SPORTS Will Wayne Rooney be back at his best with his former boss as the new United manager?
What will Jose Mourinho achieve in his second stint in the English Premier League?
& entertainment Unfamiliarity
The Special One is back
With all the excitement of the new Premier League season, it still doesn’t quite feel the same. Power 98FM DJ Elliot Danker tells us why By Elliot Danker
I love the managerial rivalries in the English Premier League because it’s like the father of the family picking a fight with his opposition and, let’s face it, we’ve had some pretty entertaining rivalries over the years. However, we’re looking at a very different managerial battle. In the past, the headlines used to be hogged by Sir Alex Ferguson vs. Arsene Wenger. Then, Jose Mourinho arrived on the English stage and he provided loads of entertainment. While his rivalry with Ferguson was intense, there was always a slight respect for him. By this time, Arsenal had begun to fade. Of course, there was a fierce rivalry between Rafael Benitez and Fergie, which many Liverpool and Manchester United fans will remember. That provided lots to talk about each time the press built up to matches between the two. That is gone as Benitez has left the Kop. Roberto Mancini arrived three seasons ago, made an impact, had a few clashes with Fergie, but was asked to leave so unfairly. Which brings us to the new season of the Premier League that’s on the horizon, in just over two weeks. Now, there’s no Alex Ferguson. He’s retired. Arsene Wenger has lost steam and is slowly fading. Mancini and his ridiculous comments are gone but we have Mourinho back.
Goodbye to a legend
The Portuguese manager is definitely going to entertain with his unique quotes and arrogance, but who will he pick on? David Moyes is now in charge at United but he’s not the type to tell reporters off or to poke managers in the eye. Manuel Pellegrini is in at Manchester City and looking to make an impact, yet the English league and culture are new to him. I foresee him taking a cautious approach. In a season of unfamiliarity, many predict a power shift in the top teams. You can expect loads of entertainment and I’m sure that Mourinho will find someone new to pick on.

rides on Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski of Pirates of the Caribbean fame embark on a new adventure together: The Lone Ranger. A thrilling adventure infused with tonnes of action and humour, this big screen remake of the classic television series has the masked hero brought back to life on the big screen. Tonto Meets The Lone Ranger Native American warrior Tonto (played by Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (played by Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice. The audience is taken on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes, the Lone Ranger and Tonto, learn to work together
The Lone Ranger and Tonto make their way onto the big screen in this new incarnation
to fight greed and corruption. A Legacy Reborn The classic characters of the Lone Ranger and Tonto remain enduring fixtures of the American cultural landscape 80 years after they first rode into the public’s imagination. “There’s something about these characters that have appealed to every generation since they were invented,” notes producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “I grew up in Detroit, and The Lone Ranger radio and TV shows were part of my youth, and millions of others as well,” he says. He continues, “We knew that it

was time for The Lone Ranger and Westerns to be reborn just as Gore and I knew that it was time for pirate movies to be resurrected when we first developed Pirates of the Caribbean for the screen a decade ago.” Set for a Summer Hit After more than seven months of long and arduous filming across the United States, the cast and crew went through a multitude of environmental and production challenges which they overcame to make this film. Verbinski says, “You’re going to be surprised by the movie, because everybody knows that story, and that’s not the story we’re
telling. We’re telling the story from Tonto’s perspective, kind of like Don Quixote, told from Sancho Panza’s point of view.” “I would say that at its core, our version is a buddy story and an action-adventure film with a lot of irony and humour and enough odd singularity to make it distinct,” he says. FASH SNIPS Here are stirrings in the fashion world that you would want, need and love to know about
Alchemy: Tortoise Gold
A Love for Frames Hence, the creation of Mystic Vintage started by three friends Alvin, Jason and San. Alvin and Jason have been wearing frames since they were very young and San used to play with her mum’s sunglasses when she was a child. They love hunting for vintage frames, and over time, started to appreciate vintage frames for their manufacturing quality and experimental designs. Since then, Mystic Vintage has launched their own designs that are influenced by vintage frames, each with a different theme such as Lullaby, Control, Thunderdodge, Alchemy and Sorcery – the latter two being part of the Magic series. Inspired by 1980s Fantasy Their latest collections include Alchemy, which features brow line glasses (a style of eyewear invented in 1947) with acetate nose bridges, angular temples and alchemic colours, and Sorcery, sporting gentle curves and diamond studs. Both have their own quotes such as “Power of rot, obscuring
truth, what once was old restore to youth!” and “You have no power over me” engraved in the temples of the eyewear. “Alchemy and Sorcery were inspired by the movie Labyrinth and ‘80s animation series Visionaries. Both are magical films which had characters singing melodic spells and using ethereal powers of sorts. Our favourite quote, ‘Dance Magic Dance [from Labyrinth]’, is engraved on one of the frames,” say Alvin and Jason. Local Pride They currently have stockists in Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong. Mystic Vintage is in the midst of designing five new models and launching a frame called ‘Flinders’ for a fashion trade show. The trio encourage locals to support their brand. They say, “Be proud of our home-grown labels as much as you are of our chicken rice!” Mystic Vintage is sold at the Blackmarket No. 2, Leftfoot Entrepot, Tyrwhitt General Company and Workshop Element. A break-up may just be the best thing to happen to a band
Meet Paramore version 2.0 By Sonja Steinmetz Paramore has been around for almost ten years, which is incredible considering all its members are still under 30. And, just like in any long relationship, there comes a point where you ask yourself if it’s still working. Post-Break up For founding members and brothers Zac and Josh Farro the answer, six years in, was, sadly, “No.” They left the band and many fans as well as industry insiders thought that that had spelt the end of Paramore. But a break up doesn’t always have to be the end. In this band’s case, they took two years to regroup, re-evaluate and have come back stronger than ever. Streamlined Band Yet Long Album With their fourth, self-titled album, “Paramore”, their musical growth is more than evident. I was expecting a less-impressive, perhaps thinner, sound now that they are two members short. They have proven me wrong. You can rock just as hard, if not harder, moving from a five-piece to a threesome. Fans of the band will welcome their return after a four year hiatus. And they will not be disappointed. With seventeen tracks, the album clocks in at sixty minutes exactly, and many songs luxuriate at a generous four or five minutes.
voice is a force of nature. Honestly, I can’t think of any other female lead vocalist of a rock band right now that comes even close to her skill and talent. Although petite, she’s got powerhouse vocals and lets them rip. On Still Into You, Now and Fast Car, her voice is bold, unapologetic and more than matches up to the hard-thumping drumming of Taylor York (who also plays bass) and Jeremy Davis’ skills on guitar. But Paramore is not all “whambam-thank-you-Ma’am”. Fans of Paramore’s softer more tender side will enjoy Hate to See Your Heart Break and the bittersweet yet soaring track (One of Those) Crazy Girls. Also, check out the three acoustic interludes which run under two minutes each that offer some respite from the hard rocking. Start your day with DJ Sonja Steinmetz on The Power Breakfast Show, together with Hubert Tang and Jamie Yeo, on weekday mornings from 6am-10am, on Power 98FM.
About Sonja Steinmetz A huge fan of cats and Ryan Gosling, DJ Sonja Steinmetz of Power 98 has mastered the art of functioning fully on just four hours of sleep, but doesn’t recommend it.

In our hot and muggy weather, sunglasses have become even more of a necessity as well a fashion statement. There is a fair share of funky frames, colourful lenses and even appliqué on the frames lately, but old school seems to be making a comeback. How about taking that to another level with good old-time class?

Mouth-watering
The Aussie-style Porchetta
Sunday Roasts:
Korean restaurants are plentiful but Bornga serves a mean menu of barbecued pork dishes that will make your mouth water
Aussie Style
End the week or start it with a Sunday Roast at Intrepid Gastro Bar. It is great roasts for great value By Cheryl Chia If you’ve been to Australia or watched enough television programmes, you’d know that Sundays are typically days where family and friends gather around roasting large portions of meat. Intrepid Gastro Bar at Far East Square tries to recreate that same meal with quality cuts and meats. A Feast of Roast Husband and wife owners Rommel and Michelle started Roast Lamb
the joint with the full intention of never letting anyone “leave the restaurant still hungry”. Every first Sunday of the month, they have a full-blown Sunday Roast with a soup, three choices of meat to choose from, three side dishes and a dessert for the reasonable price of $29.95. The roast changes according to seasonality but diners can expect dishes such as a succulent Premium Aussie Leg of Lamb – crusted with green peppercorns, rosemary and a garlic rub – an Aussie Style Porchetta stuffed with apricot and mild pimentos with sage brown butter, or a Roasted Free Range Hen with butter tarragon and burnt lemon. The porchetta was smoky and fatty in the right places with crispy crackling on the top of the roast. Our only gripe was that the crackling was uneven, probably because the bottom of the roast was sitting in its juices. The Roasted Free Range Hen was incredibly tender as well. For Sharing One of their sharing platters is a Broiled 200 Days Australian Angus bone-in rib-eye with grilled corn salsa, grilled lemon, braised root vegetables, bourbon mustard and béarnaise sauce. To feed three to four people, the medium-broiled steak is tender and well seasoned. Intrepid Gastro Bar also has Kangaroo Sliders ($18) with prosciutto ham and truffle aioli and onion relish, as well as a Kangaroo Loin ($38) with glazed peaches, if you are adventurous. It tastes somewhere between beef and venison.

part from hearty stews, street food, and soju that Korea is known for, Koreans also have Gogigui. It’s basically Korean barbecue, and is often prepared at the diners’ tables with inbuilt grills. At Bornga, the meats are grilled right in front of you, which adds to the sense of anticipation as you watch them slowly turning invitingly brown. THE NIBBLES The appetiser was water kimchi, which was cold and spicy, with crunchy radish bits. I liked the vegetable salad as the sesame oil made the sweet, tangy sauce fragrant. There is a wide assortment of banchan, or side dishes for diners to choose from. They also provide ten varieties of fresh vegetables for you to wrap the meat and kimchi. WINSOME GRILLED PORK We started off with Mansinjang Samgyupsal ($24 per 200g), which was tenderised pork belly with parsley flakes, salt and pepper. To be honest, this dish was a little plain and forgettable.
Fortunately, the Yangnyum Dwaeji Galbi ($33 per 250g) was more promising. They changed the grill to a copper one to ensure more even cooking, and the pork ribs marinated with a special house sauce were soft, tender and succulent. The highlight of the night had to be their signature dish, Woosamgyup ($28 per 200g), featuring Chef Paik’s patented recipe of thinly-sliced US beef short plate seasoned in Bornga secret marinade. Chef Paik is a renowned celebrity chef in Korea. This beef brisket was doused in sauce just before it was grilled, which apparently enhances the traditional bulgogi taste. It was bursting with flavour, and amazingly delicious. MORE YUMMY DISHES They then served the Dwaeji Gohchujang Barbecue ($36), where spicy pork slices are grilled, and then stir-fried with spring onions and served with leek on a hot plate. This is a dish I felt had personality - it had a distinctive taste, and the caramelised onions had me going for seconds. Next up was the Bornga Bulgogi ($45), a yummy bubbling hotpot with beef fillet, vegetables and glass noodles which made for a
Chef Jeff Mauro, a highly humorous guy, makes a charismatic host. He was in town to show us plebeians how to turn a plain old sandwich into one fit for a king. Not Just a Sandwich Jeff, the winner of Food Network Star Season 7, believes, “You can make any meal into a sandwich, and any sandwich into a meal.” This rang true with his demonstration at the Asian Food Channel studio at Orchard Central last Monday. Sandwich Tips “Apart from a handsome guy with great hair, you need good bread to make a sandwich. If your bread is bad, doesn’t matter what is in between. It is not going to be

The more spicy dishes were served at the end, with the sixth dish being Sundubu Jjigae ($18), a tofu stew. It is put together and cooked in the serving vessel, with a raw egg added before serving. The seafood soup was full of ingredients such as tofu, egg, scallops, and clams. Its fiery red

The last dish, Yukgaejang ($20) was a fiery beef soup with shredded beef, scallions, bean sprouts and glass noodles. I picked the first one I saw and, guess what I got…” he says with a laugh. Other sandwich Tips He also tells us his must-have item in his refrigerator – Dijon mustard or dijonaise. “Dijonaise is an emulsifier for oil and vinegar. It is great when

He also spreads the dressing last on the sandwich. “You know how you take a bite out of a sandwich and everything shoots out the sides? That’s what happens when you put the sauce on first. Everything just slips out,” he says. In the new season of the Sandwich King, Jeff will reinvent classics like the Italian sub and concoct dessert sandwiches to satisfy your sweet tooth. INTERESTING TIDBITS: International styles and variations of Biryani British biryani Biryani was brought into the UK by primarily Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrants and is served in the Sindhi biryani style with their common use of yoghurt recipes. Spices are toned down a lot from the original versions and, in most of the restaurants, one has to ask to boost spices to achieve the original effect.
Burmese biryani Biryani is known in Burmese as danpauk or danbauk, from Persian, dum pukht. Featured ingredients include cashew nuts, yoghurt, raisins and peas, chicken, cloves, cinnamon, saffron and bayleaf. In Burmese biryani, the chicken is cooked with the rice. It is often served at religious ceremonies and luncheons.
Thai biryani In Thailand a goat version is eaten almost exclusively by the Muslim population. Along with Thai Massaman curry (Musulman Curry) and satay, it is one of the most notable Muslim Thai dishes.
Sri Lankan biryani Biryani was brought into Sri Lanka by the South Indian Muslims who were trading in the Northern part of Sri Lanka and in Colombo in the early 1900s. It was popularly called 'Buhari' Rice by the native Singhalese. In many cases, Sri Lankan biryani is much spicier than most Indian varieties. Side dishes may include achar, Malay pickle, cashew curry and ground mint sambol.

Iranian beriani During the Safavid dynasty, a dish called Berian Polo was made with lamb or chicken, marinated overnight – with yoghurt, herbs, spices, dried fruits like raisins, prunes or pomegranate seeds – and later cooked in a tannour oven then served with steamed rice. In its more original form, in some cities the dish is known as dam pokht or dam-
Indulge in a local delight this weekend. Try nasi biryani at these places Biryani is a hearty rice dish that’s popular around the island, comprising a rich curry and refreshing achar. Here are a few options you can try. Bismillah Biryani Restaurant Specialising in authentic Hyderabad biryani, the rice is full-flavoured with the scent of spices but feels lighter due to the absence of oil or ghee. The owner cooks his rice and meat over a charcoal fire with additional charcoal pieces on the top – the traditional method. 50 Dunlop Street, Singapore 209379 Blue Diamond Restaurant The basmati rice here is evenly coated with masala and comes with a hardboiled egg. The restaurant’s dishes are fairly cheap, with good portions. 24-26 Buffalo Road, Singapore 219791 Islamic Restaurant Around since 1911, this is one of the oldest biryani places around. Though the service can be a bit brusque, the food here is fairly decent. 745 North Bridge Road, Singapore 198713 Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine For 15 years, Jaggi’s has been serving

pokhtak. The compound in Persian means "steam-cooked"—a reference to the steamed rice that forms the basis of the dish. This name is still in common use in Iran alongside "beriani". In the central Iranian city of Isfahan, Berian is made with cooked mutton or lamb, which is stewed and minced separately, and then grilled in special small round shallow pans in an oven or over a fire. The meat is generally served with powdered cinnamon in a local bread, usually "nan-e taftoun", but also occasionally "nan-e sangak".
Kasturi Biryani Dam There are a few well-known names for biryani in Geylang Serai market. The rice here is cooked in the Indian way with spices and some pandan leaves for more fragrance. The accompanying chicken resembles ayam merah more than curry, which is refreshing. Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre, #02-158 Bokhara Biryani & Kebab This place doesn’t use any ready-made spices or preservatives in its cooking and all the spice blends for the biryani and accompanying meats are made inhouse by their own chef. nly two and a half hours away, I had a short yet enjoyable vacation in Kota Kinabalu. Here are some of the highlights. Fantasy Island I spent four glorious days in my own ‘Fantasy Island’ resorts on Gaya Island off Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the state of Sabah in East Malaysia. Fans of the long-running TV series, Treetop walks and high-altitude Fantasy Island, trails abound will remember the charming reef on Pulau Gaya, just off Kota island host, Mr Roarke, played Kinabalu. Raya Island Resort Spa are worth splurging on. A 15-minute ride from Kota Kinabalu International Airport brings you to Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal for another ten to 15-minute boat ride to either of the resorts. You can choose to stay in any of Gayana’s 52 villas over water or in one of 48 villas at its sister property, Bunga Raya Island Resort & Spa, tucked away in the Borneo rainforest. They are ten minutes apart by speedboat. The crystal clear waters around the resorts teem with marine life. We were drawn to the magic of the corals, clams and various

fish species swimming in the turquoise blue sea beneath. The villas at Gayana sit on stilts above the water. Nature and Adventure The rainforest on Gaya Island is rich in biodiversity. In our 45-minute trek, we saw tropical hardwood trees and the infamous tongkat Ali tree, which our guide referred to as the “Viagra tree”. We spotted the Russell Pit Viper. Thankfully, the villas are built on stilts to deter the snakes from entering. The jungle is also home to hornbills, monkeys and lizards. While there, we caught a
glimpse of a hornbill and came up close to a giant lizard. A flying squirrel ‘joined’ us when we were having dinner at one of the resorts’ outdoor restaurants. To our amusement, a family of ‘tame’ wild boars also passed by but snubbed us. If jungle trekking is not your cup of tea, try scuba diving, snorkelling, zip-lining, kayaking, canoeing or jet skiing. Book a nature or adventure tour package from any of the hotels, resorts or local travel agents in Kota Kinabalu. Food, Glorious Food Jesselton Ferry Terminal Point has a row of cafes and restaurants. I love the fresh fish at Alu Alu Café. We chatted with Chef Khiong who runs the kitchen there. A casual Chinese café-style restaurant and one of many makan places in the jetty area, Alu Alu Café stands out for serving mostly fish dishes – about 30 different varieties. The fish
Triumph over Adversity Chef Khiong’s story is an inspiring one of triumph over adversity. In 2010, he had an accident that left him wheelchair bound. “We continued to involve him in all aspects of the kitchen and the rest of the staff was very helpful in accommodating his needs. He has done amazingly well and is such an inspiration. He handles everything from purchasing, hiring, quality control, new menus... You name it, he does it,” said Tan. After the accident, Tan and her family, who also own the Gayana and Bunga Raya resorts, had ramps installed so that Chef Khiong could come to work. Mari Mari Cultural Village First-time visitors to Kota Kinabalu should visit Mari Mari Cultural Village, featuring the ethnic homes of Sabah’s different tribes as well as demonstrations of life in the days of headhunting. From blowpipe demonstrations to the art of making honey and starting a fire, there are ample opportunities for you to click away. You can also watch or join in a cultural dance performance. Sabah is truly a gem on the Borneo coastline. It is impossible to cover all of this “Land Below The Wind” in one visit, so Kota Kinabalu is a good start. There are direct flights between Singapore and Kota Kinabalu at least ten times a week. W

In a country where being perfect and efficient is almost a religion, the aspect of customer service seems to be lacking in Singapore, a new survey with local customers, tourist and service staff reveals. However, tourists visiting our city ranked Singapore’s customer service as above average. Do we as Singaporeans have high expectations of our own country? It certainly seems so with 56 per cent of local customers indicating that service staff could “go beyond the call of duty” to make their service experience more memorable. About 60 per cent of those surveyed considered service in Singapore acceptable. Whereas, a much higher 74 per cent of tourists thought that Singaporean service was “above average” with almost half of that saying that service in Singapore was better than in their home country – in Asia, the United Kingdom or the USA. service staff attribute the service disparity to demanding customers, with 73 per cent and 64 per cent of managers and service staff saying that increasingly demanding clientele is the main barrier to delivering good service, although most of the local clientele did not view themselves as part of the issue. More than half of the managers surveyed also highlighted that finding the right staff proved an obstacle to providing good service. The survey also showed that service staff felt that positive appreciation and compliments also added to the service experience. The survey was carried out by market research group Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) to get better insight on the service debate in Singapore. With a representative sample size of over 460 participants, the survey was conducted earlier this year over a period of one month. The survey is supported by the Go the Extra Mile for Service (GEMS) Up project, a joint movement involving SPRING Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency, the Institute of Service Excellence at the Singapore Management University (SMU), and the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
“Service is a deepseated topic in Singapore and is often at the core of many conversations and experiences,” says John Conceicao, Executive Director, Singapore Tourism Board and GEMS Up representative. “Businesses today are changing and owners are faced with multiple challenges such as manpower and evolving customer needs. The survey allows us to analyse the different perspectives and identify the missing link when it comes to elevating service standards in Singapore,” he says. “It also presents a stark picture to the industry, and highlights a need for businesses to urgently improve their customer experience journeys so as to remain competitive,” he emphasises.
THOUGH the PSI reading has now improved considerably, one should still take precautions, especially the elderly, pregnant, and those with lung or heart disease. The PM2.5 particle level is still worrying. You should wear a mask for your own protection. RESPIRATORY MASK (N95) Haze particles are mostly 2.5 microns or smaller (PM2.5), and N95 masks are specially-designed to filter out 95 per cent of fine particles that are about 0.1 to 0.3 microns, as well as some non-oil based particles. Replace the mask with a new one when it becomes dirty, or distorted. This ensures the mask you are using is effective. As N95 masks are designed to seal one’s face such that the air one breathes in has to go through the filter and not through the gaps between the mask and the face, it is important to wear the mask correctly to be well-protected. Visit the Health Promotion Board’s website for a step by step guide to wearing the N95 mask. There are a few models including the 3M N95 Respirator 8210 with soft nose foam and adjustable nose clip; the 3M N95 Respirator 9210 that comes in a flat-fold design for easier storage and a soft cover web on the inner panel that provides greater comfort; and the 3M VFlex N95 with a filter design and V-shaped pleats for even greater comfort and breathability. This new mask will be retailing from July. Some other N95 masks include the 3M 1860 which is often used in healthcare institutions; the 3M 1860s, which is similar to it except that it is for smaller faces; the 3M 8110S, which is similar

to the common 3M 8210, also for smaller faces; the Dräger Piccola FFP3, a cone-shaped mask for better fit and the Kimberly-Clark 46727, which is pouch-style, with a large breathing chamber. Do note that N95 masks have not been certified for children’s usage, so it is advisable for them to stay indoors when the PSI levels are high. Women in the second or third trimesters of pregnancy should not wear the masks for extended periods. N95 masks are NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in the USA) approved, and are available in pharmacies and stores such as Unity, Guardian, Watsons, NTUC and others, and in hospital pharmacies, hardware stores and 3M authorised safety suppliers. SURGICAL MASK The type of mask worn by medical personnel to prevent the spread of viruses, many people wore this mask during outbreaks of the SARS virus. Like paper masks, surgical masks are not effective and do not adequately filter out haze particles. You can also visit this website at www. ilovedeals.sg/home/ where-to-buy-mask to find other places where you can obtain a mask.

one of the songs I’ve just finished.
What strange or interesting experience have you had in the course of work? For my last video, I had to stay up all night in an abandoned mall in North London and get attacked by zombies until 6am.

ewly appointed as ambassador for the mobile app Line, Choi Si Won of Super Junior shares with Weekender about his latest projects and other thoughts. Are you a person that has to stay connected via social media? I update my status via social media all the time. I enjoy being on social media. My status updates on Line, for example, are usually about the new places, countries or cities that I visit and sometimes even the different types of food that I try whenever I travel. If you check my timeline, it’s just filled with pictures!
What do you like about Line? Super Junior has recently launched Line Official Account. Through that, news on Super Junior is provided in real time. Also, the best part of it is that we can talk to our fans one-on-one when we are in ‘On-Air’ mode. When the ‘On-Air’ light is on our account, it means that we are actually messaging to our fans. We are planning to go ‘On-Air’ sometime soon, and looking forward to have more interactive conversation with Singaporean fans. What is in the pipeline? Super Show 5 is happening in Singapore in July! All the members are putting every ounce of their energy to prepare for the Super Show. I hope many Singapore fans are looking forward to it! You're a singer, actor and model. Which do you prefer? From the very beginning, I had this ambition to become both a singer and an actor. While chasing these two paths, my modelling career just followed. Picking just one of them will be difficult.
Any memorable moment on the job thus far? I think it must be the first stage debut as a Super Junior member. I can still clearly remember how loud all our fans were screaming Super Junior and my name!

Emmy the Great enchanted guests with her music and soothing voice
Which has been your proudest moment? I think the first time we played the John Peel stage at Glastonbury. It was the reason I got into music.

What makes you happy? Art makes me happy. And I mean art as even like movies, TV and anything that is an expression of something. I weep my way through a lot of trash.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know. I have many different facial expressions. In fact, I have funny expressions and a playful side of me. I believe that my fans have recently started to notice the humorous side of me.

If you weren’t a singer, what would you be? Internet police.
What makes you happy? My family and fans. Those who drive me to go further are the very reason for my happiness and the reason for my existence.
The House of Häagen-Dazs is a new platform to convey the premium ice cream brand’s philosophy of luxury, experience and superior craftsmanship. The launch of this premier lifestyle concept took place in the penthouse showroom of bespoke furniture designer Christopher Guy. There, UK-based singersongwriter Emmy the Great performed an intimate gig for the invited guests. The guests were privileged to be the first to hear Emmy performing her brand new single, Swimming Pool. It is her first new song to be made public in three years. This performance was an enticing taste of her third album. Many were captivated by her soothing voice and heartfelt lyrics. Weekender managed to
What would you like to say to your Singaporean fans? Thank you so much for supporting my work and for being the greatest fans to Super Junior and myself… I hope to see you soon; ‘til then, take care and stay awesome. Love you guys! Any advice for budding singers or actors? If you do something with honesty and steadiness, the efforts you show will draw and move fans’ hearts. Always be thankful and modest, and try to give back love that the fans have given all the time, and then you will become famous without realising it. W
By Chia Hui Jun & Lester J Wan sneak in a short interview with this Brit siren. How did you get into music professionally? I’m mainly someone who enjoys music and I was always a writer growing up. I started trying to write songs in my late teens, partly inspired by the British punk bands that were totally s*** but didn’t care. Then I made a very basic demo in my room and it hit the Internet. Who are some of your musical influences and inspirations? Joe Strummer, Kathleen Hanna, Sleater Kinney, any s***-hot woman with a song. What are you currently working on? I’m right this moment working out a treatment for a music video for
