The thrilling Sentosa Buskers Festival 2014 returns this September This September, we see the return of the muchanticipated annual Sentosa Buskers Festival. A platform for international acts and returning favourites, one can expect an exciting line up of performers who will all add to the electric atmosphere. From Sep 6 to 14, starting from 4.30pm, the stretch from Beach Plaza to Palawan Beach will turn into a riproaring performance arena as Sentosa Buskers Festival 2014 has expanded to an exciting line-up of 19 performers with over 200 shows showcasing different genres of acts.

Exciting Shows International buskers such as Guinness World Record holder Aerial Manx (Australia), one of the few sword-swallowers in the world, and Les Dudes (Canada and Switzerland), who perform skilled circus acts including juggling flaming objects and uni-cycling, will be showing their skills at the festival. Our local talent is not too shabby either with Way Past Curfew – talented siblings Christian, 12, and Shannon, 10. Christian

taught himself to play the piano at age 5 and the pair has been performing together since. Other performers also include The Two Tall Guys (magic and comedy).

Come have fun! We‘re also looking forward to the return of some local talent such as tribal group Flaming Matrix, who used to spit fire and thrill the audience at the show at the old Musical Fountain. Expect more flashy pyro-tricks. There is also an interactive “Let Me Try” zone, where guests can try balancing on slack rope, walking on a globe and spinning plates. Don’t forget lots of photo opportunities with the buskers and roving characters at the festival. This year, part of the Sentosa Buskers Festival 2014 will also head to the heartlands, making these performance arts more accessible to Singaporeans. Sentosa Buskers Festival 2014, 6 to 14 Sep, 4.30pm onwards, Palawan Beach and Beach Plaza, Tel: 1800 736 8672. Visit buskers. sentosa.com.sg to find out more.

RED CARD FOOTBALL FEVER

Juicy news & tips on the EPL & the best of world football

Chelsea set for Champions League stroll Diego Costa is likely to continue his scoring streak in Europe

Will Mario Balotelli help Liverpool to regain European glory, or will he cause more problems?

The Champions League draw is out and Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are prepared to discover their fate – who will go through and who will face an early exit?

and getting a result in those games (home and away) will be key in determining top spot. Finishing second in the group has been their downfall in recent seasons, so Arsene Wenger had better not mess this up again. Prediction: 2nd in group

The UEFA Champions League: Europe’s elite football tournament. The very reason why English teams are hell-bent on finishing in the top four of the Barclay’s English Premier League (EPL) each season. Chelsea looks to have the easiest path to qualification from the group stages but can we say the same for the other clubs? Let’s take a look at each team’s group and their chances.

Manchester City [Group E] Opponents: Bayern Munich (Germany), CSKA Moscow (Russia) & AS Roma (Italy) It’s the “Group of Death” yet again for City! But, seeing how they have steadily improved in Europe over previous seasons, you would think they’ve learnt their lesson. Roma won’t be a walk in the park while the distance to travel to play CSKA Moscow will take a toll but the match against Bayern is the biggest of them all. Still, I back them to qualify, albeit by the skin of their teeth. Prediction: 2nd in group

Liverpool [Group B] Opponents: Real Madrid (Spain), Basel (Switzerland) & Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria) Back in the Champions League after a fouryear absence, it doesn’t get any bigger for Liverpool as they face defending champions Real Madrid. Basel won’t be any pushovers too, and the tricky tie against the Swiss side will be key to determining their progress into the second round. Debutants Ludogorets should be interesting to watch as well, after their dramatic entry into the competition. They had to rely on a defender to save two penalties in a shootout to reach the group stages. Prediction: 2nd in group

Photo: YiAN Kourt / Shutterstock.com

Chelsea [Group G] Opponents: Schalke 04 (Germany), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) & NK Maribor (Slovenia) The Champions League gods must be smiling on Jose Mourinho’s men as they couldn’t have asked for a better draw. Schalke seems to be the biggest test in the group but their level is nowhere near the pedigree of the Blues. I’d go as far to predict that Mourinho will use his second team for the last two games. Prediction: 1st in group

Arsenal [Group D] Opponents: Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Galatasaray (Turkey) & Anderlecht (Belgium) The Gunners should qualify from this group but the question is whether they can do so as group winners. They face familiar foes Dortmund for the third time in four seasons,

weekender.com.sg She showed her love for her fans by performing an encore, “Soulmate”

Natasha is known for her hits such as “I Wanna Have Your Babies” and “Love Like That”

I am pleased to say that she sounds exactly ( if not better ) than on her records.

Exclusive Peek “Oh, you’re from Singapore! No chewing gum, right?” were the first words Brit songbird Natasha Bedingfield said to me when I met her in an exclusive meet-and-greet session. I smiled like a fool and professed my adulation for her music before she moved on to the next guest. She quietly snuck into Malaysia a few weeks ago to perform for Starwood Preferred Guests at the Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KLS) and, boy, is she a dynamite performer! With a multitude of hits from the soundtrack of my polytechnic days, I was more than glad to be able to meet her in person. And so were the guests who used their Starpoints to redeem the meet-and-greet as well as the performance. I am pleased to say that she sounds exactly (if not better) than on her records.

Fan Girl All The Way “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to travel all over the world, and I am glad to be in Malaysia to perform at the Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral,” said Natasha Bedingfield. “Starwood really put together something magical for their members, and I am excited to share this experience with my fans in Asia,” she said. And share the experience, she did! Natasha sang hits such as “Pocketful of Sunshine”, “These Words”, and a few mash-ups of Police classics and Bruno Mars. She even did an additional song, “Soulmate”, because one of the guests requested it during the meet-and-greet.

She’s a pocket full of sunshine We were fortunate to catch a private concert with Natasha Bedingfield, best known for her song “I Wanna Have Your Babies”, in Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral

It was a very intimate experience held in the ballroom of Aloft KLS where guests sipped on champagne while dancing to her performance. And, for a fan like me, I was more than thrilled to be in such close proximity to the stage and to have exchanged a few words with her.

Dance to the Beat with Starwood To catch an intimate performance through Starwood with VIP meet-and-greets with the artist, members can redeem their Starpoints starting from a minimum of 5,000 points. As part of the Starwood Preferred Guest programme, Natasha Bedingfield’s private performance was just one of many celebrity shows in the Hear the Music – See The World line-up. Country music darling Kellie Pickler performed in the Four Points Sheraton in Nashville shortly after. Hotels under the Starwood brand include Sheraton Hotel, Le Meridien and W Hotel. Visit www.spg.com to join the programme. By Cheryl Chia This trip was made possible by Starwood Hotels. We would also like to thank Aloft KLS for hosting us.

They’re all gonna bring it for the biggest reunion and dance battle yet

M

iami street dancer Sean Asa (played by Ryan Guzman) moves to Hollywood with visions of fame and fortune, only to discover the almost insurmountable odds of making it in the professional dance world. Still, Sean has his eye on a big prize: “The Vortex”, a high stakes reality television series that pits the best dance crews against one another. The winner will receive a three-year contract in a top Las Vegas venue, no less. Together, he and Moose (played by Adam Sevani) form a new dance crew, including the beautiful and headstrong Andie West (Briana Evigan of Step Up 2 and Sorority Row). Finally, the group LMNTRIX reaches the final round of the competition...

All-Star Reunion

In Step Up: All In, fans will undoubtedly be delighted to welcome their favourite characters back (apart from the much-missed Channing Tatum). Director Trish Sie and the producers took their cue on casting from the movie’s significant social media presence, allowing familiarity to draw more fans. This sequel sees well-loved participants from previous instalments putting on their dance shoes once again for the big screen. Expect nothing short of a righteous, raucous dance battle. Sean and Andie were from previous movies, as was Moose, a more important character this time around. You’ll also spot tomboy Jenny and Eddy as the leader of tWitch, among other new additions.

movie preview

Step Up: All In Sean Asa comes together with Moose and Andie in glittering Las Vegas, as they battle for a victory that would redefine their dreams and future

competition and a few romantic sparks between Sean and Andie. By now, we can safely say one doesn’t catch a Step Up movie for a deep plot or Oscar-worthy performances. We go for the spectacular dance moves, which is undeniably the bedrock of the world of Step Up. The director assures that eager dance fans will not be disappointed. In this latest instalment, the dance moves will continue to dazzle the stage with their adrenalinecharged energy and awe-inspiring scope. Sie and three dance choreographers push the boundaries to deliver gravity-defying, acrobatic extravaganzas, including bold experiments with wind, sand and fire elements.

Flimsy Characterizations?

As they work hard to win the intense competition, Adam struggles to turn LMNTRIX into a dance competition force, Andie fights doubt as an old knee injury resurfaces, and Moose’s marriage is on the rocks. However, we’re somewhat bothered by the feeble attempt to sell the dramatic arcs. The backstage stories such as internal strife in the crew and challenges to masculinity seem to be let down by banal dialogue and anaemic direction. The storyline actually gets in the way of the inventive 3D dance scenes. Step Up: All In, just like the previous instalments, would really work better on stage. What kind of E.T. do these kids discover?

Earth to Echo is reminiscent of films such as E.T., The Goonies and Stand by Me

If the story of E.T. happened today, producer Andrew Panay asks, how would it be told? Earth to Echo just might be the answer.

movie preview

Earth to Echo:

A modern E.T. One last adventure for departing friends turns into an unforgettable encounter with an extra-terrestrial Reminiscent of older films such as E.T., The Goonies and Stand by Me, director Dave Green presents Earth to Echo, a film similar in concept but more suited to our present time. If the story of E.T. happened today, producer Andrew Panay asks, how would it be told? Earth to Echo just might be the answer.

One Epic E.T. Adventure It is one last hurrah for a trio of friends who are facing their last days together as their neighbourhood is set to be demolished. Thoughts of their impending separation are put aside when they dive into the mystery of the bizarre behaviour of their mobile phones and other peculiar occurrences. It there something more,

or mysterious, imminent? The friends soon stumble upon a dollsized capsule, which amazingly reveals itself to be some sort of an alien robot. Now, these spunky kids take it upon themselves to protect the extra-terrestrial visitor from another planet and, together, face the obstacles that come along with it.

Adorable and Awesome Alien Like many of the movies in the science fiction genre, the plot of Earth to Echo revolves around an extra-terrestrial (or E.T.). “Echo” stars as the alien hero of the film, an adorable yet potentially fearsome robot that is capable of taking apart and putting together metal objects at will. Resembling a more futuristic Wall-E, both in terms of construction and behaviour, Echo will surely be hogging the spotlight in the film, especially with his charm and wit.

Modern ‘Found Footage’ Effect The film is shot with the more-recently well-received ‘found footage’ method – depicted as video footage recovered from smartphones and video cameras of the characters. Most recent ‘found footage’ films are found in the sci-fi or horror genres. Very rarely is one treated to a film shot in ‘found footage’ that appeals to the whole family, and that’s a hint that Earth to Echo is wholesome enough to bring the whole brood. Nonetheless, the ‘found footage’ style of cinematic visuals may not be everyone’s cup of tea. We’ll leave it up to you to decide if it works in this film or genre, or not. Either way, Earth to Echo’s style of shooting gives fans of the ‘found footage’ genre a new type of film to look forward to. This cab is probably one of the best to hop onto in Singapore

If all taxis were like this one, there would be more smiles on the road By Jonathan Lim Mothership.sg reader Mike Lim shared this photograph of the interior of the taxi he took today:

Not just a pretty face Stephanie Carrington’s pretty face will be seen more with her new role as host of RTL CBS Asia Network but she’s much more than her beauty Pan-Asian beauty Stephanie Carrington has lived a nomadic life since her birth, in Germany. Coming from a military family, she subsequently spent her formative years in Korea before ending up in our fair city. Stephanie’s made waves in the modelling and entertainment industry and she’s about to make even bigger waves with her latest role as the official host of RTL CBS Asia Network.

The taxi belongs to a driver by the surname of Chee, according to Lim. Customers are free to take the bottled water and sweets provided by Chee. Lim shared that he chatted with Chee throughout the ride. According to Lim, Chee retired his mechanic gloves and became a taxi driver because as Singapore progressed into a replacement society, his job as a vehicle mechanic was made obsolete. It would seem that no one repairs anything any more. Now replacement is conflated [sic] with repairs. Asked about the kinds of comments customers gave when they boarded his taxi, Chee shared that people have said many things. Some commended him, others said he was stupid to do so (giving free water and sweets). Nevertheless, Lim commented that Chee’s good service, and him going the extra mile providing water and sweets, did turn a bad day into a good one. Well done, Uncle Chee! About Jonathan Lim Jonathan Lim edits for Mothership.sg, a Singaporean digital news agency. He is usually at home watching random videos that YouTube recommends.

Congratulations on your appointment as the official host of RTL CBS Entertainment Network! I am really excited with the appointment as a Face and Official Host of RTL CBS Asia Network, the combination of two international powerhouse networks into one official network that provides the best of entertainment to all of Asia... and to not only be part of the team but to be fronting the network as a whole. What more can a girl can ask for?

What events can we expect to see you hosting in the near future? So far, (this year) I have hosted numerous events for high-profile brands and have several other events in the pipeline. In addition to RTL CBS Asia Entertainment, you will also be able to catch me again on MediaCorp Ch 5’s National Science Challenge as I return for my sixth season.

In the course of your job, have you met anyone whom you’ve

been starstruck by? I have been very lucky and fortunate to work with and meet people from all different walks of life. From leading global fashion designers, international actors, musicians to F1 race car drivers... I think it would be unfair for me to pick out just one person who I have been starstruck by so, let’s just say, everyone I meet in my job inspires me! :)

You also count dancing and acting as part of your repertoire, would you ever love to star in a movie such as Step Up? Hahaha! I was one of several local celebrities that “strutted their stuff” for Dance Star Asia. That would have to be one of the most gruelling ten weeks of my life but I am so proud that I had the opportunity to work with and learn from, worldclass dancers that had flown in all the way from England. But if someone wanted to put me in the next Step Up movie, why not?? I would love to! Or maybe even a theatre production... Now that would be a challenge but definitely one that I’d love to explore!

Any interesting or memorable event on the job? I have to say, every event or job I do is very different and that is why I love my job! I will never forget the time that I swam with sharks (and how freaky it was!), walked down the runway wearing a tailor-made dress made solely out of credit cards, hosted the launch of the most expensive

car in the world and, just recently, in front of over 300 people, I ate not one but two cockroaches when I hosted the official launch of the RTL CBS Extreme HD Channel!

Being of mixed heritage, are you more comfortable in a western environment or in an Asian environment? Having practically travelled since the day I was born, with my family, and even throughout my career before making Singapore my home, I feel very grateful to have experienced so many different cultures and environments. It’s always a hard one for me because Asian values and culture is a very big part of me but, at the same time, Western cultures are equally as important. So, you could say I am comfortable in both environments and enjoy the best of both. But… as the larger part of my life has been in Asia, if I had to choose, perhaps I would choose Asia?? Ooh… it’s a tough one.

What would you like to say to your fans? First and foremost, I am very thankful and grateful that Singapore has welcomed me with open arms and I am happy to call Singapore home. I am so appreciative of all the support and love and I look forward to showing different sides of me and sharing more of my experiences with all of my fans. Sending hugs to each and every one of you! :) By Cheryl Chia

Something to hoot about Part of me wants to frame it and part of me wants to eat it

Known for hearty food and hot girls, Hooters has new main courses and promotions

Sylvia with one of her newest commissioned creations

We catch up with former Class 95FM DJ Sylvia Lee on her new passion – baking and cake sculpting. They taste as good as they look! Have you ever eaten something you wished you could keep forever? If I eat it, I won’t get to #selfie with it anymore and if I don’t eat it, I will feel bad for my tummy for never having the chance to eat something so adorable. We interviewed Sylvia Lee, former Class 95FM DJ and the humble creator of all these lovely cakes, who discovered her love for baking in recent years.

When did you start baking? I have been baking since 2011, around Christmas. It started because of the huge cupcake craze then! I bought my niece an easy-bake box set including the recipe book and asked if I could borrow it first. I never returned the book!

Oh. your poor niece! But I’m sure a lot of good came out of her never-returned book. Indeed! I started baking after work and I would get my colleagues to be the ‘guinea pigs’. I eventually realized I couldn’t pipe (frosting for cakes) to save my life, so I decided to go sugar paste style.

So, what was the grand result? It was my son’s birthday and he likes bowling so I decided to try my hand at a bowling-themed cake. It was very well-

received and I started getting enquiries! Because I had taken time off to focus on my child entering Primary 1, I had time to bake and hence it started.

Most Singaporeans know Hooters Singapore, the first outlet in Asia of the American franchise. Famed for its friendly service, huge portions of food and the renowned Hooters girls, it is a popular venue for parties and celebrations. To keep things fresh, Hooters Singapore has dished out new innovative main courses Honey Mustard Chicken, Beef Wrap, Tuna Arrabbiata and Chicken & Sausage Combo to excite your taste buds. The Bird’s Nest in Coconut Milk had a rich and soothing flavour

What were your most requested designs? There was a period when it was minion cakes. My requested designs range from Liverpool cakes (even though I’m a Man U fan), Hello Kitty cakes, Captain America cakes, Princess Sophia cupcakes, Iron Man cupcakes, to even a three-tier dinosaur cake. I like challenging myself so I am always willing to fulfil different requests. It was a process of taking the order and thinking about the ways to sculpt it. It made me incredibly happy. That was when I realised I really enjoyed the craft.

That’s very impressive. Was this what prompted your career switch? It feels like my DJ days was a past lifetime ago. I know of so many other women who changed careers in their 30s, 40s and 50s. I found my voice in baking. It makes me the happiest.

We’re glad to hear that. What is one thing you would say about cakes? I feel that a cake is the centrepiece of a celebration. We couldn’t have put it any better. Thank you, Sylvia, for your time. Drop Sylvia an E-mail at sylviadom@ gmail.com for enquiries on her cakes.

Of course, there are also ongoing promotions. In Monday Madness (all day), for only $0.99, get ten pieces of Nearly World Famous Chicken Wings with a purchase of every Tiger pitcher. Also, get your third beer free with the purchase of every two beers or two house pours of the same kind daily from 10pm till late. The Daily Set Lunch Specials are only $10++. Be spoilt by ten fabulous choices that include four new main courses of Pork Loin Napolitaine, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Honey Mustard Chicken and Fish & Chips. The set comprises the main, a soft drink and ice cream. Add $2.50++ for the Soup of the Day and Coffee or Tea. Daily, 11am to 3pm. The $15 nett Seafood Set Lunch comprises Grilled Fish with two pieces of Succulent Tiger Prawns topped with Cream Sauce, served with Garden Salad and Buttered Mashed Potato with demi-glace. The set comprises the main, a soft drink and ice cream. Add $2.50++ for the Soup of the Day and Coffee or Tea. Add $5++ for a mug of Tiger Beer. Daily, 11am to 3pm. Westsiders take note, a gourmet coffee studio has opened up for your daily java If you’re very particular about how you like your coffee down to the origin of the beans and the roasting, you’d be happy to know that you can get all that and more at The Tiny Roaster. Nestled in the far end of an estate next to West Coast Plaza, The Tiny Roaster is not just your run-of-themill hipster café. It is more of a coffee studio that sells freshly-brewed coffee. You won’t find fancy drinks or frappuccino’s here, though; this is a place for serious coffee drinkers.

Get your coffee fix at the Tiny Roaster

Ethical Coffee The Tiny Roaster was founded in 2013, supplying equipment and home-roasting supplies to home coffee roasters in Singapore. It also brings in speciality coffee beans from ethically and socially responsible coffee processing mills for re-packaging for the daily consumer. The Tiny Roaster serves only freshly brewed coffee, no food. Yes, you read right: no food. Tiffany Chan of The Tiny Roaster says, “We will not be serving food at our coffee studio, as it is purely a coffee space where coffee junkies can hang out and chill. However, we will be holding some occasional coffee-food pairing sessions when we have new coffee arrivals.”

The menu features two to three single origin Black Brews ($4-$4.50) rotated on a bi-weekly or monthly basis, White Brews ($4.50 -$5) – Tiny Roaster’s version of the latte – and Vienna Coffee ($5) – a dessert-styled coffee with brown sugar and topped with whipped cream. Artisanal Roasted Beans The Tiny Roaster takes coffeedrinking very seriously. It brews the coffee with Kalita drippers, which it also sells. The beans are also roasted by the studio itself, which range from Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee to Chiang Mai organic coffee. The Tiny Roaster also carries the Quest M3 home electric coffee roaster and the Kalita Wave 155 stainless steel dripper ($42.50) and brown filters ($6.50), should you wish to embark on a D-I-Y coffeebrewing project at home. Make sure to follow The Tiny Roaster’s Facebook page for updates on its Roasting Sessions and Brewing Sessions to learn more about how to do coffee better. men In Singapore Sanpoutei Ramen

Weekender chomps around Singapore to find some of the best ramen in town I was incredibly insulted when one of my friends proclaimed ramen to be “just like Maggi noodles”. I was insulted because I consider Japanese ramen to be almost a sacred art form, with 12-hour broths made complete with meat, bamboo shoots, and the marinated egg. I’m very picky about my ramen, and I always go back to the same store, such as Ramen Keisuke’s Tonkotsu King chain. I would hate for anyone else to assume ramen is merely instant noodles. So, here is a list of some of the best ramen in Singapore.

Tonkotsu King Matsuri

Ippudo SG

Le Vacherin de la Reine looks too pretty to be eaten

The newest addition to the Ramen Keisuke chain, Tonkotsu King Matsuri, is all the way at Parkway Parade. The menu features flavours such as the Tonkotsu Ramen Nebuta ($13.90-$18.90), a pork bone broth with Japanese dried fish stock. If you like your ramen soup thick, try the Tonkotsu Ramen Awaodori ($13.90-$18.90). It comes topped with pork sukiyaki and a raw egg yolk to add even more thickness to the pork bone broth! Tonkotsu King Matsuri, Parkway Parade, 80 Marine Parade Road, #B1-18A, Singapore 449269, Tel: 6440 5548

The Omelette Norvegienne or Baked Alaska is exciting in taste and aesthetics

Chabuton The chef behind Chabuton ramen is the first ramen chef to ever receive a Michelin star. An outlet recently opened at 313@ Somerset, and I recommend the Chabuton Kara Kara Ramen ($8.30-$11.90), which is more suited to the local palate. The pork bone broth is topped with spicy minced pork and char siew for a kick. Chabuton, 313@Somerset, 313 Orchard Road, #B2-01, Singapore 238895, Tel: 6636 8335

Hakata Ikkousha Crowned Singapore’s Ultimate Ramen Champion in 2011, Ikkousha means “happy place”, and you’ll certainly be happy with the ramen at Hakata Ikkousha. I especially liked the Tonkotsu Black ($13.50), infused with fried garlic paste to give it a fragrance. I do not suggest it if you are on a date! Its second outlet recently opened in CHIJmes. Hakata Ikkousha, CHIJmes, 30 Victoria Street, #01-07, Singapore 187996

Ippudo SG This acclaimed ramen emporium opened its doors in 2009, and the queue at its flagship outlet in Mandarin Gallery has not waned since. It has a plant in Singapore processing its own noodles and soup for freshness. I like the Shiromaru Motoaji ($15 without add-ons) because the broth was fullflavoured and not too oily. However, I disliked

the heated bowls, as the noodles and even the egg cook even more after being served. Scoop the egg out if you like to eat that last. If not, you’ll end up with a hardboiled egg. Ippudo Singapore, Mandarin Gallery, 333A Orchard Road, #04-02/03/04, Singapore 238897

Ramen Matsuri Chef Kenichi Ikehata, previously of Marutama Ramen, is now the proud owner of Ramen Matsuri at Boat Quay. He introduces to us his Sakura Chicken Ramen ($11.90-$16.90). The broth is simmered with the free-range Sakura chicken, with bones and feet, as well as a variety of vegetables, for over four hours to achieve a clear broth. The resulting ramen is lighter and less cloying. Ladies even get a free piece of collagen jelly to stir into the ramen! Ramen Matsuri, 7 North Canal Road, Singapore 048820 (Behind Boat Quay), Tel: 6533 0845

Sanpoutei Ramen Popular ramen chain Sanpoutei from Niigata opened its first outlet in Holland Village earlier this year. The Niigata ramen has a shoyu base with a clear fish stock broth. Shoyu Ramen ($14) has a soup base that is simmered for six hours. It consists of chicken, pork, mushrooms and, most importantly, two kinds of premium niboshi, or dried sardines. Each bowl is topped with aburi (or torched) cha shu and bamboo shoots. Sanpoutei Ramen, 253 Holland Ave, #01-01, Singapore 278982, Tel: 6463 7277 By Cheryl Chia

Le Grand Jardin d’Antoinette is a rich and tasty combination

It comes topped with caramel orange dressing and a poached egg. The duck was tender and juicy without being gamey and the caramel orange dressing added a taste reminiscent of duck l’orange. The Entrecôte Poêlée a la Bordelaise ($36) is a minute steak with a side of potato puree and seasonal vegetables. The shallot red wine jus amazed me more than the rib-eye did with its heady flavours.

Savoury additions to Antoinette French-inspired salon de thé Antoinette updates its menu with plated desserts and more savouries

For more restaurant reviews and foodie stories, like & follow us at www.facebook.com/ weekendersgp

I’ve always thought of Antoinette as merely a place to have a cup of tea with girlfriends while you nibble on macarons but the newly-updated menu elevates its status to a proper restaurant, with plated desserts and new savoury dishes. I’ve been to other Antoinette outlets, but I must say the central kitchen and

flagship outlet at Penhas Road has a better ambience if you want a quiet dinner with friends, or if you’re on a date.

Let Them Eat… Steak? The savouries menu surprised me at Antoinette, especially the Le Grand Jardin d’Antoinette ($30). The pretty plated salad features many components such as French-imported duck breast, pickled pears, roast asparagus, baby carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, button mushrooms, sunflower seeds, mixed greens and more.

The plated desserts section of Antoinette didn’t disappoint. Order the Omelette Norvegienne ($25); essentially, it is a Baked Alaska. Vanilla ice cream, griotte cherries in kirsch, orange confit and almond nougatine is enveloped in a blackcurrant meringue. Ready your cameras here as the meringue is flamed with Grand Marnier liquor. If you like rose flavoured desserts, try Le Vacherin de la Reine ($25) – rose petal meringue filled with yuzu cream, vanilla bean ice cream, vanilla crème Chantilly, lychee, strawberries and raspberries, all crowned with spun sugar. It is almost like eating an enormous version of a rose macaron. Yummy! Antoinette has also introduced an array of Chinese teas to help combat all that sweetness. Get ideas for transforming your home

One of the luxuries in this house is the large open kitchen that sits beside the dining area. Here, appliances have been incorporated in the kitchen wall units, while a compact and versatile island counter stands in the centre of the space – it can be used as a breakfast counter or as additional preparation space.

Raise the Bar The dining area is well supported by a bar area. Dressed in formal black laminated finishes, the bar area is a handsome setting for pre-dinner aperitifs, soothing nightcaps or even a mischievous cocktail during the day.

Two columns of shelves were built to store the handbags that the lady of the house collects.

We resume our popular Home Inspirations segment with more creative ideas for the home from Lookbox Living Enlisting the help of design firm The Orange Cube, the owners of this inter-terrace house were looking for a home that’s formal in aesthetic but casual in spatial arrangement.

Customised joinery in the master bedroom focuses on keeping things organised. Two columns of shelves were built to store the handbags that the lady of the house collects. Beside this, a dresser extends into a console below the TV. To keep the look coherent, the designers customised the bed frame, complete with a low, understated headboard.

Bubbling Good Times The en suite in the master bedroom is lavish to say the least. A larger-than-usual shower stall cloaked in charcoal-coloured tiles follows a modest vanity area. The piece de resistance of the bathroom, however, is the Jacuzzi tub that occupies the far end of the space. It’s not hard to imagine how this is one of the owner’s favourite spaces in the home.

Living Quarters One enters directly into the living area, which is clearly-defined as a room on its own, being a few steps lower than the adjacent dining area. A controlled colour scheme of black and white is only interrupted by a peek of light beige bleeding in from the dining area.

By Redzman Rahmat

Tiered Schemes The split-level arrangement of the living and dining areas offered the opportunity to give each space due attention without design features competing with one another. The living room has a bookcase with stepped shelving while the dining area is privy to its very own feature wall.

Above: The bar is great for an aperitif or cocktail. Below: The split level gives each space due attention without features competing with one another.

Recipe For Style How do you deal with practicalities in the single most complex space in the home and still make it look good? We compile a look book of kitchens to give you ideas.

Industrial Strength

Down the Line

Tile Style

Wood Work

A durable kitchen is a good kitchen, and nothing says hardwearing more than cement screed. Easy to maintain and relatively cheaper than other surfaces like solid surface, quartz, marble, etc, cement screed is an affordable way to give your kitchen an edgy personality. Pair it with stainless steel or even tiles to temper the raw industrialism.

When dealing with a small kitchen (like those of 3-room HDB flats), designing an integrated kitchen cum dining table is a great way to maximise space. Contrary to popular belief, moving your preparation area away from the walls can create a sense of space with the extra room for circulation.

Tiles are making a big comeback in the kitchen. Depending on the dimensions of the tile, you can create the look of chic French kitchens, or use mosaic tiles to introduce colour to the back splash. Affordable and resistant to wear and tear, this traditional surfacing material is experiencing a revival in kitchen design.

While there are those who like their kitchens cool and sleek, there are many who prefer their kitchens to feel warm and organic. For the latter, nothing beats timber textures in the cooking space. Go with bold, unmistakable grains to create an impression, or pick a timber texture that is more subdued for something more comforting.

Sometimes, all the ingredients you need for beauty is sitting in your kitchen. Here are a few easy home remedies to keep you as fresh, all day. But as with all beauty remedies, be sure to do a patch test first to ensure that you’re not allergic to any ingredient.

Sugar Brown sugar would be best for this one. Simply mix coarse brown sugar with honey and an emollient such as olive or coconut oil, for a body scrub. If you prefer a finer scrub, use caster sugar instead. Store the mixture in an airtight jar and use in the shower on dry areas.

Used Tea Bags Ever woken up to puffy eyes on the day of an important meeting? Don’t fret! Head to the kitchen, steep tea bags into two cups of tea, and remove the tea bags. When they cool, place them on your eyelids between pieces of tissue. The caffeine in the tea bags will help to constrict blood vessels and soothe puffy eyes. Chamomile tea bags are the best for de-puffing.

Looking for a kinky experience or a different honeymoon? Jeju Loveland in Korea is for you. This unique theme park certainly stimulates your sexual imagination (at least). Jeju Loveland features over 140 erotic sculptures of people and animals in various sexual trysts. In the Korean “Honeymoon Island” of Jeju, couples can learn the conjugal basics through explicit giant statues and even phallus-shaped door handles. Educational sex films are also screened throughout the park. The park breaks traditional taboos surrounding sex and is the best place for couples to appreciate the natural beauty of sexuality. This is certainly not a place for young kids.

Dwarf Empire: Dozens of little people emerge from a forest of cartoonish houses

Dwarf Empire, China This is another unique theme park. At Kingdom of the Little People, or Dwarf Empire, be greeted by dozens of little people dancing in unison! The 2 ft to 4 ft residents perform various shows such as acrobatics and break dancing, and also engage in sport contests. Dwarf Empire is a village full of colourful mushroom-shaped houses, a la The Smurfs. It runs like a country of its own, with an Emperor and Empress. This rather controversial theme park has been criticised for treating dwarfism as a humorous condition. However, a person with dwarfism is usually subject to widespread discrimination in the Chinese society. The owner of the park points out that the employees enjoy a stable wage and a safe working and living environment.

Išgyvenimo Drama & Grutas Park, Lithuania

Quirkiest theme parks around the world

Išgyvenimo Drama (or Survival Drama) is housed in an ex-Soviet bunker. Here, be transported to Communist-era Lithuania. I know, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Here, you’ll be ordered to wear gas masks, eat typical Soviet food, learn the Soviet anthem and undergo a Gulagstyle interrogation by authentic former Soviet army soldiers! Those who survive the ordeal are given a celebratory shot of vodka. Similarly, at Grutas Park, also known as Stalin’s world, step into the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. The park is enclosed by barbed wire fences and guard towers for the authentic Gulag prison camp feel. Gawk at the aptly-named Terror Sphere, featuring statues of the former Communist Party leaders.

Following our feature last week on 5 Most Unusual Parks, we present the quirkiest theme parks around the world. Who cares about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Most of us have been to theme parks but perhaps there’s only so much cotton candy, Disney (or other commercial) characters and roller coaster rides that one can stomach. We need more, or more quirky sights and experiences to satisfy our curiosity or thirst for adventure. We’ve cast our net wide to round up a list of the quirkiest theme parks around the world. Just a word of warning: You might need therapy after.

Dickens World in England, a 75,000 sq ft theme park, brings the characters and lifestyle of the famous works of Charles Dickens to life. Enter the world of Victorianage London in the 19th Century, complete with signs of poverty, filth and smells. Visitors will see famous landmarks and favourite characters from Dickens’ novels, encounter disease-ridden beggars [that’s right], tour the Marshalsea Prison and more. Don’t miss the most popular Great Expectations river boat ride, attended by staff decked out in full Victorian garb, and with accompanying accents.

Haw Par Villa: Terrifying visions of the afterlife

Wunderland Kalkar, Germany Once an abandoned nuclear power plant, the cooling tower in Wunderland Kalkar, Germany has been converted into an amusement park. It boasts more than 40 rides, including the whirligig “Flying Carousel”, the vertical travel “Jumping Star” and the “Merry Go Round” carousel. The premises also house a 437-room hotel, numerous restaurants, and a bowling alley. The star attraction is the cooling tower, painted to resemble a snowy mountain landscape. Rock climbing trails snake up its outer wall. You’ll also find a swing ride and an area named “Echoland” inside.

Haw Par Villa, Singapore A walk through Haw Par Villa in Singapore is filled with a mixture of curiosity, fear and perhaps a little humour. This strange theme park contains numerous giant dioramas depicting gruesome scenes of the afterlife, according to Chinese mythology. Journey through the Ten Stages of Hell and see statues of people being maimed, crushed by boulders, drowning in a pond of blood, etc. Apparently, all these fates are punishments for the misdeeds committed in one’s lifetime. You might need to talk to someone after this experience. By Lim Wan Ling

Vietnam Style: A mosaic CHINESE INFLUENCES

In the last several centuries, external forces shaped Vietnam’s culture into what it is today. We take a look at what’s indigenous and what’s foreign-influenced

V

ietnam is a beautiful country with one of the oldest histories in the world. In the last millennium, it has been at the confluence of external forces ranging from the Chinese to the French to the American to the Russian. Vietnam has assimilated and incorporated all these influences. We take a visual stroll from the indigenous to the foreign elements of Vietnam’s style.

Saigon & Jade Pagoda Temple The largest minority community in Ho Chi Minh City is the Chinese, with a population of about 500,000. They have been here since the late 1700s and are concentrated mainly in Saigon. Now the Chinese form about 5 per cent of the city’s population, which is overwhelmingly dominated by the Kinh, or ethnic Vietnamese. One of the Chinese’s most famous temples is the Jade Pagoda Temple, dedicated to the Jade Emperor of Heaven. This bustling temple is filled with wooden carvings of fierce gods, monstrous heroes, and many other traditional icons. But what is most fearsome is a room called the “Hall of 10 Hells”, where wooden panels depicting the “Ten Regions of Hell” foreshadow the fate of wayward people. The Jade Pagoda Temple is worth a visit because it has some of the most beautiful lamps I have ever seen. The smoky atmosphere, intense saturated reds and streaming shafts of light make for dramatic photos worthy of Facebook or Instagram. Hall of 10 Hells: The lighting and colour exudes drama and mystique in this 300-year-old temple.

Local Authenticity The Ao Dai, or long dress, is one of the most beautiful and iconic national dresses in the world. The modern rendition of the Ao Dai was developed in Saigon during the 1950s and was very popular in the 1970s. Looking at vintage photos of Saigon from that period, one can see many ladies scooting around town with their Ao Dai’s billowing behind them. How stylish! Truly original: Puppet masters and their water puppets exist only in Vietnam

FRENCH INFLUENCES Da Lat

Water Puppets

Captivating elegance: Who can resist the charms of a Vietnamese beauty wearing an Ao Dai?

Less well-known, but equally iconic as the Ao Dai, is Vietnamese water puppetry. Originating from the northern farming towns of Vietnam in the 11th Century, these puppets provide entertainment for the farming community. Crafted out of wood and lacquered, these puppets perform above the brackish water with rods below the water to articulate their moving arms and bodies. From behind the curtains, the puppeteers control them to dance along to the accompanied song and music. Elaborate puppets include dragons that swim below water, and surface to spew fire, as well as tree-climbing monkeys. Water puppetry is very popular with tourists in Vietnam and, in Ho Chi Minh City, you can catch one at the Rong Vang Puppet Theatre (Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre). To avoid seeing the back of a person’s head for much of the performance, go there early for front row seats.

A 30-minute flight via VietJetAir from Ho Chi Minh City brings you to Da Lat, which translates to “Stream of the Lat”. It is better known as “Little Paris”. With an elevation of 1,500m, Da Lat’s average temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius. The French colonials founded this city in the 1890s as a refuge for their community, from Saigon’s oppressive heat. French colonial architecture is almost everywhere here. There’s even an iron structure that looks similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, while quaint colonial buildings line the streets below. The railway station, now a national monument with its three tall gables, was designed and built to resemble the Normandy’s Trouville-Deauville Station. After the departure of the French, Da Lat became a very popular domestic tourist attraction. It is the preferred place for local honeymooners presumably because it resembles Paris, the “City of Love”, and it doesn’t cost as much to get to. Little Paris: For the colonialist French, Da Lat was created in the likeness of Paris – complete with an ‘Eiffel Tower’ in the skyline.

Located in downtown Ho Chi Minh City are two destinations worth visiting. First, and more impressive, is the Saigon Central Post Office, designed by the famous architect Gustave Eiffel. Yes, the same chap who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New York City. The space is gorgeous and impressive, typical of the neoclassical style popular in Europe in that century, though the portrait of Uncle Ho at the end doesn’t seem to gel with the overall design. Across the street is the second attraction called Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica or the Catholic Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception. Completed in the 1880s as a place of worship for the French colonialists, all of its building materials, including the bright red-coloured bricks on its exterior, were imported from France.

As stewardesses’ uniforms go, there are only a few around the world which are truly unique. While VietJetAir, may not be the most well-known carrier internationally, it certainly wins on uniqueness. According to the General Manager of VietJetAir, their uniforms were inspired by the French colonial soldiers’ uniforms in Indo-China. A bit of research online confirmed the similarity in cut. The side cap, however, is not French. From the layered folds, it appears to be a Russian “pilotka” side cap worn by Russian pilots. This is certainly a pop cultural homage to their Russian comrades.
