even years ago, the creator of ladies wear Stolen started the label as a pet project while she spearheaded her team as Creative Group Head in advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather. Since then, Elyn Wong has struck out on her own to concentrate on fashion and to inject her sense of sexy into her backless sartorial creations with her own label.

Bringing

sexy back

Creative Juices “I felt that I needed an outlet to fuel my creativity. I first started designing for myself and I’ve always had a preference for backless details. It is edgy but yet not overtly sexy,” Elyn explains. She adds, “The label grew quickly, so I quit [my job] in 2012 to concentrate fully on Stolen.” Backless dresses transition from day to night easily. You can achieve this by throwing on a simple jacket. As to why Elyn mainly focuses on a backless style, she says, “Every woman wants to feel sexy, but not everyone likes a plunging neckline.”

You’ll be swept away by local fashion label Stolen’s signature backless creations

Up & Coming Stolen has since taken part in fashion weeks in Paris, Fashion Coterie in New York, and even been involved in art installations, resulting in an avant-garde merge of Stolen’s sensibilities and installation art.

Elyn is also currently working on a series of bralets as well as non-backless pieces for her upcoming collections. For women who wonder about the right kind of bra to wear with a backless dress, Elyn advises either silicon bras, a nice bra with a simple back or a bikini top. “No beige or transparent straps, please!” she emphasies. A Real Steal Her art inspiration strongly shows in her Resort 2012 line that features softness and fluidity juxtaposed against strong structural shapes, with hard clean lines that dramatically give way to reveal the soft back of a woman. The prices of the pieces range from $149 for a top to $329 for a dress. Stolen’s online store will be launched in the next few months and is currently stocked in places such as The Black Market, W Hotel Singapore and TwentyTwenty9. She also has stockists in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Malaysia. So far, Stolen is proving popular among working women in their 30s. W Visit www.stolenstolen.com for more information.

Taking the bull by its horns

Bull & Butcher's unique Mixed Grill

Meat lovers can rejoice with prime cuts of tender meat that will make you salivate. We tackle them head on

Experience new Asian fine dining and tapas Asian cuisine is given a fresh update in this new restaurant and tapas bar

Alaskan Crab Shooters

Pan-seared grade 9 Australian Wagyu beef

By Cheryl Chia

By Cheryl Chia Bull & Butcher is a good ol’ traditional steakhouse that opened in Plaza Singapura less than a year ago. It serves tender cuts of meat while you sit on booth seats covered with real cow hide. Talk about not letting any part of the cow go to waste. Petite Cuts are Popular Bull & Butcher specialises in the Petit Tender ($28 for 160g) or Beef Shoulder Tender which lies below the more popular Flat Iron Steak cut. It is cut from the sixth-most tender muscle of the cow. It is second only to the tenderloin fillet in terms of flavour and delicacy. Jacco Klip, CEO of Trilogy Hospitality, who opened Bull & Butcher and the upcoming Vogue Club, says, “Discovered in 2010, the Petit Tender has remained relatively unknown as it requires a skilled butcher to extract it. We have a great relationship with our supplier who will be exclusive to us. So those who want to be the first to try it will have to do so at the Bull & Butcher!” Meat, Meat & More Meat We loved the Petit Tender for its

lean and, well, tender texture. This cut is not listed on the menu, so do ask the waiter about it. Diners who prefer soft, melt-inyour-mouth meat would love the Braised Australian Wagyu Beef Cheek ($38). Its gelatinous yet quickly-dissolved meat comes atop a bed of mash potatoes and gravy. They also serve chilled seafood as well as other meats such as the Duck Breast, Orange ($28) and Australian Lamb Cutlets ($48). Side dishes are priced at $8 each and comprise a good mix of vegetables, as well as fried bar bites such as onion rings and potato wedges. Sweet Tooth Indulged For dessert, the Bull & Butcher has Note Di Sicilia Gelato ($8) – artisanal gelato from Quayside Isle – as well as a to-die-for Pear and Chocolate Crumble with Vanilla Ice Cream ($12), and a Banana Toffee Pie with chocolate sauce ($12). Prices stated are excluding prevailing taxes.

Mantou Burger with Braised USDA Prime Beef

N

estled in the newly-revamped Suntec City is a chic and sexy lounge that almost passes off for a mere bar. But, step into the corridor lined with stone statues holding candles and you’ll reach the fine dining area of LÈ Restaurant and Asian Tapas Bar. The cavernous space encompasses a lounge and a 212-seater dining area with several private dining rooms.

Your entry must include a recipe, the picture of the dish, and these particulars: • Name • NRIC • Home Address • Telephone Number Last day of Submission: 30 Sep 2013 Sponsored by Topseller Pte Ltd

Chic Cuisine Apart from Asian-inspired cocktails such as the Fiery Empress – a feisty cocktail with lemon juice, egg white, tequila, chilli padi and curry leaves – their tapas selection does not disappoint. We loved the Braised Cherry Foie Gras with Red Wine ($26). The foie gras terrine is poached in red wine and cherry jus and plated to represent cherry globules. We also liked the Mantou Burger with Braised USDA Prime Beef ($16), their version of kong bak bao.

More Surprises LÈ Restaurant Asian Tapas Bar also carries pristine seafood such as the Alaskan Crab ($10, with a minimum of two orders) – a refreshing mix of crab meat, grapefruit cubes, cherry tomatoes and sesame dressing – and a Coral Trout Poached in Lobster Broth ($16 per 100g and $28 for the broth). Power 98 Music Review

Singapore’s award-winning film at the Cannes Film Festival opens in cinemas this weekend

Ilo Ilo:

A Singaporean story

Getting gooey over

Goo Goo Goo Goo Dolls are back, doing what they’re best at: offering easylistening tunes for the masses By Charmaine Phua

The Goo Goo Dolls have been around since I was born, in 1985, and I’d say they have been one band that has remained true to themselves over the years. Their 10th studio album, Magnetic, dishes out a catchy pop-rock sound. Definitely not

as mellow as everyone’s old favourite, “Iris” but, nonetheless, just as attractive.

MAGNETIC Honestly, I approached the album with apprehension but was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to fall in love with it from the start. Lead singer, John Rzeznik, was asked to come up with a one-word title for the album. The first word that he could think of to describe it was “magnetic”, and it certainly lives up to its name. A STRONG START The first single, “Rebel Beat”, is a great choice to kick off the album on a high note. A feel-good track with a likeable chorus, Rzeznik’s vocals suit this summer anthem really well. This is followed with “When the World Breaks Your Heart” and “Slow It Down”, which are both very radio-friendly. THE NEW IRIS I wasn’t as impressed by “More of You” and “Last Hot Night”, a prominently patriotic song, but I fell in love with the haunting

quality of “Bulletproofangel”, a slow yet intense track. This could very well be the “Iris” of this album, with an aching chorus that sticks. “Keep The Car Running” is a good choice to listen to if you’re feeling down and out – with a strong message to “just keep holding on”, just as the band has over the past 28 years. If this album is anything to go by, I’d say they’re definitely keeping up just fine. Tune in to Charmaine Phua on Eats & Entertainment as she shares her love for food and movies, on Saturdays from 5pm-9pm, on Power 98FM.

About Charmaine Phua Charmaine Phua is Executive Producer / Presenter of Power 98. She used to listen to “Iris” on repeat, while stuffing her face with pints of ice cream, just like everyone else… Tune in to her on Power 98FM.

that charmed Cannes

O

n May 27, a film called Ilo Ilo made cinematic history by becoming the first Singaporean feature film to win a major prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Ilo Ilo and director Anthony Chen claimed the coveted Camera d’Or prize at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. The news of the win rapidly made waves throughout Singapore, and stirred greater interest. Now, the highly anticipated award-winning film is finally opening in cinemas in Singapore.

her presence in the family worsens the already strained relationships. Nonetheless, Jiale, the young and troublesome son, starts to form a unique bond with Teresa, who soon becomes an unspoken part of the family. The film boasts a small but impressive cast including veteran TV actor Chen Tian Wen, acclaimed actress Yeo Yann Yann of 881 and other films, and Filipino actress Angeli Bayani who has gained international recognition for her films.

A Familiar Scenario? Ilo Ilo is Director Anthony Chen’s feature film debut, after eight short films. Ilo Ilo revolves around the story of a Singaporean family in 1997, which was the beginning of the Asian Financial Crisis, and their newly-arrived maid, Teresa. Like many other Filipino women, she came to Singapore in search of employment and a better life. Unfortunately,

Unexpected Actors At the recent press conference, last week, it was revealed that Yeo getting pregnant prompted a panic and that Chen was even in discussion to replace her. Yeo reveals that she convinced Chen that she could still do the job and that her bodily appearance would not change too much. “I told him that even though I am pregnant, my body will still remain the same,” she laughed.

Super Nanny

shows the way

It would be easy to believe that our kids are a lost generation but “Super Nanny” Jo Frost lights the way

Many parents today feel that they’re doing a worse job than their own parents did, and some even believe that they’re failing their kids. But are they? Get Talking Jo Frost, of Super Nanny fame, believes she just needs to get parents talking again and sharing what they know. Through a series of case studies and exciting experiments, Jo is setting out to prove that we are good parents: we just need to get talking again.

Gripping Episodes In each episode, Jo meets different parents who have problems with their kids. She stays with the families to observe how the parents interact with their kids, and advise or encourage them to change certain methods of handling their kids. For example, in the first episode, Jo has seen footage of Kiran’s mother, Sophia, trying to force feed Kiran. She knows that she wasn’t watching someone who wanted to be unkind; it was just someone who was utterly desperate to get her child to eat. In the past, Kiran had been sent to hospital with dehydration and Jo could see that, every meal time, Sophia was scared that Kiran would have to go to hospital if she didn’t force Kiran to eat something.

Chen laughed and acknowledged that she was so convincing that he decided to keep her in the cast. Another revelation was that Koh Jia Ler, who makes his film debut playing the young boy of the family, was not actually selected for the auditions. Apparently, he had snuck in to have a look when he followed his friend. Providentially, he ended up auditioning and got the role. Ilo Ilo is presented by the Singapore Film Commission and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and is produced by Fisheye Pictures. It is distributed by Golden Village Pictures in Singapore. W Ilo Ilo [PG13] Director: Anthony Chen Starring: Yeo Yann Yann, Chen Tian Wen, Angeli Bayani and Koh Jia Ler Genre: Drama Run Time: 100 min Release: Aug 29

killed by a reckless driver. He recalls, “In a fit of terrible road rage, I had gotten out of the car to argue with this guy, and my wife pulled me back. When we got back in, she turned to me and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we all had one free one a year?’ I thought that was such a dark thing to say... but it stayed with me for a very long time.” Kill or Be Killed Although James starts out as a flat protagonist, as the film progresses, he becomes much more complex. Hawke was eager to tackle the role. He says, “At its core it’s about how, in the name of providing for your family, you can turn a blind eye to your ethics.” “James Sandin sees himself as the perfect guy. Then, he finds out that he’s actually out of touch with everything; things are much more complicated than he was envisioning them,” says Hawke. The Purge (NC16) Director: James DeMonaco Starring: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey and Adelaide Kane Genre: Thriller Run Time: 86 min Release: Aug 29

Super Nanny’s Recommendations Jo would then recommend certain changes. For Kiran, Jo had to put the basics in place: 1. Routine meal times • A rule that meals would only last for half an hour and that anything Kiran hadn’t eaten would stay on the side for half an hour but if Kiran still hadn’t eaten it, it would go in the bin. • A total withdrawal of all sugary snacks and sugary drinks • Mum and Dad to lead by example and eat together around a meal table 2. Taking Sophia to the park with Kiran Jo needed Sophia to relax around Kiran and around Kiran’s meals, and she also needed to put something fun and positive in place to counterbalance all the new rules around meal times and to rebuild their relationship. Going out and hanging out in the park, and looking at the animals, was a really nice experience. It helped Sophia to relax and allowed her to eat a picnic lunch with Kiran without fussing and panicking. It was good for her to learn that when she’s having a meal she can just be quiet; she doesn’t have to talk and fuss about food all the time. In this new relaxed environment, Kiran got on with it and ate her lunch. Tune in to catch more useful tips from the one they call the Super Nanny. Jo Frost airs every Wednesday on Lifetime, Starhub Ch 514, at 8pm.

“a lady just went through a messy break up and didn’t want me to put down...”

DJs Michael and JK of the new Night Drive, week nights, 9pm to midnight

NEw power-stars

AT POWER 98FM

Power 98’s DJs have been making waves on local radio. Don’t miss out on the liveliness and hilarity of their shows

I

f you’ve not heard of them yet, it’s time you do. DJs JK, Mike and Sonja of Power 98FM have been making waves and are poised to be the next generation of radio superstars. Just tune in to their shows, and their words and antics are sure to amuse you and brighten your day. The following is an interview with these Power 98 DJs, to give you an idea of what you’ll be in for.

Michael (right) and Sonja (centre) with Shareen Wong

What has been going on for you, apart from your show? Sonja: Getting ready for the two Ts in my life that I can’t live without: Theatre and Travel! I just booked my tickets for a girls’ trip in November to Margaret River in Perth where I'll be enjoying another love of my life, good wine. As for Theatre, I'm getting ready to start rehearsals at the end of the year for a fantastic play called "Firecrackers and Bombshells", which will be running at the Arts House in Jan 2014. Mike: Loads of exciting stuff. What most people don’t know is that there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes. An example would be producing Radio Box Office on Power 98 – a segment where I preview and review new movies every week. DJs are also hired as hosts and emcees for various events which are always fun to do. JK: Work is 24/7! If I'm not on air, I'm

usually hosting events, producing segments, trailers, commercials or thinking about the show and how to make it better all the time. What’s new for you at Power 98? Mike: I’m now hosting a brand new night show with my awesome co-host, JK, called The Night Drive and it’s been such a blast talking about real issues that people on the street talk about all the time, from dating and relationships to current affairs, all with great singalong music to boot! JK: I have to admit that co-hosting with Mike is quite literally an absolute breeze! I can be myself with no pretentiousness or fake personas; we get each other and whatever that goes out on air is 100 per cent honest, down to earth and real. Who is your musical icon? JK: My mum. No matter how terrible her singing is, she isn't afraid to take on the microphone and hog it every time the karaoke machine at home is turned on. Confidence man, confidence. Mike: I’d have to say that the one

person I’ve always looked up to in music is Jason Wade, the lead vocalist of Lifehouse. Not only is he possessed of pure, raw talent that includes singing and writing music, he’s also incredibly down to earth and keeps it real. Total champ, in my opinion. Sonja: Having to pick one group or artist is like asking a parent to choose a favourite child. Each artist or group fulfils a different part of me. A few names that come to mind are Blur, Portishead, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, The XX, Radiohead, Elvis Presley, The National, Jamiroquai, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West, The Rolling Stones… aaah, I can't stop! Which song would you sing in the bathroom? Mike: Hands down, it’s gotta be Adele’s “Someone Like You”, probably ‘cause the acoustics in the bathroom make me think I could actually hit those incredulous notes. Then, I towel off and realise that I can’t hold a tune to save my life. Sonja: Good bathroom songs are ones that are super intense and emo with some shout-y parts that feel super shiok when you belt them out. “Wide Awake” and “Fireworks” by Katy Perry, “Whadya Want From Me” from Adam Lambert and “Ode to My Family” by The Cranberries are some of my faves. The acoustics in the bathroom mean you can really let it rip on these songs. Sorry, neighbours! :)

If you had a time machine, when would you go? JK: Back to a time when my dad was still alive. I lost him six years ago to cancer. Too many of us neglect the simple things in life, like cherishing a loved one and having them around you. Mike: Haha, I’d go way back to Ancient Greece ‘cause I’ve always been fascinated by Greek mythology, their governance and way of life, and perhaps the chance to run nude into battle. Bet the ancient Spartans had a field day fighting for their lives and comparing the length of their... swords. Sonja: New York, June 2008. I was living overseas at that time and lost someone I loved very dearly back home that month. Being able to tell them everything that I didn't get the chance to then would be indescribable. What do you love about Power 98? JK: We're down to earth, personable, and we play more of the songs you love. Sonja: I’ve been given the opportunity to learn and grow so

much thanks to the guidance of the team. Plus, we love each other so much we even hang out outside the office! Who does that?!?!?! I really love them to bits and thank my lucky stars that I ended up with this bunch of likeminded crazies. Mike: Power 98 was the first radio station I ever listened to when I was 13 years old and the way I felt the first time I turned the radio on is still very much the same all these years later. We may be perceived as the underdog sometimes so our success with listeners is simply ‘cause we put in all the effort and hard work. That’s what I love, and am most proud of this. W Catch DJs JK and Michael as they co-host the new Night Drive, on week nights, 9pm to midnight. DJ Sonja hosts The Power Breakfast Show on weekday mornings from 6am to 10am; The Hangover, Saturdays, 8am to 11am; and The Lowdown, Sundays, 2pm to 5pm. Only on Power 98FM.

POWER 98 DJ Profiles Jerald Justin Ko, or JK JK describes himself as Producer/Presenter & House Elf. He adds pizzazz and distinctive flavour to radio with his uniquely exuberant personality and timely wittiness. Listeners find him creative, funny and relatable.

Sonja Steinmetz Sonja is of half-German, half-Indian ethnicity. She's got a colourful on-air personality, and is bubbly, vibrant and confident. Everyone loves her! Sonja is definitely the next big thing in radio. She loves celebrity gossip, cats, leopard prints and a good meal shared with good friends.

How did your strangest request go? JK: Had a guy call me when he was in the toilet wanting to chat, and a lady who just went through a messy break up and didn't want me to put down the phone so I ended up consoling her for 1.5 hours after shift. And, the occasional creepy deep-breathing phoner. Fun!

Michael Tan Michael’s deep, sexy voice melts the hearts of young girls. He's got crazy fans who will paste his photos in their rooms. Mike lends his wit, sophistication and dead-pan humour to a show that you shouldn’t miss.

Here are some of the best sites for nature, architecture and places of worship. Komodo National Park, Indonesia Komodo dragons are so named because of their appearance and aggression, and are found nowhere else in the world except on the volcanic islands of Komodo

National Park. Best known for the world’s largest living lizard – the Komodo monitor lizard, the park is inhabited by around 5,700 of these hulking beasts. The hillsides of dry savannah and pockets of thorny green vegetation sharply contrast with the sandy beaches and blue waters, and an upwelling of nutrient-rich water from the deeper areas of the archipelago accounts for the rich reef ecosystem. Visit the park at least once in your life. It might well feel like visiting an alien planet.

Baroque Churches of the Philippines These four Roman Catholic churches constructed between the 16th to 18th Centuries showcase the Chinese and Philippine craftsmen’s interpretation of the Baroque architectural style, with the fusion of European church design and construction with local materials as well as decorative motifs. Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam Vietnam is home to one of the world’s two largest, most outstanding karst (limestone) ecosystems, with 65km of caves and underground rivers in Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park. Massive tectonic changes have created a complex karst landscape with many geological features and spectacular formations. As a result visitors can get a visual treat of terraced, dry, suspended, dendritic [branching] and intersecting caves, as well as many endemic animal species. Phong Nha–Ke Bang was initially a nature reserve, but has since been converted into a national park to protect aquatic habitats, primary and secondary forests, and rich species of flora and fauna. Southeast Asia may not have certain historical or natural attractions such as those found in our Northern neighbours. Nonetheless, the varied, amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites that are available in these seven countries in our own backyard are still eye-openers, and definitely worth making a trip to discover. W

or a break from the skyscrapers, noisy roads and fast pace of city life, consider holidaying in Guilin in Southern China, where scenic natural sites abound. The spectacular beauty and the culture-rich minority folk make it an ideal holiday destination for the city dweller. The Poetic Li River A key highlight is the Li River, which has been the subject of traditional paintings, poems and is even on the current series of the 20 yuan banknote. With its amazing karstic (limestone

scenery) hills, mountains, caves, and streams, this Chinese jewel is truly a magnificent sight to behold. Take the Li River Cruise, and feast your eyes on this lush landscape of fauna, hills, and crystal-clear waters; you can also see rice paddies, bamboo groves, forests, buffaloes, and fishermen on bamboo rafts.

Terraced Fields transform into layers of golden rice, while in Winter they turn to silvery frost. Shi Wai Tao Yuan (ShangriLa Park) For both scenic and cultural sight-seeing, Shangri-La Park offers the best of both worlds with its undulating slopes of plains, rivers and caves. There is also a theme park showcasing ethnic performances, arts and crafts and native customs.
