even students from Newtown High School of Performing Arts lopped their locks in the name of leukaemia research on Thursday after smashing past their fundraising target of $8,000 to reach a fi nal figure of $11,174.

“We’re just so grateful. People just kept throwing cash at us,” said school captain and event organiser Alex Cook, 17.

Miss Cook said the Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser had become an annual school tradition since 2011, when a relative of a former school captain, Tristan Black, was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Q

Peter Harvey was a dear friend, mentor and colleague to all of us.

He had a unique way of telling a story.

An economy of words, yet he used them in such an evocative, meaningful and thoughtful way.

He could deliver the punch in a handful of words where others might need a couple of paragraphs.

Th row in that baritone voice and it was magical. We all wanted to be as good as him.

Peter also taught us so much about living in the way he handled his illness.

He lived for the day and didn’t dwell on what tomorrow may reveal.

What sustained Harves when he was dealing with his cancer was coming to work and doing his job.

And him being in the newsroom sustained us as well.

I spent a fair bit of time with Peter over the last month as his fight got tougher.

We completed fi lming a special on his life… a life that not only enriched Australian television audiences but a life that has been lived, large, loud and full of love.

I visited him in hospital in the days before he died and gave him a hug. It was a hug from us all.

Now his desk and chair are empty, and I will miss his legendary sign off from his stories in the news each night.

But his presence will of course remain, his magnificent voice, that introduces the Sydney 6pm news every night will continue.

That is what he wanted.

And that is what we want too.

A reminder of the great newsman that Peter Harvey was.

Suburb is most popular in state due to value, convenience

nmore has been ranked the most in-demand suburb in NSW for home buyers, with the toughest competition to fi nd a home and the least amount of vacancy days for properties on the market.

Th is month’s Australian Property Investor magazine reported on figures released in February by Australian Property Monitors, which showed Enmore homes sold faster than properties in any other suburb in NSW, with only 19 vacancy days, followed by the north shore’s Lane Cove West, with 26 vacancy days.

Residential sales agent, Chris Nelson, of Marrickville-based Peter Nelson Real Estate, said he was not surprised by the figures and said Enmore had “moved ahead quite a lot in the last two or three yearsâ€?, with inquiries about Enmore homes a “daily occurrenceâ€? in his office. “Even last year when the property market was really slow things were better in suburbs like Enmore than they generally were in other parts of Sydney, defi nitely,â€? Mr Nelson said. “They are larger blocks than the subdivisions you get in Newtown, there’s more open space‌ You get more for your dollar in Enmore. “There’s also less medium and higher density housing, which probably helps the stats. There aren’t a lot of apartments; the market is more for terraces and houses.â€?

Tracking short of expectations Mayor says upgrade welcome but doesn’t cater for disabled, aged and prams

S

ydenham train station has been upgraded to include four new lifts and a new station concourse as part of a $35 million State Government project.

Since February 25, commuters have been able to access a new overhead concourse that stretches across the station’s platforms, along with four lifts, new ticketing facilities and public toilets.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said the improvements will help make public transport more accessible for rail passengers.

“Only four months ago this Government opened a major upgrade of Newtown station... Now, customers using Sydenham station can look forward to similar benefits,” she said.

“We are delivering transport infrastructure upgrades where it is needed most and Sydenham and Newtown are both key stations on the network with high patronage.”

A Transport for NSW spokesman told the Weekender the station upgrades formed part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program.

“All stations on the network, including Marrickville, Tempe and Dulwich Hill, are being investigated for potential improvements under the Transport Access Program,” the spokesman said.

However, Marrickville Council remains concerned that despite the recent upgrades, many residents with access needs – the disabled, the aged and parents with prams – will be unable to fully use the station as a transport interchange.

Sydenham station has had a $35 million face lift including a new bike storage area in the forecourt.

Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said while he was pleased to see an upgrade at Sydenham, it was disappointing the recent changes had fallen short of both the council’s and the community’s expectations.

“The reality is this is a missed opportunity,” Cr Macri said.

“Sydenham station can’t fully function as an accessible interchange until all commuters, including those with access issues, can freely and safely move between bus, train and pedestrian transit points.

“Council believes it is imperative to address those aspects of the upgrade that have resulted in poorer transport services

for those in our community who may already be hindered by limited mobility and isolation.”

Meanwhile, Council is seeking submissions before April 4 from artists for a mural at Railway Parade, Sydenham, as part of their alternative approaches to graffiti management program.

Seniors Week ambassador encourages exercise

Marrickville Police have appealed for witnesses after a man was run over and seriously injured by a taxi in Marrickville in the early hours of Saturday morning. About 2.40am on Saturday, March 9, a 28-year-old taxi driver was driving along Illawarra Road. As he approached a pedestrian crossing, he slowed to allow a group of men to cross.

Investigators have been told that during a discussion the men sought to hire the cab but were told it was not possible as the driver had fi nished his shift. As the driver moved away from the crossing, a 25-year-old man went under the front of the taxi and was run over.

The injured man was treated at the scene and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition. The driver was also taken to hospital where he underwent mandatory blood and urine testing. Police investigations are continuing.

eniors Week is a time to reflect on the contribution of our older community members but also raise awareness of medical conditions affecting seniors such as dementia.

Seniors Week ambassador and Sydney University Professor Michael Besser AM says that it is important for seniors to keep active both mentally and physically to reduce the risk of dementia.

Prof Besser, a retired consultant neurosurgeon, said he is very interested in the impact of exercise.

“It’s been shown that if you exercise actively then there’s a large increase in the incidence of dementia and an increase in cognitive skills,” he said.

Prof. Besser said regular exercise not only reduces health problems like blood pressure, obesity and depression, but also reduces the incidence of dementia by 30 per cent.

“Exercise the brain,” he said.

“There’s evidence accumulating that endurance exercise has a big role to play in the development of the brain in the human species.”

He said studies on the hippocampus, the part of the brain important for memory that normally shrinks with age, had been shown through MRI scans to grow back in old age if people undertook regular endurance exercise.

“We all know there’s an ageing population and the incidence of Alzheimer’s is going through the roof…

It’s never too late to start exercising and the benefits accumulate very quickly. Within a month you get that reduction in cognitive decline.

“We’ve got the evidence to really make a difference to the incidence of Alzheimer’s, we have the answer now. We’re not going to cure it but we can make a big dent in it.”

acant land at Lewisham will be auctioned off despite safety concerns from Marrickville Council if the land is developed and despite a petition from residents to save the lot for car parking.

In November, the Weekender reported that 40 Old Canterbury Road on the corner of Barker Street, Lewisham could be sold as surplus land after the Roads and Maritime Services was directed by the State Government to sell the lot, currently used by residents for parking.

In January, following representations to the RMS,

Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt and roads minister Duncan Gay, Marrickville Council was notified the RMS would proceed with the sale by public auction.

In a January letter to Carmel Tebbutt, Roads Minister Duncan Gay said there was no evidence to suggest the land had been historically promised to residents for parking.

Advice from Marrickville Council’s manager of planning services indicated the site cannot be used as a car park under its existing zoning and a recent council report showed the council budget has no funds available to buy the land.

The former Department of Main Roads acquired the lot for the purposes of the Old Canterbury Road deviation, a proposal that has been abandoned.

Lights off for Newtown Earth Hour Newtown will host an unplugged version of Earth Hour with night trading restaurants, bars and cafés offering candlelight dining and live acoustic entertainment.

Newtown Unplugged for Earth Hour is inviting acoustic musicians and local businesses to take part in the hourlong event on Saturday, March 23 from 8.30pm. Already 35 Newtown businesses and 10 musicians have signed up.

Businesses that participate in Newtown Unplugged for Earth Hour by dimming their lights for the evening, will receive free beeswax candles from the Green Living Centre.

Since it was launched in Sydney in 2007, Marrickville Council has proudly supported Earth Hour and in conjunction with The Green Living Centre is proud to again lend its support this year.

Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative in partnership with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Leo Burnett. The event began in Sydney in 2007 and in 2011 Earth Hour reached over 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across every continent.

Internal Labor woes hide Coalition kerfuffle

C

ould this be the week Labor fi nally got the clear air it needed to escape its self-suffocating death spiral?

On Tuesday, the party got the Newspoll bounce it needed.

Its primary vote rose three points to 34 per cent and Julia Gillard reclaimed her position ahead of Tony Abbott in the preferred Prime Minister stakes.

It wasn’t entirely unexpected.

Sure, the PM copped a lot of criticism (including from me) for her ‘western Sydney blitz’.

But after promising billions of dollars for aged care, jobs and the WestConnex project, if Labor didn’t get an opinion poll bounce something would be seriously wrong.

Th is next sitting of Parliament is regarded as crucial for her leadership and it’s in the chamber the PM performs best.

She came out all guns blazing on the fi rst sitting day, determined not to be bogged down by the dissenters, internal politics and naval gazing.

Julia Gillard set a policy agenda, instead of being dictated by a political one.

It was a message as much to the electorate as her own party.

She’s getting on with the job and wants

everyone to know it.

The proposed new media reforms and stricter approvals for Coal Seam Gas projects have already generated plenty of discussion.

Yes, the Government has been criticised over them. But at least the critics are talking (mostly) about policies.

And it forces the Opposition to put forward its own policies and policy responses.

When major reforms or legislation are being debated, the Coalition can’t just sit back and allow its opponents to fight amongst themselves.

Putting forward your own positions also invites greater scrutiny and the past few weeks have exposed plenty of confusion on the conservative side.

One issue in particular is carbon tax compensation.

Tony Abbott’s promised to scrap it, and replace it with his own tax cuts and pension increases.

It’ll be costly. How will he pay for it? He won’t tell us until just days before the election.

Then Joe Hockey wrongly claimed the Coalition would still compensate businesses who lose money under the carbon tax.

Julia Gillard has come out strong in Parliament this week after a visit to western Sydney.

Changes to the tax free threshold were also part of the Government’s compensation package.

But Mr Abbott and Mr Hockey now say maybe that won’t be scrapped after all.

Confused? Don’t worry – so is the Opposition it seems.

You see – not only does Labor damage itself with internal woes, but the Coalition get away with so much more.

Then again, there’s a Nielsen poll due next week. And you can bet if that goes backwards, the leadership rumblings will grow louder again.

Nutrition as preventative health care

hese days a lot of people are waking up to the fact that good health is much better achieved by preventative measures before there actually is any illness.

Th ink of all the many billions of dollars spent on cancer research. If a part of that went to educating people how healthy nutrition and lifestyle can actually help you not get cancer in the fi rst place, imagine how much suffering would be avoided.

Even the medical community seem to be getting more involved with nutrition as healing and preventative health care.

The Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) Inc, the Preventative Health Flagship of CSIRO, and the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) are proud to announce the third International Conference on the Science of Nutrition in Medicine and Healthcare, to be held from May 3 to 5, 2013 at the Sheraton on the Park, Sydney, Australia.

To detox or not to detox?

T

his week we are lucky to have Susan Williams, an accredited practising dietitian and Director of Zest Nutrition in Penrith write in for us: “I was recently asked for my advice on a detox product. I checked it out and read the web based ‘review’ that was fi lled with wild claims, celebrity pictures and links to ‘buy now’. How fortunate that there was a special price that ended that day! I just checked the site again more than two weeks later, the special price now ends today again?

Could it be a scam? You bet it is!

Whilst a dodgy cleanse is a bad idea, a short sharp change to your usual diet may act like a reset button and have some benefit. Without getting all confessional, when I thought about my caffeine and alcohol consumption I realised that I was drinking more than I considered I needed. It wasn’t doing me any good and I wasn’t even enjoying it.

Well that’s stupid, I thought! I decided to cut out caffeine and alcohol for two weeks. Why two weeks? It just seemed right.

I started on a Saturday; I figured if I got a bit of a headache at least I’d be at home, lucky! For the next few days my brain felt swollen bigger in my head!

That was the caffeine, turns out I didn’t even miss the alcohol!

I am certainly not advising everyone else to follow my lead, it was hard for a few days and a gradual reduction would have been much more sensible. It would be good to get a GP checkup fi rst.

Over the two week period I noticed how often I would have had a tea or coffee instead of eating or when I needed a rest. I also found surprisingly, that without a glass of wine at arsenic hour I was calmer and more patient. I thought the alcohol was relaxing me but it actually made me crankier!

So I’m back to a cup of tea in the morning and I’m saving coffee for when I go out. Alcohol is once or twice a week and only after the kids are in bed when I can savour and enjoy it.

Oh and you’re right to be wondering: ‘A dietitian drinking too much alcohol and caffeine? Doesn’t she know this stuff ?’ Yes she does, but she’s human just like everyone else!”

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR I

thought I’d mix things up for this week’s column and take you behindthe-scenes of a recent trip to Las Vegas.

No, I’ll leave ‘The Hangover’ style moments for another column, however I’d like to tell you about my experience on the ‘Pawn Stars VIP Tour’.

As many of you may already know, I’m a huge fan of the factual series ‘Pawns Stars’ on A&E, so I thought a trip to Sin City wouldn’t be the same without visiting the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop.

My tour, which was run by reputable Las Vegas tour company OnBoard Tours, started outside the Bally’s Hotel and Casino, about half way up the famous Las Vegas Strip.

Our first stop took us to the location of another popular A&E series, Rick’s Restoration, from of course the hit spin-

I’d be truly surprised if any actual business gets done there at all, apart from scenes filmed for the show. I mean I certainly wouldn’t take my watch to be pawned there, it’s just far too chaotic.

Once we arrived we were greeted by none other than the star of the show himself, Rick Dale, who kindly posed for photos with us.

However, if you wanted to take home a copy of that photograph you had to cough up an incredible US$50!

Once inside we were told we couldn’t take photos during the tour in case we revealed something that hadn’t aired on television yet.

The tour inside ran for about 15 minutes and didn’t really show us much apart from a few of the cast working on some restorations for the show.

Our next stop was to another reality show location from the popular Animal Planet series ‘Tanked’.

Here, our tour group was treated to a 10 minute chat by one of the cast members from the show. He also posed for pictures, but thankfully there was no price tag attached to the happy snap.

Onto the next location, the Toy Shack and Ultimate Sports Cards & Memorabilia, which were both in the downtown section of the city and both featured on ‘Pawn Stars’.

These places were amazing with plenty of cool, unique stuff to be found.

Our last location was of course, you guessed it, the home of ‘Pawn Stars’.

When we arrived we noticed the huge line up of customers and tourists eager to get inside. We were told most had been waiting up to two hours to get in and that we should not look any of them in the eye as our VIP Tour was allowed to head straight in – no waiting.

Inside I was surprised to find that the shop was very small, packed with tourists and there were no real items of interest from the show on display – apart from some very cool NBA and NFL Championship rings.

All in all, the tour was worth going on, even though I was a little gutted that the pawn shop wasn’t as awesome as I hoped, but hey that’s the magic of television I guess.

remier Australian woman bowler Karen Murphy was at Marrickville Bowling and Recreation Club on Sunday to host a lawn bowls clinic for 12 of the club’s female bowlers.

Ms Murphy, who recently battled Marrickville Bowling Club bowler Liz Baker at the Australian Open of Lawn Bowls in Melbourne, told the Weekender she split the two-hour master class session into an hour of indoor theory and

an hour of green skills training.

“They were great, really good mix of girls,” Ms Murphy said.

“Hopefully this helps them prepare for the upcoming Pennant season.”

One of the master class organisers and ladies’ bowling club member Janet McLean said she hoped Ms Murphy’s expertise would help her peers prepare for the ladies’ inter-club tournaments.

“They’re paying Pennants and Karen is the world champion and knows tactics for winning world games,” Ms McLean said.

“It’s pretty amazing to have a world champion just hanging around the club.”

Welcome to what we hope is the fi rst of many columns on Lawn Bowls. It is quite a busy time on the greens in the inner west with the inter club competition known as Pennants underway.

The name Pennant is because at the end of the competition the winners are not awarded a trophy but rather a large flag in the style of a pennant.

There have been two rounds completed out of 10 for the men and five rounds out of 10 for the women. In the men’s Pennants there are over 20 clubs playing from the inner west and eastern suburbs over seven grades.

Alexandria Erskineville are defending champions in grade one and judging by the results of the fi rst two rounds they will again be the favourites. Led by current state singles champion Ray Pearse the club in round one easily accounted for Double Bay. They won all three rinks to score an impressive 6-0.

Wests Sports at Croydon also had a good

fi rst round in the grade one winning 5-1 over Waverley. The second round clash saw Alexandria Erskineville and Wests Sports Croydon up against each other, the Erko boys as they are fondly known again scored a 6-0 win.

Alexandria Erskineville are repeating their good performances in grade two with a 5-1 win over Double Bay in round one and repeat 5-1 over Ashfield in round two.

Marrickville has a team in grade three and they are doing very well, currently on top of the table with solid wins over Balmain and Ashfield.

Marrickville is also fielding a team in grade seven and they are also on top of the table.

In the women’s Pennants Lidcombe were too strong for Ashfield and and West Sports Croydon recorded a win over Leichhardt. In the mid week match for the women Ashfield and Lidcombe were the winners. Lidcombe is currently on top of the table. Good bowling all round.

Battle of Cats Wests Tigers Coach Mick Potter has named his side to take on the Penrith Panthers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Sunday. March 17, at 3pm.

Potter named an unchanged side to meet the Panthers, with only Bodene Thompson dropping off an extended bench.

The coach is confident his men can turn around their disappointing performance against the Knights in round one at Campbelltown Sports Stadium this Sunday. ‘‘We’re looking to rectify what we did on Monday. The season is not over in round one,” the Coach said, calling on support from Wests members.

Jets not cut up The defending VB NSW Cup premiers, the Newtown Jets, won their opening round match of the 2013 competition when they defeated the Illawarra Cutters 30-10 in a hard-fought and at times spiteful encounter played at the WIN Stadium, Wollongong.

Newtown’s heavy-hitting forwards were particularly strong and ultimately won the day.

The Newtown Jets travel across the Tasman to take on the Auckland Vulcans this Saturday, March 16.

Th is is always one of the toughest away games on the NSW Cup calendar, and the match kicks off at 11am (Sydney daylight saving time).

Star-struck footballers Marrickville Football club gets pep talk from Matilda player

emale soccer star Kyah Simon recently visited girls from Marrickville Football Club for a pep talk on healthy living.

The Matilda and former Sydney FC striker in the Australian W-League, who is currently plays for the Boston Breakers, visited Marrickville High School for one of the club’s training sessions in late February.

Lee O’Connor, the club’s junior women’s coordinator, said Ms Simon gave an inspirational speech for about 90 girls before holding a training session.

“There was a message of six good choices you can make that will help your football,” Mr O’Connor said.

“One, say no to smoking. Two, say no to drugs. Th ree, say no to alcohol. Four, get enough sleep. Five, good nutrition and six, understanding what your hydration needs are – so drink plenty of water.”

Mr O’Connor said it was great to see positive influences and for kids in sport to have good examples in sport, particularly given some of the negative press involving Australian sport right now.

“At the moment we’ve got all this stuff with peptides and footballers giving a poor

impression. It’s great to see role models that have a positive and worthwhile approach to life.”

He said the young players responded well
