City Park to become “iconic” part of Penrith, says Fowler ALENA HIGGINS

I

t’s been talked about for years and is presently considered Penrith Council’s number one strategic priority, but doubts about City Park are still being voiced at the eleventh hour. During Council’s latest Ordinary Meeting – where a $1.58 million tender was awarded to bulldoze seven buildings and remediate the soil to make way for the park – Councillor Kevin Crameri again questioned the millions being poured into the project, contending the money could be better spent fixing roads. “The amount of millions of dollars that we have spent buying all of these buildings that we are going to demolish, the amount of rent we’re going to now no longer get... I believe we are spending a lot of money and we are going to be in severe debt to try and fix our roads in the next few years,” he said. However, Councillor Ross Fowler predicted the $12 million, 7,000 sqm park, to be established on the corner of Henry and Station streets, Penrith would be “iconic”. “A central park, a place where people

world, a central park is really a focal point for that community.” Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen agreed.

“We have to have a heart, we have to have somewhere where the community can come together and celebrate things like the Panthers’ Grand Final,” she said. “Memory Park is not big enough, the Triangle Park is good for the kids, but we really need somewhere where all our community can come together.” Councillor John Thain hoped the original strategy – which included a “significant building” on the edge of the park to activate the area – would be realised. This was in addition to Council’s plans to redevelop the nearby former Council Chambers site. “You need more people coming into it, you don’t want to it be a white elephant,” Cr Thain said. Council’s redevelopment of 131 Henry Street, which sits opposite City Park, aims to deliver 8,000 sqm of A-grade commercial space. City Park is expected to be completed in early 2023. The Development Application for 131 Henry Street is scheduled to be lodged later this year. Are you excited about City Park? Email news@westernweekender.com.au.

Time to axe social media trolls A few weeks ago I wrote a very strongly worded column about the COVID-19 vaccine and my thoughts on those refusing to get the jab. It sparked a mountain of feedback – emails, calls, social media posts and even the odd snail mail letter. Plenty of it was positive, but of course a big chunk wasn’t – and that’s totally fine. When I sit down to write this column each week, I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. That’s the very point of an opinion column – here’s a perspective, do with it what you will. I’m used to nasty emails, social media posts and calls about columns and stories. It goes with the territory and I’m fortunate, I guess, in that it doesn’t really bother me that much. That vaccination column also made me realise just how much the misinformation campaign has infiltrated the vaccine push, particularly through social media. And it was social media that sparked a fresh round of ‘feedback’ this week. I tweeted that, in my view, the story about Penrith breaking the NRL trophy and the carry-on afterwards was a complete overreaction and farce, especially after it was revealed the break was totally innocent, was a previous weld giving away and cost church change to fix. Some people had the opposite view. Again, all good. Others, well, they amplified my fears that social media is getting worse, not better, when it comes to abuse, vitriol and bullying. “Tell that to Norm you arrogant prick with a stick up your ass,” said one friendly person in reply, referring to the late Norm Provan, immortalised in the trophy.

Index

“The social media giants say they’re serious about tackling these issues but it feels like the horse has bolted”

A bloke called Andrew Scotland replied: “Look at how stupid your fat head looks.” He probably has a point, but still, maybe not the time and place. That vaccine column sparked worse, of course. To the point where people were finding years-old photos on my private Instagram account, and leaving offensive comments. I got abusive messages on Facebook too, including some from America. No, we haven’t started delivering the Weekender internationally but that’s how these movements work – they post links in forums and groups and then encourage a social media pile-on. Most of the comments were about my weight or that fat head again, because when they don’t have a solid argument, these people get personal. I say again, this stuff doesn’t bother me personally all that much and I understand it’s part of the job. But it certainly got me thinking about the crisis society is facing when it comes to social media.

News.............................................1-26 Health Experts.........................27 Emergency Experts...........28

The comments I receive would be nothing compared to people with much higher status, especially women. And this week The Daily Telegraph reported that the number of bashings committed at NSW public schools involving girls has hit a 20-year high. Attacks by female students have increased by 4.6 per cent year-on-year over the past two decades, hitting a record high of 243 this past year. NSW Secondary Principals’ Council president Craig Petersen said he believed the surge in violence reflected the deteriorating mental health of teenage girls due to social media use. This growing problem is not going away. The social media giants say they’re serious about tackling these issues but it feels like the horse has bolted. On countless occasions I’ve reported Tweets or Facebook posts that clearly cross the line, or even reported obviously fake pages that are trying to rip people off, posing as legitimate organisations. More often than not, the response comes back that the report has been reviewed, and the community standards of the social media platforms had not been breached. What low standards they must have. It’s easy for older generations to tell those dealing with this today to just “turn off social media”, but it’s not that easy. Nor should it have to be the solution. But we do need to do something. In these past few weeks I experienced only a tiny speck of what others have to deal with on a daily basis. It’s enough to make me realise we’re way, way behind on even understanding this problem, let alone solving it.

Back in the classroom All smiles as students return to school for the first time in four months

E

lias Hatzimarkou was all smiles as he waved goodbye to his mother, Sarah Hatzimarkou, at the school gates on Monday morning. The five-year-old from Trinity Catholic Primary School in Kemps Creek was one of thousands of local Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 12 students that returned this week. Ms Hatzimarkou was relieved her son could resume proper classes after months of lockdown. “My husband and I were concerned when COVID hit about him having to do school from home, but we actually found Elias responded well to the one-on-one connection,” Ms Hatzimarkou said. “Even though he did well at home, I am not a teacher and being his mum he knew he could get away with things here and there, so he needed that face-to-face time again.” With COVID cases still in the community, there are some mixed feelings about allowing children back into classrooms, but Ms Hatzimarkou said the social impacts need to be weighed up against the risk. “Elias was so excited to go back and even

though the kids are really young, not being able to see their friends and teachers has really affected them socially,” she said. “The school was amazing with providing the education online and I know they will go above and beyond with COVID protocols to make sure our children and the teachers are safe.” Greeting students with bubbles, Trinity Principal Cathy Hey said it is like they never left. “There were a few little nervous kiddies but lots of excitement and, once they got past the gate, there was lots of smiles in the playground as they all greeted each other,” Ms Hey said. “Remote learning was challenging but we had great support from our parents and we are so happy to have the little ones back because teaching via Zoom is just not the same.” With teachers and high school students required to wear masks inside, learning will look different this year but is on track to get back to normal. “We have had to put a few procedures in place to meet the public health guidelines but if it means we can get people back safely we are fine with that,” Ms Hey said. “The other year groups return from next week, so it will all be as it should be.”

Penrith comes first for • West is key to NSW’s pandemic recovery • Penrith economy was hit hard EMILY FESZCZUK

S

tuart Ayres might be the new Deputy Leader of the NSW Liberal Party but home is where the heart is for this Penrith politician. The Penrith MP has a strong focus on repairing the damage done to western Sydney so it can take a leading role in the state’s pandemic recovery. With his new role a result of former Premier Gladys Berejiklian resigning at the start of the month, Mr Ayres told the Weekender he is still committed to delivering outcomes for the local community. “The circumstances were entirely unexpected and come with a tinge of sadness… I am incredibly thankful and respectful of my colleagues who put me into that role which is an immense privilege, and I know it comes with quite a significant amount of responsibility,” Mr Ayres said. “Not a single day goes by where I am not dealing with a Penrith issue, it is the foundation stone of the whole thing and the reason I am in public office is to improve the social and economic opportunities of my community.”

Stuart Ayres has recently been promoted to Deputy Liberal Leader in NSW.

COMMUNITY SPORT IS BACK! Community sport has been given the green light to return, whilst a raft of other restrictions have been eased after NSW reached the 80 per cent double dose vaccination target last weekend. Up to 20 visitors are now allowed in your home at any one time (visitor limits do not apply for children under the age of 12), while outdoor gatherings of up to 50 are permitted. And in a move set to spark an end to months of working from home for

Mr Ayres said Penrith should stand tall and proud as nearly 85 per cent of its community members are fully vaccinated and ready to get back to normal. “It’s fantastic that they listened to the direction of the Government, listened to the health advice, respected the science and rolled up their sleeves in overwhelming numbers,” he said. “The speed at which we were vaccinated once the supply was available just shows how dedicated the community is.” With safety still paramount as restrictions ease, getting western Sydney back to work is a priority for Mr Ayres and vital for economic recovery. “Western Sydney and Penrith has been disproportionately impacted as higher rates of infection meant more restrictions… by making these decisions we did damage parts of the economy in those areas so now the obligation is to work with those areas to allow them to recover faster” he said. “Western Sydney needs to be the engine that pulls the whole state back up to speed while we deliver on infrastructure and good quality social services because investment leads to jobs.”

many, masks are no longer required in office environments. Drinking while standing up at the pub is now permitted again, while there’s no caps on the number of people who can attend weddings and funerals. Masks are still required within retail environments and other indoor facilities. The eased restrictions are for fully vaccinated people only with the unvaccinated still waiting until December 1 to enjoy their freedom.

a local MP on the rise by harsh restrictions • Why Ayres believes Liberals will win next election While the pandemic put a halt to a lot of things, Mr Ayres said he is excited to continue delivering projects for Penrith. “I am really looking forward to seeing the first stage of Nepean Hospital open and the starting of stage two which will be a complete game changer in the provision of health services,” he said. “We will pick up the widening of Northern Road in stages until it is dual carriageway all the way to Narellan and then we will move to Mulgoa Road, which we already completed the section under the railway bridge that has improved traffic flow massively.” As the 2023 State Election draws closer, Mr Ayres is not deterred by his ultra marginal seat and is placing his whole focus on his constituents. “People will often make comments on margins but I think people vote on performance and record and I feel this is actually a pretty middle ground seat,” Mr Ayres said. “I am looking forward to the challenge over the next year and a bit and will be going into the election much more focused on delivering our commitments to the community and getting people back in

Time to focus on west Labor wants more shovels in the ground to help rebuild our local economy EMILY FESZCZUK

ondonderry MP Prue Car believes that western Sydney residents are the real heroes of the pandemic and need to be made a priority by the State Government. As Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Ms Car and Labor are calling on the government to commit to the community with sustainable support and projects to kickstart the economy. As restrictions ease, Ms Car told the Weekender that locals played a pivotal role in lifting lockdown for greater Sydney. “I think firstly we are in this position of being able to open up due to high vaccination rates of places like Penrith that have done enormously well,” Ms Car said. “Our region copped it the most but when it came to responding to the call to get vaccinated we did the best as we were itching to get out of lockdown.” With the area that was hit hard during lockdown now getting back to business, Ms Car said there needs to be a focus on investment and recovery. “There is no doubt some parts of Sydney

rior to the pandemic, loyal cruise fans Joshua Hendriks and Dannielle Morgan would have been first down the gangway to enjoy a holiday on the open seas. After not being able to cruise for nearly two years, the St Clair couple are calling for the State and Federal Government to agree to a roadmap for the resumption of domestic cruising. The pair, who have gone on multiple cruises, love the whole experience and even got engaged on P&O’s Pacific Explorer in February 2019. “We have done one cruise each by ourselves and then three together and we just love that you unpack once and are instantly on holiday with no hassle like lining up in airports,” Ms Morgan said. “Every day is full of activities and entertainment and you never get bored. We also love seeing the variety of destinations.” Cruise connoisseurs, Mr Hendriks said the duo appeared in the Fly the Flag for P&O Live virtual event last week to share their experiences.

“It was exciting to be able to help get the word out about why cruising should resume,” Mr Hendriks said. “The 45 minute show made it feel like we were back on board with all the friendly staff. “ Ms Morgan said the cruise ship industry and customers could return safely. “We think a strict hygiene program has to be followed with rapid testing at the terminal to ensure the safety of all crew and passengers,” she said. “We believe all Australian cruise companies will do everything in their power to protect their customers and crew and we cannot wait to cruise again.” NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet told media last week that the State and Federal Government are currently in discussions regarding the restart of the cruising industry. P&O Cruises Australia President, Sture Myrmell said that the company had extended its pause in operations for cruises until mid-January next year but hoped that they would have clarification soon. “Governments have made it very clear that vaccination thresholds are the key

WORK TO BEGIN ON NEW TEMPORARY BUS INTERCHANGE Transport for NSW will start work to install a new temporary bus interchange in the existing Veness Place car park this month as part of early work for the new St Marys metro station, part of Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport. The new temporary bus interchange will replace the existing bus interchange on Station Street.

The St Marys Bus Interchange needs to be relocated from its current position on Station Street, as it sits in an area that will be used during construction of the new St Marys metro station. The new temporary bus interchange will deliver a loop road, three bus stands with shelters, a safety median island, pedestrian safety fencing, a bus driver facility,

and at least 35 short term car parking spaces. Transport for NSW will start by establishing a site compound before demolition work begins. The kiss and ride will be moved from Queen Street to Nariel Street and the taxi rank will be moved from Station Street to Queen Street.

CHANGES TO CHECK-IN APP Local residents can now integrate the COVID-19 digital vaccination certificate into their Service NSW app. “This is an extra digital service to make life easier for local businesses and customers as we open back up. NSW is the first jurisdiction in Australia to roll out an integrated QR code solution for displaying vaccination status State wide,” Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said. “When someone visits a venue, they’ll be able to show their green check-in tick and vaccination status simultaneously, saving staff and customers time.” To link your certificate: • Ensure your Federal MyGov account is linked to Medicare. • Download the Express Plus Medicare app and sign in with your MyGov account details. • Select ‘Proof of vaccinations’ and then ‘View history’. • Select ‘Share with check in app’ and then ‘Service NSW’.

Sexual offence complainants, domestic violence complainants and other vulnerable witnesses will be empowered to give their best evidence in court thanks to a new remote witness room under construction at Penrith Courthouse. State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the project, part of $9 million in COVID-19 Commonwealth stimulus funding, includes installation of a state-of-the-art audio visual (AVL), and an upgraded and more secure safe room. “It is heartening to see our community benefit from this investment, which will help vulnerable people feel safer to come to court,” Mr Ayres said. “These facilities give witnesses private and secure areas to prepare for court and to give their best evidence.” The works will also include upgrades of essential safety features, funded from the NSW Government’s $100 million Sustaining Critical Infrastructure Program.

For Lorraine and her husband Rob, moving to Thornton Park means enjoying their freedom, while knowing they have support if they ever need it. “Rob and I had never really considered retirement living before we visited Thornton Park. We thought we’d be in our home until the end. As soon as I walked in and saw the bright, spacious apartments, I said to Rob, “I could live here.” We thought about it for a short while and came back for a second look – by which time I was hooked. “From the moment we moved in, I felt comfortable. I love the social aspect of life here. It’s a wonderful feeling, being part of a community. It’s so nice knowing we’ll always have someone to talk to. “We have everything we need within easy distance – medical facilities, the hospital, shops and transport. We can walk to Penrith plaza and there are lovely places to stroll. One of the other things that really puts my mind at ease is that, if Rob or I got sick, there’s an aged care home onsite that’s really lovely. Knowing we have the option of additional support nearby, gives us real peace of mind.” If you’ve ever thought about retirement living, don’t hesitate to contact us for an information pack and to book your obligation-free tour. It just might be the best thing you ever do.

WHY WILL KITS CAN BE BAD NEWS Now and then, we get enquiries from people who instead of having us draft their Will, want us to review a Will Kit they have purchased from somewhere like the Post Office or online to make sure it has been completed correctly. Unfortunately, we almost always find errors. Will Kits are seen as a cheap alternative to having your document drafted by an appropriately qualified Solicitor, and usually take the form of a pre-filled template Will into which a person inserts their personal details and selects from a number of options as to how their Executors are to be appointed and/or how their Estate is to be distributed. The problem is, unless you understand what the many different paragraphs, options and different wordings mean, you are flying blind. For example, if you tick the wrong box when nominating an Executor you might end up with someone you never intended being in charge with executing your Will. We have seen clients in the past end up in far more precarious positions as a result of Will Kits gone bad. For example, in one scenario a husband has purchased a Will Kit from the Post Office and filled it out himself. He had assumed that irrespective of what was written in the Will Kit, his Estate would automatically pass to his wife, so all he needed to do was to write down what he wanted to do with his assets after his wife died – which was to leave it to his children in equal shares. Instead of ticking the box that said he wanted to leave his Estate to his wife in the first instance and to his children once both he and his wife were deceased, he essentially gave his whole Estate to his children immediately upon his death and left his wife out of his Will. Now, had the husband and wife owned

their assets jointly, there would have been a simple fix because the laws of co-ownership would have dictated that jointly owned assets pass to the wife irrespective of what was in the husband’s Will. However, as is often the case with older clients, the family home was held in the father’s name only. Technically speaking, this meant that the husband had left the family home in which his wife had lived for 50 years to his three children and completely left her out of his Will inadvertently. Three of the deceased’s four children saw that this was an obvious error and happily signed the family home over to their mum, but the fourth child was a harder nut to crack. Luckily we were able to convince the fourth child that the mother could approach the Court seeking rectification of the Will or making a family provision claim to retain the home, so the matter settled without the need for Court proceedings. Had the fourth child resisted however, and sought to enforce what was written in the home made Will, the Estate would have been exposed to tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs with no guarantee (but a very high likelihood) that the family home would have been returned to the mother. This is an extreme example, but as you can see Will Kits can be fraught with difficulty and the money you save now may be outstripped exponentially by the costs of rectifying any mistakes down the track. You should always have your Will prepared by an appropriately qualified Solicitor, even if you think your circumstances are simple. If you have questions about writing a Will, contact us today for an obligation free discussion to see if we can help.

Push for new walking track W

ith lockdown diminishing exercise options, walking became a saviour for many locals in recent months. It also highlighted the lack of natural walking tracks around St Marys, according to one Penrith Councillor. Councillor Robin Cook is calling on Council to establish a nature walk, suggesting it could start at Coachmans Park, follow South Creek and link up with the existing pathways along the perimeter of The Kingsway. “I’m getting a lot of feedback from the community during COVID about the lack of natural walking tracks around the St Marys area,” she said during a recent Council meeting. “If we look into the future with the metro going in, the higher density living that is going in around the CBD and also in the suburbs around the area as well, I think there is a need there which COVID has really showed up.” Council confirmed it was looking to enhance walking connectivity in the area. “As part of its forward planning and

green grid strategies, Council is looking to enhance walking connectivity within St Marys and to adjoining suburbs,” a Council spokesman said. “An existing shared path connects the town centre of St Marys to Penrith, with opportunities to link that further to Werrington Lake, The Kingsway and the Gipps Street precinct. “The Gipps Street Recreation precinct, a $23 million sports and recreation facility being delivered by Council, will have extensive nature walks that will connect the town centre of St Marys’ Queen Street via South Creek and The Kingsway.” Cr Cook, who suggested Council call upon the State Government’s WestInvest funding, also requested Council futureproof St Marys’ library. The Council spokesman said the need for a larger library has been identified, however the operational and capital costs to build a new library were not within Council’s existing budget. “Council will continue to explore opportunities for a new library building through its own future developments or in partnership with private development within the Queen Street precinct,” the spokesman said.

ernhill Estate will be open for bushwalking and picknicking from next year, under a five-year plan to progressively transform the historic 423-hectare estate into a public parkland. Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the Fernhill Estate Foundation Plan of Management to 2026 set a path for how the estate would open up. “The NSW Government purchased Fernhill Estate in 2018 with a vision to transform this historic home into a parkland for people, and the five-year plan of management sets out how we will get on with this important job,” he said. “Fernhill Estate is a green jewel in Sydney’s crown. Over the next five years it will open up for bushwalking, bike riding, picnicking and events.” Penrith MP and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said Fernhill Estate would be an iconic western Sydney parkland. “Fernhill is such a special place that has been closed to the public for over a century. fter 90 years at its iconic spot at the top of High Street, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has revealed it will shift its Penrith branch. A CBA spokeswoman confirmed the rumour, saying the branch will move from 384-386 High Street, Penrith before the end of the year, as part of CBA’s “continued investment” into its branch network. “We are investing $3 million in our presence in the Penrith area, and look forward to welcoming local customers to our new Penrith branch which will relocate to 510-536 High Street from midDecember 2021,” she said. “This new branch will showcase the latest in banking technology, including

a coin counting device, 24/7 access to ATMs with instant deposit capability, NetBank kiosks, safe deposit vaults and a change machine.” The Weekender understands the bank will occupy the vacant building next to OnePointHealth, previously home to Priceline, a clothing store, medical centre and skin cancer clinic. The new-look branch also positions CBA closer to the other ‘big four’ banks and just metres away from ANZ. The CBA branch at 384-386 High Street, Penrith first opened way back in December 1931. The Westfield Penrith branch also remains open to serve customers. The relocation means CBA will have two branches within a few hundred metres of each other, sparking further rumours that the Westfield branch may eventually close.

T

he State Emergency Service (SES) received more than 100 calls for help in the wake of last Thursday’s short but severe thunderstorm in Penrith. Thunder, lightning and heavy rain came down quickly around 4pm, with Penrith receiving 24 millimetres of rain in half an hour. The Bureau of Meteorology said hail measuring up to five centimetres fell, which left suburbs like Thornton, Cranebrook and Jordan Springs looking like they had received snowfall. There was minor flooding along High Street in Penrith, near Penrith High

School, while shops in St Marys also suffered damage. Severe flooding also forced the closure of Forrester Road in St Marys. Michael Faccin from Penrith SES said they had predicted more significant damage but received 107 requests for assistance as a result of the thunderstorm. “The calls were largely for trees and branches causing minor damage and blocking some roads,” Mr Faccin said. “The main issue we saw for houses was with the large amount of hail the gutters were not able to cope so when it melted it leaked back into the houses.” Mr Faccin said some the flash flooding in St Marys also caught some vehicles that needed rescuing.

Day of golf to help raise vital New twist in online shopping funds for fight against cancer thanks to Westfield Direct EMILY FESZCZUK

L

ife member of Dunheved Golf Club in St Marys, John Delaney, will be spending Tuesday, December 14 swinging a club to support a charity. The 87-year-old is taking part in the Longest Day Challenge, where golfers from around the country will play a 72-hole marathon to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Every four minutes another Australian is diagnosed with cancer and Mr Delaney was no exception. “We’re all affected by cancer. I’ve lost a sister to breast cancer and my daughter has also been diagnosed,” Mr Delaney said. “When I was diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago, the specialist said I was the first Aboriginal man he’s ever treated but unfortunately, many of my people die from this disease before they realise they’ve got it.” With all funds raised going towards life-saving cancer research and support services, Mr Delaney hopes to raise as much as he can for a great cause. “I’ve named my team Kamilaroi after my people and will be playing the Longer Day option, which is 54 holes with members of my family,” he said. “It’s so important to support Cancer

When we moved into our new home at Cranebrook it was under Basix requirements to have solar hot water – we were very surprised to find our electricity bill is a third of what it was in our old home using electric hot water (Power bill through the roof? Weekender October 15). We also attended a seminar held by Penrith Council in relation to extending our solar to the rest of our house but found even the experts confused about how little our electricity bill is and upon doing the cost benefit analysis extending solar was not a worthwhile option. So my tip is even if you can’t afford to install solar to your entire house, its worthwhile to invest in a solar hot water system – our bill is only $250 a quarter for three adults! ith online shopping proving as popular as ever as a result of the pandemic, Westfield has launched a one-stop shopping service. Westfield Direct allows customers to purchase from multiple stores in one online transaction. Customers can opt to Click and Collect from their local centre within one to five business days, or have their order delivered to their door. “We are bringing the Westfield experience to more people. This is fundamental

to our customer strategy and our ambition to grow,” Scentre Group Chief Customer and Business Development Officer, Phil McAveety said. “Westfield Direct offers more convenience, flexibility and choice for customers to shop Westfield, any time, anywhere – still with the human connection they value.” With a growing range of over 100 brands and product categories so far, Mr McAveety said it will aid both customers ahead of the ‘silly season’ and business partners in terms of revenue. I would like to say congratulations to my favourite local newspaper, The Western Weekender, their staff and to Troy Dodds, Nathan Taylor and Peter Lang on their excellent coverage of Extra Time as well as special Grand Final editions. Also another mention goes out to my beloved team, Penrith Panthers on their excellent season in 2021, winning the Grand Final trophy. I was a bit teary when they won their third Grand Final trophy during this difficult lockdown for four months as it was hard to watch live games from

the comfort of the lounge room while the boys were in QLD playing the game to keep the season going. CATHERINE PIROTTA, VIA EMAIL

Keep Clear and Carry on It has been revealed that over 70 per cent of Australian white cane users are put in danger by ‘everyday’ objects. Common objects like cars parked across driveways, bins left out on footpaths, dumped bikes or scooters, and even people being distracted by mobile devices can impact the freedom and independence of people with low vision or blindness. On International White Cane Day, Guide Dogs Australia is focusing on how everyone can take simple steps to create a safer and more accessible environment for all, especially as communities reopen after extended periods of COVID-19 lockdowns. Our ‘Keep Clear and Carry On’ campaign highlights the very real impact these ‘everyday’ objects can have on people living with low vision and blindness – causing them to feel anxious, unsafe and in danger when travelling. White canes are designed to maximise independence and mobility, so this year we want to bring to light the barriers preventing this and raise awareness, so white cane users can carry on with reaching their independent goals. Surge in solar take-up Lockdown prompts us to re-think our options around electricity prices EMILY FESZCZUK

P

eople’s energy costs have risen as a result of spending more time at home during the pandemic. To combat this, plenty of locals have made the switch to renewable energy with the interest in solar soaring. Director of Penrith Solar Centre, Jake Warner said the business that was founded in 2017 has experienced back to back months of record sales. “Energy prices have risen more than 20 per cent since 2017 so there has always been interest but we are seeing more professionals who are working from home pulling the trigger and installing solar,” Mr Warner said. “Particularly the last three to four months with more people at home at the moment our enquiries have more than tripled… our usual six week turnaround for installation has now been extended to 10 weeks.” With an average 8.5 kilowatts system able to save someone $2,600 a year, Mr Warner said the most important thing for homeowners is to research.

Penrith Solar Centre Director Jake Warner. Photo: Melinda Jane.

“We are locals and only sell the highest quality products that we have on our own homes but we design a system for each client as there is no one size fits all when it comes to solar,” he said. “We do a site inspection, analyse power bills and our systems are smart so our clients can expand on their set up if their

energy needs increase.” Jordan Springs resident, Joey Tuazon had solar installed in November last year and said he was pleased to be in credit from his first quarterly bill. “My main reasons were to obviously reduce the electricity we pay for, but after doing heaps of my own research, I realised

you could do more than just reduce the amount but in fact be in surplus and use the credits to pay for gas,” Mr Tuazon said. “I personally know three others that got solar after me and everyone will have differences in what they’ll get but it pays to do some research on what works best for you before you commit.”

I’m delighted that consultation is now open on the concept plans for the much-anticipated upgrade of Dunheved Road, which will improve an integral part of Penrith’s local road network The $127 million project is fully funded by the Australian Government under the Urban Congestion Fund. It will provide priority upgrades on Dunheved Road, between Richmond Road and the Werrington Road/ Christie Street intersection to alleviate congestion. This design includes a new median separated four lane carriageway and shared user path along Dunheved Road, instead of the current two-lane undivided road. It aims to relieve congestion, improve community access, and contribute enormously to safety and efficiency in the area. To provide comments, please visit yoursaypenrith.com.au/dunhevedroadupgrade – here you can see an overview of the concept plans, a fly through of how the new road will look and full details for each intersection upgrade. The consultation period is open from

October 18 to November 12 2021. If you use Dunheved Road, please take the time to get involved and tell us what you think, especially if you live or work in the surrounding area. We particularly encourage people in the suburbs of Cambridge Gardens, Cambridge Park, St Marys, Werrington, Werrington Downs and Werrington County to take part. We want this upgrade to deliver the best outcomes for local families and businesses, easing congestion and improving safety. That’s why it’s so important that you make your voice heard and contribute to the community consultation. Following the consultation period, a report will be developed so Council can consider the feedback provided by the community on the concept plans. The final designs for Dunheved Road Upgrade are expected to be on display in mid-2022. Construction is anticipated to start in early 2023. I strongly urge you to have your say and tell Council what you think by November 12 2021.

Muhammad’s idea could turn out to be a life saver – literally EMILY FESZCZUK

uhammad Sufyaan might only be nine-years-old but this young inventor has a bright future ahead of him. The Year 4 Kingswood Public School student is amongst 12 finalists from across Australia in the Origin Little Big Idea competition. Applying for the first time this year, Muhammad was selected from more than 1,100 entries for his innovative idea. “I like coming up with different ideas and especially want to help in life with human beings and also keeping animals safe from hazards,” Muhammad said. “Recently a three-year-old non verbal child went missing and was found alive luckily after three days but it seriously got me worried and I started thinking of the idea.” The idea, titled Keep an Eye is an arm band designed to prevent children from going missing on large properties. It features geo-location technology that alerts parents when their child moves beyond 500 metres of their home and if the

parent is unresponsive, it will automatically send an alert to the police to inform them of the child’s location.

Receiving $1,000 and a one-on-one mentoring session from one of the competition’s judges to help evolve his

idea, Muhammad is now in the running to win $10,000 when winners from three age groups are announced in November. Muhammad Waseem said he is extremely proud of his son who has always been interested in inventions. “He always shares news with me about inventions and has ideas to design different things but he was very upset when he heard about the child getting lost as he is eldest with two younger brothers,” Mr Waseem said. “He worked very hard on the idea which I also think would be beneficial for pets or disabled and elderly people so I have no doubt that he and my other boys will make our family and Kingswood proud as they grow up.” Little Big Idea judge Dr Jordan Nguyen said he was blown away by the entrants’ bold thinking and creativity right across the competition. “The extraordinary talent in this year’s cohort has made it one of the trickiest years to judge,” Dr Nguyen said. “It’s awe-inspiring to see how young Aussies are considering the world around them and how their invention could help make for a better future.”

TURNING BACK TIME

Neale’s furniture was an iconic department store in Penrith. There were very few people in Penrith who didn’t have a lounge, cabinet or some other piece of furniture from Neale’s. In fact, some people may still have something from Neale’s in their home today! The Neale family traded on their High

Street site (pictured top left) for a hundred years, before a new store was built in 1987 on The Northern Road, Penrith. In 1994 Neale’s Furniture Store was sold to John Cootes. Neale’s also had a location in St Marys (pictured top right) on the corner of the Great Western Highway and Mamre Road.

This location is now an F45 gym. While the Neale’s name is long gone from Penrith’s business scene, it remains an important and poignant part of our city’s history and part of its very fabric through the 1960s and 1970s in particular. (Photos thanks to Penrith City Library)

enrith is set to become the next home of authentic Asian street food with the arrival of the much-loved P’Nut Street Noodles restaurant chain in Jamisontown, this November. With the upcoming opening of its 12th location, P’Nut will soon provide locals with an immersive traditional Asian street food experience thanks to their signature made-from-scratch sauces, authentic ingredients and taste of Grandma’s recipes just like the bustling street side stalls in Thailand. P’Nut Street Noodles will be opening in true Thai fashion with its very own traditional Tuk Tuk, complete with authentic Thai signage and interior, as well as a never-before-seen restaurant fitout. Situated within a popular complex in Batt Street, Penrith, the family friendly restaurant will be conveniently located opposite Zone Bowling and Flipout Penrith. How a cheap egg slicer reminded me of important business lessons

PropertyValue.com.au

Y

ou would think that, as a business advisor, I would have had more sense. One night while taking turns on kitchen duty, I broke the egg slicer. So, I surfed and found a number advertised on one of those mass product sale sites. One clearance site said that their slicer was “stainless steel”. At least one of the photos seemed to confirm it. It had a bonus that you could slice either horizontal slices or eight vertical segments and even slice other things. So, I ordered the device ($5.25 postage paid) and waited. It arrived! Managed to make my way through the outer package breathlessly waiting to see the magnificent stainlesssteel egg slicer. BIG disappointment, dull grey flimsy plastic. It broke with the third egg sliced.

Gave the item an honest one-star review on the clearance site. So far, I have had four begging emails from the seller offering several inducements (including a replacement item!) to amend my review. If you are a seller/business, work back up the list, each step will demonstrate how intertwined your decisions and the seller’s experiences and perceptions are and how they can impact on your business. ENTERTAINMENT MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PENRITH’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

SEX IN THE SUBURBS EMILY FESZCZUK an women have it all when it comes to sexual freedom, a career, family and sanity? The new Paramount+ original Australian series ‘Spreadsheet’ will explore just that, while documenting the chaos that is bound to ensue. Comedian and Australian acting legend Stephen Curry (pictured), who stars in the show, said it centres around ‘IT Crowd’ and ‘Doc Martin’ star Katherine Parkinson, who plays Lauren. “Lauren is a mother-of-two who finds herself newly divorced and wants to sow her wild oats to make up for lost time,” he told the Weekender. “She sets up a spreadsheet of blokes with her best mate Alex, so that nothing clashes, to make it simple and easy but of course the complete opposite happens and everything gets complicated.” Adding to the complications is Stephen’s character Matt, who accidentally gets added to the sushi train of sex options. “Matt is an old friend and neighbour of hers, as well as being newly single and Lauren, who is a lawyer, is actually helping him with his divorce,” he said. “He is a paramedic and a good hearted man but he ends up accidentally sliding onto the spreadsheet as he keeps accidentally falling in to bed with her.”

C

Dubbed as the ‘nice guy’, Stephen said he has some similarities with his romantic character. “I would like to think I am a nice guy like him but he is more ‘fumbly’ than me,” he said. “I do know if my wife ever left me I would probably be just as lost as him and I would need someone to hold my hand and have no clue if you swipe left or right on dating apps.” With a stellar supporting cast, Stephen said it was a joyous experience filming the show. “I had so much fun with the cast like with Robbie Magasiva… never worked with him before but he is very handsome,” he said. “Katrina Milosevic is a good friend of mine and we get on like a house on fire plus Ryan Shelton and Rowan Witt are very classy comedy actors and good fun to be around.” With plenty of humour, Stephen said it provides perfect light viewing. “The characters are beautifully written, so you can relate to them, but it is also ridiculously hilarious,” he said. “Katherine Parkinson is so good as the lead and it is genuine belly laugh funny, which is what you want in a comedy.” Enjoy the eight-part series and a cheeky dose of sex in the suburbs now. ‘Spreadsheet’ is available to stream now on Paramount+, which is available from $8.95 per month.

olly Parton’s West End smashhit musical ‘9 TO 5’ is back in business in 2022. The Australian premiere will open in February next year at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre with tickets on sale from today. Internationally acclaimed and loved by audiences and critics alike, ‘9 TO 5’ is pure gold carat fun! Set the alarm for a great night out at Dolly Parton’s joyous smash-hit musical ‘9 TO 5’, featuring knock-out songs and high-flying ambitions. A sensation on the West End and inspired by the hit film, the musical tells the story of Doralee, Violet and Judy, three enterprising workmates pushed

to the edge by their mean-spirited boss Franklin Hart Jnr. Resorting to wit, camaraderie and cunning, they dream up a no holds barred scheme to kidnap and turn the tables on their controlling supervisor in the most hilariously defiant of ways. The only question is, will the feisty trio manage to change the office culture to reach their full potential – or will events unravel when the CEO pays an unexpected visit? With a sparkling score by Dolly Parton and a book by the iconic movie’s original screenwriter Patricia Resnick, ‘9 TO 5’ is the quintessential feel-good show for the times. The Scary Of Sixty-First

Antlers

1 hour, 21 minutes Arcadia has just released the official trailer for ‘The Scary Of Sixty-First’. Directed and written by Dasha Nekrasova and starring Nekrasova, Betsey Brown, Madeline Quinn and Mark Rapaport, the contemporary horror is set to arrive in Australian cinemas nationally on December 16. Horrific real-world news story becomes giallo-inspired horror in this gleefully deranged interrogation of our conspiracy-fuelled, edge lord-filled times. 20-something New Yorkers Addie (Brown) and Noelle (Quinn) can’t believe their luck when they find an apartment in their price range in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Of course, there’s a catch, and it’s not the food left to rot in the cupboard or

1 hour, 39 minutes From the visionary world of acclaimed director Scott Cooper and horror maestro Guillermo del Toro comes ‘Antlers’. In an isolated Oregon town, a middleschool teacher (Keri Russell) and her sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) become embroiled with her enigmatic student

(Jeremy T. Thomas) whose dark secrets lead to terrifying encounters with a legendary ancestral creature who came before them. Based on the short story The Quiet Boy by Nick Antosca. ‘Antlers’ hits cinemas on October 28.

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Aquarians can expect a rollicking ride, as your motivation levels fluctuate. Is a work colleague or loved one being difficult and demanding? Don’t be too hard on them … they have a lot on their plate. It’s a good week for goals, dreams, financial matters and taking care of business but you’ll feel a bit stir-crazy on the weekend. Try channelling your restless energy into challenging personal projects and adventurous outdoor pursuits, rather than sitting around feeling frustrated.

When it comes to plans for the future, you’re full of innovative ideas and creative schemes. But can you tell the difference between an inspiring daydream and a dodgy delusion? Realistic Saturn demands that you dig deep and set substantial goals that are worthy of your talents. And strive to get the balance right between being impulsive and taking thoughtful action. Spontaneity works sometimes but, at other times, perceptive Pisceans need to adopt a more measured approach.

Promising opportunities are hovering around, and clever Rams will examine all possibilities in a sensible and realistic light. With Jupiter and Saturn both visiting your hopes and wishes zone, it’s important to have an exciting long-term goal that you’re working towards. You need to be patient though, as you focus on bringing your lofty dreams down to earth via a practical plan. Saturday’s Sun/Saturn square will be frustrating, so modify your expectations and pace yourself.

With Venus and Jupiter activating your career zone, find creative ways to inspire others and shine more brightly at work. You’re feeling positive about a challenge but sometimes there’s a fine line between being optimistic and being unrealistic. Wisdom for the week is from birthday great, painter Pablo Picasso (who was born on October 25, 1881), “Our goals can only be reached through the vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act.”

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

The Sun and Mars are visiting your wellbeing zone, so be proactive about finding a fitness routine that keeps you motivated. And choose healthy food options that you actually enjoy eating! Attached Twins – are you stuck in a relationship rut? Venus and Jupiter encourage you to be more adventurous with your partner. Unhappily single? Don’t be dazzled by bulging pecs or a substantial bank balance. Look for lasting love with someone who has similar goals and values.

This week’s planetary patterns suggest retiring an outdated friendship so there’s room for a new one. Creativity is high, as you tap into the magical muse within. With Mars and Mercury visiting your domestic zone, strive to be more proactive and communicative about a current family problem. Plus adjust your home/ work ratio so it’s much more balanced. Many domestically inclined Crabs are in the mood to clean, de-clutter, decorate, renovate or cook up a storm at Casa Cancer.

Many Lions will crank up the charisma, as you make family and friends feel extra special. Venus and Jupiter also stimulate your love of the good things in life, as you enjoy convivial company, beautiful surroundings, fine food and stylish fashion. But avoid the regular tendency to worry and obsess about something that is totally out of your control. Heed the wise words of Mary Engelbreit, “If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.”

The Sun/Saturn square could exacerbate problems with a stressed colleague or a neurotic neighbour, as you misunderstand each other’s motives. Make it a priority to communicate your thoughts and feelings in a clear and compassionate way. It’s a suitable week to study financial matters, find something that’s been lost, tackle jobs you’ve previously put on the backburner, and cross tasks off your long to-do list. Family get-togethers and work functions are also favoured.

Venus and Jupiter encourage you to contribute more of your time and talent to a worthy cause within your local community. And the planets also prompt you to text, tweet, post or publish your ideas to an appreciative audience. But keep your wits about you and avoid getting side-tracked by unrealistic expectations and dubious dreams. Inspiration for the week is from birthday great, actress Julia Roberts (who was born on October 28, 1967), “Loving what you do is the secret to everything.”

Have you been languishing on the sidelines? This week action-planet Mars joins the Sun in your sign so sarcasm and sulking are out, and buoyant joie de vivre is in! There’s much to look forward to as you attract good luck, acknowledge a success or celebrate an important milestone. It’s also time to be as proactive and positive as you can manage. So your mantra for the week is from Scorpio birthday great, painter Pablo Picasso, “One must act in painting as in life, directly.”

Are your goals and dreams for the future ambitious enough? Venus and Jupiter encourage ruminating over bigpicture ideas. Romantic liaisons are likely and friendships are favoured. But there’s no room for false modesty or passive procrastination as you enjoy talking, texting, posting, promoting, publishing or podcasting. So your motto is from birthday great Katy Perry (who was born on October 25), “If you’re presenting yourself with confidence, you can pull off pretty much anything.”

With Saturn (your patron planet) and Jupiter both stimulating your wealth zone, tap into the abundance that is all around you – and not just on a financial level. It’s time to combine your outer creativity with your inner strength, so that you shine brightly for all the world to see. Strong self-esteem and self-acceptance are your Capricorn birthright! So your motto for the moment is from entertainer Katy Perry (who turns 37 on October 25), “Self-acceptance is the key to be truly free.”

PET HEALTH WITH DR ERIN SHORT • GREENCROSS COREEN AVENUE • 4731 3055

Dealing with your itchy pets There are many reasons why pets become itchy. This week continues the discussion on everything that can make your pet itchy, scratchy and totally uncomfortable for both you and your pet. Atopic dermatitis Atopy is a genetically predisposed allergic skin disease and is more commonly seen in breeds such as Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Labradors. This disease involves both a defect in the skin as a barrier and an exaggerated or allergic response to normal environmental substances. Treatment usually targets both of those areas. If your dog has been diagnosed with Atopic dermatitis then it is likely that at some point you will have performed a diet trial to rule out allergy to a component of your dog’s food. Unfortunately, there is no available reliable test to determine food allergy at this time. Treatment options for atopic dermatitis involve targeting both the skin defect and the allergic reaction that occurs in the skin after exposure. Improving the skin barrier: this involves treatments including fish oil (omega 3) supplements in the diet, applying topical oils such as Essential 6, bathing regularly

in an antibacterial shampoo and other local anti-inflammatory treatments. Using these treatments can often be enough to keep your dog’s atopy under

control especially if they are only seasonally allergic. Reducing the allergic reaction: there are many medications to help reduce the

allergic reaction: 1. Antihistamines – these only target a very small part of the allergic reaction and are therefore only useful in the very early stages and often provide no relief at all. 2. Corticosteroids – very effective at reducing the itch but they have some long-term side effects especially if used continuously. 3. Cytopoint – a monthly (or even two monthly) injection – it is a very new treatment and has proven to be an effective treatment in some dogs. It can prove quite expensive in the long-term if your pet has year-round allergies. 4. Apoquel – another very effective anti-itch medication – it is also very effective in the short-term but can get expensive if year-round treatment is needed. There are also some potential side effects if used long term. 5. Immunotherapy – A newer option available to test for specific allergens and have an allergy vaccine made for your pet. If your pet is itchy and you need help to find the source of the problem, contact the team at Greencross Vets Coreen Ave on 4731 3055.

We’re so excited to welcome people to our beautiful Mountains home.

Swimming lessons finally return W

riting this first column back I am reflecting on the totally unforeseen past few months of lockdown 2.0, and the confusion and uncertainly that resulted from the ‘two-week’ lockdown, which turned into 17 weeks away from swimming lessons in our area. Lockdowns have had tragic consequences for our children, with 250,000 swimming lessons missed each week across the state. Sadly, there has been an 108 per cent increase in fatal drownings in Australian children aged 0-4 since the beginning of restrictions, and a 56 per cent increase in the 5-14 years age group. Indoor pools are one of the most COVID-safe environments due to excellent COVID safety plans, chlorine acting as a disinfectant, enough space to socially distance and small half hour classes – yet we had to fight hard to see swimming lessons reinstated. The past months have been largely spent campaigning at the highest levels of State and Federal government and industry for a return to swimming lessons in NSW. We received fantastic

support from our local federal MP, Melissa McIntosh, who has spearheaded a campaign to “put water safety in the fast lane and fast track children back to swimming” on behalf of Penrith local swim schools. In early September we received confirmation that we could reopen on October 11 at 70 per cent vaccination, and were busy preparing when on Monday, September 27, just two weeks prior to reopening, our industry was blindsided by the sudden announcement that we now would have to wait until December 1, along with nightclubs and intimate services! This made absolutely no sense, especially as children would be back at school in large class groups for much longer time periods, allowed to visit restaurants, shopping centres and gyms etc! We simply could not accept the decision that children would not be allowed to resume swimming lessons in the lead up to summer. Following strong campaigning by the NSW Learn To Swim industry (you may have heard us on the radio, seen us in the papers or on the TV news, or supported us on social media) the

return to Learn To Swim date was brought forward to the 80 per cent vaccination target, estimated to be reached on October 25 … and with a sigh of relief we once again began planning to reopen on that date. However in the week following Gladys Berejiklian’s resignation, our reopening date was brought forward again to October 11 with only a few days’ notice, again throwing the industry into confusion! With many swim school staff still juggling home schooling commitments and/or awaiting second vaccinations, and with a swim school of our size needing time to restart equipment and achieve the correct water chemistry for lessons, it was all systems go to see how quickly we could get back to lifesaving swimming lessons. It has been a long road, but we are now so excited – and it will all be worth it many times over when we reopen our doors this Monday, October 25. We can’t wait to see everyone back at their local swim school soon. Love to Swim, Swim for Safety, Swim for Life! See you next week.

HEALTH Why your calf muscles cramp while walking, and what to do about it

H

ave you ever wondered why you develop pain or cramping in your calf muscles when walking that goes away when you rest? You may have something that is known as intermittent claudication. Intermittent claudication refers to pain and/or cramping that develops in the muscles of the legs in response to exertion (often walking). The calf muscles are most commonly affected; however it can also affect the thighs and buttock region. Intermittent claudication is a result of peripheral vascular disease (PVD). This causes narrowing or hardening of the arteries and consequently reduces blood flow to affected areas. During physical exertion such as with walking, our muscles require more oxygen, however due to this reduction in blood flow, the supply of oxygen that is provided to the muscles does not meet the demand and cramping occurs. Symptoms can often be worse when walking uphill or being barefoot or in flat shoes as in these instances the muscles of the leg have to work harder and therefore require more oxygen. The phenomenon is referred to as ‘intermittent claudication’ because symptoms resolve when resting due to

the reduced demand for oxygen. It is important to recognise that not all pain in the legs during exercise is reflective of intermittent claudication as there are other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as issues related to nerve compression. Intermittent claudication is a manifestation of chronic PVD. However not everyone who has PVD will also experience intermittent claudication. Risk factors for developing intermittent claudication are similar to those of PVD, which includes smoking, high cholesterol and having diabetes. Intermittent claudication is also more common amongst men and the risk of developing it increases with age.

Haval’s range expands All-new hybrid set to be a major player in the auto market early next year NATHAN TAYLOR

G

WM Australia & New Zealand has announced that its Haval SUV range will expand further from early 2022 with the arrival of the all-new Haval H6 Hybrid. Powered by a 1.5 litre turbo petrol engine mated to a two speed 130kW electric drive motor the Haval H6 Hybrid offers a class leading combination of 179kW and 530Nm. With an abundance of torque available across a wide rev range, the new H6 Hybrid delivers an excellent combination of performance and efficiency. With Front Wheel Drive mated to GWM’s new Direct Hybrid Transmission (DHT), the H6 Hybrid becomes the most frugal SUV in the Haval line up sipping just 5.2 litres per 100km of regular unleaded fuel. Paired with a two speed transmission, the Haval H6 Hybrid combines impressive acceleration and performance at low speeds with improved efficiency and power at higher speeds, resulting in a driving experience similar to a BEV. The Haval H6 Hybrid becomes the

company’s most advanced SUV ever and is the first model in the Australian line-up to feature alternative, new energy drivetrain technology. Since its introduction in April, the new Haval H6 has been warmly received by Australian new car buyers with segment

share reaching an impressive 4.6 per cent in July. The addition of Hybrid technology to the H6 line-up is expected to broaden its appeal even further and further cement its place as one of the best new models in the highly competitive medium SUV segment. Production of the new Haval H6 Hybrid

commenced at GWM’s new plant in Rayong, Thailand, in June with the new model quickly securing a top three position in the country’s compact SUV segment. The Haval H6 Hybrid for Australia will be sourced from China.

he most talked about trophy in Australian sport is now intact and on display at the foyer of Penrith Panthers Leagues Club. Since the popular Mulgoa Road venue reopened a fortnight ago, thousands of fans have already paid a visit to the famous Provan-Summons Trophy; with many choosing to snap a ‘selfie’ with the prize to celebrate Penrith’s incredible triumph over South Sydney back on October 3. Along with the current Premiership, the Panthers are also proudly displaying replicas of their 1991 and 2003 trophies as well – so fans can take a photo with all three. Meanwhile, rumours joyful Panthers players purposely broke the iconic ProvanSummons Trophy whilst celebrating their Grand Final win in Queensland have been cleared up once and for all. Last Sunday NewsCorp revealed that an unidentified female – understood to be part of the Panthers’ inner sanctum – innocently caused a table that was holding the trophy to collapse, accidentally breaking the trophy as a result. The publication said the NRL Integrity Unit obtained a video which showed the trophy-holding table falling after a woman sat on it to get a picture with rugby league’s greatest prize.

The trophy hit the ground and caused the bronze bust of legends Norm Provan and Arthur Summons to be separated from the base. It’s understood a previous weld in the rod that holds the bust to the base gave way when the trophy hit the ground. The repair bill for the trophy was minimal and has been covered by the Panthers. And finally, the countdown is on until Panthers fans (and players) get to celebrate the club’s thrilling 14-12 victory over the Rabbitohs once again, with a street parade and members’ event at BlueBet Stadium planned for Saturday, November 20. The Weekender understands the Panthers are currently in negotiations to hold a street parade in Penrith next month as well as a second parade and signing session in Bathurst – their home away from home – in early January. Details are expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Fitzgerald locked in to lead Giants for another two years

Collins heads to St Marys after Wests Tigers break-up NATHAN TAYLOR

M Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald has re-signed. Photo: Nigel Owen.

NATHAN TAYLOR

S

uper Netball’s most experienced coach, Julie Fitzgerald, is returning to Giants Netball for a further two seasons. The 360-game coach will continue her National League coaching career into her 25th season, having put pen to paper with the Giants until the end of 2023. Fitzgerald has been instrumental in the start-up and success of the Giants. Attracting world-class players, whilst developing local talent, Fitzgerald has coached the Giants to two Minor Premier-

ships, two Grand Finals and three Finals appearances in her five years at the club. Fitzgerald said she was privileged to have the opportunity to continue to develop the club. “Whilst we had success in 2021, I feel like we have unfinished business and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve as a club over the next two years and beyond,” she said. “I’m excited by the group we have in 2022. There is a blend of both youth and experience and every one of them is excited and ready to be a Giant. “I’m proud to be a part of this club and what we’re looking to achieve.”

ichael Maguire’s loss at Concord is St Marys’ gain, with former Wests Tigers assistant Wayne “Snoopy” Collins signing on as the club’s new Ron Massey Cup coach for next season. The announcement of Collins follows the decision by current Saints head coach Shane Elford to step away from St Marys and link back up with Penrith on a fulltime basis next season. “After three seasons as head coach of the Saints Ron Massey Cup team, ‘Spud’ (Elford) has been instrumental and has had a huge impact on our club,” St Marys Rugby League Manager, Adam Przybyla said. “On behalf of everyone at Saints, I wish Shane and his family all the very best with this exciting new chapter.” In a review of replacing Elford, the St Marys Rugby League Club Board resolved and supported the appointment of Collins, who’s had an extensive career in the game. Not only was Collins a member of St Marys’ Ron Massey Cup campaign back in 2019, but he’s held several NRL assistant coaching positions throughout the years including at Canberra, Penrith, South Sydney and most recently at Wests

New St Marys coach Wayne Collins.

Tigers under Michael Maguire. “‘Snoop’ is the perfect replacement,” Przybyla said. “He has a very clear understanding of our systems, the support staff and the current roster. “A terrific man who is very well respected and, with his extensive knowledge and experience, will be a huge asset to our club and playing group.”

Emus back again Elite Sydney clubs tossed them out, but club lives on NATHAN TAYLOR

A

dd Emu to the list of incredible creatures that simply refuse to die. Mere months after they were axed from Sydney’s Shute Shield competition for the second and final time, the Emus will miraculously return to the field next season via the ACT & SNSW Rugby Union’s John | Dent Cup. Following consultation with the current Premier clubs, who unanimously supported the Emus’ addition, the ACT & SNSW Rugby Union Board formally endorsed Penrith’s inclusion in the John | Dent Cup, which will enter its 84th season in 2022. Established in 1965, the Emus played in the Shute Shield from 1995 to 2018, and again for the last two seasons before being dramatically dumped in August. For season 2022, the Emus are committing to fielding teams in first grade, second grade, Colts and even a Women’s competition. Rugby Deputy CEO and General Manager Community Rugby, Craig Leseberg, said Penrith are a proud club with a

Penrith Emus President Gary McColl.

rich history and strong community focus. “The Emus have great support from Penrith Council and local businesses, and healthy playing numbers across their senior rugby program,” he said. “This is exciting news that gives certainty to their dedicated players, coaches and volunteers. “ACT & SNSW Rugby is delighted to be able to support Penrith’s ambitions to play at a Premier Rugby level and is thrilled at the prospect of a refreshed competition structure for next season,

as we eagerly re-emerge from a COVID interrupted 2021.” Just two months ago, the Penrith Emus were left shattered when the Sydney Rugby Union tossed them out of the Shute Shield for the second time in three years. Penrith Emus President Gary McColl was furious at the time, questioning why the club was invited back into Sydney’s top competition only to be thrown out again. Last Friday, McColl thanked the ACT & SNSW Rugby Union’s Board and respective John | Dent Cup clubs for offering the Emus a much-needed lifeline. “The competition has a wonderfully rich history, and when we think of some of the players the John | Dent Cup has produced, we can only be excited for young rugby players in Penrith, girls and boys who hope to go on to bigger and better things,” McColl said. “This has obviously been a difficult time for everyone at our club but we have stuck together and can now look forward to an exciting new era for the Penrith Emus.” The Emus’ affiliation will be reviewed in 12 months, though both parties are understood to be fully committed to a long-term partnership.

SPORT MAY FACING PANTHERS EXIT Story continued from » p.56

May has agreed to terms on a new deal with Penrith for the 2022 season but it’s understood the contract may not yet be registered with the NRL. The club has not announced his re-signing. Meanwhile, Penrith co-captain Nathan Cleary and centre Stephen Crichton have been issued with Breach Notices alleging that they “acted contrary to the best interests of the game after they were photographed on social media acting in a disrespectful manner toward the NRL Telstra Premiership Trophy”. It is an extraordinary move by the NRL which now must set a precedent in relation to how clubs handle the trophy. Last year, Melbourne Storm players were shown pouring beer into the trophy and cradling it like a baby but the NRL did not issue fines. Cleary has been hit with a $7,000 fine, while Crichton faces a $4,000 penalty. “The Panthers players had no intention to show disrespect towards the trophy, Norm Provan or Arthur Summons, however they understand that’s how their actions may have been interpreted,” said Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher.

Around The Grounds

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have confirmed the loan signing of Japanese forward Keijiro Ogawa for the upcoming A-League season. The experienced forward has spent his entire career in Japan, predominately at J1 League side Vissel Kobe where he played close to 180 games over eight seasons. During his time in Japan, Ogawa won the Super Cup, Emperor Cup and J-League Cup with Vissel Kobe and more recently spent the last season with Yokohoma FC where he has featured in 23 matches. Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas welcomed Keijiro to the club. “Keijiro’s signing with the club further solidifies our club’s connection and linkage with Asian football as well as our history in the region,” he said. “We have had a great history with Japanese players at the club since our inception and we are looking forward to Keijiro reinforcing this reputation in our Red & Black history.” Keijiro said he was excited to touch down in western Sydney in the coming weeks. “Western

Sydney Wanderers is a great team and is a famous club in both Japan and also in Asia, so I want to be part of this team,” he said. “I will fight for the team so that the supporters will remember the name Keijiro! Thank you for your support!” CRICKET: Cricket NSW have announced the 2021/22 NSW Premier Cricket season will kick off on November 6 for first and second grade players, while third, fourth and fifth graders will commence a week later on November 13. The first grade season will comprise 15 rounds made up of 11 One Day matches and four Two Day matches, which include two Saturday/Sunday matches. Sadly, the First Grade Limited-Overs Cup won’t proceed this season. SPORT: Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has announced local sporting organisations can apply for grants to help remove barriers to participation, purchase equipment and improve facilities, under the NSW Government’s $4.6 million Local Sport Grants Program. Mr Ayres said the funding will provide a welcome lift to local sporting organisations. “I know how important sport is to the community right across Penrith, especially as the state emerges from lockdown,” he said. “These grants will help local clubs increase participation by addressing barriers, delivering sports development programs and upgrading equipment and facilities.” For more information, visit www.sport.nsw.gov. au/local-sport-grant-program.

The Western Sydney Wanderers star and Werrington Downs resident is yet to make her Matildas debut but is considered a strong chance to get on the field in the upcoming two games. A crowd of 22,500 fully vaccinated fans are expected to attend both games in Parramatta.

May’s habit of bringing trouble upon himself has struck again, this time stood down by the club and fined by the NRL over a controversial Instagram post after the Grand Final. The NRL alleges May acted “contrary to the best interests of the game” for posting and being part of social media posts “which do not align with the values of the game”.

The Panthers responded immediately, standing May down from all club-related duties. “The matter will be considered further at the upcoming meeting of the Panthers Board of Directors,” the club said in a statement. The Weekender understands

that while May enjoys the support of some key people within the club, the Board will strongly consider cutting ties with the 25-year-old. The club is aware that May no longer enjoys the support of a number of key sponsors, nor that of the wider fan base. May narrowly avoided jail after pleading guilty to four counts of intentionally recording an intimate image without consent. The sex tape scandal erupted prior to the 2019 season but May has remained part of the Panthers squad and played in the past two Grand Finals. His recent Instagram post, which he later deleted, featured a photo of May and Panthers coach Ivan Cleary leaving Parramatta Local Court with lyrics from rapper Drake: “And the dirt that they threw on my name turned to soil and I grew up out it. Time for y’all to figure out what y’all gon’ do about it. Love my brothers”. Story continues on » p. 55
