THE HEARTBEAT OF PENRITH

HEALTH WORRY Over 50 per cent of Australia’s young adults do not have private health cover and are playing Russian roulette with their health. 52.8 per cent of young adults aged between 18 and 24 don’t have private health insurance and of those aged 25 to 34, 48.6 per cent are living without it. And it seems that the cost of such cover is what is holding local people back from taking the leap.

enrith is on the brink of a performing arts revolution with local productions winning big awards and Penrith-based theatre companies taking on risky projects of huge proportion. It’s a far cry from a few decades ago when Penrith’s arts scene was almost dormant apart from the loyal few who attended the old Q The atre on Station Street. Now, Penrith is leading the way with cutting edge productions that are being recognised nationally.

‘Truck Stop’, which played at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in 2012 to much critical acclaim and was a Q The atre Company production, last weekend won a prestigious AWGIE Award, presented by the Australian Writers Guild, for playwright Lachan Philpott. It won the ‘Theatre: For Young Audiences’ gong at an awards ceremony hosted by writer, comedian and songbird Sammy J at the Plaza Ballroom in Melbourne. The latest recognition follows enormous success at the prestigious Sydney Theatre Awards earlier this year. Meanwhile, ‘Kids Killing Kids’, which opens

next week at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, was awarded Best New Experimental Work at the Melbourne Fringe Awards on Saturday night at the Fringe Club, North Melbourne Town Hall. ‘Kids Killing Kids’ is a joint Q Theatre Company and MKA Theatre of New Writing production. Grant Jones, who is the President of the Penrith Musical Comedy Company, believes that the local area is becoming more adaptive to riskier, more inventive theatre productions, like the musical ‘Avenue Q’, which his company is presenting later this month. Short-term closure the “price of progress” as $4 million overhaul is confirmed Penrith Courthouse will un dergo a major facelift to make it a state-of-the-art facility, but there’s a c atch: a si x month closure of the facility

enrith Courthouse will be closed for six months to allow for a multimillion dollar facelift. The closure means that those who usually would have attended court in Penrith will have to travel to facilities in Parramatta and Campbelltown for the fir st half of next year. With construction expected to begin in late December to early January, Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres confi rmed the go-ahead for the refurbishment on Wednesday, which is the most signific ant renovation the courthouse will have seen since it was fi rst opened in 1963. Mr Ayres said that the $4 million investment into significant heavy construction, to both the interior and exterior of the building, will improve the court facilities in general whilst improving disability access and will allow for a new registry office for smoother operation of the court services. “It is going to be a significant change, something I know the local legal fraternity has been crying out for for a period of time,” Mr Ayres said. Penrith-based lawyer and Chamber of Commerce Vice President, Joe Grassi is keen to see the works get underway, convinced that the end result will be worth the wait. “Th is is a good facility but it has been used extensively,” he said. “It’s really a heavily used court so consequently the facilities have in fact depleted over a period of time, the security

systems here aren’t what they should be and we’ve got now the opportunity of having something which is going to be state of the art.” The six month closure of the courthouse is considered the best option to ensure that the desired result is achieved. According to Mr Ayres, closing the court is the “price of progress”. “We have to close this facility to get it back up to scratch,” he said.

“We are spending multiple millions of dollars so we are not going to try to do two things at the same time; run the court and renovate it. I think that would just be a disastrous result for both the judiciary, the jury as well as the users of the court.” Mr Grassi said he hoped the works would be completed in the scheduled time frame. “Practitioners are going to be inconvenienced but I think that the end

result is going to be worth it,” he said. “I certainly hope that the renovations can be done in that time frame. Extending the time frame would be a problem.” Mr Ayres said that the Government’s good record means that it can be trusted to get the job done on time. “The long-term dividend is significantly in the favour of the city,” he said. NRL: Penrith Panthers What’s in a name? The big issue over at the Panthers at the moment seems to be about the change of logo for the 2014 season and dropping the word ‘Penrith’ from that branding. I understand the reasons behind the move, but as a fan and advocate for Penrith, I doubt I’ll ever agree with the logo not carrying the name of the city that the team represents. In the world of big brands and buzz words, I understand how easy it is to be convinced that the bigger picture is amazingly bright, but as the old saying goes, you should never forget where you come from. The Panthers mean something to this city; the two premierships – particularly in 1991 – are deeply entrenched in the history of Penrith, not just the history of Panthers. Councillor and former Mayor John Thain said to me this week that dropping ‘Penrith’ was a “denial of who they are and where they come from. It’s hard to disagree with him. Th is is a proud, growing regional city, and one that the Panthers should be proud to have emblazoned across their logo and jersey. Many say it doesn’t matter and maybe in the big scheme of things, it won’t. But as someone who’s attended Penrith games since I was a kid, I personally am disappointed to see the city’s name gone from the logo for the fi rst time since 1967. The logo image itself? It’s slowly growing on me, particularly when it’s on a black background. On the field, where footy matters most, the Panthers appear to be on track, with victory in the Holden Cup Grand Final last weekend helping prove this. Players like Bryce Cartwright and George Jennings will emerge as future household names of this club, and recruitment for the 2014 season has been second to none in the NRL. Penrith is a top eight side in 2014.

A-League: WS Wanderers The A-League season kicks off this weekend and there’s no doubt that all eyes will be on the Wanderers. Don’t let the success of the club fool you in terms of the A-League itself – it’s still got a long, long way to go before it is a stable force in Australian sport, but the amazing debut season from Western Sydney last year is certainly a huge help. Nobody can deny how amazing the fan base is, and those at the Wanderers club are quietly confident they’ll stick around even if results start to fall away. Without doubt, the Wanderers are on the cusp of cementing a long, successful future in western Sydney.

AFL: GWS Giants The Greater Western Sydney Giants are a joke, and I mean that. And it’s not just about their poor performances on the field, but their complete lack of connection with the area they apparently represent. Th is was highlighted most last week, when the Giants secured the services of Shane Mumford for next season. Last Thursday, they held a press conference and photo opportunity with the Swans ruckman. Where did they hold it, I hear you ask? Blacktown? Parramatta? Penrith? Nope, don’t be silly, that’d be too smart. The press conference was held in Glebe, with photos taken in front of the ANZAC Bridge. Welcome to the west, Shane! Th is was only rivalled for stupidity back in June when the Giants held a media event on the steps of the Sydney Opera House to promote their match against Port Adelaide. Actually, I tell a lie. They also held a media opportunity in Coogee back in June as well. Coogee – pathway to the west. At that Opera House event, their “number one ticket holder Melissa Doyle was proudly in attendance. She, by the way, went to Pymble Ladies College. Pride of the west. To be honest, the Giants’ strategy totally confuses me. It’s not being helped by their performances on the field, but unless they actually start to respect and penetrate their target market, they’ll go out the back door very, very quickly.

eputy Mayor Jim Aitken says Penrith Council needs to have a good look at Emu Plains to solve the traffic issues marring local residents and businesses. He says with fi nancial commitments from both the State and Federal Governments to major infrastructure projects affecting Emu Plains and the west of the Penrith CBD, a broader approach to the area needs to be taken. “We have money for the walkway next to Victoria Bridge and we have money promised for the Jane Street extension. In doing these projects we are missing a great opportunity to fi x the traffic congestion along the Bridge and Great Western Highway, he said. “I know it is opening a can of worms, but I wouldn’t be representing my constituents if I didn’t at least start a discussion. I have had seven emails about the issue and I think there are some valid points raised. “If you say that 300 people use the bridge to bridge walk per day, you would probably be right, so can we justify spending [in excess of $20 million] on a walkway when there are traffic concerns with the bridge that are far greater? The masterplan for the Nepean River Precinct is edging closer to completion, and Cr Aitken believes that if the river is to be utilised as suggested in the masterplan, that access to the river, on both sides, is pivotal.

“Then there is the issue that the State Government is saying it supports jobs, yet takes away the car parking for residents to visit the local Emu Plains shops. We just recently lost the cheesecake shop, he said. “There is nowhere for people to park their cars and visit the stores so they are

closing. We need a coordinated approach to looking at these issues affecting Emu Plains because it is an historic and important part of Penrith. Cr Aitken said that if local residents have ideas about the Jane Street extension or Nepean River Green Bridge, that they can email him at Jim@JimAitken.com.au.

“‘Avenue Q’ is a huge thing for a company like ours to take on – it’s a hugely technical project,” Mr Jones said. “But it allows us to bring a quality, world renowned production to Penrith and shows how much Penrith is growing in its arts culture and stature.” Winner of the Tony “triple crown” for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, ‘Avenue Q’ is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment

all the way out on Avenue Q. And the stars of the show? Amazingly crafted puppets! Q Theatre Company Producer, Katrina Douglas said she was proud that Q productions were being recognised. “The awards for ‘Kids Killing Kids’ and ‘Truck Stop’ acknowledge the Q’s commitment to developing and producing important new Australian writing,” she said. “It’s very exciting that ‘Kids Killing Kids’ is coming to the Joan hot on the heels of its award-winning premiere season at the Melbourne Fringe.”

Youngsters take the risk and avoid taking out private health cover, figures show

O

KATHERINE TWEED

ver 50 per cent of Australia’s young adults do not have private health cover, hoping they won’t need an unexpected trip to the hospital or dentist. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducted a health survey and released results this year fi nding that in 2011-2012, 52.8 per cent of young adults aged between 18 and 24 don’t have private health insurance and of those aged 25 to 34, 48.6 per cent are living without it. According to the ABS, the cost of health insurance is what is holding most back. Maddison Evans, 22, is studying at university and is therefore covered by her parents’ private health insurance but is unsure whether she would be prepared to organise her own cover. “I would defi nitely think about it. I use the extras a lot such as dental, chiro and physio so I think I would need it. The only thing stopping me would be price... insurance is one of those things, when you’re strapped for cash people don’t really think of it as a priority,” she said. James Sequen, a 21-year-old from Emu Plains has never benefited from having private health insurance. “As you grow, maybe health insurance will become more applicable to you but I think the younger generation has an attitude where they don’t like to pay for something if they won’t get anything out of it,” he said. “I think that is stopping a lot of younger

adults getting private insurance.” Private health insurance provider, Bupa says that private health insurance doesn’t have to be expensive. “It’s really important to understand that from a tax perspective, it can actually be cheaper to have private health insurance that not,” said Matt Allison, Bupa Media and Corporate Communications Manager. “It’s essential that people have the right knowledge so they can make informed decisions about their most valuable asset – their health.” Without private heath insurance, young people may have to pay more than those with cover for services including general dental, preventive dental, optical, physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, pharmacy, accident cover and complementary therapies. According to Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chief Executive, Kay Hyman, private health insurance also has benefits within the hospital system. “When a patient is admitted to a public hospital, patients with private health insurance can elect to be treated as a private patient,” she said. “Some of the benefits of electing to be treated as a private patient in a public hospital include the opportunity to be treated by the doctor(s) of your choice (provided that doctor has admitting rights within the hospital), and access to a single room if one is available.” If you’re single and earn more than $84,000 a year, or you are a couple or family that earns over $168,000 (on a family membership this increases by

$1,500 per child after the fi rst child), you have to pay an additional Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) of between 1 to 1.5 per cent if you don’t have private cover.

Th is means a single person earning $85,000 without private health insurance could pay an extra $850 in tax each year, according to Bupa.

MAYOR’S NEWS ROSS FOWLER

Launch of Charles Perkins Centre A major medical research facility was launched at Nepean Hospital this week. The Charles Perkins Centre Nepean will bring academics and practitioners from our local area health district together to find solutions to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The centre is linked to the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre. Our community’s high participation rates in clinical trials and the establishment of the Penrith Health and Education precinct both played a part in the university’s decision to put the centre here. The centre will expand and build on the work of Sydney Medical School Nepean, which is based at the hospital. The centre’s research and education programs will directly involve and benefit our local community. The establishment of the centre augurs well for high quality jobs within the City. We look forward to further collaboration, taking the next steps together as part of the Penrith Health Education Precinct.

Decade-long wait Social housing pressure felt strongly in Penrith

T

CASSANDRA O CONNOR

he number of applicants waiting for social housing in Penrith has decreased, but there is still a wait of over 10 years for properties with two or three bedrooms. The latest statistics from the Department of Family and Community Services show that 1,811 applicants are waiting for one of the 3,439 social housing properties in Penrith. Minister for Family and Community Services, Pru Goward said that accessible information on public housing waitlists was influencing people’s decisions about applying for accommodation. “Since we published this information, the number of applicants who have changed their preferred area has tripled from 1,000 to 3,000 (June 2012-13). Thi s shows that applicants are using the information to make more informed choices about what is best for them and their families, she said. However, the 10-year wait for two and three bedroom properties has not deterred people from wanting to live in Penrith. “There has been a reduction in the number of applicants on the waiting list in Penrith over the past 12 months, dropping from 1,883 (as at June 30, 2012) to 1,811 (as at June 30, 2013), a Department spokesperson confir med. “At the same time, the waiting time for two and three-bedroom properties has increased in Penrith and waiting times

for these dwellings are currently longer than in surrounding areas, such as Richmond or Windsor. The last general waitlist applicant for a two-bedroom place in Penrith was housed in May 2013 and three-bedroom place in June. In the 12 months to June 30

of this year, 31 general social housing applicants were housed in Penrith and 145 priority applicants. “There is still more to do to reform the broken social housing system left to us by the previous Labor Government, Minister Goward said.

Electrical recall A mandatory recall has been announced for all Infi nity branded TPS and “orange round” electrical cable. The insulated electrical cables are commonly used for household electrical wiring as well as industrial and commercial work. The recall and prohibition notices follows a public warning Fair Trading issued on September 27 2013, when the agency became aware the company had been placed in liquidation, advising consumers and electricians not to purchase or install Infi nity cables. “While there is no immediate safety threat, testing of the cables has shown that deterioration of the insulation over time can cause wires to become exposed and potentially result in an electrical shock or fi re,” said NSW Fair Trading Commissioner, Rod Stowe.

f there was any doubt that the people of Penrith love their animals, there isn’t any more. Penrith Council has the third highest number of companion animals registered in the state compared to all other Council areas. The Division of Local Government has released a data series comparing each and every Council in NSW. Blacktown came in at number one, with over 75,000 pets followed by Lake Macquarie with over 72,000. There are a total of 65,979 registered pets in Penrith. The report also examined access to the Internet. Penrith, in the metropolitan fringe grouping, fares well, with 76 per cent of residents having access to the Internet from their home. But in the Blue Mountains, 78.4 per cent of residents have access to Internet from home, whereas in the City of Sydney, 74.3 per cent of residents have Internet access. Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said that if Internet access on mobile devices was included that Penrith’s statistics would probably be even greater. “We do have a younger population, which is more technologically savvy as well as key institutions such as the university and teaching hospital that may impact our rate of Internet access,” Cr Fowler said. Local community groups are also well off in Penrith compared to other regions,

Time no obstacle Police are encouraging victims of sexual assault to come forward, no matter how long ago the incidents occurred, following the arrest of a man for alleged offences which occurred between five and seven years ago. Late last year, police were contacted by a teenager who wanted to report a number of alleged assaults against her when she was younger. The assaults allegedly happened between January 2006 and December 2008, when she was aged between eight and 10. Penrith police investigated the claims and detectives this week arrested a 49-year-old man who is now facing multiple charges.

and there are sporting, cultural and volunteer groups who utilise public halls. They are all needed and all used,” Cr Fowler said. Penrith Council spends $176 per person on roads, bridges and footpaths, compared to other metropolitan fringe councils who on average spend $118.

olice officers often aren’t given the recognition they deserve in the community, but the search is now on to fi nd St Marys Local Area Command’s top cop. The St Marys Police Officer of the Year awards, run by Rotary, is designed as a formal opportunity for the community to acknowledge the efforts of local police in the community. “These awards continue to provide us with a high point in our calendar and an opportunity for members of the community to formally recognise members of the local police,” said Acting Superintendent, Mick Connolly.

“It is a difficult job and a lot of times we can go unnoticed and we can feel like it is a bit of a grind but these days in particular are a highlight every year.” The awards for 2013 were launched on Tuesday, with nominations now open. There are two major awards handed out to offic ers; a Peer Award, where nominations are accepted from within the station, and a Community Award where the public nominate officers who have made an impact on their lives. ith summer threatening to reach record breaking temperatures across western Sydney, the backyard pool is going to look very tempting. However, according to a new study, two-thirds of Australian pool owners wouldn’t know how to resuscitate their own family member in an emergency. Findings from the PoolWerx Pool Safety Survey show that a further 43 per cent of pool owners don’t have an up-to-date CPR chart displayed in their pool area and 20 per cent of people admitted to having never inspected the safety of their pool area. PoolWerx Glenmore Park owner Anthony Fil said his store is committed to promoting water safety awareness. “Despite boasting the highest pool ownership per capita in the world, Australians still ignore basic safety measures including regular inspection for pool dangers, displaying an up-to-date CPR chart and understanding basic life saving techniques,” he said. “With summer tipped to be an absolute scorcher, now is the perfect time to check the fence and gate latch are in working order, the pool water is healthy and your surrounding pool area is safe.” Former Australian swimming coach and water safety ambassador Laurie Lawrence is again reinforcing his ‘Kids Alive – Do the Five’ swim safety message. Safety a priority

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Despite the current issues surrounding the executive of the National Broadband Network, a development application has been submitted on behalf of Telstra to build a pre-fabricated sandwich panel building for the housing of NBN equipment at an address in Mulgoa. Telstra currently owns the land at 25 The Straight Road, Mulgoa and has an existing shed for Telstra equipment and infrastructure. The new shed would cost $200,000 to build. The Thorndale Foundation has been given the green light to knock down and rebuild their facilities at 47-49 Rance Road, Werrington. The Foundation is currently located in rented premises in St Marys because their old facility was an occupational health and safety concern. The new facility will house day programs to help people with disabilities develop employment and life skills. Residents can now have their say on the development of a new sporting precinct in Glenmore Park. As part of the Bradley Ridge Precinct Plan, a cricket field, two football fields, two playgrounds and a number of parking spaces as well as possible bike path have been planned for. One of the fields would accommodate AFL and athletics, including long jump and discus facilities, whilst the other field would be for football and cricket. There would also be a major and a minor playground for children of all ages. The facilities are worth $1.85 million.

new Community Safety Plan will be implemented over the next three years to address key crime trends and perceptions of safety in the local area. Penrith Council’s Community Safety Team, in conjunction with local police and the Penrith Community Safety Partnership, which includes resident action groups, University of Western Sydney and the Local Health District, designed the plan based on local crime data and community consultation. According to a report presented to Councillors, general concerns for safety in public space locations were identified as an issue through community consultation sessions and survey responses. Alcohol-related antisocial behaviour and threatening behaviour in public spaces were highlighted as a particular concern. “It is concerning that sexual assault, harassment and threatening behaviour and public nuisance have increased, but the plan, along with the Federal Government’s commitment to install CCTV cameras in the St Marys and Penrith CBDs will improve safety perceptions of Penrith,” Cr Mark Davies said. Strategies have been developed to address the three priority areas being public space offences, malicious damage and domestic and family violence. One of the strategies being implemented is the renewal of the ‘Walk Wise’ project to activate shared pathways and promote user safety particularly at night. Litter management is another key tool to improving public perceptions of safety as is the provision of alcohol free spaces. Penrith Council is also going to review the Public

enrith City Council staff will have their work cut out for them next month when the Swimming Pool Barrier Inspection Program comes into effect. In line with new State Government legislation, Council has been required to develop a safety inspection program before October 29. Residents also have until October 29 to register their pool on a statewide register. From April 2014, all properties sold or leased will need to have a certificate of compliance for their swimming pool, and it will be mandatory for tourist accommodation and multi-occupancy dwellings with pools to be inspected every three years. Council is anticipating that despite competition from private certifiers, it will have “a significant portion” of market demand, but will only have a small team working on the swimming pool program. “Th ree staff will be involved in the inspection program, including one who is administrative,” a Council spokesperson confir med. “Council has developed a three-phase inspection program where the initial focus will be on the requirement of sale, lease, tourist/visitor accommodation and multi-occupancy dwellings which will be followed by inspections of private pools.” The Weekender understands that funding for the second pool inspector will not be available until the beginning of

2014 and that there are in excess of 20,000 swimming pools in the Penrith local government area. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, an estimated 361,100 or 14 per cent of households in NSW have either a swimming pool and/or a spa. A higher proportion of households in Sydney have either a pool or spa compared with the balance of NSW.

However, with just two weeks left for pool owners to register their pools, a spokesperson for Local Government Minister, Don Page, confi rmed less than a third of the state’s pools have been registered. “The statewide online Swimming Pool Register has been in operation since April 29, 2013 with over 100,000 registrations to date,” the spokesperson said.

“Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide a breakdown of registrations for western Sydney or the Penrith Local Government Area at this stage.” Council will be able to issue a $220 Penalty Notice to property owners who fail to register their pool, however, it will take significant Council resources to identify pools in the region that have not been registered.

Almost 300 charities and not-for-profit groups registered in the Penrith LGA

W

CASSANDRA O CONNOR

hen it comes to supporting a worthy cause, the residents of Penrith have plenty to choose from. According to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), there are 281 registered organisations in the Penrith LGA, ranging from religious and medical research organisations, to cultural and environmental groups and every cause in between. In the Penrith CBD there are 73 registered organisations, with another 51 in St Marys. Most other suburbs in the region have local not-for-profit organisations, whether it be the local church, Parents and Citizens school group or Rural Fire Service. In fact, such is the diversity of charity organisations, that the Federal Government earlier this year created a new Charities Act 2013. “Our charities have evolved to meet the changing needs of our ever-diversifying communities,” said Acting ACNC Commissioner Murray Baird. “The Act modernises the law by clearly recognising charitable purposes such as the protection of human rights, the promotion of reconciliation and tolerance, and by recognising that modern charities advance causes by preventing, educating, researching and raising awareness.” New figures have resoundingly confi rmed that small charities are the life-blood of the nation’s not-for-profit

sector, as evidenced by the numerous small charities in Penrith. Data analysed by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission about the fi rst 1,000 charities that have registered since it was established in December last year showed almost 80 per cent have annual revenue of less than $250,000 and just three board members. One of the lesser known charities helping local residents is the Violet Foundation, supporting people who have been affected by the deadly meningococcal disease. In October 1994, Leanne Weymark Cotter realised her 14-month-old daughter, Danielle was very sick. She took her to the local doctor but Danielle’s condition was deteriorating rapidly and she ended up being transported to Camperdown Children’s Hospital. Danielle had contracted meningococcal, a disease that has changed her life – her left arm was amputated through her elbow and after that she had her four fi ngers, palm and half of her thumb off her right hand amputated. “I remember one of my major operations, to have my big toe attached to my hand so that I could have a way of gripping things,” Danielle recalled. But the Violet Foundation has also changed Danielle’s life. “When I was eight I started riding at Riding for the Disabled Association. I was a little bored with being led around on a horse so I started to learn and compete,”

she said. Danielle is now looking to qualify in equestrian at the 2016 Paralympic Games to be held in Rio. The Violet Foundation bought Danielle her fi rst horse, Mikey.

“Donations and sponsorship for charities is really important... I am very grateful to be able to pursue my goal of going to the Paralympics,” she said. “The generosity of people goes a long way.”

enrith Paceway is giving back to the community after recently being able to provide Regentville’s Rural Fire Service with a cheque to cover the purchase of three iPads, fitted with relevant information to make their job easier. “I don’t think you can really measure how helpful it’s going to be,” said Captain Glen McCartney. “All of our mapping, the information about other fi res that are around us,

hazardous material identification, it’s all here,” he added. Applications on the iPads show water hydrant locations, emergency locations, grid and hazardous material references and have the ability to send real-time information back to the fi re control centre. “Time is of the essence. Time can be saving a life. It’s hard out there with all the fi res,” said Penrith Paceway CEO, Lorraine Pozza. “Anything that we can do to help them and the community, especially the Rural Fire Service, we’re here for them.”

Family Room provides comfort Initiative at Nepean Hospital allows parents to take a break in tough times huge addition to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) funding pool will see the Ronald McDonald Nepean Family Room continue to support local families struggling through the hardest of times. Part of the $700,000 raised at this year’s RMHC Ball will be used to maintain the local Family Room, which acts as a refuge for families with a sick infant being cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Nepean Hospital. Since its inception in May this year, the room has been a comfort to over 300 families who have used the facility for anything as small as a space to catch a breather and drink a coffee to somewhere they can spend a night when options run out. “What was there before and what is there now is chalk and cheese. The room has a whole lot of warmth in it, a lot of love has gone into creating it,” said Deana Gibbons, Nepean Family Room Coordinator. “The room means that the family has somewhere to go for respite away from the medical, clinical side of the hospital. It is a home away from home.” One of those to benefit from the Family Room is Nicole Smith who sought refuge in the room during the period her daughter, Amy, spent 98 days in the NICU. “I can’t say enough good things [about Nepean Hospital], they saved my little

girl’s life and having the room there was, I guess, an unexpected solace when we were going through some ups and downs,” Ms Smith said. “It is a very similar story with all those who have access to the room. It gives you a chance to step away from the hospital world, whilst still being in the hospital.”

Funding helps the Family Room volunteers, along with Ms Gibbons to purchase the every day items that families who use the room may need. Th is includes things like food and drinks, utensils, bed linen and other supplies as well as little things that may provide comfort like DVDs, petrol

vouchers, movie tickets and even toys for the siblings who can’t see their brother or sister because they are too sick. Donations are constantly needed, and are being called for. To donate non-persishable food items or to volunteer, contact Ms Gibbons via email: deanag@rmhwestmead.org.au.

ocal theatre company Ruby Productions will give young talent a chance to shine in their new show ‘Lost Socks, Love and Lollipops’. The show is an original production that was written by Craig Parris and directed by Jenny Vanderlem and will be premiering on Saturday, October 12 at the John Lees Centre on Evan Street in Penrith. In a production that promises to be fun for all the family, ‘Lost Socks, Love and Lollipops’ is set in a mythical world with two neighbouring royal families, who are facing very normal dilemmas despite all their riches and power. One kingdom is ruled by King Caractacus, who is going solo as a single father trying to come to terms with the

fact that his little girl Princess Carina is growing up fast and changing. There’s also the problem of his new neighbour who he has a crush on – Queen Saffi ra who is also raising her only son Prince Eric, alone. The stage is set for drama, comedy and tension as King Caractacus tries to win the affection of Queen Saffir a while Prince Eric quickly falls for Princess Carina, resulting in a heart-warmingly funny attempt by both men to woo the ladies. As a backdrop to the romantic drama, a more serious issue arises in the kingdoms as socks and tights bizarrely go missing. ‘Lost Socks, Love and Lollipops’ will be showing at the John Lees Centre in Evan Street, Penrith from Saturday, October 12 to Friday, October 25. Tickets are $20-$25. For more information, visit www.rubyproductions.com.au.

hether you prefer the challenge of a 23km run or a more relaxing day of face painting and a barbecue, the Steps of Hope Community Fun Day has something for everyone. Taking place on Saturday, October 26 will be a walk-a-thon at Nepean River from 7am, followed by a Community Fun Day from 9am held at Regatta Park, Emu Plains. Presented by West Care Community Services, Steps of Hope is an annual fundraiser that aims to make a difference in the community. All funds raised will go towards continuing the work of West Care Community Services, who reach out and support disadvantaged families by providing food, clothing and toiletries. The Community Fun Day, which celebrates all the walkers and runners who cross the fi nish line, will have entertainment for the whole family, including an animal petting farm, super slide, jumping castle, face painting, footy clinics and more. Each year, over a million people from 21 countries across the globe commit to growing a moustache – or if you are a woman, supporting men growing moustaches – for the 30 days of November to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. Th is year, the creative theme ‘Generation Moustache’, affectionately known as ‘Gen Mo’, has been again designed by Urchin Associates, the company responsible for developing the creative theme each year. “The Movember movement stands for change and the idea behind Generation Moustache is to capture the spirit and commitment the Movember community has to changing the face of men’s health,” said Movember co-founder and Urchin Associates founding partner, Travis Garone. “Th is year, we are asking people to crank up the volume, make some noise and fly the flag for men’s health by fig hting the good fight. I like to think of Gen Mo as positive revolutionaries.” Since it began in 2003, with only 30 men, the initiative has raised over $440 million for men’s health. For more information, visit www.movember.com.

This year, Movember is operating under the creative theme of ‘Generation Moustache’.

T

he recent declaration of support by our Mayor for the Penrith Progression, a process introduced by the PBA for the revitalisation of the Penrith CBD, has been greatly welcomed by the PBA. In a statement to the Western Weekender last week, Cr Ross Fowler said that through Penrith Progression there are opportunities for Council to look at property investment as an alternative income stream. He believes that Penrith Progression is a catalyst to create long term growth in the Penrith CBD. According to Cr Fowler Council would be looking to take away some of the reliance on rates and grants and create a property portfolio that works for the community. However, this is a long term goal, it is not something that can be achieved in a year, but rather over a decade. The Chairman of the Penrith Business Alliance, Paul Brennan has thanked Cr Fowler for this strong support for this important PBA initiative. PBA recognises that Council’s role is very crucial in achieving the outcomes of the Penrith Progression given the extent of its landholdings and the enormous leverage this presents in activating development activity in partnership with the private sector. However PBA is equally conscious of the stake other land owners have in the CBD. PBA will ensure that the Penrith Progression is very inclusive in approach so that the market feels confident in making the best calls irrespective of land ownership.

ctually this heading is probably a bit misleading: if you’ve been in business for more than two years, you will know that none of the tips in this article are ‘secrets’ or even new ideas. However, if you are anything like me, they are things that fall by the wayside far too easily. The following tips relate to your productiveness and how best to ‘get things done’: 1. Have confidence. Too many women in business let lack of confidence affect their business, either in the form of telling yourself you are not good enough or saying yes to things that you’d rather not do. You are a better business owner than you give yourself credit for. 2. Check the company you keep. Surround yourself with productive and successful people and remove yourself from negativity or naysayers. You need inspiration and help from people who will cheer you on and celebrate your successes. 3. Focus, focus, focus. Everyone has a long to-do list. But it’s the people who know how to chunk it into manageable pieces who are productive. Set a timer for 10-20min and focus solely on getting a job, or part of a job, completed. Then move on to the next. Multi-tasking is most often not as productive as it might appear. 4. Work smarter. Are there jobs you can outsource? Are there better ways to structure your time spent with clients? Are there ways you can adapt previous work instead of reinventing the wheel each time? ome say our net worth is determined by what remains after our bad habits are subtracted from our good ones and that is a fair assumption. Bad habits make or break your business. I have done some research and combined it along with my own opinion and experience from dealing with clients to make a list of bad habits which could have a negative effect on your business: Poor handshake: It’s unprofessional giving a soft handshake. It’s not a good way to start your fir st impression. Not RSVPing: Not making the effort to say you can or cannot attend an event is enough for some people to write you off completely. Even worse is saying you are coming and then not showing up. Bad Punctuality: I was guilty of this until I made it this year’s resolution to be on time for meetings. Don’t make being late a habit. Phubbing: Playing with your phone too much at work or during networking events is a no-no. It’s either saying you don’t care or shows you are too easily distracted. Unmanned mobiles: Don’t leave your mobile phone unattended on a desk if it rings or vibrates constantly. Inappropriate work attire: Skirts that are way too short, revealing tops and suits from 1920 spell unprofessionalism. Coming to work sick: It only affects workmates and isn’t good for productivity at all. Work remotely if you must. Michael Todd – Small Business Connect Advisor, Penrith Valley BEC.

Minister for Ageing and Disability Services, John Ajaka, announced details of the popular Seniors Christmas Concerts, which for the fir st time will be held in some of the state’s biggest regions. Mr Ajaka said the concerts will be staged in Nowra, Newcastle, Tamworth and Penrith in November and December. The concerts give local seniors a chance to get out and appreciate talented performances without having to travel into the city and struggle with the Christmas bustle. “Th is year, the NSW Government is moving

concerts from inner Sydney to regional areas and western Sydney for the fi rst time, giving seniors across the state the opportunity to enjoy these popular events,” Mr Ajaka said. “We want to ensure as many people as possible across the state can take part in these events so two concerts will be held in each location.” The seniors concerts will kick off at the Joan Sutherland Theatre in Penrith, with performances at 10.30am and 2.30pm on Tuesday, November 16. s you grow older, an active lifestyle is more important than ever. Regular exercise can help boost energy, maintain your independence and manage symptoms of illness or pain. Only around one in 10 Australians over the age of 65 exercise enough to gain any cardiovascular benefit. Some estimates suggest that about half of the physical decline associated with old age may be due to a lack of physical activity. In order to improve your cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, bone and functional health, reduce the risk of disease, depression and cognitive decline there are a number of inexpensive ways to stay active, so why not try some of them out? Walking: Walking is a perfect way to start exercising. It requires no special equipment, aside from a pair of comfortable walking shoes, and can be done anywhere. If you want to add a social side to it, contact your local community centre and see if there is a walking group you can join. Senior sports or fitness classes: Th is will keep you motivated while also providing a source of fun, stress relief, and a place to meet friends. Tennis: Tennis can be played at your own pace. Find a partner who is similar to you and you’ll enjoy the benefits of some friendly competition.

Water aerobics and water sports: Working out in water is wonderful for seniors because water reduces stress and strain on the body’s joints. Yoga or Pilates: Th is combines a series of poses with breathing exercises. Moving through the poses works on strength, flexibility and balance. Yoga and Pilates can be adapted to any level. Tai Chi and Qi Gong: Martial arts-inspired systems of movement that increase balance and strength. Classes for seniors are often available at your local gym, retirement village, or community centre. Golf: Golf is very good for stamina and leg strength if played regularly. Gardening: Getting out in the fresh air while gardening provides hours of enjoyment while improving your strength, flexibility and suppleness. If you dread working out, it’s time for a mental makeover. Consider physical activity as part of your lifestyle instead of a bothersome task to check off your ‘to do’ list. The activities listed above are inexpensive, if not free, and there are plenty of ways for you to make exercise a pleasurable part of everyday life. Simple steps towards this include listening to music while being active, taking photographs of you and your friends or engaging in conversations with new people while exercising.

egardless of age or stage of life, the modern day woman is constantly on the go – kept busy with balancing various roles, routines and responsibilities. Whether running laps around the cocktail circuit, managing a growing family or a thriving career, the key to ‘doing it all’ and maintaining the necessary energy levels is a healthy and well-informed diet. Nature’s Own Naturopath Jodie Langley said the secret to achieving a healthy diet at any age is about knowing how to make the most of each meal for optimal health and wellness. “Many women have daily beauty rituals to help them look and feel good on the outside, however it’s just as important to employ daily

routines to bolster health and wellness on the inside,” she said. “With busy, on-the-go lifestyles, it’s especially important to be mindful of what we eat, to ensure that it helps, rather than hinders, our jam-packed juggling acts.” With National Nutrition Week beginning on October 13, Ms Langley has offered some expert tips to help women master nutrition at any age: Plan ahead: Avoid the common habit of grabbing something unhealthy because it’s quick and easy. Try cooking portion-prepared meals in advance. Consistency is the key: Avoid fad diets. The best thing you can do to avoid weight gain is manage with long-term perspective. Be pro-protein: Women often focus on calorie

intake rather than the specific nutrients needed. However, lean steak, fish or eggs are strong sources of protein that keep you fuller for longer. Cut back on caffei ne: If it’s still morning and you’re on your third cup, it might be time to swap every second cup for tea, or go one better and try dandelion tea, which is full of antioxidants to aid digestions. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Leave the office for lunch: For the career conscious, eating at your desk may seem like it’s saving time, but 10 minutes outside does wonders for productivity. Vitamin D: You can source small amounts from food like fish, salmon, dark green vegetables and almonds but the right amount of sun smart, safe sunshine is best.

ARIES

With rates on hold, review your mortgage

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

The full moon’s spotlight is accentuating the state of play between you and those closest to you. Th ink carefully during the next few weeks about the relationships in your life. Are they fulfi lling and satisfying or are some of them sadly lacking, making you wonder if they’re worth the effort? Your only solution may be to bring things to a head and clear the air. By doing so you will gain the clarity you are searching for!

The recent raft of positive economic data has encouraged the Reserve Bank of Australia to leave the official cash rate on hold at 2.5% in October. Rising consumer sentiment teamed with improving business confidence and climbing dwelling values showed there was no urgent need for a rate cut in October. With property prices on the rise and interest rates sitting at historically low levels, it may be the right time to get onto the property ladder or review your current home loan.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Something from your past is being stirred up which is making you feel vaguely uneasy. Instead of sweeping these feelings back under the carpet do your best to bring them to the surface and then resolve them once and for all. If you need help you could always talk to someone who inspires total trust and confidence. There is likely to be a connection with doctors or hospitals for yourself or loved ones.

The combination of historically low rates and competitive offerings from Australia’s lenders is extremely appealing for anyone considering purchasing property in the near future. By looking at your purchasing options now, you may be able to get ahead of the rising property prices. If shopping around, consider a product that suits your needs and has a more attractive interest rate, fewer fees, and/or offer loan features that can help you make a larger dent in your debt. On the flipside, for those that already have a mortgage, low interest rates provide mortgage holders with the perfect opportunity to repay their home loan faster and achieve their next financial goal sooner.

GEMINI

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Problems are likely regarding friendships over the next few weeks and one casual friendship could come to an end. It is also possible that other friends will be going through a lot of difficulties and shall require your understanding and TLC. Social plans are going to go upside down and you would be wise to double check arrangements that you may have made for any special events or outings.

Now especially is a good time to take control to see if there is a loan out there better suited to your goals – whether that is to lower your repayments, pay off your debt quicker, or to access some equity. Take time out to regularly assess your loan situation at least once a year to ensure your home loan still meets your current needs and future investment goals. Reviewing your home loan and lender, negotiating a better deal with your current lender, or switching to a more competitive deal could lead to home loan savings.

CANCER

Rob Lees and the team at Mortgage Choice in Blaxland and Penrith can help with any of your home loan questions.

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

The full moon falls in the area of your chart devoted to career and indicates that it really is time to take the bit between your teeth and mount a major offensive to improve the way you live, work and support yourself. Even though certain colleagues or co-workers can be difficult to deal with you are in a position to call the shots, so use your powers of persuasion to convince others that you mean business.

erts p x e n a lo e m o h l your loca

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

It’s full moon time and therefore your emotional responses are going to be intensified. If strong feelings arise, use them to clear the air rather than muddy the waters. Once you know where you stand, you can then act decisively and move forward in the direction that you have mapped out for yourself. Complications or delays are likely regarding any long distance journeys or communications so have a backup plan.

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Heaven help anybody who crosses you in the next couple of weeks as they will get more than they bargained for. The best cure is prevention, so next time you can feel yourself getting wound up, fi nd some physical outlet to help diff use the stress. It’s also helpful to recognise the triggers that set you off so that you can train yourself not to react to them in the same way. A little bit of forethought will do wonders.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Take things easy in the next couple of weeks as your emotions and anxieties may get the better of you. The full moon in Aries temporarily deprives you of some of your enthusiasm and energy, so this is a time when you should ideally pace yourself. Focus on what is most important and leave everything else on the back-burner for the time being. Be certain to rest and to take steps to look after your health.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Problems are likely in regards to either your romantic life or to do with your children. If you’re a parent, one of your offspring is going to need some extra attention either because they are not well or because they are being bullied at school. You will have to be very careful of what you say as somebody is going to take offence; one of you will be operating on a short fuse and will overreact!

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Problems are likely in your home environment and you would be wise not to get embroiled in any kind of power struggles as it will invariably end in tears. ‘It takes two to tango’ and whilst you don’t like to be dominated you need to be careful of laying down the law or you may be guilty of domineering others. It may be necessary to agree to differ and to try and fi nd a much more amicable solution to problems.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

You may be feeling somewhat frustrated because you haven’t progressed as far as you would like, but there’s no need to despair, because through patience your hard work will bring unexpected benefits. Don’t be afraid to confront a certain issue by sharing it with a sympathetic ear – you’ll feel as though you’ve unburdened yourself. Expect delays whilst travelling and expect complications with important paperwork.

Th is is a time of major endings and beginnings and everything is pointing to how you conduct yourself in your relationships with others. Misunderstandings threaten to undermine how secure you are feeling, but these can be avoided if you take the time out to explain yourself. If battling with someone over fi nances or a joint possession of some kind, don’t use any under-handed tactics to achieve the upper-hand!

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

You need to be prepared for hidden costs and expenditures as the full moon is shining in the fi nancial sector of your chart. Therefo re, avoid being impetuous or impulsive. Someone is making ‘all the right noises’ but something tells you not to trust them completely. Perhaps you have good reason for doubting their word, in which case be extremely circumspect and direct when dealing with them to avoid being let down.

Get active, not generous

I

see a lot of pleas to support such-and-such-fig htingsickness charity and it seems like every product has a pink “supporting breast cancer” promotion. Just imagine if even a small percentage of the billions of dollars spent on medical research went towards proactive education. Almost 37,000 deaths in England alone could be prevented every year if people walked for just 2.5 hours every week, according to a new report. A further 12,000 cases of people needing emergency hospital treatment for heart disease could be stopped and almost 7,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented. The study, from the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support, also showed that just 150 minutes a week of moderate activity – such as cycling or fast walking – could prevent almost 5,000 cases of bowel cancer and almost 295,000 cases of diabetes. “People who stay active are less stressed, sleep better, have a 30 per cent lower risk of getting depressed and reduce their risk of developing dementia,” the report said. “Physical inactivity now rivals smoking as one of the nation’s biggest health problems. Today it’s responsible for 17 per cent of early deaths in the UK.” Britain’s National Health Service’s recommendations are for adults aged 19 to 64 to try and be active every day. Th is includes at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week. The report comes after a study published last week found that postmenopausal women who walk for an hour a day can cut their chance of breast cancer by 14 per cent. Those who were more active cut the risk by 25 per cent. So the next time you have some spare change, maybe a gym membership might do more benefit than a telemarketing charity donation.

A day to be free

Douse the fire

N

ot everyone wants to or even needs to stick to a very strict training program. I’ll share some insights from T-nation, a site that anyone who builds any type of muscle will be aware of. The topic of “cheat days” or “free days” is big in the nutrition world, and people swear by them for both psychological and physiological reasons. I prefer to be a little more fluid with my eating. I eat well the vast majority of the time and only keep good food on hand, but when I go out with friends I’ll let loose a bit (sometimes more than a bit), regardless of what day it is. It’s a similar concept to a “cheat day”, just less rigid. You might have heard of it as 80/20 rule. I do love to employ a “free day” in my training program though, which functions essentially the same as a dietary cheat day. On the last day of the training week I go in and do whatever I feel like doing at that particular moment. Just about anything is fair game, so long as it’s not reckless and it doesn’t interfere with subsequent training sessions. My rationale for the free day is mostly psychological. I think that to make progress in the gym it’s important to stick to a logical plan, but once you’ve been training hard for a while you can start to get bored or stale, especially when you aren’t competing in anything or training for something in specific and instead are mostly training just for the love of it. If you’re training for a specific goal or competition, then free days may not fit into the equation, but if you train with more general goals in mind, it can be a great approach.

T

here is one underlying cause behind all chronic disease that drives the disease. If this cause is not dealt with then no matter what treatments you undergo, no matter what drugs or herbs or pills or potions you consume, you are going to see a return of the problem time and time again. Most treatment programs deal with the symptoms of disease as if they were the disease when they are actually the result of the disease. So what is this driver of chronic disease? Th is cause is, in one word: Infla mmation. That is correct, inflammation underpins all chronic disease conditions; diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, MS, Parkinson’s, Lupus, Rheumatism Arthritis of all types; all of these and more have inflammation as the main driver of the condition. Certainly you may have to treat the symptoms as well but if you don’t treat the inflammation too then you are only doing half the job. How can you treat inflammation? First, remove inflammatory foods from your diet. Thi s includes sugary, acid forming foods such as coffee, excessive amounts of red meat; pork and many deli meats or smoked meats. Artificial preservatives, colourings and flavours as well as artificial sweeteners are all inflammatory so eliminate these from your diet. Add soothing foods, such as oats, slippery elm, herbs and spices such as turmeric and fennel, ginger and chamomile tea. What supplements are benefic ial? Turmeric (especially the Cumerone extract), Boswellia, Salix alba (Willow Bark), Quercetin, Ginger, Rosemary and Olive leaf. A number of clinical trials using one or more of these herbs have shown to have a calming effect on inflammation. Naturally reducing stress helps too as stress causes infla mmation.

FASHION FIXATION by Katherine Tweed

I’ve found the ‘new black’

I

t’s bright, it’s feisty and it is so in season; citrus is the season’s new black. That’s right I am talking about the vibrant tangerines, zesty lemons and in-your-face limes that women everywhere are soon to be wearing through this season and into the next. Why the sudden outburst of the bright citrus colours? I have no idea but it sure is refreshing after the dark tones and deep colours that we were wearing all winter. Unlike the neon colours that citrus is so often confused with, although this season’s colours are bright, they are much softer to the eye. Citrus colours are not everyone’s best friend as they can clash with particular skin and hair tones but with the right styling, citrus can fit into anyone’s wardrobe. Nude tones go hand-in-hand with citrus clothing, especially when worn with tangerine. A pair of nude heels with a hot orange dress and a nude bag will look great for a night out but if you want to keep it casual, stick to the flats. If you want a more sophisticated look, team a lemon or lime dress with bold, black accessories and for a fresh, crisp look, maybe for an event by the sea, wear white accessories. In short, the basic colours, nude, black, white and sometimes brown are the best colours to match with a citrus outfit. Making the change from your usual go-to colours to the bright and stand-out citrus colours can be a little daunting so why not try starting small. Not only are the stores full of citrus coloured clothing, they are full of the bright coloured accessories as well so it is easy to begin incorporating tangerine or lemon into your daily wear. In saying this, don’t overkill it with the accessories; a bracelet or two will do and maybe a pair of earrings. Citrus nail polish is a defi nite YES but don’t even think about citrus lipstick, eye shadow or liner.

Before heading off...

Hot summer days

t is getting to that time of year when a lot of us are considering that dream overseas holiday over the Christmas break which is not that far away. Unfortunately these dream trips can sometimes turn into nightmares. But there are a couple of things you can do before you leave to help take the sting out of your holiday turning sour. Don’t forget insurance What do you do if your wallet gets lost or stolen? You land at your next destination but your luggage doesn’t? You crack a tooth while eating dinner? You slip on a hillside trek and get what you think might be your fi rst broken leg? Scenarios like this don’t need to derail your holidays. The right insurance policy can support you through holiday mishaps. So it’s important to make sure you have the right travel insurance policy for you. Decide in advance how you will access your cash There are a number of different options for carrying and accessing cash overseas so it’s important to plan how you’re going to pay for your holiday fun while you’re away. Firstly, you’ll need to fi nd out what the country’s currency is. You can then do a foreign currency exchange where you swap Australian dollars for the overseas currency. Th is allows you to carry some cash on you, which is great but can be a bit nerve wracking if you’re carrying too much money. You might want to consider using travellers cheques. Travellers cheques are handy because it saves you carrying large amounts of cash on you, but just remember some criminals are not deterred by the prospect of trying to commit forgery.

s the weather heats up the risk of heat stress in pets rises. Heat stress is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees and this will damage the blood clotting function. Death occurs from shock, internal bleeding and organ failure. Cats and dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin. In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on 45 degree day. Dogs and cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down. Animals will pant to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions. As with children, DO NOT leave pets in cars, even briefly, especially in the summer months. The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures greater than 50 degrees. Commonly I see people jogging with their dogs on a hot day. Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm. NEVER LET A DOG DO STRENUOUS EXERCISE WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 25 DEGREES. It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during our summer months. If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help. When temperatures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option. If this is not possible, then you can provide a child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimetres of water for dogs to lie in. Freezing water fi lled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down your pet.

Grand Finals are great, but there is a greater victory to be had had the glory. They experienced the cheering crowd. They celebrated. The y were presented with the trophy, a reminder of a great victory. In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, we see a similar situation; a huge crowd, also cheering, but celebrating a much greater victory. Th is scene takes place at the end of all things when a vast crowd, too great to

number, rejoices at the victory Jesus has won over death, the last enemy. Th is joyful crowd celebrates that in Jesus there is life, and not just life as we often think, but real life, eternal life, life that goes on forever with God. As the writer of Revelation tells us, because of Jesus’ victory, for those whose trust and hope is in him, for those who persevere with their faith and confidence

in him, “never again will they hunger...or thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb (that is, Jesus) at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will guide them to springs of living water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.” What a wonderful day this will be! And how good it will be if you and your family and friends are part of it!

It was good to see the past Presidents and the wives of the deceased Presidents of the Nepean District BA attending the dinner held at Penrith Bowling Club. Peter Chamberlin, myself, Bill Burns, Wall Ridge, Albert Lobley, Ken Tho mas and current President Neil Workman were also in attendance. Ken Ford was unable to attend but Noelene Hitchcock and Ester Crowley also graced the event. The sad side was the recent passing of past President Tom Dickinson who was President from 1995 to 1997. St Marys RSL Women’s Consistency Championship provided spectators with some exciting and very close games. As gale force winds interrupted the fin al half way through, the game was resumed the following week. Debbie Murray was eventually the winner, defeating Deby

Mick Gilfoyle Brien 153-117. Bowls Australia has launched a new competition, promoted as “a revolutionary, new, fast-paced, dynamic format of competition, which is set to catapult the sport into the 21st century”. The new action-packed format incorporates the best traditional elements of the sport and mixes them into an adrenaline-fuelled, actionpacked format of the game in a national city versus city competition, known as the Australian Premier League (APL). The nation’s newest competition, launched this week at the nation’s oldest bowling club, Melbourne Bowling Club in Windsor, featured tournament ambassador Mick Molloy, returning to the home of Crackerjack, along with APL players from each of the six inaugural teams.

Tennis in Penrith Tennis Australia has kicked off promoting the upcoming Australian Open by launching the AO BLITZ! By registering yourself for the AO Blitz, you give yourself and Penrith the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes such as a KIA Sportage, $10,000 cash, or tickets to the 2014 Australian Open. Term 4 coaching kicked off again this week, and Nepean has spaces available for anyone aged three to 90 years in our coaching program. Ladies Only classes, and Adult Group lessons are available also for those who have left their tennis career later in life. It was a night to remember last Thursday night at Penrith Paceway. The occasion was held to raise funds for the Leigh Plunkett Foundation, a body formed for the assistance of victims of Leukaemia. The night was indeed successful as with the holding of numerous auctions and paying attendance many thousands of dollars were raised. Race one went to Simple Saver NZ ($2.20) a kiwi having his fi rst Australian start and the way he won it certainly will not be his last. Driver Josh Willick took him straight to the lead and he went to the post an easy winner by 16 metres. Blissfull Lane ($1.90) kept the ball rolling for front runners leading all the way in race two and giving Blake Fitzpatrick his fi rst of a treble of winners. Local Trainer Joe Tanti won the third with Apache ($23.30) when after sitting behind the leader he got a nice inside run right on the line. Blake Fitzpatrick scored in race four with Lovethelifeyoulive ($4.80) who was

Lorraine Pozza three back on the inside but got out at the 600 metre mark and fi nished strongly down the outside to defeat Bending Spoons who also fi nished well from midfield. Benazir Bhutto ($2.70) came out quickly from the outside gate and led after 200m in the fifth. With Rob Morris rating him perfectly he managed to just hold on from second favourite Cold Native. Fire at Will ($5.30) put up a good performance in race six, he was last 600 metres from home but with urging from Gavin Fitzpatrick he circled the field around the home turn getting up to beat Leighs Delight by a metre. Blake Fitzpatrick got his third winner for the night when Western Union came from the second row an sizzled around the field to lead after a lap and from then on was virtually untroubled to win race seven. Luke McCarthy had an easy drive in the eighth and last when short priced favourite Regal Stride ($1.40) ran out a convincing winner by 10 metres.

Penrith Panthers hooker James Segeyaro could miss the start of the 2014 season after tearing his pectoral muscle while playing for Papua New Guinea last month. Segeyaro, without doubt the buy of the 2013 NRL season, now faces a long off-season of recovery. He will miss the World Cup and is unlikely to be fit for the fi rst round of the NRL season next year.

Fighting his way to the top James Te Huna is a star on the world stage, but he’ll always call Penrith home

T

NATHAN TAYLOR

he recent rise of Kiwi-born Australian UFC star James Te Huna has been nothing short of phenomenal. After beginning his fighting career as a 21-year-old in 2003, Te Huna, a Penrith local, has gone from competing in humble RSL clubs around Australia to huge arenas and stadiums in world cities like Las Vegas and London. But despite his crazy lifestyle and newfound fame on the international Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) circuit, the now 32-year-old will never stop calling Penrith his home. “I still live in Penrith, I do everything in Penrith,” Te Huna told the Weekender on Wednesday. “A lot of people talk to me about going over to the States and that I should be over there training to become a better fig hter but I hate being away from my family and friends, I love being at home. “I prefer to have training partners and sparring partners come to my home where I’m in my comfort zone. I don’t want to be somewhere where I don’t want to be, I hate it.” Te Huna is currently gearing up for his next worldwide televised fight, UFC Fight Night 33, which will take place at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on December 7. The much anticipated event, which is expected to sell out fast, will see Te Huna up against Brazilian and former UFC

Light Heavyweight Champion, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua. “A lot of people will say Shogun is past his prime and at the end of his career but he’s just come off a fight and I think I’ll get one of the better Shogun performances,” Te Huna said. “Whenever he’s fought after having time off through injury he’s crap but when he’s just come off a fight he’s back to the Shogun he used to be, so he’s going to be dangerous coming into this one.” Te Huna has fought 22 bouts in his MMA career for 16 wins (10 by knockout) and six losses. With fighters constantly developing new moves and ways to beat their opponents, Te Huna says it’s hard to go into a fight these days with a game plan. “I think a lot of fighters used to go into fights with game plans but now fig hters go into fights with different tools in their arsenal,” he said. “I used to go into fights with game plans but now I try and go in with an open mind and expect anything.” Te Huna admitted he wasn’t sure how long his UFC career would last or whether injuries will one day get the better of him but right now he’s enjoying every moment of it. “My biggest downfall is injuries – injuries play a big part, I’m always hurting myself,” he said. “I’ve been in the game for a long time, 10 years, so I’ve been banged up a lot. I’ve just got to be careful who I train with and that I do all the right things so I don’t burn out. I’m a lot smarter now, I’ve learned a lot in the last two years.”

Wolves go down: Sharks too good in season decider

Councillor John Thain and Jeff Baxter support an all-weather athletics track’s creation.

Fight goes on: All-weather track still desperately needed

Z

one Coordinator for Little Athletics in western Sydney, Jeff Baxter, says the fight for an all-weather athletics track and a new clubhouse at Blair Oval isn’t over. Funding for a new facility was promised by the Labor Party, however, with that funding no longer guaranteed, Mr Baxter said the local athletics community now has more time to put together a solid business case for an upgraded facility. “We have done too much work on this project to give up now. We had worked with David Bradbury for two years on this

proposal so it was easy for him to commit funds during the election,” he said. “In the next six to eight weeks we should have a decision on whether the all-weather athletics track should be at Blair Oval, St Marys, or Harold Corr Oval, Cambridge Park. “Then we will be able to go to the various government departments and present them with a really solid plan on what we want to do.” Penrith Councillor, John Thain, has been pushing for the upgraded facility, and at Council’s last meeting, his colleague, Prue Car, joined the campaign.

n the end, it just wasn’t their day. The Windsor Wolves ended their time in the NSW Cup with a 36-8 loss to Cronulla in the Grand Final at ANZ Stadium last Sunday afternoon. With only a small but passionate fan base in attendance, the Wolves entered the clash as outsiders, up against a side who had only lost five games all year leading up to the big one. However, despite their underdog status, the Wolves got off to a brilliant start with

the fi rst try of the game going to Fijian sensation Eto Nabuli. The Sharks hit straight back with two tries courtesy of Penani Manumalealii and Panthers-bound excitement machine Tyrone Peachey to lead 12-4. But despite a number of dumb errors including kicking the ball out on the full, the Wolves weren’t out of it just yet, with Nabuli crossing for his second try of the game to edge the score closer at 12-8. But unfortunately that’s where the points ended for the Wolves as the Sharks went on a scoring spree in the second half to post an emphatic Grand Final win.

t was a scene of jubilation, emotion and relief after the Penrith Panthers won the Holden Cup Grand Final over the New Zealand Warriors last Sunday. The Weekender had incredible access inside Penrith’s locker room post-match to soak up the excitement of the players and even be a part of the side’s sweetest of victory songs. Panthers fullback Kieren Moss, who scored a try and was sin-binned during the 42-30 win, said winning a Holden Cup premiership was a dream come true. “I’m lost for words, it’s a bit surreal, I don’t think it’s actually sunk in yet… I look around and see everyone celebrating and still have to remind myself we just won a premiership,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it with a better bunch of blokes. Everyone who I’ve played with this season has been really good and the boys stepped up today and the result showed. “I’ve been with most of these guys for a while and all of these guys are really special players to me and my best mates, I couldn’t be closer with these boys.” Panthers hooker Kierran Moseley, who only joined the club from Queensland this season, was outstanding during Penrith’s fi nals campaign and was certainly at his best on Sunday. “It’s the best feeling ever,” Moseley said. “Th is side is a fantastic side all over the park, the boys know their jobs, do their roles and we work hard for our brothers.”

Moseley admitted there was plenty of emotions running through his head during the Warriors’ second half fightback. “I didn’t know whether to cry or whether to be angry or happy, I was just feeling nervous,” he said. “I think everyone was waiting for someone else to do the job instead of putting their hand up to make the change.” Panthers coach Garth Brennan, who incredibly never lost a game when in charge of the side all season, said it was a thrill to be a premiership-winning coach. “We work so hard, you put a lot of passion and effort into it but I’m just really proud of the players, they’ve done the hard work and I’m just enjoying the ride,” he said. Brennan said he knew his side wouldn’t give up despite the Warriors getting to within a try of snatching an unlikely victory. “I know the culture that’s in this footy team, it’s probably one of the most impressive cultures I’ve ever seen in a football team, they work hard for each other,” he said. “I knew they wouldn’t give up, I knew they wouldn’t die trying and as soon as we got the ball back James Roberts turned the key for us and went the length of the field and we got the try.” Panthers boss Phil Gould was also in the sheds after the game and gave coach Brennan a glowing appraisal. “I think he is an NRL coach of the future and is a very important part of what we are doing here,” Gould said.

Wild celebrations after big win

The Panthers sing their victory song in the sheds following last week’s Holden Cup decider.

“His advancement will come over the next few years, he’ll coach NRL for sure.” So while the Roosters and Sea Eagles were busy preparing for their date

with NRL destiny, the young Panthers continued to party well into the night. Match report: Panthers topple defia nt Warriors – page 72.

Shelley managed to fi nish the 42.2km Blackmores Sydney Running Festival in 5 hours 39 minutes. “When I fi rst started training for the marathon back in December 2012, I hadn’t run more than 11km and two weeks ago, I ran 42.2km,” she said. “Training was hard, but in the end it was all worth it. I even remember when I couldn’t run the length of my street.”

Tennis: The AO Blitz was in Penrith last Saturday as part of the largest participation drive in Australian tennis history. Panthers take out thrilling Holden Cup decider post an almost premiership-clinching 22-6

NATHAN TAYLOR lead at half-time.

T

Th ings only got better for the ‘white hot’ Panthers when they hit the field to start the second half, scoring back-to-back tries in the opening seven minutes through Brendan Attwood and Mitch Clark to lead 34-6. With the Warriors essentially imploding in front of everyone’s eyes even the Panthers thought they had the game won. However, it wouldn’t have been a Holden Cup game without a good old fashion late comeback and that’s just what the Warriors did. The Warriors managed to capitalise on Penrith’s second half complacency to score four unanswered tries to get within a whisker of a shock win, bring the scores to 34-30 with 10 minutes remaining. To make matters worse, Panthers fullback Kieren Moss was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul with 12 minutes to go to enhance the Warriors’ momentum even further. Fortunately five minutes out from full-time the Panthers regained their focus to score a great premiership-winning try through centre Waqa Blake. Following a scintillating two-try

he Penrith Panthers fi nally have something to celebrate after being crowned Holden Cup champions for the fi rst time. The hugely talented crop of youngsters overcame the loss of their halfback and captain Daniel Foster with a suspected fractured fibula early in the game to battle on and beat the two-time premiership-winning New Zealand Warriors 42-30. The Panthers got off to the perfect start after speed demon James Roberts showed off his blistering pace with an incredible 70-metre try to open the scoring four minutes in. However, the Warriors hit back moments later through second-rower Raymond Faitala-Mariner to level the scores 6-6. But that was where the scoring ended for the Warriors for the time being. For the rest of the fi rst half the Panthers put on a rugby league clinic against their Kiwi counterparts scoring the next three tries in brilliant fashion through James Roberts, Kieren Moss and George Jennings to

performance as well as having a hand in the match-winner, Panthers centre James Roberts was awarded the Jack Gibson Medal. Inside the sheds: page 69.
