Here are some of the most epic and memorable moments of the World Cup for you to reminisce or wrap your mind around
W
hen the World Cup starts in June, we’ll all be expecting brilliant goals and glorious victories. Can Brazil 2014 live up to its hype? Either way, we present to you some of the most epic moments from the past World Cups.
Lehmann’s Scripted Penalty Saves Rather than follow the conventional strategy of most goalkeepers – take a blind leap as the ball flies toward goal – German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann decided to plan how he would face the penalties from Argentina during the 2006 World Cup. Lehmann maintained a list of likely Argentinian penalty takers in his sock and where they would most probably place
their shot. He then proceeded to jump in the correct direction and to the correct spot for almost every shot. His penalty saves helped to send Germany into the semi-final.
DaMarcus Beasley Takes a P... Perhaps not the greatest moment in football history but Damarcus Beasley of the USA’s public urination stunt in the 2002 World Cup is certainly one
A controversial moment that lives on in infamy. In the 1986 World Cup, the mercurial Diego Maradona punches the ball into the goal and celebrates as if nothing was wrong. Even more shocking was that the referee had missed the most obvious of handballs. By the time the mistake had been discovered, it was too late. The goal stood and Argentina went on to win the World Cup.
Ronaldinho’s 40-Yard Free Kick In the 2002 World Cup quarter final against England, Ronaldinho scored perhaps the most stunning goal of his
illustrious career. With an elegant chip from a 40-yard free kick, the Brazilian crushed the hopes of England fans.
The Zidane Head Butt Zinedine Zidane is a living legend whose silky skills have mesmerised millions around the world. Nonetheless, his stellar career ended in disgrace when he head-butted Marco Materazzi of Italy. The French star was sent off and Italy went on to win the 2006 World Cup. That was the last match of Zidane’s professional career and, unfortunately, he will forever be remembered for his misconduct that cost France the World Cup. SPECIAL MENTION:
René Higuita’s Scorpion Save Colombian Goalkeeper René Higuita Zapata may have been known for his hijinks and even a blunder or two in the World Cup but his most epic moment, and one of the most epic moments ever in football history, came in a friendly match against England in 1995. Jamie Redknapp had taken a shot at goal. Higuita leapt up and kicked the ball away with two legs, in a movement mimicking that of a scorpion’s tail. This unorthodox save raised eyebrows and brought much amusement to football fans around the world. Let’s see if more epic moments of football history will be made. By Basil Lee

24: Live Another Day Jack Bauer and company from the pulsating series “24” are back to thrill fans as they “Live Another Day” Four years after the conclusion of the eighth and ‘last’ season of action-packed series “24” comes “24: Live Another Day”. This electrifying new series is all set to satisfy your appetite for more of the adrenaline-pumping and Emmy Award-winning drama.
The Winning Team This high-drama, fast-paced narrative reunites the Emmy Award-winning team of executive producer Howard Gordon; star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland; co-creator Robert Cochran; executive producers Evan Katz, Manny Coto, David Fury, Brian Grazer; and director Jon Cassar. This means the winning team from “24” is back to give you bigger, better action and surprises. The one thing that hasn’t changed: “24: Live Another Day” retains the real-time, pulse-pounding, high-speed format with split screens as well as story lines that are interwoven. This show has distilled TV drama into
pure entertainment.
Back with a Bang Agent Jack Bauer (reprised by Kiefer Sutherland) became a fugitive from justice four years ago and now resurfaces in London when the President of the USA visits the British capital. And he is willing to risk his life and freedom to avert yet another global disaster... This time, chasing him down are CIA head Steve Navarro (played by Benjamin Bratt); CIA agent Kate Morgan (Yvonne Strahovski), who is both ingenious and ruthless; Jordan
Reed (Giles Matthey), a smart and sophisticated CIA computer tech; and Erik Ritter (Gbenga Akinnagbe), a sharp, strong and arrogant field operative. Calling the shots is James Heller (William Devane), now President of the United States of America. Heller is flanked by his Chief of Staff Mark Boudreau (Tate Donovan), who is married to Heller’s daughter – Jack’s old flame, Audrey (Kim Raver). Meanwhile, a hard-edged Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub), Bauer’s CTU confidante, is now working underground with high-profile

hacker Adrian Cross (Michael Wincott).
What Twists May Come If we’ve learned anything about “24”, it’s not about what but how we will be kept on the edge of our seats. Can Jack thwart an unthinkable terrorist attack that could change the world? Where will the next 24 hours lead this time? Relive the gripping experience of the criticallyacclaimed “24” with “24: Live Another Day”. Nothing else comes close on TV. What twists may come?
“24: Live Another Day” airs within 24 hours of the US telecast, every Tue, 10pm, on AXN & AXN HD (StarHub TV Ch 511).

Godzilla: No monster but a god
Is the gargantuan beast benevolent or evil?
“Because what’s really happening is that you’re hiding something out there. And it is going to send us back to the Stone Age. God help us all...”
In these dark hours, the humans cannot help but wonder, “Can we kill it?” and as Ken Watanabe so aptly replies, “Something can.”
The international and Asia trailers depict a desolate city that’s cowering from the destruction of a monster. Not one, but two kinds of Kaiju duel against each other in the aftermath of a forsaken human world.
The Majesty of Godzilla
Battling Beasts Godzilla rises from beneath in the hope of restoring balance to an otherwise helpless human race. Its foe is a creature resembling a pterodactyl, terrorising our world.
The creation of Godzilla, this time round, will almost definitely be in CGI, which is a potentially great improvement from 1998’s version of the eponymous creature. The new and improved look and effects will better portray the majesty of this magnificent creature.
Recognised Names to Ground the Epic Bryan Cranston plays Joe Brody, a man who
refuses to believe the lies that try to cover up the existence of these god-like creatures. Most famously known for his awardwinning performance in Television’s “Breaking Bad”, Cranston joins a remarkable group of actors who feature in this epic remake. Another fan-favourite in this film is Ken Watanabe. His most memorable performances were in The Last Samurai and Inception. The two veterans are joined by the likes of superb actors, Aaron Taylor Johnson (Kickass), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck and The Bourne Legacy) and Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient and Cosmopolis). There is no doubt that the remake of this classic will be a box office hit, but can Director Gareth Edward’s production hold its own against potential blockbusters such as The Amazing Spiderman 2 and the new X-Men movie? Love is in the Air: Ridiculously good looking This classic French romcom with incredibly good looking leads Ludivine Sagnier and Nicolas Bedos will amuse you Love is in the air is about a playboy (played by Nicolas Bedos) and his ex (played by the popular Ludivine Sagnier) who are forced to sit beside each other for a six-hour flight. Uncomfortable and awkward at first, the two rediscover what brought them together to begin with, and what ultimately tore them apart.
SoundS Familiar? An unrepentant playboy breaks the heart of his love, sending the relationship to the pits. Years later, the two run into each other and rediscover their love
Grand Piano: Shades of de Palma & Hitchcock Grand Piano is about a talented pianist Tom Selznick who makes a comeback from a humiliating concert over stage fright five years earlier. But before he begins to play, he is surprised to see on the score a threatening message written in red ink: “Play one wrong note and you die.” From then on, the tempo builds up, until it hits the final piece in the recital.
Crisis under Camouflage
Only the pianist (Elijah Wood) is aware of the threat
What the audience in the opulent hall sees is just Tom playing in plain sight, backed by a full orchestra. As the story goes, only Tom knows of the crisis confronting him. Not even his wife Emma realises the danger her husband faces, as she watches the recital from a box seat. Feeling rather uneasy, Tom tries to keep his cool and complies with the sniper’s voice-over
for one another. This premise is the idea from which recent film-makers have created a countless number of modern day chick-flicks. Nevertheless, the portrayal and the situations depicted are both interesting and amusing. Still, the ending of a rom-com of this kind is almost never in doubt and, with leads as beautiful and charming as Sagnier and Bedos, one can anticipate in suspense the moment when they finally rekindle their love. This is definitely a couples’ movie or one for romantics at heart.
Amour et Turbulences
title, meaning “love and turbulence”, this film relies heavily on the charm of its main leads. The beautiful Sagnier takes the female lead in her first romantic comedy, while Bedos has a slightly tougher job in convincing the audience to like his character, an immoral playboy with quirks some will even come to hate. Love is in the Air’s storyline is decent, and one that begs for a Hollywood studio remake starring the likes of Ashton Kutcher. However, with such heavy reliance on the actor’s charisma and looks, one will wonder if a Hollywood actor can possibly be equal in flair and charm. This film is perhaps a mainstream rom-com with just enough twists and turns for it to be original. It promises to be worth watching, simply for the ridiculously handsome Bedos and brilliantly sweet Sagnier. instructions through an earpiece while performing before an unsuspecting audience. Will Tom’s stage fright return to haunt him? Will he survive the sniper’s threat on his life?
About the Cast Cherubic-faced Elijah Wood apparently befits the lead role of the pensive pianist. Wood’s eyes-wide-open look still captivates, no doubt – conspicuous even long after leaving behind his Frodo character in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In this new thriller, he takes on the role of the victim, a reversal of his serial killer role in the Franck Khalfoun remake of Maniac. Boasting an acting career spanning two decades with lead roles in hits such as 2012 and Shanghai, John Cusack plays the sinister Clem. However, his character is heard more than seen in this 90-minute movie, and
his threatening voice is audible through a earpiece meant only for the pianist. Stage and screen actress Kerry Bishe (of Argo) plays the supportive wife who stages the concert in a bid to restore confidence in her talented spouse.
Indoor Setting Much of the suspensefilled movie, directed by Spanish director Eugenio Mira, is shot within a Chicago symphonic hall, with the trappings of a full orchestra and a 4,000-capacity audience partially digitised. Even the music is played to good effect as the plot thickens, just as in a Brian de Palma thriller or a Hitchcock shocker. All said, Grand Piano is likely to keep you on the edge of your seat. Taste of the Alps in Amoy St New kid on the block Zott’s True Alps joins the food scene with its take on alpine cuisine When you first step into Zott’s True Alps, modern art pieces, taxidermy and a slightly rustic décor greets you. Don’t freak out if you’re sitting near the kitchen and a taxidermic bull’s head stares back at you. It is merely the owner’s late cow watching over the restaurant. Opened in March, Mr Christian Zott, who is the owner, wanted to share his personal experiences by exposing diners to the history
Helming the kitchen at Zott’s is a towering gentleman named Chef Lorenz-Maria Griesser, with a bone-crushing handshake, should you be greeted by him in the restaurant. You have been warned. There, you will receive a complimentary Konig Ludwig Brot, a traditional Bavarian rye, spelt and malt bread that is made inhouse daily and served with chives and radish as an amuse-bouche before your meal. The bread is slightly sour and drier, which is typical of European bread. I did like the Carpaccio d’espadon ($28) to start the meal, a dish of thinly-sliced marinated swordfish with a frozen Topaz apple creation (apple mousse). The chef’s techniques are somewhat molecular, despite how much he dislikes the term, and that was evident in the Insalata di finocchio arance e olive ($26), a fennel salad comprising olive spheres and goat cheese mousse.
The Main Meal There is a playful element in the menu as demonstrated in the Bondage Chicken, Bavarian Style ($36), a roasted young poussin
n e w n ota b l e s – a chicken less than 28 days old – seasoned with sweet paprika powder, curry and cayenne pepper and served with truffle mayonnaise or fruit sour cream. The chicken is incredibly tender and needs very little sauce to accompany; as the spices give it enough flavour. It comes mounted on a pike, making this a perfect food photo moment. The Kaiserschmarrn – Zott’s Style ($29 or $45) is an interesting fusion of pan-fried foie gras and pineapple goose liver ice cream. The goose liver ice cream may sound bizarre but the pineapple in it adds much needed sweetness to it; thus, masking the gamey scent. Paired with the foie gras, it results in a palatable dish. The crowd-pleasing Wiener Schnitzel ($48) is thinly-sliced veal escalope that is breaded and pan-fried, and comes with potato foam and red radish salad. It is a familiar dish to most Singaporeans. If you are less adventurous, you could go for that. Desserts are fun at Zott’s as well, such as the Griessbrei ($16), a semolina pudding served with pear ice cream, cinnamon sugar and mint basil butter. It looks deceptively like a stodgy pancake but the pudding is surprisingly soft and had a wonderful spice to it from the cinnamon sugar and the mint basil butter. Try something new this weekend at Zott’s. Zott’s, 97 Amoy Street, Singapore 069917, Tel: 6223 0913

Fragrant Vietnamese food Nam Nam Noodle Bar updates its menu with a new range of bites, noodles and sandwiches I’m constantly trying to find good Vietnamese food in Singapore, and having lived in Saigon previously, I realised that trudging all the way to Joo Chiat was a little too far for just a bowl of beef noodle soup. When Nam Nam Noodle Bar opened up a couple years ago, they did not have my favourite bun thit nuong - dry noodles with lemongrass pork. However, they have recently added it to the menu; and I’m thrilled!

Authentic Vietnamese? I have to be honest and say that the Nam Nam Noodle Bar’s pho is nothing like the kind I was accustomed to in Vietnam. The broth in Vietnam is slightly sweeter and comes with sides of lime, lime leaves, and bean sprouts. They also soak pieces of you tiao (fried dough sticks) in the broth. Even though I find that they do not taste as authentic as the food in Vietnam, Nam Nam Noodle Bar has some Pho Beef Steak Slices ($8.90) that are excellent. The meat is amazing; the beef is cooked medium-rare
MelLben Signature Reviewed in Apr 18 Issue The popular household name has arrived in the city. Don’t miss the signature dish Creamy Butter Crab and the Salted Egg Yolk Prawn. Even the vegetables such as the Assorted Mushroom with Spinach is crisp and so well-flavoured, you’ll back for more. Bestway Building, 12 Prince Edward Road, Singapore 079212, Tel: 6220 5512

The chefs have put forth a heartwarming menu that is a collection of traditional recipes from their families, as well as an array of favourite recipes from various parts of Spain. 619 Bukit Timah Road, Singapore 269720, Tel: 6463 2810

Roosevelt’s Diner and Bar Reviewed in May 9 Issue Tucked away in a quiet corner of Tanjong Pagar, Roosevelt’s may have a chic and minimalist take on the loud American diner, but it certainly is not a minimalist with the food. We recommend Jalapeno Bacon Mac & Cheese and the Southern Fried Chicken. Dorsett Residences, 331 New Bridge Road, #01-02, Singapore 088764, Tel: 6538 3518
The Missing Pan Reviewed in Apr 25 Issue This stylish bakery-eatery features modern cuisine with an imaginative approach; preparing and serving food and artisanal baked goods with a twist on traditional methods. A good place for the tai tai community to gather and savour a bite. 619D Bukit Timah Road, #01/02-01, Singapore 269724, Tel: 6466 4377
Cold Cuts, Caramelised FiveSpice Pork Belly and Chicken Floss ($6.90) were actually quite good. The fatty pork and sweet chicken floss balanced the tart vegetables perfectly.
Noodles: Dry or Wet The dry noodles were my favourite staple in Saigon, especially the pork one. Nam Nam Noodle Bar’s Dry Sautéed Lemongrass Pork Noodle ($9.90) is not bad. The vermicelli is soft and topped with succulent pieces of pork, and the sauce for the noodles sits on the table so you can pour as much as you want. The small bites such as the Shrimp Paste Lemongrass Skewers ($4.90) are also good for sharing. Round off the meal
Belgian: Fine & hearty indulgence Belgian food is often prepared with the finesse of the French and served in generous Germansized portions. These Belgian eateries pair distinctive dishes with fine beers.
Wheat beer goes brilliantly with the Moules Frites that Belgians can’t live without
and used in the noodles. Compared to the tough pieces of meat I got in Saigon, this was much better. However, the broth fell short as it was a little more peppery (similar to our bak kut teh). Still, I did like the new addition to their banh mi menu: the Sautéed Lemongrass Pork with Cream Cheese ($6.90). The crisp baguette encased a flavourful piece of pork with marinated tart vegetable, cilantro and cream cheese. One bite took me back to Vietnam for a while. Surprisingly, the localised

7 Exotic Rum Cocktails With exotic rum labels hitting the bars each week, rum cocktails are the next big thing in Singapore At the mention of rum cocktails, classics such as daiquiris, mojitos and pina coladas come to mind. Pushing traditional boundaries to bring us exciting rum libations are bars that have certainly created some exotic concoctions. We go on a blazing trail to score you eight of the most unique rum tipples in town.
28 Days Later ($24) A twist on the classic Zombie cocktail by Donn the Beachcomber, 28 Days Later combines three types of rum - Plantation 3 Star, Plantation Overproof and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva with Sombra mescal - put to rest in a French oak barrel for 28 days. The extra ageing allows the flavours to fully blossom and meld together while taking the edge off the alcoholic bite,

resulting in an earthy, fullbodied base. Fresh tropical fruits, homemade orgeat syrup and Angostura bitters are then added to kick start the cocktail. 28HKS, 28 Hong Kong Street, Singapore 059667, Tel: 6533 2001
Beaded Slippers ($22) A tribute to the Peranakans known for handcrafting sequined beaded slippers, Beaded Slippers consists of gula Melaka (palm sugar) muddled with pandan leaves, then shaken with El Ron Prohibido rum and coconut cream. We especially enjoyed how the coconut cream and gula Melaka provided a rich local flavour that adds character. Served in a coupe glass rimmed with fresh coconut shreds and a side of adzuki bean paste, this is one dessert cocktail worth every calorie. Ah Sam Cold Drink Stall, 60A Boat Quay, Singapore 049848, Tel: 6535 0838
Bob’s Mojito ($24) While a traditional mojito is made up of five ingredients white rum, sugar cane juice, lime juice, sparkling water and mint, new-age mixologists have given us more to be thankful for.
Signature house cocktail Bob’s Mojito uses coconut water in place of traditional lime juice, resulting in a refreshing and slightly tangy aftertaste. A touch of fresh lime and mint leaves takes the Havana Club Blanco rum to a new level of intensity as the cocktail swirls around a fresh young coconut. Corsair ($19) Named after French corsairs (privateers authorised to conduct raids on ships of a nation at war with the French crown), this rum cocktail is a perfect harmony of rich robust flavours - the velvety smooth rum complements the sour and bitter aftertaste of pineapple and Angostura bitters. The smokiness from the slightly caramelised grilled Sarawak pineapple and pineapple gum bring out the sweetness of the Chartreuse yellow liqueur and Plantation Grenada rum developing a higher intensity of malt that lingers with each sip. Teapot Tini ($15) A fusion of rum and ice minty chamomile tea with red dates and longan (reminiscent of the traditional Chinese tea), this tea cocktail is soothing at first sip - chamomile tea calms the nerves, before the Mount Gay Eclipse Gold rum kicks in with a hint of spice. Its refreshing minty aftertaste juxtaposed with the rum is a unique pairing that actually works. What a Feeling!
Bungee jumping Feel the rush as you leap from the world’s highest commercial jump-off point In 1979, the first bungee jumpers were arrested for leaping off a 76-metre high suspension bridge in Bristol, England. Today, you need not run foul of the law for bungee jumping in New Zealand, South Korea or Macau. Just ensure that you are certified fit!

Bungee jumping, popularised by New Zealander AJ Hackett, is probably the nearest thing to swinging like Spider-Man does deftly on celluloid and in comics. Summon your guts if you are serious about it and do the jump in style. For instance, you can leap from the world’s highest commercial bungee jump-off point – the AJ Hackett Macau Tower, which stands at 233m. For US$361, you will experience the ultimate free fall at 200km/h from the top of the tower, until you reach about 30m above ground, before rebounding a few times and finally gently landing on the airbag below. The guide cables system ensures that you do not collide with the tower and enables bungee jumps in almost any weather condition.
Lenggong Valley: A fascinating World Heritage site in Perak Take an eye-opening trip up north and delve into the mystical lifestyle of prehistoric man amid cave dwellings
This UNESCO World Heritage site represents one of the earliest records of human settlement in the world
Discover a hidden realm and remains of prehistoric man
Night Jump an Option Opt for a night jump to see the bright lights of Macau while high up in the air. Night jumps start from 6pm in winter and 7.30pm in summer. Some feel that this is more thrilling as you won’t see as much apart from the city lights. For your feat, you will be presented a Bungy Jump e-Certificate and a T-shirt. Souvenir items such as photo and video recording of your jump are also available. Be warned: Check with your doctor on your fitness and health before making the trip for the jump. Also, you need to be able to fit into the harness to do the jump. Visit www.ajhackett.com/macau/ for more information.

here is much more to Malaysia’s latest renowned heritage site than meets the eye, especially if you are a history or geography buff. Lenggong Valley, nestling by the meandering Sungai Perak amid dense vegetation, has been inscribed a UNESCO World Heritage site by the World Heritage Committee on Jun 30, 2012. Because of the historic finds, the valley has attracted visitors from all parts of the world. From Ipoh, it is a 45-minute drive up to Lenggong, a small settlement town about 300km north of Kuala Lumpur and 100km from Ipoh, Perak’s state capital. En route to Lenggong, you should stop by the Archaeological Gallery at Kota Tampan, which arranges guided tours to the archaeological hill sites up north.
Mystical Caves The sites, dating to the Palaeolithic (Stone Age), Neolithic (New Stone Age) and Metal
Tambun Tibetan Buddhist Temple is surrounded by valleys, orchards and limestone hills
era, comprise a series of limestone caves and open-air spots. They represent one of the earliest records of human settlement in the world. Some of the caves have bizarre names: Gua Bunuh (Murder Cave), Gua Harimau (Tiger Cave) and Gua Gunung Runtuh (Cave of Collapsed Mountain). Nonetheless, archaeological evidences gathered confirm that prehistoric man took refuge in the caves here. They included artefacts such as bronze axes, stone tools and pottery; charcoal drawings on the cave walls; and a burial site of an ancient tribe at Gua Harimau.
Remarkable Discoveries One remarkable find at Gua Gunung Runtuh in May 1990 made headline news. The expedition led by Prof Emeritus Dato Zuraina Majid discovered
the burial site of a deformed man in his 40s. The remains of his skeleton were found intact on the ground after 10,000 years! During your visit to Lenggong, you will learn about the moving tale of this “Perak Man”, apart from other exciting historical discoveries. Visitors embarking on this journey to a World Heritage Site will find the trip a first-hand learning experience! Malaysia’s other World Heritage sites are: Georgetown in Penang and Melaka City (both of which share the same Heritage City status), Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak, and Kinabalu Park in Sabah. For more information, contact: Tourism Malaysia (Singapore), 80 Robinson Road, #01-01 B/C/D, Singapore 068898, Tel: 6532 6321, Fb: Facebook.com/ TMSingapore.
