RED CARD FOOTBALL FEVER
Juicy news & tips on the EPL & the best of world football
Premier League returns with blockbuster clash With the international fixtures out of the way, the Barclays English Premier League returns with a mouth-watering clash between Arsenal and Manchester City How frustrating was it last weekend, having witnessed the drama of Transfer Deadline Day but not being able to see the new signings strutting their stuff with their new clubs? Fret not, the Barclays English Premier League (EPL) gods have heard your calls of despair and have lined up some tasty fixtures this weekend to make up for the international friendly break!
The Big Match: Arsenal vs Manchester City 13 Sep, 7.45pm Manchester City stuttered against a defiant Stoke City as it lost at the Etihad in the previous match. You may not understand the severity of that statement. City almost never loses at home; much less let a goal be scored against them! City’s got some making up to do but Arsenal will be no pushover, with former Manchester United golden boy Danny
Welbeck set to make his debut for the Gunners. Arsenal drew first blood in the FA Community Shield in a 3-0 victory over City last month but the reigning champions will prove a different proposition this time around. Prediction: Arsenal 1-1 Manchester City
Villa will come crashing back to earth this weekend though, and it might have Mario Balotelli to blame for it. Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Aston Villa
Manchester United vs Queens Park Rangers 14 Sep, 11pm Hey, big spenders! All eyes will be on how Louis van Gaal will set up his team, with recent acquisitions of Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and Marcus Rojo all queuing up for their home debuts. Is QPR set to face the wrath of the Red Devils, or will the over-expectation lead to yet another surprising (or not-sosurprising) result? Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Queens Park Rangers Vlad1988 / Shutterstock.com
Other tasty fixtures: Chelsea vs Swansea 13 Sep, 10pm It’s an unlikely top of the table clash with both teams having earned maximum points after three games. All that will change this weekend and it’s hard to see Chelsea not emerging as the victor. The high-flying Swans will prove a tough test but the Blues should have more than enough ammunition to see this one out. Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Swansea

Liverpool vs Aston Villa 14 Sep, 12.30am Liverpool recovered from its defeat against Manchester City to comfortably see off the in-form Spurs in its last Premier League match. Speaking of form, Aston Villa hasn’t been doing too badly with two wins and a draw in the opening three games.
Was France international Loic Remy a good buy for Chelsea?
Will England international Danny Welbeck start for the Gunners?

weekender.com.sg She’s more than a babe - Claire finished Top 9 in the category out of 36 competitors in the Malaysian Super Series
Claire Jedrek gets our hearts racing A suitcase babe from “Deal or No Deal”, you may not know that Claire Jedrek is also a fitness enthusiast and competitive racer
T
he beautiful British-born Claire Jedrek came to Singapore in 1994, having attended Cedar Girls Secondary School then. She started to grab attention and publicity grew when she appeared as a suitcase girl in the Singaporean franchise of the TV show “Deal or No Deal”. More than just a model, Claire has made a name for herself in the extreme sport as well as race scene. An avid race-karter, she has also raced in the Malaysian Super Series this year. She is even being mentored to be team manager in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. Claire’s latest undertaking is the Great Eastern Women’s Run on Nov 9, and she
shares with us her enthusiasm for fitness as well as some tips.
What piqued your interest in sport? As far as anyone has ever recounted to me, it seems I was born on full charge to hit the ground running. Sport has always been something I have always fallen back on no matter where I have been and where I will be heading to in future. I feel an exhilaration nothing else can give me. It has always had such a positive effect on my life and it continues to lead the way!
What is your typical exercise routine? I have always loved running as part of an overall weekly routine; so, two to three times a week, anywhere from 2.4km to 10km. I then have High Intensity Interval Trainings (HIIT) workouts which are great for slotting in any time of the day, so I generally go for one-hour workouts to two hours max. That is my year-end big bang!
Do you have any advice for a person who wants to start exercising? Thinking about making this addition to your life can be overwhelming but it’s a start. Remember, goals are something within reach, so start really small like a 10-min brisk walk or slow jog and, when you are ready to crank it up a notch, add on the minutes. Wanting to complete a marathon is an aspiration, not a goal. Not all of us can be self-motivated, so having a partner can help… Simply put, just get your shoes on and get out of the door! That, to me, is the biggest hurdle. Claire’s smouldering looks and ultra-fit bod has won her many fans
What has been your personal best in sports? Right now, it has to be racing cars, where I finished Top 9 in the category out of 36 competitors in the Malaysian Super Series (MSS). Personal bests are about how hard I know I have pushed myself to be there even if it means being the only female. Racing cars is brilliant because it sees no gender or age.
Do you have a strict diet? I am pretty good with what I eat but I love doughnuts and over-buttered bread. I tend to cook more so I know what I am putting in me, and if I control my shopping I can over-indulge in good food. Wraps are my flavour of the month right now!
Do you ever get lazy? Of course! The simple pleasures in life sometimes are staying in to play with my nephew or playing my latest obsession, SimCity 4, and at other times I have work deadlines but I try not to feel guilty because life’s way too short to be upset at myself. Life of Crime: What if a kidnap goes your way? He wanted to get rid of his wife, but they beat him to it
T
wo ex-convicts, who hit it off in prison, scheme to kidnap the wife of a corrupt real estate developer in Detroit to blackmail him. The target is Frank Dawson, played by Tim Robbins (of Mystic River and Shawshank Redemption). The plan is simple – kidnap his wife and demand a ransom. Should he decide to go to the police, blackmail the man with his illegal activities. What could possibly go wrong? Unknown to Frank’s wife and the kidnappers, Frank has just filed for divorce. What if he won’t pay the ransom?
“He’s ruined me for other writers who, for my money, may never match his wit, his originality and his humanity,” said Schechter. Leonard’s work has birthed many other great film adaptations, including 2008’s Killshot, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 2004’s The Big Bounce, starring Owen Wilson and Morgan Freeman, and 1995’s Get Shorty, starring John Travolta and Rene Russo.
From the Big Daddy of Crime Writers
“He’s so Dumb it’s Adorable”
Life of Crime is based on the novel The Switch by the late Elmore Leonard (who has written other novels made into films, such as 3:10 to Yuma and Jackie Brown). Director Daniel Schechter hails the writer’s talent and unparalleled creativity.
Life of Crime exemplifies some of the best sad-sack and dark comedy in recent times, capturing awkward pauses and absurd jokes almost perfectly. Not to be mistaken for the average crime-comedy production we endure every now and then, Life of
Crime is for the most part well put together and with an amazing cast. Apart from Robbins who plays Dawson, Jennifer Anniston stars as Dawson’s wife. She certainly still is eye candy, and many will remember her sexy turn in Horrible Bosses.
The Team of Outlaws Also starring in the film are Mos Def (also known as Yasiin Bey) and John Hawkes, who look to be an impressive team on screen. The duo is the team of Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara, the underqualified criminals attempting the kidnapping. Mos Def is most famous for his roles in 16 Blocks and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and as Brother Sam in “Dexter”. Hawkes, meanwhile, portrayed Robert
Latham in Lincoln, and Lennon in “Lost”. It is also a delight to see Isla Fisher, who starred in Now You See Me and Confessions of a Shopaholic. Fisher plays Melanie, Dawson’s attractive and not-sodumb mistress. Life of Crime has the potential to be the most entertaining adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s work ever. It surely is a mustwatch for crime-comedy fans, at the very least. Nevertheless, under their life of frills, a whole other community exists. The little Boxtrolls spend their nights ravaging human beings’ trash for what they deem to be treasure. Their days are equally preoccupied, spent transforming their acquired mechanical junk into brilliant innovations. But one of these creatures is not like the others.
A Boy Turned Boxtroll Bestowed the name “Eggs” by his guardians, this human boy has been raised from infancy by the Boxtrolls. Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright, Bran Stark in “Game of Thrones”) is the Boxtrolls’ only hope of saving his adopted family from the hateful “Red Hats”, who endeavour to exterminate the Boxtrolls from their town. This is the premise for the young boy’s adventure. Eggs goes above ground in the hope of saving his Boxtroll family from terror. He teams up with 11-yearold, Winnie (voiced by Elle Fanning of Maleficent and Super 8) to devise
a daring plan to save the Boxtrolls from long-time villain Archibald Snatcher.
The Famous Ben Kingsley The chief villain in the film, Archibald Snatcher, is voiced by none other than award-winning thespian Sir Ben Kingsley. Most famous for his role in the groundbreaking Gandhi, his career has spanned over 40 years and his work has been celebrated with an Oscar, multiple Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild awards. Kingsley’s unmistakable voice and take on the character will surely be an interesting highlight, and delight, for some in the audience. The Boxtrolls is another stunning piece of work from Laika Entertainment (that brought to life novelist Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, as well as Paranorman), one of the most successful animated film studios of recent times. While it remains to be seen how fantastic this animated movie is overall, one can almost be certain that it promises a rollicking fun time for the whole family. The Boxtrolls [PG] Director: Anthony Stacchi, Graham Annable Starring: Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning & Isaac Hempstead-Wright Genre: Animation, Family, Comedy Run Length: 110 min Release: 11 Sep

hen the restaurant Au Jardin in the Botanic Gardens closed after more than a decade, it left most foodies wondering what would fill the space it left behind. Now, Corner House has stepped up and taken over the historical black and white bungalow. This majestic colonial house used to be home to E J H Corner, the Assistant Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens from 1929 to 1945. Some of his botanic sketches and replicas can be seen adorning the walls in the restaurant.
Fine Meals in a Majestic Setting Helming the kitchen of Corner House is Chef Jason Tan, who brings delicate fine dining sensibilities. The restaurant only offers set menus with options ranging from $38 for a three-course lunch to $248 for a degustation menu. The degustation (or as they call it, the Discovery Menu Experience) features an eight-course meal, excluding the amuse-bouche and petit fours. My favourite course was the Interpretation of My Favourite

Vegetables, oignon doux des Cevennes. It was the sweet onion from France cooked in four ways – an onion and parmesan-topped biscuit, dehydrated onion chip, onion egg with truffles, and an onion broth ‘latte’. The egg is cooked within the whole sweet onion, topped with truffles and a touch of pepper. It was a very comforting dish that shows how a simple dish of “onion egg” can be elevated to fine dining.
Small Food, Big Plates, Yet Filling Other dishes from the dinner menu include the Free Range Chicken with mushrooms, romaine lettuce, and the chef’s own Surf and Turf sauce. The dish comes with a compressed chicken thigh and a tender chicken breast. Dessert is a feast for the eyes. The Cocoa ‘Pebbles’ features chocolate mousse ‘pebbles’ with sugar ‘mushrooms’ and chocolate soil. But don’t get too stuffed! The petit fours is next, and you must not miss the signature ‘liu sha bao’ macarons. Bedok Point gets a terrific new addition of truly authentic Thai-Chinese food in Khun Mee Thai Who would have thought authentic ThaiChinese food could be found in the heartland, in Bedok Point? One would think ‘Little Thailand’ at Golden Mile Complex would be the place to visit for good or authentic Thai food but I think I’m going to start going to Khun Mee Thai instead. Specialising in Thai-Chinese street food, Khun Mee Thai serves staples such as Thai wanton noodles, green curry, fried chicken skin and cartilage.
Springy Noodles The egg noodles, or “ba mee”, from Khun Mee Thai are specifically made in a factory here to ensure premium-quality egg noodles with little alkali taste. My favourite was the Ba Mee Kiao ($5.80-$8.80), comprising egg noodles with wantons, char siew and egg. The dry version of the noodles is tossed in garlic oil and lard, with a generous spoonful of crispy lard bits on the top – super sinful but super good! The accompanying soup is flavourful, with pork bones and pepper, much like bak kut teh. If you’re a fan of Thai green curry, try the Ba Mee Kang Keaw Wan Gai ($9.80) instead, which has egg noodles in green chicken curry.
Hitting the Streets Dishes such as Kha Moo ($8.80), with braised pork leg, are also available. The homemade chilli vinaigrette that comes with the dish gives it a moreish quality that left me hankering for more. Sharing plates such as Nang Kai Tod ($4.80), fried chicken skin, and Moo Daet Daew ($6.80), fried sun-dried pork, are also available. The fried chicken skin has most of its fat removed from the skin before deep-frying. This makes it a little more guilt-free, or so we hope. If you live in the East, you have a new gem in your midst. Go before it gets too crowded!

Refined dim sum
Wine and dine in peace with Manhattan’s new Weekend Cocktail Brunch – adults only.
Lawry’s, known for ribs and steak, has recently launched a new high tea menu for a satisfying afternoon
I’m usually not keen on Sunday brunch buffets as they usually include loud families with unruly children scooting around the restaurant with no restraint from their parents. So when Manhattan bar at Regent Hotel started its adults-only Weekend Cocktail Brunch, I was sold! Manhattan pays tribute to the New York tradition of festive weekend brunches, available every Sunday from 11.30am to 3.30pm at $150. It includes a free flow of cocktails, wine and beer. You can also have champagne for an additional $45.
An Adult Affair
Some may be familiar with the classic décor and uniformed waitresses at Lawry’s that add to the nostalgic ambience of the restaurant. Lawry’s is best known for its prime rib, beef steak, and oldtime décor. Now, Lawry’s adds another feather to its cap with the Royal Tea menu, a set for two at $48++ from Monday to Saturday, from 2.30pm to 5pm.

Chef Kerene Cheng has worked at a fivestar hotel and with renowned restaurants
Orchard
Road,
Despite having been to the other restaurants in Shangri-La hotel several times, I had never been to Shang Palace. I finally had the opportunity a few weeks ago, as it has appointed a new dim sum chef in the kitchen. Chef Kerene Cheng has been perfecting her skill for 15 years. She had worked at a five-star hotel and with renowned restaurant groups prior to joining the Shangri-La family. Her skill certainly shines through in her delicate and well-crafted dim sums.
Steamed Gems Dim sum standards are elevated at Chef Cheng’s hands, and it’s evident in the Siew Mai ($7). The steamed pork dumpling is filled with prawn, mushroom, and topped with fish roe. The dumpling is springy and flavourful without the overpowering smell of pork. The Steamed Teochew Dumplings ($6.50) are a decadent treat with baby abalone, pork, dried shrimp and chives. However, my favourite was Shang Palace’s take on the prawn roll. The Crisp Fried Fresh Prawn Roll ($6) is filled with prawn and lychee mayonnaise sauce. It oozes with sweetness and fragrance at first bite! The filling of the Steamed Salted Egg Yolk Custard Buns ($6), better known as “liu sha bao”, is extremely watery. It is probably one of the most fluid custard buns I’ve ever had. Thankfully, there is no gross oil and custard separation in the filling.
Refined Yum Cha Exemplary items such as Duck’s Tongue in Soya Sauce ($12) and Fried Turnip Cake in XO Sauce ($8) are also available on the menu. Nonetheless, I would recommend the Steamed Turnip Cake ($5.50) with conpoy, Chinese sausage and dried shrimp. The steamed turnip cake is soft and mushy while the Chinese sausage brings out a wonderful sweetness to the dish. I would suggest the light Almond Cream ($14) for dessert. It has a strong almond taste, but it is not too cloying. Most of these dishes are familiar to the Chinese but the preparation is what transforms the common into the phenomenal. Right behind the dining area is a tumble of storage boxes that provides a place to hide knick-knacks but also serves as an accent piece
Rustic endeavours We resume our popular Home Inspirations segment with more creative ideas for the home from Lookbox Living A home with a unique character is hard to come by in this day and age of off-the-shelf designs. That said, this flat by De Style Interior is brimming with individuality – a home that is a unique mix of rusticity and industrialism.
Cosy Up The living room is the sum of its parts, many of which come in the form of bold textures. The feature wall behind the TV console is sheathed with a laminate that bears the appearance of grey, petrified wood. Raw timber and white bricks also add to the rustic vibe of the space. Overhead, faux timber rafters lower the perceived height of the ceiling for a more intimate feel.
Give and Take The compact size of the flat did not stop the designers from taking risks. Right behind the dining area is a tumble of storage boxes that provides a place to hide knick-knacks but also serves as an accent piece in the home. The dining area, in contrast, is kept simple. To compensate for the narrow dining area, a window that looks into the kitchen was created. The window also extends the cooking area beyond the confines of its four walls.
Pare It Down Things make a change for the more subdued in the master bedroom. Here, wallpaper that looks like off-form concrete blocks encloses the room. Its dove-grey colour sets the tone for a restful evening. Underfoot, timber flooring serves as a warm counterpoint to the wallpaper.

Hidden underground, Coober Pedy is an otherworldly town that you must visit Can you imagine an entire town that functions underground to escape the desert heat? It seems like a location right out of science-fiction, doesn’t it? Not surprisingly, Coober Pedy in South Australia has been used as the setting for various sci-fi films. It is definitely a destination on my travel bucket list.
Cool Underground Summer temperatures in Coober Pedy often climb to an unbearable 40 degrees Celsius. How do residents of the town survive the scorching daytime heat? You may not believe it but they have built their homes in caves burrowed right into the hillsides. These innovative underground dwellings are called “dugouts” by the locals.
Visit the
world’s only

town
Exceptional ideas to experience in your lifetime
Coober Pedy is also the opal capital of the world
Why Waste a Good Hole? Coober Pedy is also known as the opal capital of the world as 95 per cent of the world’s opal comes from the mines there. I bet you didn’t know that. The denizens responsible for the first dugouts were the early opal miners. They must have thought, “Why waste a good hole?” During the mining process, the caves got huge enough to live in and the miners shifted in to escape the heat above ground.
Bucket List
Where’s the grass on the golf course?
The Serbian Orthodox Church, shops, dugouts (dwellings) and even hotels are underground
Thriving Where the Sun Doesn’t Shine An architectural marvel, Coober Pedy is the world’s only underground town. Its cavernous spaces include three-bedroom residences, banks, bars, hotels and even churches. Virtually all amenities are beneath the desert. You’d imagine that the underground living conditions would be dank and dark but residents there have found ways to make their caves appear more like cosy homes, complete with living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. A clear coating is used to seal the sandstone walls to prevent the interiors from getting dusty. These underground dwellings maintain a constant temperature and are always cool. No air-conditioning or heating system is required. Vertical shafts protrude from the
hillsides to provide sufficient ventilation. Coober Pedy’s water supply comes from an underground source 24km north of the town, which is then treated by reverse osmosis. Hence, the water quality is great and perfectly safe to drink. For entertainment, the residents play their special version of golf on the surface but only at night when it’s cooler. Their unique golf balls glow in the dark, and the golf course is completely free of grass. What a strange twist to the game of golf!
Inspiration for Reel Life Given how bizarre Coober Pedy is, as well as its scenic desert-scape, it’s no wonder that it has been used as the film set of movies such as Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome. This 1985 post-apocalyptic action movie stars Mel Gibson and Tina Turner. In it, Max Rockatansky stumbles upon Bartertown, where electricity and technology are dependent on a crude methane refinery powered by pig faeces. Another unforgettable movie that has used Coober Pedy as its backdrop is Pitch Black, starring Vin Diesel, which is set in the distant future. In this sci-fi thriller, a spaceship hits a meteor shower and crash lands on a hot and arid landscape with constant sunlight. A subsequent monthlong eclipse brings out the land’s vampirelike inhabitants. Discover this ‘alien’ landscape with an unusual town yourself. It will truly be an incomparable experience like no other.
A Taste of Life Underground Although the underground residences here are private, visitors are welcome. The opal jewellery shops are also popular among tourists. You can also experience staying a night or two in Coober Pedy’s underground hotels, that is, if claustrophobia isn’t a major issue! By Runbin Yew

here do the stars go for a summer getaway? Why, they go to Saint Tropez, France, of course. During summer, it’s common to see stars such as Rihanna, Neil Patrick Harris and Kanye West relaxing on the beach or on their huge yachts in Saint Tropez. However, apart from the busy summer season, Saint Tropez is a beautiful port town with few tourists and sandy beaches. Saint Tropez is also within driving distance to the famous cities of Cannes, Monte Carlo and Nice. When I visited Saint Tropez, it was presummer and slightly less crowded and more tranquil.
Saint Tropez: Idyllic getaway of the stars
Getting to Scenic Saint Tropez
A getaway in Saint
What was once a quaint fishing town has now become a summer vacation spot for the rich, and with it comes the exclusivity. It is not easy to get to Saint Tropez. There is a boat in summer to take you from Nice to Saint Tropez but pre-summer you have to take two buses to get there. If you fly direct from Singapore to Nice, it’s about a 16-hour flight. From the city, you’ll have to take a two-hour bus ride to Saint Raphael, and then another hour-long ride from there before you reach picturesque Saint Tropez.
Tropez, France, with the rich and famous? Yes, please!
Cote d’Azur presents clear blue waters In Saint Tropez, even the small streets and a serene view are lovely
For greater convenience, it is best if you rent a car because there is almost zero public transport in Saint Tropez.
What to See and Do in the Midst of Tranquillity If your aim is to just tan on the beach, head down to Pampelonne, where the beach stretches as far as the eye can see. The notorious Nikki Beach is usually filled with party goers and loud music during the summer. Head there if you’d like to party or to mingle but, if relaxing is your aim, you can choose to stay on the quieter Plage de Jumeaux. I did the adventurous thing by taking the Sentier Littoral – the Coastal Path. The rocky path is a little dangerous, and I would not advise anyone with a fear of heights to do it, but the path leads straight from Saint Tropez to Pampelonne and the view is amazing. It was an exceptionally clear day when I was hiking and I could see the Alps! Of course, the old town of Saint Tropez is not to be missed as the higgledy-piggledy streets have so much character. Every Saturday, a market will come to the village square, Place des Lices. There, you can find a gamut of wares from food to potpourri to summer dresses. Do check the tourism website of Saint Tropez at uk.ot-saint-tropez.com [English site] for the calendar of events.

A Tantalising Treat for the Taste Buds When in the south of France, one would be remiss to skip the seafood. There are several good seafood restaurants in Saint Tropez, depending on your budget. There are also bistros, if you prefer. Saint Tropez is largely untouched by chain stores (thank heavens) so most are momand-pop-owned cafes and bistros. Nevertheless, what’s a visit to Saint Tropez without trying the tarte tropezienne, a vanilla cream-filled brioche studded with sugar? It is usually the size of a huge cake and makes for excellent #foodporn. The best ice cream shop in town, Barbarac, is also not to be missed. It was started by an Armenian immigrant and it serves a wide range of flavours from Speculoos cookies to crème de whisky and even liquorice. Experience the tranquillity and the clear skies of Saint Tropez in the summer when the air is fresh – it’s certainly a lovely break from the city.
