World Cup Fever

Thrilling World Cup football & shock defeats Jefferson Bernardes / Shutterstock.com

With shock upsets for Spain and Uruguay, what other exciting prospects can we look forward to? This past week has been a highlyeventful one for football on the world stage. The opening games of the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup have seen some of the biggest shock defeats in a World Cup, including the biggest loss ever for a defending world champion. Here are some of the biggest jawdroppers from last week, as well as games to look forward to in the upcoming days.

Brazil’s Samba has Begun For the first time in World Cup history, the opening goal of the tournament was an own goal. Nonetheless, the samba boys of the host nation managed to recover to celebrate a 3-1 victory over Croatia. The dance has truly begun.

Dutch destroy Reigning Champions Many football fans have been doubting that Spain’s aging squad can hold on to its title of world champions but no one could have predicted a 5-1 thrashing by the Netherlands. The “Clash of the Titans” has resulted in an embarrassing shock defeat for Spain to its 2010 World Cup runnerup rivals the Netherlands. To say the Dutch destroyed the Spaniards would be an understatement.

Neymar scored two goals and led the samba boys to convincing victory in their first game

Clash of the Titans II Many would have watched European powerhouses Germany and Portugal go head to head. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal getting mauled 4-0 by the German juggernaut was certainly not what most had expected.

vs Uruguay vs England, 20 Jun After Uruguay’s embarrassing defeat to Costa Rica in their opening game of the tournament, it takes on England who suffered a similar fate at the hands of Italy. Who will recover first and score their first points of the tournament? This match-up promises to be actionpacked for all 90 minutes, with both teams out to battle for victory.

vs Italy vs Costa Rica, 21 Jun Can the Italians score another win against potential dark horses, lively Costa Rica? Costa Rica had stunned the world in trouncing Uruguay in its opening game. Will the Azzuri prevail and let their Italian magic flow? Or will their backline that is devoid of legends let them down?

vs Switzerland vs France, 21 Jun Both Switzerland and France won their opening games. Which team will be able to keep up its winning streak? On paper, France has a much stronger team with stars such as Karim Benzema, who scored a brace in the opening game for Les Bleus. One week into the tournament, champions have fallen and challengers have risen. Are you sure you’ve picked the right team to win the World Cup?

The attractive Amber Stevens of “Greek” adds to the babe factor

22 Jump Street: Too cool for school Familiar college themes are revisited as comedy superstar Jonah Hill and all-round hunk Channing Tatum return to go undercover once more Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Few words can aptly describe the brilliance of this powerpacked combo or partnership. Now, 22 Jump Street brings Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) together once again as undercover cops, this time in a local college. Temperatures further rise and the action gets wilder. 22 Jump Street is the sequel to 2012’s 21 Jump Street, the film adaptation of the original TV series starring a very young (and strikingly handsome) Johnny Depp.

The Winning Formula This time, 22 Jump Street has a somewhat different setting and storyline but still succeeds in repeating the hilarity of 21 Jump Street. Jenko and Schmidt unite in a course of amateurish undercover operations and it is almost tragic at times. The movie presents similar-styled antics as in

the previous installation, with fresh jokes revolving around its winning formula – the unlikely partnership remains comedic gold as it did in the first movie. Whether or not you are convinced, Tatum and Hill have more to give in this new movie.

Movie, in which Tatum voiced Superman. Nevertheless, where Tatum lacks, Hill is there to cover him and vice versa. This partnership is pretty good and amusing.

A Brilliant Partnership

To Catch or Not To?

As Tatum himself proclaims, he had never identified himself with comedy until lately. The star that numerous women swoon over is better known for his parts in action-packed films such as White House Down and G.I. Joe as well as romantic hits like The Vow. In fact, 22 Jump Street’s executive producer Tania Landau praises Tatum’s athleticism in the film, which brought a level of stunts and slapstick comedy that was completely fresh. Tatum himself testifies to the comedic brilliance of his co-star, Hill, as well as the comedic geniuses behind the show, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Lord and Miller recently cooperated on writing and directing The Lego

22 Jump Street promises to be an entertaining sequel, bringing familiar scenes or recipes for success in a new school setting. Together with a line-up of up-andcoming actors in the supporting cast, this movie is a must for lovers of 21 Jump Street.

Hill and Tatum have an excellent “bromance”

It’s easy to forget those who are important to us – this heart-warming comedy drama teaches a message of peace and reconciliation The Angriest Man in Brooklyn explores something close to home. Henry, the pain and distress caused by this error is nothing in comparison to the feeling of being able to return to the family fold. The viewer is left to decide how he or she feels about the plot. Some might believe it’s the best possible thing to happen to Henry, whereas others may see it as a cruel joke played by an extremely negligent doctor. Every character has its own personality and each actor brings his or her experience and nuances to this film. With its fair share of comedy and touching moments, this is a film to watch.

The plot of The Angriest Man in Brooklyn is masterfully-crafted by writer Daniel Taplitz, and maintains a balance between mistakes and the greater good. On one hand, you have a doctor who has made a catastrophic mistake, which could cause her to lose her career. On the other hand, for

Ba Chor Mee Pasta? Local food gets the fine dining and fusion treatment

L

ocal food is getting more and more innovative with the emergence of fusion as well as fine dining takes on our familiar and beloved local dishes. However, is local food evolving into fodder for atas (Malay for “high”) taste buds? Then again, why not? If better ingredients are used, who says local food can’t be “fine” as well? These are a few finer and more exciting options for local-inspired cuisine.

From The Clifford Pier’s dessert menu, its take on goreng pisang comes with coconut ice cream and gula Melaka. The ice cream flavours feature local flair and inspirations such as pandan, kopi o and teh tarik.

New aromas at Dempsey Another place to relax over a cup of coffee has opened in Dempsey with the addition of Becasse The smell of freshly-baked goods at Dempsey Hill has gotten stronger. You may be familiar with Becasse, the artisan patisserie and bakery at Ion Orchard, but it now takes on a larger and airier space in the expatriate enclave of Dempsey Hill. The new outlet at Dempsey Hill also features an open seafood bar lined with oysters, lobsters, jumbo prawns, Moreton Bay bugs, and Alaskan crab. Overall, the menu is also way more extensive, with a wide range of dishes available.

Much More than Bread The breakfast/brunch options at Becasse are quite typical, except for the Sticky Date Pancakes ($13). Excuse me, while I wipe

the drool from my face... The pancake batter is infused with the dates, resulting in a fluffy, rich pancake covered in butterscotch sauce, bananas, and vanilla ice cream. Sticky Date for breakfast? Yes, please! The sharing menu features tons of goodies such as the Homemade Boursin Cheese ($12), cream cheese with onion and chives with rocket salad, beetroot and compressed fruit and nuts. I love boursin cheese; it feels like eating solid sour cream and onion flavoured chips, minus the potatoes. The one at Becasse is thick, rich, and fresh.

Feedlot Fresh The meats available at Becasse range from pork to beef... and even rabbit! They do a Rabbit Schnitzel ($27) with fennel and radicchio coleslaw. However, my favourite was the Hand Cut Steak Tartare

Vegetables can fill you up as well as meat, as proven by vegetarian restaurant Sufood A Taiwanese vegetarian restaurant, Sufood partners with Chinese restaurant Putien to bring Asian-Italian, vegetarianfriendly dishes to Singapore. What I like about Sufood is its affordability. With an eightcourse set meal available for $25++, you have a good deal.

Veggie Good The meal starts off with the Sufood Appetiser, comprising a trio of Japanese yuca root drizzled with blueberry coulis,

($18), mixed with a raw egg, horseradish mayonnaise, frisee lettuce, and salmon crisps. The horseradish mayonnaise added a slight kick to the raw meat. I’m not going to recommend the cakes for dessert because I feel that the Macaron Milkshakes ($8) are must-try. The macarons that go with them are bigger than most, and can give you excellent food pictures. My Salted Caramel and Toffee Popcorn milkshake came with a bright blue macaron that had a salted caramel filling and toffee popcorn adorning on the top, as well as chocolate popping candy for a surprising texture. They also serve Dark Chocolate and French Vanilla milkshakes. Plan your next brunch date here! Becasse, Block 10 Dempsey Hill, Singapore 247697, Tel: 6479 8119

Sufood’s super veggies

a stack of oriental white snowflake greens, and a savoury tomato jelly. It’s served before a cup of Rosemary Breadsticks with sweet mustard and blueberry dip. For the salads, I chose the Mushroom Salad. It consists of button and shiitake mushrooms with steamed broccoli and sliced cherry tomatoes in a vinegar dressing – a lovely garlicky entrée, in my opinion. I also got a Root Soup with burdock and lotus root. I didn’t really like the Cream of Pumpkin Soup since it was drizzled with soy milk, which resulted in a slightly odd taste.

Filling Meals The idea that vegetarian food is not filling is completely quashed with the main courses that are available. The Homemade Vegetable Calzone is my favourite. With stuffed tomatoes, broccoli, cheese, pesto sauce, artichokes, and mushrooms,

a calzone has never been healthier. There are also dishes such as the Conchiglie Mushroom Bake, made in a mild curry sauce and asparagus. But the one that wins the prettiest plating is definitely the Baked Potato Al Funghi. Fibrous steamed king oyster mushrooms are drizzled with Italian herb vinaigrette, with a side of brulee-baked potato and stuffed with mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. The star of the dessert section is definitely the Sesame Panna Cotta. A thin layer of sesame paste, caramelisation and walnuts sit atop a creamy milk pudding, creating a light but decadent dessert with an aromatic fragrance. Round off your meal from Sufood’s range of freshlysqueezed juices. Sufood, Raffles City Shopping Centre, 252 North Bridge Road, #02-19, Singapore 179103, Tel: 6333 5338 By Cheryl Chia

Omakase Burger extends its beefy goodness to the city centre with its new outlet at Wisma Atria If you haven’t heard of Omakase Burger by now, you’re missing out on a lot. The first outlet opened in The Grandstand back in 2012 to rave reviews and long snaking queues of burger enthusiasts waiting for a bite of its juicy beef patties encased in buns. Banker-turned-entrepreneur Cheng Hsin Yao brought his take on American-style burgers with juicy USDA premium blend handmade beef patties in pillow soft buns that unfortunately did not absorb the meat juice too well. With the new opening, Cheng has gone on a rampage hunting down a better bun and, thankfully, he found it.

Buns and More The new buns are slightly more malleable and less crumbly. I realised that they absorbed the meat juices a little better and the burger, towards the end of the meal, was less soggy than it used to be previously.

So, kudos to for that. The outlet at Wisma Atria also serves some exclusive items such as Uncured Applewood Smoked Bacon made from hormone-free and antibiotic-free pigs without added nitrites or nitrates. The bacon can be found in burgers such as the Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger ($17.90), and the Ultimate Cheeseburger ($19.50). I did like the Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger, which was cooked to medium rare with American slices and Omakase’s house sauce. However, the bacon itself tasted like, well, any other bacon. But I guess I’m not as picky about bacon as I am about beef patties.

Old School McDonald’s Taste What really took me back to my childhood was the Beef Tallow Fries ($5.95-$6.95). Do you remember the taste of McDonald’s fries before they switched to vegetable oil, back in the mid-1990s? That’s the exact taste that you get from the Beef Tallow Fries. The fries are fried in freshlyrendered beef tallow for a savoury aroma that makes them more fragrant. They do have fries that have been fried in vegetable oil as well but, if animal fat is more your thing, you can look forward to the addition of Duck Fat Fries in the near future. Talk about artery-clogging goodness! Omakase Burger’s second outlet is located at Wisma Atria, 435 Orchard Road, #01-02/03/37 to 41, Singapore 238877, Tel: 6737 3218.

Oh, Honey! Attract the butterflies with useful and fragrant products from Vecua Honey Forest Vecua Honey Forest is a brand of Japanese origin. Having used its products before, I am aware of their lovely scent and light yet moisturising texture. I was not disappointed with the next two I tried.

Smell like a Flower One downside of using hand cream is the sticky texture after, but the Vecua Wonder Honey Dew Cooling Aromatic Hand Gel ($19) in Flower Gelee does not give that feeling. The cooling hand gel contains ingredients such as peppermint leaf extract, lemongrass extract, honey and eucalyptus leaf extract.

It also has 70 per cent honey water for optimum moisture retention. The gel-like texture glides on easily and is absorbed quickly with no residue, leaving a smooth barrier that protects hands from dryness – perfect for our humid weather. Other hand creams from Vecua Honey Forest have also had positive reviews online. Justina Quek commented, “Having used a whole range of hand creams from other brands, I’ve got to say Vecua’s is the best! It is non-greasy, lightly fragranced and instantly hydrates my hands! Highly recommended to everyone who wishes to get well-moisturised skin.”

Timor-Leste: Emerging tourist hotspot After decades of political strife, the East Timor Republic has refreshed efforts to welcome eco-tourists and adventure seekers – you should visit this new frontier A padi field right next to a lush rainforest The white sand beach of Areia Branca near Dili

Keep your eyes peeled for Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor. Timor-Leste’s capital city and port, Dili, is undergoing transformation in a bid to attract more visitors. The rich cultural heritage of the Timorese culminates in a melting pot of cuisines – Chinese, Mediterranean and Thai, on top of the Portuguese and Indonesian dishes. This results in an interesting mix, and curry is a hot favourite! About 85 per cent of the population relies on subsistence farming. TimorLeste’s colonial past is reflected in the imposing government buildings in the city of Dili. Still a frontier in many ways, many streets here are unnamed. You might wonder how mail is delivered. Via rented post boxes at the Post Office, of course!

Busy Dili Taxis are plentiful in Dili during the day, charging US$5 for a 6-km trip to the airport. Most villagers, however, hop on the mikrolet (mini-buses) which shuttles between cities and villages. Around mid-April or early May, the streets of Dili come alive with music, songs and dance of the Carnival de Timor – a multicultural parade sanctioned by the tourism ministry. The all-day merry-making peters out into the night and every participant goes home happy. You can buy tropical fruits from stalls manned by women at Dili’s waterfront. Nightspots keep the area busy until late. The city jewel is the air-conditioned Timor Plaza shopping complex, housing a food court and a hotel with free Wi-Fi and even airport shuttle.

Adventure Seekers Endowed with a tropical climate, TimorLeste will also appeal to adventure seekers. Divers can check out cool diving sites off Ataúro Island and the Ombai Strait; hikers can take on challenging trails up the highlands, where a mountain belt dominates the forest landscape. Another tourist draw is the white-sand beaches which hug the shoreline near Dili. This is a unique paradise.

Eye on Ecotourism The land’s rich biodiversity in its eastern region opens up fresh opportunities for ecotourism. The protected Nino Konis Santana National Park covers 124,000ha of tropical rainforest and pre-historic archaeological sites. It is also a bird sanctuary for rare and endemic species. A plethora of marine life, including coral reefs, thrives beneath the waters of Ombai Strait. This beauty can only be described in so many words. You have to see and experience this frontier for yourself. Air Timor (under Silkair) flies thrice weekly from Singapore to Dili. On arrival at Dili Airport, you have to fill in and submit a tourist visa application form with US$30 (cash). An airport departure tax of US$10 (cash) is payable upon exit. By Harry Tan

Beautifully-crafted & timeless

you with long-term dividends. Solid wood furniture is desirable for the honesty and integrity in traditional workmanship methods such as wood joinery.

Beautifully-crafted wooden furniture imbues the hearth with warmth and possesses timeless heirloom qualities Wooden furniture is evergreen because it is indubitably strong enough for furniture applications, is sustainable as a construction material and outwits, outplays and outlasts like no other material. Wood is valued in furniture construction for its innate classic beauty, natural warmth and durability. Wooden furniture matches both traditional and contemporary decors. Wood instantly introduces nature into a home and adds a beautiful counterpoint to the digital gadgetry so prolific in our homes today. There is, too, something very fundamental about the feeling of enduring strength that wood offers, accentuated by its organic and unique grains. Wood finishes enhance the tactile beauty of wood further.

Craft Prized as Much as Wood Craft is prized as much as the wood that is worked; master carpenters are still much esteemed today. Hans Wegner was an internationally-acclaimed Danish furniture designer who had a strong affinity for solid,

Strength of Solid Workmanship

Picket&Rail’s Chicago Square Centre Table is constructed from rugged American poplar wood with gunmetal accents

Picket&Rail’s Roly Armchair is inspired by Hans Wegner’s “The Chair” design, the most significant of all of his chair designs (1949)

Interlocking wood joints utilise the distinctive material properties of solid wood to increase the wood’s sturdiness, flexibility and even appearance. Nails in wooden furniture tend not to hold up well in humid weather conditions. Popular quality wood joints are dovetails, a box joint in which the diagonally cut fingers of wood are locked together, and mortise and tendon joints, where the stub (tendon) fits tightly into a hole (mortise) cut for it. The dovetail joint is exceptionally strong and also adds visual embellishment. It is a hallmark of fine woodworking. Solid wood gives itself away visually with its grain patterns (especially on the edges) and wood joints that join slabs of wood.

Reliability from Picket&Rail

Picket&Rail’s Americana solid wood collection features thoughtfully-chamfered edges (the distinctive “diamond cut” detailing) and an attractive satin-smooth finish

carved wood. His 1949 Round Chair has been called the world’s most beautiful chair with its handsome, simple functionality and elegant joints.

Solid wood, much like leather, also ages very gracefully. Furniture should not be disposable; furniture pieces are investments that should reward

Thin sheets of wood between drawers act as dust panels, reinforce structural rigidity and secure the drawers’ contents. Picket&Rail also utilises reinforcing corner blocks to brace its wooden furniture further. For dining tables, solid wood can’t be beat. Studies have proven that wood has natural antimicrobial properties.

Picket&Rail’s well-crafted solid wood dining tables offer longevity, simplicity, capacity and even expandability in some cases. Meals are made even more pleasurable for dining off wood.

Character & Depth of Wood Wood also develops its own character and depth over time. Solid wood is both substantial, like Picket&Rail’s bestselling Americana collection, and relatively easy to repair and be restored and refinished. Wood maintenance is simple and mainly relies on regular dusting with a soft cloth and protection from heat and liquids. Wood is recyclable and sustainably-sourced wood minimises the impact on our environment, especially when the long life-expectancy of wood, when properly taken care of, is factored in. Picket&Rail favours ecofriendly and durable plantation rubberwood (that maximises the utility of rubber trees), American poplar wood (which is the tallest hardwood species in the United States), beech, ash, American maple, white oak and American walnut.
