them after school almost every day. My father confronted a group of five of them one day by displaying an extremely calm yet stern manner and threatened to get even with them if they continue with their debauchery [sic] act again. Ever since then, they stopped their extortion on me. Real badass indeed, isn’t he?” By Edwin Tan
Cool Badass Dad #1: Tan Kim Chuan “My dad is the coolest because he knocked down nine glasses of beer at one shot on behalf of my brother at his wedding to ‘salvage’ him from getting ‘attacked’ by the guests. It was indeed intrepid of him to stand up for his beloved children, even though he may jeopardise his health along the way, especially when he is not a regular drinker. He is also the most badass dad because I remembered once, when I was in my secondary school days, I was bullied by a particular group of students. I was extorted by
Cool Badass Dad #2: Tan Yew Boh “My dad is my hero and my role model. My dad gave me a great start in life. He is caring and has always strived to give me and my sisters good values.
He was and continues to be a positive role model as a father and husband. My father has worked very hard in his life to make sure he provides his family with everything they need. Even though my father worked all of the time, he still managed to make time for his family. My parents had very little money to raise me on their own, so my dad went to work right away to help support his family. He gave up all his freedom and the fun of a youthful life to help support his family. My dad has been working at least two jobs at a time since the age of twenty. My dad has always been by my side through everything whenever I needed him. My dad is also a great example of a role model because he is a good man with many admirable qualities. He is a kind, protective, loving, caring, and hard-working man. He would give anybody the shirt off his back and help anyone out. A salute to my dad and all the good daddies out there for all the sacrifices you made for us. For making us laugh, for letting us come to work with you and for looking after us and teaching us things, for all the awesome things you were and for all the awful things you weren’t.
Well, for all that, I have a few words to say to you: I love you, dad!” By Eugene Tan* *Edited to fit.
Special Mention, #3: Rahmat bin Alias “My dad is so [cool and badass] because at 69 he still plays his guitar every single day, and is still thinking of getting more guitars to add to his collection. These include: two Fender Stratocasters, one Fender Telecaster, one acoustic guitar, one Yamaha Semi-Acoustic guitar, one Epiphone SemiAcoustic guitar, one Washburn Nuno Bettencourt N2, one Ibanez RGS, and one Yamaha Bass (four-string) which is massive. He still goes jamming with his friends too.” By Randy Rozali

generation of football stars.
England vs Italy 15 Jun, 6am
This year’s German squad looks stronger than ever. Recently, Germany has been the world’s most consistent side. The success of top German club Bayern Munich is also a good omen. Germany seems to have made a strange decision to put just one out-and-out striker in the entire squad. We will see if this strategy will backfire. Miroslav Klose will look to provide the firepower for the German giants while Real Madrid’s galactico Cristiano Ronaldo looks to pull Portugal further than the round of 16. Stay tuned and see who will come out tops in this clash of styles and cultures. Many other games will be played in opening week. Be sure to watch your favourite teams, starting from Jun 13. The magic has begun!
While some experienced veterans are no longer in the England squad, there are some who feel the current England team is perhaps a more promising side than ones in recent years. As in most tournaments, many English supporters have high hopes for the Lions this time round.
Promises: Addictions
Germany vs Portugal 17 Jun, 12am
Will they still have to keep dreaming of World Cup glory and will their years of disappointment and hurt be prolonged? Will rivals Italy spoil the party? Italy, England’s opponents in the opening week, once were glorified world champions. Nevertheless, more recently, the Azzurri crashed out of the 2010 World Cup in shame. Both sides are equally passionate, filled with talent and with everything to prove. Whether blue or white will be the victor, England vs Italy is not to be missed. Look out for a new

So what is “Passionate Science”? Don’t miss this chance to find out more about the “Gift of Recovery”, dealing with addictions and how group therapy can help In light of the upcoming National Addiction Recovery Conference from Jun 24 to 27, we spoke to Dr Munidasa Winslow, a familiar name in the field of Addictions and about Promises, the conference organiser.
Can you tell us briefly, what is Promises? Promises is a multidisciplinary healthcare provider offering a holistic care model for
It is being passionate about the evidence-based science of recovering and treatment.
What advice would you have for someone who is dealing with addiction? It is challenging to overcome an addiction completely, because of how easy it is to slip back. Instead of fighting harder against the addiction, learn to let go and ‘surrender’. Once, there was a patient who told me, when I step out of here, I will forget how to drink. I asked the patient to imagine a pink elephant and the number 7 and forget about it completely. The next day he told me,
“I was trying so hard not to remember, but the pink elephant and number 7 are all I can think of all night!” In fact, when you try hard not to remember something, your subconscious mind will remember it more clearly. Honesty, openmindedness and willingness to go through change are the keys to recovery. Honesty and acceptance is the first step – putting down your ego and admitting you have a problem. Overcoming an addiction is often not about the addiction itself. To find out more, sign up for the National Addiction Recovery Conference from Jun 24 to 27 at www.promises. com.sg/narconference. whether it is directly attributed to growing up or just life experience. Staying relevant on YouTube is important and I’m always developing new strategies to appeal to viewers who are new to my content.
What is the worse comment you’ve received from a hater? Comments don’t really affect me anymore, so I can’t really pinpoint one comment that has really been THAT bad. Because as a character that exudes a bit of an attitude anyway. I can either choose to ignore them, or address them in an incredibly rude fashion, as Peter Chao only can.
YouTube comedian Peter Chao is coming to Singapore in June YouTube comedian superstar Peter Chao is known for his angry “Asian” videos where he speaks in an exaggerated Cantonese accent about current topics and pop culture. Peter has since gained a strong following. Before he comes to Singapore, we speak with him from his hometown in Canada.
You’ve been in the business for almost 6 years. How has your comedic style changed over the years? Comedy is always something that evolves over time,
How Asian are you in real life? I sometimes choose to drink Bubble Tea without the pearls, and I have never touched a Pokemon game. Aside from that, I’m pretty Asian. I’m terrible at driving, generally rude, and appreciate a good Jackie Chan flick on occasion.
Any future plans you could share with us? I’m looking into getting into acting and engaging in more live performances. I’ve recently involved myself in the world of professional wrestling, as that’s something I’ve grown up with ever since I was a child. Live performances are so intriguing because the immediate feedback is such a high.

You must have many fans coming up to you. what is the sweetest/ weirdest encounter you’ve had with a fan? I always have the sweetest fans come up to me asking for a photo, and I’m grateful for each and every one I have had the pleasure of meeting. However, some kid asked to untie my shoelaces once… that was pretty weird.
What would you be talking about during your show in Singapore? I’m going to be talking about my experiences on YouTube, and how it has changed my life and, of course, my relationship with Mama Chao. Along the way, I also hope to make a few people laugh.
What would you like to say to your fans in Singapore? My Singaporean fans have been tweeting me for ages, asking me when I’ll be visiting, so I’m beyond excited to meet my fans in Singapore in hopes of putting on a great show for them, and an experience they will always remember. NCIS: LA ready to thrill again
Chris O’Donnell once again leads the cast as Special Agent G Callen
The NCIS: Los Angeles team is back to kick more terrorist butt
The new season of NCIS: Los Angeles could well be the best ever of a series that has mesmerised viewers for five years NCIS: Los Angeles has always captivated and enthralled audiences, and the upcoming fifth season is set to be explosive from the very first minute. For the uninitiated, the NCIS: Los Angeles division is responsible for protecting the nation from some of the most dangerious criminals and terrorists in the world. Specialising in undercover and covert operations, and aided by state-of-the-art technology, its highly-trained agents risk life and limb to bring down threats to national security.
Agonising Screams… then Agonising Wait NCIS: Los Angeles Season 4 ended with the fans at the edges of their seats. Isaak Sidorov, the Russian arms dealer and antagonist was firmly in control as NCIS agents Sam Hanna
(LL Cool J) and Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) were left screaming in pain, enduring torture. As the tension reached its peak, the episode was suddenly over. So was the season. There was no “next week” to look forward to. Viewers complained; they wanted answers; they wanted more. They just had to wait... Chris O’Donnell, who plays Special Agent “G” Callen, says, “You want to make sure your new shows are even better than the old shows and I think it is a natural progression that they get better because the writing gets
better.” Now, that wait is over.
More Action & Suspense In the premiering episode of Season 5, we are immediately thrust back to where the action left off last season, as Kensi comes to Michelle’s rescue - last seen clinging for dear life out of a window... As Callen tries to track down the elusive Sidorov, Kensi will also have to get Sam and Deeks out of the traumatic ordeal and the arms dealer’s clutches. The torture that Sam and Deeks endured will leave scars and affect relationships between team members as the
season continues. The nuclear weapons are heard to be on a “ship”, but are still yet to be found. The NCIS: Los Angeles team must put their lives on the line to find and prevent the bombs from falling into the wrong hands.
Glowing Praise from the Actors The actors of the series believe this new season of NCIS: Lost Angeles is going to be another huge hit – perhaps the biggest ever! LL Cool J says, “Season 5 has some of the most interesting and dynamic moments that we have
had since we started the show. You see vulnerability, you see flaws, but you also see lots of humour.” Eric Christian Olsen, who plays Deeks, says, “This season is going to be great and the season premiere is starting off with one of the best episodes we have ever had.” NCIS: Los Angeles premieres on Mon, Jun 16, at 9.45pm, first and exclusively on AXN, StarHub TV Ch 511.

A Million Ways to Die in the West:
Hit and miss Two hours of silliness in the Old West brought to you by Ted’s Seth MacFarlane
A
Million Ways to die in the West is the latest comedy action Western from actor-director Seth MacFarlane, starring many familiar faces. The movie’s jokes may not bring laughout-loud moments from you at every turn but, even at its worst, its low-brow comedy is an easily enjoyable film that all can appreciate.
Everyone Wants to Kill You The story is set in the period of the Old West, where anything and everything was out to do one harm. From this idea sprouted a two-hour long slapstick comedy about an inept gunslinger going head to head with a master-class outlaw.
With any Old West film, there is always a fair maiden. Charlize Theron is the damsel over whom the two are fighting over. Theron plays the girlfriend of Clinch Leatherwood the notorious outlaw (played by Liam Neeson), who is not-sosecretly in love with the main-man Albert (played by MacFarlane himself).
I Know that Guy! Contrary to the low-brow jokes of the movie, mostly about poop, there is an incredible line-up of actors, most of whom have a comedic background. The audience will find familiar the faces of the actors such as Giovanni Ribisi (Ted, Gangster Squad), Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables, Red Riding Hood, Letters to Juliet) and Sarah Silverman (Wreck-it Ralph and “Futurama”). Not to mention, Neil Patrick Harris
Charlize Theron would be the main draw for most men

Words and Pictures: Love and argument This funny and romantic movie explores love and the beginning of an eternal debate over what’s more important: words or pictures Words and Pictures tackles a debate that philosophers have been having for centuries. Far from dry arguments and dull texts, Jack Marcus (played by the
hunky Clive Owen) and Dina Delsanto (played by French actress Juliette Binoche) are in love. As two teachers teaching the subjects they love in school, the situation soon descends into dramatic arguments and strong debates pitching both the lovers and the students against each other. But who is right and what will it mean for these two lovers as they explore a deeply important issue?
Lovers Divided Love is the central plot to this story. The debate is just the premise. What Dina and Jack truly care about is fighting for what they’re passionate for in an advanced public school setting. As teachers of writing and art, they couldn’t be further apart in their opinion. Writer Gerald Di Pego skilfully separates

Perhaps an ambitious take on familiar themes from Old West comedies like Blazing Saddles, MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West promises to be an overall rewarding experience for all who enjoy low-brow comedy and slapstick humour. For those who may feel the movie is not so worth their money, the beautiful cast is a consolation. the two characters in their beliefs, but joins them together in passion. Writing and art are both creative pursuits, and this is what he wants to illustrate. This is what ultimately draws the two characters together, to make them realise they’re deeply in love.
More than a Romance The romance is always something that happens behind the scenes. It’s never something that makes its way into the classroom. Ultimately, the story ends in a final competition between students of both classes. This friendly yet fierce competition demonstrates the coming-ofage aspect of this film. Students are drawn together and learn to appreciate other subjects and points of view. At the same time, they gain a new
level of appreciation for their own subjects. This practical approach to teaching is both in the spirit of competition and in the spirit of learning. Such messages are relevant to the real world, but at the same time they don’t take away from the coming-of-age of two classes and the romance going on outside of the classroom. This is a refreshing film, different from the many romantic movies that are out there. Scarlett Johansson stars as an otherworldly seductress who hunts men and undergoes a transformation Based loosely on Michel Faber’s 2000 novel of the same name, Under the Skin tells the story of a predatory female who cruises the streets of Scotland looking for men to seduce. Producer James Wilson found the original idea a really compelling and potentially cinematic one. The story explores what would happen if human beings become a food source for another species.
Through an Alien’s Eyes Instead of dramatizing that idea, director Jonathan Glazer (who wrote and directed 2004’s Birth) was more interested in helping his audience ‘re-see’ the world from an alien’s point of view – almost like the process we go through when we watch a nature
Is she who she appears to be?

Under the Skin: Scarlett seduction documentary about animals. Part road movie, part sci-fi, and even part reality [we explain near the end], Under the Skin is not sex-crazed, although the leading actress spends a good portion of the movie in various states of undress.
Earthly Transformation The ravishing Scarlett Johansson plays the lead character, Laura, a mysterious woman luring
men into a fatal mating dance. Ironically, her modus operandi appears to be that of her namesake in the Avengers movies, the Black Widow. Laura starts off as an emotionless alien that gradually becomes more human and vulnerable. We love how Laura’s curiosity and growing comfort in this new world is poetic and incredibly touching. If you’re not careful, you might find yourself lured in too.
Reality Bites? The role is more about intuition and gesture than dialogue, and Johansson has managed to pull off a beautiful performance like we’ve never seen before. This is perhaps her most challenging role so far, and she’s put in a stellar performance. Credit to Glazer who manages to place the Hollywood star incognito in the real world among ordinary people, much unlike on a typical movie
set. It turns out that most of the scenes involving Johansson speaking to men on the street were unscripted and filmed with secret cameras. Wow! This alone makes the film a must-watch. The product of an audacious cinematic experiment is a film of intriguing beauty and shocking gravity. All of this is fascinating; but we dare say it would not be as popular or interesting if not for the casting of the
beauteous Johansson, and her wonderfullystrange portrayal. UNDER THE SKIN [R21] DIRECTOR: Jonathan Glazer STARRING: Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan & Antonia CampbellHughes GENRE: Sci-fi, Thriller RUN LENGTH: 108 min RELEASE: Jun 12

Dutch: Fuss-free delicacies Number 5
Dutch food is sometimes described as bland and limited in variety but that’s not necessarily true. Here, we hunt down a few eateries that have cuisine from the Netherlands, often with an inventive take. Not surprisingly, many of them have good coffee as well.
Parsley and Thyme Parsley and Thyme is helmed by Dutch chef Dennis Kool, who brings a taste of his home region to our shores. The restaurant’s no-fuss wooden interior, dramatic red walls and tea lights set a welcoming ambience. Try Dutch winter staple Hete Bliksem (mashed potato and apples). The creamy wholegrain mustard sauce rounds off the dish beautifully. You can also find delectable dishes from other places, such as Australian Pork Sausage and French Duck Confit. 61 Kampong Bahru Road, Singapore 169368, Tel: 6226 2801
The Rice Table The Rice Table is the only restaurant in Singapore that serves an authentic Dutch
Rijsttafel. The Dutch term Rijsttafel refers to a rice table filled with a variety of meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, and sambal and other sauces to be taken with a helping of rice. The menu boasts an array of 14 buffet lunch items as well 19 buffet dinner dishes, presented in a modern Dutch way. Nonetheless, the dishes are Indonesian and will be familiar to Singaporeans. This is a legacy of colonial history, Sample the milder dishes first and work your way to the more fiery ones. International Building, 360 Orchard Road, #02-09/10, Singapore 238869, Tel: 6835 3783
Dutch Colony Coffee Co. Serving authentically delicious coffee, Dutch Colony is a true gem hidden among specialty stalls in PasarBella. Unwind with a rich and warm latte to combat rainy weather. Bar bites tend to almost be an afterthought at a watering hole but who says they can’t be stellar as well? We share some great ones
C
hilling out at your favourite watering hole doesn’t mean you have to condemn yourself to lousy frozen bar snacks trying to pass off as food. I searched high and low to bring you some of the best quality bar bites in Singapore that are worth using up your calories.
Manhattan Are you surprised a hotel bar made the list? I am not. Apart from the darkly sexy speakeasy style of the bar and intricately designed cocktails, the bar snacks are not to be missed. Inspired by the different quarters in New York, expect
bites such as Shrimp Ceviche Taco ($20) – a crispy wanton with Bloody Mary cocktail sauce, avocado and micro celery – and the Maine Lobster Roll ($26), a take on the lobster roll sans bread. For sweet snacks, The Big Apple Cheesecake ($10) is a great choice. It makes for good ‘food porn’ shot as well. Manhattan, Regent Singapore, Level 2, Singapore 249715, Tel: 6725 3377
Bedrock Bar & Grill The main restaurant at Bedrock Bar & Grill may be a bit too pricy for regular visits, but the bar menu is definitely more affordable. The Bedrock Angus Sliders ($18 for four) is a good way to have a taste of the popular beef dishes from the restaurant
without shelling out a bomb. Apart from that, arteryclogging Crispy Bacon ($15) with blue cheese dip is also available for a bit of sinful snacking. Bedrock Bar & Grill, 96 Somerset Road, Pan Pacific Serviced Suites, #01-05, Singapore 238163, Tel: 6238 0054
Shrimp Ceviche Tacos from Manhattan
Bacchanalia Helmed by a trio who spent years training at a three Michelin star restaurant, The Fat Duck in Britain, the a la carte menu can be on the pricey side but the bar snacks are more affordable. B Bar, as the bar portion of Bacchanalia is fondly known, serves snacks such as the Wagyu Cheese Toastie ($12), its take
on a cheesesteak sandwich with wagyu shortrib, aged cheddar and tomato salsa as well as the Falafel ($10), a fried chickpea dumpling accompanied with yoghurt and tzatziki sauce, should you be searching for a vegetarian option. Bacchanalia, 23 Coleman Street, Singapore 179806, Tel: 6509 1453
Number 5 One of the three staples owned by the Emerald Hill Group (its sister
bars are Que Pasa and Ice Cold Beer), Number 5 is known for its generous martini nights but the bar snacks also have patrons raving and craving for more. The Chicken Wings ($12-$18), which is the bar’s excellent take on prawn paste chicken, and the No. 5 Special ($19) with chorizo sausage and jalapeno peppers are crowd-pleasers, and for good reason. Number 5, 5 Emerald Hill Road, Singapore 229289, Tel: 6732 0818
Timbre at The Substation The popular Roasted Duck Pizza ($20) is an Asian take on the pizza that works beautifully with roasted duck breast, sautéed shiitake mushrooms in hoisin sauce and topped with crispy popiah skin and mozzarella cheese. The pizza menu is available until late, which makes it ideal for drinking sessions. Timbre at The Substation, 45 Armenian Street, Singapore 179936, Tel: 6338 8277

Macallan and Lalique – a fine crystal house – presents the latest masterpiece from the Lalique Six Pillars collection. This current Spiritual Home decanter is the fifth one in the collection, and it contains a very rare 62-year-old Macallan single malt whisky.
Crystal Clear Limited to only 400 individuallynumbered descanters, 40 of those are to be made available exclusively in the South East Asian region. Since its inception in 2005, the partnership has represented a marriage of the finest and rarest Macallan single malt whisky and bespoke designed decanters from crystal craftsman at Lalique. Macallan will be donating the proceeds of the sale from the first decanter valued at $33, 000 to Habitat for Humanity Singapore, whose mission is to eliminate poverty housing by building simple, decent houses with homeowners and volunteers.
Taste Liquid Gold The colour of the Macallan 62-year-old whisky itself is a
dark rich cherry shade, and it contains aromas of treacle toffee that leads into raisin and blood orange. You can also sense a slight taste of spice, as well as a smoky taste of oak. How does it taste to me? Mostly like dried fruits with ginger and woody flavours. It coats the mouth slightly and burns comfortingly when drunk neat. The alcoholic content for the whisky stands at 53.1 per cent, which is extremely rare for a whisky of this age. David Cox, Director of Fine & Rare Whiskies for The Macallan said, “We are privileged to have the opportunity to produce a magnificent 62-year-old, originally filled to American oak sherry seasoned casks in November 1950. This is the second oldest Macallan ever released by the distillery since

Happy 25th Birthday, Magnum! Magnum ice celebrated 25 years of ice cream goodness with a wondrous ice cream and chocolate party Recently, Magnum ice cream celebrated its 25th birthday with a lavish bash at the former Avalon club, at Marina Bay Sands. There was a free flow of Magnum ice cream, an open bar, and over 260kg of chocolate used for the party. Guests were kept satiated and occupied until the fashion show, complete with chocolate accessories.

macadamia nuts, almond flakes, and rose petals, resulting in a very nutty and slightly floral tasting Magnum ice cream. In my opinion, Magnum should consider putting my delicious creation on the market. Hint, hint. The slightly towering chocolate fountain supposedly broke records for being the tallest chocolate fountain in Singapore, standing at slightly over a metre tall, with 100kg of chocolate flowing through it.
Chocolatey Fashion Designer PAULINE.NING and 2am: dessertbar’s Janice Wong created a fashion show that was both unique and tasty, with the former showing her Spring/Summer line with edible accessories made out of chocolate. The intricate pieces came
in the form of rings, headpieces, collar pieces and even belts. A couple of models nearly fell over after stepping on some smashed chocolate on the ground, which led me to fear for their safety and the integrity of the chocolate jewellery, but luckily they steadied themselves just in time. The Magnum Singapore Pleasure Store makes its return, at the Customs House Terrace, should you want to have a shot at making your own Magnum ice cream creation, or if you’d like a closer look at the pieces of edible jewellery. The final installation of the Magnum Singapore Pleasure Store is open until Jul 23, from 12pm to 10.30pm daily.

First there was the Blemish Balm (BB) Cream, and then came the Colour Correction (CC) Cream. Now there’s the BB Cushion. The BB Cushion is a lighter and mousse-like foundation that gives a dewy effect to the skin while providing the appropriate amount of coverage. Here are a few for you to try.
Laneige Laneige is one of the pioneers in the BB Cushion ($59) craze and the latest permutation features a pore control in addition to the 6-in-1 function it already has such as sun protection, water resistance and soothing effect. The sponge also helps cool the skin down which I liked. Available at Laneige boutiques.
Sulwhasoo Known for the use of ginseng and natural ingredients in their products, the Evenfair Perfecting Cushion ($74) is great for oily skin as it uses a water base instead of oil. It creates a slight shiny finish which can be easily fixed with some finishing powder if you prefer a matte look. The coverage for this one is quite sheer if you prefer a lighter foundation. Available at Robinsons Orchard, Tangs outlets and Takashimaya.
Etude House The Precious Mineral Any Cushion ($29) from Etude House comes in Magic Pink, Green and Peach. This product is meant to be a base before your foundation as the corresponding colours even out the paleness, redness and unevenness in your skin tone. It provides sheer coverage and a dewy finish. Available at Etude House outlets.
PureHeal’s The K-beauty craze hits Sephora as well. PureHeal’s features natural products such as caviar, propolis, galactomyce and ginseng berry. The unique thing about the BB cushions from PureHeal’s is that it contains 27 per cent of the said ingredient. Available at Sephora.
Femmoss Every outfit needs a good bag. This dual-toned bag from Femmoss is made of suede leather with metal trim and a magnetic snap closure. It can easily hold all your essentials for the day. www.femmoss.com
ASOS
Innisfree I love the skincare products from Innisfree, especially the green tea range, and the Long Wear Cushion ($34) is great for the recent hot weather as it is smudge proof and doesn’t really flake as much. It contains sebum control powder to keep the face shinefree as well. Available at Innisfree in Takashimaya and Plaza Singapura.

OK, this isn’t exactly the same as the Korean BB cushion but Maybelline’s take on it, the BB Wonder Smooth Compact Cream ($19.90). This lightweight foundation containing minerals conceals imperfections, brightens the skin as well as gives it a velvety finish. It’s cheaper than most Korean brands as well. Separate Issues
Concrete Ideas This HDB flat at Fernvale Road in Sengkang extols the raw elegance of sharp lines and RAW surfaces The industrial-style interior has been a hot favourite in recent years. When done well, it can turn any standard cookie-cutter apartment into a unique home that’s bursting with personality. With that in mind, the owners of this four-room flat went in search of an interior design firm that is familiar with this particular style. They found interior design firm Artistroom, who stepped up to the plate with a fresh design concept for the 950sq ft flat.
Bare Necessities One of the first things the designers did was to give the floors a cement screed finish.
This provides a stark contrast against the white walls. Storage units were built to complement the TV wall, while track lights keep the room well illuminated. To lend a spacious feel, everything was streamlined and used sparingly, including the minimal furniture additions. The all-white look was chosen for the kitchen, but the minor details separate the space from sleek, contemporary kitchens. The most prominent of which is the choice of white mosaic tiles, which are larger than typical mosaic tile formats. The dark grouting helps to accentuate the grid lines on the walls and further alludes to the industrial look of the apartment. This well-designed space also provides a place for everything, including wall-mounted racks for various kitchen tools.
Track lights keep the room well illuminated
Three bedrooms are plenty for a household of two, and with the extra space, they were able to accommodate more room for the wardrobe and the study. Leaving the master bedroom relatively simple with only the bed and a vanity table, Artistroom converted an adjacent bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe. The walk-in wardrobe is a neat and organised space with racks, shelves and drawers lined along two opposite walls. Sunlight enters the space through large windows, thus bringing light to the dark finishes in the space. The Artistroom designers turned the other bedroom into a study. They also fitted the room with a wardrobe, so the room can be repurposed in the future without need for additional renovation.
Here is our pick of furniture and accessories that can solve your small-space woes Mix and match shelves, cupboards and chests to turn an empty span of wall into a modular storage and display system. You can customise your designs to fit into almost any space, including tight corners and awkward niches. $19.90 upwards, from IKEA

Kampong Ayer in Brunei preserves thousands of years of heritage with 40 villages built on wooden structures over the water

ne of the great things about travel is to see how the locals live and the lifestyles that they share. In Brunei, I am fascinated by a large community comprising about 40 villages – with about 40,000 inhabitants – that reside on stilt houses, wooden walkways and planks over the Brunei River. It’s an entire town built on water in an area that is part of the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, after Brunei Bay.
Kampong Ayer is the world’s largest water village and the Portuguese explorers of yore called it “the Venice of the East”. It is a feat of construction that encompasses homes, mosques, shops, a fire station, restaurants, schools and a hospital, all linked together by a 36-km network of boardwalks, planks and wooden alleys.
Modern Amenities in Traditional Living If you think Kampong Ayer is an old, derelict village, think again. It is modern and thriving, with Internet access, air-conditioning, satellite TV, plumbing and an electrical system. Water taxis and personal boats ply the waters
to bring passengers to and fro. Approaching Kampong Ayer from a distance on your boat, it looks like a typical Malay wooden kampong that’s spread out like a floating mirage on the waters. Chickens run around and colourful laundry hangs out to dry, flapping in the breeze. As you get closer, you’ll discover unique architectural heritage.
