Vaccine reaches Penrith Major moment in pandemic fightback as Nepean vaccination hub opens EMILY FESZCZUK

N

epean Hospital has joined the country’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout program with the doors to its vaccination hub opening on Monday. Healthcare workers from across the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) started to receive some of the first supply of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine. Sharon Williams, who is an Aboriginal staff member, was one of the first to be vaccinated at the hub, which is located near the hospital. With Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people considered one of the more at-risk groups when it comes to the virus, Ms Williams said she will be encouraging others to get vaccinated. “I want to show to my family, my mob and my local community that getting vaccinated is safe,” she said. “I’ll be encouraging everyone I know to get vaccinated as it’s a great way to keep our community protected.” NBMLHD Chief Executive Kay Hyman also rolled up her sleeves to get the vacci-

nation and said the opening is a welcome milestone in the COVID-19 response. “I want to extend my sincere thanks and

gratitude to all our staff who have, for over a year now, gone above and beyond in delivering care,” she said.

“We have all lived under a cloud of uncertainty for so long but what is now certain is this vaccination is the community’s best way to return to normal and help protect people from getting seriously ill.” Junior Medical Officer, Dr Joe Jabbour said the decision to get the jab was easy given he works with some of the most vulnerable patients at Nepean Hospital. “I consider this another way of caring for my patients,” he said. “It’s rewarding to know that I’ve done what I can to help protect them from the virus.” Meanwhile, local GP clinics that will deliver the COVID-19 vaccine from Monday have been confirmed. The roll-out of the vaccine will step up from March 22, with Phase 1B to begin. Phase 1B includes vulnerable groups, such as older people and people with certain underlying medical conditions. Local venues for vaccinations confirmed include Werrington County Medical Centre, Kingswood Medical and Fitness Centre, Astley Medical Centre St Marys, First Care Medical Centre at Cranebrook, Cranebrook Doctors and Derby Street Family Medical Centre at Kingswood.

The world’s a little brighter S

elf-indulgence alert: Today’s column puts politics, opinion, sport, cancel culture and whatever else is going on in the world in the back pocket, just for now. Life has taken something of a personal, wonderful twist over the last month after my wife Stacey and I welcomed our little girl, Edie, into the world on February 28. The time since has been in equal parts exhilarating and daunting – something all you veteran parents out there can relate to, I’m sure. People have babies in their thousands every day. It’s nothing new, nothing groundbreaking, but when it happens to you it feels like the entire world has paused for just a moment. All of a sudden, Edie is our universe – even if she doesn’t know it yet. She came four weeks early and weighing just 2.1kgs – certainly not what we expected when you consider both her parents stand at six feet tall. She has some catching up to do. What a champion she is though – arriving before the NRL season to avoid any future birthdays being held in the Western Grandstand of Panthers Stadium. So yes, life has changed and I’ve quickly learned babies do not share my love of routine and schedules. That’ll take some getting used to. But with every smile, every new reaction and even every cry, we fall in love with her more. A moment of frustration, tiredness or exhaustion can be wiped away in an instant when she falls asleep on your chest, or suddenly shows off a newly acquired skill (usually something as impressive as burping or having a bath without screaming).

Index

“Dirty nappies are life and baby stores are the new Bunnings”

Her arrival has put plenty into perspective too. The staff at Nepean Private Hospital were nothing short of extraordinary, as were those who helped us from across the road at Nepean Public. It was a reminder of how incredibly lucky we are in this country to have the health system that we do, albeit one we often complain about. The follow-up services, most government-funded, are a reminder that beyond the Canberra and Macquarie Street bubbles and the antics of Question Time, we do some extraordinary things as a society that you wouldn’t even know existed without going through this process. It puts into perspective too those not as lucky as my wife and I. While I have always felt devastated for those who lost babies through either miscarriage or stillbirth, that is much further pronounced now and is looked at through a totally different sphere. And I guess that proves that all of this is

an education, and one that I presume will keep delivering in the years and decades to come. For now, dirty nappies are life and baby stores are the new Bunnings. And I can’t finish this column without mentioning how brilliant my wife has been through all of this. In a month where we’ve celebrated International Women’s Day and witnessed women stand up across the country in huge numbers at marches, I’ve watched the most important woman in my life go on something of a roller coaster ride – both before and after Edie’s arrival. She’s taken every step in her stride, whether it be unexpected stints in hospital, the inevitable sleep deprivation or the fact that a tiny human now relies on her to continue breathing and surviving. Modern parenting may see dads involved way more than in the past, but there is little that can take away the physical and emotional toll on a new mother. I’ll forever be in awe. Back to the issues of the week next edition – I promise.

Roadwork never ends Key Mulgoa Road upgrade nearly complete, but workers are going nowhere ALENA HIGGINS

T

he first leg of the Mulgoa Road upgrade is nearing completion, but the full project won’t be finalised for another 20 years. A Transport for NSW (TfNSW) spokeswoman confirmed the upgrade between Union Road and Museum Drive including the Railway Bridge is expected to open in the coming months. “The upgrade will open to traffic mid this year, weather permitting, and will reduce congestion and delays during morning and afternoon peaks, improve access to public transport, provide safe and effective pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, and allow upgrades of other sections of Mulgoa Road in future,” she said. “Remaining work involves building the medians, road pavement construction, landscaping, and completing the wearing course and associated line marking and sign posting.” The works, which began in December 2018 and are being jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, involve installing an additional lane in

both directions and providing a longer left turn lane along Mulgoa Road for motorists turning westbound onto the Great Western Highway. Other improvements include upgrading the Mulgoa Road/High Street intersection and the T-intersection of Jane Street with

Castlereagh Road to increase capacity, widening the rail underpass to allow three lanes in each direction, and adding bus priority at the High Street intersection. But residents will have to wait two decades for the entire project to be complete.

“This upgrade is one section of a 6.5 kilometre upgrade of the Mulgoa Road/ Castlereagh Road corridor between Glenmore Parkway, Glenmore Park and Andrews Road, Penrith,” the spokeswoman said. “Subject to funding, the upgrade would be developed and delivered in stages over the next 20 years.” Works will involve widening Mulgoa Road/Castlreagh Road to three lanes in each direction, upgrading intersections, adding bus priority lanes, building separated pedestrian and cyclist paths and landscaping. “TfNSW is currently carrying out investigation work along a number of streets at Jamisontown and the M4 ramps to help inform the detailed design of a 1.18 kilometre section of Mulgoa Road between Jeanette Street and Blaikie Road,” the spokesman said. “Funding dependent, future delivery of the Mulgoa Road/Castlereagh Road corridor will involve upgrades between Jamison Road and Union Street, Museum Drive to Coreen Avenue, Coreen Avenue to Lugard Street, and Lugard Street to Andrews Road.”

Fresh charges for priest 80-year-old hit with 13 new charges for alleged historic assaults on children ALENA HIGGINS

F

ormer St Marys priest Richard Cattell has been charged with fresh child sex crimes. Police laid 13 charges on Cattell, 80, late last week over the alleged historical assault of two boys in Sydney’s west and on the South Coast. It comes after detectives from Nepean Police Area Command commenced an investigation in August 2020 into the alleged offending, which is said to have occurred between 1986 and 1991. Cattell was in charge of Our Lady of the Rosary, St Marys, between 1982 to the early ‘90s. Police will allege Cattell sexually assaulted the boys – then aged between 11 and 17 – over a five-year period while in his care. Last week, the 80-year-old faced Penrith Local Court from a Malabar facility and was bail refused. He faces four counts of ‘indecent assault of person under 16 – under authority’, two counts each of ‘sexual intercourse with person aged 10-16’, ‘homosexual inter-

course with male 10-18’, ‘incite person under 16 to an act of indecency’, ‘assault and act of indecency’ and one count of ‘solicit male under 18 to commit homo-

sexual intercourse’. The new charges mark the latest instalment in Cattell’s long-running reign of terror.

In July 2019, Cattell was sentenced to 30 months behind bars with a nine-month non-parole period for offences against five victims between 1968 and 1991. Three of the victims, consisting of four boys and a girl, were abused at St Marys, the youngest was just six-years-old at the time. In 1994, he served two years for indecent assault against a 14-year-old boy during his time at the Liverpool parish. He was incarcerated again for 18 months in 2015, this time for the sexual and indecent assault of an adolescent alter boy in the late ‘80s during his time at Our Lady of the Rosary. During his sentencing hearing in 2019, Penrith District Court heard Cattell would use his power as parish priest to force victims to sleep naked and shower with him during sleepovers, telling them they were “special” and not to tell anyone because “no one will believe you”. He would also abuse victims on trips away, often using his Mollymook holiday house as a base. His matter was adjourned to May 5. Sexual assault and violence helpline: 1800 737 732.

ocal residents will take up the fight to help protect the ABC from funding cuts and threats to its independence. Representatives of the not-for-profit ABC Friends NSW & ACT, Beverly and Barry Redshaw, are opening a Western Suburbs of Sydney branch of the organisation to continue their lobbying work in the local area. The Cranebrook couple got involved with ABC Friends 12 years ago, joining the Blue Mountains branch while living in Lawson. Since moving locally, they have been inspired to begin their own branch. The pair surveyed interest in the area

by chatting to local voters at the last Federal Election. “The reaction from the public, and from the voters, was very positive, and showed a lot of interest,” Mr Redshaw said. “We were considering whether we’d go ahead and try to set up a branch here … but that really concentrated our interest.” The not-for-profit was established in 1976 to defend the ABC against funding cuts by the then-current government. Since then, it has defended the ABC from threats to compromise its independence and reduce its funding from both Labor and Coalition governments. The new branch is launching on Saturday, March 27 at Penrith Senior Citizens Centre in Penrith. For more information, email WSoS@abcfriends.org.au.

Chloe takes on the Universe ERIN CHRISTIE

L

ocal dancer and model, Chloe Carter, is hoping to take on the world stage as a state finalist for Miss Universe Australia 2021. The 21-year-old from Werrington Downs had been modelling for four-and-a-half years, and dancing all her life, when she began to consider pageantry and potentially applying for Miss Universe. “I had been following the account on Instagram, and just before the end of January, I actually received a message off them, asking me to apply,” Ms Carter said. “It was the most surreal experience … I was not expecting the email at all,” she said of her placement as a finalist. A dedicated individual, Ms Carter works as a medical receptionist, trains professionally in dance, models, and teaches dance to younger classes at Supreme Dance in St Marys and at Centre Stage Academy in Ropes Crossing. She was able to use these experiences as part of her application for the Miss Universe pageant. “I love teaching, it’s my favourite thing,” she said.

“That was what I spoke about in my application … I said my greatest achievement was being able to still put on a concert last year for my students, despite having COVID-19 restrictions, and everything being online. It was the hardest, most challenging thing … but it was so rewarding at the same time.” As part of her role as a finalist, Ms Carter is expected to raise $2000 for Toybox Australia, a charity that aims to improve the lives of Australia’s sick and disadvantaged children. Ms Carter has so far raised $1300 but hopes to increase this by drawing on the Penrith community to help. “I believe at the moment that’s part of my main point of difference from other competitors, I’m the only one based in western Sydney… so, definitely trying to get involved that way,” she said. The upcoming NSW State Final will see the current finalists reduced to a top 10, who will then head to Melbourne for the next final. Miss Universe Australia will be crowned in September this year. If you’d like to help Ms Carter with her fundraising efforts, visit www.toyboxaustralia.grassrootz.com/mua-2021/chloecarter.

Thain raises concerns with planning policy timeline ALENA HIGGINS

C

oncerns have been raised about a planning policy that only gives neighbours 14 days notice of a proposed development. Under the code – which allows low impact development and infrastructure without the need for a Development Application – nearby residents must be advised in writing 14 days before a complying development certificate is issued, and again seven days before construction begins. However, Penrith Councillor John Thain worries this is inadequate, especially given postal delays. “The State’s obviously trying to speed up some development, but I just think that maybe we’re erring in being too quick,” he said. “There’s got to be some time for consultation with the community or residents that actually gives them an opportunity to look at what is going in and how it might affect them.” A Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) spokesperson told the Weekender that complying and exempt developments save homeowners time and money. “The Codes SEPP [introduced in 2009] helps deliver low impact development and infrastructure without the need for a Development Application if it complies

entirely with the development standards set out in the policy,” he said. “The standards in the Codes SEPP have been set to balance the rights of owners to develop their property while protecting the amenity of their neighbours.” Exempt developments include things like a new fence, deck, rainwater tank, carport or internal renovations, while complying development includes one and two-storey homes, granny flats, swimming pools and office and commercial fit outs. Currently, complying development certificates need to be approved by a council or private certifier, while exempt development does not need any approval. The spokesman said the notification process is for information purposes only and is intended to encourage dialogue between neighbours early in the process before construction begins. “If there are any issues with a development or neighbours are of the view it doesn’t comply with the rules, they need to speak to their local council who is responsible for all compliance and enforcement in their local area,” he said. Another concern for Cr Thain is that the code could be used to “sneak in” boarding houses in the future. Currently, boarding houses cannot be approved as a complying or exempt development and must be submitted as a Development Application.

Social connection: Women’s walk attracting big numbers

ERIN CHRISTIE

T

he Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk is charging ahead, offering a safe space for women to connect socially while exercising each week. Inspired by the success of the Men’s Walk and Talk, which has been running for two years now, local mental health support workers Angela Lambros and Jesseka Flakelar decided to begin the event after seeing the positive impacts on the community. “We did recognise the positive impact that it had for the men, and we just really wanted to create the same safe space for social connection for women,” Ms Lambros said. “It is separate [to the men’s event], but they’ve definitely been our main support, even just doing a post about ours obviously reached so many women.”

The women meet every Wednesday evening for coffee and a walk along the Nepean River. Each week, a sponsor will donate money to buy coffees for attending women. Last week, their donor was Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh. “These types of connecting activities are really important for mental health and supporting each other, so I think it’s a great idea,” Ms McIntosh said. Mental health issues are highly prevalent in Australian women, with one in six experiencing depression in their lifetime, and one in three experiencing anxiety during their lifetime. They also face high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and eating disorders. Social connection is an important aspect of fighting mental illness. The Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk meets every Wednesday at 5pm at Nepean Coffee Club and all local women are welcome.

Push to re-open road Penrith MP seeks community feedback on future of Caddens Road closure EMILY FESZCZUK

I

t’s one of Penrith’s most baffling road closures and now State MP Stuart Ayres is posing the question about the re-opening of Caddens Road. Mr Ayres has launched an online survey to ask locals if Penrith Council should re-open the road between Gipps Street and Bringelly Road. Causing much debate after the road was closed in two sections in the last few years as part of the 2008 Master Plan for the area, Mr Ayres told the Weekender a number of people have raised the issue with him. “Now that Caddens is almost fully developed and the Werrington Arterial is operational I thought it was a good time to ask the public about Caddens Road,” he said. “Penrith Council has already foreshadowed further development in Orchard Hills, and Caddens Road could be an important connection between Gipps Street and The Northern Road.” Mr Ayres said re-opening the road would reduce traffic congestion on Cadda Ridge Drive and O’Connell Lane, which resi-

dents have been campaigning Council to address since the closure. Councillor Tricia Hitchen, who has dealt with complaints from residents in Caddens and surrounding areas, agreed with the push to re-open Caddens Road but said it didn’t seem likely. Not all residents share the same opinion, such as Caddens resident Brian Davis, who is against the re-opening. “I did my research of the Council DCP when I bought back in 2012 and I waited six years for it to close to get relief from all the speeding cars, so it would be devastating if they go back on it,” he said. Despite the mixed views, it seems Penrith Council is unlikely to budge. “The Master Plan for Caddens identified a road hierarchy to best service the residential estate and community,” a Council spokesperson said. “This focused on the development of a new collector road, Cadda Ridge Drive, and the closure of Caddens Road, which is an old rural road with a history of accidents and safety concerns.” If you want to complete the survey to share your opinion, visit www.forms.gle/ UBR7H6umTzriwwrw7.

A man been charged after wilfully and obscenely exposing himself in St Clair last week. About 8am on Tuesday, March 9, it is alleged a 30-year-old St Clair man stopped outside the bedroom window of a 34-yearold woman just a few houses down the road from his own address. It is alleged the man removed his penis from his pants and began to masturbate while calling out to the woman. The woman called the police, and it is alleged he could be seen then walking to the front porch of the house while still touching his penis and calling out to the woman’s 63-year-old mother, who also resides at the location. The 63-year-old woman and her husband both told the man to stop and tried to get him to go home but he refused. Once the man left, the police attended and spoke to the women about the incident. After attending his address, the man was arrested and charged with multiple offences while a personal violence order was sought for the women. The man will appear at Penrith Local Court on Friday, April 23.

Penrith: Women banned from shops after admitting to stealing

Two women have been issued infringement notices and been banned from a shopping centre after stealing from a store in Penrith. About 1.15pm on Friday, March 12, it is alleged a 19-year-old Glenmore Park woman and a 22-year-old Penrith woman went into a clothing store in a shopping centre in Penrith. It is alleged both women placed several items in their bags and made no attempt to pay for the items as they left the store. Security attended and spoke to the women before the items were recovered. About 5pm police went to an address in Glenmore Park and spoke to the 19-yearold who allegedly made full admission of stealing the items.

Penrith: Security guard injured in early morning incident

A man has been charged after intimidating and stealing in Penrith this week. About 4.40am on Sunday, March 14, it is alleged a 36-year-old Werrington Downs man and a 30-year-old Springwood man were walking on Woodriff Street in Penrith. It alleged the 36-year-old man picked up a chair from outside a restaurant and a 74-year-old security guard who was working nearby asked the man to put it back down. The man became argumentative towards the security guard and it is alleged he struck him with the chair, causing him to fall backwards. When the security guard got up, it is alleged the man demanded his property and removed items from his pockets including a small pen style knife. A struggle ensued and the security guard’s hand was cut and bled significantly, as he was on blood thinning medication. The two men left the security guard who then walked to Penrith Police Station to alert police. An ambulance was called for the security guard to be treated at Nepean Hospital and police vehicles patrolled the area looking for the two men. About 5am the men were located on Lemongrove Road, Penrith and were arrested. The 36-year-old man was charged with multiple offences and is set to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, April 26, 2021. The 30-year-old man was not charged, but enquiries are continuing into the incident and police have not ruled out laying further charges.

PORTER KICKS OFF LEGAL ACTION Attorney General Christian Porter is suing the ABC and one of its journalists, Louise Milligan, for defamation. Milligan was one of the first to air allegations that a “senior cabinet minister” had been accused of raping a 16-year-old woman in the late 80s. Days after Milligan’s report, Christian Porter outed himself as the target of the accusation and vehemently denied any wrongdoing. It is understood that Porter’s lawsuit alleges that he has been subjected to a trial by media with no regard for the presumption of innocence and that while Milligan’s report did not name him, it was clear to most reasonable Australians that he was the senior cabinet minister to which the report referred. Defamation is an area of law that aims to provide recompense to persons who suffer reputational or economic loss as a result of rumours, false accusations and other smears published about them. “Publishing” is a broadly defined term and includes verbal comments and statements, written articles, video publications, social media posts and a range of other communication methods. Defamation litigation is usually reserved for celebrities and other wellknown individuals because it is difficult to quantify reputational or other loss or damage to someone who does not exist in the public eye. Defamatory conduct is also far more damaging to a person with a public profile because they often rely on a positive public image to maintain their employment.

Porter alleges that despite not being named as the accused – it was obvious that it was him because Milligan and Co mentioned his age, his seniority in government, his position as a cabinet minister and his gender. Of the limited number of government ministers, only 16 are men, only six are of a similar age to Porter, and only three, including Porter, are senior government ministers. Porter’s application also relies on the fact that instances of his name being mentioned online, including on platforms like Twitter, increased upwards of 500 per cent in the days immediately following Milligan’s report. This lawsuit follows an earlier ‘Four Corners’ report, also published by the ABC, that accused Porter of inappropriate behaviour towards women once he became a politician (noting that the alleged rape is said to have occurred when Porter was 17-years-old). “Truth” is a defence to defamation. Provided that Milligan and the ABC did their due diligence and can prove the veracity of their reports/sources they shouldn’t have a problem defending the proceedings. If they didn’t do their homework however, and can’t prove the accuracy of their reports, then they should feel the full weight of the law – as should Porter and anyone like him who is accused and proven guilty. Either way, it looks like we are going to get the “independent inquiry” that has been repeatedly called for – thankfully it is to be run by the judiciary however, not politicians with an agenda.

CAMILLERI LEARNS HER FATE St Clair woman Jessica Camilleri has been sentenced to a maximum of 21 years in prison for the manslaughter of

Show us some respect Parker Street residents say they’ve had enough of ever-changing roadworks EMILY FESZCZUK

arker Street residents have had enough of the roadworks upgrading The Northern Road and are demanding more communication and courtesy for the duration of the project. The Australian and NSW governments are upgrading The Northern Road as part of the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan but Adam Knowles, who has been a resident for nearly 12 years, is fed up. “Before the work started years ago, we signed an agreement but ever since they have just made changes to the designs, things that are wrong, but they just say it is last minute changes and we get no answers,” he said. “I think it will be good once it is done but we just want what we signed off on… I have talked to people from Smith Street to Maxwell Street and 90 per cent have issues but they don’t care.” For Rebecca Marriott, a resident on the road for over 16 years, safety is the main concern for her family. “The work is pretty much non-stop, so we deal with access in and out of property

changing constantly along with trucks blocking our view and no street access for my kids who walk to school,” she said. “We constantly contact the Acciona project team to express concerns and get promised things like traffic controllers to assist us safely, but it never happens.” Working with delivery partner Acciona on the project, a Transport for NSW spokesperson said it acknowledges and prioritises the community’s concerns regarding the upgrade.

“The safety of residents, road users and workers is a top priority and every effort is being made to ensure residents can access their properties safely via the on-site road crew who are all trained traffic control operators,” the spokesperson said. “Properties adjustments are in the process of being finalised to improve safety for local residents and Transport for NSW will continue to work with residents to ensure these adjustments are decided in agreement.”

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the community needs the road but that residents should be treated with respect as it is built. “Acciona and Transport for NSW really need to lift their game on community engagement,” he said. The upgrade is set to be open to traffic by the middle of the year. To provide feedback to Acciona, call 1800 870 665 or email tnr.community@acciona. com.

fter a couple of postponements due to COVID-19, the team at Lakeside Long Lunch are ready to pop open some bottles for the second round of the food and wine festival. Returning to the Sydney International Regatta Centre on Saturday, April 24, the event will bring together the best wine regions, delicious food and all-day entertainment to enjoy. With the inaugural event in 2019 welcoming 4,500 locals to Lakeside, one of the event’s organisers, James Crowe, said 2021 is set to be bigger and better. “Last year was a difficult and frustrating time for the Lakeside crew with the cancelled events, so it is a relief that it is all locked in and we should be able to have around 7,500 people,” Mr Crowe said. “All of the guys who are organising it are from Penrith and the area needs it now more than ever, so we are so excited to bring live music back to the west, plus support local vendors and suppliers.” With the appetite for big events returning, Mr Crowe told the Weekender the

Checho’s is doing food as well as hopefully Burger

though we had an abnormally hot day in September the first year, we will be providing more shade,” he said. “The island it is on caters to 30,000 people and we will only have a quarter of that as we take being COVID-safe seriously, so people can feel secure.” For tickets, visit lakesidelonglunch. eventbrite.com.au.

goal of cheering overseas, but she said she always had a plan to come home. “I auditioned for the Denver Nuggets NBA team in Denver, Colorado, and it pushed me, challenged me beyond my limits but it was the most incredible, unreal thing I have ever done,” she admitted. “It was another dream come true, but I did want to run my own squad, so I was excited when Laura Harrison from Westside Performing Arts, who manages the Pantherettes, asked if I would choreograph.” Thrilled to be taking on the role, Ms Manning said she cannot wait to add her own flair as the football season kicks off after an unusual 2020. “Penrith Panthers has always been my team and they started my professional dance career in the NRL, so I couldn’t be happier to complete a 360 and now be choreographing for the Pantherettes,” she said. “We didn’t get the whole experience for last year’s season, so I am pumped to be training the girls and I want to entertain crowds with a funky, fresh style while showcasing the real athleticism that is behind it.”

Impressive recycling effort Council congratulates Penrith residents for taking their electronic waste to the right place at our recent e-waste drop-off day on Saturday, February 13. The day was a great success with 976 cars in attendance and a total of 24,293kg of e-waste collected. 2021’s E-waste event saw a huge increase in the number of cars and e-waste collected in comparison to 2020’s event, where it was attended by 638 cars and collected 16,000kg of e-waste. I would like to congratulate the commitment of Penrith’s residents for ensuring their e-waste was taken to the right place where it could be disposed of correctly. Thanks to the community, we diverted 95 per cent of electronic waste from landfill collected on the day, with TVs being the most popular items dropped off. E-waste is growing at three times the rate of any other waste and includes

items such as laptops, hard drives, televisions, stereos, and mobile phones. It’s essential that we recycle e-waste responsibly rather than send it to landfill. Not only does it take up a huge amount of unnecessary space, but some items’ components can be toxic to the environment and local wildlife. Most items can be recycled and turned into new products when taken to the right place for disposal. If you missed out on dropping off your electronic items on the day, you can take your e-waste down to the Penrith Community Recycling Centre. The Community Recycling Centre, better known as the CRC, is free and open all year round, and accepts most electronic items. For opening hours and a list of items that the Community Recycling Centre accepts, visit penrith.city/CRC.

Plugging housing gap New social housing project in St Marys answers demand for properties EMILY FESZCZUK

C

alls for more social housing are being answered with construction starting on a $7.6 million housing renewal project in St Marys. An official sod turn was held last Friday at Lethbridge Street, St Marys, to celebrate the start of the project which, when completed, will provide 21 new homes for vulnerable people in the community. Tom Zeaiter Constructions Project Manager, Andrew Zeaiter, said the team is grateful to be partnering with the NSW Government, NSW Land and Housing Corporation, and Root Partnerships on the project. “The site was previously occupied by two ageing and out-dated cottages and will soon be replaced by 21 new modern social housing apartments,” he said. “These homes will support a better quality of living for people in the area as well as generate vital economic activity and jobs.” With the area re-zoned for higher density development, the complex is designed to meet environmental standards, including a common rainwater tank to deliver water

and energy savings for future tenants. “The four-storey architecturally designed apartment building will consist of 13 one-bedroom and eight twobedroom homes, with basement parking and extensive landscaping to soften the streetscape,” Director of Tom Zeaiter Constructions, Tom Zeaiter said. “All of the 21 new homes are designed to meet accessibility standards, with four of them also adaptable for full accessibility.” Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the new homes will be beneficial for the different groups involved. “Building these new homes will inject money into local businesses and the local economy, supporting about 38 jobs during construction at a time when we need them most,” she said. “It will also help us replace older housing stock which is typically under occupied, costly for the government and tenants to maintain and lack contemporary environmental standards.” With St Marys set to become a transport interchange for the aerotropolis, Ms Pavey said it will complement future developments.

DEAR WEEKENDER NEWS@WESTERNWEEKENDER.COM.AU SUITE 2, 42-44 ABEL STREET, JAMISONTOWN 2750 Weekender’s 30th birthday

Happy Happy Birthday to the lovely Western Weekender! (Editor’s Desk, Weekender March 12). In the past I was stuck with that silly Penrith Press to read the local news, but once the Weekender came, the local news became more informative and more interesting to read. And the Editor is such a friendly man and it’s such a pleasure to read his great columns each week featuring all his quips and quibbles of that present time! All the fun sporting info and local area updates are a great pleasure to read and we would all be lost without this great magazine in our possession. Getting to read it both online and in person makes it easier to catch up on all the news of the week too! So once again Troy, thanks so much for everything and I look forward to the next ‘ish’ of Penrith’s terrific magazine! Until then take care and stay safe and well. DIANA MCCARTY, EMU PLAINS

Apartment concerns

the CBD only to find faulty construction with the owners up for the cost of repairs, and not even able to live in them. Some of the companies have gone broke and taken over by others and none seem to take responsibility for the faults. Let us hope this sort of circumstance does not happen in the many apartments being built throughout Penrith, some seem to be erected so fast you never know what little surprises might lay ahead for buyers. I can only suggest that renters or buyers find out the use by crack date if possible, it’s only reasonable, and if they get no answer then purchase a property 30 years or older instead, which has stood the test of decades. The question I ask, is how those faulty building jobs ever got passed by Government building inspectors? RICHARD MERRELL, PENRITH

One win, one loss

It is good to see that Penrith Council has finally fixed the silly turning situation from Woodriff Street into Nepean Village. Cars always used to make the turn, uncertain about whether it was legal or not – given the traffic island in the centre was oddly placed. But just down the road, they’ve got it wrong. A round-a-bout at the intersection of York Road and Preston Street? Are they serious? Totally unnecessary. DON NELSON, VIA EMAIL

Push for kidney checks Take the test: Early detection is critical in the fight against kidney disease EMILY FESZCZUK

W

ith five million Australians at risk of kidney disease, Kidney Health Week 2021 (March 15-21) aims to encourage people to think about and check their kidney health. Nepean Hospital is showcasing creative artworks produced by patients of the renal and dialysis centre to spread awareness about the disease. The Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Renal and Dialysis team wants to spread a strong message of awareness to the community as there may be members who are living with early signs of the disease but are unaware. Renal Supportive Care Physician, Dr Michael Noel, said early detection lets clinicians take steps to delay the progress of kidney disease. “It’s easy to get a kidney health check and usually involves a simple blood pressure check along with urine and blood tests to help provide an indication of any disease,” he said. “Renal Supportive Care is there to support patients and their carers in their

Creative approach: Shruti Venkatesh, Jennifer Moss, Dr Michael Noel, Rose Oliphant, Anneka Finn and Kirti Barve.

battle against end stage kidney disease and the challenges that the treatment itself also brings.” People living with diabetes or hypertension are especially encouraged to get a

Kidney Health Check. Jennifer Moss is one of the people dealing with kidney disease, but has put her creative talent to use while she undergoes treatment.

Ms Moss joined an art program currently run in the renal and dialysis centre and said she produced a piece that symbolised her journey. “‘A Hand of Help’ is about someone lifting up the other person and offering a hand,” she said. “This painting makes me feel that I am being lifted up and supported by someone with more strength… I feel safe, secure and wanted.” Shruti Venkatesh, Clinical Psychologist for Renal Supportive Care, said the art program has been very popular since its launch. “There has definitely been an increase of enthusiasm among patients who participate in the program,” she said. “Creating artworks are a way to stimulate the mind and help create positive, welcoming environments for patients of our services.” Kidney Health Australia has a simple online test at www.kidney.org.au/ kidneyrisktest to assess your risk of kidney disease. If you think you are at risk or want more information, contact your GP for further advice.

Win battle of the bulge How locals can reclaim their health EMILY FESZCZUK

T

he pandemic has affected the world in many ways, including people’s waistlines and health. To help, a Kingswood dietitian has set up a free online group so that the community can learn about nutrition to improve their health. The Australia’s Health Report: When Healthcare Meets Self-Care report, which was released last month, revealed that Penrith was the top Local Government Area in NSW when it came to high rates for Body Mass Index (BMI). Tuo Tao, who practices at Kingswood Medical and Fitness Centre, said since the start of the pandemic, he has seen a need to help locals achieve better health in a practical way. “I always felt that I would see clients for a few sessions and then they would disappear until years later they would come back with issues such as diabetes, which made me sad,” he said. “Then for every 10 people I have seen directly during the pandemic, five would say that they have eaten too much due to stress or boredom, so I knew I had to do something to reach more people.” With his knowledge, Mr Tao decided to set up the ‘Eat Savvi’ Facebook page and ‘Eat

Savvi – Healthy Shopping Community’ Facebook group to promote healthy shopping and eating. “I might only see people once a week or others cannot afford to see a dietitian, so I wanted a platform that would fill the gap and give people free access to resources and evidence-based nutritional information,” Mr Tao said. “I teach people tips about what to buy and cook, I have short videos myth busting food-related questions, I suggest brands such as The Happy Snack Company and Nexba, so people can still have fun snacks but also improve their eating habits.” Mr Tao said he is making strong connections with health professionals in the area to help improve a range of health issues. “Penrith is an area that has lots of people dealing with obesity and weight-related issues like diabetes, high cholesterol, heart and gut issues, even fatty liver but even healthy people can benefit from the information,” he said. “I am working with GPs, allied health professionals and even gyms.” For more information, visit www. eatsavvi.com.au.

Business in Focus: Fitness 4 Golfers F

Who is your advisor? Graham Fitzpatrick (pictured right). How long have you been receiving business advice from the WSBC? Six weeks.

Put procrastination aside, network, connect, trust in yourself, be consistent and be generous. What are your business goals for the future? To be an authority in my region for golf fitness and injury recovery

What was the main struggle you identified within your business? Direction, solidifying my unique offer and getting my business in front of the right people

moving forward? Taking responsibility for getting the job done, following the advice given step by step, networking and just do it rather than thinking about it.

What were things you implemented that had a big impact on your business

What advice would you give to other small businesses in the same situation?

Final words... As a sole trader I struggled with the thought of having to think of and do everything myself. Finding Graham has been an absolute win for me. He has helped me put the processes in place that spell success, connected me with the appropriate people, he is realistic in his advice, he keeps me accountable in a really nice way (I was a little afraid of this at first, but now it’s a must) and the best thing is he genuinely wants the best for me and my business. Getting business advice from Western Sydney Business Centre has been one of the best things I have ever done for my business and if I keep following the advice given, my goal will be surely achieved soon!

TROY DODDS

Y

ou don’t win Grand Finals in March but you do get a pretty good idea of how your footy team has prepared over the off-season. And while Penrith were a little rusty in their 24-0 win over the Cowboys in the opening round of the season last weekend, one word that was evident out of the 80 minutes was ‘energy’. Ivan Cleary has the batteries charged on this team of youth, and they look fighting fit for the long campaign ahead. Much like what we saw from this team last year during its incredible record-breaking winning streak, the Panthers always looked in control against the Cowboys – ensuring the blood pressure of the fans back in the stands remained stable. The defence was a particular highlight, and keeping any team to zero – let alone in the first round – is something to celebrate.

KAYO FOX LEAGUE ABC 702 2GB 873

SATURDAY, MARCH 20 | 3.00PM | ANZ STADIUM | REFEREE: PETER GOUGH This weekend Cleary’s men hit the M4 for a short road trip to Bankwest Stadium where they take on a Bulldogs side that will be looking to bounce back from last week’s opening round loss to Newcastle. And after a few years of vanilla-like clashes between these two teams, there’s now some substance back into the rivalry, with Trent Barrett defecting from Penrith at the end of last season and the club luring talented youngster Matt Burton to Belmore from 2022 onwards. Tensions are rising even more now that the Dogs are desperate for Burton to be released early, a request the Panthers have continued to slam the door on. So if you can tell in March how your footy team has prepared, how did the Bulldogs look? The short answer is they looked marginally better than their second-last place

finish in season 2020, but still appear to have a long way to go before they can be considered a serious Finals contender. Their defence remains the biggest concern, especially against a team like Penrith that will continue to knock on the door whenever given the opportunity and consistently made teams pay for their mistakes last season. The points should flow in this one, but first the Panthers must win the battle of the forwards. While Jack Hetherington will likely rip and tear for the Bulldogs against his former club, and Ofahiki Ogden offers plenty of aggression, Moses Leota and James Fisher-Harris should have their measure. So too should Apisai Koroisau against another former Panther in Sione Katoa, especially given Koroisau got plenty of rest last weekend, playing just 48 minutes. And when it gets closer to the line, it’s just

PANTHERS

hard to see the Bulldogs stopping Penrith’s mouth-watering left-side attack, full of that word I noted earlier – energy. Seriously, forget drinking a Red Bull – just watch these guys go around and you’ll feel 10 years younger. Go right and Charlie Staines is waiting, it won’t be long before he gets back on the try scorer’s list. Penrith will come into this one full of confidence, but far from cocky given last week’s performance wasn’t perfect. And while the side may have one eye on next week’s Grand Final re-match against Melbourne, there’s little doubt coach Cleary will have them focused on the job at hand – something he seemed to perfect during 2020, where distraction was replaced with drive and enthusiasm. The team may not be cocky heading into this one, but I am – I honestly can’t see the Bulldogs competing. Tip: Panthers by 44.

WITH THE MASKED PANTHER

CHEERS TO THE GIRLS! because he was too busy being swamped with requests for photos and autographs. He’s quickly become a fan favourite.

!

MC Alex Cullen was forced to let guests in the Chairman’s Lounge last weekend know that the meal service would be slightly delayed. The announcement wasn’t surprising given the loud crash of plates heard coming from the kitchen a few minutes before.

!

Footy Doubles are back at Panthers Stadium this year, but COVID-19 restrictions means that volunteers from Rotary can’t wander the stands selling tickets. You can still buy your Doubles from the sellers near each gate – look out for them next Thursday night before the game against the Storm.

How good was it to see the Pantherettes back in action last Saturday night against the Cowboys? This year the squad is being choreographed by Kati Manning, who herself was a cheerleader with the Panthers and is back in town after spending some time working overseas. Check out the full story in this week’s Weekender.

!

Panthers legend Craig Gower is a step closer to being awarded the Dally M Medal he missed out on back in 2003. An investigation into whether Gower should be awarded the honour almost two decades on from the cancelled ceremony is nearly complete, with the Independent Commission to have the final say. A call could be made as soon as the next few weeks.

!

I noted last week that the Panthers would make James Fisher-Harris a priority now that the key re-signings of Stephen Crichton, Isaah Yeo and Jarome Luai have been locked away. Now there’s rumblings that not only will Fish re-sign, but the

club is set to tempt him with a whopping five-year deal. While long-term deals have come unstuck in the past, especially at Penrith, the club is confident they’ll build their forward pack around Fisher-Harris for many years to come.

!

It’s hardly the biggest deal in the world, but it’s certainly curious that Panthers ground announcer Zac Bailey is also working at Bankwest Stadium as the Eels’ ground announcer this season, alongside Katie Brown. Bailey is in his second season with the Panthers.

!

The Masked Panther hears two members of the Western Weekender news team spent too much time in the sun on Monday. Journalist Nathan Taylor and photographer Melinda Sanders both set off alarms after being temperature checked at the Panthers Academy as part of COVID-19 precautions. Thankfully both passed a second check after being given the opportunity to cool down.

!

Spotted: Panthers legend Mark Geyer filling up his Hyundai with petrol at the Budget service station on Smith Street in South Penrith.

!

Talking of big MG, he’s the latest guest on the Weekender’s Passion & Perspective podcast, which lands today. Geyer talks about growing up in Whalan, his controversial rugby league career and his achievements post-footy, including the recent opening of his own gym. You can listen to the podcast on Spotify, Apple Music and Podcast Addict – just search for Western Weekender. You can also stream or download the episode at www.westernweekender.com.au.

STAINES FOCUSED ON TEAM FIRST NATHAN TAYLOR

S

omething rather unusual happened in Charlie Staines’ third NRL game last Saturday night at Panthers Stadium… he didn’t score a try. Last season the then 19-year-old became famous for being the first player in 83 years to score six tries in his first two games of first grade rugby league. While many Panthers supporters last Saturday were disappointed not to see Staines’ unbelievable streak continue, the man himself was more pleased he got through the game unscathed in a monster Panthers win. “After coming off the hamstring injury last year, it was just good to get another game under my belt, get through the game without any issues, and be happy with how I played,” he told Extra Time. The 20-year-old from Forbes in the state’s Central West had a couple of chances to cross the line in Penrith’s 24-0 thrashing of North Queensland, but was unfortunately denied on each occasion. Asked whether he felt any pressure to score on a weekly basis, Staines said winning footy games was more important than individual success.

“I think the commentators think I’m going to score four tries every game, but I don’t feel any of that pressure, I’m just trying to play my game,” he said.

“I think one of the biggest things to come out of that Cowboys game was holding them scoreless. Defence is what we pride ourselves on and once we execute our

attack a bit better, then we’ll be even stronger moving forward.” If Staines is going to resume his try scoring spree at some stage this season, it will most likely come off the back of his new partnership with centre Paul Momirovski. In an interview with Extra Time last week, Momirovski said he was looking forward to unlocking Staines’ potential. Staines said he’s building a close bond with Momirovski both on and off the field. “I don’t think it will take long to gel with him. We showed glimpses of what we can do on Saturday and if we keep building on that, we’ll be right for the season,” he said. “Paul hasn’t been here long, but he shares a locker next to me. He’s a very crafty player and I’m excited to play alongside him this year and build that combination with him both on and away from the field.” This Saturday afternoon Penrith will aim for back to back wins to start the season when they tackle the new-look Canterbury Bulldogs at Bankwest Stadium. Staines’ said he was looking forward to going up against the club that aggressively chased his signature, before he re-signed with Penrith, late last year. “It should just be like any other game but with Baz (Trent Barrett) being at the Dogs now, I know our boys will be fired up and ready to go,” he declared.

veryone knows the first encounter after a bad-break up is fairly frosty, particularly for the one who initiated the split. Hell hath no fury like a scorned ex – and this rings particularly true in the NRL coaching world. Head coaches coming up against the club they formerly coached or assisted at have astonishingly poor records. Craig Bellamy lost to the Broncos 36-16 in his first meeting against his former club in 2003, and Ricky Stuart went down 18-10 in his first match as Raiders coach against the Eels. In fact, the only current coaches to notch a win in their first encounter against their former sides are Ivan Cleary, Des Hasler and Wayne Bennett. Even still, those three outliers have had meetings with an ex in which they’ve come off second best. Cleary was comfortably beaten by the Warriors in his first year at Penrith, Bennett lost to the Dragons by a point while in charge of the Knights, and Hasler lost to the Sea Eagles after originally moving to the Bulldogs. Shockingly, the only coaches who have yet to be outpointed by an ex are those without one or those who are yet to face them. Luckily for league fans, two coaches are set to face their exes first-up this weekend, as Trent Barrett’s Bulldogs take on the

Former Panthers assistant coach turned Bulldogs head coach Trent Barrett. Photo: NRL Images.

Panthers and Nathan Brown’s Warriors take on the Knights. Unfortunately for Barrett and Brown, I’m expecting both of them to struggle against their exes first-up. Barrett will be facing long odds to overcome the Panthers who remarkably shut out the Cowboys last week, and Brown will

need to knock off one of last year’s Finals sides in Newcastle who are looking solid again under Adam O’Brien. On top of Barrett and Brown, this week’s fixtures pit Brad Arthur against the Storm and Ricky Stuart against Parramatta – more fascinating examples of head coaches having to confront a former significant

other in this crazy world we call rugby league. While the NRL’s opening round produced countless storylines, week two’s awkward encounters should make this weekend one to remember. Listen to Joel Caine on Sydney’s sports station, SEN 1170.

ALWAYS DESTINED TO BE A PANTHER NATHAN TAYLOR

W

hen Matt Eisenhuth was informed late last season that he was no longer wanted by the Wests Tigers, the 28-year-old started to feel anxious. With the pandemic causing all sorts of dramas for unsigned players, Eisenhuth was concerned over his immediate future in the game. “It was a weird contract period with COVID… if you hadn’t signed a deal before COVID hit, it was taking a bit longer than what myself and my wife would’ve hoped,” he explained to Extra Time. “I wanted to stay at the Tigers but they told me towards the back end of the season that there wasn’t going to be a spot for me, so I had to look at other options.” After wrapping up his four seasons with Wests, Eisenhuth was contemplating his next move while watching Penrith enjoy a fairytale run in last year’s Finals Series.

Then, just when he thought all hope was lost, the phone rang. “My manager called me and said, ‘there could be a possibility of going to the Panthers, would you be interested?’. I said, ‘100 per cent’,” Eisenhuth recalled. “Watching them at the time playing Finals footy, I was feeling excited to be wanted by a club like that. A couple of weeks after the Grand Final it all worked out, I was stoked to come on board.” Last Saturday night at a packed Panthers Stadium, Eisenhuth made his long-awaited club debut with Penrith. Why is it long awaited do you ask? Well, Eisenhuth played some lower grades football with the Panthers eight years ago before joining the Wests Tigers in 2016. Eisenhuth said it was a thrill to finally play first grade for Penrith. “When I first came here as a young fella that was the goal, but it just didn’t eventuate,” he said. “But to come back and get that club debut was something pretty special. And to win on top of that was even better.”

Matt Eisenhuth had a strong debut for Penrith last week. Photo: Megan Dunn.

Eisenhuth was immense in Penrith’s 24-0 drubbing of North Queensland. Despite coming off the bench and playing 38 minutes, the 197cm lock topped his side’s tackle count with 32 and ran for impressive 129 metres, which was more than any other Cowboys player that night. “I was happy with how I played, but stats aren’t everything,” Eisenhuth said.

“For me, the best way to build relationships – other than at training and away from the field – is by playing games together, that’s when your teammates really get to know you. “Then, when you get that trust from the playing group, everything rolls off the back of that. It’s a big thing for me to work hard for my teammates.”

POSTER PARTNER We are thrilled for the season ahead as a player partner for the very first time! The culture that the club promotes and grows is something we also believe in very heavily here at East Blaxland Butchery. Lose a Grand Final to win one? Panthers fans hope so.

warren smith Y

ou’ve got to lose a Grand Final to win one, or so the saying goes. Whoever came up with that line must never have met Steve Roach. I work with Blocker most weekends and we get plenty of time to kill in commentary boxes around the country, but not once in those hours before kick-off have I ever been silly enough to offer up anything resembling the idea that losing a Grand Final enhances your chances of winning the next one. Balmain boys may not cry, but they know how to throw a very good right hand. Maybe the person who first suggested that losing a Grand Final would bring wisdom and resolve to a football team was a Penrith Panther. After Blocker’s Balmain Tigers lost backto-back deciders in 1988 and 1989, the Panthers of Royce, Brandy, MG and Freddy were next to step up and get a shot at making amends in a Grand Final just one year after they, too, lost to the Canberra Raiders. Well, we know what happened in that rematch of 1991. Roycey scored the try that gave Penrith its first title and he’s still making good on his promise to have a beer with every Panthers fan in the golden west. Perhaps it was coach Phil Gould who coined the phrase in the first place? The Panthers lose in 1990, then they win in 1991. But Gus had already won a Grand Final at the first attempt with the

Panthers co-captain Isaah Yeo before the game. Photo: Megan Dunn.

Bulldogs in 1988 – I promise I’ll never bring it up, Blocker – so the answer to that is a

definite no, no, no, no, no. Which brings us to the present-day Panthers.

Can they do what Phil Gould’s 1991 team did and use the disappointment of a lost opportunity to fire them towards a premiership in the following season? They’re only one game in, but the calm nature of the post-game comments from co-captain Isaah Yeo after the 24-nil win over the Cowboys should put Penrith fans at ease. In a game where the Panthers first half dominance wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard, Yeo knew the groundwork was being laid for a season-opening victory at home. “I thought the way we were able to camp our way down there, and as much as we weren’t scoring tries we were putting repeat sets on them. I thought they’d be pretty tired and that would help us at the backend of the game,” Yeo said. “There was no panic at half-time”. No panic. Pressure would produce points. They’re the sort of words that would be music to Ivan Cleary’s ears. He has a young and evolving team that put together a remarkable winning streak last season. His son and co-captain, Nathan, has already spoken of the missed opportunity in the Grand Final and how there will be very few days go by where he doesn’t think of the loss to the Storm. But it doesn’t need to define him or the team, just as the 1990 loss isn’t the legacy of that fabulous team three decades ago. Lose a Grand Final to win one? Doesn’t seem like such a bad trade-off.

No need to entertain early Burton departure

lang on league

with Peter Lang

I

f it were up to me, I wouldn’t release Matt Burton a year early, no wait, a day earlier than his contract stipulates. Why the hell should Penrith weaken its chances of winning a premiership, so the Bulldogs can have a better chance of making the Finals this season? The bottom line is if either Jarome Luai or Nathan Cleary go down, to have a player like Burton as a back-up is going to help the Panthers’ chances of winning enough games to make it to the big dance again. Now let’s get one thing straight, the Dogs want Burton for the same reason, so he can help them win games – nothing else. All the rest of the ‘BS’ that comes from the spin doctors in the media like, ‘oh Panthers are stagnating his development’ or ‘he’s a first grader playing reserve grade, what a waste’ is just crap designed to put pressure on Panthers HQ to release him early. I wonder how serious the Bulldogs are though. If what I’ve heard is true, their offers of a player swap have been underwhelming at best. I’m not going to name names because I don’t want to put down honest, hardworking players who are simply pawns in this little game being played. I sincerely hope the Panthers stick to their guns and keep Matt Burton in Penrith colours this season. He’s on a good wage, he’s training with a team which is going to contend for the title, and he might just

learn a thing or two. Bugger that, the Bulldogs should be paying the Panthers this year for helping him become a better player than the one they signed last year! What caught my eye last week... The absolute brutal honesty of new Cowboys coach Todd Payten. He called out his best and highest paid player and made an example of him. It certainly ruffled some

feathers and I applaud him for doing it.

Rabbitohs, Cowboys, Roosters and Raiders.

What game I’m looking forward to... I’m tipping the Cowboys to bounce back big time against the Dragons this weekend. I’m going to go out on a limb early and say, whoever loses this one, might as well start planning for 2022.

The final word... I really hate the Bunker being able to over-rule the referee’s on-field decision after he awards a try. This new rule makes a complete mockery of the referee’s decision and, in the end, you don’t know when it’s safe to get up and cheer a try your team scores. I think it should go back to the way it was.

My tips for the week... Storm, Warriors, Broncos,

Panthers,

The NRL has approved an application from the Sydney Roosters that could see Joseph Suaalii play top grade footy before his 18th birthday. NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo said the ARL Commission requested a range of assurances and independent expert advice prior to making a decision to grant the exemption. “This has been a rigorous process. Our decision is based on the independent advice of experts and information gathered from discussing Joseph’s school performance and discussions with the club and Joseph’s family,’’ he said. The Roosters are unlikely to rush Suaalii’s debut, but expect to see him in the NRL by mid-season.

Fox League is celebrating a new ratings record with last Thursday’s game between Souths and Melbourne becoming the highest rating opening round match in subscription TV history. The clash at AAMI Park had an average audience of 487,000. “This is a massive beginning for the 2021 NRL season. It continues a run of out-sized audience growth for league on subscription television in 2020 based on our growing number of sports subscribers, which is now at a high water mark in the company’s history,” said Fox Sports Executive Director Steve Crawley.

!

Talking of Fox League, it launched a brand new program on Wednesday night hosted by Matty Johns. ‘Face-to-Face’ is a new interview show featuring in-depth chats with some of the game’s biggest names. Wednesday’s episode featured ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys, with

Joseph Suaalii playing for Norths.

the guest list in future weeks including Anthony Mundine, Frank Ponissi, Danny Buderus and Karmichael Hunt.

!

Cronulla forward Toby Rudolf has been given a dressing down by the NRL, issued a warning over inappropriate comments he made in a TV interview after the win against the Dragons.

!

Ray Hadley is no longer part of the Continuous Call Team on 2GB, but he was back on air in the opening minutes of the program last Saturday. Hadley was on deck to pay tribute to radio legend John Brennan, who passed away the previous night.

ENTERTAINMENT MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PENRITH’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

MAKING THE MUSIC SHE LOVES ERIN CHRISTIE

A

year of reflection, inspired by COVID-19 restrictions, has left Dami Im with exciting things ahead as she prepares to release her latest album, teased with new songs ‘Lonely Cactus’ and ‘Paper Dragon’ “It was a challenging year, but I think one of the good things that came out of it was that it gave me some time and some space to just focus on my music,” she told the Weekender. “Rather than just rushing into it, it gave

me time to just really think about the direction I wanted to go in and what I wanted it to sound like.” 2020 marked an important time of change for Dami, who had switched record labels and was figuring out her next moves as an artist when it came to her recording. “I got signed to ABC … I have now the chance to decide and create what I want … and go in the direction that I feel really suits me,” she explained. Dami’s recording of ‘Paper Dragon’ served as a throwback to her time representing Australia at Eurovision in 2016. ‘Paper Dragon’ was among her top choices for the song she would eventually perform,

however, she instead wowed the audience with ‘Sound of Silence’. She placed second, the best result for Australia at Eurovision thus far. ‘Sound of Silence’ was a top 20 hit in Australia, and went on to chart in the top 40 in more than six countries following its Eurovision debut. The experience was somewhat freeing for Dami, who has loved pop music all her life, despite being trained as a classical pianist from a very young age. “My love for pop music started at an early age and I guess over the years … with Eurovision, you’re allowed to do whatever you’d like to do,” she said.

“You want to grab the love of as many people as possible, but also be unique and interesting … I think that’s what I found so fun and exciting with Eurovision. “I’ve always been drawn to pop songs that I used to get in trouble for … learning to sing Mariah Carey, K-Pop songs, and listening to the ‘lighter’ kind of music than Chopin and Mozart. “I like pop music … because it’s not trying to be super pretentious or really hard to understand.” Dami Im’s latest singles ‘Lonely Cactus’ and ‘Paper Dragon’ are available to stream now. She is expected to release her new album later this year.

Ê ‘Babe: Pig in the City’ actress Magda Szubanski has been announced as host of Channel Nine’s revival of game show ‘The Weakest Link’. In case you forget the original from 20 years ago, eight contestants enter a studio as total strangers and must work together to bank the maximum amount of prize money available in each round. Contestants take turns to answer general knowledge questions and build chains of correct answers. Consecutive correct answers greatly increase the value of the chain, while incorrect answers break the chain and force the contestants to start over on the lowest rung, with the smallest amount of money. At the end of each round, contestants vote to eliminate the one they consider to be the weakest link in the chain. The one who receives the highest number of votes then leaves the game as the host delivers the killer phrase, “You are the Weakest Link. Goodbye.”

At the movies... Big promises but little thrills THE LITTLE THINGS ++ 2 hours, 8 minutes ERIN CHRISTIE

‘The Little Things’ throws us back to a time some 25 years ago, hoping to revive the dark and brooding thriller that became popular with the likes of ‘Seven’ and ‘The Bone Collector’. However, this slow-going film fails to get there in the end, with the final 30 minutes only offering one disappointment after the other. Carrying the film like no one else can, Denzel Washington stars in the role of Joe Deacon, an ex-detective who left his coveted role due to the post-traumatic stress of one unsolvable case, featuring three dead women who haunt him relentlessly. When more dead women begin appearing

across Los Angeles, he is drawn back into the world he left. Washington is joined somewhat less successfully by fellow castmate Rami Malek, who came across odd and clipped in comparison to his showstopping performance as Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Jared Leto rounds out the trio, who might be the most terrifying suspect in any crime film this year. His performance is made even creepier knowing that he’s a method actor, and probably pretended to be the grotty Albert Sparma character for the entire three months of filming. Overall, this film was a slow, dark burn that fizzled instead of flamed.

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

On Monday, Saturn (in your sign) forms a fabulous trine with Mars, so passion and purpose are a fruitful combination. However, when it comes to business and finances, take your time and don’t rush. Then the Full Moon helps you communicate your innovative ideas with extra pizazz, as you connect with like-minded people via joint ventures with influential and/or international contacts. Make sure you leverage the power of social media to get your message out loud and clear.

This week, with Mercury and Neptune both transiting through Pisces, your creativity and imagination are firing. So a sudden idea could lead to exciting changes at home or within your local community. Then the weekend Full Moon brings things to a dramatic conclusion involving a close relationship, shared finances or a joint venture. Secrets and issues of loyalty could also be placed under the spotlight, as you discover whether your trust in someone has been well placed.

The late week Full Moon lights up your partnership zone, so it’s time to focus attention on a special person in your life. You could also decide to let go of a relationship that’s no longer working. Single Rams – look for love with someone who is kind and compassionate. Your motto for the moment is from Aries birthday great Reece Witherspoon: “I’ve realised that life is too short to spend my time with anybody who doesn’t appreciate me, treat me with respect or bring value to the relationship”.

Are you stuck in a rut? Have you been too stubborn to embrace change? This week’s Full Moon will shake up your daily routine and inject new energy and enthusiasm into your life. But make sure your plans are rooted in reality. At the moment you’re extra susceptible to suggestion – and flattery – so be discerning about whose advice you take. Don’t allow fair-weather friends (or fractious family members) to lead you up the primrose path to trouble. Keep your feet on the ground!

The Full Moon stimulates your friendship zones, so those around you can look forward to some surprises, amusing antics or manic moments from you and your peer group pals. But this week you need to be extra careful what you say. With Mars squaring Mercury on Wednesday, sharp words have the ability to hurt others. If you don’t slow down and self-edit, then you could end up with a messy misunderstanding on your hands. So think things through before you open your mouth!

Crabs are the carers of the zodiac. But looking after a loved one won’t be easy, as you struggle to juggle your personal and professional lives. This week’s Full Moon falls in your home zone, so be on domestic drama alert and realise that stress levels will be running high (and self-control running low). It’s a good time to refresh your living space. Be inspired by birthday great William Morris: “Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”.

The Full Moon shines a bright spotlight on all types of communication and conversation. Expect some highs and lows in relationships, but that’s normal. The harder you work on smoothing out potential problems with loved ones, the better you’ll feel. So your motto for the week is from birthday great, actress and producer Sarah Jessica Parker: “You have good days and you have bad days. That’s a marriage. That’s a friendship”. Local travel and education are also highlighted.

HOROSCOPES

Hard work will take you far but avoid the temptation to use words as weapons. The Full Moon stimulates your self-esteem and money zone. So, if you want to do well financially, then spending sprees are out and serious saving is in! It’s also an appropriate time to take a close look at your personal values and current priorities. Your motto is from Reece Witherspoon (who turns 45 on Monday): “I want to make my life, not just my job, the best it can be. The rest will work itself out”.

If you expect other people to be cooperative then you’ll be disappointed. Mars squares Mercury (on Wednesday) so choose your words wisely, otherwise you’ll just upset loved ones or work colleagues. A relationship problem is brewing so do all you can to diffuse it diplomatically, as you discuss a subject you may not necessarily feel comfortable about. The Full Moon is in your sign, so do your best to be fair and balanced, as you see things from differing view points.

With the Full Moon illuminating your seclusion and spirituality zone, it’s a wonderful week to step back and wind down as you dream, meditate, contemplate, ruminate or pray. Your intuition is trying to tell you something so take the time to listen to the wisdom of your inner voice. Be inspired by feminist writer (and birthday great) Gloria Steinem: “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning”.

This week’s Full Moon highlights romance, entertainment, networking, friendships, creative endeavours, dreams, goals and group projects. With your sparky Sagittarian mojo and momentum running on high speed, you’re ready to rock and roll! But the planets caution you to slow down. You need to take your foot out of your mouth and communicate with more care and consideration, especially in matters involving relationships (of the romantic, platonic and domestic variety).

The week kicks off with a Mars/Saturn trine, which is wonderful for boosting motivation and discipline, especially involving business and financial matters. If you roll up your sleeves and get to work, then you’ll make real progress. Sunday night’s Full Moon activates your career zone, so it’s a good time to bring a challenging professional project to a successful completion. Be careful what you say to a colleague, relative or neighbour though. Hasty words could land you in hot water!

The Type 2 Diabetes risk factors that all locals should be aware of

When is the right time to start your baby in swimming lessons?

O

T

ver 1.2 million Australians have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) which is the 8th leading cause of mortality in Australia. One of the biggest risk factors for developing T2D is being overweight or obese. Other risk factors include having a family history, being sedentary (not being physically active), having high blood pressure, having a poor diet, increased age, having prior gestational diabetes, along with some genetic factors including demographic. T2D occurs when the body resists the effects of insulin or cannot make enough insulin to maintain blood glucose levels to its target range resulting in high blood sugar levels. Glucose is the body’s main energy source and can be stored and released for energy in times long after meals. Insulin is produced by the pancreas to allow the body’s cells to uptake glucose from the bloodstream for energy. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing diabetes by up to five times compared to those of a healthy weight. Exercise and healthy eating are the front line management strategies. Muscles need energy when exercising

here are milestones in our children’s lives that can be hard, on both us and them, but we know that we are doing the right thing for our child. Issues like bottle or breastfeed, when to wean, when to start solids, when to take away the dummy, to sleep train, let them cry it out or share a bed with mum and dad. Everyone has their opinion, but there is really no clear cut right or wrong in most cases. It’s not a matter of life and death. Except in the case of when to start baby’s swimming lessons. Living in Australia means being exposed to many varying aquatic situations – pools, beaches, rivers etc. Supervision and barriers are important layers of protection that should always be in place, but the sooner your child can submerge in the water, turn around and get to the side and pull themselves out of the pool, the safer they will be. Drowning remains the number one cause of accidental death in Australian children under the age of five. Which is why the answer to “when to learn to swim” is clear cut – as soon as possible after six months of age. Babies are not born with a fear of the water, in fact they are surrounded by water during gestation. It is much easier to

and so glucose is drawn from the bloodstream for energy. After exercise your body becomes more efficient in taking up glucose to replenish your energy stores. This means blood glucose levels will decrease. Exercise can also have a positive impact on blood pressure, cholesterol, general health and wellbeing and minimises the risk of diabetic complications such as damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves of the limbs and those controlling bodily functions. If left unmanaged the need for glucose lowering medications is more prevalent. OnePointHealth runs group diabetes classes to assist in the management of blood glucose levels run by an Exercise Physiologist.

introduce them to the water and practise water familiarisation with a young baby. Sometimes, due to a range of circumstances out of our control, including COVID last year, we are not able to start our children until later, which can often be more difficult for child and parent, as the child is at a different stage developmentally and sometimes more anxious. But learning to swim is not a skill that we can ignore or delay teaching simply because the child shows resistance – it is far too important not to persevere. We generally recommend Water Babies from 6-24 months, but recognise that all children are different so work with you to find the right time to promote your child to Squids, the level where a child begins to learn to swim independently of their parents. This often coincides with the child turning two, a perfect age to begin to learn important lessons, i.e. to listen to instructions from the teacher, sit still and wait their turn. It’s not a surprise that children can become unsettled during this transition phase, so at this point in time, patience and perseverance are the all important ingredients – as is remaining happy and positive but resolute in the face of any resistance from your child.

oilet trouble in cats is a reason for real concern. Cats are usually more than happy to use their litter box inside or dig in the dirt after a meal or a drink. However, many cats fall victim to feline urinary health or lower urinary tract diseases (FLUTDs) which sees them finding it very difficult to urinate at all. While this issue may sound merely uncomfortable for your cat, difficulty urinating requires immediate veterinary attention. A blockage in the flow of urine is life threatening and ‘blocked’ cats can experience kidney damage or even die if not treated within 24 to 48 hours. There is no single cause of urinary problems in cats but common symptoms include straining or vocalising when urinating, signs of blood in the urine or urinating in unusual places like the kitchen or bathroom. Male cats, either entire or desexed, are particularly susceptible to urinary tract disorders as are overweight cats and certain breeds such as Persians. Feeding your cat a quality food low in magnesium, phosphate and calcium to decrease the chances of crystal and stone formation in their urine and

making sure your cat’s litter box is always kept clean and placed in a quiet, secure environment may help your cat. The actual cause of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) is often unknown but these cats are characterised as having idiopathic lower urinary tract disease or feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC). Stones or uroliths are the next most common condition, with struvite uroliths increasing in proportion to calcium oxalate uroliths in recent years. These conditions are the most commonly diagnosed lower urinary tract problems in cats. Your veterinarian will need to identifying and control any underlying medical disorders, including behaviour issues and dietary management. Giving an appropriately formulated food is a key element to the long-term management of the most common conditions of FLUTD in cats. FLUTD can be uncomfortable, and, if a blockage occurs, extremely dangerous. Recognising the typical signs is critical. If you suspect that your feline friend is having trouble toileting, please contact your Greencross Vets Coreen Ave on 4731 3055.

Smith calls it a day after stellar career NATHAN TAYLOR

P

Ryan Smith has played his final game for the Penrith Cricket Club.

enrith Cricket Club head coach Michael Wholohan said only one word can describe outgoing Penrith Cricket Club captain Ryan Smith: irreplaceable. Last Saturday, the veteran fast bowler played his final game of Grade cricket, retiring after a truly stellar and inspirational 15-year career with Penrith. Speaking with the Weekender, Wholohan was glowing in his summation of his newly retired skipper. “You hear a lot of clichés thrown at players, but Ryan has been a legend of Penrith Cricket Club and one of the most significant players to ever play for this club,” he said. “Ryan never played for NSW or Australia, but he was as valuable as any player we’ve had before and probably will ever have. “I don’t think we’re going to realise how hard he will be to replace until next season. He’s been so important for so many reasons for so long.” In his last game against Mosman at Howell Oval, Smith took an impressive 5/34 – proving to still be an elite player even in his twilight years. Wholohan said the Hazelbrook junior was calling it a day due to family and work commitments, but he wouldn’t rule out trying to pry him back one day.

the western weekender » Friday, March 19, 2021

SPORT

“We’ve already started to terrorise him about that, but we’ve got to go through his wife to get official permission first,” he laughed. “Ryan does fully intend to come back and play in the lower grades down the track but, in the meantime, he’ll be sorely missed by everyone.” Meanwhile, the Penrith club is licking its wounds after missing the Finals in first grade for the second consecutive season. They finished the year in 16th position, with just four wins to their name. Wholohan said there were some positives in what was a “disappointing” year. “I suppose you look at the competition table and it is disappointing because we’ve been a competitive first grade side and competitive club for so long,” he said. “Everyone’s disappointed but it is what it is and you always look for a few positives to come out of a season like this. “The emergence of Ryan Fletcher, who really stepped up to the plate and had a fantastic season as our leading wicket taker. And Tyran Liddiard scoring three centuries was another bright light for the season.” On the subject of Liddiard, Wholohan confirmed reports that the talented wicketkeeper could have also played his last game for Penrith, with the youngster keeping his options open for next season. Wholohan said he’s “super keen” of retaining the rising star.

Netball season looms Draw released: Giants keen for year ahead after disrupted 2020 campaign NATHAN TAYLOR

B

ig-time netball is returning to western Sydney again with the Giants hosting the first-ever Super Netball match at Ken Rosewall Arena (KRA) when they battle Collingwood in the second round of the upcoming season. With Super Netball releasing the full 2021 fixture last week, the Giants will begin their 2021 campaign in Adelaide against the Thunderbirds before returning home to KRA. The league distributed a full 14-round home and away fixture, with the season commencing the first weekend in May and concluding with the Grand Final on August 29. The Giants will play four home matches in the opening half of the season, hosting the Magpies, Firebirds, Lightning as well as the Swifts in Round 6 in the first-ever NSW Derby at the recently revamped Sydney Olympic Park venue. Round 8 will be a split round for the competition, with the Giants facing the Thunderbirds on Sunday, June 20 before having a bye the following week.

The Giants will play Adelaide in the Super Netball season opener this May.

All seven of the Giants’ home matches will be played at KRA this year, with the club unable to take a home game to Canberra due to AIS Arena being closed for renovations for the duration of the season. Giants head coach Julie Fitzgerald is excited to have a fixture now in place. “It’s great to have a full 14-round fixture be delivered by the league,” she said. “At one stage we thought we might only be able to fixture a few rounds, so for the league to be able to deliver a full 14-round schedule instils a lot of confidence. “We can’t wait see the competition return to some normality – playing in front of fans and finally hosting our Orange Army in the amazing Ken Rosewall Arena.” Giants Netball General Executive Manager Tim Underwood echoed Fitzgerald’s comments on the delivery of a full 14-round home and away season. “We’re really pleased with the fixture,” he said. “As a club, we’re thrilled to officially open Ken Rosewall Arena with its first netball match against the Magpies. “It’s an amazing multi-purpose precinct and we can’t wait to finally welcome our Giants family there this season.”

In the half dozen Grand Finals Penrith played in, the club won four, drew one and lost one in what was an incredible display of Panther dominance. Penrith were crowned champions in the U14 Boys, U16 Boys, U16 Girls and U18 Boys, while their U12 Boys were named joint champions after they drew with Wollongong. Penrith’s U14 Girls team suffered a 9-2 defeat to Hills in the Final to round out the weekend. Overall Penrith finished on 132 points to be named 2021 Club Champions, with Hills (118 points) and Orange (93 points) coming in second and third respectively. Long-time Penrith Touch President Glenn Fabian said he was over the moon

with the results. “It’s a tremendous achievement for the club. We were in a rebuilding phase but it’s all coming together now,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, it’s a not-for-profit sport, so none of us, including the coaches and managers, get paid – it’s all voluntary. “Along with the parents of our players, it takes a lot of effort from everyone to bring something like this together. “We’re very proud as a club to win two years in a row. We’re now looking to get bigger and better moving forward.” Penrith entered 10 teams into this year’s

Junior State Cup with eight making the quarter finals, seven qualifying for the semi-finals and six reaching Grand Final Day. Fabian said the wide range of talent at Penrith Touch is strong and their coaches are world-class. “It’s hard to say why we are so good but I’d say our excellent coaches have a lot to do with it,” he said. “We’re also a unisex sport and promote inclusiveness at Penrith; it’s 50-50 as far as girls and boys playing. We’ll definitely be going for the three-peat next year.”

SPORT ALL EYES ON PENRITH Story continued from » p.72

The event will run from October 1-6, 2025, the year the city will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In the lead up to the World Championships, Penrith will also host ICF Oceania Championships and Australian Open events, which will help the athletes and organisers prepare for the world champions competition. This will be the third time an ICF Canoe Slalom World Championship has been awarded to Australia. Penrith previously hosted the Canoe Slalom Senior World Championships in 2005 and the Junior and Under 23 World Championships in 2014. “Hosting the event in Penrith is all about the rejuvenation of an Olympic legacy while bringing together the paddling community and sharing our sport with the general public,” said Paddle Australia CEO Phil Jones. “This event will inspire a new generation of competitors, much as the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games canoe and kayak competition inspired some of the biggest names in our sport today.”

Around the grounds

CRICKET: Round 20 of the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) is in the books, with Panthers Cricket Club enjoying a mixed weekend of results. In first grade, Panthers’ final regular season game was washed out. After finishing second, Panthers will play Emu Plains in this weekend’s semi-final. In sixth grade, Panthers went down to Glenbrook Blaxland by six wickets. Panthers’ recent fragile batting continued, and they struggled to reach 77 runs. Panthers’ bowlers could not reproduce their recent Houdini efforts and Glenbrook Blaxland, with a more determined resolve, scored a convincing win. As Minor Premiers, Panthers will play Penrith RSL in their semi-final. AFLW: Greater Western Sydney recorded their first win in Melbourne in more than 1100 days, defeating St Kilda by 20 points in Round 7 of the AFLW. The

Giants adapted to the wet conditions at Moorabbin better, booting four goals to none in a match-winning first quarter to run out 45-25 winners last weekend. This Saturday afternoon the Giants will return to Victoria to face Geelong in the penultimate round. W-LEAGUE: Bryleeh Henry scored her first W-League goals and Rosie Galea hit a brace as the Western Sydney Wanderers clinched their first ever win in Victoria with a 4-0 win over Melbourne City in Round 12 of the W-League. A-LEAGUE: Western Sydney scored an incredible 4-3 win over Wellington on Tuesday night at Bankwest Stadium. GOLF: Dunheved Golf Club and

Wallacia Country Club have both won promotion to a higher division in Major Pennants for 2022, following impressive semi-final victories last Sunday. Dunheved defeated Asquith 5-2 at Stonecutters Ridge. Muirfield won the other semi-final against Kogarah +5.5-1.5 and will now face Dunheved on Monday at Terrey Hills to decide the Division Title. Wallacia defeated Rosnay 5-2, also at Stonecutters Ridge. Kareela defeated Macarthur Grange GC 5-2 in the other semi-final and will now face Wallacia at Terrey Hills Country this Monday to decide the Division Title. In the Ladies Major Pennants, Penrith fell 4-1 to Moore Park on the Bungool course at Riverside Oaks last Sunday and will remain in Division 2 in 2022. The Relegation match for Glenmore Heritage Valley was postponed.

CRICKET: Penrith have ended the year with a rare draw against Mosman in Round 15 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a One-Day match at Howell Oval, Mosman won the toss and sent Penrith into bat first. Penrith were strong with the bat, notching up 5/207 after 50 overs. Ryan Hackney top scored with an impressive 88. When Mosman hit the crease, they came agonisingly close to victory but were dismissed on 207 – resulting in the rarest of ties. Skipper Ryan Smith, in his final game before retirement, was best with the ball taking 5/34. Penrith ended the year in 16th place, with four wins, two draws and eight losses to their name.

5 years after it hosted canoe slalom at the Sydney Olympics, Penrith Whitewater Stadium will once again welcome the world’s best paddlers and host the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. Last weekend the International Canoe Federation (ICF) announced Penrith as the host city of the 2025 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships following a successful bid presented by Paddle Australia with the support of the Australian Government, NSW Government and Penrith City Council. ICF President Jose Perurena said returning to an Olympic venue was important. “Returning to Sydney underlines how our Olympic venues can provide a wonderful legacy for a host city,” he said. “Nearly all of our canoe slalom Olympic venues continue to host international events. Next year we will celebrate 50 years since slalom made its Olympic debut in Munich, by returning to Augsburg for the World Championships. “Penrith will also be an important host, ahead of the possibility of Brisbane hosting the 2032 Olympic Games.” Story continues on » p. 71

Life starts at Thornton Park Michael and Kerrie’s family home of 42 years became too much to maintain. They have more room now than they could have imagined. “It was a Monday when we first walked into Thornton Park and fell in love with it. By the Tuesday, we’d decided to buy. The kitchen is double the size of our old one, and we have more space here than we did in our house. The apartments are beautifully configured, and it’s so easy to get around. Our kids are very excited for us. The pressure’s been taken off them now we’re settled for the long term and it’s good knowing there’s home care and a nursing home next door should anything ever change. It’s everything we could have hoped for and more.”

“We upsized our life.” – Michael & Kerrie, Residents
