Why Penrith can still win this year’s competition

lang on league

with Peter Lang

T

ake a deep breath Panthers fans and don’t worry, Penrith can still win this year’s 2021 NRL Premiership. While the result against the high-flying Storm wasn’t ideal, there are plenty of reasons, not excuses, why it won’t affect the Panthers’ premiership charge this season. The first reason is, well pretty bloody obvious, the side was missing six of its best players which included its two captains, on-field playmaker, its most dominant forward and the best metre-eater winger in the competition. The side will be instantly better when Nathan Cleary returns. He is just as critical and important to the team as Andrew Johns was to Newcastle and Jonathan Thurston was for the Cowboys and that’s no word of a lie. The fact that they will be even better when Isaah Yeo, James Fisher-Harris, Brian To’o, Api Koroisau and Tyrone May return is another ‘Duuhh’ obvious statement. Take this sort of firepower out of any team, even the Storm and they will struggle against the best sides in the competition. I mean look at how Melbourne performed against the Cowboys in round 19 without three of their key players, let alone six. A positive about such a major injury toll however is that it gives young players, like Izack Tago and J’maine Hopgood valuable time in first grade and we saw on the weekend just how much those two players

improved from playing more top grade footy. The fact that an X-factor weapon like Tevita Pangai Junior has joined the team for the rest of the season is another reason Penrith can still win the comp. There’s no doubt the Origin campaign really knocked the team around this year. Injuries and missed training sessions all disrupted a football team not used to handling such adversity. Finally, have faith, the coaching staff, led by Ivan Cleary know the last few games have not been up to the high standard the team has produced over the last 18 months and they will fix it. What game I’m looking forward to: Eels v Rabbitohs. The Bunnies have had a dream draw of late and have been labelled ‘flat track bullies’. The Eels will be the Rabbitohs’ toughest test in weeks. My Tips: Knights, Dragons, Eels, Sharks, Panthers, Sea Eagles, Bulldogs, Titans.

Isaah Yeo returns to give Penrith a much-needed boost. Photo: NRL Photos.

The final word: The NRL match review committee has become such a lottery I almost stood in line the other day just to buy a ticket. How did Stephen Crichton receive a one match ban when the player who held onto his leg Cameron Munster got off ‘scotfree’ doing the same thing numerous times this season?

f ever there’s been a top eight clash robbed of talent, it’s this one. Both the Panthers and Roosters will be under-strength for this all-important battle on Saturday evening at Suncorp Stadium, but with so much to play for, it’ll be a case of getting on with the job for both sides. This game is all about the top four. For Penrith, victory would guarantee a top four finish and ensure no unlikely drop out of the key Finals block. For the Roosters, a win would see them well and truly in the fight to displace the Eels and grab fourth spot and a likely date with Melbourne in week one of the Finals. Trent Robinson’s troops have won their last four games – the past two against Newcastle and Parramatta in particularly impressive style. The 46-0 thumping they copped at the

SATURDAY, AUGUST 7 | 5.30PM | SUNCORP STADIUM | REFEREE: GERARD SUTTON hands of Melbourne back in early July is a distant memory. Talking of the Storm, they steamrolled Penrith last weekend in a game that will be quickly brushed aside given the amount of talent Ivan Cleary’s side had on the sideline. That said, it was disappointing to see the likes of Jarome Luai, Charlie Staines and Stephen Crichton produce poor games. Some of the cavalry returns on Saturday night with Api Koroisau and Isaah Yeo leading the charge. And Nathan Cleary has also been named and will hopefully return if he gets through some final checks later in the week. The Panthers will however be without Crichton, who copped a one week ban earlier this week for a moment of madness late in the Storm game. The return of Koroisau and Yeo will hopefully toughen up Penrith’s middle

defence – especially given the Roosters are a dynamite attacking side. The boys from Bondi have scored 94 tries this season, the third best in the competition behind just the Storm and Rabbitohs, and also sit third in line breaks and fifth in tackle breaks. When they get the momentum in games, they really put the foot down, and that’s what’s kept them humming along this season despite the lack of troops at different points of the year. Any side that runs out with James Tedesco, Angrus Crichton and Victor Radley on the team sheet is going to be hard to beat – throw in Daniel Tupou, Joseph Manu and rising star Sam Walker and you have a footy team that could cause plenty of headaches in September. And in a big boost, Jared WaereaHargreaves has beaten a dangerous contact charge and is free to play.

Penrith has named Tevita Pangai Junior to make his club debut and if you believe what he’s said in the last few weeks, he’s not just at the side for a quick pay cheque. He wants to make a legitimate difference to the team, so there’s no question all eyes will be on him on Saturday night. The Panthers need to ice their opportunities – we saw against Melbourne last week that if you don’t take your chances, the game can quickly slip through your fingers. For me, the path to the title starts now. Forget the Origin period and the hangover that followed, Penrith did enough in the first half of the season to ensure a top four finish. Now it’s just about being in the right form when the big games come. Around now is when you want to see the team heading towards a peak. Time to show the rest of the competition what they’ve got. Tip: Panthers by 10.

WITH THE MASKED PANTHER

HALF-TIME SHOW EXPLAINED ! I told you back in March that the bizarre half-time show that featured as part of the Panthers v Storm game was for a reality TV show. All can now be revealed after ‘Beauty and The Geek’ aired last Sunday night on Channel Nine, with the Panthers a big part of the program. The contestants had to perform a routine in front of the unsuspecting crowd at halftime, with host Sophie Monk and Pantherette Erin Camilleri watching on from the hill to judge the performances. ! Penrith’s preparations for last Saturday’s match against Melbourne were thrown into chaos when the NRL was abruptly shut down less than 12 hours before kick-off. Desperate to ensure its Super Saturday matches could go ahead, the NRL considered a raft of options including a possible last minute trip to Townsville to play the game there. Other rumours had the Panthers on a plane to Mackay. Referee Ashley Klein and other match officials were waiting in the foyer of their hotel, told they could be on a plane at any minute. As we all know, the game was eventually postponed and played on Sunday after the NRL and Queensland Health agreed on new biosecurity rules governing the league’s hubs in the sunshine state.

Sophie Monk and Erin Camilleri.

it’s a case of everyone chipping in regardless of the job.

! Api Koroisau will return for Penrith this Saturday night against the Roosters, but it’ll be a long time before he’s seen in a New South Wales jersey again. His indiscretions in camp are proving more and more costly, with the Blues reportedly telling Koroisau that he won’t be representing his state regardless of his 2022 form. ! James Fisher-Harris has returned to Brisbane and is on track to return against Souths in Round 23. He returned to Sydney for the birth of his second child last week, and as difficult as it was, has now headed back north to complete the season with Penrith.

! Talking of the post-match press conference, coaches now wear masks for these commitments – as part of the beefed up COVID-19 rules agreed upon by the NRL and Queensland Health. It’ll make for some quirky talking points in years to come, that’s for sure.

! Spotted: Panthers coach Ivan Cleary helping pack up the pull-up media board after his press conference last Sunday afternoon. With limited staff now allowed at matches due to the new biosecurity rules,

! Brisbane-bound forward Kurt Capewell admits he may try a new sport once things settle down with COVID-19. The 28-year-old says surfing is very much on his radar. “I don’t mind the hub life;

it’s been pretty good. The weather is nice up here… I look forward to getting to the beach as we are not that far away from the beach. So as soon as our bubble, hopefully, pops and we can go wherever we want, I’ll be definitely looking to buy a surfboard or something and get to the beach.”

! I told you last week that Penrith would likely have a fight on its hands to re-sign Viliame Kikau and that will certainly be the case. I’ve been told during the week there is “next to no chance” Kikau will sign a new deal with Penrith before November 1, which would mean he’s essentially on the open market for the 2023 season and beyond. The big forward will likely have to pick between money and club loyalty, because the Panthers are unlikely to match some of the offers he’ll get elsewhere. Rugby union even copped a mention this week as a possible destination for Kikau. ! If you’re wondering what’s happening about a Panthers Stadium redevelopment

announcement, don’t hold your breath. There is no chance the State Government will announce any major infrastructure projects, especially something as debatable as a stadium, during the current lockdown. I haven’t been told it’s off the agenda at all, but the Government obviously has much higher priorities at present. However, there’s no doubt its Budget will need significant re-shaping given the enormous amount of money needed to pay out support grants for businesses during this time. Watch this space.

! With the NRL now likely to stay away from Sydney until at least the Finals, it’ll end up being four home games that Penrith fans will miss out on this year – the Eels, Broncos, Rabbitohs and Tigers. Fans will be credited the value of those games when purchasing their 2022 memberships. The club’s corporate team is also working on plans for its sponsors, particularly those with corporate ticketing that couldn’t be delivered for the back half of the season.

HE’S READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE NATHAN TAYLOR

H

e may only be in Panthers colours for a short amount of time, but new recruit Tevita Pangai Junior is determined to make it as sweet as can be. The former Brisbane Broncos star arrived in the Panthers camp on the Sunshine Coast last week, eager to make the most of his time at his temporary home before he switches to Belmore next year. It’s an unusual circumstance for both the 25-year-old Tongan international and the Panthers club, who are desperate for an edge over fierce rivals Melbourne heading into next month’s Finals campaign. Speaking with the media for the first time as a Panther on Wednesday, Pangai Junior said he’s settling into his new club well thanks to some of his new teammates. “The first few days have been good. I’ve been walking around the resort seeing a lot of rep players and picking their brains, especially Isaah Yeo who has been really good for me,” he said. “I’ve mainly been hanging out with the boys that haven’t been playing like Taylan May. He’s a good young kid that’s got a great work ethic. Nathan Cleary as well, he’s been really good.”

While Pangai Junior is doing a tremendous job of making new friends with his teammates, it’s their respect he’s trying to earn first and foremost. The hulking forward, who has a well-documented controversial

past, said he’s doing everything he can to be the best version of himself. “I’m just trying to earn the boys’ respect and do all the little things on and off the field that this great club expects from us.

I’ve come here to improve as a player under the great coaching staff and great players around me,” Pangai Junior said. “I made it pretty clear that I wanted to come to the club even if it was just for a short time… there’s great players here that I can’t wait to play with and put on that Panthers jersey.” Pangai Junior will make his Panthers debut this Saturday night when Penrith take on the Sydney Roosters at Suncorp Stadium. Due to suspension, the South Newcastle junior hasn’t played in the NRL since Brisbane’s 46-0 thumping by the Rabbitohs in Round 15. He’s told Panthers fans not to expect too much straight away but that he’s excited to finally get back on the field. He’ll start from the bench on Saturday. “I’ve spoken to Ivan a little bit and I’ll probably play short stints off the bench. They’ve already got their team pretty much sorted but I feel like I can add some short stints in there to help them out whenever I can,” Pangai Junior said. “It’s just awesome being in a winning team, it rubs off on you. I just look around and see what they do training-wise and off the field and they are all really professional. It’s what I want to add into my game and into my life.”

W

ith the Olympics now in full swing and following last week’s piece on the best players in the competition, it’s time to look at who would claim Gold, Silver and Bronze for the best performed coach in 2021. Whether it’s their tactical nous, ability to rally the troops, experience or relationship management, this coaching trio are the best of a very good bunch. Claiming Gold, who else could it be but the greatest of all time, Craig Bellamy (pictured). His team was genuinely supposed to be weaker in 2021 following their premiership success. The retirement of a future Immortal Cameron Smith, his replacement Harry Grant has barely been on the field and the same can be said for Clive Churchill Medallist Ryan Papenhuyzen. They also lost one of the brightest young forwards in Tino Fa’asuamaleaui to the Titans. Despite this, they’ve put together 16 wins in a row and breaking all sorts of point scoring records, a clear Gold medallist for mine. Taking home Silver, much like the 2020 Grand Final, we have Ivan Cleary. The Panthers have won 16 from 19, and in those losses his son, superstar halfback Nathan has been absent. The team is conceding just 11 points per

game, which proves their premiership credentials. With some stars missing, defence might be the focus ongoing of his troops… for now. Coming third, and perhaps most impressively, is Sydney’s Trent Robinson. ‘Robbo’ has kept the Roosters afloat despite a horror campaign. They’ve had a disaster year with injury, in the space of a few months he lost three champions of the game to retirement in Boyd Cordner, Jake Friend and Brett Morris. To add to that, three-time premiership winner Luke Keary and Origin bookend Lindsay Collins. Despite this, they still have top four in their sights, a remarkable effort. With Finals to come, it’ll be interesting to see if Cleary or Robinson can jump Bellamy to claim to ultimate prize. For now, it looks like the master coach will remain top dog for at least one more season.

wins – the Titans, Sharks, Raiders, Dragons, and Knights – it’s likely that more than two

of them will finish on equal premiership points, and that 7th and 8th spots will be

decided on for and against. If it turns out that way, the Titans begin this race to the Finals with an advantage over the rest, with a for-and-against of minus 24, 34 points better than their nearest rival the Sharks, and a whopping 123 points better than the Knights, who sit in 11th place on minus 147. That’s a huge disadvantage for the Knights in this five-way battle, and they’ll almost certainly have to finish one win clear of the others if they can’t make up the points differential. That’s the bad news for the Novocastrians. The good news is that they play the Broncos twice, the Bulldogs once, and meet the Titans and Sharks in their other two games. It could be those two games that decide 7th and 8th. The Raiders have a tough run home, with games against the Storm, Sea Eagles and Roosters, while the Dragons have the Panthers, Roosters and Rabbitohs still to play. The Finals are probably a bridge too far for both of them. The Sharks have games against the Warriors, Tigers and Broncos, all very winnable, and their season could come down to that pivotal Round 22 clash against the Knights. I think they’ve shown enough at times this season to grab one of the two remaining spots, while the Titans, courtesy of that massive for-and-against headstart they have over the Knights, just might return to the Finals for the first time since 2016.

extra minutes ! Bad news for Dragons fans this week with captain Ben Hunt suffering a broken arm in last weekend’s loss to Souths. Hunt won’t require surgery, but will miss the next month of footy, meaning he’ll be back just before the Finals. The Dragons are currently in 10th spot, so Hunt’s injury is a huge blow to their Finals chances.

more than just h homebrew We are open and trading our normal hours and following all the Covid-Safe protocols

! The Sydney Roosters have announced the immediate signing of Dale Copley for the remainder of the 2021 NRL season. Copley has played 146 NRL games since making his debut with the Brisbane Broncos in 2009, with 14 of those being with the Roosters who he was with during the 2016 NRL season. “Dale is a player we know well, so it was a really simple decision to welcome him back to the Roosters and we’re excited to have him here,” said Roosters coach Trent Robinson. ! Last Saturday’s sudden NRL shutdown left the 2GB Continuous Call team with a significant problem. How to fill 10 hours of air time without two NRL games they were due to call? Thankfully with the likes of Darryl Brohman on the team, it wasn’t hard to find topics and the team somehow got through the stint.

! The sudden return of Monday Night Football forced Fox League to delay its airing of ‘Tales from Tiger Town’, the second episode of the popular documentary series. It’ll air next Monday night instead. Fox League also

recently aired ‘Ricky’ a short documentary on the career of Ricky Stuart. The network is building its library of content to ensure it has more than just old games to play during the week and in the off-season.

here are six teams who have comfortably booked their place in the finals, and given the gap between the good teams and the mediocre teams this year, the majority of the frontrunners have been assured of a spot in September’s big games for quite a while now. Which leaves two spots remaining and five teams locked together on eight wins and 11 losses, a remarkably low number of wins to be in contention at this time of the season. It was only a few years ago, 2018 in fact, that the difference between the Minor Premiers and eighth on the ladder was just two premiership points, or one win. One! It’s fair to say that the game, and the difference between the best and the rest, has changed dramatically since then. It took 15 wins to qualify for the Finals that season, while this year you may only need 11, or possibly as few as 10 victories to reach the Finals. In the last 20 seasons, teams have been able to qualify for the playoffs five times with a win ratio of less than 50 per cent. It’s not unheard of to lose more than you win and still sneak into 8th position, but even so, this season is taking that statistical anomaly to almost unheard of levels. So if six spots are already secured, who gets the other two? With five teams locked together on eight
