AIG Asia Pacific, one of Singapore’s leading general insurance companies is holding a safe driving competition to put participants’ road driving skills and safety knowledge to the test. Supported by the Traffic Police and the Singapore Road Safety Council, the AIG DriveSafe Challenge aims to promote good driving habits and road safety in Singapore. As participants drive to six locations across the islands
to complete a series of challenges, they will be educated on elements of road safety such as tyre maintenance, drinking responsibly and the dangers of using mobile phones when driving. Then, they will be required to complete related tasks and scored on how accurately and efficiently they complete each task without breaking traffic rules. President and CEO of AIG Mike Raines says, “We launched the
DriveSafe Challenge to remind people to drive safely on the roads and to help break bad driving habits.” According to the Traffic Police, there were 327, 503 cases of road safety violations last year, 3.6 per cent more than in 2011, with an 8.5 per cent increase in speeding violations. “These are accidents waiting to happen,” Raines says. Guest of Honour Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Transport will be flagging off this event, and all registration fees for the Challenge will be donated to the Singapore Road Safety Council in support of its ongoing efforts to improve safety on the roads. In the sixth episode of Apprentice Asia (This wed, jun 26), contestants face the challenge of delivering hospitality services for Hilton KL. Disappointments could result in dire consequences
After the previous week’s challenge of virtual trading over 24 hours, the sixth episode of Apprentice Asia features both teams – The Mavericks, and Apex – managing a part of the Hilton Kuala Lumpur Hotel for one day. They are tasked with housekeeping duties for three rooms, check-ins for three sets of guests, and room service for part of the hotel’s guests. Both teams are sent for training sessions, and receive a folder detailing exactly how the rooms have to look like. Tension Mounts AS MISTAKES ARISE Due to Nash’s past experience in housekeeping, he and Dian run housekeeping. However, he forgets the room keys, and obsesses over the details while cleaning the first room, such that they finish up just before their first guest arrives. Next, they prepared the second room without the housekeeping folder as Dian had mistakenly left it at the front desk. They weren’t ready when their second guest, a Hilton HHonors Diamond Elite member arrives, exhausted and annoyed, for her birthday. Tension mounts as Nash and Dian deal with the situation, with their third guest arriving to a long wait before his room is ready. Bossy Leader Upsets Team Having been a hotel consultant, Celina heads the team, with Sam and Alex handling housekeeping.

Singaporean string maestros T’ang Quartet speak with us on their recent adventure in France

Pulling the
Formed in 1992, the veteran players of the T’ang Quartet – Ng Yu Ying (Violin), Ang Chek Meng (Violin), Lionel Tan (Viola), and Leslie Tan (Cello) – were individually trained in London and Moscow. They have been much heralded in local and foreign press alike over the years. We speak to them about their latest adventure. What has T'ang Quartet been up to lately? Yu-Ying: We went to Auxerre, France for a concert; a collaboration with another quartet (Manfred Quartet) from France, playing great classics like Mendelssohn’s Octet and Brahms’ Sextet! Next up, we will be headed for a concert in Suzhou, China. Lionel: Yes, we went to do a concert in France and immediately after that it was a sprint to the finish line for our mentoring programme – The Ensemble Dimension Project's Highly Strung 2. We featured talented youths performing alongside us in that concert. Who are your musical icons and why? Yu-Ying: There are many great musicians in the world whom I admire and I have been fortunate enough to have either had lessons from or worked with a few of them. But there is only one who has influenced me the most throughout my musical life. He made me believe in myself, even with my limited ability and talent at such a young age – if I truly
right strings love what I do, I will succeed! He is none other than my mentor and dear friend, Mr Jiri Heger. Chek Meng: Though I am a classical musician, my musical icon is Freddie Mercury from Queen. I really admire his energy and sheer electrifying personality. Good music exists in all genres and I really think that people will always remember his songs. What has been the most memorable on the job? Yu-Ying: Well, we were not quite on the job but, rather, on the way. We were travelling in the United States, driving from Boulder, Colorado to Aspen for a two-month residency programme at the Aspen Festival. We stopped at the Independence Pass in the Rocky Mountains to have a quick look and take some pictures. Shortly after, Chek and I continued our drive to Aspen. I lit up a cigarette, smoking as I drove. A few minutes later, I stupidly tried to throw the cigarette out of the window, only to have the cigarette fly right back onto my shirt collar. I flipped out and lost control of the steering wheel and the car went off the cliff! It went tumbling down, rolling over three and half times before finally landing upside-down! Right then,
I had almost killed half the T'ang Quartet! Oh my! Then what happened? Yu-Ying: We ended up arriving at the Aspen Festival in an ambulance. Fortunately, we had only gotten minor bruises, and Chek had gotten a small hairline fracture on his elbow. So, a lot of people at the festival knew and heard about the T'ang Quartet without us playing even a single note! I hope by now Chek's wife has forgiven me. What is the best part of being in the T'ang Quartet? Chek Meng: Best part of being in the quartet is being able to enhance the musical landscape in Singapore. It has been a wonderful journey so far and with every project we have undertaken (be it a concert or imparting our knowledge to the next generation), I would like to think we have enriched someone's life. How has the Singaporean classical music scene changed since T'ang Quartet started? Leslie: There are a lot more local musicians and a lot more performing groups now and there is the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory
of Music – I never thought I would see that in my lifetime. Those are really exciting and wonderful developments. But, on the flip side, many parents still want their kids to pursue a less creative career path. Creativity is not valued in Singapore. We talk about it but many shy away from it. What advice would you have for budding musicians? Leslie: Only you can make the change! Do it now! Don't worry about tomorrow! What would you like to say to all Singaporeans? Lionel: Let the arts add some imagination and enrich your existence. Even a boring performance can be thought provoking. Leslie: Don’t be so focused on material things like money, and don’t be afraid of having an opinion. And, speak up! Chek Meng: Please make art a part of your lives. It’s wonderful that we work hard to provide for our families, but time spent visiting art galleries or attending concerts can bring lots of joy too.
Decidedly pop-based, this self-titled album, Demi, is a really strong album that Demi Lovato has delivered. Demi Lovato has openly shared with us her struggle with her body issues and, in this album, she doesn’t hold back on revealing what most people would consider personal. One would think that all these would result in a vulnerable album, but Demi has successfully spun the tale around and proves it to be anything but. Taking the credit for penning nine out of the 13 songs on her fourth album, I would classify this album as the soundtrack of her triumph over her internal fight. The first single, Heart Attack, is a catchy blend of pop synth and, when brought to life with her strong vocals, shows that she’s come a long way since her Disney days. The follow-up track, Made in the USA, is a summer hit that is easy to listen and hum along to. For the perfect break-up song, look to Without the Love, where she asks, “What good is a love song without the love?” Or, if you’re looking for a glimmer of hope in relationship despair, check out Two Pieces, a moving track about two pieces of a broken heart that fit together. Altogether now: “Awww!” Pay attention to the lyrics,
and you can just picture the rollercoaster of emotions she has undergone throughout her career, from the lows in Nightingale, through the hesitant lyrics of In Case, and in the powerful nonchalance that exudes from Really Don’t Care, the track that features Cher Lloyd. To sum it all up (be it her personal struggles or the album) is the emotionally-charged final track, Warrior. She sings about being a little girl who grew up too fast, having thicker skin, and being stronger than she’s ever been – a song that truly should be the victorious anthem of her career thus far. Perhaps it could also be considered an apt sequel to her comeback single, Skyscraper, in her third album. f style independence is something you are looking for, look no further than local brand Amen. Influenced by subcultures, music, art and lifestyles, their pieces are one of a kind and set you apart from the rabble. Created by Nicole Wong and Clinton Leicester – both graduated from LaSalle College of the Arts – almost three years ago, the brand name came about when Clinton was looking at the screen during Christmas mass and decided that the word Amen would be interesting as a brand name. Nicole says, “We started Amen because we couldn't really find anything we liked out there. Most of the fashion labels were very trend-driven. We wanted to create a label with all our influences combined to form a very distinct style which we like.” It shows in the brand’s Spring/ Summer 2013 collection featuring tailored jackets with paisley and polka-dotted inner linings, highwaisted pants and jumpsuits, and hardware-inspired accessories. Nicole also adds that they do not “really choose a certain subculture”. “We like to design by having a certain theme, then we can infuse our influences into it. So, you have a line with many subcultures coming together with our theme to form the collection, which we feel will keep things fresh,” she says. The pair is also working on an offshoot label called Amen Disciple which will comprise basic wear made of jersey fabric. Amen is currently stocked in Singapore, Indonesia and Canada. “The response overseas has been huge! We are honoured that people around the world like our

Creator Lisa Hilton is a hair and make-up artist who has worked on films such as My Week With Marilyn, Stardust, Downton Abbey and Strictly Come Dancing. In an interview, Lisa relates some of her on-set experiences. “On the film Stardust, Robert De Niro had to be shaven at least three times a day, and then the prosthetics went back on. His face was red and raw, and we needed to cool his skin down. We had to use natural clean products that penetrate the skin quickly but are not oily,” Lisa reveals. She’s also crossed paths with Dustin Hoffman at the Cannes Film Festival on a celebrity beach where she was sharing a show booth with a friend. Lisa says, “At first, I didn’t recognise him but a severely sunburnt man was walking towards us and I realised that it was Dustin Hoffman! We gave him a bottle of water and applied the Calm Balm on him and within a few minutes his skin had really… calmed down. Morrison Bowmore Distillers, one of the oldest distilleries in the world, recently launched three single malt whiskies, Auchentoshan, Bowmore and Glen Garioch Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the first recorded distillery on Islay [pronounced ‘eye-la’] and one of the oldest in all of Scotland. Bowmore Single Malt is acknowledged to be one of the finest and most perfectly-balanced whiskies in the world. Weihanstephan, the oldest surviving brewery in the world
Visitors to Beerfest Asia 2013 were spoiled for choice with over 400 types of beer from around the world, including a variety of unusual brews with fruit and spices. It was pure pleasure tasting these brews which ranged from the traditional, from the oldest brewery in the world, to the contemporary, with rare fruit or other unusual flavours. We highlight some of the best. Limited Edition IPA & Growler Archipelago Brewery Company, established in 1931, was the first commercial brewery in Singapore. Today, it falls within the portfolio of Asia Pacific Breweries. Archipelago's craft beers were the main focus, such as the Belgian Wit, Summer Ale, Bohemian Lager, Irish Ale, and the British India Pale Ale. The Limited Edition British India Pale Ale is the pride of brewmaster Robert Beck. After intense experimentation, Beck has come up with his own version of the popular 19th Century British India Pale Ale first brewed in England. Primary and secondary fermentation add layers of texture and flavour. Apart from a bouquet of orange and citrus aromas and flavours, gula Melaka is also an ingredient, making it even more pleasing to the Asian palate. Archipelago’s 1.89l Beer Growlers, made from ceramic
glass and with a twist-cap, also made their debut. This means more, better beer! new BEER flavours Taiwan Beer and its fruit beer may not be new but newer flavours such as Pineapple and Mango were brought in. Beerfest was the platform to launch its new Grape Fruit Beer and Orange Fruit Beer. Oldest Surviving Brewery It was a lovely surprise to see Weihanstephan beer from Germany. Weihenstephan is the oldest surviving brewery in the world. Its roots can be traced all the way to the mid-8th Century, from the time records indicate that the Benedictine monastery there had been brewing. Some of the Weihanstephan brews imported by Dre@mfields Pte Ltd included the Original Bayrisch Mild, Hefe Weissbier,
FIRST Whiskey Lounge For the first time, there was a Whiskey and Wine Lounge at Beerfest. The whiskies took precedence, with Suntory’s 17-year-old specially-aged Hibiki among the best. Jim Beam’s Red Stag range of also stood out with flavours such as Black Cherry, Honey Tea and Spiced. The Jim Beam Honey, infused with real honey and liqueur, is a very sweet, mellow blend that goes down easily. It also has notes of caramel, oak and vanilla. The recently-launched whiskies from Morrison Bowmore Distillers were also featured, including Auchentoshan and Bowmore. Apart from these, the neverbefore tasted Glenrothes Vintage 2001 was brought in for the first time. interesting CRAFT brews Other interesting brews included a US craft beer with bacon flavour, and an Australian one with chilli. The diversity and interesting range of flavours could be explained by the large majority of craft beers at Beerfest. This means, they were small-batch brewed in limited numbers. The large number of new beers to Singapore was a pleasant surprise, and there are no signs of weariness toward this regional beer festival. We are already looking forward to the next edition.

We loved the refreshing Salmon and Tuna Tartare ($24) with avocado wasabi, toasted sesame seeds and wasabi sprouts. When you think of ballet, what most likely comes to mind is a slender female wearing a leotard and tutu while going en pointe. Or, you might think of incredible flexibility and balance. But, again, you would most likely have pictured a woman. However, men have been in the world of ballet for as long as women have and it is time we gave them the recognition they deserve. Ballet for Men Too The Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) has scholar programmes for talented individuals with a passion for ballet. Lee Wai Hong is one of two male students in the programme. “I started ballet when I was 14 years old after watching the film Mao's Last Dancer. It was very inspiring and, from then on, I knew that this was what I wanted to do,” says Wai Hong. “Don’t think that ballet is
just for girls!” he exclaims. French-born Etienne Ferrère, a professional dancer with the SDT, arrived in Singapore in 2010 and recently starred in their gala showcase. He says, “There are plenty of boys around the world (taking ballet), then and now… but it is very rare in Singapore. Perhaps the number of male dancers will slowly increase over the years.” Culture and Tradition Etienne adds, “I think ballet has been part of the culture of Europe and Russia for very long time, especially since it originated from those countries. The school where I trained at, Paris Opera Ballet School, is celebrating their 300th anniversary this year! So, in comparison, ballet in Singapore is pretty young, and the audience still has a lot to discover.” Both Etienne and Wai Hong feel that the misconception of ballet as a feminine genre is a misplaced perception.

But I think many people perceive it to be something easy – that’s why many young passionate individuals don’t make it to a professional standard,” says Etienne. “It also teaches us to build body and mental strength. This is priceless,” he says. of class where all the fast moves are, including grand jetés – split jumps,” says Wai Hong. “It is rather enriching to have different teachers every day as we are exposed to various styles and we receive many valuable corrections,” he adds. For Etienne, choosing ballet is the best choice he has made. “I'm happy to go to work every morning because I love what I do. I work hard every day to improve myself each time I step on stage. Performing is the best part as all your hard work is channelled to that point,” says Etienne. “To parents and children out there, yes! It is definitely possible to make a living out of being a ballet dancer!” he emphasises. W
The 18th edition of the annual Ballet Under the Stars presents guests artists from Expressions Dance Company in Australia as well as stunning pieces from the Singapore Dance Theatre’s (SDT) repertoire. From Jul 19 to 21, SDT will perform a dazzling showcase of contemporary dance works, featuring guest artists from Expressions Dance Company, and from Jul 26 to 28, SDT will revive the heart-wrenching tale of Giselle. “This year, we’re offering more with two choices in repertoire, and audiences may pick out one or both,” says Artistic Director Janek Schergen. “We will first present contemporary choreography on the initial weekend, featuring collaboration with Australia’s Expressions Dance Company, in a world premiere combining both groups in the same work. The second weekend will showcase the greatest romantic ballet of all time in an outdoor setting present in its full classical version,” says Schergen. Tickets are priced from $20 to $25 and are available from Sistic.

Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines recently operated their first flights with WiFi connectivity on board. The new service will allow customers to remain connected with the world by being able to send text messages and e-mails and surf the internet during their flight. On their in-flight website, they also offer a broad range of free and up-to-date services including live television news and sports channels. Online Access In partnership with Panasonic Avionics, Air France and KLM will conduct a trial phase throughout the rest of 2013 on two Boeing 777-300s. During that time, customers can connect to the internet using their WiFienabled smart phones, laptops or tablets at a fixed rate and use their mobile phones for text messages or email, no matter what travel class they are in. The two WiFi-equipped aircraft will operate on several long-haul destinations during the trial.
Fares During the pilot phase hourly and full-flight fees for WiFi are €10.95 per hour or €19.95 for the full flight, applicable for all classes. These fees are in line with the industry average. Travellers can pay for their internet access by credit card. Mobile phone usage (for text and data) will be billed to the phone users according to their own roaming agreements. Access to the in-flight website will be free. Wireless service — whether the on-board portal or satellite internet — will commence once the flight has reached 20,000 feet, shortly after take-off. Customers’ experience With the in-flight connectivity test, Air France and KLM are adapting to their customers’ new travel habits, while surprising them with new services. During this test phase, customers will be asked to share their comments, suggestions and expectations and thus contribute to the improvement of these services.

6. Eat authentic Kimchi Probably the most well-known Korean dish in the world, kimchi dates back to the Shilla Dynasty. It is a must-have spicy side dish, made by salting and preserving fermented cabbage in pepper, garlic, ginger and scallion. Why get kimchi there when you can get it here? Korea Festival in ASEAN held in Singapore The Korea Festival in ASEAN is aimed at broader cultural exposure. Recently, Singapore was privileged to host two different concerts of high musical quality The Korea Foundation is hosting the Korea Festival from May 16 to Aug 23 in the countries of ASEAN, where the new global economic power lies. This Korea Festival held in ASEAN aims to introduce Korea to ASEAN nations through a comprehensive programme of diverse activities, including cultural and academic programmes and bilateral forums.
Recently, two events were held in Singapore in the month of June as part of this cultural festival. Seoul Chamber Society, comprising acclaimed soloists, performed selected quartet, septet, concerto and other beautiful pieces on Jun 5 at the Esplanade Recital Studio. Ensemble SINAWI also presented an original form of traditional Korean music that combines the earthy essence of Korean folk music, a shaman style of improvisation and pansori, together with a smart, edgy, contemporary jazz approach on Jun 10 at the SCO Concert Hall. The show drew an audience totalling 450 music lovers, and the ensemble group SINAWI also received accolades and encores for their performance. The Korea Festival continues in other parts of ASEAN and with other programmes across the other Southeast Asian countries.
