From dork to ultra-cool babe Iron Man 3: Metal mania
Kiss92 DJ Maddy Barber was bullied and called a dork during her teenage years but has since blossomed into a cool chick. She shares with us her life and her loves By Lester J Wan
What makes you smile? My family and rainbows. They are both colourful, beautiful and rare. What has been your most embarrassing moment? I have many, especially when it comes to on-air moments. I try to forget them! LOL
W
ith over 15 years of experience as a DJ, MC, and event host, Maddy Barber ranks one of the highest in the local scene terms of popularity and longevity as a voice talent and radio personality. It’s hard to believe that this is the same youthful DJ known by her maiden name as Medaline Tan, on 98.7FM in the early 1990s. What’s harder to believe is that not only does she still look youthful, she looks even more stunning than before. Maddy’s youthful visage belies the fact that she is now married, and a mother of two daughters to boot! We caught up with her when she wasn’t busy hosting Kiss92 FM’s breakfast show, to find out how she is and what she’s realised from her colourful life. What has been going on for Maddy Barber? Since moving to the breakfast show on Kiss92, things have been very hectic. The station is growing rapidly; and my schedule has been crazy, thanks to the buzz around it. Family still comes first though, so balancing work, family and me-time keeps me busy enough! Who is your musical icon, and why? Ella Fitzgerald. She is timeless and irreplaceable.
I’m aware you were a panellist during Social Media Week. How did that come about? I spend a lot of time online and so the organisers thought it would cool to have a female on the panel of dating experts, since I ended up with my “happily ever after”, with my husband whom I ‘met’ through an online rock climbing forum.
How would you compare yourself now and during your secondary school days? OMG I couldn’t be more different! I was really dorky back then. Constantly bullied and ostracised – definitely not the coolest chick around. HAHA, but look who has the last laugh now!
The continuing epic escapades of the world’s favourite billionaireinventor-superhero are not to be missed. After all, it’s another action-packed slug-fest the suit make the man? This actionpacked flick promises a sequel you won’t forget.
What advice do you have for those still looking for love or ‘the one’? Take your time to find that special someone who makes you laugh and whom you can’t live without. W Maddy hosts the breakfast show on Kiss92FM with Jason Johnson and Arnold Gay, from 6 to 10am.
“I was really dorky back then. Constantly bullied and ostracised – definitely not the coolest chick around. HAHA, but look who has the last laugh now!” Marvel’s Iron Man 3 pits the impetuous but brilliant Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, against a powerful enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark’s world is destroyed by his enemy, he embarks on a quest to seek out those who were responsible. This journey will test his mettle at every turn, as he is left to his own instincts and wits to protect the people closest to him. As Stark fights his way back, he will discover the answer to the question that has haunted him: Does the man make the suit, or does
Synopsis In a culmination of the first two films, and as follow-up to Marvel’s The Avengers, this sequel reveals how Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr) would find his way back into being a superhero, when his money and toys have been taken away. The movie begins in the high-tech garage of Stark Mansion, where he is building and perfecting his armour. Spending all his time tinkering with suits and building the Mark 42, his obsession affects all aspects of his life including his relationship with Pepper Potts (reprised by the lovely Gwyneth Paltrow). Blending two storylines Executive Producer Stephen Broussard explained that they had blended two classic stories in the Iron Man comics with a famous villain character, The Mandarin, adapted to present-day audiences, and combined with another storyline in the comic known
as Extremis. “It deals with the biological enhancement of humans, and Tony must face super-powered humans in that,” says Broussard. Chemistry and interaction Faced with what the momentous events in the past three movies mean, Stark starts having panic attacks. He has to deal with the revelation that he is not the only hero out there; neither is he the most powerful. There is also strong chemistry between Downey and Paltrow, even as Tony Stark and Pepper Potts navigate their relationship. Realistic hero “Marvel characters have resonated with audiences for 70 years because despite the spectacular and amazing things that they can do, people can relate to their many flaws. They struggle in a way that is recognisable and people like seeing super heroes save the day, but have difficulty doing it,” says Producer Kevin Feige, who is also President of Marvel Studios. With the high-tech action or metal battles in this frenetic film, and a star-studded cast, this is an adventure you cannot miss. Everyone will be talking about it. Iron Man 3 [PG13] Director: Shane Black Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall Genre: Action, Adventure Run Time: 131 min Release Date: 26 Apr

The hips don’t lie Belly dancing may be considered a feminine art form but males are also getting into the shimmy. See what the attraction is By Cheryl Chia
W
hen one thinks of belly dancing, the imagery that comes to mind is a scantily clad woman with veils or, in modern times, the singer Shakira. The Singapore Bellydance Evolution is one team that traverses all conceptions, with male belly dancing. Mr Darren Ho, founder of the Singapore Bellydance Evolution, started at the tender age of twelve and had his first performance six months after. “I saw Shakira on television when I was a kid and I actually didn’t know what type of dance that was but I was fixated by it. I was doing other genres of dance for fun at the time and my mother told me that she was doing belly dance. I said I wanted to pick it up and, of course, she said no,” Darren recalls with a laugh. “Being rebellious, I called up schools to see if they would take me and I came across ShimmySheik. My mom followed me to the first few classes to observe, and then she understood and allowed me to pursue my passion,” he continues. At the age of 15, he left the company and became a freelance dancer and teacher. The Singapore Bellydance Evolution fuses elements of contemporary and jazz dance with belly dancing. Ms Evon Hoe, who is also part of the Singapore Bellydance Evolution, was also similarly inspired by Shakira when she was ten years old. “I started in 2003 and I found a school through a flyer from the Substation. It is definitely not easy and takes a lot of dedication. You have to really know how to isolate your body,” she says. Both Evon and Darren have gone on to the countries of the origin of belly dance, such as Egypt and Turkey, to explore the dance and to take part in master classes. Evon considers it her second home, and is fairly fluent in Turkic as well. What is the difference between Egyptian and Turkish belly dance, you ask? The Turkish version is more aggressive while the Egyptian one is “more sensual”. There are currently two other male belly dancers apart from Darren in the Singaporean scene.
HOME The Goods You Desire Hong Kong brand Goods of Desire has launched its weddingthemed Double Happiness series By Cheryl Chia hong kong brand Goods of Desire adds quirk and a modern twist to the old and sometimes kitschy double happiness Chinese wedding theme. Double Happiness refers to the joyous union, for couples to be wed, and it is often seen in customary Chinese weddings to signify an auspicious start for the newly-married couples. Known for their tongue-in-cheek Delay No More (a play on a Cantonese profanity) items, cheekily packaged male underwear and nostalgic Good Morning towel-inspired pillow cases and kampong-style trays, they make this traditional symbol hip. With cute items bearing the double happiness symbol, preparing traditional Chinese wedding gifts is no longer as tacky as it used to be, with these subtle touches. The Double Happiness Bowl Set with Spoon ($16 for the bowl, $6 for the spoon) and Double Happiness Ice Cube Maker
($17) make unique household items. Use the ice-cube maker to make jelly desserts if you wish. Take the wedding day bed sheets down a notch with these ($352, one king sized bed sheet, two pillow cases and a quilt cover) in toned down maroon shades and with monogram prints. The store has also brought in novelty items such as the kneeling pillows ($35) and wine bottle stoppers ($46). If you are a Samsung S3 user, they also have mobile cases ($35) for your phone. The store is also holding a “What is your Double Happiness?” photo contest. Submit your photos that best represent Double Happiness, by emailing them to Singapore@goodsofdesire.com. The best photo entry wins $800 worth of cash vouchers while the most popular photo entry on the Goods of Desire Singapore Facebook page wins a pair of Double Happiness Photo Magnet set in Gold. “I do not think there is a difference between male and female belly dancing. The male versions can have a more muscular frame with more emphasis on the chest and upper body. But the approach is the same,” says Darren. He goes on to explain the two types of belly dance – ‘folkloric’ and oriental dance. With ‘folkloric’ belly dance having a storyline, males can assume the masculine role in the belly dancing performance. “Men always have a misconception about belly dancing. It really depends on the message the performers are trying to get across. Some men prefer a more flirtatious style on stage due to the nature of the piece,” he says. Darren also has a dream that one day schools will put the genre into the curriculum so more people can understand the art form. “It is nothing sleazy if placed in the right context,” he adds. They also have a performance coming up on May 11 entitled Oriental Majestic that coincides with World Bellydance Day. Each ticket retails at $28 which includes a halal buffet, and 20 per cent of the proceeds will go to the Lee Ah Mooi Old Folks Home to help them purchase daily necessities such as adult diapers and milk formula. Other belly dance troupes from various schools in Singapore will also be taking part in the performance. W The event will take place at Chong Pang Community Club in Yishun from 7.30pm to 10pm. “The macarons are flown in from Switzerland, as with for the other Asian outlets...”
Macaron madness French macaron chain Ladurée has finally hit our shores with its irresistible sweet goodies By Cheryl Chia Words cannot describe how excited I was when I heard that Ladurée was coming to Singapore. Going to Paris to get my almond cookie fix is not the best solution. Seeing other countries in the region such as Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea have already had a taste, it is about time for us. At $3.80 a piece, the macarons are not cheap compared to those from TWG Tea or Canelé but they are definitely worth it. The macarons are flown in from Switzerland, as with for the other Asian outlets, to ensure the same experience worldwide. Since opening last week, queues at Ladurée have been snaking as people wait for a bite of these famous macarons. The chain has been around since 1862 when Louis Ernest Ladurée created a bakery. Eventually, the place was transformed into a pastry store after a fire. This store attracted Parisian high society. Ladurée’s wife then helped to transform it into one of the first salon de thés in town. The Hour Glass Limited is a partner in bringing the brand to
Singapore with The Holder Group, owners of Ladurée since 1993. Mr David Holder, Chairman of Ladurée says, “The Ladurée tradition dates back to the 1860s and there is a very strong heritage and brand reputation in what we do and offer customers worldwide.” There are two Ladurée shops in Ngee Ann City. One is on the second floor, beside Van Cleef and Arpels. Those currently featured include the Marie Antoinette, a turquoise, floral tea scented macaron, and Chocolat Yuzu, with chocolate ganache sandwiched in between its attractive mustard-yellow shell. My favourite is the Petale de Rose, a beautiful rose water scented one, and the Caramel Fleur de Sel with its salted caramel-filled middle. Also try the Citron macaron, the lemony and tart taste combats the sweetness of the shells. Ladurée has also created a special pretty powder pink box ($7.60) for Singapore. Feast on delicious crab near you Crab is a local favourite but it is not easy finding a nice place to savour good crab dishes. Uncle Leong has three restaurants to be near to you
“Its inviting aroma alone already is mouthwatering.”
WEEKENDER CUT-OUT VOUCHER
Uncle Leong Seafood was previously founded in an unassuming, modest coffee shop in the bustling Ang Mo Kio estate and has since moved to Toa Payoh. Despite its humble beginnings, Uncle Leong Seafood has made a name for itself as one of the must-go places for crabs. Thanks to its signature recipe, it has been fast gaining popularity since its first public taste in 2002. Now, Uncle Leong counts among its clientele both locals and foreigners, including a group of IMF delegates who filled five tables recently. When you go to Uncle Leong Seafood, make sure you order Uncle Leong’s famous Shimmering Sand Crab Delight, which features succulent crabs drizzled with Uncle Leong’s signature sauce, topped with a sprinkle of oats. Its inviting aroma alone already is mouth-watering. When you dig in, the taste of fresh crab flesh complements the wonderful combination of flavours, and will definitely leave you longing for more. If your appetite for seafood has not yet been satiated, consider ordering their Crab Bee-Hoon, Guinness Pork Ribs and Spicy Signature Hor Fun. If the queue is anything to go by, their seafood offerings will not leave you disappointed. Uncle Leong Seafood will have a total of three branches of the restaurant. It will be opening a new branch soon at Block 262,
Jurong East Street 24, #01-485. Now is a good time to take your family there for a crab feast, since you can get $10 off for the first $100 spent in the Punggol and Toa Payoh branches. RECIPE
Grape Tart Chef Caroline of Ren Bakers is back. This time, she shares with us a recipe for Grape Tart Fruit tarts are a popular snack for Singaporeans. Nevertheless, few know that it is actually not difficult to make fruit tarts. Grape tarts are one of the more commonly found tarts, and Chef Caroline Liew of Ren Bakers is back to show us how. Ingredients • 118g of crushed Digestive Biscuit • 50g of ground Almonds • 80g of melted Unsalted Butter • 6 Egg Yolks • 115g of Sugar • 35g of Corn Flour • 490g of Milk • 1 teaspoon of Vanilla • 550g of Grapes Method Crust • For the crust, mix all the crushed digestive biscuits, ground almonds and melted unsalted butter until combined, then press the crumb mixture into a 9" tart pan. • Bake crust for 10 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Pastry Cream • Whisk egg yolks and sugar until thick and light, slowly whisk in the corn flour. • In a saucepan, bring milk just to a boil, and gradually add milk to the egg mixture, whisking constantly. • When all the milk has been incorporated, return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. • Transfer cream to a bowl, cover with cling wrap, placing it directly on the surface of the cream. Let cream cool. To Assemble • Whisk pastry cream until smooth, spread evenly in the crust and arrange grapes on top of pastry cream. Press the grapes into the cream. • Chill for 2 hours. • Just before serving, dust with confectioner's sugar.

“Shelter in the Woods” is an apt name for this dining establishment, designed exactly to look like a pretty wood cabin in a forest, perhaps somewhere in idyllic Europe. Much like what one would expect, good alcohol, hearty food and robust conversation take precedence. On a weekday night, the place is packed and the banter does not stop until closing time. Billed as a “modern tavern”, Shelter in the Woods is furnished with heavy oak tables with cast iron finishing, a romantic faux fireplace with a mantelpiece, and even a mounted stag head.

For those who love a comforting drink on a cold day, or perhaps at the end of a work day, Shelter in the Woods boasts a collection of 26 types of house-macerated rums, made from a base of La Mauny White Rum, from the exotic Caribbean island of Martinique. Macerated in large glass jars visible to patrons, some for over two months, the rums are flavoured with a variety of delicious fruit and spices, giving each its unique flavour and personality. The Shelter in the Woods Signature Rum is already fantastic. It is a mix of La Mauny Rum and Sugar cane syrup macerated in oak barrels, Orange & Lemon Peels, Tahitian Vanilla, Ginger, and Tonka Beans.

The more adventurous might like to try the gourmand rums such as Normandy – made from apples and calvados, Tagadas – made from Haribo strawberry candy, Suzette, a play on the flavours of the dessert Crepe Suzette – made from Oranges, and Tonka Beans and Grand Marnier, and Carambar – made from French caramel candy sticks. There are also specialty rums such as Green Tea and Azuki Bean, Earl Grey and Honey, and Hibiscus. These unique rums are all carefully and lovingly macerated by Restaurant Manager, Maxime Larquier. Self-proclaimed ‘bo-chup’ local entrepreneurs Statement print colloquial Singaporean phrases on t-shirts. Who says Singaporeans can’t take a joke? By Cheryl Chia
S
ingapore has gotten a bad rap for being stiff, rigid and unfunny, but with recent appearances of satirical programmes and comedy clubs taking off, there is no reason why locally-made clothing shouldn’t join in the fray. Statement, by young entrepreneurs Visakan Veerasamy and Desmond Chua, initially started off as just doodles in a notebook. Visakan, better known as Visa, says, “Originally, it started out with me scribbling random phrases in school and then years later I found the exercise book. Then, I put those phrases into MS Paint with a t-shirt template and uploaded it to Facebook. Desmond, who was a friend of a friend, saw it and sent me a long message saying how we could make this work, and we did.” The pair – both of whom have day jobs in marketing and graphic design – had ample help from the industry, such as from Eugene Tay of Less Than Positive, that showed them the ropes and convinced them to try. Visa continues, “We’ve had an amazing response since then. We expected only our friends and family to buy the shirts but who knew our Facebook page would shoot up to 800 likes. We’ve sold over 200 t-shirts since then.” The t-shirts are plain white and come in crew-neck cotton, with printed standard black type. Popular local phrases such as “Please Revert.”, “Uh Uh Siol” and “Eh sia la” (plus a few more Hokkien-based acronyms
process, we get to meet the people who choose the t-shirts and they are always interesting,” says Desmond. “Some buyers we get are usually Singaporeans abroad or about to go abroad; people buying for their overseas pals or exchange students,” he adds. They have also started a campaign with their customers posting images of themselves in Statement’s t-shirts around the world. Thus far they’ve had people wear “a piece of home” in Australia, the USA and even in the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy. Visa also says that the t-shirts usually act as an ice-breaker when and if people ask them what it means. “It’s always fun to explain,” he says. Visa continues, “We aren’t saying this idea has not been thought of before, but we have kept the t-shirts classic and simple for that juxtaposition of crass and class. People who buy our

Help for your cracked feet Cracked heels and damaged feet can cause great discomfort but treating them correctly can improve symptoms quickly and effectively
The long and the short of the beauty industry for this week Ralph Lauren Big Pony
1
By Cheryl Chia Our flip flop and open-toed shoe wearing nation might regret its actions in a few years, after constant foot abuse. Wearing sensible shoes that provide support, usually heel support, can help in preventing that. However, some people are still more predisposed to the affliction due to dry skin. Mr Amit Saha, Group Technical Manager of LaCorium Heath International Pty Ltd, the company behind Dermal Therapy (a range of products specifically targeted at cracked heels) says, “Cracked heels are caused by insufficient moisture in the feet and heels. The severe dryness causes the skin to split open, leaving fissures.” He adds, “Cracks that are not treated can become deep and painful and, in more serious conditions, may become infected. Prolonged standing, dehydration, insufficient moisturising, hot showers, wearing open shoes or flip flops, are just some of the

2 “Intensively Moisturising your feet daily is a sure way to prevent and soothe cracked feet.” factors that can cause cracked heels as well.” Moisturising your feet daily is a sure way to prevent and soothe cracked feet. Wearing comfortable shoes that do not put unnecessary pressure on any section of the foot is also key. Human beings were meant to walk barefooted, with our body weight distributed evenly on the feet. Wearing shoes that are high heeled or too tight can also cause foot problems such as corns, calluses and bunions. Mr Saha recommends “footwear that fits properly, to give your feet and toes sufficient breathing room”. We’ve gotten a tester, Ms Agnes Lee, who suffers from cracked heels to test out the products from Dermal Therapy to see if they lived up to their promise of results in three days. Agnes was pleased with its results. “The heel balm ($6.90) was nongreasy and was absorbed quickly into my heels, so I didn’t have to use a lot. After three days, the
appearance of my cracked heels improved but did not disappear completely. I might have to use it a little longer,” she says. Dermal Therapy’s line of products includes lip, heel and hand balms and sticks, nail strengtheners and body washes. Ms Lee also tried the Peppermint Intensive Foot Rescue ($24.90) from The Body Shop and loved the tingly and cooling effect of the peppermint, but found the texture too oily. We also helped to try out the Dermal Therapy Heel Magic ($15.50) and Laline Classic Foot Cream ($23.90 in a Manicure Pedicure Mini Kit). The latter was also absorbed quickly into the skin and left a smooth feel after use, whereas the former felt like a deodorant stick for the foot but keeps the hands free of the cream. The heel products from Dermal Therapy are also diabetic friendly. Dermal Therapy is available at major Watsons and Guardian
stores; the Peppermint Intensive Foot Rescue is available at all The Body Shop stores; and the Manicure Pedicure Mini Kit is available in Laline stores from May 13.

ou don’t need the latest gadgets. Here are more play ideas:
11. Concoct a Potion: Use flour, water and food colouring. Try mixing in shaving cream or other gooey stuff lying in your house, just so you can see what happens. Put on a wizard’s hat, and pretend you’re mixing a magic potion. 12. Pillow Fight! 13. Read a Book and Enact It: This was suggested by a reader on my recent post, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt [on the book by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury]. The best part is, any good book can be inspiration for dramatic play, and you can improvise any way you like by using whatever materials or ‘obstacles’ you can find. Great for building the imagination. Or, do some craft work inspired by the book. For instance, after reading The Hungry Caterpillar [by Eric Carle], you can do a simple caterpillar craft. 14. Peek-a-Boo Sensory Play:

What is a Social Enterprise?
This game is good for younger children and infants. Put different materials of different textures into a bag and let your children reach their hands in to touch. Use words to describe each specific material, such as “soft”, “tickly”, and “furry”. 15. Name Hopscotch: Use crayon or chalk to draw boxes and write each letter of your child’s name in each box, starting with the first. 16. Crayon Rocks: This was an accidental discovery. Fellow mumblogger Evelyn introduced crayon rocks to me. Besides being easy for little hands to handle, I found that they were good for counting. You can also divide the colourful rocks into little groups like we do, to get a bit of math action. If you’d like to purchase some, you can get them from www.2littlesprouts.com 17. Guess Paper Animals: Have you ever imagined clouds looking like animals? Give your child different coloured pieces of paper and ask him or her to randomly tear them into different shapes. Guess what animal or object each piece looks like. You can further build on this by turning it into a craft session – add on different parts of the animal’s body onto it using crayons or whatever you have at home. 18. Puppet Play: Puppets are fun props to have around the home. You can make them dance to music or better still, rope in the kids and create your own puppet drama! 19. Pack a Picnic and Sit Around the

Balcony to Enjoy It: I can’t think of a better way to enjoy a picnic than in the great outdoors. You can also get everyone to close their eyes and make-believe they’re in a beautiful garden in a country of your choice. 20. Make Goop: Mix 1/2 cup of corn flour and 1/4 cup of water in a bowl, and add two to three drops of food colouring. It’s like half dough, half body paint. Let the kids play and make a mess just before bath-time. There! I’ve tried my best to keep these ideas simple and either costing nothing or next to nothing. Let your kids explore and use their imagination. Let them try different ways to play, and take their cue when they’re tired or want to do something else. W From mamawearpapashirt.com
Mamawearpapashirt June has two little blessings: Vera, a bubbly four-year-old and Javier, a curious two-yearold. Mamawearpapashirt was inspired by Vera, who shouted those words in glee when she saw her mama wearing her papa’s shirt. To June, the phrase represents not just a funny memory, but is also symbolic of the many shirts that women wear.
you may have have heard of the Yellow Ribbon Project that helps ex-offenders and promotes awareness of their needs and their cause. You might even have contributed something to them. However, they need a lot more than that. Thankfully, there are social enterprises that help them directly. Industrial & Services Cooperative Society Ltd (ISCOS) is a social enterprise that helps ex-offenders and their families to re-enter society. With the mission “to promote self-esteem and economic independence in ex-offenders while guiding them towards good citizenship and good value systems”, ISCOS extends a hand to them, helping them in practical ways so that they can rebuild their lives. ISCOS provides various services such as Job Placement and Employability Training, and giving support and guidance to their members. Though they have paid their dues for their mistakes, they are still faced with the social stigma. Some employers, friends, and even family
members shun them which, apart from other challenges, takes a huge toll on their self-esteem. To help its members, ISCOS has also set up companies such as Mister Clean, to provide employment opportunities for the ex-offenders. ISCOS also works closely with companies, like Power Pack Networking International and Bcreative Pro, to provide them with employment or training opportunities. ISCOS also provides subsidies on courses such as Building and Construction Supervisor Safety Course and Class 4 Driving License, among others. These help exoffenders attain skills so that they can find employment. Everyone deserves a second chance. ISCOS, 237 Alexandra Road, #04-19, Singapore 159929, Tel: 6743 7885
A social enterprise, like any other business, is set up to cater to an unmet need, and to earn a profit. Nonetheless, other than simply earning profit, a social enterprise has a social mission. Each social enterprise is unique in its own way, addressing the various needs of different groups of people, as well as helping and empowering various groups of the disadvantaged. Some even address environmental issues. Social enterprises are gradually popping up all over Singapore. Running a business while having a social cause – a social enterprise is indeed the business of the future. Although a social enterprise helps the disadvantaged, it is different from a charity. A charity sustains itself through donation, while a social enterprise is selfsustained, through its business model. Some social enterprises even empower and encourage their beneficiaries to sustain themselves. Some social enterprises that you may have heard of might include Eighteen Chefs and Joan Bowen. Here, at Weekender, we are also proud to be a social enterprise.

Fully aware of the neighbourhood it is in, the Naumi Liora tries its very best to ensure guests are clued in on the fact that they are in Singapore’s “It” neighbourhood. This is evident even from the hotel’s shophouse façade which appears especially stunning at night when it is lit. The lobby doesn’t disappoint, and it exudes a personality that’s fitting for a boutique hotel. Snacks are available and replenished round-the-clock, perfect for those late night hunger pangs. One weekend, I had the opportunity to have Naumi Liora as my base on an exploration tour of the neighbourhood. I was hosted in one of the bright and charming Liora Heritage rooms. Entering for the first time, I had a sense that I was in for
By Albino Christopher Chua a different experience. Due to the shophouse setting and layout, the room lacked the big hotel vibe, which was a welcome departure. From my room, there was also a great view of the neighbouring shophouses and the buzzing street-level activity down below through the Frenchstyle windows. The overarching ambience was a mixture of both the old and the new. Amid the modernist interiors, all the creature comforts that one would expect to find were in the room, including branded toiletries from C.O. Bigelow, cable TV with dozens of channels as well as free Wi-Fi. Add to that some extra amenities such as a coffeemaker, and it makes for an ideal staycation in Singapore. For those looking for extra space, the hotel also has its brand
of Porch rooms with adjoining gardens. With a table and lounge chairs, the terrace is perfect for those looking to unwind outdoors with tea or coffee brewed from the array found in-room. Luxurious rooms and a wide range of amenities are key to a satisfying stay but it’s incomplete without the ideal location. Naumi Liora scores two thumbs up for this, as it’s next door to
restaurants such as Keong Saik Snacks, Ember and Esquina. The street also comes alive at night when speakeasies such as The Library open their doors to those in the know of the week’s password. For those on a tighter budget, well-known Tong Ah Eating House is across the street. This is definitely one of the best places to stay in the Chinatown area. W

Travel in style: Travel tips from British Airways A trip always starts with booking a flight. However, not many know how to travel in style. Here are some tips from British Airways’ ambassador, Helena Flynn By Helena Flynn
N
Often when I travel, I avoid eating in-flight and prefer to maximise my sleeping time as I tend to be heading straight to a meeting when I land. On board, I rarely drink alcohol and mostly sip on peppermint tea. Have you ever wondered how the flight attendants always look refreshed even after a long-haul flight? This is due to them moving around and not lying in one position for hours. I recommend that you should try to move around, stretch out and have a look at our on-board wellbeing tips video on the in-flight entertainment system. On arrival or in transit All British Airways flights from Singapore to London now arrive at Terminal 5, the airline’s exclusive state-of-the-art home at London Heathrow. If you feel like spoiling yourself, Terminal 5, London Heathrow, has a great selection of shops, including Harrods, which has an amazing selection of bikinis, wraps, sun hats and beach bags all year round. Wishing you all a glamorous trip, wherever you are headed. - Helena Flynn, British Airways Ambassador Other tips from British Airways You can download the British Airways’ smartphone app by visiting www. ba2go.com on your mobile phone, so that you can select seats and check in for flights on the go. You can also reserve your seats online for free 24 hours before you fly through the smartphone app, or at www.ba.com Arrive early at the airport prior to your flight, especially when flying from London Heathrow Terminal 5, where you can enjoy duty free shopping at its best. After a long-haul flight, you can consider using British Airways lounge facilities to freshen up. These facilities are available for Club World and First customers. www.ba.com

For those who start panicking about what to pack or wear, here are my tips for travelling in style to guarantee that you look and feel your best, no matter how long your journey may be. In the Air As the air is dry when you fly, a good moisturiser is crucial. I always use Crème de la Mer face cream, which can be bought at Heathrow Terminal 5 or in flight. It is a luxury but tends to last for about four months, so it is a good investment. Pile it on the night before you fly, and if you can avoid wearing makeup on the day of travel, even better. If not, keep it light and avoid longlasting lipsticks, which are drying. Once on board, I remove my make-up with facial wipes and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. I also take my Evian water mist spray on board and spray my face throughout the flight to keep my skin soft. If you are lucky enough to be in our First cabin, you will be given comfortable pyjamas and slippers. In our other cabins, I recommend you bring your own pyjamas so that you can fully relax. You may get some funny looks, but it’s important to be comfortable. I change immediately after boarding.

Carpe diem! BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOCUS

The best place in the world to do business? The environment in Singapore is highly conducive for business. For
seven years running, Singapore has been recognised as the best place to do business in the world by the World Bank. Yet, businesses here have begun to feel the squeeze on manpower in the midst of a struggling world economy. The challenges of restructuring to be less dependent on foreign labour, raising productivity, while expanding operations have stretched their resources thin. Recently, the government announced a series of measures to encourage growth and restructuring and to ease the economic pressure for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The proposal includes help for SMEs seeking new business growth opportunities, assistance programmes to encourage internationalisation and the collaboration between larger enterprises and SMEs will be promoted.
Resources for you to Succeed Success Resources has decided to turn the focus of the National Achievers Congress in Singapore this year to business owners and investors, to build upon the capabilities of those who have experience and to provide the best foundations to anyone that has thought of starting out. The keynote speakers were selected with this in mind: Sir Richard Branson will share from his experiences of starting out himself to becoming one of the most recognised and respected brands in the world. International business mentor Keith Cunningham will be there to build upon, redefine, and restructure existing business and investing foundations and mentalities. Les Brown, one of the most sought after inspirational speakers will ignite one’s passion for taking action and seeking out opportunities. Other world class speakers will delve into wealth creation, business strategies, and personal growth that will develop one’s resources to create sources of income that anyone of any
Entrepreneurial aspirations In spite of having access to resources, starting one does not come without challenges, chief of them being the unwillingness to risk striking out on one’s own. Students cited this as a deterrent. According to a survey last year by the NUS Entrepreneurship Centre, part of a global project by the University of St Gallen, Switzerland, 38 per cent of tertiary students in Singapore aspired to be entrepreneurs. These gave repeated thought to founding a business, compared to 36.3 per cent from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. However, 2.5 per cent of students from OECD countries had already founded a firm, compared with Singapore’s 1.1 per cent. The challenge for Singaporeans is not the lack of funding, resources, or desire. Rather, the lack of will to take action and to do something. The logical first step would be to sign up for the National Achievers Congress and seek out the answers there before risking the capital on a business venture. What it takes to be an entrepreneur When people think of entrepreneurs, they think about the success, the money, the glamour associated with the word. Rarely do people look to what got them to that point. The truth is that every entrepreneur started somewhere and the point they started from was their failures.
