Shave raises over $11,000 for leukaemia research VANESSA WATSON

even students from Newtown High School of Performing Arts lopped their locks in the name of leukaemia research on Thursday after smashing past their fundraising target of $8,000 to reach a fi nal figure of $11,174. Thomasina George, Emily Mclaren, Rueben Morrison-Greet, Phoebe Cashman, Milan Monk, Bryn Chapman Parish and Zeke Collins went bald for the cause at the World’s Greatest Shave lunchtime event at the King Street school before a

crowd of cheering classmates. “We’re just so grateful. People just kept throwing cash at us,” said school captain and event organiser Alex Cook, 17. Miss Cook said the Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser had become an annual school tradition since 2011, when a relative of a former school captain, Tristan Black, was diagnosed with leukaemia. “Th ree of the shavers dyed their hair on Monday afternoon, just to make a statement in the lead up to the shave. Our school is one of the special ones, they are so open to it and we don’t have restrictions on hair or anything like that,

they’ve been really supportive. “It’s really good to see a lot of people care and also that the shavers are willing to sacrifice their hair for a good cause.” Relieving deputy principal Nilaufer Rajwar said the World’s Greatest Shave was a fantastic initiative and commended the students involved. “I would just like to congratulate each and every one of them, it’s been a fantastic effort on their part,” Miss Rajwar said. Miss Rajwar said the bar had been set high for the school’s 2014 shavers but predicted they would rise to the occasion: “Our kids are always up for a challenge”.
