rocery shopping is a weekly or even daily affair for most families, and you are constantly being bombarded by different brands purported to have better quality. Here are some products that have been household names, and that you should be using in your home. Cook with better quality and improve the diet of your family with these products.
Golden Peony Rice is a staple in most Asian diets, which helps us maintain the required sugar levels for the body and also provides vitamins and minerals and eight amino acids. Introduced to Singaporeans in the 1990s, Golden Peony rice is produced from the North-eastern fields of Thailand, where the land is the most fertile. Golden Peony Premium Thai Hom Mali Fragrant Rice carries a silky smooth texture with a fluffiness when cooked and carries a subtle pandan fragrance. The rice is packed in Thailand immediately after milling to preserve its freshness. It is certified “Grade A” under Thailand’s stringent fragrant rice grading system. Golden Peony Thai Hom Mali Rice is only harvested once a year from the fields before it is rested until the next year. This will ensure that the fields are not depleted of its nutrients. With a fertile field, the rice that it yields is naturally of top quality as well. After harvesting, the rice undergoes a strict cleaning and drying process before being stored under highly-controlled conditions. The temperature and humidity is kept at optimum levels to adhere to stringent quality conditions. The average length of a Golden Peony rice must not be less than 7mm and the average width cannot be less than 3mm. The grains are always whole and the moisture content does not exceed 14 per cent. From now until August, with every purchase of a bag of 10kg Golden Peony Thai Hom Mali Rice, consumers are entitled to a free bottle of Liushen Fresh & Fair Shower Cream worth $8.50. Liushen Fresh & Fair Shower Cream combines the efficacies of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the best of modern technology for a unique shower experience. Golden Peony is available at all major retail outlets. Harmuni Vegetable Oil Deep fried food is always a treat and a comfort food. This method of cooking can be made healthier with Harmuni Vegetable Oil. Harmuni Vegetable Oil uses 100 per cent high-quality palm olein. The oil is naturally free of cholesterol and it enhances the flavour in deep-fried dishes to suit Asian taste buds. Soyalite Soyabean Oil If you prefer soya bean oil, try Soyalite Soyabean Oil. First introduced to our shores in 1988 and made of 100 per cent pure soya beans, it is enriched with polyunsaturates. Soya is one of the most nutritious foods in the world that is high in protein, rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre. Soyalite Soyabean Oil also contains Omega-3, for even more health benefits and can even be used as a light salad dressing. Soyalite Soyabean Oil is also suitable for stir-frying, deepfrying and does not leave an oily aftertaste. Both are available at all major retail outlets.
These great products are mustbuys, and are available at all major supermarkets
Sobe Soya Milk Also derived from the healthy soya bean, Sobe is the very first brand of fresh, pasteurised soya bean milk introduced to Singaporeans. Soya milk is a source of protein, isoflavones and different types of Vitamin B. It is also suitable for people who are lactose intolerant and it is cholesterol-free due to its plant base. It is rich in taste and is still a favourite with the young and old. Add a glass of soya bean milk to your breakfast for a healthy start to the day! Sobe Soya Milk comes in a one-litre pack and is available at all major retail outlets. W

“The dramatic bits of the movie occur toward the end when it reminds the audience that the events occurred were real...” PAIN & GAIN [M18] Director: Michael Bay Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Tony Shalhoub, Ken Jeong and Rebel Wilson Genre: Action, Drama, Comedy Run Time: 130 min Release: Aug 1

et in the 1990s, where the more muscle you have is a reflection of how manly you are, three Miami bodybuilders try to milk a milliondollar client of his property and fortune. Matters quickly deteriorate into chaos, distress and even murder. All brawn, No… Based on the saga of the Sun Gym Gang, reported in a series of articles in 1999, Daniel Lugo (played by Mark Wahlberg) attends a motivational seminar. The Hangover’s Ken Jeong plays the motivational speaker, who has Daniel’s ego pumped up even more than his biceps. Daniel then gathers his two beefy pals, Adrian (played by Anthony Mackie) and ex-convict Paul (Dwayne Johnson). The trio then plot to kidnap Victor Kershaw (played Tony Shalhoub, who starred as ‘Monk’, in the TV series). Victor is a man so mean that you’ll feel no sympathy for him. Beefed Up Laughs Hijinks ensue as they try all ways and means to make him hand over his wealth. This leads to

comedy, but eventually tragedy as well. With Rebel Wilson as Adrian’s wife, Ed Harris as a private eye and Bar Paly as the men’s stripper friend, the movie is set up for hilarity and gratuitous sexy shots. The babe factor is certainly there. Sobering End? The dramatic bits of the movie occur toward the end when it reminds the audience that the events occurred were real and, ultimately, that the initiallylovable protagonists are actually messed up characters. Director Michael Bay [known for big-budget, action-explosion movies] takes a step away from his usual razzle dazzle productions such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and Transformers. Pain & Gain is a much lighter movie with loads of punch lines and fewer big explosions [though there still are] albeit with a sobering end. Close-up shots of bikini-clad bums make this film more attractive. W

Poppy Montgomery of Without a Trace returns in a new crime drama
A new crime thriller, Unforgettable, will premiere on Lifetime, on StarHub TV Ch 514, from Jul 29. Poppy Montgomery, formerly of the popular TV series Without a Trace, returns to star in this new drama series. Photographic Memory Poppy Montgomery stars as Carrie Wells, an enigmatic former police detective with a rare condition that makes her memory so flawless that every minute detail – every place, every conversation, every moment of joy and every heartbreak – is forever embedded in her mind. It's not just that she doesn't forget anything. She can't forget anything, except for one: details from the day her sister was murdered years ago. Since then, Carrie has tried to put her past behind her. Nonetheless, her unique ability, known as Superior Autobiographical Memory, makes her remember every other detail and part of her life. Suspenseful Pilot In the pilot episode, Carrie relies on her flawless memory to make a living as a gambler in New York City after leaving the police force in Syracuse. As she struggles with her impeccable memory’s blessings and curses, she experiences a shocking event. Her neighbour’s murder reunites her with an ex-boyfriend, Detective Al Burns (played by Dylan Walsh of Nip/Tuck), when she consults on the case. Al convinces her to join the New York Police Department (NYPD). Al’s squad includes his right-hand man, Detective Mike Costello (Michael Gaston), Detective Roe Saunders (Kevin Rankin), the junior member of the team, and Detective Nina Inara (Daya Vaidya), a sassy, street-smart cop. Thrilling Ride Being back on the job after a break feels surprisingly right for Carrie. Despite her conflicted feelings for Al, she decides to permanently join his unit as a detective solving homicides – most notably, the unsolved murder of her sister.
The stunning Poppy Montgomery, famous for her role in Without a Trace, is back
Viewers can expect to be taken on a thrilling ride, with no stone of her memory left unturned. Now, all she has to do is to remember the day of her sister’s murder. Easier said than done. Unforgettable starring Poppy Montgomery premieres on Jul 29, and will be on Mondays at 9pm on Lifetime on StarHub TV Ch 514. Lifetime is on free preview for a year.

The high-octane sleeper hit, Red, returns with a bigger bang Action-comedy sequel Red 2 follows retired CIA black ops agent Frank Moses (reprised by Bruce Willis) as he reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing, next-generation lethal device that could change the balance of world power. The Path to Success The team needs to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and powercrazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the technologically-advanced super weapon. This mission takes Frank and his motley crew to Paris, London and Moscow. Outgunned and
By Sonja Steinmetz outmanned, they only have their wits, old-school skills and one another, as they try to save the world and not die in the process. Killer Instincts Frank has happily settled down with Sarah Ross (Mary-Louise Parker) but Sarah gets worried about things getting stale between them as he hasn’t killed anyone in months and she comes up with a plan to mix things up a little so that their lives will be filled with adventure, romance and danger — things they can experience together as a couple. “Frank is ill-equipped to handle a basic relationship and Marvin is only too happy to dispense advice on how to make a relationship work; yet there’s a good chance Marvin knows nothing about the subject,” says Willis of his character. His old partner, Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich), and the couple get dragged into a whirlwind as
a next-generation weapon — Nightshade — from the Cold War that went missing on Frank and Marvin’s watch has apparently resurfaced. MI6 has given Frank and Marvin’s buddy, deadly sharpshooter Victoria (Helen Mirren) a contract to eliminate the duo. In addition, a corrupt US official is sending another contract killer, Han (Lee ByungHun), after them. This is music to Han’s ears, since he has an old score to settle with Frank. Along the way, they encounter Frank’s old flame Katja (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and try to save themselves and the world. Soundtracks are often my favourite part of a movie. The best scene is made even better when just the right piece of music is played. Julia Roberts getting dressed in Pretty Woman, the pottery scene from Ghost, and Joseph-Gordon Levitt’s character bursting into full-on choreography in a park in 500 Days of Summer are all moments in film made iconic through the music that was used. Luhrmann the Iconoclast A master at choosing just the right songs for his films is Australian director Baz Luhrmann. He challenges our expectations and doesn’t follow the rules. That’s how you get Radiohead and The Cardigans in a Shakespeare movie [for Romeo + Juliet], and Pink, Li’l Kim, Maya and Christina Aguilera in 19th Century Paris
[for Moulin Rouge]. With The Great Gatsby soundtrack, Luhrmann has assembled a motley group of talented musicians. A Great Mix A great advantage of soundtracks is that you get a variety of artistes on one album, from pop superstars to indie left-fielders and everything else in between. With the film set in the roaring 1920s, a time of extravagant parties and lifestyles of excess, the track “100$ Bill” by executiveproducer Jay-Z builds a lyrical bridge between New York in the 1920s and the present day by quoting Colin Powell, Malcolm X, the stock market crash of 1929, 9/11 and Taylor Swift, virtually in one breath. Some of the Best Representing the heart-wrenching turmoil and soul-crushing longing evoked by the film are tracks from
Florence and the Machine (“Over The Love”), Jack White (“Love is Blindness”), The XX (“Together”), Sia (“Kill and Run”) and the movie’s epic love theme, “Young and Beautiful”, by Lana Del Rey. “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” by Fergie, Q Tip and Goonrock and “Where the Wind Blows” by Coco O. of Quadron are also guaranteed to get you bopping along. Start your day with Sonja Steinmetz on The Power Breakfast Show, together with Hubert Tang and Jamie Yeo, on weekday mornings, 6am-10am, on Power 98.
About Sonja Steinmetz A huge fan of cats and Ryan Gosling, DJ Sonja Steinmetz of Power 98FM has mastered the art of functioning fully on just four hours of sleep, but doesn’t recommend it.

If you love a good bottle of wine to go with excellent food, you’ll love Napoleon Food & Wine Bar. Every single bottle of wine here is categorised in a special machine according to flavour profiles, making it as easy as shopping for clothes. The Enomatic Wine Dispenser machine has descriptions such as “smooth”, “fruity”, “spicy” or “sweet”. This is much easier to understand than regular wine menus which go by grapes and region. Apart from their array of wines, Napoleon also serves some great grub. The three-course set lunch is a good deal at $32 with several choices of appetisers, mains and desserts to choose from. Drinks are also included within the set lunch. For smaller eaters, a two-course set meal is also available. We loved the Poached Salmon. The tender and fresh salmon
sat atop a pea puree and a white wine sauce, accompanied with mushrooms and tomatoes. The beef tenderloin had a hint of spice to it, with very creamy and buttery pureed potatoes. Thumbs up for this. The desserts on offer were also excellent. Try the Lemon Tart – the crust goes all around the tart, protecting the gooey lemon curd filling within. Mmm... We also tried the profiteroles. The dark chocolate-coated choux pastry was sweet but not cloying. Outside of the lunch set, we also loved the Lamb Shank Parma Tier ($22), a shredded and juicy lamb shank with a bed of pureed potatoes on the top. It is almost like a shepherd’s pie, but much better. Cocktails such as the crème de menthe Grasshopper and red wine-based drinks are also available. Napoleon opened recently, in June.

rego has been in the Singapore food scene for the past two decades, serving up hearty Italian cuisine. They have now revamped their Sunday brunch buffet with 40 traditional Italian dishes in Pranzo Italiano [Italian Lunch]. Chef de cuisine Antonio Facchinetti injects the Italian sensibility of la dolce vita [the sweet life] into his well-thought out dishes.
From the antipasti bar to the inviting ambience to new menus, Prego has the recipe to keep bringing diners back
Rich Pastas We loved Chef Antonio’s Strozzapreti with Spiced Sausage in Tomato Sauce. The homemade pasta seemed almost udon-like in the tomato sauce and was well complemented with the spiced sausage. The Gnocchi Prawns, Pesto Cream Sauce was a slight disappointment with the potato dumplings being a little too soft and mushy. Also try the Risotto with Smoked Pancetta and Saffron. The richness of the risotto was paired well with the smoked pancetta.

pansies” ($9). There is an array of fillings to choose from such as carnitas (pork), pescados (fried fish), carne asada (seared beef), pollo ascado (grilled chicken) and the barbacoa (oven-braised lamb). Choice of Carbs You can select your choice of carbohydrates from rice, refried beans or black beans. There is also an assortment of salsas and sauces to choose from. Personally, I could easily finish the 12-inch Silver Bullet but Elson says that he even has trouble finishing the Burritino due to the heavy starch content. My dining companions also struggled with it.
Burritos for any meal Burrito joint Muchachos opens its doors on Keong Saik Road By Cheryl Chia
You’d be hard pressed to find good and easy-to-eat burrito joints in Singapore but they are getting ever easier to find. The latest burrito joint to join the fray is Muchachos on Keong Saik Road. Started by Jonathan Yang and Elson Lee, the casual dining place has seen a non-stop flow of customers since they opened earlier in the month. Bountiful Burritos The burrito, as we know it, was actually created in San Francisco and not in Mexico. The burritos at Muchachos come in two sizes: the 12-inch Silver Bullet ($12) and the Burritino, a ten-inch burrito for the “womenfolk or nansy-
Tasty Tortillas The tortilla is first steamed before being stuffed full of your favourite fillings. This keeps the tortilla soft to the last bite. I loved the carne asada [seared beef] with the salsa de pina [pineapple salsa] with guacamole and sour cream and, of course, the rice and beans. However, I did feel the rice was a little bit lacking in flavour for my taste. They also have Chicharrons ($6) as a side dish. Not exactly Mexican, but who cares when it is so good? The crunchy, deep-fried pieces of pork rind with sweet chilli sauce are deceptively light; you almost forget you are eating pure fat. Muchachos, 22 Keong Saik Road, Singapore 089129

An Extensive Range Apart from an extensive cold cuts and anti-pasti section as well as a pristine seafood counter, you get to choose from the 40 main dishes on the menu and the staff bring it to you all prepared. Do try the cold prawns. The sweet prawns were firm and oh-so-fresh; we polished off several plates of this. We also liked the sashimi and oyster counter as well. The cold cuts include Mortadella ham and prosciutto di Parma that come alongside canellonis. The cheeses aren’t labelled so it is best you ask for help just in case you end up with one that’s way too strong for your taste.

The origins of
Yong Tow Foo Mr Chong Yik Hwee, the founder of Gao Ji Food
Yong tow foo is one of the classic local Singaporean dishes. The founder of Gao Ji Food shares with us its origins essential during the Chinese New Year season to bring good fortune, they started to stuff fillings into bean curd to replace the dumplings. Hence, the creation of the dish we know today. Mr Chong says, “For traditional Hakka yong tow foo, the Hakka people used the ‘oily-tender’ pork stuffed into ‘salty-aromatic’ bean curd. To bring out the taste and fragrance, the older generation
Hakka yong tow Foo has been around in Singapore for a very long time. Gao Ji Food pioneered its popularity in Singapore since the 1960s. Gao Ji is better known by its dialect name, Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo Mee. Mr Chong Yik Hwee, the founder of Gao Ji Food, shares with us about its origins. Origin of Koo Kee & Yong Tau Foo From a humble background, Mr Chong had to stop his studies in order to help his mother at the family’s yong tow foo stall when his father fell ill. Today, Mr Chong now manages eight gourmet brands with over 50 outlets island-wide. Yong tow foo is a food of Hakka origin that has been passed down from generation to generation. The Hakkas are a group of “Han” Chinese originally active around the Yellow River area and have a staple diet of dumplings. After migrating South-ward, they found it difficult to get flour for the dumplings. However, due to the belief that dumplings are
“...they started to stuff fillings into bean curd to replace the dumplings.”
Decadent Options Foie gras fans, rejoice! The panseared foie gras is also available for order. You get two good-sized pieces of foie gras accompanied with figs and fig sauce. The dessert counter was a bit of a let-down but surprisingly the dark chocolate macarons were decadent and a sweet end to the meal. The tiramisu was not halfbad either. of Hakka people used pork neck meat and salty fish for the filling to make it chewy.” Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo Mee To keep up with the times, Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo Mee, has changed the minced meat topping for their noodles from pork to chicken to make the dish healthier. “Apart from that, our recipe has remained the same for the past 60 years. Our customers are still served a standard bowl of five different items – tau hu (soft white bean curd), tau kuah (firm bean curd), tau pok (deep-fried bean curd), tau kee (bean curd skin) and fishballs with a bowl of noodles,” says Mr Chong. “These items are usually paired with our very own secret recipe of sweet sauce or chilli sauce,” he adds. From a humble zinc and wood stall next to Majestic theatre to the thriving enterprise it is, the humble hawker dish of yong tow foo certainly has a rich heritage. Gao Ji or Koo Kee is one of the pioneers of Yong Tow Foo in Singapore

Stretch those

By Cheryl Chia
P
ilates has been around since the early 20th Century and has spawned different disciplines and schools of thought but all have the same principles of strengthening the core and improving spine alignment or posture. This exercise is also good for pre and post-natal women. Created by Joseph Pilates [say pee-lah-tehs], the most commonly heard and easily accessible form of the exercise is mat Pilates, but there are many other forms of Pilates that make use of various equipment and accessories. They are easily available in Singapore as well. We test drive a few of these to learn what it is all about. For more information, do contact the respective centres.
Photos: Breathe, Focus Pilates, Pilates Bodytree, Pilates Inc & Powermoves
Breathe This smaller studio is restricted to about five students per group class for the reformer beds – a spring assisted bed. The instructor gives each student individual attention and corrects the posture of the student during class lest they do the movements wrongly. The beginner classes work on breathing, stretching exercises and movements on the elevated reformer. We like the small amount of people in the class as you get the adequate amount of attention from the instructor. They also offer Barreworks – a ballet barre workout – at their East Coast branch.
Focus Pilates
Pilates Inc
With two studios in the central area, Focus Pilates focuses on reformer Pilates to help stretch the muscles that you could neglect during mat Pilates or your regular gym routine. The instructor explains thoroughly what you should expect and teaches the correct breathing techniques before the reformer class starts. Classes are relatively small, so you have adequate attention from the instructor. Focus Pilates also offers one-to-one physio-Pilates for those with injuries.
Also on Amoy Street, this studio offers a one-of-a-kind Rocking Reformer class. Before the start of any class at Pilates Inc, you get a proper assessment of your posture, spine and musculature. The Rocking Reformer is great for achieving balance and helps pinpoint which muscle you tend to rely on more with each move you make, forcing you to use the muscles that you do not normally engage. It can make you a little seasick but you do feel you muscles working to steady the Rocking Reformer.

Pilates Bodytree This studio in Amoy Street focuses on their Fletcher Fusion classes that make use of a ballet barre as well as a braided towel to assist during exercises. If you love a deep stretch, this class is for you. You start off at the barre with some stretching exercises before moving on to the braided towel. The towel acts as a form of resistance to help keep arms apart while working out. Finally, you end with some floor-work. Also try their Spine Corrector classes that make use of Clara’s Barrel to help promote a flexible spine.

Ladies, travel smart
in India
I
ndia has been in the news for the wrong reasons recently, especially on the threats to women’s safety. All women travellers going to India should take strong precautions.
Here are a few tips for you to improve your safety: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Legoland Water Park to open in Oct You can head to the new Legoland Water Park, to be open soon, For the year-end school holidays By adrian eugene seet The largest Legoland Water Park, spanning ten acres, will open in Johor on Oct 21. This means the Legoland Water Park will be open in time for the next year-end school holidays. The Water Park is an extension of the Legoland Park which opened on Sep 15 last year. All-New Rides & Sections Featuring more than 20 slides and over 70 Lego models, two restaurants, private cabanas for rent and a retail store, Legoland Water Park will be a new water wonderland that is ideal for families with children from two to 12 years old. To date, the Legoland Water Park is 70 per cent completed. Visitors can look forward to the BuildA-Raft River, where soft Lego Bricks are used to customise your own raft before floating down a lazy river. Meanwhile, the Joker Soaker is an interactive wade pool that lets children play with water cannons as a Lego jester model 'tells' jokes, and 350 gallons of water pour down upon them. Expansion of the Theme & Park The Legoland Water Park can be enjoyed on its own or together with the Legoland Park. The day
pass pricing will be announced at a later date and you have the option to purchase a day ticket to the Legoland Water Park, Legoland Park, or both. A premium annual pass priced at RM$395 for adults or children will be offered for entry into both the Legoland Park and Legoland Water Park throughout the year. Existing Legoland Park annual pass holders can upgrade to the Premium Annual Pass. More details will be available on Legoland Malaysia's website at a later date. Legoland Malaysia will further expand to include a Legoland Hotel, scheduled to open in early 2014. It will then be an integrated Legoland Malaysia Resort. The Legoland Hotel building has already been built, and all 249 rooms will be Lego themed: whether “Pirate”, “Kingdom” or “Adventure”. Opening Hours The Legoland Park and Legoland Water Park will operate from 10am to 6pm daily, with longer opening hours during the weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Head down with the family during the next school holidays for a fun and creative time.
Book a taxi or auto-rickshaw with your hotel for transfers. Don’t go out and get one on your own. Try not to go out after sunset. It is harder to see potential danger and there are more unsavoury characters lurking after dark. Behave as though you have a hotel and you have friends in India, even if you don’t. If taking a taxi or rickshaw, request to be dropped off at hotels or in public places. Ensure the door to your room has a bolt, and perhaps even a stopper, in place at all times. This helps to deter intruders and to protect you.

FAMILY & FRIENDS
Dealing with Teens Part TWO Here is the second part of a series of questions and answers on teenagers
Answer:
By playing musical beats together, BEAT’ABOX unites people of all ages By Cleon Ong
Our teenager has been spending all his time with friends, and he’s never available to take part in family activities. What should we do?
Relax. A good portion of your teen’s behaviour is part of a normal developmental process called “separation and individuation”. (continues below)
Between the ages of six and 12, a child’s need to identify with his peer group starts to take precedence over his [or her] sense of identification with parents and family. This continues through the teen years and usually concludes with complete separation and independence by age 18 or 21. To resist this natural pulling away only hinders growth and creates unnecessary tension in the household. You can make your teen’s transition from childhood to adulthood smoother and more navigable if you keep the following suggestions in mind:
Reassess Your Own Motives First, as difficult as this sounds, you need to reassess your own motives. Is it possible that you have selfish motives for wanting your child to stay close to you? Do you have a hidden emotional need that you’re expecting him to fulfil? Are you afraid of letting go and seeing him make mistakes on his own? If so, you need to realise that these are your problems, not his. Once you’ve settled these questions, you need to find a
Beat’a box
beats the blues
Do you find it hard to understand your teenager at home? Here is a question on teenagers in relation to the family, with some answers from Focus on the Family.
Question:
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
way to embrace and affirm the shift that’s occurring in your teen’s outlook. In other words, allow for separation while simultaneously helping him realise that he’s wanted at home too.
Positive & Healthy Since his peers are so important to him, you should start thinking in terms of encouraging him to develop a positive social life and to form healthy friendships. You can’t actually pick his friends for him, of course, but you can increase his chances of making good choices by shaping his environment. Help him to get involved with a group that gives youth guidance. Urge him to take part in volunteer trips, sports, or other constructive activities.
Host Friends Another way to exert a measure of positive influence in this area is to host activities for your teen’s friends. For instance, you could organise a
weekend barbecue. This will provide you with a window into your teen’s peer group as well as a discreet and relaxed opportunity to chaperone his interaction with friends. You might also encourage him to invite friends to take part in your family events. While there’s certainly a place for “family-only” activities, there’s no reason why you can’t have additional outings of a more inclusive nature. He’ll be less resistant to family outings if you tailor them to be more attractive from his point of view.
when we see someone playing an instrument, we may feel compelled to move to the beat and enjoy the good music. From the sweet strains of serenity from an acoustic guitar to heart-pumping beats of drums, music is for everyone, regardless of differences. Easy for the Elderly As youngsters, it is easy for us to pick up a new instrument as we have the energy and the time. Yet, it’s different for the elderly. They may find it a challenge learning to play a new musical instrument due to their old age. Although some are genuinely interested in learning a new instrument, most of them never had the opportunity to pick one up. Beat’a Box has created an opportunity for that. Aiding the Old By getting youths to teach the elderly how to play the Cajon, people of all ages will be able to play it as one. Through teaching and using simple terms in guiding
the elderly, it also helps to break down the communication barrier between the youth and elderly. Playing in a group setting also improves interaction among the two age groups. Giving Youths Confidence But more than just bridging the two age groups, Beat’a Box wishes to boost the self-esteem of these youths, enabling selfempowerment. By cultivating and building their confidence, Beat’a Box wants the youth to believe they are capable of bigger and better things. Often, youths who have wandered down an undesirable path are lacking in self-confidence.
With encouragement, they will feel capable of achieving much more. Great Joy & Challenge Helping these youths can be both a great joy and a challenge. Even after coming up with a plan to help them, things may not be smooth sailing. Each part of the process may be challenging. Nonetheless, with faith and determination, the people at Beat’a Box believe that they can work through anything, no matter the hardship or setback. This is indeed a quality that aspiring social entrepreneurs must have; believing that all you have set out to do is for a better tomorrow. Coming up, The Cajon Society is holding Singapore's First Cajon Festival, with the aim to bring 1,000 youths together to make 200 Cajons, that will be donated to eldercare centres. This will be a fun and exciting event. Don’t take our word for it, check it out for yourself! Beat’a Box is located at 2 Orchard Link, ‘Scape Level 4 HubQuarter, Singapore 237978
