I van Cleary’s management of the next two weeks will be intriguing to watch. Until now, there has always been some thing to play for – a home Final, the Minor Premiership, choose your poison. But with the J.J. Giltinan Shield bubble wrapped in Andrew Abdo’s boot and heading to BlueBet Stadium on Friday night, the mission for Penrith over the next fortnight is to simply get through the games against the Warriors and Cowboys unscathed. All eyes are very much now on the Finals and that first game at BlueBet in a fortnight’s time, but there’s still 160 minutes of football to come between now and then. This Friday’s twilight game against the Warri ors gives Penrith a chance to flex their muscle against a bottom eight side with little to play for, likely eyeing off a nice off-season break. While the Warriors will not necessarily be easybeats, their performance against the Cowboys last Friday would suggest they may have put the cue in the rack for season 2022, and there’s no doubt a trip from across the Tasman to the foot of the Mountains to play the defending champions in front of a sellout home crowd is a daunting task. The Panthers welcome back James Fish er-Harris for this one, and importantly Jarome Luai returns early from a knee injury. He will partner with Sean O’Sullivan as the Panthers start to feel a little bit of normalcy again. O’Sullivan has done well in Cleary’s absence. He lacks the game management of the compe tition’s top halfback in Nathan Cleary but his kicking game against the Rabbitohs last week end was superb. He also likes to play to the right which has given the likes of Stephen Crichton more ball and perhaps made Penrith a little more unpredictable (not that there’s much any team can do to stop the left-side onslaught when it’s firing). His kicking game will again be important here – if he keeps turning the Warriors around, it’ll frustrate them out of the game as the minutes roll on, especially if Penrith turn up with the defensive attitude they showed against Souths last Thursday night. But Luai’s return will ensure the pressure is eased on O’Sullivan somewhat, or at least the spotlight is not as bright. With a set completion rate better than any other side in the competition (81 per cent), Penrith should be able go through the motions here and get the job done with relative ease, potentially allowing Cleary to rest some players as the game draws on. With the likes of Melbourne, Parramatta, the Roosters, Souths and North Queensland producing devastating scorelines last weekend, there’s a school of thought that Penrith too needs to put on a score to prove they’re ready for the Finals and in the kind of form that September football calls for. While I’m not sure a cricket score is necessar ily needed here, it would certainly be a strong response to what some of the other contenders have produced – and it’d be nice to watch too. I’m struggling to see anything other than a Penrith win here. In the end, it might just be a question of by how much. Tip: Panthers by 24.

Stephen Crichton in the clear (again).

Battle of the West III: There’s a long way to go before this scenario plays out but if the NRL ladder remains as is, and Parramatta finish fifth, it could set up a massive Panthers v Eels Preliminary Final. That’s if Penrith win their opening Finals game and the Eels get through their first two matches. The game would likely be played at Accor Stadium. Approved venues for a week three Finals game in Sydney are Accor, CommBank Stadium and Allianz Stadium. While a trip to the new Sydney Football Stadium would be nice, Accor would likely be the winner with a crowd of more than 50,000 likely. Meanwhile, the NRL has finally put Grand Final tickets on sale this week.

Shield is ours: The NRL were quick to approve Penrith’s request to be presented with the J.J. Giltinan Shield after Friday night’s clash with the Warriors at BlueBet Stadium. After some back and forth between Penrith officials and the NRL on Friday morning, head office gave approval for the shield to be presented a week before the end of the regular season given the Panthers have wrapped up the Minor Premiership. After some confusion at first, it’s been confirmed suspended co-captain Nathan Cleary can take to the field post-game to hoist the Shield with Isaah Yeo.

! Shirts on: Penrith has released a Minor Premiers t-shirt and poster for fans to collect. The shirt features several key Panthers players, along with a list of the entire squad alongside the Minor Premiers branding. There will be no standard Finals shirt this year, though there will likely be a Grand Final and Premiers tee should the Panthers get that far. The Minor Premiers shirt is available from the Panthers website.

May remains quiet: A huge chunk of the Penrith squad were put up for media inter views on Monday, but one notable name was missing: try-scoring machine Taylan May. The winger, who turned 21 last week, hasn’t been put up for media opportunities all season, perhaps due to his upcoming court hearing in Queensland.

Family affair: Don’t underestimate the power of family at the Panthers. It is something that has driven the squad for the past couple of seasons. Just take a look at the smiles on Isaah Yeo, his partner Ashleigh and their young bubs after last Thursday’s win over the Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium. So many of the players have young kids, and it’s ensured they’ve matured quicker than the average NRL player and kept them grounded. History will show how impor tant it was in this era of success.

Calling BlueBet home: Regardless of the ongoing stadium saga, you can lock in the 2023 season at BlueBet Stadium. The Panthers have started negotiations with corporate partners and will soon put memberships for 2023 on sale. Should the new stadium not go ahead at the Paceway for whatever reason and a rebuild of the current venue is back on the table, my understanding is this would not start until the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Rest up: Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is likely to rest a host of stars for next Saturday night’s clash with North Queensland in Towns ville. Many of them won’t even make the trip up north and will remain home to prepare for the following weekend’s opening round of the Finals. I’d be very surprised if Api Koroisau and Isaah Yeo, among others, make the trip.

Grand Final Lunch: The NRL has sched uled its official Grand Final Luncheon for Friday, September 30 at the Fullerton Hotel in the city. Fox League and SEN broadcaster Andrew Voss will host the event, which will pay tribute to retiring players and preview the Grand Final itself.

Marto drinks up: Liam Martin paid for his two bombed tries against the Rabbitohs last Thursday night by being encouraged to scull two beers post-game. He didn’t need too much convincing.

anthers centre Izack Tago doesn’t want to imagine what life would be like at another NRL club right now, pinching himself daily that he’s part of a Minor Premiership-winning team in his first full season in the top grade. Playing in just half a dozen games in his debut year, the 20-year-old St Marys junior is one of only two Panthers to play in every single fixture for the defending Premiers this season, the other being utility Jaeman Salmon.

Not only has Tago featured in all 19 of Penrith’s victories in season 2022, he’s also contributed to the winning in a huge way with 12 tries and seven try Speakingassists.with Extra Time, Tago praised his premiership-winning teammates for a beyond memorable regular season. “People praise me and Tiny (Taylan May) for having good seasons, but it definitely comes from the boys around us,” he admitted. “We came into a premiership-winning team, so we just basically need to do our job and the results will come.”

Tago said the Grand Final re-match was high in intensity and one of the “fastest” games he’s played in for a while. Despite being down late in the game, Penrith managed to stay calm under pressure to get the job“Sullydone.(Sean O’Sullivan) and Salmon defi nitely stepped up in that game but Api and Yeoy led us around the field pretty well too. I remem ber after one of the Souths tries they brought us in and basically helped us reset,” Tago said. “We were in the game for 70 minutes and we knew we could do it; we knew we could get over again. It just came down to execution and we ended up doing that.”

TAGO REFLECTS ON MEMORABLE YEAR NATHAN TAYLOR

“I don’t think too much about what it would be like at other clubs, but I’m definitely grateful to have a home at the Penrith Panthers,” Tago said.“Even though I’ve never played anywhere else, I feel how strong the culture is, and all the boys that come here from other clubs say that as well. It’s definitely a pretty special place to be.”The Panthers wrapped up their fourth Minor Premiership in their history last Thursday night when they clawed their way back to defeat South Sydney 26-22 at Accor Stadium.

Penrith will be presented the J.J. Giltinan Shield for first past the post following this Friday night’s clash with the New Zealand Warriors at BlueBet Stadium. Tago said it will be a special moment for the fans and players. “Our home crowd have been a big part of our winning this year and to have them be a part of that Minor Premiership celebration is going to be special,” he said.

Izack Tago is ready for his first NRL Finals in September.

Part of the successful Panthers Juniors system since he was a teenager, Tago burst onto the scene last season after strong showings in the NSW Cup competition. In June, he re-signed with the club until the end of 2025, shunning interest from several keen rivals.

Liam Martin’s future was uncertain after he was injured in Round 22. Liam Martin celebrates scoring the winning try against Souths. Photo: NRL Images.

Thankfully Martin was able to take to the field against the Rabbitohs because it resulted in him playing a pivotal role in the Panthers securing their fourth Minor Premiership over all and their second in just three years. “Ivan said, ‘minor premierships are tremen dous to win’, but he gave us a reality check straight after when he said, ‘but no one remem bers the Minor Premiers’, so he’s keeping us focused on the bigger picture,” Martin said. “The fact we’ll have it presented at home and in front of our fans will be a pretty special moment, so hopefully it’s a sell-out again.”

For the first time since the 2003 season, Penrith will be presented the coveted J.J. Gilti nan Shield at home this Friday night in front of a bumper crowd at BlueBet Stadium. Martin said while he can’t wait to celebrate their regular season achievements following the Warriors match, the team knows there’s bigger fish to fry come September.

M iracle Man. Medical Marvel. Whatever you want to call him, Liam Martin is just grateful to be playing footy after fearing his season was over with a serious ankle injury. During Penrith’s 16-0 loss to the Storm in Round 22, the 25-year-old had to be helped off the BlueBet Stadium pitch after rolling his ankle in the second half. Pictures on the sideline showed a dejected Martin with crutches and in severe pain. Fans were gutted; the Blues forward left devastated after the club’s doctor gave him a disappointing early“Whendiagnosis.Icame off the doctor sort of looked at it and because the swelling was up quite high, he said that wasn’t a good sign,” Martin told Extra Time on Monday. “So straight away I was catastrophising it. I thought it might be a syndy (syndesmosis injury) because I’ve had one of them before and knew what that felt like.” In the days following Penrith’s third defeat of the season, Martin was still struggling to walk due to the severe pain and swelling. After being cleared of anything major, he immediately began the rehab process so he could keep his slim chance of playing in Penrith’s Grand Final re-match against the red-hot Bunnies alive.

INSIDEfeature MARTIN’S MIRACLE RECOVERY

having two tries disallowed by The Bunker earlier in the contest, it was third time lucky for the “cranky” but determined backrower. “That was an awesome feeling, you could probably see how much it meant to me by the way I was carrying on after scoring it,” Martin admitted.“Ihadto make it up to the boys after my first two efforts failed, so when Api [Koroisau] tipped me up to run it and then when it came off, I was just ecstatic. I was holding onto the ball for dear life.”

“A couple of days after the game I thought I was no chance of playing… I ended up tearing a few ligaments, but the doctors said it was a bit of ‘carry on’ and they could strap it up and it would be right to go,” Martin said. “I iced my ankle heaps. I had a bucket at home with icy water in it the whole time. I was in every day getting physio treatment on it.”

The Temora Dragons junior managed to squeeze one training session in before last Thursday’s blockbuster encounter at Sydney Olympic Park, however that also ended up being quite problematic. “I did one training session and the next day I woke up and my ankle was bloody killing me, so I thought I did more damage,” Martin said. “But I managed to get through captain’s run on the Wednesday and by the morning of the game, it was good again.”

While still a fortnight away, Penrith will go into the 2022 NRL Finals Series as clear favour ites with the bookmakers and wider footy community.Martinsaid his side are going to have to be at their very best if they are to go back to back.

“The whole top four is playing incredible and what the Roosters did the other day against the Tigers – they’re hitting their straps at the right time too,” he said. “It’s going to be a tight contest and we’re going to have to play our best footy to try and get it done.”

As

PeterwithLang T rying to pick your favourite Panthers Minor Premiership team from 1991, 2003, 2020 and 2022 is a near impossible feat. Each side has their pros and cons but each team was still good enough to finish in first place after the regular season. So for fun I thought I’d select my ultimate Panthers team from the personnel which played in each of those four sides. To give the proper respect to each team, I decided to pick five players from each side. So without further ado, here is my ultimate Penrith Panthers Minor Premiershp team: 1. Rhys Wesser (2003) 2. Luke Lewis (2003) 3. Brad Fittler (1991) 4. Ryan Girdler (2003) 5. Brian To’o (2020) 6. Jarome Luai (2020) 7. Greg Alexander (1991) 8. James Fisher Harris (2022) 9. Royce Simmons (1991) 10. Martin Lang (2003) 11. Villiame Kikau (2022) 12. John Cartwright (1991) 13. Isaah Yeo (2022). Interchange: 14. Craig Gower (2003) 15. Nathan Cleary (2022) 16. Mark Geyer (1991) 17. Liam Martin (2020). Reserves: Dylan Edwards (2022), James Tamou (2020), Api Koroisau (2020). Some positions were hard to select, second row and props probably being the most conten tious. Leaving out players such as Tony Puletua and Scott Sattler felt wrong, but in the end, I’m comfortable with the selections I made. I also thought some positions picked them selves, Ryan Girdler in the centres was an easy choice as was John Cartwright in the second row along with Isaah Yeo at lock. The position of five-eighth gave me a number of headaches, as both Preston Campbell and Steve Carter were terrific in the number six but Luai is just a shandy above both those players, with his ability to play ‘eyes-up footy’ and turn a game on its head with incredible footwork. On the bench I included Craig Gower as the player who could cover five-eighth, half and hooker and while including Nathan Cleary on the bench might raise some eyebrows, I thought if Ivan can pick a winger on the bench, then my choice was also valid. This was probably one of the hardest ‘mash-up’ teams I’ve ever had to put together but that’s the beauty of rugby league, everyone has an opinion and it’s what makes lists like this fun to do.

The NRL has essentially declared its agree ment to play the Grand Final in Sydney until 2042 null and void after the State Government’s decision not to invest in suburban ground upgrades. It has already delivered new stadi ums in Sydney and Parramatta, and committed to a redevelopment of Penrith Stadium “It’s important to note that all options remain open from 2023,” Mr V’landys said. A late try has allowed the Penrith Panthers to escape with a 24-all draw against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium in their final match of the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup regular season. The result means that Penrith will finish the season in second at worst, and potentially win the Minor Premiership if Newtown lose in the finalDisciplineround. hurt the Panthers in the opening half hour, with Souths capitalising to take a 12-0 lead.Back-to-back sets allowed the Panthers to attack with Christian Crichton scoring off a great pass from Isaiah Iongi. Six minutes later, Crichton had his double. Penrith took an unlikely 18-12 lead to halftime when Jack Cole snatched an intercept in the dying seconds and raced 80 metres to score. Ill-discipline hurt both sides early in the second half, however it was Penrith who were made to pay when Peter Mamouzelos scored from a quick tap. Souths took the lead with 15 minutes remain ing when Josh Mansour kicked back inside for DeanWithHawkins.justtwominutes to go, Iongi crossed from dummy-half, with Kurt Falls converting to level the scores. Falls’ attempted field goal in the final seconds was unsuccessful, leaving the game drawn.InJersey Flegg at Erskineville, the Panthers wrapped up a finals berth with a 42-10 win over the bottom placed Rabbitohs. The Panthers got off to the perfect start, racing to a 12-0 lead inside 10 minutes through tries from William Fakatoumafi and Cody Lawson. Souths struck back with a pair of tries of their own, cutting the margin to two before Lawson completed his double for a 16-10 half-time score. The Panthers started the second half fast, with Keegan Russell-Smith scoring after two minutes. It was all Penrith from there, with back-to-back tries from Ativalu Lisati and Jesse McLean effec tively ending the match as a contest before Sam Lane and Jack Garrod crossed. With the bye this weekend, the Panthers will finish no lower than 4th, but can finish 3rd if results go their way.
