Yak & Crow

Open your eyes and don’t put your foot in your mouth

We solemnly swear to yak about local hot-topic issues or crow about our opinions on Singaporean culture

signs displayed in public lifts warning people not to urinate there. Now, if Singaporeans of that era weren’t guilty of committing such acts, those signs wouldn’t have been necessary in the first place. Have we forgotten that we only recently became the first-world, clean and green city of today?

Herd Instinct of bullies

Jump to conclusions & you may shame yourself Despite the fact that the woman involved is actually a Singaporean, the online witch-hunt didn’t wane. Remember the woman defecating at the MRT station? What have we learnt from that episode? The recent incident involving a woman defecating in public sparked controversy and taught us a lesson about jumping to conclusions.

Over-Reactive Netizens You’re probably aware that in mid-August, a middle-aged woman was photographed squatting with her pants down and defecating in full view of the public. She wiped herself and left the scene before anyone could stop or identify her. This shocking incident took place at Holland Village MRT, despite the fact

that one never has to walk far to get to a restroom in Singapore. The photo of the adult person relieving herself publicly went viral on multiple social media platforms, sparking a flurry of negative sentiments and suspicions that the woman was a non-Singaporean. Netizens launched a modern witch-hunt, lambasting her lack of civic consciousness and even dissed PRCs [People’s Republic of China nationals] in general for being an “uncivilised” bunch who shouldn’t have invaded Singapore.

Are We a Nation of WitchHunters? As it turned out, the National Environment Agency (NEA) later identified the woman as a 34-year-old Singaporean female with a long history of schizophrenia and intellectual disability. So she wasn’t a PRC after all! Those ignorant naysayers have made a fool of themselves. Jump to conclusions and you may shame yourself. Despite the fact that the woman involved is actually a Singaporean, the online witchhunt didn’t wane. Keyboard warriors, emboldened by a degree

of anonymity, continued to rage against the PRCs. These netizens seized the opportunity to blame foreigners for everything, from our overcrowded trains to talking too loudly on their mobile phones to competing for jobs and university spots here.

Different ‘Tiers’ of Singaporeans Some commentators in the online forums were adamantly insistent that she’s not Singaporean. Common questions raised were: “What kind of Singaporean is she? Did she just get her IC in the last few years?” Joanna Chia lashed out on local blog theonlinecitizen.com: “With the current sentiment about foreign trash, can the authorities afford to let it be known it was a foreign trash that crapped in public and put the spotlight on its immigration policy that has obviously gone wrong?” So what if the woman was indeed a PRC or a relatively new Singapore citizen? At this point, may I remind everyone that many of our forefathers came from China too? Before the influx of recent PRC immigrants, as early as 1992, there were

A straw poll among my peers revealed that the majority of them admitted to being “privately xenophobic”, and that they are particularly against the mainland Chinese (PRCs). How did this resentment against immigrants start? CW said, “My sense is, there is a very small minority of people who are especially virulent in attacking foreigners online. They are so sucked into their own narrative of foreigners being the root of social problems that they work themselves into a frenzy trying to put foreigners down.” He added, “This minority look to the loudest critic of foreigners as their hero, as the leader of the pack. Trapped in their own echo chamber, they derive a sense of ingroup solidarity and belonging by hurling greater and greater abuse at foreigners.” Sandy, an American working here, observes with a dose of sarcasm: “Nationality bashing gives those who jump to judgement a certain warm fuzzy feeling of superiority.” There is the perception that Singaporeans or Singapore expats are somehow more sophisticated and civilised.

Let’s Be a Little Nicer to One Another Personally, I’m appalled that we have to put others down (especially when they’re not even the culprits) just to feel a little better about ourselves. I believe what we can do is to actively avoid fanning the flames of cyber-bullying. It’s cruel, unfair and short-sighted of us to jump to conclusions and play the blame game without sorting out the facts. What has years of promoting multi-racial, multiethnic tolerance in our education system led to? By Runbin Yew What are your views on this? We’re dying to hear from you. RED CARD FOOTBALL FEVER

Juicy reviews & tips on the EPL & the best of world football

Battle of the Blues The stage is set for Match Day Five as favourites Manchester City and Chelsea headline the football action in this weekend’s epic clash of the giants Blue is the colour of the week as last season’s champions Manchester City and this year’s frontrunners Chelsea get ready to battle it out in a scrumptious-looking tie. Here’s what you can look forward to this weekend.

Manchester City vs Chelsea

Will Cesc Fabregas be the difference for Chelsea?

About Ahmad Khan Ahmad Khan (@AhmadKhan12) is a presenter for Red Card Sports Radio. He has the potty idea that football makes the world go round and is convinced that the beautiful game forges greater bonds than the United Nations. Call 6281 1898 and join him in his rant about football every weekday from 6pm-8pm, on #RedCardDRIVETIME, and every weekend just before the EPL matches on #RedCardLIVE.

Both teams have been touted as titlechallengers, and City will have to get a result or Chelsea can potentially be eight points ahead after only five matches in. Men to watch: Manchester City – David Silva was superb against Arsenal, and he will be key in unlocking Chelsea’s defence. Chelsea – Diego Costa became the first player to score seven goals in four games. No surprise if he adds to that record. Prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Chelsea

Aston Villa vs Arsenal The high-flying Villans are having a sensational start to the season after three wins and a draw, and Arsenal will have to be at their very best if they want to stop that run.

Men to watch: Aston Villa – Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the winner against Liverpool, and will be a huge threat with his pace and power. Arsenal – Alexis Sanchez scored a brilliant goal against Manchester City, and his all-rounded displays so far have not gone unnoticed. Prediction: Aston Villa 1-2 Arsenal

Leicester City vs Manchester United Manchester United’s road to recovery continues with a match against another newly-promoted side. But Leicester City will prove a much tougher test than QPR, so hold your horses, United fans! Men to watch: Leicester City – Leonardo Ulloa is an absolute beast of a striker who will be the main source of goals for the Foxes this season, having already scored three. Manchester United – Angel di Maria has gotten the United faithful purring after a string of exciting displays for his new side. Opponents beware. Prediction: Leicester 1-2 Manchester United By Ahmad Khan Tune in to Red Card Sports on StarHub TV Ch 225 or download the “StarHub TV Anywhere” app.

Power 98 Sports

The big fight – UFC 178: Johnson vs Cariaso Fans of mixed martial arts (MMA) or UFC, don’t miss the big fight UFC 178: Johnson vs Cariaso. Who? I wouldn’t blame you for thinking that, considering just a few months ago, this event was supposed to have been headlined by Light Heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones and the man who many say was the closest to ever beat him, Alexander Gustafsson. As fate would have it, Gustafsson had to pull out due to injury, so they had former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier step in as a replacement, but Jones got injured! As a result, the spotlight now falls on a Flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso. This card is nonetheless a fascinating one. Here’s why.

Cat Zingano vs Amanda Nunes (Main Card) Cat Zingano’s TKO victory over Miesha Tate in April 2013 was supposed to have been her stepping stone to a title shot against Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey but a knee injury put a stop to all that. Now she’s back and needs to reestablish her position. Meanwhile, for Nunes (who’s No. 8 in the official UFC Women’s Bantamweight rankings), it’s the perfect opportunity for her to “cut in line” with a big win here. There’s a lot to be proven, so this should be an exciting fight.

Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor (Main Card) McGregor came into the UFC with a lot of hype and so far he’s delivered, riding on an 11-fight winning streak – most by knockout. Meanwhile, six of Poirier’s 16 career wins have come by submission, while McGregor’s losses have all come by submission as well, so Poirier needs to take this fight to the ground where he might have the edge.

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone vs Eddie “The Silent Assassin” Alvarez (Co-Main Event) This bout may be the co-main event but it’s undoubtedly got the most attention. We’re talking “Fight of the Year” stuff, as the former Bellator champion Alvarez finally makes his way to the UFC. Cerrone, when he’s “on”, is one of the most terrifying fighters in the world. (His last four fights all won him some kind of bonus – Performance/KO/Submission of the night.)

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson vs Chris “Kamikaze” Cariaso (Main Event) “Mighty Mouse” Johnson is the favourite, defending his title. He hasn’t lost since he became the first UFC Flyweight Champion. Cariaso, who has won his last three fights in a row, is a solid Muay Thai fighter who will look to brutalise Johnson with leg kicks

to the body. His best bet is to keep the fight standing, and stuff Johnson’s takedowns. For me, the main event has got to be Conor McGregor. He knows how to hype a fight, talks a lot of trash, and so far has always backed it up. Either way, it’ll be a fun card, and you know what I’ll be doing come Sunday morning. By Mister Young UFC 178: Johnson vs Cariaso will air on 28 Sep, from 8am (main card at 10am), on Fox Sports, Singtel mio TV Ch 114.

This cobbler is Yamaguchi Taro – he’s been mending shoes in Yishun for 21 years

The Voice Season 7: Star-studded search begins again

cialised shops, he takes it in his stride. “For the same job, I charge $10 but they can charge some $40. Sometimes, it’s even more expensive than the cost of the shoes. The customers will come to me eventually,” he says.

How He Got There

And he says he will still be there for a long time to come It’s a Monday evening and the crowd at Yishun Bus Interchange is starting to swell. As usual. Lines begin to snake, buses roar and commuters are either eager to go home or transfixed on their mobile phones, paying short shrift to Yamaguchi Taro. But when they require his services, they can locate him better than a GPS. The 65-year-old is a permanent fixture in Yishun; he has been mending shoes by the bus interchange for 21 years. Continuously. He works daily from 1.30pm to 11.30pm and his only break comes during the Chinese New Year, when he takes two weeks off from the long hours expected of the job and the exhaust fumes of buses.

Not that He’s Complaining He tells Mothership in Mandarin, “I’m used to working for long hours. People from my generation are used to being tired. We’ve been tired forever. It’s not good to rest you know – that means I have no job!” Despite the Japanese name (he has a Japanese dad), the sexagenarian is also fluent in Malay and English, switching effortlessly to converse with his many customers. Yamaguchi is one of the few street cobblers left in Singapore. Once a common sight, they are now a rare breed whose market share has been slowly eroded by chain shops, such as Shukey, which repair shoes. He estimates that there are fewer than 300 street cobblers in Singapore and said that the authorities have stopped handing out licenses to street cobblers. Eventually, he laments, there will be none left. Whatever competition from commer-

By Tan Xing Qi

The 65-year-old’s rates for shoe repair vary from as low as $2 to $450, which is the cost for stitching leather soles onto a pair of Louis Vuitton heels. On average, he mends 20 shoes daily. For someone to entrust him with a pair of heels costing at least a thousand dollars, his workmanship is obviously of a certain quality. How Yamaguchi honed his skills is as surprising as where he did it. His first job was an apprentice in a shoe-making factory and he spent his formative years there. He was only 12 years old. He left when he was 18 and went on to become a carpenter, carving decorations for Chinese Garden. He became an electrician next, and finally, a cobbler at Cobbler Square in Chinatown. “There were some 17 cobblers there and it was hard for me. Plus, I wanted to be independent. That’s why I landed up in Yishun after two years there,” he says. It wasn’t easy for him from the start. He used to stay in Queenstown and easily spent three hours traveling to and fro on his motorcycle. Now, the three hours are shortened to just three bus stops: He has adapted to the town and has been living in Yishun for three years.

He Will Never Leave Although street cobblers are in short supply, he’s happy that both his daughters, aged 39 and 35, are learning the trade from him and are now helping out at the stall on a part-time basis. They have a plan to strike out on their own and to open a shop at a HDB block. But Yamaguchi will not leave his beloved stall that he built with his bare hands. Yes, he literally constructed his own shelves and drawers. He says, “I will still carry on here even though they have their own shop.” The attachment to Yishun is unmistakable. After all, he has spent some 21 years there. From just an MRT station terminal to a bustling northern town with an expanded Northpoint Shopping Centre, he has seen it all. Yet, he looks forward to his daily date with the snaking queues, roaring buses and his beloved stall.

Face-off: Eric (Guy Pearce) scuffles with the naïve crook Rey (Robert Pattinson), foreshadowing his confrontation with emotion and empathy

movie preview David Michôd scares us into believing why zombies and giant menacing machines aren’t our biggest worries in the apocalypse

R

obert Pattinson has a way of surprising. While the world was still reeling from the effects of Twilight, this English actor turned around and bit the franchise in the neck with scathing criticism. Now, he sheds his clean-cut Cullen image for untidy stubble and a loose, blood-soaked tee. Yeah, we never thought we would see him sparkle as any other character either – but his performance in David Michôd’s latest feature shows otherwise. It’s the dusty outback of Australia, ten years into the End of the Western Economic World As We Know It. There is no law, no society, and no government; just dust and desperate people with nothing to lose. Eric (Guy Pearce) is a man who has lost everything except his car – until it gets stolen. Manically pursuing the rotten burglars, Eric is forced into a tense partnership with one of them, the injured Rey (Robert Pattinson), left for dead by his band of thieves.

THE OTHER APOCALYPSE The End of the World doesn’t always roll in with big evil bots or zombie hordes. It’s a classic Western set in the apocalypse, but not in the zombies-versus-cowboys fashion you might expect. The Rover depicts the more likely – and more fearsome – collapse of humanity as exactly that: the collapse of humanity. In this post-economic wasteland where object value and human values are stripped to the bone, empathy and sympathy are dead languages of a lost civilisation. And unlike the commonly-depicted apocalypse as devoid of human life, The Rover is swarming with it. In a parody of globalisation, people of all races flock to Aussie shores, hungry and greedy for resources and ready to blaze a trail for it – literally.

LAST MEN STANDING The characters Eric and Rey are perfectly-delivered victims of this circumstance. Eric is a veteran to pain, having lost his family and most sentimental possessions. Gunshots, explosions, vehicles tumbling in the dirt – these are nothing more than a dull daily hum to Eric.

Raving about The Rover THE ROVER [NC 16] DIRECTOR: David Michôd STARRING: Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy & David Field GENRE: Drama RUN LENGTH: 103 min RELEASE: 18 Sep

What will a man do when you take away the last thing he has?

The not-so-Grand Theft Auto, however, rips open old and new wounds that require more than bandages to heal. Enter Rey, a naïve American youth born and bred in the apocalypse, to whom violence is routine. Now, he is thrown into new turmoil, coerced into being a bargaining chip against his own family and friends. Needless to say, our anti-hero Eric develops an emotional attachment to Rey, and begins to recover some semblance of sympathy. And as long as there is hope in humanity, humanity has hope. Right?

HOW DEEP IS THE LOVE? But questions arise as tensions between the characters hit mercurial levels. Eric patches up the bruised Rey, but is it lined with sympathy or self-serving vengeance? Undoubtedly, most of Eric’s loyalty lies with his true beloved, his car. He does develop a heartfelt connection with Rey eventually, which comforts us to know that there is still humanity despite its collapse. Then there is this whole issue with the car. This could be read in many conflicting ways – is it heart-warming that Eric is committed to chasing down and gripping onto every last thread of the past? Or is it problematic that what Eric ultimately obsesses over is the object, and not so much what it represents? If it makes a difference to the dilemma, here’s a very helpful quote from Rey: “Not everything has to be about something.” We’ll leave the final judgement to you folks.

A Walk Among the Tombstones: Another Taken? Where Taken gives its protagonist figures of authority to fall on, Tombstones sends in an ex-colleague and a homeless teen artist. Like we said, more turns than a cyclone.

Looks like Liam Neeson must tread lightly among the tombstones of his previous big bad characters We know what everyone’s thinking: Oh, another prequel/ sequel to Taken? This time, Liam Neeson plays Matt Scudder, a disgraced NYPD cop now struggling as an unlicensed private detective. During one assignment, Scudder makes a shocking discovery that pits him against time and questions of morality. So, it’s not exactly a rehash of Taken. We’re going to give this one a chance. Get ready for a heart-stopping intense action sequence with more turns than a cyclone.

A Book by Any Other Name… Backed by Lawrence Block’s bestselling novel of the same name, A Walk Among the Tombstones has quite the legacy to live up to. But with the well-aged Neeson playing the hardened hero, we’re willing to bet this movie adaptation would be just as sweet. Like the book, the film follows sobered-up alcoholic Scudder chasing a couple of crooks who violently murdered his client’s wife. Of course it’s not that simple, or we’d all be done in an hour. (15 minutes, since it’s the great Liam Neeson.) Scudder uncovers a disturbing trail that opens up a grisly can of wormy serial killers, gets embroiled in the mess, and risks turning into quite the monster himself.

The brood: That intense, brooding look has been a Liam Neeson staple since successful action thriller Taken. He should patent that!

Shady Dealings and Odd Couplings Unlike most of his previous films, Neeson now plays a character completely divided by right and wrong. From doing business with drug-pushing moguls to taking the law into his own hands, Scudder appears morally ambiguous, and the film isn’t in a hurry to help us resolve that issue. Even more unexpected is Scudder’s backup. Where Taken gives its protagonist figures of authority to fall on, Tombstones sends in an ex-colleague and a homeless teen artist. Like we said, more turns than a cyclone.

No divide: The hard-hitting PI seeks counsel from a broke teen artist

Taking Away the Taken But you’re undoubtedly going to keep thinking of Taken anyway, so let’s highlight some unique elements in Tombstones that you should keep your eyes peeled for. For one, it seems like the vigilantism this time isn’t driven by love or revenge but actual justice. That said, “It’s not superhero time” is Neeson’s choice catchphrase in the film – to him, Scudder represents real people crippled by real problems. The strange combination and play between Neeson and his new ‘A-Team’ here also gets us more intrigued. Bet you’re itching to see how they’re going to pull it off, with or without a hitch, this time.

And his winning old-school mullet-and-beard combo? You’ve got to give Tombstones five stars for that. A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES [NC 16] DIRECTOR: Scott Frank STARRING: Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, Boyd Holbrook & Ruth Wilson GENRE: Action, Crime, Drama RUN LENGTH: 114 min RELEASE: 18 Sep

Foodmania Chef Simone Depalmas brings his Sardinian heritage to Alkaff Mansion’s cuisine

n e w MENU

New Sardinian at restored Alkaff Mansion

Fresh Mint Panna Cotta is a dessert with zing

The Oven-Baked Lamb Rack will make you drool

The Oven-Baked Sea Bass in Salt comes with an interesting presentation and is highly-recommended

The majestic house on the hill, Alkaff Mansion, has been restored to its former glory and the restaurant launches a fresh new Italian menu

O

nce upon a time, Alkaff Mansion used to be the “It” place for parties, where the socialites would get all dressed up and mingle. Originally built in 1918, Alkaff Mansion was owned by an illustrious Yemeni family of spice traders. Now, the kitchen in the mansion is helmed by Sardinian chef Simone Depalmas and the menu accordingly reflects his heritage.

From Sardinia with Love My favourite antipasto was the Fresh Octopus Carpaccio ($24). It comprises slivers of steamed Sardinian octopus atop frisee salad, San Marzano cherry tomatoes and orange wedges with aged balsamic reduction dressing.

The octopus was tender, not hard and chewy like I expected it to be. Thus, it was a pleasant surprise. Typical of Italian menus, the primo, or starter plates, are the carb-heavy ones. For that, I suggest the Sardinian Pasta with Assorted Seafood ($28). It is a fregola, which is something like a Sardinian couscous. The little balls of fregola have a nutty scent from the toasting, which helps to bring out the flavour in the tomatobased sauce. Also try the Homemade Squid Ink Tagliatelle ($32). The chef makes the pasta himself!

($48-$64). It is served tableside with much fanfare. The salt crust is set on fire before it is cracked open and deboned. The resulting fish is drizzled with olive oil, black pepper, tomatoes and a squeeze of lemon. The desserts are not to be missed as well. I loved the Fresh Mint Vanilla Panna Cotta ($14). It’s a twist on the traditional vanilla panna cotta with a touch of mint and berry sauce for a tartness that cuts through the cream. Perhaps it’s time to revisit the house on the hill?

Four Pillars Gin arrives in Singapore

Australian small-batch gin distillery Four Pillars debuts in select bars in Singapore Who would have thought that a distillery producing award-winning gin would have its humble beginning from a crowd-funding website? Four Pillars is the brainchild of Stuart Gregor, Cameron Mackenzie and Matt Jones from Yarra Valley, Australia. They ran a month-long Pozible crowd-funding effort and, within four days, the target of $10,000 was surpassed with 228 supporters pledging just over $30,000. They snapped up all 420 bottles of the first batch.

Aussie Ingredients in Gin The Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin features ten botanicals: juniper berries, coriander seeds, cardamom pods, lemon myrtle, Tasmanian pepper berry leaf, cinnamon, lavender, angelica, star anise and fresh oranges. The result is a potent and fragrant gin that is perfect for a Negroni cocktail. So far, bars such as Tippling Club and Moosehead have begun to carry Four Pillars Gin. Visit www.fourpillarsgin.com.au for more.

Chef Lawrence Chia honed his skills in Japan for many years

Omakase specialties at Shinzo Intricate Japanese treats are available at Shinzo The Japanese omakase-style meal seems to be gaining a strong foothold in Singapore, with more restaurants offering the meal on its menus. Omakase loosely translates to “I leave it to you”, which means you leave your meal choices entirely up to the chef. Shinzo on Carpenter Street is almost a year old and it serves omakase meals almost exclusively under the eye of Chef Lawrence Chia, who honed his skills in Japan for many years.

Convivial Dining The only seating available at Shinzo are bar seats in front of the open kitchen. The chefs often join in your conversations here and there, encouraging interaction between diners and the staff. It also helps that you see how the food is made. When I was there, my Spring Omakase Meal ($88) began with a small Snow Crab Salad with shiso leaves and citrus. However, I preferred the Sashimi Horse Mackerel with onion celery sauce more. The fresh taste of the sashimi makes this dish a good opening starter. But the most impressive dish was the slightly bony Grilled Sweetfish with foie gras stuffed inside. You

may not think that fish and foie gras go together, but they do! The creaminess of the foie gras complemented the meaty fish quite well. There are quite a few small bones in this fish, though.

Seasonal Delights One of the seasonal items available was the Fried Japanese brinjal in sesame paste. The short and slightly stubby Japanese brinjal was sliced in a crisscross fashion before being deep fried and slathered in sesame paste. This was my favourite because the fragrant sesame paste on the slightly mushy fried brinjal tasted phenomenal. The meal ended with a decadent plate of fine sushi. The meal comprised different sushi such as otoro (tuna belly), amberjack, flying fish, sea eel, and sea urchin. The chef advised us to start with the otoro first as its flavours are the most delicate. Dessert was simply two Kyoho grapes and yuzu sorbet. A great end to the meal indeed! Note that menu items may vary. Shinzo, 17 Carpenter Street, #01-01, Singapore 059906, Tel: 6438 2921 By Cheryl Chia

Tony’s Pizza updates its menu with a selection of pastas as it prepares to open a new outlet in Bugis

New Champs on the Block So far, Tony’s has introduced only two pastas to its menu as it gauges customer response. Personally, I think they should definitely include more pastas in the menu because I’ve tried both of them and they are delicious! The Signature Creamy Pesto Chicken & Mushroom Pasta ($11.90) is now one of my favourite creamy pasta dishes, and that’s saying a lot considering that I seldom like cream pastas. The pesto adds a certain fragrance to the cream sauce, cutting through the richness yet taking away none of the luxurious texture. Tony’s Special Meatballs Pasta ($11.90) is also probably one of the better meatball pastas I’ve tasted

Escape from the city and tuck into a delectable, hearty brunch at Hotel Re! Ever felt like you’re not ready for the boisterous crowds at usual brunch fixtures in the morning? Located at Pearl’s Hill, Re!fill Restaurant at Hotel Re! is the perfect place for a quiet date or even alone time. Decked mainly in pink and white, the restaurant gives off a chic and funky vibe. Re!fill has recently introduced a new brunch menu that packs a punch.

Common yet Terrific Breakfast Items

Tony’s Pizza now also has pasta Tony’s Pizza on River Valley Road is known for its New York style pizzas with thin crust, aged cheese and homemade tomato sauce. Nearly a year after opening, Tony’s Pizza expands its menu to include a selection of yummy pastas. Tony’s Pizza works closely with Tony Varvara, owner of Elegante Pizzeria in Brooklyn, New York, in the USA. The chef of Tony’s Pizza has also trained under Tony in New York to bring the most authentic New York pizzas to Singapore.

The juicy Cherie’s Slipper Lobster Croissant is drizzled with refreshing sauce

The Signature Creamy Pesto Chicken & Mushroom Pasta is new and yummy

in Singapore. The meatballs are hand-rolled with minced beef and studded with fennel seeds for extra fragrance. What blew me away was the sauce. The tomatoes used in the sauce are the big juicy ones found in more temperate climates, not the more plain or rawtasting local tomatoes.

New Outlet in Bugis Other than the pizzas and pastas, Tony’s starters and side dishes are not to be missed as well. I really liked the Buffalo Wings ($5.90-$20). I would recommend the “hot” level of spiciness for most locals as that would be about the amount of spice that we would be accustomed too. If you’re a chilli fiend, you can go straight for the “atomic” level but at your own risk. Tony’s Pizza will be opening its second outlet in Bugis Junction on Oct 1 with its usual pizza menu as well as a range of pastas available. Tony’s Pizza, 397 River Valley Road, Singapore 248292

On paper, the new breakfast items do not seem very novel. What sets them apart is certainly the quality and the portions. Eileen’s Salmon Bagel ($16) had me mopping my plate clean. I’m a true fan of salmon, and I was impressed by the amazing texture and the delicate, well-balanced smokiness. The tasty bagel was also lightly toasted to a good chew. The homemade zesty lemon cream spread scored bonus points as it perked up the flavour of the dish. Take a bite into the juicy Cherie’s Slipper Lobster Croissant ($18). It was drizzled with refreshing sauce and tobiko in a Japanese dressing. I enjoyed the fresh lobster and the golden croissant. However, I would’ve preferred it if the croissant has a better crisp consistency. Daphne’s Egg-citing Benedict ($16) may look ordinary to the eye but once in your mouth, this terrific dish will win over your heart.

Sweet and Light If you’re in the mood for something lighter, try Shermaine’s Bere!licious Pancake ($12). It is delightfully drizzled with chocolate and strawberry sauce and topped with mixed berries. I took a few bites and, before I knew it, one whole pancake had disappeared. Fear not, there’re three. If you prefer, you can choose maple syrup or butter spread instead.

Hotel Treatment at Welcoming Prices If you need another reason to make a trip down, Re!fill restaurant is having a 20 per cent discount for all five brunch items on the new menu for the month of September. Apart from feel-good dishes, the impeccable service also makes patrons feel well taken care of. First integrated mobile property market for consumers Singapore Real Estate Exchange (SRX), the property market information and property listing platform, has launched a new and handy app

5 4 3

The Singapore Real Estate Exchange (SRX) has launched the SRX Home Search App, the world’s first integrated mobile property marketplace for consumers. The App is iOS and Android compatible and is available for free on Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.

1. Unique & Useful Applications The first phase, “Share”, consists of four applications found only in SRX Home Search: Location-based Search, Shortlist, Instant Messaging of property notes and photos, and X-value. SRX Home Search is the only app that allows consumers to look for homes using a locationbased search engine. It has real-time access to SRX’s extensive database; and one can share the experience with friends and family using social networking capabilities. Shortlist allows consumers to select their preferred listings, take notes and upload photos during viewings. All this can be shared with family and friends who may not be present at the viewing. It also enables one to track conversations based on a particular listing rather than having to scroll through a long thread. Consumers will also be able to use SRX’s pricing feature, X-Value, which has become the market’s standard for establishing the price or rent of a home.

2. Secure Comms & Digital Scheduling The second phase of the SRX Home Search launch, “Agent”, this September, will introduce features to link a consumer with his or her real estate agent. The two parties will then be able to interact on a secure communication channel, and exchange sensitive information as well as digitally schedule home viewings and other events. “This is the next step in the SRX consortium’s efforts to make the buying, selling, and renting process more efficient as well as satisfying for the consumer and agent,” said Eugene Lim, ERA Key Executive Officer.

3. Connecting With All Service Professionals The third phase, Deal Team, to be launched in October, will allow consumers and agents to connect and interact with other professionals who serve real estate consumers, such as lawyers, mortgage bankers and insurers, so that the transaction can be executed efficiently.

Local nostalgia We’ve seen many homeowners embracing the nostalgic look in their homes to great effect. We reminisce the good ol’ days with these old-school goodies with a modern twist.

A blue and white colour palette for the kitchen keeps things fresh and helps the open concept get more mileage

Functional beauty We resume our popular Home Inspirations segment with more creative ideas for the home from Lookbox Living Getting a home to pander to practical living requirements while looking good is not an easy task. Paul Teo of Earth Living, for one, understands this full well, and is familiar with the implications of balancing form and function in his designs. “As an interior designer, I want to create homes that are livable but look good at the same time,” he reiterates. Here, he negotiates his client’s requests for more storage space, ease of maintenance and a neat spatial layout with flair.

One of a Kind Nyonya Kueh Sticky Notes designed by Farm, $15, from Naiise

The living room feature wall is made from wood and craftstone tiles, layered together to create a textured look. “It’s something unique and different,” says Paul about the design. “We wanted to build something that you wouldn’t normally see in a Singaporean home. It’s not a particularly difficult feature to create, but it definitely stands out and grabs your attention when you’re in the living room,” he says.

Out Of The Blue The kitchen benefits from an open concept that brings light into the home. A blue and white colour palette keeps things fresh and helps the open concept get more mileage. “It makes the space feel clean and spacious,” says Paul. “I didn’t want an all-white kitchen, or a dark kitchen, so it made sense to pair two light colours,” he says.

Essence of Fun The kid’s bedroom is a practical space for a growing child. The bed rests on a raised platform with pull-out drawers that provide ample storage. A cantilevered study desk is tucked away next to the bed, and shelves and cabinetry are built along the wall to maximise floor space. Paul shares, “We wanted to provide space for the child to store things like books and files, but also display knick-knacks and show a bit of his personality.”

Work and Play A spare room serves as a multi-functional space that the entire family can use. Paul and his team made sure that it can easily transform to meet the needs of its occupants. A built-in study table provides space for them to sit down and work, while storage cabinets allow them to hide away unsightly mess. At the same time, the room is large enough should the family need to pull out a spare mattress for guests who are staying the night.

Shower Space As in most HDB homes, the bathrooms proved to be a spatial challenge. Paul overcame the problem by merging the common bathroom with the master bathroom, both of which sit right next to each other. A light material palette keeps things easy on the senses while the extra space available makes the utilitarian space a most pleasant one to be in. By Redzman Rahmat

While your phone camera will disappoint you, the Digital Compact Camera with the 30x zoom will give you the stunning shot you yearn for.

Stunningly close: Digital Compact Camera with 30x zoom will succeed where phone cameras will fail

Steady On With Image Stabilization

PHOTO TIPS

With a zoom this powerful, you need to be steady. That’s why the hand grip is essential to give you a solid hold on the camera.

Canon PowerShot SX400 IS

BETTER HOLIDAY PHOTOS? Here’s how It’s time to ditch your mobile phone and use a Digital Compact Camera to capture your best holiday memories You’ve just spent a few thousand dollars on an exotic destination filled with interesting food, people and landscape. Of course, you’d want to capture it all in photos. But your phone camera just isn’t giving you the photo quality your holiday deserves!

Upgrade Your Travel Photos With a quality Digital Compact Camera,

you’ll capture great photos with little additional weight. Take the Canon PowerShot SX400 IS for instance. At less than $250, it is lightweight, making it easy to travel with, yet it comes complete with heavyweight features. The best part about the Canon PowerShot SX400 IS is its zoom function. It can magnify distant objects by a whopping 30x! This is equivalent to a 720mm lens on a DSLR! In real world terms, you can capture any scenery from panoramic shots to zooming into minute statues on the façade of Notre Dame. Or perhaps, you want to capture a closeup of the full moon rising over the horizon.

To reduce shaking, the Canon PowerShot SX400 IS has a built-in antishake function. The technology behind it is supremely sophisticated but, simply put, the camera has a very smart computer inside, which monitors motion, to reduce the chance of blurry photographs.

• DO zoom into the local people’s faces and catch their expressions. With Canon PowerShot SX400 IS’s ultra-zoom, you can be far away and still capture expressions. • DO use a small tripod or simply place the camera on a table or anything stable for very low light photos.

Star in Your Own Movie Photos are great but sometimes shooting videos is better. This is especially true for performances or action scenes. The Canon PowerShot SX400 IS brings all its zooming and image-stabilizing powers to your high-definition video. So before you hop on the plane, make sure you’re carrying a Digital Compact Camera to record your dream holiday!

• DO shoot HD video and narrate into the camera to make your captured holiday memories more interesting.

Salar was formed due to the transformation of several prehistoric lakes. The Salar is covered by metres of salt crust, which results in a striking flatness. When it rains, it leaves a layer of water that reflects the sky above, creating a beautiful illusion of a never-ending sky.

2. Antelope Canyon, USA The colourful layered walls of Antelope Canyon are located on native American (Navajo) land in Arizona. There are several sections of the canyon and most require a guide. In winter, the lake glows a bright blue and it is rich in freshwater fauna due to its isolation. Trendy Bangkok? Think Thong Lor! Part 1 of 2 Shareen Wong is back to share with you more travel tips, and she highlights some of the most happening places in Thong Lor, Bangkok So you’ve been to Siam Paragon, Pratunam and Chatuchak. Time to venture a little further down the BTS line to Thong Lor – home of the Japanese community, upmarket condos and tons of good street food and trendy bars! In this first of a two-part series, I’ll bring you to check out some of these hip places.

and scones are some of the best I’ve had. They have a very limited menu so this place really is perfect for breakfast or tea and especially if you’re on a girly trip. Have a wander around the garden while waiting for your tea to brew and you’ll be rewarded with a picture perfect backdrop as the owner is one of Bangkok’s top landscape architects. Agalico Agalico is straight out of an English romance novel. It’s been around for years but the all-white café is immaculately kept, complete with manicured gardens. Honest food and serious drinks await at Soul Food Mahanakorn. Located right at the tip of Sukhumvit Soi 55 (or Thong Lor itself), this place is a stroll from the BTS station. Take Exit 3 and turn right when you’re on street level. Look for the flower shops across the main road, and you’ll spot it about 5 minutes down that road. It looks like a Japanese restaurant from the outside, especially with the sliding

Look out for Part 2 next week, where Shareen will bring you to more interesting hangouts.

You’ve probably heard of the famous sky bar at the Lebua State Tower in Bangkok, which was featured in the movie Hangover 2. Well, Octave – the sky bar at the Marriott Thong Lor – offers a similarly impressive view but of a totally different part of the city. The bar on the 45th floor extends three storeys up and reminds us of 1-Altitude in Singapore. Done up to look real sexy (inspired by New York’s apartment terraces), this bar is a great place to chill out at after dinner.

Shareen Wong is a travel-holic, foodie and former radio presenter. She’s floored by the sheer number of cool restaurants and bars in Thong Lor. And they keep popping up, so there’s a never-ending list of places to check out! Shareen has caught the entrepreneurial bug and now travels the world curating pieces for her designer jewellery boutique – Embrace Jewellery. Follow her travels on Instagram: @shareenwong_
