THE HEARTBEAT OF PENRITH

Thank you, Ray It was the very emotional end of an era on Tuesday when St Marys Police boss Ray Filewood left the station for the fi nal time. Superintendent Filewood retired exactly 40 years to the day since he started as a probationary constable. Family, friends and colleagues paid tribute to the long-serving offic er on Tuesday at a “walk out” ceremony.

olice have been left shocked after a man simply trying to help someone he thought was in need was bashed, leaving him with internal bruising and fractured ribs. The 27-year-old victim was driving along John Batman Avenue in Werrington County in the early hours of Sunday morning when he saw a man lying in the gutter. Fearing the man was injured or requiring assistance, he stopped his car and approached the man to render aid.

It was then that the man lying on the roadway punched him in the chest. “A second man approached the 27-year-old from behind and both men began assaulting him,” Police said in a statement. “Officers have been told the 27-year-old heard the alleged offenders discuss taking his car, before leaving it and making off in their own vehicle.” The victim returned to his home and was then taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment. He was suffering from fractured ribs, internal bruising and superficial grazes. The victim was an Ambulance paramedic driving to work at the time of the incident.

NSW Ambulance Commissioner, Ray Creen said such violence should not be tolerated. “Not only is what happened to our paramedic on Sunday a disgraceful act of violence, but it was reprehensible to pretend to need medical assistance only to assault the person coming to your aid,” he said. “We will be assisting NSW Police with their investigation and would like to encourage anybody in the community who may be able to assist with this inquiry to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.” Members of the community have been left stunned by the incident, turning to social media to vent their anger.

“How sad for that young man trying to do the right thing, look where it got him,” Linda Norman said on the Weekender’s Facebook page. “What is wrong with people? Were they raised that way? Disgusting,” Clare Gollner said. Another local resident said she no longer felt safe: “I walk past that street with a six-week-old and four-year-old. Now I don’t feel safe in the area after reading this. So disappointed that people could be like this.” Anyone with information is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
