An SMS notification will

be sent to them once their order is ready for collection. Payment is made at the 7-Eleven store when you collect your purchase, via cash, cashcard or NETs. The order will be held 48 hours.

E HAPPIER Former national captain Nazri Nasir with his sons Adam and Amer

For a pdf copy of Weekender visit: www.facebook.com/weekendersgp

Pride of the

Nazri is now coach of the under-15 team

N

azri Nasir was a battling midfielder in Singapore’s national football team, and was team captain from the late 1990s to early 2000s. He was a key member of the squad that won the Malaysian League and Cup double in 1994, and led the side as they won the ASEAN Football Championship title in 1998. Now, his sons are poised to carry on his legacy in the national team. One of the oldest youth football tournaments in the world, the Lion City Cup is perhaps most renowned for unearthing local football legends such as Fandi Ahmad, V Sundramoorthy and, more recently, Hariss Harun. Nazri shares his pride in his own Lion Cubs, as his sons Adam and Amer are currently competing in the under-16 and under-15 teams in the Lion City Cup.

But I said, I’ll show it to him, and I was selected for the national team. No choice, I had to make a passport and my dad had to do for me; then, from then on, he supported me. He watched all of my trainings and my games as much as he could because he knows that it’s what I love, and he’s there to support me. So, I feel I’m very blessed for having parents who were always there for me.

How supportive were your parents when you started playing football? I come from the background with my mum as a normal housewife and my dad is a very strict dad. When I was selected for the national youth team then, I went for trainings without anybody knowing much. Only [for] my mum, I will tell her I’m going for trainings. But my dad, he is very strict.

How do you feel about both your sons participating in the tournament, with Amer in the under-15 and Adam in the under-16 teams? I’m very proud of them; they were selected by the NFA (National Football Academy). Of course, there are expectations on both of my sons that are very high. As I was a national player, and coach now, I know it’s tough on them too with these expectations. But

What is it like leading the Under-15 team as coach in the Lion City Cup, with your son Amer in the team? It has been good; I treat everyone fairly, and my team knows that when I am strict with them it is for their own good. They understand that.

Daddy LION Nazri Nasir was the captain of Singapore’s national football team from the late 1990s to early 2000s. His sons are poised to carry on his legacy

By Lester J Wan Adam in action for the under-16 team against Arsenal

I always tell them, just go out and do your best. For Adam (in the U-16 team), I tell him, you listen to your coach. I don’t know what exact instructions Coach Robin [Chitrakar] might have for the team, that is best for the team. I will tell Adam what he did wrong, what can be better, but in terms of the team I won’t get involved. what do you love most about your sons? They are very dedicated; they have a very good attitude. They respect their elders a lot, and I like that and would like them to continue like that. They are also very humble; that’s very important. What do you do as a family over the weekend when there is no training? We always spend time together. We like to watch movies together.

Triumphant return for Daft Punk This album will reel you in slowly but surely. Charmaine Phua of Power 98 tells us why By Charmaine Phua Daft Punk is back. The long awaited album from the helmetdonning French duo, Random Access Memories, veers away from their usual EDM sounds and brings out the musicality of the 1970s disco era with soft rock and progressive pop thrown in. After an eight-year wait for this fourth album, this brave new “chill out-soul” sound definitely comes as a surprise to Daft Punk fans. Thomas Bangalter and GuyManuel de Homem-Christo, the men behind the sleek masks, spared no expense for this album, recording live in the best studios, working with top notch musicians like Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams, and even threw in choirs and orchestras. The basic idea of the album, according to Bangalter, is to “draw a parallel between the brain and Charmaine Phua of Power 98

We also go out together, sometimes to the beach, but we like to spend time at home too; as long as we are together, it’s good.

Tune in to Charmaine Phua on Eats & Entertainment as she shares her love for food and movies on Saturdays, 5pm-9pm, on Power 98FM.

Apart from Adam and Amer, Nazri has another son who is ten years old, and a daughter who is nine years old. W

About Charmaine Phua Charmaine Phua is Producer/ Presenter & Music Executive of Power 98FM. She produces and presents her own show and also programmes the music for Power 98FM.

The Lion City Cup 2013 is ongoing, and the final is on Jun 16.

Lifetime channel is premiering in Asia, with Jennifer Love Hewitt back on screen in a Saucy NEW role in The Client List

World War Z: Zombie Apocalypse now Brad Pitt stars in a Zombie Apocalypse movie with a slight difference, pitting the mindless creatures against armed forces and humanity on a huge scale

On an ordinary day, Gerry Lane (played by Brad Pitt) and his family find their quiet drive interrupted by urban gridlock. An ex-United Nations investigator, Lane senses that this is no ordinary traffic jam. As police helicopters buzz the sky and motorcycle cops careen wildly below, the city erupts into utter chaos. Zombie Apocalypse Something is causing hordes of people to viciously attack each other: a lethal virus that is spread through a single bite, turning healthy humans into something unrecognisable, unthinking and feral. Neighbour turns on neighbour; a helpful stranger suddenly becomes a dangerous enemy. The origins of the virus are unknown, and the number of the infected grows exponentially larger each day, quickly becoming a global pandemic. As the infected overwhelm the world’s armies and rapidly topple its governments, Lane is forced to return to his dangerous former life to insure the safety of his family, leading a desperate worldwide search for the source of the epidemic and a

the hard drive – the random way that memories are stored”, and they demonstrate that with the variety of sounds on one album. The first single, Get Lucky, features the smooth vocals of Pharrell Williams, and it quickly won over the audience with its memorable hook and catchy groove. It hit #1 on the UK Singles Chart, and also was ranked top ten in the music charts in over 28 countries. It is also the most streamed new song on Spotify. I didn’t think much of it when I first heard it but, trust me, give it a couple of listens and that song pulls you in like quicksand. Other tracks include Lose Yourself To Dance which, oddly, is tough to actually dance to, but it has a groove that may get you to the beat. Doin It Right is another track that will grow on you, while Give Life Back To Music plays up the old-school vibe of the 1970s. The success of Random Access Memories is undeniable – it debuted at number one in 22 countries worldwide, including the Billboard 200. You’ll definitely be tapping your foot to the beats.

means to stop its alarming and relentless spread. From Page to ‘Reality’ World War Z began as a postapocalyptic horror novel by Max Brooks called World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, written in first person and consisting of individual accounts from those who experienced it. Says Pitt, “Max’s book treats the zombie genre as a global pandemic, spreading much like we’ve witnessed viruses such as SARS travel. What happens when this jumps the fire break… What happens when everything we concern our days with is rendered useless? What happens when power structures and societal

norms are obliterated? How will we survive?” The vast scope of the story also intrigued Producer Jeremy Kleiner, who was familiar with Brooks’ work, having read his companion book or field manual, The Zombie Survival Guide. “The world scale – the intersection of zombies, politics, institutions – intrigued us and added really cool, contemporary elements unusual in the zombie genre,” says Kleiner. Screen Incarnation However, the novel’s multiperson approach did not appeal for a motion picture screenplay. Ultimately, the filmmakers opted to tell the story through

one protagonist but also endeavoured to maintain the essence of the themes and plot points that riveted them. “Zombie movies” have become their own genre and are currently enjoying a popular renaissance. Director Marc Forster believes there is a thematic reason for their resurgence and many zombie hallmarks resonated with him and drew him to the project. “I find zombie movies fascinating in that they were popular in the 1970s, at a time of uncertainty and upheaval in society. And now when we are again living in a time of change and skepticism, zombies are popular. They’re such a great metaphor – representing a sort of unconsciousness and hold a mirror to what’s happening in the world,” Forster muses. “For me, ‘World War Z’ is intense and real and fun… also non-stop, epic, scary and, I hope, ultimately satisfying,” adds Producer Dede Gardner. World War Z [TBA] Director: Marc Forster Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale and Matthew Fox Genre: Thriller Run Time: 116 min Release: 20 Jun

Come Jun 17, cable television channel Lifetime will be premiering in Asia. One of the anchor shows on this top channel for women’s entertainment in the USA is the first season of The Client List, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. Following a wildly successful movie of the same story, Jennifer Love Hewitt stars in this series as Riley Parks, 34, a housewife from Texas whose husband has left her. With children to feed, she is in dire straits and has to take on a job as a masseuse at a seemingly traditional day spa to make ends meet. However, she soon realises that the parlour provides more than massages and some of her colleagues provide ‘extra’ services. She is forced to make the decision whether to take up the opportunity to earn more cash. She navigates the delicate balance between two morallyconflicting lives, as a single mother in a conservative town, struggling to provide for her family; and as a businesswoman working in an undesirable profession. As she struggles with the moral dilemma, she keeps her work under wraps. Jennifer Love Hewitt shares with us a few words on her saucy new role.

What research did you do? Did you go to a massage parlour? No, I chose not to. The funny thing is that even though the show has this provocative sort of setting, I know what people are talking about is this sort of ‘happy ending’ aspect. The part that I did more research on was being a single mom; somebody who emotionally has to carry all these secrets. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learnt about yourself in your career? I bounce back pretty quickly from rejection. In 24 years in the business, you have a lot of doors slammed in your face, or a lot of people say mean things, or you’re not right for this or whatever. Every time, I’m constantly surprised at how the span of time gets quicker that I get okay with it, go out, grab something, and I’m over it. What do you do, in your downtime, to recharge? I watch The Voice and American Idol. I sit in my Brookstone foot massager and — it’s so exciting at my house — and I don’t know what else. The Client List is on Lifetime Channel, Mondays at 10pm. What would she do to take care of her kids?

veryone knows that regular, vigorous exercise improves one’s cardiovascular and immune systems, and muscle and bone strength. But not many know that the less vigorous activity of walking yields health benefits too. For one, walking can provide similar benefits as running does, if one spends equivalent amounts of energy, says Dr Daniel Wai, an endocrinologist, consultant and medical director of Daniel Wai Diabetes, Thyroid and Hormone Clinic, Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Walking can also improve vision, aiding in age-related eye conditions. How Walking Helps the Eye Walking may delay the onset and severity of cataracts, where the eyes’ clear lens becomes cloudy with age, says Dr Chng Nai Wee, an ophthalmologist, clinical director and partner at Eagle Eye Centre. Exercise reduces inflammation and irregularities in cells lining the arteries playing a role in agerelated macular degeneration, which afflicts the centre of the retina in one in four people.

A study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology where researchers from University of Wisconsin tracked 4,000 people found that those who walked more than 12 blocks daily were about 30 per cent less likely to develop macular degeneration. Walking lowers the eye ball pressure in glaucoma, where high eye pressure damages the optic nerve, says Dr Wai. for CIRCULATION & Diabetes People with artery blockage in the legs may find that walking improves their blood circulation, and pregnant women with deep vein thrombosis can find pain relief more quickly through walking than resting in bed, he added. Another lesser known fact is that walking helps to prevent and

reduce the severity of diabetes. It reduces insulin resistance of the body by reducing fat in the body, abdomen and liver, and lets blood sugar enter muscles to be stored or used. Walking uses up sugar instead of fat, and stops the liver from producing excessive sugar. Other Health Benefits “We know that people who walk more live longer, get fewer heart attacks, strokes and cancer,” says Dr Wai. “Also, it prevents and improves chronic diseases such as hypertension and high cholesterol, and obesity-related diseases such as fatty liver and polycystic ovarian syndrome,” he adds. The American Physical Therapy Association found that walking improved the elderly’s health,

balance perception, gait speed, and the co-ordination of balance and locomotion of the brain, eye, and limbs. Walking helps counter dementia, depression, anxiety, and perceived stress. Maximising Your Walking With its reputation as a garden city, Singapore has numerous places for those who are keen to start walking, including community parks, reservoirs and Gardens by the Bay. To reap maximum benefits, Dr Wai recommends strength training in combination with walking, while Dr Chng suggests sustained brisk walking of 2km to 4km, thrice a week for more than 20 minutes each time until one perspires. White Rose Café at York Hotel unveils a new menu with local delights

By Cheryl Chia

Take daddy out for a uniquely Singaporean meal at the White Rose Café this Father’s Day. Their new Treasured Flavours of Singapore menu serves up true blue Singaporean dishes which instil nostalgia. Encompassing over 20 dishes, this thoughtful selection of food also includes a repertoire of dishes from the now defunct Soon Heng Restaurant, which was known for its Singaporean Chinese-style Fish Head Curry, an iconic dish the restaurant created back in the day. Ms Jessie Tan, Hotel Manager of York Hotel says, “Sadly, we are losing some of our local flavours as more heritage hawkers and eateries are closing down and age-old recipes are not passed on to the next generation. This menu took many months to reach fruition…” The Treasured Flavours of Singapore is available for dine in and takeaway and needs at least a day in advance to ensure freshness of the ingredients required for the dishes. The Curry Fish Head ($42 for whole, $28 for half) is definitely

the star of the new menu. The flavourful tamarind-based curry sauce is cooked together with tomatoes and lady’s fingers. Sliced onions and fresh chillies and a fresh snapper head make this dish perfect. Have a glass of Calamansi Plum Drink ($5) to go with it. We also like the Sambal King Prawns ($8) – large succulent prawns tossed in sambal paste – and the Black Ink Sotong ($12), a traditional kampong-style dish with chewy and smoky squids, which has a slightly spicy aftertaste due to the green and red chillies, onions and garlic. For those who can’t take spicy food, try the Chap Chye ($8), a vegetable stew consisting of cabbage, black fungus, dried lily flowers, glass vermicelli and dried bean curd skin in soybean paste sauce. They also have dishes such as Crispy Fried Chicken Wings and Chicken Masala. Desserts such as Burbur Chacha and Chendol are also available. The White Rose Café, York Hotel, 21 Mount Elizabeth, Singapore 228516. Tel: 6830 1156.

According to them, the Tall One (Adam, who hails from Burma), the Fat One (Pio, the chef who has worked for restaurants such as Les Amis) and the Pale One (Eddy, of Korean-Chinese mixed heritage, who creates potent potions at the bar), decided they should “totally open a bar”. Cue, How I Met Your Mother references. Thus the Third & Sixth was born, a mere two months ago. Named after their address, 36 Seah Street, the casual space serves Western food with a quirky kick. With names such as Rings of Cthulhu, Killer Kathoey and Nachooo Libre, it is definitely one of the funniest menus we’ve had to scan through. Plus points for the Nett prices. We loved the No. 36 ($14), a classic 150g beef patty with cheese and bacon strips inbetween two toasted burger buns. All the vegetables are on the side with all their burgers, and the dishes come with a portion of crispy steak cut fries. The Messy Mexican ($14), is topped with flavourful chilli con carne and is

The kong bak pau and siew mai are among the most popular. Teochew Handmade Pau, Blk 127 Toa Payoh Lor 1, #02-02 4. Ho Kee Pau Established in 1994, Ho Kee Pau is a Chinese traditional bun manufacturer which has grown from a small food stall into a food and snacks chain. It has 14 outlets island-wide, including at Ang Mo Kio Hub and Upper Serangoon Road. It sells traditional pau, dim

Tanjong Rhu Pau & Confectionary Perhaps one of the very best and one of the favourites of Singaporeans, Tanjong Rhu Pau & Confectionary’s paus have a soft skin and a juicy, savoury filling. The paus here also tend to be slightly smaller than its peers. There are about three different outlets. While the tua pau (big pau) is not particularly big, it is very yummy. While Tiong Bahru Pau has been around for quite a long time and is also one of the most well-known, some of its paus are good while some could be better. Its char siew pau is one of the best. The main stall is at Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre but there are other stalls in some heartland estates. one of the bestsellers in the house thus far. Great as a side dish to share over a couple of beers. There is only one dessert at the Third & Sixth, the Runny Inside ($8), a dark chocolate molten cake

with a balsamic reduction sauce and a side of vanilla ice cream. This may take up to 15 minutes to prepare, but it is oh-so-worth the wait. A sweet ending to a meal, indeed. Curious churros Newly opened churros stand Churrosity serves up the chewy Spanish dough sticks as well as thick frappes By Cheryl Chia Finding good churros in Singapore is almost impossible. Movie-stand churros are disgustingly stale and most restaurants here do a sub-par job of it. Churrosity saw a hole to fill and started up their freshmade churros stand. Located in a small corner of Holland Village, Churrosity came about when four friends including stall manager Jaime decided to put their love for travelling and churros together to bring the taste of authentic churros to Singaporeans. Jaime says, “We could never find churros in Singapore. The four of us love travelling to the United States and Spain, thus we’ve found a good balance between the churros found in both places and started up Churrosity to let Singaporeans have a taste.” She says that the churros in the USA are more dry than the doughier Spanish ones. They shortened the churro from 15 inches to a more palatable 10 inches ($2.50), and make them from scratch every day. It shows in the crisp outside and soft chewy inside. We also love the bitesized churros ($3.20-$4.90)

that come with a dipping sauce of choice such as chocolate, strawberry and dulce de leche. Churrosity goes through at least “five to six” batches of dough a day. “We have a good mix of expats and locals (being in Holland Village); we get a Spanish teacher that buys churros from us to teach her students about Spanish food. She says that it is much easier than making it herself for her class!” says Jaime. Their frappes ($4.50-$5.20) have novel flavours such as red velvet, brownie chip and Good Morning – banana, caramel and caramelised ginger biscuit. Churrosity also has stuffed churros ($2.90). FAMILY & FRIEND

S

How to be a

Superhero Any dad can be a superhero. Here’s how

You may be wondering right now if it’s worth even trying to be a hero to your child. Perhaps your shortcomings make you feel quite the opposite from a champion. Perhaps your own father has been such a disappointment that you don’t even know how to start being a good father. Don’t give up. If you have a child, the question isn’t whether you’re a father. It’s how you’ll do the job you can’t turn down – and whether you’ll allow yourself to enjoy it. Here’s the Secret ‘Superhero’ fathering is mostly about time and basics. You start doing the fundamentals and keep doing them. And the three fundamentals are: 1. Loving 2. Coaching 3. Modelling

Here’s the Other Secret Do you remember countless parenting discussions over quality time versus quantity time? I wonder if anyone has asked a child, “Do you know the difference between quantity time and quality time with your dad?” I’m sure the answer would have been, “Huh?” Children can’t distinguish between quality time and quantity time. Most adults can’t, either. What we do know is that when there’s little quantity time, there’s not likely to be much quality time. We have to keep our schedules flexible enough that we can enjoy unstructured or unplanned time with our kids. Perhaps we have to learn how to simply ‘waste time’ with them. That doesn’t mean just

These are so basic to fathering that we’ll never outlive learning and practicing them. The thing to note is that none of these parts is optional. We can’t just love our kids and skip the coaching or modelling. Neither can you coach them without loving them. These three basics have something in common. They all require involvement. When it comes to involvement, nobody can take your place. And involvement starts with being there for your child.

Dad being in the same room, by the way. Surfing the Internet on separate laptops two metres apart isn’t quantity or quality time with your child. Spending time means being together, whether you’re planning your next family outing or having a midnight snack in the kitchen. And it’s the steady, smaller investments of quantity time that yield the best results over the years. Adapted from Championship Fathering by Carey Casey. © 2013 Focus on the Family Singapore. s a direct result of the recent rounds of property cooling measures, Singaporeans are now targeting regional and global investment hotspots such as Bangkok instead, as well as more far-flung, exotic locations such as South America due to potential capital appreciation and rental yields, which are predicted to out-perform those from local Singaporean properties. Overseas developers are also flocking to Singapore to cash in on the current boom in overseas property investments. With such increased attention and interest from investors looking to invest

abroad, freehold projects located in premium locations near amenities for work and play have naturally become popular. One such example is premium Thai property Sathorn Heritage Residences, which will be launched by Trillion Property in mid-June. Established in 2011, Trillion Property specialises in marketing foreign residential and commercial projects in the region, and assists business entities with their requirements for commercial and industrial spaces in Singapore. Despite Trillion Property being a relatively new agency, they have

established a strong following for their foreign properties in countries like Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. In addition, they are in the process of establishing regional offices in Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and China so that they can tap on the global real estate market more effectively. To build a strong and credible real estate presence in the region, they aim to deliver up to and beyond clients’ expectations in both residential and commercial space. Their salespersons have over 20 years of experience in the real estate industry, and have received several industrial

accolades throughout their careers. Thus, Trillion Property’s salespersons are familiar with the dos and don’ts of foreign projects, and are able to inform, advise and assist clients on the best course of action for their foreign property investments. Trillion Property has been involved in numerous Thailand property projects such as Sukhumvit Residences, Chateau in Town, The Mark, and The Charm residence. Developed by VCAL Group, a subsidiary of the publiclisted Thailand Factory Group, Sathorn Heritage Residences is a completed freehold condominium

This year’s property cooling measures in Singapore have prompted investors to look elsewhere. Sathorn Heritage Residences may just be the right investment

consisting of 180 freehold residential units. They range from studios to penthouses from Level 17 to Level 38, and those below are operated as the famous Oaks Serviced Apartments. It is not hard to see why this property is generating so much interest among potential buyers. Adjacent to the five-star Anantara Bangkok Sathorn Hotel located in Sathorn Road, Bangkok’s Central Business District, it is five minutes away from the Chong Nonsi BTS. All units are furnished with world class hotel and condominium facilities as it is managed by the same team that oversees Oaks Serviced Apartments. In addition, Sathorn Heritage Residences offers six per cent guaranteed rental return per annum for two years. Trillion Property will be launching Sathorn Heritage Residences on Jun 15 and 16, at Hilton Singapore, Level 5, from 10am to 6pm. If you want a piece of the property pie, remember to come for the launch. W For more information, please visit
