COVID CRISIS
Another month of lockdown TROY DODDS
A
pained Gladys Berejiklian has extended Sydney’s lockdown by another four weeks as COVID-19 continues to hold the city to ransom. Stay-at-home orders will remain in place until at least Saturday, August 28 as the State Government desperately tries to ramp up vaccine numbers and bring down local Coronavirus cases. However, Ms Berejiklian has confirmed an easing of some restrictions. Non-occupied construction can resume on Saturday outside of the Local Government Areas that are subjected to tighter lockdown restrictions. Those Local Government Areas are Fairfield, Blacktown, Cumberland, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Liverpool, Parramatta and Georges River. “Contactless tradies” can also work at residential and business premises. Year 12 face-to-face learning will resume on Monday, August 16 but home schooling will remain in place for other school students. A ‘singles bubble’ has been introduced, so people living by themselves can be
visited by one person, but it must be the same person throughout the lockdown. Retail and hospitality businesses will remain closed, except for click and collect or in the case of restaurants, takeaway and delivery services. Ms Berejiklian also confirmed that people must stay within their Local Government Area, or inside of 10km, for essential shopping. Health Minister Brad Hazzard said though the stay-at-home restrictions are difficult for the community, this is a critical time if we are to suppress the outbreak. “The vast majority of the community has been absolutely fantastic to date and have followed the public health advice,” he said. “Though we are easing some restrictions we need people to redouble their efforts as we continue to battle the Delta variant in the coming weeks.” Ms Berejiklian said higher vaccination rates and following the health orders are the only way to guarantee the further easing of restrictions. “If you are unvaccinated, please organise a jab as soon as you possibly can,” she said.

Time to take the politics out I
didn’t grow up in an overly political household. At least I don’t think I did. If it was discussed at length, I largely ignored it, probably obsessed with the latest footy trading cards or Sega Master System game. Even in my early working life as a sports reporter, political discussion was very much on the backburner. Who was named at halfback for Penrith on the weekend was more important. Along life’s journey you form different opinions, beliefs and ways of thinking, and I’ve quickly learned that such views get you put in a certain political box and defined as a particular rusted on voter, whether you like it or not. That’s fine, I guess, though it’s largely untrue for a lot of people. Truth is the ‘middle’ decide elections, and it is that middle that is often the most sensible. They don’t blindly follow a political party regardless of particular policies and promises, and they proudly change their mind based on circumstance. You may follow a football team regardless of how they play on the weekend, but you should not necessarily follow a political party in the same way. Many do, of course, and it is during the worst of times when this comes to the fore. The COVID-19 lockdown could not be a better example. Politics has trumped health too much in this pandemic and Australia is worse off for it, with bickering and finger pointing clouding the response. But it is a reality we have to confront and for that reason, it has never been more important for politicians to show that we are indeed “in this together”.
Index
While Uncle John with his weird “research” from the Internet may not agree, it is widely accepted that the vaccine is our way out of lockdowns and serious outbreaks. But there is still way too much vaccine hesitancy in Australia. Way too many people who believe the vaccine is worse than the virus, which simply isn’t true. And a lot of the messaging is getting lost in politics. For some, if Scott Morrison or Gladys Berejiklian say it, it can’t be true. For others, arguing about something said at a press conference by a politician trumps going out and getting the jab. There’s a lot of work to be done to increase the vaccine rate in Australia, but one thing we can do it is take the politics out of it. That’s why I’m putting the call out for Gladys Berejiklian and NSW Labor Leader Chris Minns to stand with each other in a print, digital, TV and radio campaign calling on people to get vaccinated as quickly as possible, and doing some myth busting at the same time. Let’s go one better and get Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese to do the same in a national campaign. In areas where both parties have representation, you can get hyper-local. In Penrith that could mean Stuart Ayres and Prue Car together in ads across local papers, radio stations and billboards. It would show a united front; and for those who don’t follow politics closely each day, it would have a profound impact in showing that regardless of their political party and allegiances, the health of all of us is being put first. If any of the above wouldn’t take part,

it only proves that politics is still playing too much of a role here. Many of the areas currently impacted the worst by COVID-19 are Labor held seats. It stands to reason, therefore, that they may not be listening to the messaging coming out of a Liberal Prime Minister and Liberal Premier as much as we’d like them to. We need to take the politics out of the vaccine message, out of the lockdown message and out of the general day-today COVID-19 response. A united front would help achieve this, and would be almost unprecedented in Australia. An unprecedented campaign for an unprecedented crisis. It’s not going to convince every antivaxxer or vaccine-hesitant person to get the jab, but surely it would make a dent in those who are consistently making this about what political team they do or don’t barrack for. Surely, in such an important time, it couldn’t hurt. And another thing... NSW has largely avoided ‘governing by leak’ in this pandemic, but it appears the horse has now bolted. News of the lockdown extension leaked early on Tuesday night, but Gladys Berejiklian stuck with an 11am Wednesday morning press conference to officially announce it, leaving people on edge in the meantime. She should have announced the extension in a late night presser on Tuesday. If the leak was deliberate, resorting to such tactics is very poor leadership. If it wasn’t, the leaker needs to be found and hauled over the coals.

Council offers local sites for potential vaccination hubs ALENA HIGGINS
A
Penrith Councillor has called on Council to offer its infrastructure as potential vaccination hubs, as the current COVID outbreak continues to swell. Councillor Robin Cook suggested Council approach the NSW Government to offer its facilities. “I was going to suggest that Council look at seeing if we have any of our facilities that would be suitable to activate as clinics, especially in the St Marys area, we’ve got a bit of a lack there,” she said during Council’s meeting on Monday night. “I think as COVID is encroaching closer and closer to Penrith, we do have active cases here, it’s probably a good idea to have some areas and places in mind that we can offer to get these vaccines rolled out into the community.” Mayor Karen McKeown said she had been contacted by some of the community’s prayer groups who have large facilities and had put them in touch with NSW Health. Jeni Pollard, Council’s Place Manager,
COVID testing continues in Penrith, but what about dedicated vaccination hubs?
said the issue was already on Council’s radar. “We’ve been in contact with the Primary Health Network and Local Health District as well on a couple of occasions now, but
also in the last week again, to offer use of any of our facilities and to put forward suggestions about possible facilities as well for vaccination,” Ms Pollard said. “And we’ve been advised that they’re in
the process of looking at the local program at this stage, so we’ll get back to Councillors if there is any change on that.” Meanwhile, a frustrated Councillor John Thain labelled the vaccine roll-out a “dog’s breakfast”, particularly for people with a disability seeking Pfizer. “I think it’s really appropriate,” he said of Cr Cook’s request, “because the whole vaccine roll-out is a dog’s breakfast.” Cr Thain, who suggested NDIS take over the vaccine roll-out for the disabled, said his son got his first shot of Pfizer earlier this month, but according to the booking system, is unable to get his second jab until October. “That’s just ludicrous,” he said. “What’s the point of getting the first shot if you can’t get the second shot and he’s got a disability and you’re supposed to be 1A? “They need to do something and they need to be able to get people with disabilities to get their bloody shot closer to home.” The Weekender contacted Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District for comment about the potential vaccine hubs in the local area, but they didn’t respond prior to deadline.

Delivered to your door Pharmacies ramp up delivery services to avoid contact during lockdown

ith an increasing amount of chemists becoming COVID-19 exposure venues of concern, customers are opting to get their prescriptions and essential items delivered. Pharmacies around Penrith are supporting community members by safely delivering their products straight to their doors. Terry White Chemmart Penrith Compounding Co-Owner and Pharmacist, Lindsey Clark said the chemist on High Street has seen an increase in patients getting delivery.
“We offered free delivery as a normal service before but we would only get around one or two orders and now we can probably average around 20 deliveries a day,” Mr Clark said. “It is a mix of our regular customers as well as new ones who have probably never entered the store but can easily call us or use the online portal on our website to order.” Mr Clark said it is an easy process to ensure people are receiving their essential items while minimising contact with others. “Because of the demand we have had to make it more structured so Monday
to Friday if you get an order in before the Midday cut off we have a car and a rostered staff member who will get it to you the same day,” he said. “People can send through copies of scripts and we will pick the original up upon delivery… we also say it is a 10 kilometre radius but we go all the way out to St Marys, Cranebrook, Emu Plains and Glenmore Park.” Priceline Pharmacy St Clair and Easy Script Compounding Pharmacy in St Marys are also teaming up with healthcare app Chemist2U to deliver to customers for a small fee. Psychiatrist and Chemist2U Founder, Dr
Matthew Cullen said the easy to use app is showing broad patient appeal and uptake, especially during the lockdown. “Chemist2U is propelling pharmacies into the “delivery app” market, by bringing same day delivery of medicine and more straight to the patient’s door,” Dr Cullen said. “Locals can use the Chemist2U app to fill prescriptions, order pharmacy only products ranging from pain relief to cold and flu medications, baby supplies and vitamins to over-the-counter medications for delivery within hours.” To download the app, visit https://chemist2u.com.au.

COVID-19 is very serious and can cause severe illness and death in people of all ages. To keep our community safe, if you live or work in Greater Sydney (including Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour), you must stay home unless it is absolutely essential to leave the house. Do not have visitors to your house and this includes family members who don’t live with you. Keep up to date with the latest rules and restrictions, and get tested immediately and self-isolate if you have any symptoms, or if you’ve been in contact with someone with COVID-19.

More help confirmed Businesses to receive more assistance in wake of lockdown extension
I
t’s cold comfort for some, and a saving grace for others. The State Government will ramp up its support for businesses in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown extension, with many to remain closed or heavily impacted for at least another month. JobSaver payments will now be available to businesses with an annual turnover of between $75,000 and $250 million, up from $50 million, which have experienced a revenue decline of 30 per cent or more. The maximum weekly payment has also been substantially increased, with employing businesses that maintain their employee headcount now able receive between $1,500 and $100,000 per week, up from $10,000, with payments based on 40 per cent of their weekly NSW payroll. “We know these restrictions are tough but necessary to get the current situation under control and that is why we are coming to the table to help businesses and individuals with more financial support,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
“We don’t want people to have to worry about how they are going to keep the lights on or reopen their businesses when restrictions ease, which is why we are investing billions to give people that peace of mind.” NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has been lobbying the Federal Government for more support, and said these additional measures would help save more jobs and businesses. “We know that keeping workers in jobs is critical, which is why we’ve fought hard to secure additional support to help businesses hold onto their staff,” Mr Perrottet said. “We appreciate how difficult it is for businesses right now, and we are also prioritising getting money out the door and into pockets as fast as possible.” Prime Minister Scott Morrison also confirmed more individual assistance would be provided. Anyone who has lost more than 20 hours of work a week will receive $750, up from $600. Anyone who has lost less than 20 hours will receive $450 a week, up from $375. Those receiving other income support will also be eligible for help.
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet addresses the media on Wednesday.

The Penrith community is being reminded that help is available for anyone experiencing domestic or family violence during the lockdown period. With COVID-19 stay-at-home orders in place, exemptions are granted to those who are at risk of harm. A survey of 15,000 women conducted in July 2020 by the Australian Institute of Criminology shed some light into the current situation. The research revealed that over 65 per cent of Australian women either experienced violence for the first time during lockdowns or saw an increase in the frequency and severity of being violated by an abuser. Despite the current restrictions, Nepean Police Area Command Detective Inspector, Jason Pietruszka said residents should not be concerned about leaving their homes if they are in an unsafe situation. “Any person who is subjected to such abuse can leave the home to seek medical attention, respite, police assistance or similar when experiencing domestic or family violence,” Detective Inspector Pietruszka said. “Any victim who is subjected to such behaviour is encouraged to report the offending to police and such incidents will be thoroughly investigated and those responsible will be charged.” Chair of The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter, Sharon Levy said people might be reluctant to leave home during a lockdown but that support is always available. “Our staff are professional case workers who can assist you to escape domestic and family violence in a COVID safe way,” Ms Levy said. “Many women have the wrong idea of what a refuge is like but The Haven is a safe, comforting, supportive environment, so you don’t have to go through this alone.” Ms Levy said reaching out is the first step in securing a safer future for women. “If you need assistance, please call the domestic violence counselling line on 1800 65 64 63 or Link2Home on 1800 152 152 for accommodation,” she said. “Our case workers will support you to make those first few steps to starting a new life, free from domestic and family violence so don’t let lockdown be a barrier – we can help.” – Emily Feszczuk

Anyone who attended or supported the protests that took place in Sydney last weekend should hang their heads in shame. It was so disappointing to see the seriousness of COVID-19 and the current lockdown just brushed aside by these thugs. No matter what your thoughts on government decisions or the current situation, taking to the streets in such a violent manner against the advice of qualified doctors and health officials just shows how downright stupid some people are. What’s even more frightening is plenty of them have kids. What chance do they have?

‘Backyard’ to be expanded as part of Panthers proposal ALENA HIGGINS
P
anthers Group has lodged a Development Application (DA) to expand its ‘Backyard’ and establish a new cafe. Lodged with Penrith Council earlier this month, the $455,000 DA seeks to relocate the existing fence line that encapsulates the Panthers ‘Backyard’ to increase the size of the space and form a larger area for casual recreation.
It also seeks to build a cafe with multipurpose room that straddles the fence line and serves both the Backyard and Aqua Golf business. Offering ‘grab and go’-style food, the cafe is expected to operate from 10am to 9.30pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to 10.30pm Friday to Sunday. The extension of the courtyard is proposed to increase the maximum patron capacity in the area from 800 to 1,500. The DA is being considered.
December Council election The lockdown in Sydney has forced the Local Government Election scheduled for September to be delayed by three months. Locals will now go to the polls to vote for the next era of Penrith Councillors on Saturday, December 4. It’s the second time the election has been delayed after being postponed due to the pandemic last year.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current Public Health Orders impacting Greater Sydney, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the elections until later this year,” said Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock. “We have taken this step to postpone the election to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities, voters, polling staff and candidates.”

aking essential blood donations has been made easier with the local donor centre extending its hours. Now open until 8pm during the week and 5pm on weekends, Lifeblood spokesperson Jennifer Campbell Case said donating blood is still allowed during lockdowns. “Donating blood and plasma remains an essential activity, and travel and venue restrictions do not prevent you from giving blood – we need you now more than ever,” Ms Campbell Case said. “Lockdowns don’t stop the need for blood – there are patients in hospital who need blood and are relying on people to donate.”
Lifeblood has experienced record high demands for blood across the country, with an average bag of donated blood able to travel more than 300 kilometres to help those who need it most. With a high rate of cancelled appointments as the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns roll on, Ms Campbell Case said donors can be assured the centres are open and safe. “In addition to our already strong eligibility and hygiene protocols, we have implemented a wide range of additional measures,” she said. “This includes wellness checks, additional daily cleaning of all areas, restriction of non-donating visitors to our centres and implementing social distancing.” To book, visit lifeblood.com.au or call 13 14 95.

LOCAL NEWS Man pulls gun on cops; two charged A man and woman have been charged after a dramatic chase and arrest through the Penrith area. About 12.15pm on Tuesday, officers were in Carpenter Street, Colyton, for an unrelated matter when they attempted to speak with the male driver and female passenger of a Nissan Dualis SUV. During the interaction, it’s alleged the driver produced a firearm. Officers attempted to smash the driver’s side window before the vehicle drove from the scene. A short time later, officers located the vehicle unattended on Hanlan Street, Cranebrook and checks revealed it had been stolen from Victoria last week. Police patrolled the area and after a short foot pursuit, arrested a 21-yearold woman in Soling Avenue. The man was seen running into bushland and a search of the surrounding area commenced. Following an extensive search, the 29-year-old man was located at the intersection of Andrews and Castlereagh Roads at Cranebrook and arrested. Both the man and woman were charged with a range of offences and were refused bail ahead of their first court appearance via audio visual link on Wednesday.
Penrith pioneers 150 years since first meeting of Penrith Council ALENA HIGGINS
1
50 years ago this month, the first meeting of Penrith Municipal Council took place. At the time, Penrith was home to just 836 people and didn’t include the areas of Castlereagh, St Marys or Mulgoa, which would eventually join Penrith to form Penrith Council in 1949. In 1963, the Emu Plains precinct to the west of the river was added, finally forming Penrith City Council as we know it today. Penrith’s first Mayor, James Riley, together with his eight fellow Aldermen, as Councillors were then known, began building the first framework of local government, passing bylaws to improve public health, safety and wellbeing. The forebearers, all men, as women were unable to be elected, championed education and improved sanitation, successfully advocated for electric power and introduced a waste collection service. Penrith was officially proclaimed a municipality on May 12, 1871 and the inaugural Council meeting was held on

July 18 in rented premises, with the first chambers opening on Henry Street in 1881. During her Mayoral Minute at Monday night’s Ordinary Council meeting, Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown applauded the men and woman past and present who have championed the city.
“What this history tells us, is that the people of Penrith have always been pioneers and innovators,” she said. “The fact that our community petitioned to become a municipality in the late 1800s shows they saw the huge potential of their town and wanted to have a say in their future, just as we do today.” The first Aldermen included a cross section of the Penrith community and were made up of a local butcher, two publicans, a storekeeper, a farmer and a boot maker. Mr Riley served as the local magistrate for 30 years while the undertaker was the town clerk. “They were people way ahead of their time and they knew that Penrith was going to go ahead when the road over the Mountains went through ... they knew they had to capitalise on it and they built a base for us to work on and I think they’ve set the ground rules that we follow,” said current Councillor Kevin Crameri. Councillor Ross Fowler said “we’re certainly an aspirational city”, citing past and present projects, including the soonto-be Science Park, North-South Rail Link, Airport and Penrith Lakes.

Life starts at Thornton Park
“The village is pet-friendly and the neighbours are friendly too. What more could I want?” – Jim & Bonnie, Residents

Jim moved in to Thornton Park with his little dog, Bonnie. Since then, they’ve been enjoying all the benefits of village life. It was important to me that I find a pet-friendly retirement home because I live with my 12-year-old rescue dog Bonnie, a little Tenterfield Terrier. From the very beginning, Thornton Park was excellent. I found a beautiful apartment that suited my budget. We have a cleaner who comes once a fortnight to help keep the place looking good, and the social aspect is great too. I’m always meeting people. There’s a bus trip every week. There’s a movie night. We have our happy hours and our get togethers so we can catch up and talk about life. If you want to go out, the location of the village is so convenient. You’re only about 500 metres from Penrith train station and about 600 metres from the big Westfield. The village has a residents’ lounge and function areas which are free to hire if you want to have a birthday party or a family get-together. Next door, there’s a residential care home, which is comforting to know in case your circumstances ever change and you need more support. What else can I say except that I’m very happy here? And Bonnie’s very happy too. If you’ve ever thought about retirement living, don’t hesitate to contact us for an information pack and to book your obligation-free tour. It just might be the best thing you ever do.

Ladies raise the bar in once male dominated profession EMILY FESZCZUK
A
new national snapshot shows that women now make up 53 per cent of solicitors in Australia and outnumber male solicitors in all states and territories. The 2020 National Profile of Solicitors in Australia, released on behalf of the Conference of Law Societies, shows a 45 per cent increase of practicing solicitors in the past nine years, with more women continuing to enter the profession. Local female lawyers who have lead the way say the legal profession is changing, but it still has room for improvements. Director of Amanda Little and Associates, Amanda Little said working in a male dominated industry has been challenging but has improved. “The legal industry I started in over 15 years ago, is not the same as it is today... young female lawyers have opportunities and the ability to be mentored by other female lawyers who fought their way through the ranks to hold positions of authority,” Ms Little said. “I have had both positive and negative Local lawyers Natalie Ballard and Amanda Little are inspiring the next generation.
experiences in my career related to my gender and still do today – but it is getting better.” With 21 years of experience in the industry, Director of Novus Law Group and General Counsel at Borger Cranes, Natalie Ballard said the increase of women needs to be solidified. “There are more female owned practices in the area, however as an industry we need to try and keep the female lawyers as we see too many leave the profession after having children or becoming disillusioned with it all,” Ms Ballard said. “Our incomes, especially locally, are still not on par with our male counterparts and there needs to be a move to support flexible work practices to allow working parents to share the load.” Ms Little said her firm prides itself on supporting local professional women and wants more females in positions of authority. “Penrith has a growing and inspiring professional female community, and it is wonderful to see the growth in equality within our district,” she said.

A MESSAGE FROM MELANIE OUR FUTURE IS LOCAL 34 years ago this month, my family moved to Australia and settled in St Clair. Growing up, I have fond memories of walking around local areas in St Clair, Colyton, and Erskine Park. Since then, I have lived in the East end of Penrith and am more than familiar with the challenges and opportunities our local community experience. COVID 19 has shown us how important a strong local community is. I have witnessed local small businesses, who are barely staying afloat, put the wellbeing of their customers ahead of profit. I have seen our community switch to purchasing from small family owned and operated small businesses where they could. For me, staying close to home has meant exploring new local footpaths, parks, and
sporting fields. This has reminded me how important it is that we plan for a future where we have accessible and improved public spaces to create meaningful community engagement. In our family, like many in our community I know how important getting out and about is for mental and physical wellbeing. Having spaces that you can use without having to drive, spaces that offer locals of all backgrounds and abilities the chance to connect, is the future. I am excited to give you a real say in the upcoming Penrith City Council elections. As an independent candidate, I will listen to the voice of our community and work with you to bring about positive change.
RETHINK THE POSSIBLE If you have managed to catch some of the Olympics over the last few days, you may have seen or heard of Anna Kiesenhofer, winner of the Women’s Cycling Road Race. In cycling, the riders form a group called a Peloton. The Peloton is a group of riders who stay together most of the race and take advantage of slipstreams and share the workload. It is common that near the end of the race one of the riders
in the Peloton breaks away and wins the race. Not this time! Anna decided early on, to get in front of the Peloton and with the assistance of a couple of others, managed to stay ahead for the entire race. A different approach, a great result. Sometimes you need to rethink how you approach a challenge and not just stick to what you have done in the past.
One of the things people often say to me is “it doesn’t matter who I vote for nothing changes”. Now more than ever, if you believe in the strength of a local community, a local future that benefits as many in the
community as possible maybe it’s time to rethink how you vote. Penrith was built by pioneers, people who saw the potential of this city. Now is the time for a new way of thinking to pioneer Penrith into the future.
INDEPENDENCE MATTERS Having sat on numerous boards I know how important it is that you avoid conflicts of interests, listen to your members/customers and make sure the organisation (profit and not for profit) is sustainable long into the future. As a councillor it is important to me that I can be transparent and represent the best interests of the people of Penrith and Penrith City Council. I am passionate about advocating for the local community and a firm believer that in local government, the people’s voices must inform and shape local decisions. In 2015 the St James Ethics Centre launched something called the Politicians pledge, it was voluntary and something I firmly believe in. If you signed the pledge one of the things you would commit to, is advancing the public interest before any personal, sectional or partisan interest. While the pledge didn’t quite get the traction hoped for, running as an independent means I can demonstrate this commitment. If having someone independently represent you matters, then I am excited to give you that choice at the upcoming election.
Like, follow and share an independent’s journey

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
with Daniel McKinnon
COMPLETE L E G A L & C O N V E YA N C I N G
Complete Legal & Conveyancing • 4704 9991 • Suite 11, 354 High Street Penrith
It’s not just a house, it’s a home – or is it? This week, Daniel McKinnon continues his special report into the situation facing residents in Orchard Hills. Section 56 (1) (a) of the Land Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Act 1991 Section 56(1)(a) of the Act says: “market value of land at any time means the amount that would have been paid for the land if it had been sold at that time by a willing but not anxious seller to a willing but not anxious buyer, disregarding…any increase or decrease in the value of the land caused by the carrying out of, or the proposal to carry out, the public purpose for which the land was acquired…” The rationale behind Section 56(1)(a) is that landowners achieve ‘market value’ in a vacuum. They avoid copping a devaluation of their property as a result of the relevant project (which can occur if land becomes useless by virtue of the project, for example a strip of land immediately adjoining a freeway) while at the same time preventing landowners from receiving an artificial windfall in circumstances where the project increases the value of the land (for example due to rezoning that often accompanies a project like in the case of Orchard Hills). On one view, this is the fairest approach because a landowner receives the same market value compensation as they would have received had the infrastructure project never existed reducing or eliminating any chance of under-compensation. The problem is, however, that the actual market is the true determiner of price – and in Orchard Hills, the market is saying that the price is much higher than the artificial value that the Act is producing. What makes matters even more challenging is that property prices in western Sydney have been climbing organically for a number of years, in Orchard Hills and a range of other areas including Castlereagh, Llandilo and Mulgoa as large blocks of land with potential for future housing development become more and more scarce in the Sydney basin. Further, as residential housing developments continue to tentacle to the north and south of Penrith, rural residential properties are

becoming harder to find which has the inevitable effect of forcing prices up. We spoke to lifelong Orchard Hills local Jesse Vella who owns a property that the government is acquiring. Jesse had this to say: “If we sell to the government at the price they are offering we won’t be able to afford to buy a similar property in the area because prices have gone through the roof. I don’t think that is fair. I’m really happy for other residents in the area whose land values have gone up. They’ve worked hard over many years to build what they have and they deserve the uplift in value. I just don’t think the landowners whose properties are being acquired should lose out.”
“The challenge for law makers is achieving balance”
When asked his opinion on what he thinks needs to change to improve the plight of landowners he said: “My number one concern is reinstatement. If the government is going to forcibly acquire my land they should at least have to provide me with enough compensation to enable me to purchase a similar property in the same suburb. If the government was required to pay reinstatement costs, I would be happy. I would sell to them for a price that would enable me to move to another property of a similar type in the Orchard Hills area.” The Concept of ‘Reinstatement’ Reinstatement refers to a landowner being compensated so as to put them in the equivalent position they would have been in had the government never acquired their land. To Orchard Hills residents,
this means paying them a sum of money sufficient to enable them to move off their land and purchase a property nearby of a similar size and with similar improvements (which would arguably cost close to $5,000,000 using recent sales as a guide). The Act is not aimed at reinstatement, however. To the contrary, Section 56(3) of the Act makes clear that compensation on a reinstatement basis will only be awarded under very limited circumstances. Section 56(3) says that if land being acquired is used for a particular purpose and there is no general market for land used for that purpose and the owner genuinely proposes to continue after the acquisition to use other land for that purpose, then the market value of the land is taken, for the purpose of paying compensation, to be the reasonable cost to the owner of equivalent reinstatement in some other location. The example used in the second reading speech when Section 56(3) was introduced to the Parliament was the hypothetical acquisition of a church. An old church might have limited market value, particularly if it is heritage listed or subject to some other classification that limits its commercial utility. The unique nature of the use of the land however, and the absence of a ‘general market’ for the sale of churches, might justify the enlivening of Section 56(3) enabling a valuer have regard to all of the reasonable costs to the owner of equivalent reinstatement at an alternative location including the increased costs of acquiring land of a similar nature. In this example, the key point to consider is that the land is used for a particular purpose and that there is no general market for land used for that purpose. In other words, the use of the land needs to be fairly unique. This section of the Act arguably does not apply to Orchard Hills landowners because the purpose their land is used for is fairly common, mostly residential dwellings and farming, and there is a general market for land used for that purpose as most properties in the area are of a similar nature. Our research did reveal, however, that
often properties which are the subject of a government acquisition are the least valuable properties within an area. For example, acquisitions for the WestConnex project occurred along Parramatta Road. Many of the landowners in that case argued that the compensation they received on a “market value” basis may have been representative of the market value of the acquired land, but they could not afford to buy another property in the same suburb for the same price. Properties on Parramatta Road were roughly 25 per cent less valuable than non-Paramatta Road properties due things like traffic noise and disturbance. The Impossible Task of Achieving Balance Invariably, the challenge for law makers is achieving balance. Inequalities in legislation like the Act are inevitable and cut both ways. Take for example a situation in which the government is acquiring only part of a landowner’s property. In the case of a partial acquisition, claims for “injurious affectation” are common and permitted under the Act. Injurious affectation claims are for compensation for a reduction in the market value of land adjoining the land being acquired caused by reason of the partial acquisition. For example, a landowner on the Northern Road having only a small portion of the front of their land acquired would be entitled to make an IA claim for traffic noise and disturbance however their nextdoor neighbour, who is similarly impacted by the infrastructure project but has not had any of their land acquired, would not (because the Act applies only to landowners whose land is being acquired). So where do we go from here? Firstly, what is clear is that the problem lies not with an evil government machine hell bent on undercompensating landowners. Valuers’ hands are tied when it comes to not factoring in the uplift in value caused by the potential rezoning of Orchard Hills South. Don’t miss next week’s edition for the conclusion of Daniel McKinnon’s special report into this issue.

Oxley Park: Man arrested after bizarre sexual touching incident A man has been charged after sexually touching someone without consent in Oxley Park. About 11.30am on Sunday, July 18, a 19-year-old man and his 19-year-old friend were walking on Brisbane Street, Oxley Park. They were approached by a 33-year-old Oxley Park man who allegedly told them that he was locked out of his premises and needed to contact his flat mate. The 19-year-old man was assisting the 33-year-old to make numerous attempts to call his flat mate when he allegedly came into close proximity and the 19-year-old could feel his erect penis rubbing on his thigh. The 19-year-old stepped backwards but could not move any further due to a brick wall, before the 33-year-old allegedly moved forward again and was moving his body up and down against the younger man’s leg. The older man then stepped back and the 19-year-old and his friend returned home where they contacted police. On Tuesday, July 20, detectives identified the man and arrested him at his home address.

A man has been charged after assaulting police and breaching COVID restrictions in Penrith this week. About 11.50am on Monday, July 26, police were patrolling High Street, Penrith when they sighted two people not wearing their masks. When asked to put the masks they had on, the woman complied but the 45-yearold Penrith man ignored the direction. Police approached the man asking for his identification, when he allegedly ignored the officer and continued walking. The officer stood in front of the man when he allegedly pushed the officer to the chest and attempted to run. The man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged.

job. The Erskine Park resident has accepted a job as an Operations Manager at one of the world’s largest waterparks. At just 23-years-old, Ms Stewart, who is passionate about keeping active, has already achieved a lot in the aquatic industry. “I started as a lifeguard at Wet’n’Wild Sydney in 2015 and we became Raging Waters in 2018,” Ms Stewart said. “I quickly climbed the ranks before becoming an Aquatic Manager, which means I work full time rather than seasonally.” Loving her role at Raging Waters Sydney, Ms Stewart said she came across the job at Atlantis Aqauventure Waterpark by chance. “I love the thrill and excitement of work, and sharing my passion and knowledge to improve water safety education so I wasn’t searching for another job,” she said.

ifeguard Renee Stewart is diving into the deep end as she prepares to move to Dubai for her dream
“I just saw the opportunity come up on our lifeguard page and knew the park had undergone a major expansion with multiple slides so thought I would apply, and ended up getting it.” Ms Stewart said she was shocked that she was successful but is now preparing to move overseas during the pandemic. “I am jumping at this opportunity, especially with COVID and I am really excited to take the next step in my career,” she said. “It is a bit of a challenge at the moment but the Atlantis team have been absolutely amazing and I have the 12th of August as the date to fly out.” With no end date on her contract, Ms Stewart said she is excited to stay in the United Arab Emirates until she decides to return home or move on. “Raging Waters really developed me from start to finish as I have grown in my aquatic career so I am so thankful to them and very sad to leave,” Ms Stewart said. “I have a big team of 245 lifeguards that I am going to miss but I have never worked anywhere else and cannot wait to see what this next adventure brings for me.”

I am pleased and proud to share that Ripples Leisure Centre has established itself as a leader in the health and fitness industry. Over the past 12 months, Ripples recorded a 60 per cent increase in engagement for its Fitness Passport service and program delivery – one of the highest results in metropolitan Sydney and across the country. The Fitness Passport program sees participating employers offer employees and their family members affordable gym memberships, which provide access to a wide range of facilities. Ripples centres in Penrith and St Marys put a greater focus on Fitness Passport in late 2019, when Penrith Council transitioned the aquatic and leisure facility to an internally managed model. This result speaks volumes of the dedicated staff at Ripples who, despite dealing with the challenges of a pandemic, have demonstrated resilience and determination to continue delivering quality programs for the benefit of our community. Since the COVID-19 pandemic start-
ed, the innovative team has launched its popular telehealth services and pivoted its schedule by creating a virtual platform, which offers a timetable of health and wellbeing classes, group fitness classes, squad sessions for swimmers, and engaging activities for children. These sessions are now running as part of the Free Ripples Virtual Programs Series, designed to keep the community connected and promote healthy lifestyles in lockdown. Residents can find out more about this great opportunity at www.ripplesnsw. com.au. Please note, our on-site facilities are currently closed in accordance with the latest COVID-19 restrictions. I would also like to remind residents of the Penrith Local Government Area that due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the September Local Government Elections have been postponed. Council elections will now be held on Saturday, December 4 2021. Stay safe and well.

ducation Week 2021 is being celebrated this week (July 26-30), a little differently than normal. This year’s theme is ‘Lifelong learners’ and celebrates education as a lifelong journey from before a child enters an early childhood setting, progressing to primary and secondary school, and continuing their learning journey into adulthood; learning a trade, entering tertiary education, or the workforce. Continuous learning is critical for success throughout life and everyone can be a lifelong learner. From the first days in child care to postschool pathways, the NSW education
system is preparing young people to be agile thinkers and lifelong learners. Learning can look different for individual students and the NSW education system is equipped to provide learning support for all of its students. Learning often takes place beyond the classroom and we should celebrate all types of learning that occurs at all levels across our education system. For more details on Education Week, which is primarily being celebrated virtually this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, visit www. education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/ education-week.

Early start to education journey E
arly childhood education establishes a foundation for numeracy, literacy and other learning skills for children entering Kindergarten and beyond. Recent research has highlighted that quality education before entry to school is key to better results in literacy and numeracy in later years, and that inquiry based learning is important in helping students apply their learning to the real world. For the Pre-Kindergarten child, inquiry based learning draws on experiences through play and transferring these skills and knowledge to new areas of learning. As part of the College Learning Culture at Penrith Anglican College, students are taught that “learning is learnable” and that all learning should prepare students to thrive in the real world. In the College’s Pre-K program, learning is invited through inquiry-based investigation and play. In this inquiry-based setting, every child is given the chance to succeed and progress. Teachers guide students by building a play-based, interactive and organic environment for children to explore areas of interest and develop their learning skills. Children are encouraged to be eager, engaged and interested learners.
The Pre-K program at the Penrith Anglican College has been highly successful, with teachers noting growth and development in language acquisition and discussion of ideas, setting the groundwork for success when they reach Kindergarten. Early Stage One Coordinator Mrs Joni Coleman is proud of the way the Pre-K teachers enable the learning experiences
for all students. “Every day is like a celebration as they cater to the varied cultural, educational and diverse needs and abilities in such imaginative and expert ways,” she said. The results speak for themselves with most students equipped and ready to tackle Kindergarten at the end of the year. “You can see the joy on the students’
faces, as they discover, create, improvise, and imagine. I can’t wait to meet these students when they start Kindergarten,” she said. Penrith Anglican College is taking enrolments for 2022. If you would like to enquire or learn more about their Pre-K program, visit www. penrith.nsw.edu.au/learn.

The school has three support classes that are categorised as multicategorical and autism and already have an enrolment of 21 students in grades K-4. Focusing on play-based learning and reflecting the quality school vision, children are always the only hope the human race has; teach them well, the students are able to learn in a way that recognises their individual strengths and personalities. Assistant Principal for the Support Unit, Michelle Scott, has been instrumental in creating a culture of inclusivity and fun. “I listen and respond to the needs of the students and their families so that every single day, each student is known, valued and cared for,” Ms Scott said. Ms Scott specialises in play-based learning and has used this pedagogy to support students to communicate and show their learning creatively. “All of the students love coming to school and this is evident each morning as they are greeted by their teachers and
School communities deserve our praise Education Minister Sarah Mitchell has praised everyone in school communities for how they’re dealing the challenges presented by COVID-19 as well as other issues over the past few years. “Our schools have successfully managed droughts, bushfires, floods and a pandemic, and it is all thanks to the efforts of all the people who make up each individual school community,” she said. “Education Week has been a highlight of the NSW public education calendar for more than 60 years and this year, more than ever, our schools deserve to be celebrated.”

a strong philosophy towards inclusive education. As a part of the school organisation, the students are able to participate and engage in all aspects of the school and celebrate their achievements with all of their friends at school.

TURNING BACK TIME The Penrith Tourist Information Centre that was located in the car park of Panthers Leagues Club was something of an icon in the local area. Often also referred to as the Visitor Information Centre, the building was a regular stop for those heading towards the Blue Mountains, providing relevant tourist information on day trips, weekends away and experiences that could be undertaken in Penrith and nearby regions. It opened in the Panthers car park back in 1990. It would have a 24-year life in that location, with the building closing for good in June 2014. The building itself however survived, relocated to the Penrith General Cemetery, just inside the Cox Avenue entrance at Kingswood. While tourism and visitor information is still available directly from Penrith City Council, the Internet has in many ways made Tourist Information Centres redundant.

TROY DODDS
I
t’s the game NRL fans have been eyeing off for most of the season. Penrith and Melbourne in a battle that could give us the strongest indication yet who will hoist the Provan-Summons trophy on Grand Final Day. But it’s not quite the game we expected. The COVID-19 situation across the country sees this match being played at Suncorp Stadium, a venue worthy of such a clash but far from the AAMI Park base it was originally set down for. And more importantly, the game has been robbed of some of its biggest names. The Panthers will be without their best forward in James Fisher-Harris along with starting hooker Api Koroisau, while halfback Nathan Cleary is also still missing. Isaah Yeo, Brian To’o and Tyrone May will also sit this one out, as injuries start to bite Ivan Cleary’s squad.
SATURDAY, JULY 31 | 7.35PM | SUNCORP STADIUM | REFEREE: ASHLEY KLEIN There’s no question this is an uphill battle for Penrith against a Melbourne team that is close to full strength. Regardless of the result here, it is likely to be a very different scenario when these two sides clash again at some point in September or October. Truth is the Panthers have banked enough points in the first half of the season to almost guarantee themselves a top four finish, so a sluggish period now does the side little harm while they wait for their big guns to return on the road to the Finals. Penrith fans may have to be patient for a few weeks while the side treads water. But while most have now written off the Panthers this weekend, I still think there’s some hope for a surprise win. The Cowboys certainly came to play against the Storm last weekend and found a way to really frustrate Craig Bellamy’s men
by coming up quick in defence, and keeping the ball moving in attack. Penrith should follow a similar path this weekend – keep the ball alive when in attack with plenty of second phase play, and defend like your life depends on it when you don’t have the ball. Melbourne are very good at dominating the early parts of games to a point where they grab such a commanding lead that they can control the rest of the match and set the tempo for the contest. The key therefore for Penrith is ensuring they stay in the game for the first 20 minutes – if it’s close at that point, it really is anyone’s game. I’m sure coach Cleary would largely be focused on effort this week. He may not have his best troops at his disposal, but all he can ask for is effort. Deliver that and you never know what might happen. Let’s be real here: there’s a chance the
PANTHERS
KAYO FOX LEAGUE ABC 702 2GB 873
Storm will run away with this one, but the statistics say that’s very unlikely. When you look at the most game-defining numbers, Penrith and Melbourne sit either first or second in the competition. What one side doesn’t dominate (Penrith are sixth in line breaks, a category Melbourne leads), another does (Penrith is second in total kick metres, Melbourne is 12th). But perhaps the most telling statistic that points to a close game is this: We have the best attacking team in the competition up against the best defensive side. Penrith have still only conceded 185 points this season, the only side below 200. The Storm meantime have scored 652 points, the only side above 600. They say defence wins footy games. I guess we’ll find out how true that is come Saturday night. An upset? Why not. Tip: Panthers by 1.

WITH THE MASKED PANTHER
KOROISAU CONUNDRUM ! It’s safe to say that the NRL, Penrith and Api Koroisau were keen to put the bubble breach scandal to bed very quickly last week, and it appears they’ve successfully done so with the drama failing to spark relentless media coverage, partly due to the deeply personal issues also at play. Within an hour last Friday night, three statements were issued – one from the NRL, one from the Panthers and one from Api and Amy Koroisau via Koroisau’s management company. It ensured every angle was covered, and the focus of the NRL world could return to on-field action. ! The long-term impact of Api Koroisau’s indiscretions on his career will be interesting to watch unfold. While he’s $35,000 poorer and copped a two-game suspension, just how he bounces back professionally and personally will be closely watched by Penrith officials. “I’m determined to become a better partner, father and protector, and hopefully rebuild trust, and earn back your love and our family. I will work hard every day moving forward to show my wife, my children, my team and the rugby league community that I am not defined by my mistakes and I will grow from this,” Koroisau said last week. !
James Fisher-Harris has officially left the Penrith bubble and will likely miss three games, returning for the clash against Souths on August 20. There was no way the tough forward was going to miss the birth of his child, but the restrictions in place mean that he’ll have to quarantine when he returns to Queensland, hence missing more matches than he usually would.
! Former Penrith Panthers forward Frank Winterstein is auditioning for the role of Village Idiot and will probably get it. He attended last week’s selfish, disgusting protest in the centre of Sydney, and has been sprouting rubbish about COVID-19 on his social media profiles. We can be grateful he’s on the wrong side of history, but certainly far from proud that he ever wore a Panthers jersey. Let’s hope the current Penrith players who follow him on Instagram don’t agree with any of his garbage.
Three statements regarding Apisai Koroisau’s suspension were issued within an hour last Friday evening.
!
Co-captain Isaah Yeo is expected to return for next week’s game against the Roosters after suffering a serious concussion against Brisbane last weekend. Yeo will sit out this weekend’s Grand Final re-match with Melbourne out of an abundance of caution and in line with concussion protocols.
!
The NRL is resigned to the fact that the rest of the season will be played in Queensland, which means Penrith’s two remaining home games against Souths and Wests Tigers won’t be played at Panthers Stadium. It’s a huge financial blow to the club as they would have been two certain
sell-outs. There’s still hope of returning for the Finals, but I’m told the NRL is now seriously looking at alternate locations for the Grand Final, with Suncorp Stadium and the MCG the leading contenders.
of the Mountains. Watch this space – things are very uncertain at present and the Panthers are very unlikely to pay overs to keep him.
! Nothing stops for a COVID test, not even a live Panthers media conference. Penrith Media Manager Evan Sieff, who is currently in quarantine in Queensland, had to step away from the press conference on Monday so he could get a swab. ! Rumblings are certainly getting louder about the future of Viliame Kikau. I told you earlier this year that the 26-yearold’s form was troubling Penrith officials and that he needed to lift his game. He’s certainly been better in recent weeks, but he’s likely to command big dollars when he comes off contract at the end of next season. There’s talk several clubs, including North Queensland, would be interested in luring the big Fijian away from the foot
! Tevita Pangai Jnr will make his debut for Penrith against the Roosters next weekend as his smash and grab mission with the club begins. ! Winger Brian To’o is hoping to be back before the Finals after being forced to undergo ankle surgery on an injury he picked up against Brisbane last weekend.

is two-point field goal made him the unlikely hero of Penrith’s gritty win over Brisbane, but fullback Dylan Edwards knows a performance for the ages is in order tomorrow night. While both sides are sitting on the same amount of competition points, Penrith go into Saturday’s Grand Final re-match against the Storm as underdogs for the first time this season. With several big name players missing including Nathan Cleary, James FisherHarris, Brian To’o and Isaah Yeo, the Panthers will need to go to another level and then some, if they are to shock the league and make a statement Saturday at Suncorp Stadium. “You know you have to step it up in quality if you want to compete against teams like the Storm. You need to go to another level when you play the
Melbourne Storm,” said Edwards, who will captain the side for the first time on Saturday night. “Everyone is really excited; you always want to play in these sorts of games. Obviously Melbourne has set the benchmark at the moment, so it’s exciting to get an opportunity to play against one of the top teams in the comp.” After dropping two of their opening three games this season, Melbourne have remained undefeated since losing to Penrith at BlueBet Stadium in the first Grand Final re-match back in Round 3. Since then, Craig Bellamy’s men have strung together 15 consecutive wins and possess the best attack in the history of the NRL. On the flip side, Penrith have also won a league-best 16 games this season and claim the best defence in the NRL. Edwards said the Panthers will be doing all they can to nullify Melbourne’s many weapons. “The Storm take their opportunities when they come and we’ll be looking to
limit their opportunities,” the 25-yearold said. “You just look at their halves and their hookers through the middle there. They are obviously great ball runners and play eyes up footy, they play what they see. They are a big key to what they do and we’ll be looking to limit them as much as we can.” If Penrith are to contain Melbourne and win, they’ll need to put in a better performance than what they tossed up last weekend. Despite getting the chocolates against lowly Brisbane, Penrith failed to score a try in the first half and allowed a season-worst 66 missed tackles. Edwards assured Panthers fans his side’s defence will be much improved this week despite the enormous challenge in front of them. “You don’t forget how to tackle in a week, so we just have to focus on all areas that we missed like working more together as a team and individually just making our tackles,” he told Extra Time.

My gold, silver and bronze medal for the year’s best players
Brought to you by
joel caine I
n the spirit of the Olympics and with the NRL home and away season winding down, what better time to hand out medals for the best performed individuals thus far. Much like the 100m sprint final being the most hyped event, I believe the same would be said for the best player in any given NRL season. While we’ve got the Dally M to help decide that in the real world, we don’t always get the right winner, so I’ve decided to hand out my gold, silver and bronze for the best performed players thus far. Despite missing a fair chunk of the season, Manly’s Tom Trbojevic has been by far the most impactful player of this season. What he has achieved since his return from a hamstring injury is as good a run as we have seen. Manly are considered a genuine premiership threat now, but before Trbojevic was in the side they had just one win from their first five games, and we’re looking like potential wooden spooners. In just nine games for the Sea Eagles this year the dynamic fullback has contributed to 30 tries, and he isn’t just dominating at club level, also taking home the Wally Lewis Medal for player of the State of Origin Series. He’s genuinely putting together one of the all-time great seasons. Taking home silver is Penrith’s Nathan
Cleary. His season has been so strong that he also has a strong case for gold… he’s just happened to line up in the same heat as rugby league’s Usain Bolt. Nathan hasn’t lost a game in 2021, and before injury he was well on his way to the Dally M and the NRL’s top point scorer. Penrith can’t get him back quick enough. For bronze, I’m giving it to perhaps the most consistent player in the game, Brian To’o. The Panther has set a new standard for outside backs, much of Penrith and New South Wales’ success can be credited to his contribution at the back of the field. He leads the run metres comfortably despite missing two games. But what’s most impressive is his post contact metres, which is over 1500. For context, most players in 2021 haven’t got near as many for regular run metres. Having picked the best three players, next week we’ll take a look at who takes home the medals from a coaching perspecTom Trbojevic has had a stunning season, starring for Manly and the Blues. e’s one of the Panthers confirmed to be leaving at the end of the year but, before he heads north, Kurt Capewell wants to bring a premiership to Penrith. Despite the club’s many attempts to keep him at the foot of the Mountains, the 28-year-old will return home to Queensland to link up with the Broncos next season. While his short time as a Panther has been more than memorable, there’s one thing he wants to secure before he leaves… an NRL title. “It would be awesome to go on and win the premiership this year and pay the club back for everything they’ve done for me,” Capewell told Extra Time. “It’s been an awesome time here at Penrith and I’m keen as to finish it on a high note that’s for sure.” Earlier this month, Capewell signed a rich three-year deal with the Broncos that will see him, along with outgoing Souths halfback Adam Reynolds, become one of the faces of the rebuilding franchise. And while the Red Hill club has had its fair share of struggles in recent years, the Queensland Maroons star is up for the chal-

lenge of turning them around under coach Kevin Walters. “I’m looking forward to the Broncos next year, it’s a good chance for me to get back up home and go to a great club in Brisbane,” Capewell said. “They have been a powerhouse club in the NRL for a long time but, unfortunately at the moment, they are not where they should be. Hopefully I can help turn them around.” But, before Capewell packs his bags for new pastures, he has an enormous job to do at Penrith and that all starts with helping them get the win over last year’s Premiers this weekend. While the Panthers will be down on troops due to injury and suspension, Capewell said it opens the door for a number of Penrith’s younger guys. “I have full belief in every member of our squad that we can beat anyone, but Melbourne are flying at the moment,” he said. “It’s a challenge I’m definitely looking forward to and it’s a great opportunity for some of the other squad members to get a run against the team on top of the ladder and the powerhouse that Melbourne are. “We’re just working on getting better each week but if we can knock Melbourne off with a fair few of our players out, it will be really good.”

him away from attractive offers at Brisbane and Cronulla. In his 19th season as Melbourne coach, he’ll lead the Storm through an 18th finals campaign this year. He’s inspired the club to nine Grand Finals, winning five. Of his 490 games, he’s won 343 at 70 per cent. The men ahead of him in terms of games coached – Wayne Bennett, Tim Sheens and Brian Smith – aren’t anywhere near that strike rate. He’s handled the departures of Cronk, Slater and Smith like they didn’t matter. He’s won a Premiership while displaced from their Melbourne base. He’ll chase a 16th straight win when Melbourne plays Penrith on Saturday, despite missing names like Finucane, Papenhuyzen, Grant and others for big parts of the season. As those two young U20 players can attest, Bellamy makes sure Melbourne remains the gold standard for maintaining NRL excellence. That’s why he’s paid four times as much as some other head coaches. That’s why the Melbourne Storm made the most important signing of the year this week. That’s why you’d need your head read if you think Melbourne are going to be anything but a Top 4 contender for at least the next five years.

T
wo young Melbourne players sat stunned after a dressing down from their Under 20’s coach. They’d broken some club rules, been caught out and suspended by the Storm for a couple of games. Feeling bad but at least glad it was over, little did they know it wasn’t even the beginning. Their age coach finished by telling them someone else wanted a ‘chat’. In strode Craig Bellamy. He wanted to know why names like Cronk, Slater and Smith could follow the rules but they couldn’t. He wanted to know why they thought they were bigger than a club that had won multiple NRL Grand Finals before they’d even cracked first grade. Expletives landed in their ears like upper cuts to the chin. Bellamy finished by doubling their ban and telling each player he didn’t want to see them for a month. It’s a great story about a man who has driven Melbourne’s culture and success since he landed there in 2003. You could mount an argument he’s been rugby league’s most influential figure since. This week Bellamy signed on for five more years at Melbourne. He’ll head coach again next year, before considering his role each year thereafter. At some stage he’ll ‘relax’ into a coaching coordinator role or something similar. What a huge coup for Melbourne to keep

ll things going well, new recruit Tevita Pangai Junior (TPJ) will play his 100th first grade game against the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Friday, August 20. Except he’ll be wearing Panthers colours and running out with the likes of Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Viliame Kikau, hoping to help record another important victory for his new foster care family. Meaning, that although Penrith may not be his permanent home, the supporters, coaching staff and players will accept him with open arms and treat him like one of their own, even if it is for only a few short months. It’s important to note that while I don’t think TPJ is our saviour who will help Penrith win every game he plays in, I do think he is an astute signing for these upcoming end of season matches and Finals series. More importantly I think he’ll make a big difference, especially on the field. For a start he’ll be fresh and hungry to show his new teammates and supporters, that he’s not just coming to the Panthers for a holiday. Any doubts anyone had that he would not be accepted by his new teammates was answered when the question was put to five-eighth Jarome Luai on ‘The Sunday Footy Show’ last weekend. “The boys all know what sort of talent he is,” said Luai.
“I can’t wait to meet him and see what he can bring to the team.” So what exactly does TPJ bring to the table, apart from another cool acronym. Well how about three tries, 46 tackle breaks, 713 post contact metres, 48 offloads and 423 tackles made. All this in just 15 games for the Broncos this season. I personally can’t wait to see this wrecking ball in action next week. Now on my signal TPJ, unleash Hell! What caught my eye last week I can’t help but admire the way the Roosters are winning matches they have no right to. They are certainly impressing many pundits with their tenacity.

What TPJ brings to the table at Penrith
What game I’m looking forward to Well, doesn’t take a genius to work out that the match between the Panthers and the Storm, despite both sides missing some big guns, is going to be an absolute belter! My Tips for the week Eels, Tigers, Cowboys, Rabbitohs, Raiders, Panthers, Bulldogs, Sea Eagles.
Tevita Pangai Junior will debut for Penrith next week. Photo: NRL Photos.
The final word Based on what I saw over the weekend, there are six teams which can realistically win the 2021 NRL Premiership and they are teams ranked one to six. You can put a line through the rest.

! The glittering NRL career of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is officially over, after a request to return home to New Zealand immediately was granted by the Warriors this week. It means the game against Penrith earlier this month was his final game in the NRL, with the 28-year-old heading to rugby union next year. Tuivasa-Sheck finishes his career with 195 NRL games. He won a Premiership with the Roosters in 2013. ! Melbourne Storm co-captain Dale Finucane will leave the club at the end of the season after a signing a four-year deal with Cronulla. Meantime, the Sharks have extended the contact of Matt Moylan, who will remain at the club until at least the end of the 2022 season.
! Supercoach Craig Bellamy has agreed to stay with Melbourne on a new long-term deal. Bellamy will coach the Storm in 2022 and will then decide whether he stays in the gig or moves into a different role. ! Newcastle has re-signed Kurt Mann for a further two seasons. The 28-yearold has played in a raft of positions for the Knights over the past few seasons, and has played 52 games for the club. ! The Wests Tigers will be without Luke Garner (ankle) and Alex Seyfarth (knee) for an extended period, with the pair requiring further attention to the injuries they picked up last weekend. The club doesn’t have a timeline for their returns at present.

CARS, GIRLS AND WESTERN SYDNEY EMILY FESZCZUK f you are looking for a way to escape reality, award-winning author Felicty Castagna has just released a new book published by Pan Macmillan Australia. The proud Parramatta author explores a complicated friendship, a road trip in a stolen car and defining stories in her latest novel, Girls in Boys’ Cars. Completing the book over a period of four years in between other projects, teaching and parenting, Felicity told the Weekender that the story centres around two adventurous young women.

“We have a young 17-year-old girl Rosa who attends school in Parramatta and her friend Asheeka, who are frustrated by a lot of the boys in their community and the things they do to embarrass girls,” Felicity said. “They decide to steal one of their boyfriends’ cars and somehow end up going on a giant road trip in sort of Thelma and Louise style but once they are on the road the story becomes one about a complicated friendship.” Her first novel for young adults, The Incredible Here and Now, won the Prime Minister’s Award for Literature and her recent book, No More Boats was a finalist in The Miles Franklin Award.
Felicty said the new story about two very urban girls interacting with regional New South Wales was inspired by her interest in car culture. “Some of my other books revolve around car culture as well and I was interested in what happens when girls go out on the road,” she said. “I wanted to explore what might be the difference for girls leaving and different issues they might have while out there compared to boys or men.” Featuring real landmarks in western Sydney and regional Australia, Felicity said she wanted the fiction to have elements of real life. “I wanted the book to be quite funny be-
cause often I think women in the western suburbs are not depicted as people who are very witty or funny,” she said. “Both girls have a very wicked sense of humour but at the same time it has serious themes as the book opens with the protagonist in a juvenile jail for crimes she committed.” With her book suited to both young people and adults, book lovers should get the page turner now. “You can order it online but if you can buy it from your favourite book store I am sure they would love the support,” Felicity said. Felicity Castagna’s Girls in Boys’ Cars is available now at all good book stores.

At the movies... PREVIEW The Last Duel TBA A gripping tale of betrayal and vengeance set against the brutality of 14th century France, ‘The Last Duel’ explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France’s last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals. Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court.
When Carrouges’ wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer), is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a gruelling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God’s hands. ‘The Last Duel’ is based on Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France, which brings the turbulent Middle Ages to life in striking detail. When etiquette, social aspirations and justice were driven by the codes of chivalry, the consequences for defying the institutions of the time – the Church, the nobility at court, a teenage king –

Aquarian author Lewis Carroll wrote, “I can’t go back to yesterday because I was a different person then.” And that’s you this week … consistently inconsistent! Love, loyalty, cooperation and compromise are the New Moon buzz words, as one half of you wants to snuggle up close with someone special. While the other half longs to be footloose, fancyfree and spontaneously solo. So try to find the sweet spot between cosy companionship and invigorating independence.
New Moon week is the ideal time to ditch bad daily habits and start afresh. Work, health, fitness and food choices are the main areas where you need to make some long overdue changes and adjustments – the sooner the better. Try to release pent up Piscean frustrations via a chat with a close confidante or a trusted family member. Spending some quality time with your favourite fourlegged friend (in the great outdoors) will also help to lift your spirits during this period.
Monday looks frustrating, as plans proceed slowly. The weekend New Moon highlights your leisure, entertainment and happiness zone. So it’s a wonderful week to catch up with friends, see the latest movie or pick up a hobby you’ve always been interested in. Just make sure you do something that makes your heart sing! Be inspired by actress/ comedienne/producer (and birthday great) Lucille Ball, “It’s a helluva start, being able to recognise what makes you happy.”
This week’s stars favour home and hearth, as the New Moon and Mercury highlight your domestic zone. It’s a good time to clean and de-clutter your living space or tackle an overdue DIY project. Venus (your patron planet) links up with Uranus, so Bulls can expect a busy and bamboozling time. Relationships will be unpredictable and life will certainly speed up. You don’t work well when others try to hurry you along, so have the confidence to cruise at your preferred pace.

Mercury and the New Moon activate your neighbourhood zone, so find fresh ways to connect with those around you (at home, at work, at play or in your local community). Short trips and education are highlighted, plus expect plenty of phone calls, snail mail, texts, tweets and emails. You could also benefit financially from an innovative idea, a creative friend, a social media post or an online promotion. Use your Gemini versatility to venture into exciting new territory this week.
You’ve been talking about saving for something big (like a car, holiday, home deposit or renovations) for a while. This week, with Mercury and the New Moon firing up your finance zone (and impulsive Uranus aspects) resist the urge to be extravagant with cash and careless with credit. In this uncertain pandemic climate, be a canny Crab who is cautious with money. Plus do an inventory on your inner wealth, as you nurture your self-esteem and consolidate your core values.
This week you could pivot professionally, fall in love very fast or lightning flashes of inspiration could suddenly strike. But make sure you communicate clearly or there’ll be some crazy chaos along the way. The New Moon and Mercury light up your sign so it’s a fabulous time to initiate a pet project, refresh your physical appearance, review your personal belief system or embark on a COVID appropriate adventure. Don’t just dream about it – get out there and do it as soon as you can!

HOROSCOPES
Have you been selling yourself short lately? This week your ruler Mercury links up with Saturn and Uranus, so stop being a critical fusspot who engages in negative self-talk and sabotages success. With Mars and Venus in your sign, it’s time to be the bold and beautiful Virgo you were born to be. Your motto is from birthday great, actress and producer Lucille Ball. “I have an everyday religion that works for me. Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line.” What a message!

Prepare to be pleasantly surprised! The fiery New Moon reignites a special dream that’s been languishing on the sidelines. Plus the lively Venus-Uranus link turbo charges creativity or speeds up a romantic connection. If you are stuck in a professional or relationship rut, don’t dwell on the negatives. It’s time to innovate and re-calibrate. Be inspired by Libran actress Kate Winslet, “The good and bad things are what form us as people. Change makes us grow.”
Tuesday’s Venus/Uranus trine brings a rush of energy and a fresh perspective to a stale romance or a floundering friendship. There’s no denying you’re a smart Scorpion but are you making the most of your cerebral talents? This week it’s time to don your thinking cap and give yourself a vigorous mental workout, connect with work mates and keep them up-todate with your professional plans. When it comes to a friend or colleague, expect the unexpected!
Be careful your spontaneous spirit doesn’t land you in unexpected trouble! You’re keen to communicate but, if you say the first thing on your mind (especially at work) then you could find yourself regretting your haste. With the New Moon and Mercury activating your adventure zone, many Archers are keen to head off on an overseas trip, an interstate interlude or a weekend getaway. But COVID is still causing travel and aviation chaos, so you’ll have to be patient.
Monday is the most challenging day of the week, when Saturn frustrates plans and stymies progress. Then the weekend New Moon stimulates your intrigue zone, so no secret is safe as you uncover clues and pick up on cues that other people miss. Be careful what you unearth because you could stir up issues from your own less-than-perfect past. Lust and loot also loom large, as you work through issues involving trust, intimacy, shared possessions or joint finances.

Funerals in the time of COVID: Difficult time for grieving families
Don’t neglect your health while you’re working from home
S
T
adly the increase in COVID cases has once again necessitated an extended lockdown in Greater Sydney and no-one can avoid being affected. Our thoughts are with those who are unable to work or have had their lives severely disrupted, let’s hope it does not go on for too long. Again, funerals are subject to severe restrictions and this no doubt will impact families who need to farewell someone close to them. The restrictions mandate that only 10 people may attend a funeral and those people must sign in on the QR code, wear a mask at all times and socially distance (4sqm rule). For larger families it can be heartbreaking to exclude some family members and to make the unenviable decision of who to exclude. To include as many people as possible there are a number of actions that we can take as funeral directors. Here are a few of them: • Live Streaming of the service, it doesn’t matter where in the world people are, they can view the service live. • The non-attending family and friends can send in a video message and we will compile them and play them during the service. • A printed Order of Service, it can be mailed to the non-attendees and we
can post it on our web site, as we also can do with a photo story. • Sign the virtual Memorial Book. • Leave a personal tribute on our e-Tributes web page There are more ideas that we will gladly discuss with you to personalise a service. Funerals are important both for the deceased and of course for those left behind and we recommend that a meaningful service is held at a time close to the death and perhaps a larger memorial service can be arranged at a later date that can include all family and friends. If we can be of assistance please call me on 4735 6900.
o some people, working from home (WFH) can be fun and relaxing. However, it is important not to neglect the importance of being active and exercising. WFH has increased the convenience of not commuting to work, allowing more time to be spent at home, but ultimately it is reducing the number of daily steps and making you sit and work for longer. As a result of sitting in the same chair (or bed) during work time at home, it can often increase the risk of developing leg and foot pain. As circulation is not optimised due to the limited mobility, people can often start to develop leg and lower back pain, as well as headaches – all of which are secondary to immobility and lack of movement. Here are a few ways you can prevent this when you’re WFH: Getting up every 30 minutes Standing up and moving every 30 minutes is important. Not only does it help with physical health, but mentally it can help in resetting the brain and prevent a build up of stress. By cutting the stress and mental overload cycle, you can return back to work with a clearer mind and perform better in your work tasks. Changing your work environment every time you get back to work helps in
refreshing your mind and mental thinking. 10 minute stretching session Taking 10 minutes out of your day to do a quick stretching session can help improve your circulation and mobility. The human body requires constant effort to stay working and moving as optimally as possible. This can be as simple as: calf stretches, shoulder rotations, lower and upper back range of motion exercises. Daily walks Leading a sedentary lifestyle can impact cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal health and much more. The decrease in metabolism causes less energy burning and an increase in weight. This puts you at risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol issues and many more!

Obesity in our pets is a major issue that can cause huge health dramas
50
WW44771
O
besity is the most common nutritional disorder seen in our dogs and cats. Recent figures show that up 41 per cent of dogs and 32 per cent of cats are considered to be obese. Even more alarming is that, on average, an overweight pet will live two to five years less than a pet with an ideal body weight. Causes: As with people, obesity is caused by overeating. Most obesity is simply caused when a pet eats more calories than they need. The excess calories are then stored as body fat. While we have limited control over a few contributing factors including the breed of the pet, sex, hereditable traits, and age, we can control our pets’ over-eating and exercise. A pet will become obese due to: • Excessive calorie intake (over-eating) • Inappropriate use of human snacks and treats – did you know that one small plain biscuit given to a dog is equivalent to one hamburger consumed by a human. Do we ever just eat one? • Lack of exercise • Medications that stimulate appetite (cortisone) • Decreased energy requirements – desexed pets are linked more frequently to obesity. By removing
organs that produce hormones your pet’s metabolism may be slowed. Adjusting your desexed pet’s diet and exercise regime will keep your pet trim and healthy. Health problems will begin to appear when body fat exceeds 15 per cent above ideal body weight. This may include: • Diabetes Mellitus • Cardiovascular disease (heart disease) • Joint problems and musculoskeletal pain (arthritis) • Increased surgical and anaesthetic complications • Neurological disorders • Respiratory problems • Cancer and tumours • Skin problems • Reproductive disorders • Decreased quality of life Healthy snacks: If you are trying to assist your pet in losing weight, the first place to look is at their diet, including snacks. Remember that one sausage that you gave to your pet last night? It is equivalent to you eating six donuts! Instead, why not try giving your pet , carrots, cucumbers, apple and ice cubes (on a hot day). Vets can tailor a weight management program for your pet.

Don’t neglect senior citizens, they could be your best customers!
I
WW43971
n the current economic climate, it is vital we look after our customer base. Things have changed, these days, the customer has to almost win an arm wrestle to get the focused attention of a sales assistant. If you are a senior citizen, the job is even harder because you also need overcome the verbal and mental pats on the arm and the “you poor old thing” attitude. But the people who are members of this age-group now have a greater discretionary disposable income than all the other groups combined. When they walk into a business (or shop online), they are
there to do business, not to experience a social event. If they walk out the door it is unlikely you will see them again because, the fact is, you don’t carry a unique product and they will go elsewhere for their purchases. As a member of this group myself, here is a short list of my pet peeves: 1. “Hello dear”; 2. We have a backlog of customers seeking help, what is your first name? (it’s MR.) 3. If you have trouble making a selection, I can help you. (It’s a touchscreen with pictures!) 4. You just hold your card like this and tap here (I know, it says “Tap Here”!) Train your staff to understand that today’s older age person definitely knows more than they do and has more money to spend than they have. If enough of them go, eventually the sales staff go and maybe your business. Need help with this? Go to the Business Connect website, look at the Western Sydney Business Centre advisor bios and book a call back from one of the advisors or call Western Sydney Business Centre direct on 4721 5011. I can also help prospective NDIS providers.

Toyota on the right path Numbers tell the story as leading car brand kicks goals on hybrid vehicles NATHAN TAYLOR
T
oyota has achieved a significant milestone on its path towards a zero-emission future, selling the brand’s 200,000th hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) in Australia. A total of 210,817 Toyota HEVs have been sold in this country to the end of June 2021, led by Camry, RAV4, Corolla and Prius. The most recent 100,000 sales took just three years with demand accelerating as customers capitalise on the benefits of money-saving economy and low emissions. It took until mid-2018 for Toyota to pass 100,000 HEV deliveries, almost 17 years after the original Prius hybrid was launched in 2001. Over the journey, Camry has proven Australia’s most popular HEV with 75,998 sales, followed by the RAV4 (48,632), Corolla (40,143) and Prius (20,778). So far this year, Toyota is on track to eclipse its annual sales record of 54,335 hybrid electric vehicles, achieved last year. To the end of June, Toyota has sold 34,036 HEVs – a total that accounts for more than

85 per cent of all electrified models sold in Australia. The total represents 28.6 per cent of
Toyota’s overall sales in 2021. Leading the way in 2021 is the RAV4 with 14,821 HEV sales, or 72.8 per cent of total RAV4
demand. The RAV4 Hybrid made history in August 2020 when 4,405 units were sold in that month, making it the first HEV to top Australia’s monthly national sales charts. Buyers of the Corolla hatch and sedan have also favoured HEVs with 7,906 cars sold in 2021, representing 57.2 per cent of the model’s total volume. The hybrid nameplate is even more popular among Camry sedan buyers at 79.5 per cent (4,979) and Yaris Cross at 61.4 per cent (2,588). Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, said the rapidly growing popularity of hybrid electric vehicles supported the company’s commitment to expanding its range. “Our combination of HEV technologies deliver performance, with great fuel economy and low emissions, that is resonating with buyers more than ever,” he said. “Being both affordable and practical, we see Toyota hybrid electric vehicles as an ideal powertrain choice for consumers looking to save money at the fuel pump while reducing their environmental impact.”

Antonis is back in red and black NATHAN TAYLOR
A
Terry Antonis will return to Western Sydney for the next A-League season.
fter several years abroad “learning about himself”, the Western Sydney Wanderers are welcoming back Terry Antonis for the 2021/22 A-League season and beyond. Antonis joins from K-League club Suwon Samsung Bluewings, who he joined from Melbourne Victory in 2019, going on to win the Korean FA Cup in his first season at the club. A familiar face to the Wanderers faithful, Antonis played in the Red and Black during the 2016/17 season including the club’s third AFC Champions League campaign and in the A-League Finals Series. The 27-year-old midfielder will join the Wanderers from Korea in the coming weeks with his wife and young daughter to link up with his teammates for pre-season training. Antonis said he was excited to be coming home to western Sydney and continuing to grow as a footballer. “I’m 27 now, this is an important moment for me, I’ve learned a lot about myself on and off the field, I want to keep learning every day, so to be able to put that into training and into games,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed my time in Korea for the past couple of years, it was good to be at a big club in Korea but I am looking forward to coming home.

“Obviously being from the west it is very exciting to be coming home, I spoke to the coach (Carl Robinson) and I spoke to JT (CEO John Tsatsimas) and I want to win things with the Wanderers, I want to give all I can for the club and help us get to the Finals.” While it has been some time since Antonis has been in Australia due to travel restrictions, he said he looked forward to coming home to see his family again. “It’s been two years since I was last in Sydney,” Antonis said. “To see my brother (George Antonis) is now in the U20s squad at the Wanderers Academy is brilliant, it would be awesome to one day play on the same pitch together. If he can make the same steps I did, I hope it can happen one day and I can’t wait to see him and my family again coming home to Sydney.” Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said it was fantastic to welcome home another son of western Sydney to the club. “Welcoming Terry back to the club is fantastic, it brings home another western Sydney footballer to play in front of family and friends and is very important to what we are continuing to build at this club,” he said. Meanwhile, the Wanderers have also added defender Johnny Koutroumbis to next season’s roster. The 23-year-old joins Western Sydney on a two-deal deal after spending five seasons at Newcastle.

Finals beckon for our Giants NATHAN TAYLOR
G
iants Netball’s path to the minor premiership has been decided, with the competition leaders finally learning when they’ll play the remaining rounds of the Super Netball competition. With no matches being completed last weekend due to teams having to shift to a new Queensland hub, mid-week matches are the highlight of the revised fixture, which officially got underway on Tuesday. Following a six-day break after their Round 12 match against Melbourne on Wednesday, the Giants will next take on the Sunshine Coast Lightning this Tuesday, August 3 at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena. The Giants will then close out the home and away season when they meet the West Coast Fever for the second time, with the match to be played at University of Sunshine Coast on Saturday, August 7 at 2.30pm. The remaining Giants matches will be broadcast live on free to air TV on either 9GEM or Channel Nine, meaning local

fans in lockdown will not miss a second of the action. The league also confirmed dates for the 2021 Super Netball Finals Series, with semi-finals to be played back to back on Saturday, August 14. The Preliminary Final will be contested on Saturday, August 21 before the Grand Final on Saturday, August 28. The league is working through venues for the Finals Series, which will be held in Queensland. “We have worked closely with all eight teams, as well as broadcasters and other partners, to lock in the fixture for the remaining three rounds of the home and away season,” Netball Australia CEO, Kelly Ryan said. “There is no doubt it has been challenging, but we continue to adapt under the circumstances. “I’d like to thank our teams, staff, umpires and stakeholders, including broadcasters, for their sacrifice and determination.” When the Weekender went to print on Wednesday afternoon, the Giants were midway through their match against the last-placed Vixens in Brisbane.

Chance to race New program aims to find future stars of RC racing NATHAN TAYLOR
C
oming up on its 20th year, Penrith District Nitro Racing (PDNR) has produced some of Australia’s most talented RC drivers, and a local disability service provider hopes to emulate their success by winning an Australian title. While the cars may be small, the industry is not. RC racing is slightly more intense than the toy RC cars you get from your local Kmart store. An industry that employs over 1,000 people Australia-wide, each year there are tens of thousands competing for fun, while others will go as far as the world titles. Prior to the pandemic, this year’s IFMAR World Titles were scheduled to be held in Brisbane for the 44th year of running. It’s an event that draws over 300 of the world’s best drivers, and 1000 people with teams, officials, media, pit crew, and spectators. While not aiming for a world title just yet, Live and Learn Disability Group is hoping to create some future stars of the sport with a new program designed to

Having been involved in motorsport his whole life, Live and Learn Disability Director, Rob Vide, knows what it takes to get to the very top. “If you look at every sport, no one got to the number one spot without an immense amount of dedication. Without living and breathing their chosen sport, there is no Ash Barty, Daniel Riccardo, Tim Tszyu or Dawn Fraser,” he said. “With that in mind, we’ve created a program for the people we support that will help them achieve the pinnacle of this sport. SPORT FOX ADDS TO MEDAL TALLY Story continued from » p.64
Fox has had a long rivalry with Gold medallist Funk for many years, often sharing the podium together at paddling events all around the world. Fox said while there is a fierce competitiveness between them, their friendship is even stronger. “There is a rivalry but we’re friends first and foremost, and I think we’re in a sport where we encourage and support and celebrate all the good runs that happen and that’s what makes us better as well, that rivalry,” she said. “I’m so pleased for her (Funk), she made me emotional as well because her coach passed away at the Rio Olympic Games, so for her to be here and stand on top of the podium is very special for her.” Following the race, pictures showed Fox being consoled by her mum Myriam Fox, who is also her long-time paddling coach. “Mum’s the one that said to me ‘Jess, I’m still so proud of you, you’ve won a medal, it’s so special’,” Fox said. On Thursday afternoon, Fox was set to compete in the Women’s Canoe event.
Around The Games
CYCLING: Competing in her third Olympics, Penrith Cycling Club star Amanda Spratt received a DNF (Did Not Finish) racing in the Women’s Road Race event last Sunday afternoon. The Penrith-born cyclist was one of 19 cyclists who were unable to complete the gruelling 147km Fuji International Speedway course in hot and humid conditions. SOFTBALL: Penrith City Softball Association member Taylah Tsitsikronis has failed to win a medal at her first Olympic Games. Tsitsikronis and her Aussie Spirit team had a disappointing Olympics, winning just one out of five games to finish outside of the medals. Perhaps Australia’s biggest Achilles heel was their attack, scoring just five runs in five games. The lone game they won against Italy, they prevailed 1-0 with our very own Tsitsikronis scoring the winning run. This is the first time in Olympic Games history that the Australian Softball Team have failed to medal. BASKETBALL: Penrith Basketball junior and Dallas Mavericks rookie Josh Green played a small role in Australia’s 84-67 win over Nigeria last Sunday night.
The 20-year-old played just under six minutes in the 17-point win, collecting two offensive rebounds in the process. Green enjoyed some more game time against Italy on Wednesday night and will no doubt feature in Australia’s next game against Germany this Saturday. FOOTBALL: Western Sydney Wanderers star Keanu Baccus came off the bench in Australia’s 2-0 win over Argentina in the opening game of the Men’s Football tournament last week. The talented midfielder also played 17 minutes in Australia’s 1-0 loss to Spain last Sunday. He was expected to get some game time against Egypt on Wednesday night. CANOE SLALOM: In his second Olympic campaign, Penrith’s Lucien Delfour has reached the Semi Finals of Men’s Kayak event, which will be held on Friday afternoon in Tokyo. LOCAL OLYMPIANS STILL TO COME… DIVING: Penrith-born diver Melissa Wu will aim for Gold in the Women’s 10m Platform event this Wednesday, August 4 from 4pm. The Final will be held on Thursday afternoon. RUGBY SEVENS: Jamisontown’s Madison Ashby made her Olympic debut on Thursday when she played a role in Australia’s matches against host nation Japan and China. The 20-year-old will next take the field at 11.30am on Friday.

t may not be the colour she wanted orr perhaps deserved, but Leonay’s Jessicaa Fox has added to her growing Olympicc medal tally with Bronze in the Women’ss Kayak at the Tokyo Olympics. n The 27-year-old multiple World Champion ut tried her heart out late Tuesday afternoon but d unfortunately suffered a pair of two-second penalties during her run, which ultimatelyy cost her victory. d Germany’s Ricarda Funk took home Gold n after an impressive run of 105.50 seconds on ut the Tokyo course. Spain’s Maialen Chourraut was second in 106.63 seconds, while Foxx recorded a time of 106.73 seconds. After finishing first in the Semi Final, Foxx st was the short-priced favourite to win her first n Olympic Gold medal after claiming Bronze in the event in 2016 and Silver in 2012. al Speaking to Channel Seven after the Medal d Ceremony, Fox said despite being frustrated o with herself, she was immensely proud to collect another Olympic medal. al “It’s special to win a third Olympic medal d and obviously I was dreaming of that Gold medal but a mistake at one of the last gatess cost me and that’s probably where the tearss
came from [after the race], a bit of frustration,” she admitted. “At the end of the day, to be on the podium again is just so special.” Story continues on » p. 63
