HELLO... HARI RAYA HAJI
a religious obligation for able-bodied Muslims with the financial means. It is not just a powerful demonstration of the solidarity between Muslim men and women, but also of their complete submission to Allah. Normally, Hari Raya Haji is observed 70 days after Ramadan or the fasting month. Hari Raya Haji is also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice” that commemorates Prophet Abraham/Ibrahim. As the story goes, God asked Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son but placed a sheep under his hand when he was about to use the knife. Abraham trusted God with his son’s life and was
reassured in his belief. Since that day, Muslims all around the world follow the path of Abraham and sacrifice a sheep. In Singapore, male Muslims volunteer at the mosque for

Keep screen at a distance
Ensure that your computer screen is at least 40cm to 75cm away from your eyes. Too far away and you’ll squint to look at the screen. Too near and your eyes would start working harder to focus, causing more strain. Use proper lighting
Prevent glare by reorienting your work-station. Try to position yourself in such a way where the glare from the windows do not irritate your eyes as the light bounces off your computer screen causing eye fatigue.

Eucerin Sun Fluid Mattifying Face SPF 50+ ($37.80 for 50ml) I found this a little too oily for my skin. The formula was thick, yellow and left a shiny film on my face even though it was meant to mattify. However, it does have an excellent broad spectrum protection of UVA and B rays, great for outdoorsy folks. Generally, the higher the SPF of your sunscreen, the stronger protection you have from the sun. I would recommend this sunscreen for days where you know you’ll be out in the sun for extended periods of time. If you’re like me and see the sun for about 15 minutes each day, you don’t really need this sunscreen.

DHC Suncut Q10 Mist SPF 24 ($19.00 for 30ml) This sunscreen is by far the easiest one to use, coming in a convenient spray bottle, the formula is light and was absorbed fairly quickly without leaving an oily residue. It does have a light scent of alcohol though. Spray it liberally onto your body for an all over-coverage. I have issues with sunscreen as they give me pimples but I tried it on my face and to my surprise the formula kept my skin matte and I’ve yet to have a breakout. It blocks ultraviolet rays (UVA and B) and contains moisturising ingredients.
Mervyn Hi and Heist making hair better.
The old-school art of barbering turns cool again at the hands of young upstart Heist
Gentlemen,
start your razors! Barbers are no longer back alley affairs where brusque men trim your nose hairs, clean your ears and shave your face. Taking barbering back to its original roots, main barber of Heist, Mervyn Hi, 24, also known by his pseudonym Muffyn Liuliu, started his trade by clipping manes at the voiddeck of his home. “My mother has banned cutting hair in the house as it’s too much of a mess to clean up. So, whenever my friends needed a haircut, I told them to come to my void-deck. I even had some people ask me if my services were free. I said, they weren’t and they walked away!” Mervyn recalled with a laugh. Thrown together by chance, six others and Mervyn make up the mysterious hybrid ad-agency/barbering Heist Collective. The group had an instant connection and a dream to one day set up a barber shop. At that point in time, he was already free-lancing at U-One Hairdressing and Beauty Salon in Far East Plaza. “I started out cutting my own hair after observing other barbers and watching Youtube videos. I used to call myself an “extreme hairstylist.” But hairstyling is about being skilled with a pair of scissors. Barbers settle everything with just a pair of clippers,” says Mervyn. Apart from haircuts, he also provides hot towel shaves and hair tattooing. “People hear about us through word of mouth and social media. We view barbering as an art form and we’re trying to appear at the appropriate settings. Look out on our Facebook page in early November for our next event as well,” he says. Heist has previously appeared in Books Actually on Yong Siak Street and Home Club for ‘spontaneous’ barbering sessions. The barbering artistry vibe carries over to the hair products they stock ranging from imported brands like For a pdf copy of Weekender visit: www.weekender.com.sg

Beach
Bods Picking the wrong swimwear can be incredibly detrimental to both men and women. Here’s some help on picking the right outfit for your next beach or pool side trip.
If you’re tired of your swimwear bunching up
forming unattractive bulges or accentuating the wrong areas, fret not. With the right type of swimwear, these problems will be banished. Men, you essentially have only three types of suits.
Boardshorts
Swim Trunks/Thong
Easily the most flattering style for all women as the cups and bottoms can be adjusted to size and comfort. However, this is a no-no for a top heavy woman as you require more support, search for thick strapped halter tops instead for a more flattering fit.
The most old-school style of swimwear there is for men. Reveals a lot of leg and crotch, no extra material bunching up anywhere but the risk of a wedgie is very high. There is nothing more unattractive than a beach wedgie. However, having said that, the thong is always a no-no. It shows way too much for comfort. These are all right for sun-tanning but not so much for swimming or any other strenuous activity. Boyshorts
These are the boxer-briefs of swimwear. Providing the coverage of a boardshort but the streamlined silhouette of a pair of trunks, these are great for swimming, tanning and even beach volleyball. The length of these boyshorts usually fall at the upper thigh but slightly longer versions are also available should you want more covered up.
HANSEL 2 Nov – 4 Nov, 11am – 6pm, The Hansel Warehouse Block 1013 Geylang East Avenue 3 #05-156 Singapore 389728
Women have a much more complicated problem where their swimwear has to also make a fashion statement. Feel free to mix and match your tops and bottoms for a fun twist. Skirted bikinis
For ladies who want a little extra curve below, a skirted style gives you more volume while adding a touch of femininity. If you have wide hips, try to avoid this style of bikinis to minimise the “lamp-shade” effect. String Bikinis
Bandeau Bikinis
Boyish figures would love this style as it widens the bodice, creating a curvier silhouette. Boyish figures can also have fun with ruffles and tiers to add an extra oomph to their beach bod. One-piece Swimsuits
Don’t neglect the classic one piece. Instead of the dated swim-styles of the 80s –say no to Baywatchtake this style to the next level by incorporating vintage details, making it a pin-up girl suit. Who says covered up can’t be sexy? W
What a STEAL!
Sun, Sand and Sea

Usually comes with a rigid waistband, a lace up front and velcro fly and falls at the knees. Not the best for doing laps in the pool as there’s too much loose material that inhibits movement. Not to mention the way the inner lining bunches up at all the wrong places. More suited for beach volleyball and surfing than swimming.

“To love others, you need to love yourself first. And one way to do so, is by looking and feeling good in what you wear everyday.” - Berlinda Ong
Love yourself, Love Mi Get affordable yet stylish threads at Singaporean-owned boutique Love Mi. With fashion trends changing as much as a woman changes her mind, the newly opened Love Mi boutique at Star Vista provides statement pieces to make heads turn as you walk down the street. The newest Love Mi store introduces a new design everyday from stylishlooking workwear, gorgeous luxe wear for cocktails and evening dinners to cool basics and dresses for weekends. Since it’s inception in 2011, founder of Love Mi and ex-Japan Airlines airstewardess Berlinda Ong says, “Love Mi is a humble fashion vision of mine. To love others, you need to love yourself first. And one way to do so, is by looking and feeling good in what you wear everyday. Love Mi aims to purport this message of loving oneself through fashion with our quality and stylish
collection at competitive prices.” She added that Love Mi was intentionally spelt with an ‘I’ as it represents oneself. Gracing their opening event last Friday was fashion-guru Lionnel Lim – who has styled stars like Zhang Ziyi and Fann Wong – he mentioned that Love Mi was made for the feminine woman who likes to dress up and he gives this tip to everyone to avoid the biggest faux pas in fashion. “My one tip to everyone asking me for advice is to elongate. Elongate. Elongate. I’ve seen one too many women wearing skirts that are too short for them with the mistaken assumption that it lengthens their legs. Sometimes with the right fit and length, a long maxi skirt can also make you look taller than you really are,” he says. He adds, “A dress is a dress is a dress. But what makes an outfit different is the focal point. Always have one focal point that stands out.” Love Mi carries an affordable range of womenswear to take you from work to cocktail hour for under a three figure sum. The clothes are priced reasonably between $19.00 and $90.00. In celebration of the opening of Love Mi at The Star Vista, from 22 October to 4 November, shoppers will enjoy a 15 percent off the second item (of lower value) purchased in a single receipt. OBBIES
DIY DENIM Times are hard and jeans are pricey. Holly Matthews shows us how to give old denim new style.
Before Sandpapering
After Sandpapering
The Sandpaper Effect
Holding the jeans firmly down with one hand, rub sandpaper along the surface you’d like roughened up. Warning: denim is designed to be a tough fabric so be prepared to work up a sweat before you see any effects. Choosing the right colour and shape of stud to go with your jeans is half the fun
If you’re making shorts
You’ll need:
• A pair of jeans you’re not afraid to lose • Scissors • A marker • An unpicker (for fraying) • Sandpaper (for weathering) • Studs of your choice
Even new jeans come with holes these days, so don’t be afraid to make your own
1. Put the jeans on. Mark a point about 3cm longer than the actual length you’d like the shorts to be, to take into account the material that will be lost in the shredding or hemming process.
Remember to mark the jeans longer than the actual length you’re after
2. Take off the jeans and start cutting! Beginning from the outer side of each leg, cut sloping slightly downwards so that the jeans are longest at the crotch.
Frayed Edges
Using your unpicker, scrape downwards at the cut edges you’d like to fray. Once you manage to tease some strands out, you can experiment with tugging at them to fray in different ways. The more risque can try cutting into the legs of the jeans and fraying them, leaving artful gaps.
Adding Studs
Look for studs that have prongs on either edge, as opposed to those where all the prongs come from the middle. Studding is easy as all you need to do is pierce the stud through the fabric, then flip it onto the other side and push the prongs in. Note that once you’ve used a stud it’s not advisable to remove it and reuse - the prongs may break.
Jeans were $12.90 from Giant Supermarket. Studs were $5 for 40 from Brighton Accessories House, 32 New Market Road #02-1160

Goldmine A stroll in Punggol with a Feng Shui Master suggests that there’s more to the old real estate adage of “location, location, location.” By Tang Li
There is an urban legend that attributes much of Singapore’s prosperity to the careful adherence to feng shui, the ancient Chinese art of geomancy. The story goes that our early urban planners used this art to maximise good fortune for the nation. True or not, many Singaporeans still take this ancient art seriously today and consult feng shui experts before houses are bought. So for the superstitious and the plain curious alike, what is feng shui really about? To find out, the Weekender asked Master Jet Lee of the Way OnNet Group to analyse the area of development in Punggol where newly constructed condominium Heron Bay resides. Here are some of his findings. Reviewing the external landform of Punggol, the coastline (or lagoon) runs in a curvy form along Serangoon Harbour and forms a natural confinement of qi or energy with meandering and peaceful flow of For a pdf copy of Weekender visit: www.weekender.com.sg
water. Master Jet observes that this is indicative of wealth accumulation. Together with the natural barrier over the sea formed by neighbouring islands Pulau Ubin and Pulau Serangoon, it creates a protection to confine and prevent good energy from dispersing, making it an ideal and conducive environment for residential purposes. He also said that the location of the natural water pond implies auspiciousness and wealth performance. So residents of Punggol, if this is anything to go by, you are apparently sitting atop a goldmine with good energy and wealth performance flowing your way. And for those of you who are still doubtful about the benefits of feng shui, visit the surrounding nature park this weekend anyway. You don’t need a master to know that exercise and nature is always a source of good and positive energy.

She admits that it was initially “frightening” to go up against some of the biggest names in swimming. However, experience at international competition changed that and her focus is on her development as a competitive swimmer. She says, “As long as I hit my personal best time, I feel that it is as good as winning a gold medal.” Mylene will be competing in the final leg of the Fina/Arena Swimming World Cup, which will be held at the Singapore Sports School from November 10 to Nov 11. The event will feature some of the biggest names in international swimming like Christian Sprenger, Jessica Hardy and Inge Dekker. When asked about how she feels about competing on the same stage as such international stars, Mylene says, “I’ve been to many international competitions. I’ve realized that it’s not that scary and I’m actually quite honoured to be competing alongside them.” The Fina/Arena event is open to the public, who can
Bags Galore There is no such thing as having too many bags. Go wild with shopping at Love That Bag
Founded in 2009 by bag aficionados, husband and wife duo Mr Adrian and Mrs Angeline Yu set up luxury bag event company, Love That Bag. Love That Bag holds their sales events at prestigious hotels and clubs, where customers can pamper themselves with a new bag while basking in a luxurious environment. They bring in authentic luxury bags from brand names such as Prada and Chanel where they are exhibited in public luxury bag events and ready for sale at up to 75 percent lower than their retail price. Adrian says,“Our Love That Bag Red Authenticity Tag is the Company’s stamp of guarantee, which rules out the possibility of counterfeit goods. All our items are imported directly from the brand names, and this Red Tag guarantees that this bag is bought from our company, and has been authenticated, so customers can buy from us with confidence.” We have heard customers’ stories in which they shared with us how they have been cheated before by untrustworthy online sellers, and we assure them the bags they buy from us are authentic with our red tag,” he adds. The first sale they ever had was a nightmarish one as they were unprepared for massive crowds, which amidst the chaos, had stolen 30 bags from the event. “People were pounding on the door, the police and civil defense were called…for a whole month after that event, I woke up in my sleep screaming “Don’t steal my bags!”. It started as a bit of fun – Now Mylene Ong relishes the Honour of Competing with the World’s Best
Mylene Ong has a simple answer to anyone who is looking for the secret of success – to have fun. The 21-year-old student from Auckland University of Technology decided that swimming looked like something fun and so she decided to try it out. That decision to do something has led to a career as a national swimmer that has given her multiple medals in regional competitions as well as a chance to compete on the global stage at the London 2012 Olympics. Family helped to play an important role in getting her career as a swimmer started. Her sister is also a national swimmer and served as an early source of inspiration. She says, “When I was younger, my parents always brought me along to my older sister’s swim training. It always looked like she was having lots of fun in the water so I thought I’d give swimming a try as well. I took up some swimming lessons and I loved it.”

managed to overcome all that to become the company we are today,” recounts Angeline. Since then, Love That Bag has taken many workers into its employ, and the company is making plans to expand into online shopping - under a sister company Luxeholics. “We see the potential in the online market so we’ve plans to progress in that direction. So look out for that!” says Adrian excitedly.

FUNNY Singer Katy Perry and Japanese actress Chiaki Kuriyama count themselves as fans of local clothing label Hansel, and so do we. founder Jo Soh shares with us her thoughts on happiness.
“everyone’s life path is different and only you know what’s right for you.”
W: What do people love most about you? JS: I’m guessing it would be my sense of humour. It’s dry like my breakfast Weet-bix.
Weekender: What food do you eat that makes you happy? JO SOH: Vegetables. I like the thought that no animal had to die because I have to live. Sadly, when I was vegetarian, my body developed an intolerance to certain basic foods that are found in a vegetarian diet and I could no longer continue being vegetarian. I still eat a lot of veggies though! W: Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of? JS: Having the courage to trust my inner voice as I make the decisions that shape my life path. I believe that everyone’s life path is different and only you know what’s right for you. W: Where is your favourite place in Singapore? JS: My home is my sanctum (especially my home studio) and that is where I love to spend most of my time. Home is a breezy three-bedroom HDB flat in Holland Village - all white walls and filled with second-hand furniture.
W: You have a time machine. when and where do you go? JS: I would like to travel back in time to the moment when I was born – this would be Mar 1, 1976 and inside my parents’ bedroom on the residential floor above a factory in MacPherson (I was born at home). I would then like to watch my whole life from that point onwards. It would give me a whole new insight into my psyche! This would be great because I think understanding yourself is key to understanding others too. W: What is so ‘shiok’ about Singapore? JS: I personally LOVE the warm tropical climate I feel completely and utterly comfortable in the heat. I love how we have cheap, unpretentious and good food at all hours of the day. And, I LOVE Singlish – it makes us unique! W: What message would you like to say to all Singaporeans? JS: Deliberately take time out each day to enjoy some quality rest time. Society is made up of people and when the people are less uptight and anxious, Singapore would be a lovelier place.
- jo soh
Jo’s collection reflect the things that make her smile - “A blue sky, bright colours and black and white diagonal stripes.”
W: What makes you smile? JS: So many things make me smile… A blue sky, bright colours, black and white diagonal stripes, children’s toys, my little nieces, Madonna (when I saw her concert earlier this month, I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I cried), Hansel (the dog), my hansel Mandarin Gallery shop, my hansel team, exceeding sales targets, a making a customer feel good in my designs, an Instagramed photo, vintage clothing… W: How do you spend a typical weekend? JS: My weekends are firstly filled with chores – grocery shopping, doing laundry, running errands, etc. The fun things are my yoga sessions, three-hour walks, catching up with friends over meals and my favourite time of all, drawing and painting in my home studio. If there was an award given to The Meanest Parent on Planet Earth, I would probably get it. Last week, Vera was due to visit the zoo with her friends at school. However, she had been disobedient the day before, kicking up a fuss when my godmother picked her up from school. And it didn’t stop at that. After that she refused to nap at her usual time and was still awake two hours later. Come dinnertime, she refused to eat. She had her dinner late as a result, and she only ate when daddy came home! As you can see, she was downright uncooperative…So we took the zoo trip away from her. That morning, when we told her and explained that because of her defiant behaviour, she would not be allowed to
go to the zoo, she wailed like someone had stolen her favourite biscuits and chocolate cake. Her face was all red and scrunched and I could feel a teeny bit of my resolve starting to buckle. Were we being too harsh? We reassured her of our love and we were generous with our hugs but she kept repeating “I want to go”, punctuated only by breathless sobs. I thought daddy was going to buckle too but he stood firm. “I’m sorry, Vera. You’re not going to the zoo today. You will learn and hopefully remember the concept of consequences the hard way – by having something you desire taken away from you. We love you, and it’s precisely because of this love that you have to bear with this.”

“The moment I set eyes on the beautiful sanctuary of Sun Moon Lake, I knew I was in love.” - DARREN
FALLING IN LOVE WITH
SUN MOON LAKE Travel blogger Darren Ng shares with us the poetic sights of the picturesque Sun Moon Lake
Huddled by rims of undulating mountains, the invitation for lyrical
romance hangs thick in the air at Sun Moon Lake. My arrival at Sun Moon Lake coincided with the brink of sunset. By that time, the mountains were painted gold and the shimmering lake waters beckoned invitingly. I could still vividly recall, to this day, how my breath escaped me the moment I encountered its beauty for the very first time... The moment I set eyes on the beautiful sanctuary of Sun Moon Lake, I knew I was in love. Home to several indigenous Taiwanese tribes dominated by the Thao, Sun Moon Lake got its name because its northern precinct resembles the sun while its southern part has the shape of a crescent moon. I stared at the lake’s map for a long time but I saw no shape of sun and moon. Nevertheless, the poetic name is befitting of a place such as this. Getting to Sun Moon Lake As one of Taiwan’s main tourist attractions, Sun Moon Lake is well For a pdf copy of Weekender visit: www.weekender.com.sg
connected. There are coaches leaving every hour from Taichung (Central Taiwan) Railway Station and High Speed Rail (HSR) Station. You can also take a six hour cab ride from Alishan to the lake. SHUEISHE Shueishe is the main drop-off point for all tourists coming to Sun Moon Lake. The small lakeside town has quite a few hotels, restaurants and tourist-friendly businesses crowding a small collection of short streets. Sun Moon Lake Ropeway Cable Car Although this is one of the key attractions, I was ready to give it a miss because I’ve developed an unfounded fear of heights and enclosed spaces. Taking the cable car married aerophobia with claustrophobia but I wasn’t ready to be defeated by unfounded fears so I decided fight them with defiance. The panoramic view was fantastic and made me forget my fears. Loving it at Sun Moon Lake A mere three days definitely wasn’t enough for Sun Moon Lake. Although the villages are small and nightlife is practically non-existent, it was nice to take it slow and just enjoy the lake waters, the picturesque mountains and the feeling that you could touch heaven. At IKYU
Adding to the new hip Tiong Bahru aesthetic is IKYU, a taste of Japan, right in our own backyard.
Muslim food has been heralded for their crispy chickens, spicy sauces and rich coconut milk textures. Here’s a couple of foods you could try over the long weekend. Soup Tulang Soup tulang or bone marrow soup consists of mutton or beef bones stewed in a sweet and spicy red soup of mutton stock, tomatoes, ginger, chillies and spices. The marrow has to be knocked, usually against the table, to loosen the marrow. A straw provided is the used to suck out the bone marrow.

Tiong Bahru has become the new hip spot of late and it is not a surprise that Japanese restaurant Ikyu has set up shop in that exact area. Helmed by ex-Chef de Cuisine of Hide Yamamoto, Takuma Seki, brings his experiences from Japan, USA and France to create a unique East-meets-West vibe in his dishes at Ikyu. Ikyu, which means ‘Take A Break’ in English, aims to be a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city where patrons can look forward to good food and company. Chef Seki says, “My job is to make people happy with my food.” He also makes it a point to migle with customers when he’s not busy in the kitchen. Diners can expect pristine seafood like Wafu Marinated Salmon Carpaccio ($16.50) and a wide variety of sashimi ($15.50 and up) and nigiri ($8.50 and up). Fans of the style of Omakase ($128.00) – the chef creates dishes from the day’s ingredients – can enjoy a seven course meal and savour the freshness of the day’s catch. Beef connoisseurs would also enjoy this place for the charcoal-grilled Kagoshima Wagyu beef sirloin ($68.50 for 120g) with homemade ponzu sauce of yuzu, soy sauce, bonito and shitake mushrooms.
Hari Raya Haji is at our doorstep so make use the long weekend to explore the different kinds of Muslim food available on our shores.
Nasi Ulam Known as kampung salad, Nasi Ulam is an Asian style salad. Unlike western salads with European style dressings like vinaigrette, Nasi Ulam is eaten with sambal and raw vegetables with freshly cooked rice. The vegetables are usually par cooked by the heat of the rice to retain the crispiness of the raw vegetables. Putu Piring Putu Piring is a type of round, steamed rice cake with a centre of melted palm sugar. Made of ground rice flour, they are shaped into circular mounds with a spoonful of gula melaka with a pandan leaf pressed in the middle. When bitten, the melted sugar filling oozes out.

Even the happy hour at Ikyu is carefully thought out to suit a Japanese theme. From 5.30pm to 7.30pm daily, Japanese tapas such as Takoyaki and Karage Chicken ($5.50 each) are served as a light bar snack with Japanese beers –Asahi or Sapporo – being sold in a bucket of five ($33.00). With Hari Raya Haji coming up this weekend, here’s a recipe for the popular peppery mutton soup loved by Singaporeans islandwide.
INGREDIENTS 750g of mutton ribs 2 large onions, chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 green chilis, sliced 1 heaped teaspoon grated blue ginger 2 teaspoons black peppercorns 3 teaspoons coriander seeds 9 cups of water 1 tablespoon of oil 4 black cardamoms, lightly crushed
5cm stick of cinnamon 2-3 cloves 2.5cm fresh ginger, grated 3 tablespoons mild curry powder or paste 2 heaped tablespoons grounded white poppy seeds 1/2 cup coconut milk Salt and pepper, to taste Dry fried onions Spring onion, chopped Fresh coriander leaves
Epok Epok An evolution of the British Cornish pasty, the deepfried epok epok is traditionally filled with curried potatoes or sardines. The epok epok is differs from the curry puff slightly due to its layered pastry and spice blend. Keria The ethnic Malay version of the western donut. Made out of mashed sweet potatoes and dipped in syrup, this deep-fried sweet treat is slightly drier and denser than the soft donuts. The kueh keria is also much sweeter. METHOD • Chop mutton bones and place inside a large saucepan with the onion, garlic, chili, blue ginger, peppercorns and coriander. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Turn heat down and let the broth simmer for 3 hours. Skim off the soup scum as it rises. • Strain the soup, reserving the liquid and meat. When it is cool, scrape meat from bones and flake into smaller pieces. • Heat oil in a saucepan and fry the cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and ginger for one minute, and then add the curry paste or powder and cook for 4 minutes. Pour in the grounded poppyseeds and coconut milk. Add in the extra stock. Stir well and season with salt and pepper. • Add meat and boil for 20 minutes. Garnish with fried onions, spring onions and coriander leaves. • Serve your delicious mutton soup. Recipe taken from: www.kuali.com
It is a messy affair of de-shelling, digging and sucking when eating these hairy crabs. But all of it is worth it, just to get to the rich plentiful crab roe. Entering the Paradise Pavilion at the Marina Bay Link Mall is quite an experience as you’ll walk pass the kitchen with large wood-fired ovens for roasted duck which looked succulent but, I was here for another reason altogether, the hairy crabs. Also known as the Chinese Mitten Crab, these small crustaceans are oozing with roe the moment they come out from the steamer. Paradise Pavilion has made good use of their supply by utilising the roe in dishes such as their Xiao Long Bao with Hairy Crab Roe ($10.00) and their Japanese Vermicelli Soup Topped with Hairy Crab Roe ($12.00). Eating the crab itself is an art-form on its own, with

a systematic way of de-shelling. A skilled waitress will guide you through the process. But the thorough way she leaves no flesh un-shelled, is almost impossible on your own, ask her for some help to avoid wastage. The Steamed Shanghai Hairy Crab ($68.00) was leaking with roe when it arrived at the table. Peel open the top shell and a mass of yellow greets you, that’s your cue to grab a spoon to dig in. Hairy crab roe tastes like a cross between a salted duck egg and crab roe. A little salty and you can actually feel the sandy texture of the egg yolk. We had the male crabs at that sitting and it was filled with roe. I can only imagine the amount of roe a female hairy crab would have. My dining companion tried crabs for the first time in his life due to a longtime seafood allergy in his youth that prevented him from doing so. He relished every single piece of crab, legs, pincers and all. His verdict on the hairy crabs? “Yummilicious!” The non-hairy crab dishes such as the Sautéed Prawns with “Dragon Well” Tea Leaves ($28.00) is also worth a mention with the succulent fresh shrimp and the tea leaves complimented each other well which is a nice pause from all that roe. Paradise Pavilion also offers Baked Salt Hairy Crab ($68.00) and Steamed Edamame Tofu with Hairy Crab Roe ($12.00). The hairy crabs season lasts from Oct 1 to Nov 30. You can also find hairy crabs at Goodwood Park Hotel’s Min Jiang and at The Cathay Restaurant. Paradise Pavilion is located at Marina bay Link Mall, 8A Marina Boulevard, #02-01, Singapore 018982.

priced dining experience. I can’t remember the last time I went to a new restaurant and enjoyed every single dish, but Coriander came very close. We began with the Caesar Salad with Grilled Tiger Prawns ($8.80), which had just the right amount of home-made dressing topped with fresh, deliciously smokey prawns in their shells. Next were the New Zealand Mussels in White Wine Sauce ($9.80), which – despite being under appetizers - came with a generous portion of mussels and bread and was almost a meal in itself. The Thai-style Coriander’s Chicken Wings ($7.80) were also a winner, and we had a hard time stopping ourselves from ordering a second portion. On to mains, where both the Pink Cream Crab Meat Pasta ($17.80) and Carbonara ($15.80) scored well on our taste test. Though we didn’t have room for it on this visit, my mum swears by the Country-Style Beef Stew ($14.80), and apparently went back the next night to get her fix. For dessert, the Oreo Oreo ($6.80) cheesecake was satisfactory, but couldn’t match the great dishes that had come before. Still, I will definitely be returning to Coriander, where the friendly service and yummy dishes made for an easy night out.
Open since September this year, Coriander is a new restaurant on the busy Katong stretch that offers ThaiItalian fusion cuisine, with most dishes infused with a generous dose of – you guessed it – coriander.
