is Hercules What do demigods do in their spare time?
N
otorious for his incredible quests of slaying beasts and armies, what comes next for the legendary Hercules? This latest interpretation of the famous Greek legend stars none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular hero.

Johnson’s portrayal of Hercules may be one like you’ve never seen before, as he brings to life director Brett Ratner’s reimagining of the demigod.
Nonetheless, Hercules is a hero we can relate to – one with amazing gifts, yet struggles to live up to his own lore. After his glorious battles against lions and hellhounds, Hercules now takes to the streets with his band of brothers, cashing in on his legend. He sells his services as a mercenary for gold alongside his five loyal followers. When the land of Thrace is thrown into turmoil by a civil war, Hercules can no longer disavow his potential as the son of Zeus. He must now embrace his own myth in order to help the rightful king restore the land of Thrace. His limits, though incredible, will be tested by never-beforeseen villains and beasts.
How convincing is Dwayne Johnson as Hercules?
The Lion and the Hydra Legend has it that Hercules once performed the mythical “12 labours” – 12 tasks so daunting that they were impossible to mortal Man. Already, in the trailer, we get a glimpse of the Nemean Lion and the Lernaean Hydra. Both are tremendous beasts. Ratner’s inspiration for the re-vamp of this timeless classic came from a comic book series titled “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” by Radical Studios. Written by Steve Moore, the comic thrilled readers with the tale of a fallen warrior seeking redemption. This is a slightly different angle or tale from what most people are familiar with.
Just like how Hercules was destined for greatness, Ratner believes that Johnson, the former WWE wrestler and action movie star, was born to play this role. Johnson recalls Hercules being the first project on his mind when he first broke into Hollywood. He took this role so seriously that he hit the ground running with an eight-month training regimen to improve on his already god-like physique. It won’t be surprising if both men and women were to drool. Keep your eyes peeled (as if we need to tell you) for gorgeous model Irina Shayk who stars as Megara. Though, she is not the only babe in the film. Norwegian Ingrid Bolsø Berdal is the huntress Atalanta This third “swords and sandals” film for the year – after The Legend of Hercules and Pompeii – is a slightly-different take on the tale of Hercules that has been told and re-told over and over. You decide if this will be a blockbuster or an epic flop. Minuscule: An epic tiny battle
In Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants, the remains of a picnic in a peaceful forest trigger a ruthless war between two tribes of ants! Upon birth, the tiniest and the bravest ladybird takes off alone to discover the forest. Very soon, he encounters a gang of flies and falls into a crevasse. Wounded, the ladybird starts to wander, and finally finds refuge in remains of a picnic. He soon befriends one of the black ants, Mandible, and helps him save his anthill from the assault of terrible red ant warriors, led by the fearsome Butor. The two warring factions battle over the prize of the precious sugar box. All this is merely the beginning of an epic adventure not unlike The Lord of the Rings, albeit at very low ground.

Exceptional Natural Backdrop The film immerses audiences in an authentic natural environment in the heart of the Mercantour and Ecrins National Parks in southern France. In fact, an opening montage of breathtaking forest landscape sets the scene for this animated bug saga. The natural setting reveals more magic as it changes from prairies and waterfalls to the dense forest that extends to entire valleys, all in an infinite palette of colours and shapes. Credit must go to the filmmakers for their hard work to capture such natural splendour on screen.
Dialogue-free, Magical World of Minuscule The mostly-insect cast barely opens its mouths and hardly makes facial expressions. They do, however, gleefully toot
funny noises that can sometimes be quite adorable. How is the movie going to sustain our interest throughout without the chatter that we’re used to? Well, we must say it is quite the visual spectacle, and the multi-legged characters can be quite endearing. With the protagonists set in handsome outdoor footage of France, writersdirectors Thomas Szabo and Hélène Giraud have created a world that’s neither entirely fake nor completely real; while using a simple yet quirky narrative to engage audiences. Furthermore, the closeup photography is so well-done that you’d want to reach out and touch the ladybugs flying in mid-air. The entire product leaves you marvelling over how the filmmakers managed to pull it off so beautifully. While the insects might be familiar to some audiences of the original TV series, the film is perfectly fine for moviegoers who will be discovering the world of Minuscule for the first time. This unlikely, sweetlytold tale of friendship and adventure in the insect world promises to be entertaining and irresistible for the young and old. o promote the latest Marvel superhero movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, stars Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista and director James Gunn came to Singapore. Here are some of their responses to questions on Guardians of the Galaxy.
DAVE BAUTISTA: DRAX THE DESTROYER
Did the long hours preparing your make-up have any effect on your attitude towards the film? Not at all. Drax is the only role I wanted to do like this. I don’t have any plans to play superheroes in other films. Drax is like a dream role for me but I do want to do other stuff as well – roles where I’m not always in make-up.
Were there any interesting or funny incidents during filming?
If I had to choose one moment, it was that one day they decided to have a dance-off on the set. James (Gunn) was also involved in that. He had a few hundreds of crew members and extras dancing; it was kind of ridiculous.
There are rumours that when you heard you got the role, you shed a tear. Is this true?
I literally broke down; it wasn’t just a few tears. I was on the way to the gym when my manager called and put my agent on the phone. He said, “Congratulations, Mr Drax.” I turned the car around and went home; I was just such a mess when I heard the news. It was big news for me and I could never explain how big this was for me. It was life changing. It was hard for me to leave wrestling to pursue acting, and this to me was the role of a lifetime.

You’ve done several sci-fi roles such as in Star Trek and Avatar. What is it about these films that attract you?
How difficult was it to find the perfect Star Lord?
It’s good stories. They usually come with good directors. There is something very fascinating about working with people that are able to imagine the unimaginable. Also, as a woman and as a woman of colour, the roles ‘on Earth’ are a little too typical for me. I’m either someone’s wife or girlfriend. I do love those roles as well, every now and then, but not all the time.
Is it true that during one of the fight sequences, you almost broke Chris Pratt’s wrist?
I did? I think I did. I hit him really hard one time and he said it was okay but then I saw him kind of limp away.
We had a shortlist of five people we thought were pretty good for the role but none of them was quite right. When it came to Chris, we knew it within 20 seconds of the audition. Chris Pratt is the biggest movie star in the world; people just don’t know it yet. Not only do I think Chris is one of the biggest movie stars in the world today, I think he is in the line with [sic] the Gary Coopers and the Clint Eastwoods. That is the kind of rare talent that he is.
What can we expect from this film that is different from other Marvel movies?
I think the biggest difference is me, and the cast of weirdoes we have working on this set – the actors, the designers – we really wanted to create something completely new. We wanted to make something relevant to the
older films but something that no one has ever seen before. We didn’t feel restrained by Marvel; we were creating this movie not in relation to Marvel movies but in relation to all movies in general. That was probably the biggest difference. Be sure to catch Guardians of the Galaxy when it opens in cinemas on Jul 31.

ake sure you come on an empty stomach for the Crazy About Crabs buffet at Brizo Restaurant & Bar, Park Hotel Clarke Quay. At this lavish buffet, you’ll get to dive into a resplendent myriad, from cold selections and roasts to daily bakes and nourishing soups but best of all the sought-after crab and crustacean dishes. The tantalising spread on offer checks all the boxes for any crab-lover, and looking at it certainly whet my appetite.
A Crab-ilicious Feast Brizo’s Signature Heavenly Fragrance Crab makes its debut in this buffet promotion. This delicacy encapsulates Chinese, Malay and Indian flavours, and was stir-fried with crispy bits of dried shrimp with savoury homemade sauce (made from bird’s eye chillies and curry powder). This winning combination resulted in an aromatic and truly flavourful dish. What really stole the limelight on the night was the simplistic
A full-fledged crab-ilicious feast Steamed XO Crab served in dim sum baskets. The flesh was firm and succulent, and steaming it brought out its natural flavour well. I couldn’t resist trying the Salted Egg Crab that was enrobed in a generous amount of rich salted egg sauce. However, I was a little disappointed, as it turned out to be a tad too mushy for my liking.
Hits & Misses Among the dishes that use fresh mud and flower crabs, I’d say Baked Crab with Lime Butter & Tarragon, Laksa Crab and Crab Bouillabaisse are the more notable ones. I was particularly fond of the Laksa Crab due to its lip-smacking gravy which, truthfully, overshadowed the crab that was added separately. Anyone who lays his or her eyes on the deep fried station
your crab feast, head over to dessert paradise! The delightful dessert spread features jelly and mousse in shooters, macaroons, durian pengat, assorted cakes, Nonya kueh, Magnum mini, the tempting chocolate fondue, and more options that will satisfy your sweet tooth.

Rang Mahal brings more to Table Indian fine dining establishment Rang Mahal sets up bistro-style Table
I loved the Chilli Cheese Kulzza – a type of Indian pizza with cheddar, chillies and fresh coriander – as well as the Punjabi Samosa. The latter is definitely the king of all samosas due to its sheer size, buttery pastry and potato stuffing within. The Bombay Pani Puri is a good opening dish with mini crunchy semolina puffs that come with chilled spice water and sweet tamarind chutney. The main courses did not disappoint either, with dishes such as Tandoori Mushroom and Tandoori Paneer Tikka. These vegetarian options were equally,

The dishes from the main course come accompanied with Cucumber Raita and freshly-baked Naan. The desserts also come with a dose of panache. Table’s Pop is a sugar-free popsicle made with fresh raspberries and coconut infused with chia seeds, while Saffron Rasmalai is a fresh cheese dumpling in reduced saffron and cardamom-flavoured milk.

I had to try it. Never mind the snaking queue and the 45-min wait. I was in Las Vegas and I only had time for one buffet, so I figured I should go for the one that is ranked #1 in Vegas by USA Today!
500 Daily Offerings That’s how I found myself at Bacchanal at Caesars Palace where there was a promise of over 500 daily offerings. Being Singaporean and trained in the art of buffets, I started asking myself, “How would I be able to stomach 500 different types of food in one sitting? What should I attack first? What are the must-eats?” The spread on offer is really overwhelming, with nine different stations offering a taste of flavours from around the world. I went straight for the oysters and the king crabs. Then followed up with the prime rib, grilled lamb chops, sliders, southern fried chicken, sausages… I could keep going but I know this is torture.

Best in the World? Food, Food Everywhere There was also a pasta station and an Asian section with Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese, but it was the dessert section that was truly amazing! Baked-to-order soufflés, at least 20 different types of cakes, tarts crème brulee, lots of ice cream, macaroons, chocolates and, overall, just an obscene amount of food.
So, is it really the #1 buffet in the world? We have champagne brunch spreads in Singapore that could rival it, so I would say no, but for US$40 for dinner, I thought it was a really, really good spread, at great value and just the perfect way to pig out on all your American favourites. Las Vegas is truly Sin City.

As his reward, he was made “Rajah” of Sarawak and he chose Kuching as the capital. The Astana, a palace built by his successor, Charles Brooke, for his wife, is still one of the big tourist draws in the city. While the Astana is not always open to the public, its cultivated gardens are. Kuching is not all about history though. It is a friendly melting pot of cultures where the visitor will find much to enjoy.

The traditional food of Sarawak, from various ethnic cultures, is legendary. The variety available is also highlypleasing. Must-try dishes include Sarawak Kolo Mee and Kuching Laksa, among many others. When you’re done stuffing yourself with yummy food, you can continue sightseeing. With such a name, it is not surprising that the city has a very unusual Cat Museum. There are also many incarnations of its namesake adorning the city. If you’re the active type and hankering for adventure, you can always climb Mount Santubong. It is about 35km outside of Kuching, and it rises to about 810m.
