How did you prepare for your role as a jilted fiancé in Judgment Day? I always get the question, "When are you going to act in a serious role?" and that does frustrate me a bit! Hahaha. I've been doing that, especially on stage, ever since I started acting. So, yes, this role is more of a dramatic one. The story really makes you think about mortality, the importance of memories and the idea of karma. It made me think of how one should set aside technology and materialism, and concentrate on human relationships (though I do love my dogs too). Which has been your favourite role to play thus far? I thoroughly enjoy playing Pornsak Sukhumvit from The Noose. I love his naiveté and his "boh

Do you prefer playing dramatic roles or comedic ones? I think in Singapore, actors are in such a wonderful situation where they can dip their toes in both styles of performance. And I treasure the opportunities I get to stretch myself in different directions with every project. Variety is the spice of life! What is your most memorable moment on the job? I think I'm very lucky to have a rather unusual job that requires me to do some pretty crazy things. I get paid to go on roller coasters and hotair balloons, eat some great food, travel to far away destinations and interview some very famous people, like The Rock and Paula Abdul. But one of the most memorable moments that happened recently was also a rather scary one! What happened? We were filming Judgment Day in the outskirts of Phnom Penh. I was riding pillion on a motorcycle along with a third passenger and a basket of chickens. The rider accelerated too quickly and the front wheel of the bike lost contact with the ground and did a backwards flip. I swear I saw my life flash past me! The guy behind me departed the bike unceremoniously and ended up on his back, along with the chickens. The rider held on for his dear life and ended up under the bike. I, for some strange reason, ninja-ed off the back and ended up in a taekwondo-do stance. We were all very lucky that no one was injured. Even the chickens. The bike could've landed on anyone of us and if there were more cars/bikes/lorries on the road, we would've been prata. We were all very lucky!

liao-ness". The Thai accent is a challenge and was really tough to learn but I do love the Thai culture very much. It is so rich.
What do you do on a typical weekend? I enjoy going out and having a few drinks if I don't have to work the next day. I'm quite the night owl. I naturally exist in a time zone that is different to the one I'm living in! I stay up late, which means I sleep in quite a bit too. If there ever is a Sunday free, I try my best to make it to a champagne brunch. There's nothing quite like indulging in oysters, a cheese platter and copious amounts of champers. And then it's Monday again! Argh! What would you like to say to all Singaporeans? You continue to inspire me. We live in such a melting pot of cultures. Let's be proud of that! By the way, your driving skills are not very good. Hehehe. W
It’s Judgment Day Featuring an ensemble of local actors, Judgment Day promises laughter, tears and the ultimate resolution of living each day like it is your last
actor Chua En Lai is known for his versatility and comedic timing. We speak with him regarding his ‘serious’ role in movie Judgment Day
Executive produced by Mark Lee, Judgment Day’s cast includes popular names such as Henry Thia, Chua En Lai, Rebecca Lim, Guo Liang, Edwin Goh, Sebastian Tan, Wang Yuqing and the late John Cheng, better known as Ah Nan. The film also features two popular Taiwanese actors: Tender Huang of Taiwanese drama Time Story and Alice Ko of the movie, Monga. Judgment Day revolves around characters from all walks of life. They decide to share their deepest, darkest secrets based on the belief that doomsday will occur in the next 72 hours. A married man confesses his want for a sex-change, a wife reveals she is in love with her boss, and a young lady runs away to Cambodia and breaks up with her fiancé. When the day of reckoning doesn’t arrive, for those who made irreversible choices, it is the end of the world as they know it.

FASHION Who, me? No, YouYou
Fash Snips
New kid on the block, fashion label YouYou shares its sentiments and ideas of womenswear By Cheryl Chia
All these pieces are from the Clean Slate Spring Collection by YouYou
The Singaporean fashion scene is getting much more recognition than it did just a mere two or three years ago with labels such as Ashley Isham and Depression making waves abroad, creating a platform for young budding designers to test the waters. Womenswear brand YouYou, is one of them. Created by Jacqueline Teo and Yuan Zhiying late last year, the brand officially launched early this year. “We named it YouYou as it represents the both of us. The Chinese character is ‘shuang’ which means pair. We tried many permutations and translations but all of them were just horrible. So, we decided to play on the character itself which comprises two ‘you’s,” says Zhiying. The girls met when they began working for Singaporean designer Max Tan. YouYou’s womenswear shows off a “quiet sophistication” that suits their purported clientele of PMEBs and working women. Their Spring capsule collection entitled Clean Slate, shows off structural details such as exposed darts and sharp colours like vermillion orange, black, navy and silver grey. “On the rack, it looks very clean and easy whereas in our catalogue, the clothes look very edgy. This is to show the versatility of the pieces,” says Jacqueline, who handles most of the production. Their range comprises updated contemporary style such as an orange flap-back dress – a simple A-line dress with a slash back and a black knot dress with an asymmetrical hemline. Their clothes are affordably priced at $59 to $159 as
compared to other local brands. “There is an impression that local brands are expensive, thus we want YouYou to be accessible to everyone, so we try to keep the prices reasonable,” explains Jacqueline. The duo does a capsule collection per season as opposed to a full-fledged collection. Their Summer collection, E(merge) plays on concealed and furnishing details such as vanishing collars in bright shades of green, yellow atop of the basic blacks and navies. It will hit stores early to mid-May. YouYou is sold at Isetan Scotts, Threadbare & Squirrel and Egg3. You can also arrange an appointment at their showroom/ studio at Macpherson Road. MOVIE PREVIEW
I Give It
A Year A brand new comedy from the writer of Borat and Bruno lifts the veil on the realities of the first year of marriage
S
ince they met at a party, ambitious high-flyer Nat and struggling novelist Josh have been deliriously happy despite their differences. Josh is a thinker and Nat’s a doer but the spark between them is undeniable. Josh and Nat’s wedding is a dream come true, but no one — family, friends and even their minister — is convinced that they will last. About the Film I Give It A Year is written and directed by Dan Mazer, infamous for the films Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and Bruno. It is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner (Love Actually and Atonement), and Kris Thykier (Stardust). The film stars Rose Byrne (of Bridesmaids), Rafe Spall, Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Minnie Driver and Jason Flemyng.
The Director’s Cue Filmmaker Dan Mazer had a very specific idea for his debut as a feature film director. He had already been enjoying an iconoclastic career, working with Sacha Baron Cohen as a writer and producer on Da Ali G Show, Ali G Indahouse, Borat and Bruno. With a career in comedy, Mazer decided he would work his humour around romance, though he had no interest in writing and directing a traditional romantic comedy. Non-Traditional Rom-Com “I thought that it would be funny to write a comedy where instead of a couple getting together, with all the stereotypical things we have come to understand about that particular genre and trope, you subvert that and do a similar thing about a couple that you want to split up,” says Mazer. He adds, “If you are sitting with your mates at a pub, their stories about splitting up with their girlfriends, their stories about breaking up, stories about arguments and about things going wrong, they are much funnier than, ‘She was amazing, we met, wasn’t it adorable.’” Still, he was determined that it would remain a “feel-good comedy”. Comedy In Relationships Producer Kris Thykier says that I Give It A Year picks up where most romantic comedies end. “This story has a real modernity to it, and it is a comedy that happens to be based around relationships rather than being something in the vein of where romantic comedy has ended up now,” says Thykier “We have all been in a relationship with someone who isn’t a bad person but isn’t the right person. This film is about two people who rush into a relationship,” he adds. Truth Stranger than Fiction Mazer turned to his own life, and that of his friends, for the story. He says, “I am very happily married and I love my wife inordinately, but we obviously have funny arguments and tricky times and early on in the script there is a row that my wife and I had and I wrote down verbatim, but when people read the script, they said, ‘Well, that is not believable, people would never say that.’ So I had to dilute some of the reality of my life!” I Give It A Year, a rom-com with a difference, opens on Apr 11. Dine on works of art Newly opened at the Quayside Isle in Sentosa Cove, Museo serves up fusion food with an artistic twist
The private dining room in Museo
Quayside Isle may be a bit of a hassle to get to for those who do not drive but why not head there to escape the throng of crowds over the weekend? You can even take a nice stroll down the jetty once you’re done stuffing yourself at the restaurants there. So far, restaurants such as Picotin, Brussel Sprouts and Ezoca have joined in the fray alongside the boats. Museo, located a floor above Picotin, is a cosy place to chill out over the weekend. Museo – pronounced mu-zay-oh – is Italian for museum, and they try to showcase each course as an art piece. The fusion menu serves dishes such as the Mezzanine Signature ($38 or $39) with a set of four small bites pre-selected or customised according to your taste. We tried the customised set comprising, the Joys of Life – roasted pork belly with hot sauce, Smile of Mona Lisa – deepfried camembert, Flaming June – salmon curry, and the Three Musicians – soft shell crabs with tomato-chilli sauce. The deep-fried camembert came with a shot glass of cranberry sauce which complemented each other perfectly. This is great as a bar snack should you just be hankering for a bite. The pork belly was smoky and crispy. It was certainly a decadent selection to share as well. The entrees boasted dishes such as Sliced Beef with Mushroom “Zurich-style” with pan-roasted rosti potato ($28). We were slightly disappointed by this one as the sauce was too thick, resulting in us feeling a bit sick, and the potato was a tad too dry. Perhaps it had been sitting around for a bit. We especially liked the Autumn Sweater ($20) – Nikka whiskey, maple and apricot syrup and fresh lemon juice. The drink even comes with a spherical ice cube within. Try their Cucumber Mojito ($16) for a cooling and refreshing drink as well. Finish your meal with one of their desserts such as the Green Tea Crème Brulee ($12) or the Vodka Chocolate Lava Cake ($12), both of which come with a side of gelato of your choice. New menu for beloved PizzaBar Da Paolo PizzaBar, the popular haunt for those who love thin-crust pizzas, has just launched a new menu with more refreshing salads, hearty pizzas, and more
The new and improved Berry Merry salad
The new Carbonara pizza crowned with a whole egg
Along the quiet and peaceful street of Jalan Merah Saga in the enclave of Holland Village, Da Paolo PizzaBar is a popular dining establishment and hangout for those who love thin-crust pizzas and authentic Italian food with a modern twist. Now, this familiar favourite has introduced fresh ideas into the menu, so patrons have a greater choice from PizzaBar’s broad selection of specialty salads and pizzas. Fresh Ideas and Tastes Keeping to its tenet of giving patrons fresh produce-driven dishes, Da Paolo PizzaBar’s new dishes are inventive while retaining the classic and robust flavours of Italian cuisine. The newcomers to the already extensive list of salads are four hearty and refreshing salads that are perfect for the health-conscious diner. The fusion-sounding Caulimame ($20) is a novel mix of raw cauliflower florets, edamame, baby green peas and mushrooms dressed with a light tomato water vinaigrette for a delightful subtle tang, while the Crabby Pasta ($20) is PizzaBar’s salad rendition of the classic aglio olio with farfalle pasta, shredded crab meat, sundried tomatoes and rucola tossed in garlic oil. A meatier – and cuter – salad option is the Cowpaccio ($20), comprising paper-thin and flavourful wagyu beef slices on a bed of rucola, Asiago cheese and shallots dressing. Presented in a crepe bowl, the new and improved Berry Merry ($20) filled with walnuts, berries, figs and field greens is paired perfectly with gorgonzola cheese sauce and raspberry vinaigrette. Every one of these provides a unique and intriguing taste experience. New Thin-Crust Pizzas Still, the favourites are the signature thin-crust pizzas. Da Paolo PizzaBar’s new inventions include the Carbonara Pizza ($32), a lipsmacking garlic cream base pizza with bacon and caramelised onions, crowned with a whole egg. Seafood lovers will enjoy the Portofina Pizza ($32) with a luscious lobster cream sauce, chunks of crayfish, and mozzarella balanced with

f you find that the dishes on the menu at J’s call to mind the rolling plains, lush mountains and passionate people of the Americas, you should not be surprised. The menu at J’s was originally inspired by owner and Managing Director Joy Mabhubani’s life and experiences in the far off continent. Joy has lived in Hong Kong, Jakarta and Central America. It was her experiences in Central America that inspired her cuisine. She has since been in Singapore for about ten years. Even the The story behind J’s is also Burrito looks unusual and interesting. Joy mouth-watering says it all started with wanting to purchase a drum set. She had gone down to El Toro, that was closing, at Winsland House. When she saw the restaurant, she decided that it was an opportunity not to be missed and purchased it. Joy is actually a banker by training. “I have always had the idea of feeding people,” Joy explains. “I am grateful for wonderful people working with me, who make this possible,” she adds. The food at J’s caters to a broad variety of patrons with different dietary preferences, as it contains no pork, lard, alcohol or crustacean. Joy says that this was inspired by her experiences, including with friends who found it difficult to eat together due to their dietary requirements and the menus of the restaurants. “I just felt that if we keep it simple, everyone can share a meal together,” she explains. sweet and juicy tomatoes, as well as the Mad Black Pizza ($32) with an aromatic squid ink base sauce and studded with succulent shelled prawns, chorizo and wild rocket leaves. The Mad Black was certainly interesting in appearance as well as to the tongue. Sweet Endings For a sweet finish, diners can indulge in the Minced Berry Pie ($14) with a buttery pastry shell and a raspberry and blueberry-filling served with vanilla gelato and raspberry sauce. Other new sweet treats also include the Honey Ricotta Pear Tart ($15), Lemon Curd Pavlova ($14), the mouth-watering Valrhona Chocolate Lava Cake ($14) and the PizzaBar Sundae Supreme ($12), which consists of homemade vanilla and chocolate gelato. Any of these will cap your perfect meal. New Weekend Brunch Favourites Brunch lovers can look forward to a comforting spread of breakfast items on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 9am and 1pm. Tuck into Pumpkin Pancakes ($16), a mouth-watering stack of three fluffy pancakes made with pumpkin puree and best enjoyed with the homemade honey ricotta dip and maple syrup, and Chicken First ($20), a hearty creation that presents a baked crepe bowl brimming with a creamy mix of spinach, chicken breast, mushrooms and cream cheese topped with a choice of poached or sunny-side up egg. Other highlights on the brunch menu are Papa’s Benedict ($18), PizzaBar’s rendition of a breakfast classic with Parma ham, poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce served on crispy baked potato skins instead of bread, and Royale Stack ($19) – a flavour-packed combination of smoked salmon, homemade hash brown stack, cherry tomatoes and avocado crowned with a poached egg. Häagen-Dazs has recently launched its newest flavour, Salted Caramel, adding yet another tantalising flavour to its stable of over 65 flavours of premium ice creams and sorbets. Häagen-Dazs has also partnered specialty cocktail bars in Singapore and invited their award-winning mixologists to create cocktails incorporating the new flavour. Specially made from the finest ingredients, this ice cream flavour is made up of a delicious caramel ice cream with silky ribbons of salted caramel and delicate brittle. We tried the new Salted Caramel ice cream and the sweetness of the caramel blended well into the savoury taste without
one overpowering the other. The brittle – a candy made from nuts and set, melted sugar - was crunchy, adding texture to this delightful confection. The sweetness level was just right – not cloying like your typical caramel ice cream. It was not overly salty either. It is perfect as a cool dessert on a hot afternoon. Häagen-Dazs Salted Caramel is available for a limited time in 4 × 100ml packs of Caramel Attractions Minicup Multipack, alongside Vanilla Caramel Brownie (100 ml), Caramel Biscuit & Cream (100ml) and Dulce de Leche (100ml), at $17.90. Häagen-Dazs Salted Caramel will also be available in 500ml pints, at $14.50. Grab a pint to satisfy your taste buds today.

lively flavours. One example is the Poppers ($15), breaded jalapeno peppers stuffed with mozzarella. These are invigorating and add some spice into your life. Those who have tried these before may feel that they could somehow be better though. Nonetheless, one of my favourite dishes at J’s was the Scrambled Eggs with Salmon on Toast. From my personal experience, “fusion” is usually a bad word. This would be a strong exception. Flavourful and rich in taste, this is not what you would expect with scrambled eggs on toast. In fact, its name, while accurate, doesn’t quite seem to do justice to its taste. The Chipotle Meatballs ($16) are also one of the best items on the menu at J’s. These are essentially braised beef meatballs in spicy chipotle and tomato sauce, served with crispy corn tortillas. While these delicious meatballs were prepared in a more Latin American style, they were very similar to the fragrant and wholesome taste of Italian meatballs. If the taste of life’s richness, pleasures and passion could be encapsulated within a meatball, this would probably be it. The Quesadillas ($22), tortillas filled with chicken breast or minced beef, and cheese, onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno and guacamole, were good and filling.
The Lychee Espuma
The “Adobo” Chicken ($28), braised chicken slow-cooked in marinade “Adobo” style, is undoubtedly the highlight of the menu. This concoction was nothing short of ambrosial. Served with warm tortillas, it is a main course that’s sure to please your tongue and your tummy. To help you wash down the food and even revitalise you, J’s sodas ($8) are truly refreshing. Try the Pineapple, Green Apple or Mango Lemonade. If you prefer a mocktail ($8), the Cuban Mint or Puerto Rican Colada are other refreshing options. J’s has some interesting desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth as well. The Bocas Negras ($12) is a flourless chocolate with a triple-chocolate gelato. The fudge in the chocolate cake is thick and rich, while the gelato is as good as Haagen Dazs’ Belgian Chocolate but not as creamy and sinful. The Bread and Butter Pudding ($10), while simple-sounding, is also sweet and satisfying. However, it is a bit heavy as a dessert and should be shared. J’s has recently received its Halal-certification. Joy says there are not many mid-range Halal restaurants and this makes J’s a great dining option. Whatever your dietary preference, you are likely to find something at J’s that will please. Head down to taste the passion and joy of living. W
When you are living far from home, a familiar sight, even a fast food outlet, is always welcome. Jollibee is to the Filipinos what McDonald’s is to the Americans living abroad. Serving up their own brand of fried chicken, burgers and spaghetti, Jollibee has seen snaking queues since its opening on Mar 12. Jollibee Foods Corporation Chairman and Founder Tony Tan Caktiong says, “We are delighted to bring Jollibee and its world-class delicious food offerings to Singapore as we believe that our food will appeal to the good taste of Singaporeans.” The menu may be slightly smaller than the offerings in their 35-year-old chain in the Philippines but it is enough for more than a taste. By Lester J Wan Last Thursday, Catalunya Singapore hosted an afternoon with Chef Ferran Adria of elBulli, the world-famous three Michelin star restaurant near Barcelona, Spain. In an intimate conference with an exclusive group of gastronomy media, Adria unveiled his upcoming plans and that of his new project, The elBulli Foundation. According to Catalunya, this was the first press unveiling in Asia. “Before, elBulli was a restaurant. Now, it is something completely different,” says Adria. The elBulli Foundation A two-pronged project, the elBulli Foundation will first launch later this year with an expansion of elBulli’s original restaurant premises in Roses, Barcelona. Around 2015, the elBulli Foundation will reveal Bullipedia, an extensive online internet resource for all to use. Signature dishes such as the Jollibee Chickenjoy, Yumburger, Spaghetti, Jolly Hotdog and Burger Steak are all available. The Chickenjoy ($2.80 to $6.60) features two golden-fried crispy pieces of chicken with white rice and brown sauce. The Yumburger ($4.40 to $6.60) comes in three options with 100 per cent beef single or double patties, and with or without cheese. The meals come with standard sides of French fries and a cup of fountain soda. What sets Jollibee apart from the other existing fast food chains is the spaghetti. The Jollibee Spaghetti ($3 to $4) has a sweet tomato-based sauce with sausage, ham and ground beef, with copious amounts of cheese.
to learn and experience the creativity of elBulli. The new building is poised to be modern as well as ecological, to reflect the organic and artistic principles of elBulli. This unique structure will house every element of the elBulli chronological history, demonstrating the entire evolution of its culinary journey. It will be a permanent space to keep an archive of elBulli’s past, yet be a playground to further experiment with creative culinary processes. The architecture will include an “idearium”, an audio-visual room, an exhibition space for permanent and temporary galleries, a pop-up restaurant, as well as a multi-disciplinary space. Further plans will be revealed in the future.
Bullipedia For the first time in Asia it was announced that, to keep up with the constantly-changing times even in the culinary world, the elBulli foundation will see the inauguration of a revolutionary and exceptional online tool for all – Bullipedia. Bullipedia will be an in-depth online archive of a new culinary classification and organisation (including ingredients, elaborations, concepts and techniques). This application, with a search engine tool, will allow users to access curated culinary information and explore their own ideas while learning, and challenge and inspire other users. Adria says that this will be the first such concept and online tool for top level western gastronomy. He estimates that there will be more than tens of thousands of new dishes added to this online encyclopaedia and database, per year. “It’s crazy, I know. But we are going to be crazy with this,” smiles Adria. “I know it is a big challenge. But if you have no passion, you have no life," he adds. Ferran Adria – The Man Renowned for relentless pursuit of culinary creativity and excellence, Adria was head chef and innovator of elBulli. He brought elBulli from one Michelin Star to three Michelin Stars in a short span of time, being named World’s Best Restaurant five times. Adria is also founder of the techno-emotional food movement where the focus is not only to give diners an experience with the palate but with all five senses. He says, “elBulli is not a restaurant. It is the edge of gastronomy.” Catalunya, 82 Collyer Quay, Singapore 049327

Mexicans have been eating Nopal cactus for centuries. We take a look at the various health benefits of this food 3 × 30 tablets for $40. Each tablet contains 600mg of Nopal cladode powder and you just have to pop one tablet in before each meal. Nopal Cactus can be taken on its own, or added to salads with Panela cheese, if you prefer. according to the health authorities here, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity are among the top three most common ailments that plague people in developed countries such as in Singapore today. Singapore is a food paradise, especially as a multicultural melting pot. With char kway teow, mutton biryani, nasi lemak and the like, one has to watch his or her expanding waistline and other aspects of health, too. Now, there comes a new type of food in the market that can help Singaporeans maintain their good health and remove unhealthy bodily issues. What is Nopal Cactus? This is where Nopal Cactus comes in handy. Nopal Cactus is a type of plant from the family Cactaceae. It provides many health benefits, such as in aiding digestion, healthy bowel movement, colon cleansing and detox, and even natural weight management. On top of that, it reduces post-meal blood sugar levels and regulates and normalises cholesterol levels, so that you can worry less about the occasional indulgences such as sweet desserts. What happens is that the fibre and pectin in Nopal Cactus decreases the absorption of sugar in the stomach, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Furthermore, a medical study’s findings have indicated that the livers of patients with high blood cholesterol levels could regulate LDL cholesterol, or ‘bad’ cholesterol, significantly better by eating this “prickly pear” cactus. Taking Nopal Now, you can take Bodigard Nopal Cactus in a fussfree way as it comes conveniently in a tablet form, after being launched by MyLustre last year. Made in America by an FDA-certified cGMP factory under the license by MyLustre Pte Ltd, it comes in a bottle of 30 tablets for an affordable $18, or a trio pack of

How to encourage
your child’s musical interest

About Celine Celine’s passion for piano began when she was seven, winning local and regional music awards in her childhood. She has performed alongside jazz vocalist Lady Rebecca in Osaka, Japan. She now handles business development, retail and institutional accounts locally, in Brunei, Philippines, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. She is also involved in training staff, marketing events, collaborating with associates and relationship building. Steinway Gallery Singapore recently launched the “I ♥ to Rent” scheme to allow parents to rent a piano for two years, after which they can return or buy it – this is ideal for expats or parents who might be uncertain of their children’s musical interest.
Thinking of starting your child on music? Wondering when is too early or too late? Here are some pointers. Starting out Start your child off by allowing him or her to listen to music. Nurturing this musical influence is the most important aspect before deciding on the instrument or when to take up formal lessons, says Ms Celine Goh, general manager of Steinway Gallery Singapore. Steinway Gallery Singapore is the exclusive dealer of Steinway & Sons pianos. Its team is trained to match music lovers with pianos perfect for them. Whether to pick up music hinges on interest, aptitude, discipline, concentration, time and effort. Children normally start lessons at seven years old, when their muscles are more developed, and music classes before that merely teach rhythm. encouragement Parents can influence their children’s readiness by playing music, or introducing music into their lives by relating the sounds in nature to pieces of music. Doing so helps children relate to music, and find it an expression of what they see and feel. Tone changes, chord changes or
Steinway Gallery Singapore helps match music lovers with pianos perfect for them
putting lyrics to music also become interesting to them. Words of encouragement and little rewards such as stickers on pieces that they played well can also help foster a child’s interest. “Children see parents as their most important audience,” Celine says, so parents should be patient in listening to their children play, and encourage them to participate in recitals. Other pointers Expose your child to different genres of music such as jazz and experiences such as musicals or Sunday concerts in the Botanic Gardens.
This broadens their horizons, and gives them an overview of music beyond the scales. “Music is not about playing piece after piece, or examinations,” Celine says emphatically. Her advice is to stop lessons if they do not want to continue, since it is an interest in music that motivates children to practise. Even then, music can still be part of their lives – it may rekindle their interest after say, a Jay Chou concert, and they might want to pick up music again. Maths can be fun We speak to Dr Carol Cheong, franchisor of American enrichment centre Math Monkey, on how to get kids interested in the subject By Cheryl Chia their homework promptly. We reward the winning team or child at the end. We’ve introduced the elements of competition and incentives to create the motivation. Learning maths can be fun through activity
Learning mathematics through fun and games is possible with the right method. Math Monkey uses the Vedic method, an ancient form of mental mathematics from India, which allows children to simplify a maths problem to a level they can master. Dr Carol Cheong of Math Monkey shares how. Why do children feel Maths is a tough subject? No child hates maths from birth. They hate it because of the teaching approach. The traditional approach to learning maths is dull, boring and puts the child through numerous and repetitive worksheet practices that kill their interest in the subject right from the start. How would you get a child interested in maths? We know children like to play and we let the children play games as they learn. In order to play, children must be able to answer the maths questions and in order to answer the questions, they need to pay attention to the teacher during lessons and do
How did you decide to start Math Monkey? I was tired of the corporate life so I became an “edupreneur”. I did my research and found that Math Monkey is unique in that they make maths fun for kids. I love mathematics myself and find it disappointing that a lot of kids hate maths, so I decided to help kids (re)discover the joy of maths. How do kids respond to Math Monkey? Our kids love the Math Monkey sessions. We’ve also received feedback from parents that their child always looks forward to attending. We have parents telling us that their children look forward to doing their homework now. When they develop a positive attitude, they are more likely (or willing) to pay attention and to focus better.
What can parents do to help pique their children's interest in Maths? Do not put too much emphasis on results and outcome. When a child enjoys the process, learning will naturally occur and results will follow. Get a child to see how maths is useful by applying maths to everyday life. At what age should parents start honing their child's analytical skills? Children learn best between the ages of three to seven (the “Golden Age” of learning) as the brain is still growing. It’s critical to inculcate the right learning habits at this age. Start early, plan ahead and let your child experience the joy of learning so as to reap long term benefits. mega-3 fatty acids are necessary for health but are not produced by the body; they are naturally-found in oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, herring and trout. Among other benefits, they support healthy heart function, and general growth and development. Holland & Barrett Fish Oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids - made up of EPA and DHA, for which low levels have been associated with depression. 60 per cent of our brain is made up of fats, and Omega-3 is crucial for brain function, and helps improve concentration and memory. Fish oil offers a gamut of health benefits, such as assisting in joint care, and improving health in the heart, eyes, skin, and mind. Fish oil promotes heart health in several ways. First of all, it may help with high blood pressure and promote healthy blood circulation. Secondly, it reduces blood triglyceride levels, and helps prevent hardening of arteries, which may help prevent

artherosclerosis. Thirdly, it reduces plaque build-up and blood clots in arteries that lead to the brain. Last but not least, the DHA and EPA levels help lower the levels of triglycerides and elevate HDL (good cholesterol) levels. For those with arthritis, its anti-inflammatory properties help control joint ache by reducing joint tenderness and stiffness, and for those with skin problems, it alleviates symptoms related to skin disorders such as acne and eczema. If contact lenses leave your eyes feeling dry, consider taking fish oil as it helps protect the eyes from dry-eye syndrome, and decreases the risk of developing high eye
pressure, which may cause eye pain and lead to a loss of vision. At the same time, you can maintain and improve your mental health as it insulates nerve cells in the brain, allowing these nerve cells to better communicate with one another. People who are deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids may suffer from depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and ADHD. Promoting a healthy digestive system is another of its health benefits, as it can improve bowel health by reducing the inflammation of the bowels. It also maintains strong bones as it increases the body’s calcium levels, reducing the incidence of bone loss. For ladies, it improves

menstrual health by reducing the pain associated with PMS and menstruation. Asthma sufferers may find respite, as it improves lung health by reducing inflammation that occurs in lung diseases. It may also help prevent cancer, as a low intake of Omega-3 is correlated with colon, breast, and prostate cancers. Fish oil supplements are molecularly distilled to remove mercury, heavy metals, PCB, and dioxins, so you can increase Omega-3 intake without eating large amounts of fish and worrying about a high intake of heavy metals. With this host of benefits, it is highly advisable to include fish oil in your diet. Scientifically formulated in an antioxidant matrix to enhance potency, Ester Omega provides

When it comes to Asia, Japan is in a league of its own with its unique culture and food By Cheryl Chia

he Japanese are in a league of their own when it comes to precision, punctuality and quality, with their schedules running like a well-oiled machine. Evidently, politeness is also de rigueur. Being a first-time visitor to Japan, the country is indeed eyeopening. The temperature and dry weather were also nice reprieve from the humid and wet spell in Singapore. An almost two-hour bus ride into Tokyo awaits after you step off the flight, so be prepared. Once you are settled in, do obtain a subway map and mark out the route of the places you plan to visit. There are many train lines, so you may be confused. Visit the Tokyo Tower for the experience but there is a newer, higher tower that provides you with an excellent panoramic view.

Apart from sightseeing, eating is a big part of Japan. On a cold evening, a bowl of ramen from any stall on the street will warm the stomach. Each shop has its own way of preparing ramen and all of them are just as good. It doesn’t cost a bomb either! Most of the food is ordered through a vending machine to expedite the process.
