Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1951 and the Academy Honorary Award at the 24th Academy Awards, Rashomon is a Japanese period drama based on two short stories written by Akutagawa, who is considered the father of Japanese short stories. Directed by Akira Kurosawa, one of the most influential filmmakers in cinema history, the story begins with a priest, a woodcutter and a commoner recounting the story of a murdered samurai as they are seeking refuge from a rainstorm at a gatehouse. With three other witnesses - the samurai’s wife, a notorious bandit and the spirit of the samurai, recalled through a medium - being asked to recount the same story, and each giving different and contradictory points of view, this film explores multiple realities versus one truth. Picture A was taken with a compact digital cam and the results are dramatically different. Superior zoom image quality: Notice the distinct texture of the stone fountain and blades of grass in the compact digital cam compared to the one taken by phone cam. This is because the compact digital cam has superior lens and sensors to capture fine, crisp details. Capturing details in the highlights and shadows: Another aspect of compact digital cams’ quality is their ability to retain details and tones in the highlight and shadows. While the phone cam just depicts a rough approximation of the highlight and shadow areas, the compact digital cam reproduced rich details in those areas.

SPECIAL FEATURE Rihanna was the biggest star, drawing over 65,000 fans

F1: High-octane entertainment excites all

The sixth instalment of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix has recorded its highest attendance since the inaugural Night Race in 2008. This is not surprising, considering the amount of excitement and entertainment on and off the track. The Marina Bay Street Circuit saw a total of 262,527 visitors over the three-day sell-out race and weekend. The Stars Descend The fans also flocked to the entertainment and music superstars, with packed concerts every night. Over 12,000 screaming ‘Owlets’ and ‘Beliebers’ caught their idols Owl City and Justin Bieber in the closing concert, even though it was separately ticketed from the other events. The supernovas were undoubtedly K-pop group Big Bang, with over 35,000 fans at their concert, and The Killers and Rihanna with over 60,000 and 65,000 fans present, respectively. Other performers included veterans Tom Jones and Bob Geldorf, magician of the moment Dynamo, and local favourites The Sam Willows and The Great Spy Experiment. These and many other entertaining acts added to the fun and festivity of the Singapore Night Race which, apart from the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, included track action from GP 2 and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. Hat-trick Champ Red Bull Renault’s Sebastian Vettel claimed his third

Enthralled by The Killers, the huge crowd was energetic and enthusiastic

Big Bang excited their young fans

The Killers slay ecstatic Singapore audience and most commanding victory in the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, making it a hat-trick of wins in the unique Night Race. The 26-year-old German won the 61-lap race by a margin of 32.627 seconds from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, with Lotus Renault’s Kimi Raikkonen finishing a brilliant third after a weekend of physical pain from an old back injury. It was Alonso’s fifth Singapore podium but Raikkonen’s first. Alonso won the race in 2008 and 2010. Starting from pole position, Vettel almost lost out at the start to Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes but after edging along and past the Red Bull car, Rosberg could not coax his car through Turns 1 and 2 without yielding to Vettel once more. Said Vettel, “The car was incredible. I said to the team, this doesn’t just happen like that, by accident or by luck; there’s hard work behind it and I appreciate it – it’s just a pleasure to drive it around this crazy track!” One of the heroes of the night was Raikkonen. The 33-year-old Finn almost didn’t take to the track because of pain from a back injury sustained 12 years ago. He came through from 13th on the grid to claim his first Singapore podium. Vettel also set the race’s fastest lap of 1 min 48.574 sec on lap 46, at an average speed of 167.940km/h.

Sebastian Vettel is now hat-trick champion with his third win

Listed No. 3 by Amazon.com UK among the Top 10 best-selling artistes and albums of the decade, The Killers certainly lit the over 60,000-strong crowd By Lester J Wan The Killers were first supposed to come to Singapore in 2010. This was what I posted as my status when I found out their concert had been cancelled: “Can you Read My Mind? Somebody Told Me The Killers concert is cancelled, and For Reasons Unknown at that. It gets to my Bones. I'm thinking, are we Human, or are we dancer? But I’m trying to be Mr Brightside. If you too had a ticket, you should try to Smile Like You Mean It.” You should realise by now that I am a fan. Nevertheless, I went for their concert at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix with a fairly open mind. Brandon’s Town After three years that seemed an eternity for fans, The Killers had finally ridden into town. Not long after these Nevada cowboys strutted onto stage, to borrow a line from them, it felt as if they were “burning down the highway skyline on the back of a hurricane”. To say that they took the crowd in Singapore by storm would be an understatement. I found it hard not to be bowled over by the exuberant charm of frontman Brandon Flowers, the energetic riffs, and the heartfelt lyrics. The audience was so enamoured of Mr Flowers that the visage of every screaming female fan was practically that of ecstasy. In fact, for one brief un-macho moment, I found myself wishing that I was him with that voice, those words and the charm that could slay the ladies.

Frontman Brandon Flowers charmed and crooned his way into hearts, if he wasn’t already there Photos: TOR3Y, Singapore GP

Whether for the zooming speed demons or the superstar entertainers, the F1 Singapore Grand Prix event has proven a hit with the crowds yet again

Not surprisingly, there were posts by young fans on social media addressing him as ‘brother’ Brandon. Barely halfway through their set, you knew who owned the night, and the town. A Lightning Strike With their talismanic lightning on stage, Flowers almost immediately launched into the rousing “Mr Brightside”. In an instant, they had the crowd singing along to the melancholic yet catchy lyrics: “Jealousy / Turning saints into the sea / Swimming through sick lullabies / Choking on your alibis / But it's just the price I pay / Destiny is calling me / Open up my eager eyes / ‘Cause I'm Mr Brightside”. The crowd went wild and rarely calmed down after. Other popular hits to which the crowd sang along to included “Spaceman”, “Human” and “Somebody Told Me”. They even amused the slightly older ones with their rock rendition of the 1980s hit by Tiffany, “I Think We’re Alone Now”. By the time Flowers sang “When You Were Young” and the lyrics of “And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live…” it seemed like this man, who was born to a Mormon family, had taken his audience to a higher plane. Like a lightning strike, it was brilliant and over all too quickly. Still, the captive audience took consolation in Flowers’ parting words: "It's taken us ten years to come, and we've had a wonderful time."

Dishing it out: Fat Cow’s New Dishes Reviewed

Wagyu No Kakuni

The last time I was at Fat Cow, Group Executive Chef Dan Segall was tasked to develop a few special recipes exclusively for Weekender. While he was creating these dishes before me, his culinary artistry and technical skills were apparent. But the proof is always in the eating. That’s why, when I was invited back for a tasting of their new menu, I didn’t hesitate for a moment. Adventure in Texture & Flavour OK, I admit. I am a carnivore. Evolution has made us the top predators. And top predators don’t eat leafy cabbage. So, when dishes come to me short on meaty ingredients, I don’t get excited. Tasting the first dish, an appetiser, the Osen Tomayo No Gyu Furai (egg with fried bone marrow), $16, was just one of those "occupational hazards". Despite my nature I can still fully appreciate meat-light fare, courtesy of parental nurture. The Osen Tomayo dish was a lightly-poached egg and golden fried nugget of bone marrow, on top of a bed of seaweed in a bowl of citrus dashi (miso broth). The recommendation is to break the poached egg, mix the medley, and eat it with a spoon. As you’d expect, there is a “yolky” flavour to the whole dish. The tempura bone marrow was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The seaweed and egg’s slippery texture contrasted surprisingly with the soft

Torrijas - Spanish toast of eggs, milk, cinnamon & sugar, with a scoop of ice cream

Classy and chill

Barraka Barraka Bar and Restaurant is a chilled out and classy place for after-work drinks and nosh

Fat Cow’s Executive Chef, Dan Segall, has created a few new adventures for the taste buds. Frank Young takes a trip for the tongue and tells it all

If you are looking for a place to have some tapas and to chill with a mojito after work, you should give Barraka Bar and Restaurant a try. Nestled in the chill-out enclave of Robertson Quay, the crowd there is a good mix of expats and locals relaxing or walking their dogs after work, with an almost out-of-Singapore feel.

By Frank Young crunchiness of the seaweed with every bite, while the broth gives it a citrus-y freshness balanced with salty umami flavours. Overall, this is a finely-crafted dish designed to enhance many different taste dimensions. A Symphony of Flavours Next, I tried the Wagyu No Kakuni, $38, (Wagyu rib meat simmered in a sweet, ginger soy broth). This was a stewed dish with small delicate chunks of Wagyu and translucent white carrot in a reddish brown broth. The Wagyu was tender and melted in the mouth. It was no surprise there. The real star, though, was the broth. It added a strong yet balanced, flavourful, salty yet sweet, taste to the delicate Wagyu beef. There was a refreshing and surprising zing from the zest of the yuzu (a citrus fruit). All the strong pungent ingredients created a symphony of flavours that was both pungent and balanced – apparently a Dan Segall style.

Good Tapas for Starters Their Sparkling Sangria ($10 a glass) is a refreshing and palatecleansing aperitif. It is perfect when paired with their tapas such as the Boquerones En Vinagre, fresh anchovies seasoned in olive oil, vinegar and garlic, and the Pulpo a la Gallega ($21), boiled octopus Galician style with red

Paella de Mariscos tastes as good as it looks

paprika, rock salt and olive oil. Avoid the potato dishes at Barraka as they have not gotten the style down pat; most of them are too starchy and dry. The Main Attraction Should you feel peckish, do order their Paella de Mariscos ($38 for two, $75 for four). We liked the generous amount of seafood and flavourful rice. It is very filling and is sufficient for more than the stated amount of people the serving is for if you are small eaters. Check it out and chill out. Barraka is located at Robertson Walk, 11 Unity Street, #01-18/29, Singapore 237995. Tel: 6737 9130

Trucking along with good grub The hip food truck trend seems to have finally reached our shores. We speak to two of the pioneers in the business

Get Oven-Baked Basil Chicken and other savoury goodies from a truck

With the appropriate Mobile Food Wagon license applied from the relevant government bodies such as the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), National Parks Board (NPB) and the National Environmental Agency (NEA), you can get started in the food trucking business. The Travelling C.O.W and Kerbside Gourmet are two out of the five current vendors in Singapore. We speak with both of them for the latest food trucking news. The Travelling C.O.W Karen Cheng, creator of The Travelling C.O.W, lived abroad in Europe and the USA and felt that there was something lacking in the food scene in Singapore. Thus, she started her own food truck. Being a foodie, this idea was a perfect fit for Karen. “It takes a lot of time and patience to set this up. But all of our food is homemade,” says Karen. “I have a trained chef as well; hence the quality Kerbside Gourmet's Pea Puree is there. And

slowly it spread through word of mouth,” she shares. The Travelling C.O.W serves international favourites such as Beef Bourguignon with Mash, Chilli Crab Pasta and Seafood Laksa Wraps for $6. Kerbside Gourmet Kerbside Gourmet, brainchild of Luan Ee, is a social enterprise. With every main dish sold, one is given to the needy. Oh na na,

what’s her name? Rihanna was in town just last week and gave a rousing performance at the F1 concerts. We catch up with her on her new role with M.A.C You have many looks. Which is your favourite? My favourite makeup look is really all about the lips. I’m obsessed with lipstick – so we created “RiRi Woo” – a matte cool red lipstick. I’m really particular about the texture of my lipsticks. Most of them in my collection are mattes, with the exception of “Who’s That Chick” which is an orangey frost. It’s different for me, but I love it. Does being from the Caribbean affect your beauty routine? Sure — I think where you’re from always affects your routines. I tend to like warmer looks. I like sheen skin and I love bright lipstick. What role does makeup play in your life? Makeup is my superhero. It's been part of my life for so long – I couldn't do without. I really love being natural too, but sometimes there’s nothing like a good makeup job. On days off, what is your makeup or beauty routine? When I go out, I always reach for a lipstick — a lipstick that is bright or extreme, like “RiRi Woo” or like something really dark and vampy, like “Talk That Talk” – a matte plum shade. You’ve done one album a year for 7 years. Do you plan to keep this up? I love making music, so I never plan on making the album based on timing. I never say, “OK, new year, new album.” I love making music and it excites me. I end up making my albums really close together. So far, it’s been almost one every year. But, who knows? I definitely don’t plan on stopping. W

he newly-named Creative Partner of M.A.C Cosmetics, Rihanna, speaks her mind on her new role and her favourite looks.

You’re the first person that M.A.C has named as a creative partner. Why do you think they chose you? As a brand, M.A.C Cosmetics always has fun while taking risks — they are not afraid. We are the same in that way, and they certainly recognised that. It’s a natural marriage, as we are both not afraid to show our points of

view. I’ve been a fan of M.A.C and have been wearing the products for as long as I can remember. I am excited to be involved with them on the creative level. How involved were you in the creative and colour selection, naming OF colours and creating products? My work with M.A.C doesn’t feel like work. I am involved in the entire process — names, colour ways, packaging. I look forward to these kinds of tasks.

The Riri Hearts M.A.C Fall Collection is available exclusively at M.A.C Sephora Ion, M.A.C Ngee Ann City and M.A.C Bugis Junction.

wo mysterious women seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort after fleeing the scene of a violent crime. They try to find money and refuge along the tawdry seafront and in the dilapidated hotels. Clara (played by Gemma Arterton) meets lonely Noel (played by Daniel Mays), who provides shelter in his deserted guesthouse, Byzantium. Schoolgirl Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) befriends Frank (Caleb Landry Jones) and tells him their lethal secret. The mother and daughter pair was born 200 years ago, and they survive on human blood. As knowledge of their secret spreads, their past catches up on them with mortal consequence.

Vampiric Inspiration Moira Buffini, the playwright and screenwriter behind the recent Jane Eyre movie, had been toying with the idea of writing a vampire story. The unique motherdaughter storyline also excited producer Elizabeth Karlsen. “A mother's relationship with her teenage daughter is raw with emotion of the best and worst kind. Vampiric Epic New hope What happens when two mysterious women flee a violent crime scene to seek refuge in a dilapidated hotel? More blood and secrets start to flow with parental despair and longing for the innocence of youth,” says Karlsen. “When the child is 16 and the mother a beautiful 24-year-old, the natural order is turned on its head. A fantastic, twisted and confused relationship takes its place. It is at once familiar yet totally alien,” she adds. A UNIQUE FEMALE ROLE Gemma Arterton says of her role as Clara, “It is everything I have wanted to do. You don’t tend to find scripts for women like this. Moira Buffini, the writer, is amazing. There aren’t many female screenwriters but she writes films for women.” She adds, “Continually, I read scripts where the woman is there to serve the man in some way, or to make him look better, his support. In this, it is total

subversion. The men are the prey, the weak ones.” Karlsen says, “I hope that the audiences see what I see — a hugely original and unique piece. It is visually and emotionally poetic, with two women at its centre who are together intelligent, strident, stunning, strong and utterly, completely compelling.” “It is a vampire film like we have never seen before,” she says. for indie rock When was the last time you were excited about a new band? Thanks to The 1975, you will soon KNOW By Sonja Steinmetz

Meet Matthew Healy, Adam Hann, George Daniel and Ross MacDonald. The 1975, a Manchester-based quartet, is the newest addition to the alternative/indie rock scene and has just released a debut, self-titled album. Just how good is it? Well, it entered the UK album charts straight at No. 1, which is no mean feat for a relatively unknown band.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: Meet the Foodimals The sequel to popular animation Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs features old characters and new ones for more mouth-watering fun

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s mouthwatering comedy left off in the first part. Quirky inventor Flint Lockwood thought that he had saved the

world when he destroyed his most infamous invention - a machine that turned water into food, causing cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes. Flint soon learns that his invention had survived and is

now creating “foodimals" – food animals. Flint and his friends embark on a dangerously delicious mission to battle hungry “tacodiles”, “shrimpanzees”, “hippotatomuses”, “cheespiders” and other foodimals

to save the world – again. More Hijinks “I love the world of Cloudy. Of all the films I’ve worked on, Cloudy is my favourite. So to get the chance to go back and revisit

Keeping it Real These hardworking lads have been touring extensively in the UK, bringing their music to any audience that would listen. They soon got noticed by radio stations and moved from playing at small local clubs to opening for huge names such as Muse and The Rolling Stones. No fancy marketing schemes and no social media gimmicks; just good old rock ‘n’ roll. Deep Tracks Injecting freshness to the genre, they sound like a cross between the The Killers, The Arctic Monkeys and Icona Pop. They’ve fused rock with electro and synth and paint a vivid picture of their generation with deeply personal and autobiographical lyrics. The 1975 generously offer 16 tracks on this album but never feel indulgent. Tracks move

the characters in this new, crazy world that we were developing made this a really exciting project for me,” says Co-Director Cody Cameron, who directs the film with Kris Pearn. It’s back to Swallow Falls, with Flint and all of his friends in tow, to try to stop the dastardly food creatures before they attack the world. All Together Again Bill Hader brings a silly and cartoon-like energy to his portrayal of Flint Lockwood. “It’s great to be back in the spray-on shoes of Flint Lockwood. In fact, it seems like I never left him behind: Every month or so, I get to come into the booth and do Flint’s voice for a bit. I love it,”

2 1 Tilly Soelistyo, the brains behind womenswear brand Possi-tilly-ty, marries impeccable construction with her signature style of modern versatility. She conceptualised her brand, Possi-tilly-ty, by drawing from urban women who desire stylish yet comfortable apparel to support them in their day-today lives.

3

On Cheong Jewellery Since its inception in 1936, On Cheong Jewellery has a reputation as a purveyor of unique designs. They showcase their Jade Ring with 169 diamonds, each 2.28 carats set in 750 white gold.

Mouawad The highlight of the Singapore Jewelfest 2013 is definitely the Asian debut of the L’Incomparable – the world’s largest internally-flawless diamond at 400 carats. In its original state the diamond was over 900 carats. It is valued at US$55 million and holds the Guinness World Record for “Most Valuable Necklace”.

Artistic Beginnings Since she was in secondary school, the Indonesian-born Tilly has always been picky about fashion. “Being petite, skinny and scrawny [in secondary school] I had to customise my clothes through a tailor, even right down to my uniform. I refused to wear those unflattering cuts and had mine made in a tapered pencilstyle skirt in similar fabric,” she explains. “Thank God, I got away with it by giving my teacher the excuse the ones that are available at the uniform stores are way too big for me!” Having worked her way up as a Creative Director for SinoLondon, an international pret-aporter label, she launched Possitilly-ty in 2011.

The Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair will take place at Marina Bay Sands.

The Singapore Jewelfest 2013 will take place at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

Her recent Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, Gradual Progression, features a mash-up of drape and boxy details, and a juxtaposition of sheer and matte fabrics complemented with graphic and floral prints. “Monochrome trends that are evergreen will be in our Autumn/ Winter collection. E

veryone loses hair when combing, brushing or washing, and even when sleeping. It is no wonder as normal hair grows in cycles and goes through three stages – growing, resting and falling. Each strand of hair grows in a cavity in the skin called a follicle for two to six years, then rests, and eventually falls out. A new strand of hair soon begins growing in its place. Baldness generally occurs when the hair follicle shrinks over time, and eventually does not grow new hair. Abnormal Hair Loss People generally lose about 50 strands of hair daily, and hair loss becomes abnormal when one loses over 100 strands of hair a day. This may show up as a thinning of hair, a patchy loss of hair over the scalp, or affect hair-bearing areas such as the beard or eyebrows. The most common form of hair loss is known as androgenetic alopecia, and occurs in both men and women. In men, this condition is known as male pattern hair loss. This is when hair starts falling above both temples and from the crown. Next, the hairline recedes into a characteristic ‘M’ shape, then a horseshoe ‘U’ shape pattern of hair around the sides of the head, and eventually results in partial or complete baldness. For female pattern hair loss, it commonly starts from the hairline and it expands to the crown area once it reaches the advance stages.

 Before

baldness

Who Is At Risk? In men, baldness is largely related to genes and male sex hormones such as dihydrotestosterone. For women, hair loss is usually related to aging, changes in the levels of androgens, and a family history of this condition. Many men experience the early stage of male pattern hair loss from as early as their 20s. Even though there usually aren’t medical repercussions and hair problems are just biological setbacks, losing hair can affect one’s self-esteem or psychological wellbeing. If you are a man in your 20s with thinning hair, and have a family history of hair loss, it could very well be that you are experiencing the early stages of male pattern hair loss. Treatment There are two approved medications used to treat hair loss. One is Minoxidil, a solution to apply directly on the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles. It slows down hair loss for many men, and some can grow new hair. The other is finasteride, a pill that interferes with the body’s production of a male hormone linked to baldness. However, hair loss returns when one stops using these medications. It may be a good idea to consider using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Beijing 101: Herbal Remedies As a component of TCM, Chinese herbal remedies can balance and invigorate the body's natural systems naturally, and it is an art to integrate various herbs to

achieve certain effects or purposes. Beijing 101’s herbal hair treatments contain the combination of herbs needed to promote optimum results on hair growth. Beijing 101 has a prescription range of 101 hair care products to treat different kinds of hair conditions, including hair loss, grey hair and oily scales. Only premium grade Chinese herbs - such as dang gui, ginseng and he shou wu (a flower called Fallopia multiflora) - are used to treat hair and scalp problems.

Qualified Consultants Their team of qualified hair care consultants and physicians are trained in traditional Chinese medicine and have 39 years of experience in treating hair problems. Their anti-hair thinning programs are based on the philosophy that the blood needs to be nourished for healthy hair growth. Some of these herbs which nourish and strengthen the blood include angelica sinensis (dang gui), radix ligustici wallichii (chuan xiong), and fructus mori albae (sang shen zi). Beijing 101’s treatment products are sold only with prescriptions from their consultants and TCM physicians, who will review your progress regularly to ensure that you benefit from the products most suited to your individual hair and scalp condition. Testimonial: Mr Ng

 Michelle Chong is one of the celebrity clients who have found Beijing 101's treatments beneficial

“Beijing 101’s treatment products are sold only with prescriptions...”

Mr Ng Teck Thay, an enthusiastic singer, recounts his experience: “I didn’t believe that hair loss could happen to me until I started to see clumps of hair at the drainage hole whenever I washed my hair. Combined with a stressful lifestyle, I began to notice more hair thinning on my crown area.” “Initially, I tried to convince myself that this was just a temporary issue until my fellow singing mates raised the issue to me after seeing massive hair-fall on my shirt. It was then I knew this was a much more serious problem and that I should seek help,” he says. After undergoing the customised treatments at Beijing 101, Mr Ng was elated to see major improvements in the condition of his hair. “Beijing 101’s hair treatments… have helped me to regain my hair health. The hair consultants at Beijing 101 are very thorough in helping… and advising me on proper hair care habits to attain a healthier scalp,” he says. Now with a head of fuller and thicker hair, Ng bids goodbye to hair loss as well as low self-esteem. He exclaims, “Thank you Beijing 101 for regaining my confidence!”
