Penrith MP Stuart Ayres cleared of wrongdoing by independent legal inquiry

Enterprise, Investment and Trade Secretary Amy Brown, who led the recruitment.Healsosaid as far as he could determine, Mr Ayres and Mr Bari laro were “certainly not friends, nor had any form of personal relation ship”.NSW

The Premier said that Mr McClin tock found that Mr Ayres “complied with his obligations” under the code in a short statement issued on Monday.MrAyres welcomed the public release of the report saying, “it makes clear that I acted lawfully, honestly and had no conflict of interest”.“Ihave said consistently that I acted in accordance with the Minis terial Code of Conduct and that the recruitment decision was made by the public service in accordance with the law. That position has been clearly supported by both reviews conducted by Mr Head and Mr McClintock,” he said.

Mr Ayres resigned from his Ministerial roles in early August after Premier Dominic Perrottet recommended an independent review take place regarding Mr Ayres’ potential involvement in former Deputy Premier Mr Barilaro securing the role of Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner in New York.

Cabinet comeback likely

Mr Barilaro later withdrew from the position in a cloud of contro versy, under intense scrutiny and the subject of an upper house inquiry.Former ICAC inspector and inspector at the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, lawyer Bruce McClintock SC reviewed findings of a review by former NSW public services commissioner Graeme Head, along with Cabinet docu ments and transcripts from the ongoing upper house inquiry.

A cabinet comeback could be on the cards for Penrith MP Stuart Ayres.

“I have always acted honestly and with integrity in my service to the public of NSW. I would like to thank the many people of Penrith who have stood by me during this difficult period. Your unwavering support is truly appreciated and will never be forgotten.”

Opposition Leader Chris Minns however stood strong in opposing Mr Ayres’ return to cabi net.“Mr Ayres may not have breached the ministerial code but his actions in interfering in the selection process for the New York Trade Commissioner were wrong,” Mr Minns“Whensaid.the questions started to come into the NSW Government about the selection of John Barilaro to that position, Ayres repeatedly misled the NSW Parliament, he lied to the Parliament about the true extent of his involve ment in the selection of John Barilaro.”TheWeekender understands that Mr Ayres would happily return to Cabinet to perform Ministerial duties with the decision resting with the Premier. No call has been made at this stage.

Mr McClintock also interviewed Mr Ayres on September 1.

The WestCare difference

I was fortunate enough to attend the club’s Merv Cartwright Medal presentation night on Monday evening, which only confirmed that this club is far from arrogant and deserving of any negativity.

A mixed bag of Friday discussion

It is a special era; perhaps the greatest in the club’s long history. Enjoy it, embrace it and be proud of it.

Parents will now have to sort out care for their kids who are on their second last day of school, while medical appointments will need to be re-scheduled or cancelled.

A note on next week’s paper

Public holiday doesn’t pass muster

Whether it was the graciousness that Glen Liddiard spoke of at the beginning of the night, when he reflected on the club’s support since the passing of his father, or the humble Dylan Edwards winning the big award, there is a spirit and joy that circles this footy club atItpresent.isaspirit that is embodied in John Farragher, who continues to present the courage and determination award that was first presented in the years following his tragic accident on the footy field. The Panthers have never wavered in their commitment to John nor he to them.

Last Thursday night I had the great pleas ure of hosting my fifth WestCare fundraising dinner at The Coffee Club Nepean River.

Just hours after her death was confirmed, the errant Bandt Tweeted: “Now Australia must move forward. We need Treaty with First Nations people, and we need to become a BandtRepublic.”isa clown and anyone who voted for the Greens at the last election should be embarrassed that this bloke leads the party.

It came back with force last Thursday night with more than $200,000 raised.

Often good Ministers are lost to the wilderness when they eventually succumb to public pressure and stand down from their portfolios. The path to a return can be difficult, if not impossible.

But a national public holiday, heaping pain on businesses and parents, just doesn’t pass muster, especially after what we’ve faced in recent years.

Businesses have been through enormous challenges over the past few years, from enforced lockdowns to restrictions and now ongoing staff shortages.

WestCare’s efforts in the community, particularly in the family violence space, make a real difference to people’s lives.

It is nothing short of tall poppy syndrome in full flight and Penrith fans would be best not to feed the arguments by biting at low hanging fruit.

It can not leave Ayres, who – whether you like him or not – does his job with tenacity and determination, out in the wilderness.

Despite the public holiday next Thursday, the Weekender will still be delivered to all your favourite pick-up locations as normal.

Panthers silence the haters

As much as all of the tributes to Queen Elizabeth II have been beautiful to see this past week, next Thursday’s national public holiday is something of a stretch.

From the likes of Greg Alexander, who remains forever grateful that the club contin ues to name its Rookie of the Year award after his late brother Ben, to the pride Head Coach Ivan Cleary speaks of, it is clear that this footy club is getting plenty right at the moment.

The fundraising dinner is the main source of income for the charity each year, and the event hasn’t happened since 2019 due to COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.

Well done to all involved, especially Andrew Paech and his hard working team from WestCare, and the crew at The Coffee Club who all give up their time to ensure the night goes off without a hitch.

If your pick-up spot happens to be closed, you’ll be able to get your paper from Friday.

Now that an independent legal review has cleared State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres of breaching the Ministerial Code of Conduct over the John Barilaro saga, he must be rein stated to Cabinet.

If you ever needed proof that the Greens will forever remain a minor player in Australian politics, you only needed to view Adam Bandt’s insensitive comments in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.

Bandt BS proves why Greens are minnows

To throw an unexpected public holiday into the mix with 11 days’ notice only adds to the pain and will prove exceptionally costly to the business sector.

Premier Dominic Perrottet should act now, reshuffle his Cabinet ahead of the election and bring Ayres back into the fold to give him the best shot at an unlikely victory in March.

That should not be the case for Ayres, who still has way too much to offer the political spectrum.TheCoalition

is already losing a raft of experienced Ministers and MPs as the ship-jumping begins ahead of a predicted election defeat in March next year.

There is no better charity event in Penrith and there hasn’t been for some time.

If you have the unfortunate privilege of being on Twitter or any form of social media for that matter, you’d know that the Penrith Panthers have gone from admired to hated by much of the NRL community in the last couple of years.

There is nothing better than seeing people who Penrith has given so much to put their hands in their pockets and give back in the rawest way to an on-the-ground cause.

Of course we should all be given the oppor tunity to mourn the passing of Her Majesty.

There is a time and place for such commen tary, and any strong leader knows this. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is a known supporter of Australia becoming a Republic but rightly said now was not the time for such discussion and has focused solely on Her Majesty’s passing and the transition to a new head of Leadershipstate. comes to the fore in times of great sadness and difficulty. Bandt proved this week his name and leadership do not belong in the same sentence.

That will always flow to positive results on the field, and the Panthers find themselves just one win away from their third straight NRL Grand Final.

Rail workers will turn off Opal machines across the network from Sepember 21 in what is being described by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union as indefinite industrial action.

It comes as the union and the State Govern ment’s bitter dispute, which has continually thrown the rail network into chaos, rolls on.

It ends a four-year term with the Council.

Mr Winn will remain in the role until the end of October to ensure a smooth transition to an interim leader, as the search for a new General Manager commences.

Police could allegedly smell alcohol on the driver, a 26-year-old South Penrith man.

The man was arrested for the purpose of a breath analysis and was taken to Penrith Police Station.

He supplied the same name and a different date of birth.

About 1.50am on Saturday, September 10 police were patrolling Cox Avenue, King swood when they stopped a motor vehicle for the purpose of a random breath test.

About 7.25pm on Sunday, September 11, police were patrolling the Great Western Highway, Claremont Meadows when they stopped a motor vehicle for a random breath test.Police spoke to the driver, a 20-year-old Colyton man and the breath test proved negative. When asked if he was in possession of anything that he should not have, the man allegedly informed police that he had cannabis.Officers searched the vehicle where it is alleged, they located a container in the front and another container in the rear, both containing cannabis.

In some cases where an Attorney misap propriates assets of the Principal, this might constitute criminal conduct which could result in a Police investigation and the Attor ney being charged with a crime.

Investigations commenced which iden tified a 36-year-old Cranebrook man as a person of interest.

He was charged with ‘Larceny’, ‘Enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse’, two counts of ‘Break and enter house steal’, two counts of ‘Never licenced person drive vehicle on road’ and ‘Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously’.

You are not giving your power to manage your own affairs away, you are simply shar ing this power with someone else in case you are in a position where you need help doing things like operating your bank account, paying bills, contacting utilities providers, buying or selling real estate, or doing anything else business or financial related.

A man has been charged after he was caught high range drink driving in Kingswood.

Checks made on the passenger; a 27-yearold Cranebrook woman revealed that she was wanted on outstanding warrants.

There are many cases where Attorneys do the wrong thing and access a Principal’s money for their own benefit. In some cases, Attorneys have done awful things like sell a Principal’s property and try to keep the money for themselves.

The man’s licence was suspended, and he was charged.

Cambridge Park: Police sniff out drugs after vehicle stop

A man has been charged after possessing prohibited drugs in Claremont Meadows.

For example, if I decide to appoint my wife as my Attorney, she is the Attorney and I am theWePrincipal.willcontinue to look at estate planning documents next week.

Several break and enters took place in Cranebrook and surrounding suburbs during August this year.

There are two types of Power of Attorney. Under a General Power of Attorney, a person appointed can only deal with business and financial matters for you at your direction and for your benefit.

The man stopped on the nearby Council Chambers lawn and was removed from the vehicle before being arrested.

It’s alleged when the driver, a 36-year-old Oran Park man, wound down his window, there was an overwhelming smell of canna bis in the vehicle.

The second type of Power of Attorney is an Enduring Power of Attorney.

A number of stealing offences also occurred in the same month in Werrington.

Documents like a Power of Attorney can be incredibly helpful, particularly if you are unwell or as you transition into old age – you just need to get the right advice and think carefully about who you appoint before you doReferencesso. to “Principal” above refer to the person making the Power of Attorney.

Let’s start with the Power of Attorney.

A man has been charged after possessing prohibited drugs in Cambridge Park.

Fingerprints confirmed the man was supplying false details and his identification was confirmed as a 30-year-old from Hols worthy.Bothwere charged and were due to front court this week.

In this case, an Attorney must still only manage your financial and business affairs for your benefit, but they can do so without your direction (as you are unable to give such direction because you are incapacitated).

money or spend it on themselves, that does not mean it will not happen.

The only way that an Attorney can use your money for their own benefit or for the benefit of someone other than you is if you explicitly set that out in your Power of Attorney.

LAW and ORDER

While this is illegal, it is important that you remember that a Power of Attorney is a very powerful document and you need to have trust in the person or people you are appointing.IfanAttorney deals with a Principal’s assets inappropriately, they can be sued in the Supreme Court of New South Wales to get the assets back and remove them as the person’s Attorney.Thereis also a mechanism within the Guardianship Division of the New South Wales Civil & Administrative Tribunal whereby if a person is concerned that an Attorney is not acting in a Principal’s best interests, they can make an application for the Tribunal to review the Power of Attorney appointment.Inthesecircumstances, the Tribunal can decide to either leave the Power of Attorney in place, revoke it and/or appoint someone else, or in some cases the New South Wales Trustee & Guardian, as the relevant persons financial manager.

The man was charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, October 20.

The man was informed that it was an offence to provide false particulars and was asked again to supply his details.

No details were once again located under the name, so the man was arrested for the purpose to confirm his identity.

There were no particulars located under the name supplied.

A Power of Attorney is a document under which you appoint someone (or multiple people) to stand in your shoes and do everything you can do in relation to your business and finances.

For example, if you want your Attorney to be able to purchase Christmas gifts for each of your grandchildren or pay themselves a monthly stipend for the work they do for you, you need to set this out in the Power of Attorney document.

He underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.162.

You should carefully consider who you are going to appoint as your Attorney.

The vehicle failed to stop until the driver, a 36-year-old Cranebrook man collided with a gutter on Hawkesbury Valley Way which punctured two tyres.

About 10.25pm on Monday, September 12, police were patrolling Werrington Road, Werrington when they stopped a vehicle for a random breath test.

The State Government has launched an online Women in Business Hub to provide a range of resources in one place to support females to start or run their ventures.

New Hub to support women on path to small business success

Ms Tweedy encouraged all ladies to see what programs could strengthen their skills. For more information, visit nsw.gov.au/business/support-women-busiwww.service.ness.

The initiative comes after the 2021-22 NSW Intergenerational Report identified that although women’s participation in business ownership is projected to increase, it is still expected to remain below that of men.

“From a funding perspective being out of work for a number of years raising children can also lead to a financial gap when in comes to having income to start a business.”

Information on grants, funding, training, networking, mentoring, and mental health support will be invaluable according to Jamisontown business owner Melanie Cage.

“I’ve never done any business courses or bookkeeping and running your own business can be lonely, so to network and learn from others would be so helpful.”

! Taylan’s dream over: Taylan May’s dream rookie season looks to be over after he picked up a hamstring injury (pictured) in the win over Parramatta last Friday. A suspension for a high tackle means he’ll miss next Saturday’s Preliminary Final regardless, but he’s at long odds to play in the Grand Final should Penrith make it. He hasn’t been officially ruled out and there’s no question the club would give him every chance to recover in time, but I’m told he’s only a small chance to play again this year.

! Members for life: Panthers has gone back and awarded Life Membership to every player who contributed to the club’s 2003 Premiership success almost 20 years ago. The honour was bestowed upon the 1991 Premier ship-winning team but was overlooked in 2003. The club has also awarded Life Mem bership to the 2021 Premiership-winning side, including every player who played first grade during the season. The club’s Board recently approved the decision.

BOOZE BAN FOR TITLE RUN

! Accor locked in: Penrith will play their Preliminary Final at Accor Stadium next Saturday night even if it ends up being against South Sydney, who call the venue home. Despite both CommBank Stadium and Allianz Stadium being an option for week three Finals, Accor was always Penrith and the NRL’s preferred option. The Panthers don’t feel they have any sort of affinity with CommBank Sta dium while Allianz would feel like too much of an away trip and an unknown for Penrith, who are yet to play there. Tickets to the Preliminary Final against either Souths or the Sharks go on sale Monday.

! Cutting it fine: Corporate ticket holders were only issued their passes to last Friday night’s Qualifying Final on the morning of the game. The NRL handles ticketing for all Finals matches and faced delays in getting the tickets for the match out to the clubs.

The beers cer tainly weren’t flowing at the Merv Cartwright Medal on Monday night, with even Player of the Year Dylan Edwards knocking back a tradi tional beverage on stage with Greg Alexander upon receiving the main award.

! Mair to depart Penrith: Long-time Pan thers Equipment Manager Alan Mair is moving on at the end of the season. Mair’s departure is of his own choosing.

much further does it need to go? Smok ing was seen as healthy once. Boxers are forced to have months off after being knocked out. In the Super League, at the very least, a concussion draws a compul sory week off.

It will take good administration and cool heads to navigate a path.

Of all the discussion points about this wild afternoon – who got it wrong, what was right, and where to go next – the HIA’s should be the biggest thought bubble.Ihave been working sidelines for Fox League for years and the growth in the number of players forced off under HIA protocols is obvious.Ageneration ago, playing on after a concussion earnt a badge of honour. Today it is seen as a ticket to early retire ment and a dementia ward.

As stated at the start. One factor bleeds into another and we swirl around and around. Welcome to the storm.

While related, the sin bins last weekend are nothing in comparison to the HIA’s.

perfect storm is headed towards the NRL and it’s not Melbourne.

It is fact that NRL players are getting fitter, faster, stronger and more powerful. They are being paid better than ever. The exposure and pressure is only growing. So, basically, everything on-field is intensifying.Alsogrowing is knowledge and concern about brain injuries.

A

Let’s hope this weekend sees a safe passage for every participant.

The NRL has come a long way, but how

Cam Murray undergoes an on-field HIA. Photo: NRL Images

If more care and concern has to be taken, clubs are going to need bigger squads. But how does that fit in with finances and expansion – where critics say we already don’t have enough elite talent?TheDolphins and maybe an 18th club can improve revenue, but they need players – and maybe every club will need more players if HIA protocols are tightened.Thehierarchy will want more players and teams to maximise its broadcast revenue and compete with other codes. How do you generate more players if Mums and Dads are more educated and concerned about head injuries? And it’s not as if country rugby league or junior participation is booming anyway.

Showing up on the radar are blips like participation, expansion, perception, revenue… and their compli cating factor, head injuries.

Like a good team, one relies on another. Last Sunday, a compelling but chaotic 80 minutes of game-time between the Roosters and Rabbitohs ran for more than two hours in real time, as seven players were sin-binned and five more sent for Head Injury Assess ments (HIA’s), of whom three didn’t return, including James Tedesco.

We have already seen players forced into early retirements from head knocks. Others are walking a tightrope. What happens from here?

Game 1: Elimination Semi-Final –Parramatta Eels v Canberra Raiders. Friday, September 16 – CommBank Stadium, Parramatta. Kick-off: 7.50pm.

hile the mighty Panthers and Cowboys take a well-earned rest, there are still two NRL Finals games to navigate through this weekend.

PeterwithLang

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart would have been incredibly proud of how his Green Machine never gave up and played their hearts out against tremendous opposition last Saturday. If they play with as much spirit and flair against the Eels, they will be in with a shot of upsetting Parramatta at their home ground. In saying that, Parramatta were fierce for the first 50 minutes of their match against the Panthers, until their completion rate went down the toilet and their halfback went down with 20 to go. I saw enough from the Eels however to confidently predict that they can bounce back and defeat a tough Raiders outfit by the narrowest of margins.

My tip: Eels by 2.

All four teams in action will know that only two can go through to the Preliminary Final to meet either Penrith or North Queensland for the chance to make the 2022 NRL Grand Final. The other two can start planning their Mad Monday celebrations.

Game 2: Elimination Semi-Final – Cronulla Sharks v South Sydney Rabbitohs. Saturday, September 17 – Allianz Stadium, Sydney. Kick-off: 8.00pm. That was an extremely gutsy and impressive

My tip: Rabbitohs by 12.

So once again, here are my fearless predictions for this week.

W

performance last weekend by the Bunnies against their arch rivals, while the Sharks used up plenty of juice in their clash against the Cowboys. It’s difficult to see Cronulla being able to lift themselves for this do-or-die contest, against a battle-hardened South Sydney team, many of whom, played in last year’s Grand Final. This is where I think the game will be won and lost, big-game experience, the Rabbitohs have it, the Sharks don’t. The Bunnies’ defence also looked far more impressive while Cronulla leaked 32 points.

The Panthers were put under pressure early, but scored first through Robert Jennings.

Using an Omi Channel

Schedule what you can Most marketers would advise you against automating your social media because your social media page will sound like a robot. But automation is only good if you know how to use it. You can schedule posts that are not time-sensitive, such as:

can be tiring and time-consuming. You can manually edit the photos using Photoshop, or you can use Canva’s resize feature to resize them in one go. Using Facebook’s Meta Business Suite will help with both the scheduling and using the different formats.

If you feel like you’re spending too much time on social media, yet you’re wondering whether your efforts are actually making any difference, then it’s time to step back and evaluate your strategy. Here are some effective and proven social media hacks that will help small business owners to make the most of social media without spending countless hours on it.

Optimise your images for all social media platforms

WESTERN

– Messages or quotes

– Evergreen blog articles

If you’re just starting out on social media, the quickest way to increase your presence is to collaborate will people who are already established in the platform you are using. To do this, you need to look micro-influencers, or those users with a strong following within your target audience. You can connect with these people and work with them to bring more exposure to your business.

S

One of the best ways to increase social media marketing ROI is through cross-post ing using an Omi channel approach. Don’t limit your social content to just one plat form. You can take advantage of the other platforms to promote your content. You can post Instagram photos to Pinterest, while you spotlight blog posts on your Facebook Page.

– Events (to build up the hype)

BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011

ocial media plays an important role in promoting your business, regardless of the size of your business or what industry you are in. But growing your social media takes more than just posting a random update or two. It is a long-term process that is often time-consuming.

– Service or product promotions

If you want to drive more traffic to your website, this will do the trick. All you need to do is create multiple posts that focus on different parts of your article. Aside from highlighting your new article, this also saves you time from thinking of new topics for your social media posts. Make sure to schedule the posts at different intervals to maximise their exposure.

Use social media micro influencers to get more exposure

so delays and disruptions will unsettle your usually genial Gemini demeanour. Circum stances are constantly evolving, so keep your schedule flexible and your mind open to sudden changes. It is a suitable time to do research or revise written work (rather than take a trip or launch a new project). But don’t believe everything a colleague or rel ative tells you. The buzz words for this week? Adapt, amend, double-check, revise and redo.

Tuesday looks lively, as the Venus/ Uranus link propels you into an excit ing new world of possibilities. You’re pursuing a challenging personal pro ject with extra creativity, passion and purpose, but a partnership or friend ship requires more clarity. Avoiding complex issues won’t make them magically disappear. So it’s impor tant to communicate your intentions clearly and concisely – especially when it comes to a romantic relation ship or a joint venture.

If you’re not careful then an unre liable relative or a questionable ac quaintance could lead you astray. So keep your realism radar on high and avoid getting caught up in dubious schemes. You’re learning some hard financial lessons, as Saturn stirs up your money zone. Clever Capricorns will budget wisely, and favour saving over-spending. Strive to build your outer material security – as well as your inner emotional security. Both are equally important to the future.

AQUARIUS

Librans love things to run smoothly but there’s unpredictable planetary energy about this week. Mercury is reversing through your sign, so life is likely to veer off in an unexpected di rection. Which could be wonderful or stressful, depending on the circum

You love to hear the sound of your own voice as you chat, converse and communicate. However, sometimes you can confuse TALKING about something with actually DOING it! If you think things through and then act with passion and purpose, then the week will go well. But if you don’t walk your talk, expect problems and delays at every turn. Be inspired by music

This week Mercury is reversing through your relationship zone, so communicating with your sweetheart, boss or best friend could be problem atic. Then the weekend looks extra tricky, when nebulous Neptune also scrambles signals and confuses com munication (especially involving work or health). So don’t accept informa tion at face value and don’t believe everything you hear. Take the time to do some solid fact checking before you

This week’s restless stars boost your bohemian side and your adventurous nature. But, if you are too recklessly impulsive (especially on Monday and Tuesday) then you could find yourself involved in an argument, accident, financial fiasco or friendship drama. Sensible Saturn (in your sign) encour ages you to pace yourself and think things through before you proceed. So astute Aquarians will choose creative problem solving over unpredictable

If you daydream the week away, then you’ll just end up feeling dazed and confused. Instead, try channel ling your creative energy into relation ships, joint ventures, spiritual pursuits or helping others. When it comes to a partnership, you’re keen to pursue a particular course of action. But is a loved one on the same page? Take the time to double-check, otherwise you could find you are veering off in completely different directions. Clear communication is the key.

It’s going to be a confusing week so try to keep your Crab cool. Avoid spreading unsubstantiated gossip and blurting out things that you’ll lat er regret. Take the time to check the facts thoroughly. The more discreet and diplomatic you are, the better the week will be. But it’s definitely a delicate balancing act. If you are too obliging and say ‘yes’ to everyone and everything, then you’ll be over whelmed and find you’ve bitten off more than you can comfortably chew!

Larvae – The hatched eggs release larvae which move away from light, deeper into carpets and under furniture before developing into pupae. The larvae feed on organic debris and at this stage can consume tapeworm eggs, allowing them to become an intermediate host for the development of

Tackling fleas as weather warms up

If your pet is scratching or has skin damage, it is best to have them checked by a vet to decide the best next steps.

o you struggle with keeping your pet flea-free? Don’t be alarmed, you’re not the only one. During the warmer months fleas are particularly common. They make our pets’ lives itchy and uncomforta ble. The answer to keeping fleas off your pet is simple – prevention.

Fleas are tiny, dark brown parasitic insects that infest the coat and skin of pets. They can jump up to 150 times their own length, making the transfer of fleas between your pets difficult to prevent. Their remarkable jumping skills also allow them to transit easily from surrounding environments to your pet.

Only five per cent of fleas live in the envi ronment as an adult and 95 per cent of fleas live as eggs, larvae, or pupae. For effective flea control, it is essential to break the lifecycle in the environment. This is a crucial part of flea management and prevention.

What are fleas?

Fleas are the number one cause of skin disease in pets and can cause problems ranging from simple itchiness to weeping sores, scaly skin and infection. Some animals are allergic to flea bites (a condition known as Flea Allergy Dermatitis), where one bite sets off an auto-immune reaction. All skin conditions require veterinary treatment. Fleas breed at an enormous rate. The fleas you see on your dog represent only 5-10 per cent of

the fleas within their environment. The rest of the population is represented in the egg and larval stages found in your carpets, furniture, bedding, and garden.

How do I know if my pet has fleas?

Fleas form cocoons which can remain dormant for astonishingly long periods of time. They inhabit the garden, carpet, and furniture until they are able to hitch a ride on your pet. They jump great distances to find a host and bite both pets and humans.

One of the first signs of a flea infestation in your pet is itching. On inspection of your pet’s coat, you will likely see one or more fleas moving around on the surface of your pet’s skin. You may also notice tiny black particles that look like dirt; these could be flea drop pings. An adult female flea lays an average of 20 to 30 eggs each day.

Adult fleas – Jump onto your dog or cat, feed on their blood and then start laying eggs.

Eggs – One female lays an average of 30 eggs per day, which drop off into carpets and bedding before hatching.

can take as little as two to three weeks and as long as 12 months. To rid your pet and household from fleas, you must break this cycle.

The lifecycle explained

How do I protect my pet from fleas? There are many different flea products available to purchase, so choosing the right one for your pet type and age is essential. Preventatives come as ‘spot on’ applications are easy to use and last three to four weeks or oral tablets that work as an effective birth control for fleas, interrupting the lifecycle. It is sometimes necessary to treat both the pet and the environment.

corn is straight-forward and painless. A visit to your podiatrist to have it debrided will have you up and walking painfree by the end of the consultation, however there are measures you can take to prolong the rate of recurrence. This includes accom modative and supportive footwear to mitigate some of the undue stress at the site of the corn, as well as regular emollient or heel balm application to keep the skin from developing further callous. Regular treatment from your podiatrist is still recommended in this case as we find corns typically do return over time. Warts involve a more complex management plan. This lesion is the result of a viral infec tion that presents as white, wax-like tissue and often has black dots throughout. Warts will typically hurt to squeeze (unlike corns) and may even bleed. n a near daily basis, podiatrists diagnose and treat a number of different lesions exclusive to the foot; plantar warts and corns being the two most common. Differentiating between the two is important as it decides the most appropriate management.Cornsdevelop as a result of focal or localised pressure, similar to callous. Over time this compact accumulation of hardened skin can bury deeper into the bottom surface of the foot and cause pain. Some patients may develop corns over the top of the small toe joints as well; typically due to tight or narrow fitting

A podiatrist will remove as much wart tissue as possible, similar to a corn, however topical medication is generally applied to irritate the remaining wart tissue and bring about an immune response from the body. This may need to take place for a number of weeks depending on the severity of the case, but a few things you can do from home between consultations will benefit greatly, such as:

care not to touch the warts with bare fingers; research suggests transmission to other sites of the foot can take months to develop, meaning you wouldn’t realise you’ve spread it until it’s too late!

In summary, for general home or business use, I would look for an IPS panel, 27” or larger size, 1440p resolution and 75Hz refresh rate, as well as an adjustable stand. For a gaming monitor, at a minimum, I would look at IPS or VA panel, 27” or larger, 4K resolution and 144Hz refresh rate or higher.

Dealing with an SMSF in divorce is not straightforward, and is just another complex ity that needs to be considered before estab lishing one.

FUTURE FINANCIAL SERVICES • 4704 8585

For most SMSFs, the husband and wife are both members of the fund. The trustees are usually either the husband and wife, or a corporate trustee with husband and wife as the directors. The end result of this is that, in order to operate the SMSF, both husband and wife are required to authorise all actions of the fund.

Resolution: Resolution refers to the number of pixels (dots) that appear vertically and horizontally to make up the screen. The three most common resolutions are 1080p (FHD) , 1440p (QHD) and 4K (UHD).

Refresh Rate: This is the number of times the screen image is refreshed per second. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the

he monitor you buy will reflect the primary use you plan for the moni tor, general home use, business use, graphic intensive use or gaming. So what are some of the things to consider?

Panel type: Four main types of panels are available for computer monitors. The best price point is In-Plane Switching (IPS), which most computer monitors use. It is a technology that provides sharp and bright image quality, with excellent colour and good view angles. Vertical Alignment (VA) and Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) are becoming more mainstream, but IPS is at a better price. I would avoid Twisted Nematic (TN) monitors due to poor contrast and colour performance.

Self-managed super when divorce hits MONEY MATTERS

elf-managed superannuation funds (SMSF) have a lot of complexities that are often overlooked when established. One such area that is virtually never consid ered upfront is, what happens to the SMSF in the event of divorce?

WITH ALEX MCKENZIE

It is unlikely that, in the event of divorce, the former partners would like to remain in the SMSF together. The usual course of events is to wind up the SMSF and for each member to make arrangements for their own superannuation. Both parties are required to agree to this course of action and, in most cases, they are usually in agree ance to wind up the fund. The mechan ics in doing so theinowncauseunfortunately, can, problems.Thefundwillassetsand, alllikelihood, insurancesso, inordertowindupfund, theseneed

T

Adaptive sync: This matches the refresh rate and video output between the graphics card and the monitor. While primarily used for gaming, it has become commonplace on most monitors.

Monitor size: Bigger is not always better; you need to consider your field of view and desk space. Monitors still follow the US measurements and are described in inches. The best value for money screens is the 27-32” screen size.

Monitor stands: It is better to get a monitor with an adjustable stand and a VESA-com patible mount. The adjustable stand will save you from having a pile of books under neath your monitor. While a VESA mount will allow you to use third party desk and wall mounts.

S

to be addressed. This is more complicated if the SMSF has pooled assets (as opposed to segregated assets). If the SMSF pools assets, it means that the fund itself owns the assets, not any one member. This is necessary if the fund holds single large assets such a property. As no member owns any particular assets, the trustees (i.e. the divorcing couple) must agree on how these assets will be treated.

WITH DAVID NORRIS NORTEC IT • 9894 9514

Curved verses flat: The idea behind curved screens is that you do not have to adjust your head quite as much when viewing them. There is a price premium attached to them. I use two 27” monitors angled towards me, but I could have chosen to use a 32” curved screen instead.

Both members may wish to retain a particu lar asset in their own super fund post split, or one member might like to sell an asset the other would like to retain. If the couple would like financial advice in relation to the fund, the financial advisor must provide advice to the individual as well as the trustees of the fund on the impact of the advice. That would require both partners having to agree to advice in relation to each other individually.

At a minimum, I would look at a 1440p (2560x1440) monitor. Although the price point to jump up to the 4K (3840x2160) is not significant and will make games and moves quite sharp.

The insurance can be even more compli cated. Given that it is compulsory to have an insurance strategy for an SMSF, it is typical for the SMSF to own insurance on the lives of the members. In the event that the SMSF is wound up, it can obviously no longer hold the insurance. In this scenario we hope they we are able to transfer the ownership and retain the cover. This is not always possible; depend ing on the cover, it may be necessary to cancel the insurance and replace it.

Are you in the market for a monitor?

image is in any motion in games or movies. 60Hz is fine for most home and business users. Gamers must start at 144Hz or higher, with 240Hz becoming the standard.

ustralasia’s independent voice on vehicle safety, ANCAP, has announced five-star safety ratings for three new electric vehicle (EV) models – the Tesla Model Y, Kia Niro and Genesis GV60.

The Tesla Model Y demonstrated high levels of performance for its ability to avoid a crash with another vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist, and maximum points were awarded across the majority of collision avoidance test scenarios. The Model Y is also fitted as standard with a direct Driver Monitoring System (DMS) which uses on-board camerabased monitoring to detect a distracted driver and automatically enhances the sensitivity of the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system to be more reactive if distraction or impaired driving characteristics are detected.

“All three models offer high levels of safety performance across the range of ANCAP assessment areas, demonstrating the clear ability for electric vehicle models to tick both the safe and green checkboxes.

“It’s very frustrating primarily because our men’s team was looking good. We had strong numbers, good athletic ability,” he said.

In another blow to the Ducks, the club won’t play any home games this season at King swood’s Doug Rennie Fields due to facility upgrades.Boththeir Men’s and Colts teams will tackle the Sydney Uni Lions this weekend at Neptune Park.

“That was really disappointing to see. COVID really hurt that and the wet weather,” White said.

While the mighty Nepean Ducks are back for another Gridiron NSW season, they are low on numbers after losing a lot of talent and expe rience following last year’s cancelled season.

Ducks President Darren White said last year’s cancelled season due to COVID, along with the wet weather earlier this year, has hampered the momentum of the once thriv ing sport.

“Where we finished in 2020 was a good posi tive direction, in the playoffs. A lot of the boys didn’t come back for a variety of reasons after having that two-year break.
