, blue jeans, white joggers and a face covering. Police act immediately: Licence suspended About 1.50am on Sunday, November 11, Highway Patrol Police were patrolling Roper Road, Colyton when they detected a white Volkswagon transport vehicle being driven at excessive speed. Police pursued the vehicle for a short distance before stopping in Hewitt Street, Colyton. Police will allege that the 24-year-old driver from Colyton was driving at not less than 106km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Police are seeking information in relation to a fi re at towing premises in Cox Avenue, Kingswood in the early hours of Saturday, November 10. About 1.40am witnesses observed the Cox Avenue premises to be alight. A short time later, NSW Fire and Rescue attended and extinguished the fi re. Police attended and a crime scene was then established. The fi re is believed to have been deliberately lit. During the incident a white Holden Commodore VK model (Peter Brock model) was stolen from the premises. Police are urging members of the public who have information in relation to the incident, or know the whereabouts of the stolen vehicle, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Graffiti hits the streets Council acts quickly to remove graffiti time and time again

raffiti has often disgraced the city of Penrith but a new type of graffiti has literally hit the streets of Orchard Hills. Earlier this year it was anonymously reported to Council that a person had been spray painting offensive pictures and writing on the road surface of Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills. Council responded with much haste to cover over the images and, when the writing returned a second time, Council covered over that, too. Months later, in late October, Council reportedly received another anonymous tip-off that there had been a third case of graffiti on the road surface in Orchard Hills, this time in close proximity to a school. “Graffiti is an unsightly scourge that costs Penrith ratepayers $530,000 to remove. Th is is money that the community and Council would prefer to be able to put toward more positive things for the community,” said a spokesperson from Penrith City Council. “Graffiti is a problem everywhere. Council has a three-pronged graffiti minimisation strategy in place, which comprises removal, enforcement and education.” Not only does graffiti cost the community but it is also against the law and can even see perpetrators sent to prison. “The offences that people can be

charged with are destroying or damaging property under the Crimes Act, which carries five years imprisonment,” said a spokesperson from Penrith Police. “The Graffiti Control Act provides

penalties for offences like possessing graffiti equipment which can carry a six month custodial sentence and there are also now provisions to lose your drivers licence.”

The most recent graffiti in Orchard Hills was removed earlier this month. Report any graffiti to Council’s hotline on 1800 022 182 and if you see someone in the act ring local police.

he Northern Road is a major route for Penrith residents travelling to Campelltown and Liverpool but significant upgrades to the road may impact commuters, particularly in the Badgery’s Creek, Wallacia and

Luddenham region. The State Government is calling for feedback on the revised concept design and review of environmental factors for an upgrade of the Northern Road between Mercy Road, Bringelly and Old Northern

Road, Narellan. “The Northern Road is an important road for traffic between Penrith and Campelltown, and is used by many trucks and transport vehicles,” she said. “I encourage Penrith residents and businesses to provide feedback on the revised concept designs.” Consultation closes November 30.

The Federal Government will be happy to expand their budget surplus with the Penrith City Council set to return a significant amount of funds that had been set aside for the Penrith Managed Aquifer Recharge Project. In 2010, then Minister for Climate Change, Penny Wong, advised Penrith City Council of the Australian Government’s commitment to provide $1,981,000 to see the development of a pilot scheme that would see recycled water used for the irrigation of sporting ovals and some industrial uses. However, the project has been shelved by Council because there is not enough commercial interest to make the project economically viable and so the funds will be returned to the Federal Government. Council has resolved to revisit the project on a regular basis to eventually garner enough support.

Power out: Truck crash causes big drama in St Marys spokesperson said. “When we attempted to supply those 500 customers with power, the feeder that we were using tripped and that impacted the supply to another 400 customers.” The Station Street Plaza alone saw 20 businesses close down for the day after they were forced to evacuate all customers and employees. “Our main concern was to evacuate everybody before the emergency lighting and exit signs went out,” said Ben Finger, Centre Manager at Station Street Plaza. “The evacuation went very smoothly.”

Storm causes chaos Trees down as rain, hail and wind lashes local area

massive storm uprooted trees, cut power and left local residents rattled late last week, with wind gusts of more than 100km/h rocking Penrith. The late afternoon storm last Thursday came with very little warning and brought with it heavy rain, hail and forceful winds. Most suburbs in the Penrith Local Government Area were hit, but the worst affected areas appeared to be St Marys, Cambridge Park and Werrington. Numerous trees around the area came down during the storm, some onto cars and houses. In one incident, a man was trapped for nearly an hour in a car on Oxford Street at Cambridge Park after high voltage power lines fell on his vehicle while he was inside. Th roughout the storm, local residents turned to social media – including The Western Weekender’s Facebook page – to stay informed on the latest developments. “A hole in the ceiling inside Station Plaza in St Marys burst open directly above a recent new bakery business,” one Weekender reader said. “There’s a tree down at the Cambridge Park shops and a huge gum tree also down on College Street, missed the guy in his car by inches, got his rear tail guard,” said another. The Penrith State Emergency Service responded to many calls for help, mainly

Medical marvels: Funding announced for key projects ver $100,000 of medical grants were announced at the Nepean Medical School last Friday by the Nepean Medical Research Foundation for projects that have the potential to make significant inroads into the understanding of complex medical conditions. The Foundation received 16 applications asking for a total of $250,000 and through their fundraising efforts managed to choose eight projects and

give a total of $117,000 to the researchers. The largest grant of a value of $20,000 went to researchers Christopher Vida and Liu Wei to fund a new piece of equipment that can be used to examine cell biology, for example, the introduction of new genes to a cell. Another project will look at how things that happen to a fetus might impact that human’s health later in life. “The calibre of research being done in this region is inspiring, as was reflected in the quality and breadth of this year’s applications,” said Foundation President, Brad Turnbull.

Local dance school takes home multiple prizes at national championships enrith is full of talented students but one local performing arts school has shown the nation that they are on top. In only its second year of competition, Emu Plains performing arts school, You Can Dance, entered over 100 of its students into the recent AASCF National Cheer and Dance Competition and came out with amazing success. The competition, the biggest cheerleading and dance competition in Australia, took place in late October and saw over 4,400 competitors from over 400 clubs in Australia battle to be the national champions in a number of different dance and cheer categories. You Can Dance entered students into Jazz, Hip Hop, Cheer Stunt groups and Cheerleading team events and were crowned national champions in junior stunt group levels 1 and 2 and senior cheer level 1, as well as in the junior and senior hip hop dance sections. “I am beyond thrilled with our results this year – AASCF Nationals is the biggest and best cheer and dance competition in Australia and for our students to have gained such results was exceptional and proves we are on the right track with our training,” said studio owner, Jane Houlihan. “We have amazing staff, talented and motivated students, a great cheer and dance program in our school as well as a brilliant support base in our parents,” she

The competition asked attractive men to do something a little out of the ordinary â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to perform the full monty on stage at the Grill Teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Night Out Show in Castle Hill last week. Mr Smith, who works as a construction estimator for Clarendon Homes, decided to enter after a bit of peer pressure. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My brother in law said he was going to enter me, so I thought about it and

decided to just bite the bullet and enter and I guess it sort of paid off in the end.â&#x20AC;? Mr Smith was one of a handful of men chosen to perform on the night with just one training session and dress rehearsal to prepare them. Though Mr Smith admits they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dress rehearsals for long: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We started with our clothes on but that changes pretty quickly in the showâ&#x20AC;?. The audience of cheering women were given the opportunity to choose the winner of the Girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Night Out. Mr Smith, who is single, walked away with $1,000 prize money for his performance and said he would even do it again.

Plan to house historic wagons at Mamre House dumped as debate continues

he Bennett Wagons are one of St Marys’ most important cultural heritage items but for many years, two of the publicly owned wagons have been in storage at Penrith City Council’s nursery. A third currently sits on display in South Creek Park in St Marys. But the wagons may become the centrepiece of an historical park in St Marys after the future of the wagons was debated at Council on Monday night. Council staff provided a report back to Councillors on different options for displaying the wagons and recommended that all three wagons be relocated to Mamre Homestead – a view at odds with the St Marys and District Historical Society, who believe the wagons should all be housed at South Creek Park. The report stated that: “The Mamre House site provides a 19th or early 20th rural farm setting that is related to the use of the wagons in past times... Mamre House is the most suitable option”. Addressing Councillors though, President of the St Marys and District Historical Society, Caroline Volkiene, said that despite some of the group’s members being seventh generation St Marys residents who hold considerable historical knowledge of the area, they were not consulted by Council staff. “We hold serious concerns about the report and its recommendation to house the Bennett Wagons at Mamre House... the

wagons were not [even] farm wagons, they were road wagons,” she said. Fellow Historical Society member, Norma Thorburn, said that the Bennett Wagons belong in St Marys. “It would be far better to house the Bennett Wagons in South Creek Park, St Marys, where the wagons were actually built,” she said. “South Creek Park is close to public transport and schools and shops so is

accessible.” Councillors agreed that South Creek Park is the best site for the wagons and resolved that the wagons be housed in an enclosure sympathetic to the existing structure. “I personally am quite disappointed in this report and suggest that a further report be brought back to Council on the possibility of establishing an historical park at St Marys,” Cr Ross Fowler said.

“The wagons should be housed in South Creek Park and Council should look at funding schemes to build the facility.” The Bennett wagons were built by the Bennett family, headed by James William Bennett and his two sons, who combined their trades as blacksmiths and wheelwrights to specialise in the construction of wagons in the 1880’s and became renowned for their crafts across the nation.

The St Marys-based facility shut down their indoor swimming centre in May to complete multi-million dollar renovations before summer begins. Greg Crawford, General Manager of Ripples, said the new complex will be used for a number of different purposes. “It will certainly be used for general

kids play but it will also be used for lap swimming as well as to hold our large and extensive Learn to Swim program,” he said. There have been a number of noticeable changes to the pool. “During the upgrade we fi xed some structural issues with the pool but also completed a new concourse, new colour scheme, a refurbished café as well as new water features including a big tippy bucket, a water umbrella and a crazy pole,” Mr Crawford said. On November 24, Ripples will be holding a big grand opening day.

The Australian Pedal Car Club held one of its Swap, Meet, and Display days at the shire hall, Luddenham last Sunday. The event saw 32 pedal cars, planes and vehicles on display and attracted many members of the public. President of the Australian Pedal Car Club, John Hudson, has been with the

club for 12 years and has a wide selection of pedal cars in his private collection. “Quite often people have owned pedal cars but throw them away – [the cars] get dents or they lose interest,” he said. “Collecting pedal cars is a great hobby to have. There is no rego, no insurance and once they are restored, you just give it a polish and off you go.” Over the years, the club has grown from the original six members to now over 40 members Australia-wide. The next Swap, Meet and Display day will be held in Luddenham on April 21, 2013.

O’Malley gets on well with the cats and kittens here and isn’t worried about the dogs at all.

Knick Knack loves her daily walks and walks well on the lead. She is good with other small dogs but will bark at bigger dogs. She will also bark and chase cats so will only be re-homed to a cat free household.

O’Malley is a good eater with both wet and dry food and is litter trained. Currently he uses a cat flap to come and go as he pleases during the door but is strictly indoors at night.

Knick Knack is toilet trained, travels well in the car and doesn’t mind a bath. A vet check up has her in wonderful health for a 16 year old dog.

Take a leap: Here’s your chance to invest in Penrith’s new sky-diving centre!

wo former Special Air Services (SAS) members are building Australia’s fi rst major indoor skydiving facility right on our doorstep at Penrith Panthers entertainment complex. Indoor Skydive Australia (ISA), founded by SAS Sergeants Wayne Jones and Danny Hogan, is raising $12 million through a sharemarket float to build an 11 metre high vertical wind tunnel at Panthers. The tunnel will be one of the largest in the world, able to have eight skydivers in a

simulated freefall at one time. The facility will trade under the international iFly brand, and is planned to open in late 2013. iFly is part of the SkyVenture group, which operates 24 proven and successful indoor skydiving facilities around the world. The facility will be used to train military parachutists and civilian skydiving teams as well as providing an exciting adrenaline ride for anyone – from action-sports enthusiasts to children’s birthday parties

and corporate team building function days. Wayne and Danny were helped in setting up their dream by SAS Sergeant Blaine Diddams, who was killed in combat in Afghanistan earlier this year. Blaine’s uncle John Diddams is on the board of ISA. Former Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie has been appointed as the chairman of ISA Group. The board also has significant corporate and start-up experience, with PIPE Networks founder Stephen Baxter serving

as a non-executive director. Development of the facility has been fully approved by Penrith City Council and construction is anticipated to start on fi nancial close in December 2012. The facility will be adjacent to the main entrance of the Penrith Panthers Leagues Club, which has 140,000 members and is about to begin an $850 million redevelopment of the precinct. The initial public offer of shares is anticipated to raise $12million to construct the facility and for initial working capital, by the issue of 60 million shares at 20cents each. The offer is now open and will close on November 30. ISA plans to list under the ASX code IDZ – for Indoor Drop Zone. ISA will be holding an information evening at Penrith Panthers on Wednesday, November 21 at 7pm for anyone interested in getting involved and investing. The Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) is pleased to host a Business Forum on Innovation on 23rd November to explore how the business landscape is changing in a digital economy and the role of innovation in such a transformation. orget what you learned in those management books. Management books have it all wrong. They all try to tell you how to manage “people”. It’s impossible to manage “people”, it’s only possible to manage individuals. And because individuals differ from one another, what works with one individual may not work with somebody else. Some individuals thrive on public praise, others feel uncomfortable when singled out. Some individuals are all about the money, others thrive on challenging assignments. Some individuals need mentoring, others fi nd advice to be grating. The trick is to manage individuals the way that THEY want to be managed, rather than the way that YOU prefer to manage. The only way to do this is to ASK. In your fi rst (or next) meeting with each employee ask: • How do you prefer to be managed? • What can I do to help you excel? • What types of management annoy you? Listen (really listen) to the response and then, as far as you are able to, adapt your coaching, motivation, compensation, and so forth to match that individual’s needs. A savvy employee won’t wait for you to ask; he or she will tell you outright what works. When this happens, you’re crazy not to take that employee’s advice! Unfortunately, most individuals aren’t that bold, which is why it’s up to you to fi nd out how to get the best out of them. And you’ll never get that out of a management book. Like this column? s women in business, we read and hear many negative statistics and realities, such as: • Only four per cent of Fortune 500 companies are run by women • There is still a 17 per cent pay gap between men and women • Women are severely under-represented in decision making positions in governments While it is good to aim to improve those statistics, and improve the circumstances of women in general, the focus needs to shift. Instead of feeling like the underdog with enormous obstacles to overcome, be thankful to be a woman in business. Why? Because in most industries, you will stand out from the crowd. And you should use that to your advantage. Every business struggles with a marketing angle that will be memorable and different from everyone else. So use your uniqueness to propel your business forward. Instead of being worried about being different and therefore ‘not attractive’ to prospects, be confident in your differences. Show people that although you might not be the norm, you can exceed their expectations. Although we have many more female role models these days from which to draw inspiration, it can still be tempting to operate the way our male counterparts do. But aside from doing things the ‘same old way’, more often than not, you will be going against your natural tendencies. The only way to really succeed in business is to stand out from the crowd, in the most positive sense!

earning how to manage your time effectively is one of the most important skills you can master in running a successful business. Most small business people spend far too much time doing things that don’t have to be done or can be done by somebody else. We all waste time on minor things every now and then. The key is to prioritise the tasks at hand and then allocate the available time accordingly. Most small business owners, particularly in their formative years, survive by crisis management. Just as one problem is remedied, another one pops up. So how do you fi nd enough time in the day to do all the things that need to be done? Many overcome the problem by working longer hours but the secret lies in prioritising the available time. I personally start most days with a list of tasks that need completing, then simply prioritise the importance of each and start with the most important. It’s not always that easy but it gives me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. I also keep diaries; an electronic one for client appointments and a physical one for tasks and notes. I don’t have email access to my phone because it is too time consuming. I’m not saying my way is best practice but it seems to keep me at a happy medium. Make sure every job you do maximises your abilities and skills. Don’t be afraid to delegate to ensure the bulk of your time is spent on things that are going to provide the best dollar returns for the business. Of all the gardens in Penrith, there are a select few that rise above the rest however, in the Western Weekender’s Penrith’s Best Garden Competition, there could only be one winner and the Putra’s garden was the obvious choice. The two of them built their garden from clay and rubble into the “Shangri La in Penrith” that it is today but no matter how much she protests, Mr Putra assures us that it is his wife who has put in the hard yards. “It was just a house with clay and prickly bushes but when Gail sets her mind to

something, it happens, one way or the other. Gail has this creative flair and when I try to help, I tend to be a nuisance,” said Mr Putra. “Gail is a wonderfully creative gardener who is so talented that I believe if she put a pencil in the ground it would grow into a tree,” he said. The garden can be found in the heart of Glenmore Park however, when you step outside you could be anywhere in the world and walking around the property is very much like an adventure. There are paths twisting through the dense vegetation, that have been thoroughly explored by the couple’s grandchildren, which lead to Koi ponds, hanging pots and climbing roses as far as the eye can see. There are beautiful flowers and gigantic trees

stretching out over large grassed areas and the garden is home to many different wildlife species including a colony of frogs living in the small lake on the property. Both Mr and Mrs Putra have their own favourite parts of the garden but they both agree that they wouldn’t want it any other way. “We love it here. We have gone on holidays many times but it is really hard to fi nd a place like home,” they agreed. 18 years is a long time to be working on a garden but here at the Western Weekender, we think that it is fair to say that all that hard work deserves to be rewarded; congratulations! Water the weight-loss wonder Q. I’ve heard that just drinking more water can help you lose weight. Is that true? A. It sounds too good to be true, but it really works. Water truly is the magic potion in weight loss. It also reduces fluid retention, flushes toxins from our bodies and gives us energy. And it’s free! So how does it help us lose weight? Water naturally suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolise stored fat. Studies have shown that not drinking enough water causes an increase in fat deposits, while drinking more water can actually reduce fat deposits. The overweight person needs more water than the thin one. Larger people have larger metabolic loads. Since we know that water is the key to fat metabolism, it follows that the overweight person needs more water. Drinking enough water is the best treatment for fluid retention. When the body gets less water, it perceives this as a threat to survival and begins to hold on to every drop. Water is stored in extracellular spaces (outside the cells). Th is shows up as swollen feet, legs and hands. Water helps to maintain proper muscle tone by giving muscles their natural ability to contract and by preventing dehydration. It also helps to prevent the sagging skin that usually follows weight loss. Shrinking cells are buoyed by water, which plumps the skin and leaves it clear, healthy and

these modern conditions, not natural saturated fats. Humans need saturated fats because we are warm blooded. Our bodies do not function at room temperature, but at a tropical temperature. Saturated fats provide the appropriate stiff ness and structure to our cell membranes and tissues. When we consume a lot of liquid unsaturated oils, our cell membranes do not have structural integrity to function properly, they become too “floppy”, and when we consume a lot of trans fat, which is not as soft as saturated fats at body temperature, our cell membranes become too “stiff ”. Contrary to the accepted view, which is not scientifically based, saturated fats do not clog arteries or cause heart disease. It’s your money – claim it back!

uring winter, we tend to go into exercise hibernation but now that the sun is out and the weather is warm, we are feeling a little more motivated to hit the gym or go for a run. Exercising is hardly a time when we feel our most fashionable and to be honest, I have never seen exercise as a time to think about what I am wearing. When I exercise, my face goes red, I sweat up a storm and I am generally looking my absolute worst, which is why my main concern with my gym wear is comfort. I always look for clothes that are baggy, that breathe and that cover up all the lumps and bumps that I may have under those clothes. However, I have noticed lately that it appears as though I have been wrong in choosing my gym wear based on comfort alone. I am not the kind of person that will go to the gym (I prefer to run out in the fresh air) but one glance through the window and I can see women walking on the treadmill in the shortest and tightest little shorts that you can imagine. There are men doing weights in the tightest singlets that show off every ripple in each perfectly, or in some cases not so perfectly, toned muscle. Here was I under the impression that skin tight clothing was reserved for sprinters and athletics stars but perhaps I am wrong, maybe it is the more comfortable than my baggy gym wear? For some people, exercise is about fitness and health but for others, fashion has begun to creep in as well. I highly doubt that skin tight shorts are comfortable but designers such as Lorna Jane have developed ranges of gym wear to give exercise a fashionable side. We all know that we make sacrifices for fashion (think of those stilettos you have), but I am yet to be convinced that comfort when exercising should be sacrificed. I do love fashion and I love to shop for the latest trends but I just can’t bring myself to put fashion and exercise on the same wavelength. I will continue to exercise in my baggy shorts and oversized t-shirt because gym wear should be about comfort!

Let’s start with super. It’s estimated that half of all Australians have lost super. If you’ve ever changed your name, address or job then it could be you. To fi nd out, simply go to the Australian Tax Office’s website at www. ato.gov.au and type ‘SuperSeeker’ into the search box. You can have a quick look for lost super by just using your Tax File Number, or you can get more in-depth information by registering some additional details. If you do fi nd lost super, you might want to consider consolidating your super funds to make it easier to track and to reduce the amount of fees you are paying. But before you do, speak to the super companies to see if you will incur any fees or forfeit any benefits by transferring these funds to another super account. You may wish to get professional fi nancial advice before proceeding. And it’s not just long-forgotten super money that has been left to gather dust. Many Australians also have unclaimed money from bank accounts, share dividends, life insurance policies, salaries, deceased estates, proceeds of sales and many other sources. The Australian Government’s Money Smart website has a page where you can search for unclaimed money. Simply go to: www.moneysmart.gov.au and type ‘fi nd unclaimed money’ into the search box. If you fi nd lost funds, the website will direct you through the process of lodging a claim to get the funds back. Don’t work hard for your money only to throw it away. Podiatry and Medicare – Let’s clear things up

very day in my practice we have people getting a little bit confused about what Medicare provides when it comes to private podiatry services. The reality is that Medicare provides services with private podiatrists for patients with a chronic (or terminal) medical condition and complex care needs. The system that this scheme falls under is called the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Program and is only available to those patients that qualify. The misconception by the general public is that podiatry is available to everyone under Medicare, however it is not. In fact the scheme is managed stringently by GPs who do a great job at providing the services to those who really need it and qualify under the EPC program. The most common patients that podiatrists see under the EPC program are those with diabetes. These patients are at risk of lower limb complications and require complex care of their feet. A podiatrist is able to assess the foot health status of these patients and report back to the GP or managing practitioner on the vascular and neurological status of the feet and lower limbs. If a patient qualifies for an EPC plan they will be entitled to up to five consultations between allocated allied health practitioners. Th is means that a GP can refer the patient to, for example a podiatrist for three visits and

a physiotherapist for two visits over a 12 month period. The difficulty for us podiatrists is that we generally need to see these patients more than five times a year and at a frequency rate much greater than that which patients are willing to attend. The take home message here is that only specific groups are entitled to the EPC. However those that do and attend Nepean Podiatry, can bulk bill it at our clinic, rather than have to line up at Medicare for a rebate.

The need for Vitamin D

here was great news this week that Sunscreens will now be allowed to be sold at a rating of SPF50+. Being sun smart is entirely justified in our country where skin cancer rates are among the highest in the world. It may then come as a great surprise that our sun blessed country has a chronic health problem which can be attributed to people not getting enough sun. Many Australians are now being diagnosed with low levels of Vitamin D. As the majority of our Vitamin D comes from sunlight, this could be due to the push to be sun smart and people spending more time indoors. Winter time creates an even greater challenge to get enough Vitamin D. So why do we need Vitamin D? Vitamin D is vital for normal development and growth of cells, bones and teeth as well as good immune function. Low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to Parkinson’s disease, obesity in children, asthma and heart disease. Th is deficiency may also be putting us at risk of diabetes, brittle bone disease and possibly some cancers. In the elderly, Vitamin D deficiency is often a factor in weak bones and muscle aches and pains. For pregnant women, lack of Vitamin D has been shown to cause problems with bone growth in

the unborn child. A busy lifestyle can also put you at risk of low Vitamin D – leaving for work early and arriving home after dark, especially during winter, can mean the average person may not be getting adequate levels of Vitamin D. The best way to get Vitamin D is from direct sunlight as it is very hard to get enough through your diet alone. Unfortunately a side effect of being sun smart and covering up means you may be missing out on the Vitamin D you need, so a balanced approach to sun exposure is necessary to avoid the risk of skin cancer. A good rule of thumb is to get out into the sunshine for at least 20 minutes a day and don’t wear SPF during this time. With shorter daylight hours and weaker sunshine in winter some people may need to look at alternatives to get the Vitamin D they need. Vitamin D3 supplements are widely available and quite inexpensive. A dosage of 1000IU of Vitamin D3 every day can help improve Vitamin D levels in the body. Finally taking Vitamin D with bone supplements helps the absorption of Calcium into the body, so this is something to keep in mind when choosing a bone supplement. Your doctor can organise a test for vitamin D levels and recommend the best treatment if necessary.

here is much anticipation and excitement for James Bond fans with the arrival of the new and 23rd Bond fi lm, ‘Skyfall’. Th is 23rd movie comes in the 50th Anniversary year of the fi rst Bond fi lm, ‘Dr No’ from way back in 1962. Who was your favourite 007? Sean Connery? Roger Moore? Pierce Brosnan? Perhaps the lesser known George Lazenby or Timothy Dalton? Maybe you prefer the latest Bond, the gritty, tougher, Daniel Craig. One thing is for sure, James Bond is as popular as ever with ‘Skyfall’ set to be the highest grossing Bond movie of all time! What is it about James Bond that makes him so popular? The movies are full of action and exotic locations. Usually, the story line is easy to follow. They are tense and exciting, with plenty of dry humour. There are the Bond girls and of course, the cool and calm James Bond always saves the day, rescuing the world from the latest power hungry megalomaniac! Do we admire him? Do we want to be like him? Do we wish we could live his life? Then again, perhaps it is all just good fun. With all this in mind, it is worth reflecting on the words of Jesus from the Bible’s New Testament gospel of John. Jesus said: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full... I am the good shepherd... I lay down my life for the sheep... I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish”.
